Amsterdam passengers give wharf a workout More than 1,000 passengers from the Holland America cruise ship Amsterdam gave the new wharf at Harbour Quay a workout on Wednesday when they came to Port Alberni for a day’s stop during a three-day repositioning cruise from Vancouver to Port Alberni and
Seattle. A new ramp and three docks were set up off the wharf to accommodate the water taxis. New light standards were installed earlier this month in anticipation of the ship’s arrival. This setup differs from the last visit in 2011, when the ship was docked at the port authority.

Crews are ready to secure a water taxi to a new dock off the wharf at Harbour Quay Wednesday morning to bring passengers from the Amsterdam onshore for a day trip.
Passengers from the Amsterdam go through a security checkpoint set up at Harbour Quay. This is different than the last cruise ship visit, where the ship was docked at the port authoirty wharf near the red and white lighthouse building.

Teen seriously hurt in park assault Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News
Port Alberni RCMP are on the search for a man who sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl near Roger Creek Park Wednesday evening, leaving her with injuries so severe that she was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital. “It’s suffice to say that her injuries had to be very serious in order for her to be airlifted out of the community,” said
RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jen Allan. “Her injuries are quite severe.” The assault occurred in the late afternoon Tuesday near Gertrude and Roger Streets by the railroad tracks. The victim phoned 9-1-1 at 5 p.m. for help after her attacker left. The attacker is described as a First Nations man, early to mid-20s, wearing dark clothing, a red coloured baseball cap and carrying a backpack. Allan wouldn’t confirm
whether the girl was walking alone or with friends, nor whether the victim and attacker knew each other, stating the investigation is ongoing and the police will release more information in due time. School District 70 assistant superintendent Greg Smyth confirmed that the girl is an Alberni District Secondary Student and a former Vast student. Neither Smyth nor Allan would confirm or deny rumours on social media that
precautions, walk in groups, stick to well-travelled routes and to call in any suspicious activity. However, the park is not considered unsafe. “Indications in the early phase of the investigation is this is an isolated and random attack,” Allan added. Anyone with information regarding this attack are asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
the girl is an exchange student from China. Smyth said there are councillors on hand at ADSS to help students and staff who may need it. “We are shocked and there is indignation that something horrific like this can happen,” Smyth said. “This is a very sombre reminder to students to take precautions to ensure their personal safety.” The RCMP also said the public should take extra

Man charged in work site thefts City approves new fund A 30-year-old man has been charged with possession of stolen property, possession of break-in instruments and various driving infractions after an incident on Comox Trail Logging Road. In the early morning hours of May 15 Port Alberni RCMP received a report that a large quantity of diesel fuel along with tools and logging equipment batteries had been stolen from a rural work site. On May 16, police
RCMP responded to a rural area of the Comox Trail Logging Road after a suspicious vehicle was located by members of a forestry company who were patrolling work sites. The vehicle was driving erratically and collided with a logging truck. The driver and passenger fled the scene and were later located and held by members of the forestry company
until police arrived. Police arrested Eric Wolff, 30, who has been charged with two counts of possession of stolen property, possession of break in instruments, dangerous driving and driving while prohibited. Wolff made his first appearance in court on Tuesday, May 21. Police also arrested a 29-year-old female passenger, who has charges pending. Police are asking people to contact the Port Alberni RCMP if
they have had recent thefts from their worksite to assist with identifying recovered property. Police are also reminding the public to ensure their work sites are locked up and tools are marked so they can easily be identified. If anyone can provide information about it this crime or any other, they are asked to contact the local detachment at 723-2424, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
COUNCIL: | New reserve offsets carbon emissions. Port Alberni City Council has adopted a Carbon Fund Reserve that will allow the city to make annual contributions offsetting its net carbon emissions and keeping its carbon neutral commitment. According to a report, the city has reserved all of its Climate Action Revenue Incentive
funds in the amount of $37,000 per year, the city will need to continue to make additional contributions of about $23,000 per year to maintain neutrality, but that amount will decrease as emissions are reduced. Council-approved expenditures from the fund will then be made for any initiative, project or purchase that will reduce the city’s or community’s carbon emissions
Program (CARIP) rebates as well as Upnit Power dividends in a Green Energy Fund since 2008. The fund has a current balance of $102,271 which will be transferred to the carbon fund once it is created. City manager Ken Watson said no tax revenue will need to be contributed to the fund for 2013. Given the city’s current greenhouse gas emission levels, and future CARIP

TEAM CHRIS TURNER Chris Turner, of “The Chris Turner Experience”, was born in Port Alberni in December, 1986, to parents Stephen and Jacqui Turner. He was 12 weeks premature and weighed 3 pounds 4 ounces. Chris spent his first five years growing up with his sister, Jill, at his family’s corner store, Neill Grocery, which was located on the corner of Neill Street and Ninth Avenue. In 1992, the Turner family sold the store and moved to Cameron Heights. Chris spent his time as a kid building tree forts in the forest, playing ball-hockey in the street, mountain biking, and soap-box racing down the hill in front of his residence. He also enjoyed a number of different sports including soccer, softball, and football. His first job was delivering the Alberni Valley Times which he did for six years. While in high school, Chris worked as a Shift Manager at the local McDonald’s Restaurants in Port Alberni, where he learned many of his valuable customer service skills. In high school, Chris focused on residential design/drafting and construction. In grade 12, Chris won three gold medals for his design and drafting at the North Island Regional Skills Competition, the BC Skills Competition, and the Canadian National Skills Completion. After graduating from ADSS in 2005, Chris started his carpentry apprenticeship, but later decided to return to his architectural design and drafting background, working for an architectural firm in Parksville. Although he had a passion for the architectural design and drafting he was doing, what he truly started to miss was interacting with customers and providing them with great customer service. Being a long-time Alberni Toyota customer and having a family of long-time Alberni Toyota customers, Chris decided to take his passion for Toyota vehicles and customer service, and as part of the sales team, merge them together to create “The Chris Turner Experience”. Not only is Chris busy at Alberni Toyota with “The Chris Turner Experience”, but Chris is also busy getting ready for his upcoming wedding. Chris met a wonderful young woman in Nanoose and they will be married on June 29th, 2013. Chris and Caitlin met for coffee three years ago and have been inseparable ever since. When Chris gets time off from the office, you will find him hitting golf balls at the local courses, hiking back trials around the valley, walking the beaches around the island, spending time with family and friends, or just relaxing at home. Although work is still work, Chris says that working at Alberni Toyota is about making friends and working with family.

Minutes after setting up a road block at Sutton Pass on the start of the May long weekend, RCMP Cpl. Mike Elston issued three tickets: one being a 90-day driving suspension to a drunk driver. “It was a fluke,” said Elston, who headed up the multi-agency road check on Pacific Rim Highway and Sutton Pass on Friday afternoon. “In my 15 years of policing I have never got them back-to-back.” Between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. approximately 650 vehicles went through the road check staffed by 15 officers from the RCMP’s Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and conservation officers. There were 63 violations resulting in tickets and warnings. Officers checked for the usual traffic safety violations such

as driving without insurance, driving under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt, as well as hunting and fishing violations. One violation was particularly troubling, Elston said. An officer noticed a one- and two-year-old sleeping on the back seats of a vehicle instead of being secured in baby car seats. “These people needed to get family to get them [baby] car seats in Port Alberni,” Elston explained. “They didn’t own [baby] car seats.” There were two immediate roadside
vehicle suspensions for drunk driving, four failure to wear a seatbelt citations, eight failure to display an “N” by new drivers, five drivers ticketed for failure to produce a driver’s license, one open liquor seizure and one marijuana seizure. Warnings were served to 14 vehicles that needed to replace headlights or windshields. Targeting the Sutton Pass area with this many officers representing various agencies was something different for the area and was a result of a
– Cpl. Mike Elston recommendation from a RCMP officer. “He’s a frequent West Coast visitor both for work and for pleasure purposes,” Elston said. “We figured why not give it a try. Sutton Pass is not an area we do team-based enforcement very often because of the location.” Elston explained the area has poor cellphone reception and is difficult to get to as the Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services is stationed in Oceanside but their coverage includes Parksville, Port Alberni and parts of Nanaimo and Tofino.

Relay cancelled SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News
The Canadian Cancer Society has cancelled the 2013 Port Alberni Relay for Life that was scheduled to take place June 22-23 at Bob Dailey Stadium. “The decision was made (Thursday, May 16, 2013) at noon that due to the small number of teams and participants, it was just not going to be feasible to put the event on,” community giving coordinator Melissa Bigmore said. BC and Yukon Division Relay for Life manager Bryanna Baker said the planned resurfacing of Bob Dailey Stadium was also a consideration. Baker said the city
told organizers the resurfacing might be done in June and they couldn’t guarantee the venue, but parks and recreation director Scott Kenny said that wasn’t the case. “That was a very slim possibility,” he said. The tender closed Tuesday and won’t be awarded until next week, so work likely won’t be done until July or August. The Relay for Life has been a mainstay in the Alberni Valley since the mid-2000s, taking place the third weekend in June. The decision to cancel is personally disappointing to Bigmore, who joined the relay several years ago after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“It’s definitely a sad occasion for me. I am truly disheartened that this has happened,” she said. “My heart goes out to those survivors that were going to be experiencing their first relay. It saddens me that they won’t be able to do that in their community.” Eleven teams had signed up for the 2013 relay, and had already raised more than $5,000. That money will still go towards the cancer society. editor@albernivalleynews.com
Check out ‘Reel-ay’ The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life may be cancelled in Port Alberni this year, but Paramount Theatre’s team has a Plan B. Manager James Huysmans has organized Reel-ay for life, a movie marathon that will take place overnight June 22-23—the same time the actual relay was to have taken place. He hopes to start the 12-hour marathon with the 9 p.m. late show on June 22.

Loss of relay a blow to city Polarized politics a costly system News that the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Port Alberni has been cancelled just five weeks before the event was to take place came as a sad surprise on Friday. The 12-hour, overnight Relay for Life began in Port Alberni in the mid-2000s, and the early events drew upwards of 40 teams. This year, despite some initial challenges finding volunteers for the organizing committee, a dozen teams were entered and had already raised a recorded $5,000. That money is used for cancer research. Five thousand dollars, while not the same sum that teams have raised in the past, is not chump change. Teams had committed to fundraisers over the next few weeks leading up to the relay, which was supposed to happen overnight June 22-23 at Bob Dailey Stadium. Some of our readers are asking why the event was even cancelled, saying no contribution is too small when it comes to kicking cancer to the curb. We echo the view of one reader, who wrote that a low turnout should never shut down an event that impacts so many lives. Local coordinator Melissa Bigmore was committed to seeing the event through, but said the BC Yukon Division of the Canadian Cancer Society made the decision to cancel. We only hope they had a better reason than lack of fundraising. In the meantime, we applaud the Paramount Theatre team for their moment of genius, a 12-hour ‘Reel-ay for Life’ movie event starting at 9 p.m. on June 22. Other businesses, like Serious Coffee, have already jumped on board — proving once again that Port Alberni really is a community with heart.

ICTORIA – One benefit of the surprising fourth term for the B.C. Liberal Party is that the provincial government won’t be subjected to another big, expensive ideological remake. Taxpayers are spared a bill of millions in severance pay for deputy ministers and other senior staff who would be purged in large numbers in the left-right lurch that has defined B.C. politics for a generation. BC Ferries will continue as an arms-length operation, with ferry commissioner Gord Macatee in charge of service levels as well as fare caps. The service rationalization that the government set out in the past year will continue. The NDP platform vowed to “position BC Ferries as an integral part of B.C.’s transportation
infrastructure.” Freely translated, that means “suck BC Ferries back into government,” as one of their strident supporters likes to say. That would conceal the growth of the subsidy and facilitate the kind of political and union interference that resulted in the current structure. There will be no $10 million rehash of the BC Rail sale and subsequent seven-year trial, to enrich elite lawyers once again. The NDP promised an inquiry for strictly political reasons, to drag their opponents through the scandal one more time. It was not a prelude to “nationalizing” the province’s train service, dream scenarios of the NDP provincial council notwithstanding. Costly legal confrontations over development projects have
been avoided. The Jumbo Glacier Resort proponents finally won a 20-year fight for permits, and the NDP promised to take them away. A larger ideological battle over private power contracts has also been avoided. The B.C. Liberals have been caught by a sudden shift in power markets caused by cheap, abundant natural gas, but the billions in commitments to independent power producers isn’t the fiasco that critics have described. If all those privately developed run-of-river hydro projects were owned and operated by BC Hydro, the Crown corporation would have to staff them and maintain them all for the next 40 years. There are differing views about the future demand for electricity in B.C.,
‘This election could be the beginning of the end for the old left-right model for B.C. politics.’

but it can only rise with industry and population growth. A decade of federal and provincial work to end duplication of environmental assessment won’t be undone. NDP leader Adrian Dix’s promise for “made in B.C.” reviews was a strategy to choke resource projects to death under endless procedure, which may yet be the fate the Jumbo resort. We will have a Seniors’ Advocate office, but it won’t be staffed up to duplicate the Ombudsperson’s role of taking complaints. That’s good, since the Ombudsperson has become ineffective, labouring for years over a massive seniors’ report with so many recommendations it sank like a stone. We have 85 seniors’ advocates now. They’re called MLAs, and they definitely take complaints. They have staffed offices in their home communities and in Victoria. Continued / A9

To the Editor, As time goes by, we’re getting more and more nutty ideas from the port authority and city hall. Specifically, there’s the proposal for a retail condominium/ hotel development at Alberni Harbour Quay which would involve razing the marine building there and ousting the current tenants. If there are more than a few units, there would be no parking available in the adjacent area around the waterfront restaurant and the current marine building site. Proponents of the development would also have to buy the old Shell Canada property for parking. Moreover, it’s highly unlikely that the Donut Shop and the Clock Tower Gallery would be able to afford the high rents in any new development. And where would they go in the meantime? And, again, parking would have to be reserved for retail businesses, locals, and tourists, not condo owners. The second balmy idea is the suggestion
that there might be “a liquefied natural gas site down the Alberni Inlet,” a preposterous idea worse than the idle speculation about a container trans shipment facility. Where would the LNG come from? Alberta? Northwest B.C.? In sum, we have more silly proposals from the port authority and from a city council that can’t reduce operating expenses and relied for budget cuts this year on one-time cuts from the McLean Mill dam project and from the new vehicle budget. God help us! Richard Berg, Port Alberni
RVers asked to get involved To the Editor, The other day I wrote different communities to find out what there position was on Residential Recreational Vehicle Parking in their community. I e-mailed the following: Town of Qualicum Beach, Parksville, City of Nanaimo. To date, I have heard from Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo. Their regulations are ones that
encourage folks to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and to be respectful of their neighbours. Please share this information with others and mark your calendars for the “Zoning Bylaw Review” community meeting and open house: Monday, June 17. Open House: 4-6 p.m. Presentation/ Q&A: 6:30-8 p.m. Six issues will be reviewed: Suites in residential neighbourhoods; Seniors and special needs housing; RV parking; commercial revitalization; chickens and bees; and urban agriculture. Consider driving and parking your RV at Echo Centre. Happy Trails, Gerry Walerius, Port Alberni
Residents taxed to max To the Editor, It is more that just another hated tax; the provincial carbon tax and Pacific Carbon Trust are glaring symbols of a failed political system that is monstrously imbalanced and out of touch with taxpayers. The tax accomplishes nothing according to our
auditor general, has been rejected by all other jurisdictions in North America as an unworkable concept, yet we see no move to address this from either main party. We are in financial distress as a province, taxed to the limit, yet here we are tilting at windmills with this expensive game. We are a symbolic innovator, says one party in justification; the other at one time opposed it, but when it didn’t get them elected, they did a 180 and said they really loved it all the time. Whatever your degree of environmentalist commitment, the whole thing analytically nets out as just plumb dumb. So, if it is such a wasteful disaster as our auditor general says and the public generally hates it and can ill afford it, where are the voices of reason and corrective change? This is a sequel to the HST failure of governance and it is the epitome of a general failure of the system. To all politicians who advocate nefariously, and to all politicians who say nothing when they should speak out, they are flirting with sinking this
obnoxious ship they sail on. Roy Roope, Summerland
One Wright, too many wrongs
To the Editor, One Wright doesn’t make up for Mike Duffy’s litany of wrongs. Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s chief of staff, had enough integrity to resign for his ethical blundering. Duffy, the devious recipient of Wright’s $90,000 hush-money payment, doesn’t have an ounce of integrity but certainly has pounds and pounds of gall. If there are any untainted senators left in the Red Chamber, they should stand up in unison and boo Mr. Duffy if he dares put a foot inside their so-called chamber of sober second thought. To do otherwise is to cowardly condone liars and fraudsters. This sordid affair highlights Stephen Harper’s empty promise to run an honest and accountable government. Mister Harper is a Conservative emperor without any clothes. Lloyd Atkins, Vernon

But with God, it is a willing heart and a childlike trust that he treasures. His precious revelations, undiscerned by the worldly wise, He unfolds to His trusting, faithful followers. It is this principle that encourages us to serve God, no matter how weak or helpless we may feel, knowing that it is not our abilities or talents that will make a difference in the lives of others, but the presence and powerof God working through us.

EAO rejects Compliance Coal application Black Press
The provincial Environment Assessment Office (EAO) has decided not
to accept a Raven coal mine application for detailed review. In a May 16 letter to John Tapics, CEO of Compliance
Coal Corp., EAO project assessment manager Tracy James refers to “the major information requirements”

Stephen Ellis said in a press release on Monday that Compliance will review the EAO’s comments, provide additional information and then resubmit their application for review again. The completed application, Ellis said, contains approximately 12,000 pages and fills more than 10 binders. Stacey Gaiga of Coal Free Alberni takes this step as a small victory. “This comprehensive process appears to be working,” she said. “If this is an
the EAO states Compliance has not adequately addressed in its submission. Should Compliance wish to resubmit its application, James asks Tapics to first incorporate information that it has requested. If a revised application is received, the EAO would screen that submission, James added, saying Compliance would be informed in writing whether at that point the application had been accepted for formal environmental review. There has been much opposition to the mine in Port Alberni and the Comox Valley, with concern expressed about negative effects on Baynes Sound shellfish aquaculture. Half of B.C.’s shellfish aquaculture industry is in Baynes Sound.

The Raven Underground Coal Project near the Comox Valley communities of Buckley Bay and Fanny Bay is expected to produce about 30 million tonnes of coal and rock over a
Port Alberni has the potential to be nearly 100 per cent broom free, says the founder of the Broombusters Invasive Plant Society. Joanne Sales, on behalf of a number of concerned Alberni Valley citizens, spoke to council last month to discuss the Scotch broom issue in the
region. “We have more Scotch broom here than in Scotland,” Sales said. Scotch broom is a non-native aggressive weed that crowds out native plants and prevents the growth of forests and overruns farms, fields and pastures, Sales said. In addition, it is a severe allergy irritant and a
major fire hazard, particularly in parts of the central Island, where the biggest outbreaks are. Because Port Alberni’s broom population is less than other areas, regular coordinated volunteer efforts could contribute to the Valley being completely broom free, Sales said. Broombusters
works to help control the pest plant through liaising with municipalities, volunteers, media, and others, and coordinating broomremoving work bees. “We only cut, we do not pull, we do not use any poisons. When you pull the broom, it disturbs the soil and more seeds germinate,” Sales said.

my MBA,” says Black. “I ended up as a inancial analyst for the Toronto Star for a couple of years and started to like the (newspaper) business. I particularly liked the weeklies.” When his father told him that the Tribune was being sold, Black asked if he could buy it. “He just laughed and said, ‘Why do you think I told you?’” recalls Black fondly. The young Black family moved to Williams Lake “for a couple of years” but “fell in love with small town living” and stayed for a decade. While there Black learned the business at the grassroots level. “I learned a lot about the weekly newspaper business,” says Black. “When somebody left, whether it was an editor or a compositor or a sales rep or a circulation manager or … I ended up doing the job until we found a replacement. I really helped me the rest of my career because I actually know what it take to do the job.” And from Williams Lake, Black began to expand his career and business. In 1980 he purchased the Ashcroft Journal (now the Ashcroft Cache Creek Journal). Today David Black lives in Victoria and Black Press includes more than 190 publications, in B.C., the Prairies, Washington State and a daily in both Hawaii and Akron, Ohio. So why has Black Press been so successful? “I understand business, I have a head for business. But the trick is people. If you can surround yourself with people who are really good, you will succeed,” explains Black. “We have really good staff.” And that is part of the reason why community newspapers aren’t as threatened by the internet, say Black. “We are putting out as good a local paper as we can afford editorially. It shows in the numerous awards we receive every year and our readership.” says Black. “I think weeklies will continue very much the same, I don’t see huge changes in towns the size of Port Alberni

Speed Watch slows traffic in hot spots CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Speeding by those speed reader boards may not net you an expensive traffic ticket but it will get you onto the cops’ radar, says the RCMP. The manned speed reader boards operated by Speed Watch volunteers are
meant to be a public service reminder for drivers to keep within the speed limit. A team of Speed Watch volunteers was out on Stamp Avenue on Tuesday, recording traffic speeds and numbers. Speed Watch volunteers, made up of local citizens, keep track of how
many vehicles have gone by and at what speed. The RCMP gets involved when drivers are clocked going more than 15 km/h over the speed limit. “We send out a follow-up letter advising them that their vehicle travelled by a Speed Watch at an excessive speed,” said Port Alberni
RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jen Allan. “The good news is our community is fairly good with compliance of the speed limit and we don’t see a lot of excessive speeding.” Speed Watch volunteers Louie Aumair and Bruce Chapman were set
up near the Best Western Barclay Hotel for a couple of hours Tuesday morning. Within the first 90 minutes, about 700 vehicles drove by, with 186 clocked going over the 50 km/h speed limit. None were recorded going over 65 km/h. “There hasn’t been

SPORTS Rhodes pinned again KATHY WHITE
Pitch n’ Putt
Slow and steady won the game for Gayle Rhodes during Alberni Golf Club ladies’ 18-hole competition last week. Kathy White faced Rhodes for the challenge pin, but Rhodes was too steady and kept the pin. Pat Nicklin will challenge Rhodes next week. Other 18-hole results included: 18 hole ladies Low gross went to Janice Cross for the second time in two weeks. Way to go, Janice. Low net went to Gayle Rhodes with a 72. In the ball sweep,
golfers were able to take their three worst holes off their score. Janice Cross won the gross and Rhodes won the net. The ladies also had their qualifying session for the CTC tournament this week. The first two teams to make it were: Janice Cross, Lowana Johnson and Gayle Rhodes for the first team and Carol Bouchard, Claudia Romainuk and Kathy White for the second team. There are two more teams that will probably get into the tournament, as Alberni is hosting it. Nine hole ladies A Division — Marta Williamson took low gross and low putts. B Division — Julie Swaney took low gross honours and
had the lowest putts, while Lorraine Wilson recorded the low net this week. Swaney also had a par on No. 13. At the interclub at Qualicum on May 15, Kathy Toms had the longest drive of the day. Marta Williamson had the low gross of the Alberni group. Marie Swain had the low putts and low net of the Alberni group. She also tied for the low putts overall. The Alberni Golf Club will be having a mixer night on Friday, May 24 at 6 p.m. Sign up in the pro shop. All are welcome to participate. Alberni Golf Club’s Ladies scramble is Tuesday, May 28. Signup is also at the pro shop for this event.

Strong start for Proteau GOLF: | Course record shattered at North Islands. SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
The golf season has barely begun and Christina Proteau has already notched a pair of significant wins. On Mother’s Day, she set a course record at Comox Golf Club in capturing the North Island ladies’ golf tournament title. She was one of nearly 70 golfers in the tourney. Proteau carded a 68, breaking the previous record by two strokes to win the Low Gross Mildred Laver Trophy. Proteau, Sally Dobler, Heather Swallow and Karen Kloske also won the Archie Dick team trophy for lowest net team. Earlier in May Proteau was a member of the British

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
