Living off the grid in song and story J.R. Rardon Black Press PORT McNEILL— Whether book reading fans who received a bonus concert or music fans who enjoyed an added book reading, there were smiles all around as the motherdaughter duo of Yvonne Maximchuk and Theda Phoenix wrapped up their Vancouver Island book and CD tour before more than two dozen fans at the local Anglican church. The brief tour, which began in Parksville on April 25, was a somewhat impromptu collaboration the pair arranged when Maximchuk’s first book was published within days of the release of Phoenix’s debut singersongwriter CD. “I’d been recording the CD for the last nine or 10 months,” Phoenix said, “and it happened to come out at the same time as mom’s book. We got them back three days apart and planned the tour.” The tour could be described as somewhat eclectic, with venues ranging from the Costco

Maximchuk is best known for her paintings of B.C. coastal images.

Her first book, Drawn to Sea: Paintbrush to chainsaw — carving out a life on B.C.’s rugged Raincost, is an alternately whimsical, dramatic and inspirational tale of a young family’s move in the early 1980s from White Rock to a remote floating home without running water, electricity or a store closer than two hours away by boat. 3x3.5 DR. LATHANGUE

Question: What is IV sedation?

IV sedation as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight sleep” which are both misleading - IV conscious sedation is designed to relax the patient at a light or moderate level and, in reality, you remain conscious during the procedure meaning you will understand and respond to requests from your dentist - although you may not remember because the drug typically used Dr. Kevin Lathangue does two things, 1. IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of not being bothered by what’s going on. 2. The drugs used for IV sedation produce either partial or full memory loss (amnesia) for the period of time when the drug first kicks in until it wears off. As a result, time will appear to pass quickly and you will not recall much of what happened - this is likely the reason people believe they were “asleep” during the procedure. Typically, people seek out IV sedation when they are anxious about a procedure or the needle. Although IV sedation is not a pain killer - we can use EMLA cream to prevent the needle from hurting which creates a more comfortable experience. Finally, if you are a person who has postponed your dental treatment due to fear or anxiety - this might be the perfect solution to finally get your oral health back on track. Her new CD, Legacy, is an inspirational and uplifting collection of songs featuring Phoenix’s silky, almost ethereal vocals. Backed by recorded instrumentals, she kicked off her set in Port McNeill this month with a piece called On the Water. “Many of the songs on the CD were inspired by my life growing up in Echo Bay,” she said in her introduction to the song. “This is my ode to life on the water.” Phoenix actually has recorded several previous CDs. Meant as a soothing and spiritual backdrop for meditation, yoga or general relaxation, those recordings blend her voice and ambient instrumentals with

FISHING CORNER

This year in the month of May, fishing the local lakes has been described as improving by many anglers. The public boat launches in Campbell River are quite active as the weather turned for the better and anglers were getting out. Shelter Point is an area that the boats are heading to. At Discovery Marina last week an angler coming back from Campbell River Fishing Gu ide Boats fishing hooked into a 21 pounder. The winter springs are being caught at Kitty Coleman and Bates Beach and the fish size goes anywhere from 9 to 19 pounds. Anglers have also had good catches of salmon on the south end of Denman Island and at Deep Bay. Some nice trout have been caught at Roberts Lake, trolling along the east side of the lake. This lake is hard to fish at times because of the wind and guys getting out are trolling deep to get to the big ones. If you’re fishing north of Campbell River try Stella Lake, which is located on the Elk Main logging road close to 20 kms off the main highway, this road is rough most of the time and is well used in summer. Signs are posted along the way and Stella Lake will be a good destination to try fishing in weeks to come. If you know a member of the Courtenay Fish and Game association, a great spot to get the kids fishing is the stocked pond located near the clubhouse. This pond is stocked with fish and is easy access for all to enjoy a day out fishing, the pond is also wheelchair accessible. In Campbell River the Quinsam River has been very good for trout. For fly fishing this river Catch & Release Trout is a nice spot to get out and Quinsam River fish the pools.

Water is the most abundant, yet possibly the most overlooked, substance in the human body accounting for 45 to 60 per cent of an adult’s total body weight. Water is essential for many bodily processes. It is used to provide lubrication for joints, transport nutrients to the cells, get rid of unwanted waste, and most importantly keep us cool when the temperature rises. Of course, running all of these systems takes a constant supply of water that needs to be replaced on a daily basis. For an average adult, water loss during a typical day can be up to 2.5 litres. In order to maintain the fluid balance within the body, water gain needs to equal water loss. In other words, any water lost by sweating, or urinating, needs to be

This issue is a controversial one and there is a great deal of conflicting information on it. However, if you obey your thirst and drink only when thirsty, then you will be safe and it should not affect your performance at all. It is better not to force yourself to drink too often. In most situations you can listen to your body and you should be fine. If you have trouble hearing what your body is telling you, drink somewhere between 400 to 1,000 millilitres per hour while you are exercising. Are sports drinks necessary for rehydration? Sports drinks can be helpful to athletes who are exercising at a high intensity for 60 minutes or more, but it’s really not necessary to replace losses of sodium, potassium and

lsland readers love their local newspaper 7x14 David Black believes in the power of hometown connections Teresa Bird Black Press

Are small town newspapers a good business investment? In light of today’s technology many people believe newspapers are dying, but David Black, owner of Black Press and the Midweek doesn’t agree when it comes Black Press Vancouver Island to community newsCommunity News Media papers. • North Island Midweek “I think that week• North Island Gazette ly newspapers are • Campbell River Mirror good business,” says • Comox Valley Record Black. “I don’t see • Parksville Qualicum News the internet threat• Alberni Valley News ening that.” • Nanaimo News Bulletin Black knows what • Ladysmith Chronicle he is talking about. • Lake Cowichan Gazette He got his start in • Cowichan News Leader Pictorial the newspaper busi• Peninsula News Review ness humbly enough • Saanich News when he bought • Oak Bay News the Williams Lake • Victoria News Tribune in 1975 • Goldstream News Gazette from the owners, • Sooke News Mirror one of whom was his • Monday Magazine father. • bcclassifieds.com “I never intended • UsedEverywhere.com to be a newspaperman, I studied engineering and took

my MBA,” says Black. “I ended up as a inancial analyst for the Toronto Star for a couple of years and started to like the (newspaper) business. I particularly liked the weeklies.” When his father told him that the Tribune was being sold, Black asked if he could buy it. “He just laughed and said, ‘Why do you think I told you?’” recalls Black fondly. The young Black family moved to Williams Lake “for a couple of years” but “fell in love with small town living” and stayed for a decade. While there Black learned the business at the grassroots level. “I learned a lot about the weekly newspaper business,” says Black. “When somebody left, whether it was an editor or a compositor or a sales rep or a circulation manager or … I ended up doing the job until we found a replacement. I really helped me the rest of my career because I actually know what it take to do the job.” And from Williams Lake, Black began to expand his career and business. In 1980 he purchased the Ashcroft Journal (now the Ashcroft Cache Creek Journal). Today David Black lives in Victoria and Black Press includes more than 190 publications, in B.C., the Prairies, Washington State and a daily in both Hawaii and Akron, Ohio. So why has Black Press been so successful? “I understand business, I have a head for business. But the trick is people. If you can surround yourself with people who are really good, you will succeed,” explains Black. “We have really good staff.” And that is part of the reason why community newspapers aren’t as threatened by the internet, say Black. “We are putting out as good a local paper as we can afford editorially. It shows in the numerous awards we receive every year and our readership.” says Black. “I think weeklies will continue very much the same, I don’t see huge changes in towns the size of Courtenay/
