Liberal Victory in Nechako and B.C. Sam Redding Omineca Express John Rustad of the Liberal Party of B.C. has won his seat for the Nechako Lakes district. “I’m a little tired and excited and humbled and a whole bunch of emotions all

at once,” said Rustad. Voters all over B.C. elected a Liberal majority for a fourth term with the province’s 40th Provincial Election. The Liberals managed 44.4 per cent of the vote and took 50 seats. Pre-election polls were all predicting a victory for Adrian Dix of the NDP so observers were stunned Tuesday night by the Liberal’s victory in B.C. although the NDP were not far behind with 39 per cent of the vote and 33 seats. A map of B.C. ridings will show that although the Liberals took the majority, the entire coastline of B.C. is NDP. “I thought last night was going to be a very tight race,” said Rustad. “But I was pleasantly surprised over how the results went over the course of the evening.” After winning 54 per cent of the votes, Rustad describes it as “a humbling experience” and plans to continue campaigning on behalf of the North, in particular making sure the lumber mills have lots of timber to work with. “My number one priority is the mid-term timber supply and what we need to do along that front to secure wood for our mills in Nechako lakes as well as throughout the pine beetle impacted area.” Rustad has said that Leader Christy Clark poured her heart into the campaign and conveyed her vision for B.C. to which voters responded with their votes. When asked about the recent Greyhound cuts affecting Vanderhoof, Rustad wanted to assure residents that his party has been working on it. “We were working with greyhound before the election to try to find ways to make sure that all

RCMP hold Open House during Police Week Sam Redding Omineca Express The Vanderhoof RCMP held an open house on Thursday, May 16 as part of National Police Week. The open house welcomed the public, particularly kids, to learn and familiarize themselves with police methods. The cruisers were especially popular. “A lot of kids might be afraid and this is a chance for them to have fun and get over those fears,” said Sergeant Jason Keays. “We’re here to protect you not scare people.” School-children came from all over Vanderhoof to check

out the police vehicles and the ambulance. They also got a tour through the station, and a short stop in cells. Everyone took turns playing with the siren and yelling out commands through the loudspeaker. “Come out with your hands up,” one child’s voice blasted. “And wave ‘em like you just don’t care!” Police week was to “increase community aware-

communities are still served,” he said. “Ultimately greyhound is a private enterprise and they need to make decisions but certainly I’m going to be advocating

ness and recognition of policing service” according to their website. But what it’s really about is letting the people know that the officers are part of the community and that they can go to them for help when they need to. This week honors their dedication and sacrifice, so we can live comfortably and they can be there when we need help.

Project Heavy Duty Sam Redding Omineca Express Every year about 24 students from high schools in the School District 91 area take part in Project Heavy Duty. This project allows the students to get close up and learn about all the heavy machinery that they could operate if they pursue a future in the business. This valuable exposure helps garner interest in the forestry and mining industry. The project allows the students to operate a wide range of indus-

trial machinery such as skidders, loaders, fellerbunchers, gravel trucks, excavators, back-hoes, graders, and bob-cats. The students get to try out all the equipment at the Striegler gravel pit and participate in an active workplace scenario. The students dig up the dirt, then fill the trucks, then drive the trucks around the site, then dumping the dirt and finally flattening and spreading it around. “I’ve been involved with project heavy duty for the last seven years as the district coordinator,”

said Darren Carpenter. district coordinator and Vanderhoof District Councillor. “This is our flagship project, we do seven of these throughout the year.” Project Heavy Duty has been running for 27 years thanks to its sponsors who are invaluable to the program. This is the second half of the Heavy Duty project, last month the students got to visit Endako mines and learn about the workplace there and they usually check out L&M Lumber as well. “Co-op and Endako mines donate the fuel…

so yesterday we put in 1,400 litres of fuel into the various machines,” said Carpenter. “So you put a dollar tag on all of this and there’s no way we could ever remotely do this without the sponsors. “ Each year local partners in the community, contractors and businesses are asked to donate their equipment and instructors who work the equipment donate their time to teaching the students. The students get to try out each of the equipment for about an hour, they get a safety talk and instruction from the seasoned professionals and then they get to work. “The coordinators at the school level decide what kids can come,” said Carpenter. “We can’t just bring a class group out here, we want students who have an inclination for heavy equipment. Some kids just don’t know what they want to do so this lets them come out here

and try it out.” As to which machines the kids want to try out most, “anything new and shiny is a big hit” said one instructor. “It’s great to show the next generation, it’s bet-

ter than working! Most days anyway.” As for the students, one had said that the equipment is easy to operate but hard to pull off. All the machines look easy to manage but

there’s so much technical work and skills that only come with time. The school district would like to thank their many supporters and partners for their generous donations.

Mine nears start up May 2013 -- At the recent Thompson Creek Metals annual general meeting, company president and chief operating officer, Scott Shellhaas, provided a project development update. Here are some of the highlights of his talk. To view the full presentation, please visit the news section at www. mtmilligan.com In a year that presented challenges for miners around the world, Mount Milligan remains on schedule with construction now 89 per cent complete. Start-up of the copper gold mine is planned for the third quarter of this year. Full commercial production is expected before year end. On site at Mount Milligan, the senior management team is in place and is focussed on the making a smooth transition from construction to operations. The truck shop, warehouse and administration building are

being readied for use, and all major infrastructure is nearing completion. At the open pit, eight 793 haul trucks, two 7495 shovels, and one 994 loader are readying the ore face for mining. The primary crusher is complete. Inside the processing plant, mechanical assembly of the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill and the two ball mills is complete. All plant engineering and procurement is also finished. Other recent achievements include a continued focus on safety with more than 4.8 million hours worked without a lost time incident. During the spring freshet, additional water will be collected in the tailings storage facility (TSF) bringing the total volume of water to above 12 million cubic metres. Approximately 10 million cubic metres of water are required for start-up. In the coming months the team at Mount

Milligan will be focussed on completing a number of important activities. The mining team will be building a crushed ore stockpile. Inside the plant, the mechanical team will be working to complete all piping as well as electrical cable installation. At the tailing storage facility work will continue to raise the height of the dam. Key milestones for June are finishing the mechanical work required for plant start-up and ensuring all systems are ready for commissioning. Mount Milligan is an open pit copper gold mine, scheduled to start up in the third quarter of this year. Located between Fort St James and Mackenzie, Mount Milligan will be a conventional, truck shovel, open pit mine designed to produce an average of 81 million pounds of copper and 194,500 ounces of gold annually over a projected 22-year life. Hospice volunteer training

Sam Redding Omineca Express Over 90,000 students across B.C. are participating in the Student Vote program. This program allows underage students to learn about the election process and to hopefully become engaged with the process of government. Just before election day, Chris Mushumanski’s social studies class at NVSS learned about the voting process Monday, May 13. “In Socials 11 we talk about government and elections and the process of democracy and this really makes it come alive,” said Chris. “For students to be able to see first-hand how the election works and to have choices that are real, you can’t beat that.” The goal is for students to become engaged in voting early so they will be more likely to vote as adults. Students in the Nechako Lakes riding elected John Rustad of the Liberal Party, the same as voters in the real election. Of the 499 total votes in the Nechako Lakes riding, 33 per cent of them went to Rustad and

The Board of Education of School District No. 91 (Nechako Lakes) would like to sincerely thank all Vanderhoof residents who participated in the Vanderhoof Schools Reconfiguration process. The consultation period officially ended on Friday, May 10th. In the process of reaching a decision, the Board of Education will consider all the public questions and comments that have been brought forward. This valuable information will help the Board consider all points of view as they seek to make this difficult, but important decision. Although this has been a stressful and emotional process for all involved, the Board of Education appreciates all those who have participated in the process. One very clear message that has come through is that Vanderhoof residents are justly proud of their schools. This speaks highly of the compassionate and caring staff found in our School District No. 91 (Nechako Lakes) locations. It also speaks to the value that is added to each of our schools by engaged parents. Thank you to everyone.

a surprising 25 per cent went to the Green Party’s Colin Hamm. But the NDP was the party most favoured by the Student Vote of B.C. Capturing 38 per cent of the popular vote followed by the Liberals at 28 per cent and the Green Party at 17 per cent. If the students had been the only ones allowed to vote, the province would be under different leadership. Voter participation in the classroom is just the same as in B.C. according to Chris. “You get some who are quite passionate about politics and change and some who are not quite there yet.”

100 Year 4-H anniversary donations

If you are interested in volunteering for the Hospice there is a 8 week training session, Tuesdays 7-9, starting May 28th, Stuart Nechako Manor Theatre. Please call Debbie 250-567-7956 for more information.

Honour for broadcaster Meisner Sam Redding Omineca Express Benjimin Meisner, a longtime broadcaster for Opinion 250 in Prince George, has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. This medal is awarded to individuals for their honorable service in military, police, or for an outstanding achievement or service to their community. Ben has been in the broadcasting business for nearly 60 years, penning hundreds of editorials and other opinion pieces. “This hasn’t always made him popular among the power brokers, but for Ben it’s not about popularity but doing the right thing,” said MP Dick Harris in a press release. “It is Ben’s quiet advocacy that makes him an exemplary candidate for this prestigious award.” Miesner has been involved in negotiations for the Rivers Committee and fighting for salmon in the Nechako. Meisner has fought long and hard for the rights of communities like Vanderhoof. “It’s my opinion that had there not been a big lakes formed southwest of Vanderhoof, then Vanderhoof could have been a community that would have rivaled Prince George in size.” This is because of the size of what are now underwater resources, a land tract approximately as

big as Nova Scotia according to Benjimin. “It’d be hard to put a finger on a resource they don’t have there,” he said. “But they took away those opportunities for the community of Vanderhoof to be able to develop those resources.” Benjimin Meisner believes his job is to give a voice to those people whose voice is never heard, either because they’re not a complete expert or high-price lawyers get in the way. He considers himself an extension of the ordinary, average citizen. “I think that my job was to represent those people and I still feel strongly that Vanderhoof has never really got the fair shake it deserved in this process.” Meisner also helped to create the Northern Medical Program in 2000 because of the lack of doctors and funding available, this then spawned the Northern Medical Treatment Centre. For all these reasons Benjimin Meisner has been nominated for several awards. He has won the Golden Jubilee Award and been nominated twice for the Order of Canada. But his favourite of all time was given to him by Vanderhoof. “The most cherished possession that I have is a certificate of recognition issued to me 18 February 1995 making me an honorary citizen of Van-

New Gold holds open house Sam Redding Omineca Express The open house for New Gold’s Blackwater Project was held on May 6 in Vanderhoof at the Friendship Centre, which had the highest number of people attend. There were also open houses in Fraser Lake, Burns Lake, Quesnel, Fort St. James and Prince George which totaled about 250 in attendance. “Our plan over the next year or so is to hire as many people as we can from the local region,” said Tim Bekhuys, Director of Environment and Sustainability for New Gold. “And we’d be looking to hire people as we move towards construction in early 2015.” The Blackwater Gold Project is located 110

kilometers southwest of Vanderhoof on the north side of Mt. Davidson. It’s currently in the advanced exploration phase but construction is set for 2015 with production for 2017. “The open houses were a great opportunity to meet with people and learn more about their family, business and community interests,” said Bekhuys in a press release. “They also provided us with important feedback we can use to design the project in a way that leaves lasting benefits to the region.” Opportunities like an expected hire of 1,000 to 1,500 workers during the construction and 500 workers to operate the mine. Bekhuys would also like to thank all the people who came to the open house, especially if they missed the hockey game!

Man arrested in sexual assault case Submitted Prince George RCMP arrested a 20 year old male late afternoon on Tuesday, May 7. The Provincial Crown Counsel has approved the charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault, Attempted Robbery and Sexual Assault with a Weapon against Keanen Drew Norman Duncan. The assault took place Saturday, May 4 in Lorne Park near the corner of Massey Drive and Westwood Boulevard. A woman was walking through the park when she was accosted for money, she was then beaten and sexually assaulted. A neighbor heard screaming and managed, with the help of the victim, to scare off the attacker. On the evening of Monday, May 6, police executed a search warrant at a residence on Forest Avenue where evidence was then seized. “These types of violent crimes are extremely rare in our community” said Supt. Eric Stubbs, Officer in Charge of the Prince George RCMP. “We provided a dedicated response and utilized all the resources available to us. I am very pleased that the evidence obtained and information provided

has led to approved charges.” Duncan remains in police custody until his next court date.

derhoof, I cherish that,” said Meisner. “To me that means more than any of the other accolades because this is genuine from the people in our community and that means more to me than getting an accolade from somebody of high standing in government or in Ottawa.” But according to Meisner this is not his best accomplishment. “I always say when you look in the jewel box, the best thing you’ll ever find won’t be this fame or success or anything, it’ll be your kids or your wife.” The award was presented to him on Saturday at 8:00am in the Foyer of the Coast Inn of the North in Prince George.

If this were not enticing enough, Missy is also polydactal; extra toes for an extraordinary lady. Unfortunately, Missy was outside for quite a while, and came into us severely matted. We were more concerned with removing the painful mats than maintaining her beautiful haircut, so she has some unsightly bare spots where the mats used to be. The good news is, after removing the mats, she began to trust us more and started to purr and snuggle while being pet. Missy is still a little shy and would do best in a quiet home, free of children, dogs and chaos. She needs a warm, loving lap to lay in and someone who will brush and pet her and keep her coat beautiful and mat free. Please come and meet Missy as soon as possible as she is one of a kind. Attendees will learn how to tie knots, how to cast and insect identification all from experts. The Polar Coachman Fly Fishing Club welcomes anyone who wants to gain tips from experienced anglers, regional fishing experts and meet the creator of the nationally recognized Angler’s Atlas website. The open house starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at the Spruce City Wildlife Association Clubhouse on River Road. People can also come and meet renowned author and angler Brian Smith who is signing copies of his new book “Seasons of a Fly Fisher.” This is Smith’s second book, in 2009 he published Fly Fishing BC’s Interior which was more of a guidebook unlike the new one. Both books can be found or ordered at Omineca Source for Sports.

“This second one is kind of a diary based on a year of fishing in the interior,” said Smith. “I go out to Alberta, the Kootenays, the West Coast, fishing for cutthroat, steelhead, salmon. It’s kind of an all around kind of book.” The book will include personal expe-

Things you can’t say in elections Tom Fletcher Black Press Another election campaign has come and gone, with the ritual posturing of political parties and most news media searching for anything they can portray as a conflict. Now comes the time to wonder why not enough people cared, or informed themselves about the real problems of running this $40 billion corporation called the B.C. government. Why would they, when the whole thing is presented as a combination of beauty contest and sports event, with endless discussion of polls and “attack ads” and who’s ahead and what’s the score? Again we have seen the truth of former prime minister Kim Campbell’s observation that elections are no time to talk about serious issues. Indeed, there are some things you can’t speak of at all. Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm caused a stir at a candidates’ debate when he referred to constituents’ concerns that disabled children can cause difficulties in classrooms. He didn’t say classrooms should be segregated, although that’s a discussion worth having. He didn’t deny the need for more support for special needs kids. But his opponents immediately portrayed it that way, and media seized on the conflict despite the factual inaccuracy. West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan had a similar experience when he referred to his study of poverty in that affluent area. He noted that there was a high correlation between single parenthood and kids in poverty. Picking on single mums, his detractors exclaimed, and that’s what got reported. The B.C. Conservatives kicked their Boundary-Similkameen candidate out of the party because he wrote an article saying women shouldn’t choose to be single mothers. You can talk about child poverty, as long as you only discuss it based on federal statistics that do not measure poverty. Christy Clark started doing this as soon as she became B.C. Liberal leader, one of several issues where she dispensed with the facts and tried to copy a popular NDP stance instead. She was all about families, which can of course be single people, single parents or pretty well anything you want them to be. In fact the decline of the traditional family and the abdication of responsibility by many parents, fathers in particular, are central factors in the problem of poor and neglected children. But you can’t talk about that, at least not during elections. Whole areas of political discussion have devolved into euphemisms that are chosen because they can’t be defined. favour of “affordable housing,” for instance. What they won’t admit is that this is code for subsidized housing, because then they would have to talk about how much the subsidy is, and who has to pay for it. Good grief, that might raise the question of whether the state should be taking money away from some people and giving it to others so they can live where they otherwise couldn’t afford to live. We even have rules preventing the media from reporting polls on election day. People might be influenced by this, you see. If you tell them Party X is far

ahead, they might stay home and mow the lawn instead. If you tell them someone is making a comeback, they might change their vote because they want to be on the winning side, or the one that has “momentum.” Just like any other sport. The news media are steadily losing influence with the public. There are many factors involved, including the vast array of information sources that are available at most people’s fingertips. Another factor is treating the public like they’re idiots.

Second-Year UBC medical students increase healthcare access Hope Air receives donation of $9,293 to provide 40 flights to get low-income families to healthcare

Getting to the medical care you need shouldn’t require days off work, high travel costs, or large amounts of stress,” says second-year medical student Sherry Hu. Sherry is also the president of the Class of 2015 of University of British Columbia medical school. Her class raised $9,292.92 in support of rural medicine and, for the first time ever, decided to donate the entire proceeds to a single charity – and that charity is Hope Air! Hope Air is a nation-wide charity that arranges free flights to get low-income Canadians to specialized healthcare that does not exist in their local community. Hope Air serves people of all ages, with all illnesses, from all across Canada. Last year, Hope Air provided 6,091 free flights across Canada, with 70 per cent of the flights occurring in BC. Thomas Luo, one of the two students who, separately but simultaneously, recommended Hope Air for the donation, says “I nominated Hope Air because our expansive geography and low population density outside of the Lower Mainland is a common problem for all public services to communities across Canada. For healthcare, there is no practical way to bring many specialized services to all the residents in smaller communities. Timely and affordable travel is a prerequisite for those people to access proper care.” The medical students have donated $9,292.92 to provide free flights in British Columbia. The donation translates to almost 40 flights for individuals who must travel to healthcare. “The more we learned about Hope Air and the services it provides to get people to the care they need, the more we wanted to support their work,” says Sherry Hu. Leslie Louie, Donor Relations Officer with Hope Air, accepted the gift from the students at a special presenta-

tion in early in May. At the cheque presentation, Leslie thanked the students and told them, “Living in the Metro Vancouver Area, it is easy to take for granted our access to world-class healthcare. Yet for many families in northern and interior BC areas, accessing such care is a huge challenge. Cost and distance are formidable barriers and add enormous financial, physical and emotional stress to individuals already dealing with serious health issues. Your support has guaranteed access to healthcare for many living throughout BC.” Each year, the first and second year students raise money for rural medicine. This year the Class of 2015 voted to determine Hope Air as their “charity of choice”. The proceeds were raised through social activities and fundraising endeavours. The funds are typically divided amongst the entire class and distributed to support rural medicine. However, this year medical student Thomas Luo both proposed that they pool their resources and make a greater impact. Vivian Leung and Thomas Luo, after a little internet research, both independently proposed that the combined donation go to Hope Air, and their fellow students were overwhelmingly supportive of doing this. Both Hope Air and the Class of 2015 hope that future classes will consider this type of donation, yet everyone is very pleased at the increased profile Hope Air now has with the future physicians of British Columbia. “Many will do residencies throughout the province and some will end up serving these communities,” says Leslie Louie. “Having a knowledge of the kind of flights services Hope Air provides can help them get their future patients to the medical care they need.” You too can help Hope Air to provide flights: visit www.hopeair.ca or

call 1-877-346-4673. Hope Air was founded in 1986 to get financially-disadvantaged Canadians to specialized medical care that is only available in larger urban centres. Since then, Hope Air has expanded to arrange free flights for all ages, with all illnesses, from all across Canada. In 2012, Hope Air provided the most flights ever in a single year: 6,091 flights. We have arranged over 76,000 flights since 1986. Hope Air operates three different flight programs: the Commercial Airline Donation Program, with flights provided by many of Canada’s national and regional air carriers; the Volunteer Pilot Program, with private pilots contributing their skill and planes; and the Flight Purchase Program, which uses donated funds to purchase airline tickets. Currently, 83 per cent of all revenue and in-kind donations are directly applied to Hope Air flight programs. We always work hard to keep administration costs low and our goal is to direct more of your donations to “Getting Canadians To Getting Better”! Please visit www.hopeair.ca to learn more.

Summer sunburn 10-15 minutes of sun on skin is recommended for our bodies to produce vitamin D, a very important part of our health (Longer for darker skin) However, too much sun can cause problems, pain and burns. Summer safety tips · When exposed, wear sunscreen (during water activities reapply every two hours) · Avoid sun exposure at high times (from 10 am to 2 pm) if you must, then wear proper protection – hat, sunglasses, sleeves, sunblock etc. Sunburns are the result of Ultraviolet rays known as UVA and UVB. UVA penetrate the skin more deeply and are considered the main cause of wrinkling and photo aging. It increases the cancer causing effects of UVB and may cause some skin cancers. UVB is far more potent than UVA in producing sunburn, it is considered the main cause of skin cancer, so it’s important to use a sunscreen that protects against both. (TIP: When using a spray sunscreen it’s best to avoid spraying into the face, spray on your hands then rub onto your face). The difference between sunscreen and sunblock?--> Sunblock physically deflect UV rays, while sunscreen chemically absorbs UV rays). When using sunblock or sunscreen it is important to try and remember to get your 10-15 minutes of sun exposure without them so they don’t block the beneficial moderate amount of sun needed for vitamin D production. So you’ve got a sunburn... now what? For sunburn soothing aloe gel is best. When using fresh aloe from a leaf it may be tempting to simply cut it open and apply it, you need to be careful of the barbs on the side of the leaves, it’s easiest to use a spoon to scoop out the gel from the leaf and apply it directly to the skin. It provides great relief, eases burning, and helps to heal skin while moisturizing. After application it should be permitted to dry. My all time favourite home remedies as a child was the Yogurt compress. Use a clean breathable cloth and soak it in whole milk plain yogurt, chilly at first but very soothing on the skin afterwards. When the yogurt gets warm, change the yogurt so it stays cool on the skin.
