Seven students from George Elliot Secondary School recently completed a 15week Junior Firefighter Program which gave them a unique glimpse into what a career in fire-fighting is like. Students received 50 hours of training from January until this past Tuesday when the junior firefighters showed off their newly acquired skills for parents and onlookers at a live fire response demonstration before they received their program completion certificates. “The hands-on training was really interesting. I was surprised by how hot it is inside the suits,” said student Ryan Leighton, a program particicipant. “A lot of other programs have mostly book work. What we learned was really helpful in teaching us how to stay safe, even in forest fires.”

Leighton thought it would be great to have the program experience on his resume and he plans to apply to be a paid-on-call firefighter when he turns 19. Fellow student Florian Maier, an international student from Germany, enjoyed the program, especially entering a burning house as part of a training exercise with firefighters in Vernon. “When we entered the burning house in Vernon, the visibility was limited in the house and it was remarkably hot,” he said. “I had the urge to leave the building immediately but I stayed inside of the house and I won against my own fear which was a really great feeling.” When asked whether he will use the skills he learned in the LCFD program when he goes home to Germany, he said the pro-

gram will help in many ways. “These things have helped me to be confident, mature and independent,” said Maier. “Our instructors always helped and supported us. In addition to their support, they encouraged us when we made mistakes. “I want to use my new skills to train as a firefighter in Germany and this program has definitely changed my career plans, I honestly think that being a firefighter is my career path.” Chelsea Raine was the only female student in the LCFD program this term. She was asked what motivated her to enrol in the program. “My dad is a volunteer firefighter and I wanted to test it out,” Raine said. “I practised with my dad so I could make

sure I could lift everything.” She noted that the hoses were pretty heavy and she confronted her fear of heights by climbing to the top of the ladder. She enjoyed the live fire training and the auto extrication work. “When I’m 19, I want to join the volunteer firefighters and get into a career of firefighting,” she said. Doug Meraw, career and life program coordinator at George Elliot Secondary, noted the students involved in the LCFD program really loved it. To participate in the program students must be in Grade 11 or 12 and have good grades. Rylan Carnegie graduated from GESS a few years ago after taking part in the Junior Firefighter Program and

is still involved with the Lake Country Fire Department as a paid-oncall firefighter. Carnegie assisted the weekly team leader in the training this term. Assistant fire chief Brent Penner said that the junior class had a unique opportunity in being invited to the live fire training in Vernon along with the 2013 LCFD recruits being introduced to their first interior live structure fire training. Regular training and practises were held every Tuesday night to teach basic firefighter skills such as hoisting equipment, ladders, fire streams, ventilation tactics, search and rescue, auto extrication, rope and knots, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), live car fire

and dumpster fires. Students also toured the regional dispatch centre to learn how a call taking and page system works, as well as attending the Kelowna airport where they were exposed to different kinds of firefighting equipment and fire trucks as LCFD is routinely called to the airport to assist with emergency incidents. “This group of students really put a lot into it,” said fire chief Steve Windsor. He congratulated junior firefighters Glenford Downey, William Kelley, Ryan Leighton, Florian Maier, Nicholas Novak, Chelsea Raine and Tristan Ramsay for completing the 2013 program. Oyama Fun Day less than two weeks away Oyama Fun Day is coming up quickly as the annual tribute to Oyama is set for Sunday, June 2. The event is sponsored by the Oyama Community Club and, with the help of many volun-

teers, the club is offering a jam-packed day of fun for families. The event begins at 8 a.m, with a pancake breakfast, a silent auction and the famous ‘Peep Peep Poop’ contest.

The parade is shaping up as the largest and longest yet, drawing many local businesses and groups as well as Okanagan dignitaries. The afternoon activities get underway with

some good old-fashioned games of tugof-war, sack races, ice cream eating contest and egg toss. Youngsters will be entertained with the Kids Games Pavilion, DLC Bounce Zone,

Lake Country Agility Mutts, SECA Watersport Demo, Sportball and lots of other community sponsored fun. Then there’s the Oyama Firemen’s Burger Burn, the Oyama

Sunblush Bake Shop, Lake Country Big Band, Oyama Legion Open House plus the Farmers Market & Artisans. Everyone is invited to come out and and enjoy the day.

Schroeder gains tricks, strength and confidence in Florida KEVIN PARNELL By the time Erik Schroeder arrives home this week, the Okanagan wakeboarder will be a different competitor on the water. For nearly three months, Schroeder, a member of the Lake Country Board and Ski Club, has been working on his trade with top wakeboarders in Florida, training alongside some of the best competitors in the sport. During that time Schroeder, 13, has been continuing his schooling online through the Aberdeen Preparatory School in Kelowna. But it is on the water where he is really learning some new tricks. “Since I arrived in

Erik Schroeder Flordia I have learned 12 new tricks,” said Schroeder. “And I’m getting stronger since my coach makes me do a lot of push-ups everyday. “Florida has been awesome. It has been a fun trip and a great opportunity for me to progress in wakeboarding.” Among the new tricks Schroeder has learned

show off in his upcoming competition schedule. That will see him tak-

ing part in several events leading up to the World Wakeboarding Associ-

ation World Championships in Wisconsin in August. “I’ll be training all year to try and take the title at the worlds in August,” said Schroeder. While in Florida, Schroeder competed in the King of Wake Nautique Wake Games alongside the best wakeboarders and wakeskaters from all over the world in the pro series. Schroeder placed third in the boys division (age 10-14 years). The top riders from each division were then chosen on a team led by a pro wakeboarder and Schroeder was chosen by Canadian pro wakeboarder Rusty Malinoski. “I met so many cool people in the sport,” said

Schroeder of the chance to rub shoulders with the sport’s elite. He added seeing all of the talent has motivated him to keep getting better. “I want to continue riding well and having the time of my life in the process. Ultimately I just want to push myself as much as possible,” he said. Schroeder has long been on the radar for wakeboarding and at just 13 is considered one of the top wakeboarders for his age in Canada. He started wakeboarding at the age of four and this summer he and his parents will move into Lake Country full time, with close access to both Okanagan and Wood Lake.

All six estate wineries on the Scenic Sip Wine Trail in Lake Country came together to offer the community a multi-cultural food and wine experience earlier this month. The event was a huge success. The Taste Lake Country wine and food pairing took place May 11 and concluded with the announcement of a

winner of a case of wine with wines from each of the six Scenic Sip wineries. Phyllis Cannell from Kelowna was the draw winner. At the event, each winery hosted a different food and wine pairing theme drawing plenty of praise from those in attendance. “We were humbled by the overwhelming community response to this

event,” stated the Scenic Sip Wine Trail Wineries group in a press release. “A big thank-you. to all who came out to visit our wineries and take part in the inaugural event. We look forward to similar events in the future.” The Scenic Sip Wine Trail Wineries are 50th Parallel, Intrigue, Gray Monk, Ex Nihilo, Arrowleaf and Ancient Hill.

Ashland weathers economy while maintaining top standards KEVIN PARNELL For the past 17 years, many things have changed at Ashland’s chemical plant located near Winfield in the region’s industrial area. There has been global downsizing that has left the Ashland operation in the Okanagan as the last standing Canadian operation of a company that supplies specialty chemicals, technologies and expertise and operates in more than 100 countries around the world. The company locally has grown to employ 32 people, but has also had to downsize its operations from a sevendays-per-week facility that operates 24 hours a day to one that does the same amount of work on a five-day work week. But the one thing that has remained is the com-

pany’s safety record. In two weeks Ashland’s operation in the Okanagan will celebrate 17 years without a time loss accident. “We’re very proud of our safety record and we work very hard to keep it going,” said Kelly Brown, Ashland plant manager. “We’re working with chemicals and there is lots of movement with trucks and rail cars. Our employees have done a fantastic job.” Brown made the comments as he personally toured Kelowna Lake Country MP Ron Cannan around the site of the plant, which came to the Okanagan in the early 1970s, along when other large manufacturers such as Western Star and Hiram Walker. But Ashland is the last remaining of those original manufacturers that

still operates in the Okanagan. The company manufactures structural plastics for boats and campers, as well as tubs and shower stalls among many other things. It operates mostly in Western Canada and in the Pacific Northwest region with its business split equally on both sides of the border. Among the other changes is a change from hands-on to computerized technology that has seen employees having to change the way they operate and also made the plant more streamlined. “A lot of our customers are innovative builders,” said Brown. “They may be a canoe maker but they are looking to get lighter materials or they are looking for specialty products. We have

a lot of talent here that can help find solutions. Our people make the difference.” Some research on new products is done in the Ashland plant although major research and development is performed at Ashland’s $20-million (US) research and development facility in Ohio. Interestingly, despite the fact that Ashland is located a stone’s throw from the Winfield Arena and a hop-skip-and-ajump away from the District of Lake Country’s Town Centre, the plant is actually located within the Kelowna city limits thanks to a municipal boundary extension prior to Lake Country’s incorporation. That means the company pays its taxes to the City of Kelowna rather than the District of Lake

though there are no immediate plans to do so. As for Cannan, he was in Kelowna for a week to visit with constituents and took the

time to show up for the plant tour, asking questions about the industry, the health of the business and what has made it successful. Cannan says information about local business is key for him to understand the challenges of folks living and working in his home riding. “My list of responsibilities includes representing my constituents, so I find the best way to understand their operation is to meet with them,” said Cannan, who showed up for the tour by himself, minus any kind of political entourage. “I try to hit a couple businesses when I am in the area to find out how they are doing. We have so many specialty and niche businesses here and this is a perfect example.” newsroom@lakecountrynews.net

Clark’s win confounds the ‘experts’

T

he pollsters, pundits and the self-styled rebels of the B.C. Liberal Party were struggling for answers as their conventional wisdom went out the window on election night. In came the B.C. Liberals and Christy Clark for a fourth term, with a 50-seat majority that is stronger than the one they took into the 2013 election. “Welcome to the club,” Alberta Premier Alison Redford wrote on Twitter on election night, referring to Redford’s own win in the face of a wall of polls and pontificators saying she was done. Here’s the next thing to ignore from the media experts who rub shoulders with those pollsters and political strategists. It’s all about the negative ads, they will say, and NDP leader Adrian Dix’s big mistake was to run a “positive” campaign.

BC Views

Tom Fletcher Rubbish. Was their long fight against the harmonized sales tax a positive campaign? Is piling on sham environmental reviews for the express purpose of killing industrial projects a positive idea? “Clearly our message didn’t get out the way we wanted it to get out,” Dix said after watching one of the biggest comebacks in Canadian political history. That’s rubbish too. He got his message out just fine, serving it up in bitesized pieces in a classic front-runner’s campaign

that cynically put off the most difficult choices. He was going to expand government, and restrict industrial development to appease urban voters. Dix’s most dramatic policy shift contributed to his undoing. Mid-campaign, in a decision that surprised even his platform co-chairs, Dix turned against the proposal to twin the TransMountain oil pipeline that winds across B.C. from Alberta to Burnaby. Well, not the pipeline itself, but the prospect of more oil tankers in and out of Vancouver harbour. At least now, more people will understand that Vancouver has been an oil port for nearly a century, and that Canada’s future includes energy development. More people should also appreciate that environmental assessment is not a political game. Andrew Weaver made history as B.C.’s first Green Party MLA.

He came out swinging against Clark’s economic holy grail, development of liquefied natural gas exports from the North Coast. Weaver calls LNG a “pipe dream” that will never materialize. It will be interesting to watch him as he is proved wrong on that, and then as he grapples with gas as a transition fuel that can be used to develop clean energy infrastructure. B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins ran a distant third in his Langley constituency, and his goal of a breakthrough didn’t materialize anywhere. His idea of scrapping the carbon tax on fossil fuels didn’t impress many people, despite his focus on rural and northern B.C. Clark should heed the NDP on at least one thing. Dix promised to move B.C. election dates to the fall, starting in 2017. The idea of giving his anticipated government an extra six months

to govern the province was uncontroversial when Dix proposed it in his party’s election platform, so Clark will probably proceed with it. Another NDP idea Clark should adopt is getting the corporate and union money out of election campaigns. She likely won’t, because her party’s financial advantage is too great, but the time has come for this important reform. The B.C. Liberals’ much-discussed “balanced” budget will now be put to the test over the next few months. The legislature must be convened by September to debate that budget. This should be the last vote based on an untested budget, and the first of many scheduled fall legislature sessions. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Saga of the bald eagle and the magic fishing lure DOUG MAVES Our morning walk in Lake Country lasted longer than we expected. My canine companion Bruno had many marmot holes and rabbit warrens to inspect before breakfast and I gave him a long leash and all the time he wanted. My plan was to leave him at home after breakie with a bone to gnaw on while I hunted the High Rim Trail for signs of black bears ending

their winter hibernation. Today was my birthday, and I was hoping for some birthday luck to fill my new freezer. I fed Bruno, then got behind my laptop to check mail and the markets. I was glad to see a message from my friend and professional fishing guide Rod Hennig in my inbox. I thought he was going to wish me a Happy Birthday, (one of his sons has the same birthday as me), but I was wrong. The story he

had to tell was one of the best ongoing sagas of a fishing lure I have ever heard. While angling with my friend Karen and Rod near Okanagan Lake Resort, Rod told us a story about one of the lures we were using. He had landed a seven pound rainbow while bucktailing and found an old lure in its mouth. He released the fish but kept the lure, one that is no longer made. He always had good

luck with it, and proved it to us as we caught three great fish on a half hour troll. We kept a spawned out female that topped the scales at 14 and 3/4 pounds and released one fish of 12 and one of 11 pounds. I offered him a lot for that lure, but he just smiled and shook his head. I’m glad he did. Rod and a client were out recently and as the

tended to believe that if .I know how to do something, I don’t need to actually do it. But knowing how is not enough. I know how to play the violin. I know what the notes on a page signify. I know where my fingers should go to create those notes. I understand the markings for bow position. But my attempts to create those flowing, liquid cascades of melody sound more like a cat fight than Fritz Kreisler. In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell claims that it takes 10,000 hours of practise—and more—to

achieve mastery of any craft. Others argue for at least 1,000 hours practise just to achieve competence. For years, I belonged to an organization called Faith at Work. Every meeting closed with some form of group prayer. Sometimes we did “one-word” prayers— each person saying a single word that summarized their feeling. Sometimes we tossed a ball of yarn, randomly, across a circle, until everyone had had an opportunity to express a thought. Sometimes we passed a rock hand to hand, imagining what that rock might say to us if it could speak. Each new variation

opened up possibilities. Each new form of prayer broke the shackles of too-familiar routines. Or could have, if I had chosen to practise it. Regularly. Constantly. I didn’t. After all, once I knew how, why should I bother practising? Now I realize that without practise, nothing changes. The kind of person I want to be requires constant practise. Not just once or twice a day. Not even five times a day. But integrated into every element of my life. I can’t be grateful occasionally. I have to practise being grateful constantly. I can’t be compassionate now and then, when

the situations arise. I have to be compassionate all the time. Random acts of kindness make a useful slogan, but random acts are not enough. I have to practise kindness daily. I can only develop friendliness, generosity, trustworthiness, on a full-time basis. Anything less is like an alcoholic claiming he can stay sober and get sloshed at the same time. My elbow’s physical health is teaching me some important lessons about my spiritual health. Author Jim Taylor lives in Okanagan Centre.

opinion ▼ PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS

Supreme court ruling changes way lawyers make disbursements

I

n my Nov. 1, 2012, column, I described a victory in the highest court in New Brunswick that I predicted would “pave the way for a change in the law in other jurisdictions, including British Columbia.” I am very pleased to report that a May 13, 2013, decision of the British Columbia Supreme Court has met my prediction head on. The legal issue has to do with the interest incurred financing expenses (known as “disbursements”) that lawyers pay to prosecute personal injury claims. Prosecuting an injury claim can be very expensive. It can cost tens of thousands of dollars to

take a single case to trial. The vast majority of cases settle before trial, but when accepting your case your lawyer is committing to proceed to trial to achieve justice if the insurance company fails to make a fair offer. The law has always been, at least in the “forever” of the 17 1/2 years

that I have been in practice, that the insurance company must reimburse those expenses as “costs” at the conclusion of a successful claim. This is, of course, in addition to paying the fair compensation that has been agreed or ordered by the court. Someone has to come up with those expenses until the claim is resolved, though. The money has to be borrowed from somewhere, and that “somewhere” is going to charge interest. The lawyer typically puts his or her own neck on the line, personally guaranteeing the debt, which should give you added confidence when a lawyer agrees to take on

your case. The actual interest expense, though, is passed on to you as a term of most contingency fee arrangements. Interest rates are historically low. I think I am paying in the neighbourhood of three per cent interest on my mortgage. Unfortunately, as willing as banks are to lend money at low interest rates to fund a mortgage, secured by your house, banks are reluctant to lend money to fund disbursements. To give you a bit of context, at any given time I’ve got myself personally extended approaching $1 million financing disbursements on the personal injury cases I am prosecuting.

After mortgaging my home to the hilt, I’m left poking around to find “sub-prime” lenders. Sub-prime lenders charge much higher interest rates. For example, I’m having to pay 10 per cent interest for some of my disbursement financing, and I would consider myself a very low risk borrower. Up until now, while insurance companies have had to reimburse your disbursements, themselves, as “costs,” they have gotten away with not having to pay the interest reasonably incurred to finance those disbursements. At the high rates of interest involved, and the fact that cases can take years to resolve, that in-

terest expense can be thousands of dollars. That’s a few thousand dollars essentially coming out of your pocket that has gone uncompensated. The decision of Mr. Justice Savage, which for me read like a beautiful piece of music, has changed that. As of May 13, 2013, the law in this province is that a defending insurance company is accountable not only to reimburse reasonably incurred disbursements but is also accountable to reimburse reasonably incurred interest to finance those disbursements. It’s only fair. The law has finally come around to deliver fairness on this point.

Undoubtedly, the insurance company defending the case will appeal Mr. Justice Savage’s decision to our highest court, the British Columbia Court of Appeal. I will be waiting with bated breath for the result of that eventual appeal. This column is intended to provide general information about injury claims. It is not a substitute for retaining a lawyer to provide legal advice specifically pertaining to your case. Paul Hergott is a lawyer at Hergott Law in West Kelowna. paul@hlaw.ca

Help the Lions Club prepare the Lake Country Easter Seal Camp for summer fun

Talent came to be heard

This Saturday, May 25, the Lake Country Lions will be holding a paintfest and a general clean-up of the grounds at the Lake Country Easter Seal Camp. The dorms are in need of paint as are some of the other buildings within the facility. The local Lions Club would appreciate any help from individuals interested in volunteering for this worthwhile project.

The Easter Seal Camp is located at 1790 Davidson Rd. in the District of Lake Country. The painting and clean-up will begin at 9 a.m. and will end upon completion of the job. Bring your paint brushes, rakes and gloves and be prepared to have a fun time with a great bunch of people. If you require more information, contact Rick Harker at 250-7664416 or 250-766-2186.

The performances are in the books and this year’s edition of the Lake Country Open Mic Has Talent contest was the best ever, according to event organizers. Musicians from across Lake Country had three chances to take part in the contest which was judged by a panel, with the winner set to be unveiled in June. Singer/songwriters each performed three of

Suggestions for improving our mental wellness Not too long ago— just after the Second World War—few people in North America brushed their teeth with any regularity. Now, the mere thought of going an entire day or night without brushing one’s teeth is simply out of the question for most. Hopefully, someday in the near future, a similar attitude will prevail regarding mental well-being, says Dr. Matt

Mumber, an oncologist and author of Sustainable Wellness: An Integrative Approach to Transform Your Mind, Body and Spirit. (www. sustainablewellnessonline.com), co-authored by yoga therapist Heather Reed. “Human happiness and well-being are rudderless without awareness, which I define as

Winners will be announced at the next Open Mic night held on June 5.

Understanding Lyme disease important at this time of tick season

I

have had many patients recently ask me about ticks and Lyme disease. The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently doing surveillance of Lyme disease in Canada as recent studies demonstrate the risk of this disease is growing in our country. Lyme disease is an illness that is contracted by contact with a bacterium known as borrelia burgdorferi. This disease, spread by the bite of certain types of ticks, is the most common vector borne disease throughout North America. This is how the disease cycle starts. Ticks that live in wooded areas get infected when they feed on small rodents and birds that carry the bacterium. Ticks then spread the bacteria to humans via

their bite. Most often, tick bites happen unknowingly, as they are usually painless. In Kelowna, the western blacklegged tick is the insect that is responsible for carrying Lyme disease. Ticks are classified as an arachnid that feeds on blood. They are normally about 3 to 5 mm in length, but can be smaller and red or dark brown in colour. It is estimated that 10 per cent of all ticks carry Lyme disease. The first sign of Lyme disease, secondary to a tick bite is a perfectly circular rash that is usually at least five centimetres in diameter. This begins about three days after the initial bite and can persist up to eight weeks. With this rash, skin irritation, itchiness, pain and swelling are not usually common.

Ask Dr. Thiel

Markus Thiel Systemically, the individual may suffer from headache, muscle and joint pain, fever and chills and swollen lymph nodes. If untreated, symptoms may continue on to central and peripheral nervous system dysfunction, arthritis and arthritic symptoms, extreme fatigue and multiple skin rashes. The most important part of the diagnosis is that it needs to take place

early in the process. Most clinicians recognize the typical bull’s-eye appearance to the rash, however, this is the less common variant. Normally the rash is uniformly red with no bull’s-eye presentation. In fact, only 20 per cent of these bites present as a bull’s-eye appearance. While viral illnesses and other bacterial infections can cause symptoms of fever, fatigue and pain that mimic Lyme disease, they do not have large distinct round or oval rashes like Lyme disease. In addition, most viral illnesses have typical cold symptoms of runny nose or prominent cough which are not common in Lyme disease. Lyme disease is successfully diagnosed by the doctors assessment, evidence and history of encounters with ticks

and laboratory testing. Although, there is controversy as to whether or not health Canada is testing appropriately for Lyme disease and many individuals are having their testing done in the United States for confirmation and subsequent treatment of Lyme disease. Treatment currently consists of about two to four weeks of antibiotic treatment. However patients who are diagnosed in the later stages of the disease have persistent and recurrent symptoms. These individuals are known to have something called post-Lyme disease syndrome. The current research indicates that the mainstream medical community is divided as to the prevalence and the presence of Lyme disease in Canada. Prevention is always

the best medicine. During the spring months, when ticks are most prevalent, be mindful when walking in wooded or grassy areas that these ticks may coexist. Wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts in addition to closed shoes as opposed to sandals offers a barrier that is usually sufficient. It may sound a little paranoid, but my wife and I routinely check the kids when they come in from playing outside by doing a careful inspection of the exposed areas and their hair. Three friends of ours have taken ticks off of their children in the last week. If you do come across a tick that has embedded itself in the skin, carefully remove the tick using tweezers. Be sure to grasp the ticks heads and mouth as close to the skin as possible and

pull slowly. Do not twist or rotate or squash the tick in an attempt to remove it. Wash the bites with soap and water and disinfect with alcohol. Keep the tick for a number of weeks and observe for the presence of a rash. Contact your doctor immediately if you see any symptoms whatsoever. I am by no means endorsing the fact that we should all put on our Hazmat suits for our next walk through the forest, as the prevalence of this disease is still quite low. However, it is important to be aware of it as its consequences can be devastating if left undetected and not diagnosed in time. Markus Thiel is a chiropractor practicing in Kelowna. askdrthiel@shaw.ca.

Mental wellbeing: Telomere test offers genetic insights

D Healing Minds

Paul Latimer

o you know whether or not you have short telomeres? Strange question, but knowing the answer may provide some insight into the state of your health or your risk of de-

veloping certain health problems in the future. Telomeres are part of our genetic code—often likened to the plastic tips on the ends of shoelaces. They seem to protect the ends of chromosomes and keep cells

from aging too quickly. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter and once they are too short, the cell can no longer divide. In healthy cells, telomeres also rebuild. Many studies have

linked unusually short telomeres to health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic stress. Now, one of the world’s foremost experts in the field has cre-

ated a test to measure people’s telomeres—and it will likely be available to the public sometime this year. Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn is a researcher at the University of Califor-

nia in San Francisco. She won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 2009 for her work on telomeres. As scientific under-

Add mental health to physical well being HEALTH FROM A7 the quality of paying attention to what’s going on in the present moment from an inquisitive, nonjudgmental and focused perspective,” said Mumber. After checking off a healthy diet and exercise from the list, how does one go about ensuring a healthy mind? Mumber and Reed suggest the following ideas: • Beginner’s mind is the ability to see things with new eyes. A beginner’s mind opens people to the world of possibilities that exist in the present moment. That does not mean throwing away good ideas from the past; rather, it means to entertain new ideas with a truly open sensibility. • Trust: Believe in your authority to know your own body, thoughts and feelings. We need to have the confidence necessary to trust that our thoughts

and feelings at any given moment have value. • Non-judging is the ability to see things for what they are, to hold an open and neutral place for whatever comes up within and around you, without thinking of anything as categorically better or worse than anything else. • Patience is a willingness to continue with the process of paying attention on purpose even when it appears that no progress is being made. Learning and growing through mindful practice happens with time and we can’t force the outcome. • Acceptance refers to allowing whatever comes up in the moment to be held in our field of awareness. This is not the same as giving up or being passive; acceptance is merely acknowledgement. • Letting go is refusing to attach to specific thoughts, feelings or behaviours. This can feel

like losing something, but every time we let go, we open ourselves to something new and, potentially, deeper. • Non-striving: In our goal-oriented society, this may seem

counterintuitive. However, non-striving refers only to practicing mindfulness without expectation of some future goal or dream, which helps us better live in the now.

Before the disasters that make great stories, think of your pet’s needs The May long weekend symbolizes the start of summer for many. And that means loading the kids and the pets into the car for a road trip. Before you start planning trips to the beach and summer getaways, keep in mind that it’s important to plan ahead

for pet travel and always keep the best interests of your furry, four-legged friend in mind. Traveling with your pet can be a wonderful and bonding experience or a not so pleasant one. It’s all a matter of proper planning and preparation.

Here are the top tips to ensure your summer time getaways with your pet is a safe one.

HEADS INSIDE

Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but never travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some U.S. states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous.

FREQUENT PIT STOPS

Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area, particularly when you pet needs

a potty break and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent as well as a temporary travel identification tag.

PROPER HYDRATION

During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

WATCH THE FOOD INTAKE

It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food

and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!).

DON’T LEAVE THEM ALONE

Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 45 C in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

PRACTICE RESTRAINT

Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by

No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet.

SAFE AND COMFORTABLE:

Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy. Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip. Dogs need skills for their safety, your peace of mind Before going into teaching skills to your dog, it’s important to understand some of the things that may influence how you teach a particular skill. Factors such as age, confidence, physical limitations and motivation will each play

a part in how you train. Let’s address each one of these factors individually.

AGE Puppies are blank slates and have had less time to rehearse and commit

If you have an active lifestyle then please consider me! I would do great in a home where I am the only pet as I tend to like my humans all to myself. I love catnip, bouncy toys and looking out the window. Please ask Staff for an introduction and we will meet soon!

to unwanted behaviours. You can have real influence on a puppy by insuring that he or she has the continued opportunity to interact with other puppies and dogs after they leave their litter and by purposefully introducing them to as many sights, sounds and smells as you can (in a non threatening way) to help to create a confident, social animal. By managing their environment, you can keep unwanted behaviours from happening in the first place. But a puppy can be tough and require lots and lots of attention. If you choose to adopt an older dog, you may have to spend time managing problem behaviours first. Your ability to socialize a dog beyond its ‘critical period’ (to 12 weeks) is limited, so while you may be able to influence somewhat your

keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. Smaller pets are best suited for pet car seats. The car seat is secured in the back seat using a seat belt and your pet is secured in the car seat with a safety harness. In addition to its safety features, a pet car seat will prop up your smaller pet, allowing them to better look out the window.

dog’s confidence, pretty much what you see is what you get. But unlike puppies an older dog may already have progressed through their super destructive chew period and with proper supervision should be easily house-trained. Training an adolescent dog comes with its own set of challenges. Dogs hit adolescence around five months and adolescence can last until the dog is two or three depending on the breed. Adolescence is characterized by more independent thinking; dogs will become less interested in you and more interested in the environment. Dogs go through their final phase of teething during this time. There is also a fear period associated with this phase—

confident dogs may suddenly turn shy and fearful. An adolescent dog will require that you be consistent in your management and training.

CONFIDENCE

Or the lack thereof. Learning is stressful. Keep an eye on your dog while training and watch for signs of stress— yawning, bows, scratching in the middle of a training session, shakeoffs. These behaviours don’t necessarily indicate that your dog is unduly traumatized by learning, in fact, there is a good type of stress (called eustress) that actually enhances learning. Distress, the bad kind of stress, is what you are trying to avoid. You can do that by keeping train-

Our Little MVP “There must be one heck of a tourney going on in heaven for her to be called up to play so early!”

LISA GUYLAINE PAYNE October 4, 1972 – May 14, 2013 After successfully beating Breast Cancer in 2011, Lisa was called to the plate, to once again fight the disease - but this time it was a fight she had no chance of winning. Born in Terrace, BC, Lisa was a naturally gifted athlete with a wide circle of friends. From the moment she picked up a ball glove in her late teens, she was destined to be on the field playing on Provincial and National ball teams and frequently acquiring numerous awards and prizes. Her main loves though, were her family; marrying Thomas Payne on July 17, 1993, and with him creating two beautiful children, Kaylie Brooke Payne and Darcie Lee Payne. Lisa and her family moved to Kelowna in 1998 where she quickly joined almost every ball team that was looking for a player...imagine their surprise when they saw her play! Lisa played for teams in Winfield, Vernon and Kelowna and will be missed by all who knew her. Lisa also touched the hearts of all the people she worked with. After getting her LPN in 2007 during the few years that the family lived in Calgary, she then returned to live in Winfield and worked with and for some wonderful people at Noric House in Vernon. Her favorite song sums up her philosophy... Good Life by One Republic “Hopelessly I feel like there might be something that I’ll miss Hopelessly I feel like the window closes oh so quick Hopelessly I’m taking a mental picture of you now’ Cause hopelessly the hope is we have so much to feel good about, Oh, this has gotta be the good life This has gotta be the good life This could really be a good life, good life”

Lisa will also be missed by her parents, Jean-Guy and Carmen Mailloux, by her brothers Denis Mailloux and Rene Mailloux (wife Laurie, Jordan, Alyssa, Sarah), and by her sister Lynne Nordstrom (husband Larry, Aaron, Kenny, Nick) as well as her father and mother in-law Gilbert and Anne Payne, sisters-in-law Dani Barnett (husband Wade, Chris, Mark) and Susan Payne. In lieu of flowers Lisa and the family have asked that donations be made to the Hospice House in your area to support the wonderful work that they do to ensure that our journey from this world is made with peace and compassion. Special thanks go to Dr. Oswald and his staff for all the care they gave her in her fight. We will never forget you little one....you were loved and will be missed by all.

Congratulations Junior Firefighters

Finding your way around the Municipal website…

Congratulations to George Elliot Secondary students Glenford Downey, William Kelley, Ryan Leighton, Florian Maier, Nicholas Novak, Chelsea Raine and Tristan Ramsay for completing the 15-week LCFD Junior Firefighter Program last week!

Property Tax Notices are being sent out this week and you may want to know how to conveniently claim your Home Owner Grant on-line.

Each Jr. firefighter received 50 hours of training in basic firefighter skills such as hoisting equipment, ladders, fire streams, ventilations tactics, search & rescue, auto extrication, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), ropes and knots, ladder set up and live car fire and dumpster fires. Great work everyone!

Tip: Your password is the “EHOG Access Code” shown on the top left of the Property Tax Notice below your Roll number.

Visit lakecountry.bc.ca and click on the Home Owner Grant

Quick Link

Reminder: Claim your grant prior to the July 2 tax due date even if you are not paying your taxes at that time. If the grant is not claimed prior to the due date the late penalty is also charged on the outstanding grant amount.

We all know that people and bears are incompatible in our communities and understand that bears are easily attracted to food sources. Therefore, everyone can take some very basic steps to prevent the bears from being drawn into conflict with humans. Please take the time to check out the Bear Aware website and see what you and your neighbours can do to minimize human-bear conflict. http://www.bearaware.bc.ca/
