Henry Schoof named citizen of the year BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
In the 20 years that he has lived in Creston, Henry Schoof has quietly amassed an astonishing volunteer resume. For his long commitment to his community, Schoof was named the 2013 citizen of the year at the Creston Valley Blossom Festival opening ceremonies on Friday night. Born in 1940 in Rostock, Germany, Schoof earned a diploma in chemical engineering before emigrating to Canada in 1967, where he worked at a Prince Rupert pulp and paper mill. It was that northwestern city that he became a member of the Lions Club, in which he has remained active for 40 years. Schoof said on Monday that there was no tradition of volunteer service in Germany, but he was quickly drawn in by a friend in Prince Rupert. “My buddy was in the Lions Club and he said, ‘Why don’t you join, too?’ That’s how it all started.” He met his “first wife” as he jokingly calls her, Rosie, in Langley in 1979 and they were married in 1985. In 1993, they moved to Creston after purchasing the Downtowner Motor Inn, which they operated until 2007. Schoof has served as president of the Creston Lions Club on several occasions and, as a Lion, has been involved in Christmas tree sales, the Blossom Festival committee, the street fair, the children’s parade and in the operation and maintenance of the club’s mobile kitchen. A cook and cleanup specialist, it is a rare Lions Club event where Schoof isn’t working quietly behind the scenes.

majority win that few could have predicted. “It’s not what people were saying as I toured around the province,” Mungall said this morning. “I wonder, did people just not show up to vote, thinking the election of an NDP government was a foregone conclusion?” With 7,576 votes, she easily outdistanced rookie candidates Greg Garbula (4,348 votes) and Sjeng Derkx (3,133
votes), in an election that saw the Christy Clark-led Liberal Party wipe out expectations that a New Democrat government would be elected. “The polls always said the same thing, regardless of how the information was collected,” Mungall said. “It will take some time to process what happened.” See ELECTION, page 5

Ian Currie, chair of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 poppy campaign, presented a cheque for $660 to the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors last Tuesday. Accepting the donation was Rosalie Wilson, assistant program co-ordinator at TAPS. Currie said the 2012 poppy campaign was a successful one that provided for donations of $660 each to the air and army cadet groups, a contribution to the legion’s high school bursary fund, and sponsorship of a veterans’ dinner that will be held on June 6.

Town caps property tax exemptions at 1.75 per cent BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
mum. In 2012, 2.13 per cent of the total town property tax was waived.
After reviewing the procedure for granting permissive property tax exemptions, Creston town council voted on Tuesday to cap the total amount at 1.75 per cent of the local tax base. Non-profit organizations that own or lease property in Creston that is used for the benefit of the community can request to be exempted from paying property taxes, which fund most services provided by the town. Applications for exemptions will be considered every three years, and forms must be submitted by July 31 this year. “A permissive exemption is the equivalent of a donation to an organization by all property taxpayers,” said Mayor Ron Toyota on Friday. “Council must operate with the awareness that as more exemptions are granted, taxes are higher for everyone else.” Toyota proposed a 1.5 per cent cap on tax exemptions, but others at Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting spoke in favour of a two per cent or higher level. “We found a way to compromise,” he said. "The extreme options would have been to have no exemptions or to approve every application." To qualify for an exemption, an organization must be charitable or non-profit, an athletic or service club, a care facility or private hospital. Statutory exemptions are made for places of public worship, cemeteries, libraries, Indian land, seniors’ facilities and hospitals. Land and improvements exempted must benefit the community in one or more of the following ways: provide recreational facilities for public use, provide recreation programs to the public, provide programs and/or facilities for youth, seniors or other special needs groups, preserve heritage important to the community’s character, preserve an environmentally or ecologically significant area of the community, offer cultural or educational programs to the public that promote community spirit, cohesiveness and/or tolerance, and offer services to the public in formal partnership with the community. By capping exemptions at 1.75 per cent, council members could be forced to deny organizations that were previously exempt, or prorate taxes to keep the total under the maxi-
Council Briefs •Creston Valley Community Housing Society representatives Rita Scott and Heather More gave an update on a proposal to build eight units of low-cost family housing adjacent to Millennium Park. A site plan has been created and Scott said the application for financing through Columbia Basin Trust would be submitted by July, with a decision expected this summer. About $100,000 in cash and services will have to be raised locally, she said, and rents will be kept low to allow families with low incomes to enjoy a reasonable quality of life. •Rick Minichiello, from Gadicke Minichiello Carr, presented the annual audited financial statements, giving the 2012 numbers a clean bill of health. •The town will apply for funding from the Union of BC Municipalities to hold a Community to Community forum with the Lower Kootenay Band. •A request for the town to once again advertise in the Creston Valley Thunder Cats hockey program was approved. The cost will be $750. •Toyota and other councillors will participate in the 2013 Tim Hortons Camp Day on June 5 by serving coffee at the Highway 3 location. •In its annual review of remuneration for the mayor and councillors, council members voted to approve an increase of 1.4 per cent, based on the consumer price index for the year ending in October 2012. According to a survey of B.C. municipalities, Creston’s elected officials’ remunerations fall into the lower half of the scale for small cities and towns. •A new logo will be adopted from the new branding program approved earlier this year. •Creston will undertake an educational program, using signage and newsletters to discourage drivers from idling their vehicles for more than short periods of time. The town considered a bylaw to enforce the decision, but deemed it to be impractical to enforce at this time. A policy already in place to discourage idling of Town of Creston work vehicles will be reinforced, possibly with stickers being added to vehicles to serve as a reminder of the policy.
The Town of Creston recently hosted the 2013 Joint Chapter East/West Local Government Management Association (LGMA) Conference from April 10th to 12th. Over 40 delegates from around the region attended this Conference and experienced Creston’s hospitality. This fully sponsored event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local businesses and sponsors from around the community and the province.

Creston residents marching against Monsanto BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Concerned Creston residents will join two million protestors in 50 countries as they take to the streets to protest in a March Against Monsanto on Saturday. “It’s time to take back our food,” is the theme of a growing movement to take on the global corporation that was founded in 1901. Monsanto has a long history of innovation and also produced the insecticide DDT, PCBs and Agent Orange. Locally, Karolyn Whitford, a mother of four, is helping to spread the word about Saturday’s march along Canyon Street, which will start at 2 p.m. at the
Election From page 1 Disappointment aside, she said she is ready to return to work as the representative for Nelson-Creston. “I am so grateful for the voters for coming out and giving me another mandate,” she said. “I am committed to continue to work on their behalf.” She said she and her NDP caucus members would get back to tackling the Jumbo Glacier Resort issue, a development she said people in the Kootenays don’t want. “The Jumbo municipality is an antidemocratic creation and we are looking forward to pressing the government on an issue that is important to the people of this area,” she said. Mungall also expressed her dismay over the “seven months of attack ads that said some very nasty, horrible
Creston Valley Farmers’ Market site on Northwest Boulevard. “I got interested when I started learning about what I was feeding my children,” she said on Monday. “I was shocked about what I learned about GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and that Canada doesn’t require those products to be labelled. The fact that China requires labelling and we don’t is amazing.” Monsanto has been a world leader in the research and development of modifying plants through genetics, introducing genes from other species to create modified plants that are disease resistant and intended to be more productive. Some countries, including those in Europe, do not allow genetic modifica-
tions at all, while others require that food products from genetically modified plants be labeled to allow consumer choice in purchasing. Canada and the US are exceptions. “I was surprised at how many people I talked to didn’t know about GMOs and Monsanto,” Whitford said. “My generation is the one with small children — test subjects for the Monsanto generation.” A common belief among those who support genetically modified organisms, Whitford said, is that plant modification in the form of hybridization has been used for centuries. “But hybridization happens naturally, too,” she said. “GMOs include the transference of genes from one
things” about NDP Leader Adrian Dix. “We ran a very positive and fair campaign, and we followed all the rules,” she said. “I was hoping to hear of a more positive approach from the other parties, but I was disappointed. “But I am very proud of my team, and I want to thank volunteers of all stripes who care enough about our province to get out and get involved in the election process.” Only about 52 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in the 2013 election, only a single percentage point higher than the dismal 2009 turnout. The low turnout could have been influenced by polls that consistently indicated the NDP would defeat the Liberals after 12 years of majority rule, but Mungall said, “It certainly wasn’t the fault of Elections BC. They did so much to encourage people and make it easy for them to vote. They are to be congratulated for doing a great job.” Runner-up Greg Garbula, who was
taking his first run at public office, told the Nelson Star that he is concerned Nelson-Creston voters won’t be represented in the government. “I’m not bitter, but I really do feel sad for the communities and people that are really asking for help,” he said yesterday evening. “They have not been getting representation, they have not been getting emails or phone calls answered. Maybe she’s [Mungall] learned from that. Maybe she will come to the point where she will pay more attention to the people of this riding. Really it is about the MLA right now and her political aspirations versus what is best for the riding.” The Liberal Party won 50 ridings, with the NDP elected in 33. One Green Party member and one independent round out the 85-seat B.C. legislative assembly. Premier Christy Clark was defeated in her Vancouver-Point Grey riding and will have to convince a Liberal MLA to step down, then win a byelection before she can resume her role as premier.

species to another — that would never happen naturally.” Whitford’s hope is that the March Against Monsanto will pressure the Canadian government to require labeling of genetically modified products — there is currently legislation, Bill C-257, before Parliament that would make genetic modification labelling mandatory. “We have always trusted government but now it is not speaking for us, and Monsanto has an open door to the government of Canada,” she said. “It is important that we take back our voice. We are the government.” While other companies are involved in genetically modified organism production, Monsanto produces 90 per cent of the world’s genetically modified seed, a market domination that forces farmers to purchase modified seed annually. Seed saving is prohibited because the products are patented, and farmers around the globe have found themselves in court cases, fighting against a corporate giant with apparently endless resources to protect its interests. “It’s not like there aren’t alternatives to GMOs,” Whitford said. “In Europe they are available in every grocery store.” Among her concerns are suspected negative impacts on health, and she doesn’t want her children to be lab rats in a global experiment that could end in disaster. “Canadians need to show that we have a backbone.”

If we learn any lesson from last week’s election, and from the one in Alberta last year, it’s that pollsters can no longer be considered a reliable source of information. So it’s time for the media to stop treating poll results as news. They aren’t, any more than your drunk uncle who spends his afternoon in the pub talking about politics to anyone who will listen. I’m not as obsessed with politics at the provincial and national levels as I once was, but I’m still a curious guy. I heard the consistent and unwavering message about polls putting the NDP ahead — a day before the election I saw a chart detailing the results of the last 20 or so major polls. Every single one had the NDP in the lead, never by less than about five per cent. It’s unlikely that there is a single reason why polling has become an inaccurate reflection of the true intentions of the public, any more than there is only one reason why a pathetic 52 per cent of registered voters made the effort to cast their ballots. Maybe, like me, people are fed up in general with the bombardment of telephone calls wanting to know my opinions on any number of topics. Unlike many others, I have an easy out — I identify myself as a member of the news media and I am immediately disqualified, for reasons I am not entirely clear about. Not that I’m about to question them. So it is entirely possible that voters have just started to lie as a
way of fighting back. It is also possible that people who had stated their intention to vote NDP got cold feet as the reality of an actual NDP government became more
Ancient is the argument that people can be swayed by what they hear from opinion polls. Some like to jump on bandwagons and some can hardly wait to jump off. Some might not bother to vote because their party of choice is ahead and they don’t feel the need to make the effort. On the other end of the scale are those who hear their part is lagging behind and think their vote won’t make a difference. Mindful eating is a great teacher
Mindful eating brings many benefits that go beyond finding balance and satisfaction with our food. It relieves us of the fear of hunger. No longer will we say, “Well, I’m not really hungry,” and then eat a whole meal so we won’t be hungry “later”. Mindful eating teaches us to be willing to be empty. When we feel the sensations of emptiness, we usually move to quickly put an end to them by eating or drinking. When I ask people if they are OK with feeling empty, they usually answer, “No.” This unwillingness to be empty speaks to the first noble truth of Buddhism — dukkha. Life brings discomfort. We humans have a very low tolerance for discomfort and our culture has insured that we never have to experience the discomfort of hunger. Car manufacturers build snack trays into vehicles, food is packaged and preserved so we can take it with us wherever we go, water bottling industries have made a fortune ensuring that we never have to experience the emptiness of thirst. But if we look deeper, we are empty, whether we experience it or not. Every atom in our body is, in
essence, empty. We are empty of independent existence because we could not exist without all other beings. We are each soap bubbles in the midst of a huge mass of soap

bubbles. We are nothing other than the interactions that we have with others, and so are they. To be willing to be empty is to align ourselves with the eternal ebbing of the ocean, the waxing and waning of the moon, the steady beating of our hearts. Life depends on continuous change. Emptying the lungs is as important as filling them. If we allow ourselves to be empty, our digestive organs get a rest and our enjoyment of food increases. It’s a paradox. The more we eat the less we enjoy food. If we allow hunger to arise, and eat slowly and mindfully, our enjoyment increases. The same is true for an
empty and quiet mind. Lifechanging insights arise when our minds are empty of incessant thought. The equations of relativity flashed into Einstein’s mind while he idly watched a passing train. Mental health, creativity and true productivity depend upon resting and emptying the mind. So does our spiritual health. Our survival does not depend on being full. For the sake of your physical, mental and spiritual health, are you willing to be empty? Suggested practice: Before eating breakfast, sit quietly in an upright posture and bring awareness to your body. Are there places that the body feels empty? When you discover them, do you have an impulse to immediately fill that emptiness? Imagine your mind as a room in which thoughts accumulate like dry leaves, which the out breath blows away so the room returns to its natural state: empty and quiet. This is Kuya Minogue’s final column on mindful eating. Her next six articles will be about mindfulness, stress and chronic pain. She is the resident teacher at Creston’s ZenWords Zen Centre. Small crowd listens to great concert in park
To the Editor: On Saturday afternoon at Millennium Park an awesome concert took place. My particular favourite was the so very talented Peanut Butter and Jam, with their incredible Gaelic harmony and musicality. I must say, Slim Young was excellent, as well, and his songs brought back memories. The weather, though not hot, was pleasant and allowed the small — shall I say, intimate — gathering of privi-

leged spectators to enjoy a wonderful array of talented performers. I encourage everyone to come to the concert next year and participate in this outstanding event. Creston is endowed with a terrific array of talented people. This year’s “crowd” was lacking in numbers but if each attendee tells two friends, and so on and so on, next year the place will be PB and jam-packed! Sandy Buckmaster Creston
Proper watering good for garden
I once worked with a woman in a large greenhouse who said she was a PHD. Clearly Mary-Ann had not seen the inside of a university. Upon enquiry she related that she was a Part-time Hose Dragger. Every once in a while, I feel compelled to write a column on how to water. At face value it would seem to be the most mundane of tasks. However it really can make or break a “green” business. I watch professional types at other operations run into all kinds of problems due to their watering practices. Too much, too little, too often, wrong time or just not in time. Once the damage is done, it’s too late. For the average homeowner and parttime gardener, here are a few tips gleaned from 25 years of watering experience: •Water early in the day so leaves can dry as fast as possible. This will prevent fungal infections through a wet spring. •Use a hose end water breaker, a gentle sprinkler or even soaker hoses so as not to compact the soil. Plant roots need air and growth is maximized in a lighter soil. Splashing plants with a strong stream of water from an open hose end will compact the soil and may also spread bad bacteria around if they are present. Water thoroughly each time.
•Encourage deep rooting. Let the soil or other growing medium dry out between watering but water again before you see plants begin to wilt. Many plants’ leaves change colour when they are dry
Nursery Notes Evan Davies
but before they wilt. Learn to read your plants. Some plants come from tropical rain forests and will need more water while others like most Mediterranean culinary herbs are well adapted to drought conditions. Most B.C. native plants are also well adapted to a summer drought and make excellent landscape plants for the homeowner. •Don’t water in the evening if you can help it. The longer plants stay wet the greater the chance of disease getting a foothold. I try to have all the watering taken care of before we open at 9:30 each morning. On a really hot summer day we recheck the crops in the early
afternoon but that is only when the days are long enough so the sunlight will dry them quickly. If you are establishing a new tree or shrub in your yard, it may take a few years. Adding some peat moss or compost, which is high in organic matter, will help increase the amount of moisture available to your new plants when you water. If you have automatic irrigation, try setting a few coffee cups out around the yard so as to determine the actual coverage. Overwatering should not refer to the amount of water during a single irrigation cycle; rather, it is the frequency of application. Soak everything in well and then let them dry out. Plants that spend all of their time in wet soil conditions don't get enough air and root growth is suppressed. If you are growing plants in containers remember that the taller the container the better the drainage. Having one growing mix from the bottom of the container to the top will help with drainage. Rocks are only useful as weight in the bottom of a lightweight container. That’s all for now. Happy gardening! Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Brass quintet playing Nominee reading from novel at library wide range at Sasquatch ONE BOOK, ONE KOOTENAY
As friends gather, tensions mount as they prepare for a memorial marking a young woman’s tragic death, 10 years before. Through the characters of Evan, Siobhan, and Lance, a m u l t i - l a y e re d narrative of secrecy, betrayal, family conflict and romance emerges in Antonia Antonia Banyard Banyard’s first novel, Never Going Back (Thistledown Press, 2010). At 7 p.m. June 4, Banyard will be giving a presentation at the Creston and District Public Library. Everyone is welcome to attend this free celebration of the fifth annual One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK) shortlist tour. Never Going Back is one of three books written by Kootenay authors that have been shortlisted for this year’s OBOK. Banyard emigrated from Zambia to Canada as a young child and grew up in Nelson, where she currently resides. At the library, she will be discussing Never Going Back, revealing a few interesting snippets behind the novel, and encouraging people to take part in
OBOK. She will also be joined by co-shortlist authors via video, both with great stories to tell. The Dolphin’s Tooth (McLelland & Stewart, 2005) follows Kimberley author Bruce Kirkby through 15 years of high adventure in some of the world’s edgier places. Kirkby is a Globe and Mail columnist and photographer. Deryn Collier’s novel, Confined Space (Touchstone, 2012), introduces small-town coroner Bern Fortin as he investigates a murder in a brewery. Author Deryn Collier worked for a time at Columbia Brewery in Creston before settling in Nelson. The Kootenay Library Federation encourages Kootenay booklovers to read all three shortlisted books, and vote for their favorite title. Voting is taking place at all KootenayBoundary libraries through Aug. 2. Copies of the three shortlisted books are available at local libraries. One Book, One Kootenay is a regionwide book club supported by public libraries in the East and West Kootenay, and the Columbia Basin Trust. To find information about the books and interviews with the authors, as well as upcoming OBOK events at a nearby library, visit www.obok.ca. For more information on Antonia Banyard’s visit, call the Creston library at 250-428-4141.
KOOTENAY BRASS QUINTET
What kind of music can you make with five bells and a whole lot of hot air? Just about any kind! The Kootenay Brass Quintet is thrilled to bring a fun, eclectic program to the Snoring Sasquatch on June 2, a musical travelogue spanning several continents and centuries. The Kootenay Brass Quintet features trumpeters Laurel Ralston and Tim Bullen, hornist Arnie Satanove, trombonist Keith Todd and tubist Robin Clegg. All five musicians are current members of the Symphony of the Kootenays, but in their respective careers they have performed in a wide range of musical settings — funk, rock, folk and jazz bands, musical theatre, orchestral and chamber music — bringing a wealth of experience to the group. “For a few years now, we’ve chatted casually at symphony rehearsals about how nice it would be to play together as a quintet,” said Ralston. “This summer we finally made it happen, and we’re having a blast. There’s a ton of great music out there for brass quintet, and it’s great fun to work on with such a talented group.” Todd, whose first inspiration to take up the trombone was a Canadian Brass concert, is enjoying the opportunity to play in a high-calibre brass quintet again. “It stretches me in so many ways musically,” he said. “Moving together without a conductor forces you to be completely prepared and open to where the music takes you in a given moment.” The Kootenay Brass Quintet’s upcoming performance will showcase the group’s skill and artistry with great selections written espe-

cially for brass quintet, like renowned Canadian composer Howard Cable’s ever popular A Newfoundland Sketch and 17th-century antiphonal pieces by Paul Peuerl, and excellent arrangements of hit Broadway tunes, folk songs, military band standards — even a little Led Zeppelin. “One of the best things about brass instruments is their versatility,” said Clegg. “They can be loud and flashy or soft and lyrical, sound regal and dignified or raucous and jazzy. Brass instruments have been used for centuries all over the world in art music and folk music. We want to give our audience a taste of what these instruments can do.” The Kootenay Brass Quintet will appear \at the Snoring Sasquatch at 7:30 p.m. June 2. Tickets are $12 in advance at Kingfisher Quality Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door. For more information, visit www. snoringsasquatch.com.

Crawford Bay a perfect location for wood carver Merv Robertson BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
“You’re a wood carver? We need a wood carver!” That was the reaction Merv Robertson received from an artisan the first time he visited Crawford Bay. Five years later, he has a workshop and gallery in the East Shore hamlet, and couldn’t be happier. He’s carved elsewhere — central Alberta, the Yukon, the B.C. Coast — but, as artisans and visitors alike already know, the artistic vibe in the area was just what he needed. “This is the best location I’ve ever been in for what I do,” he said. “It’s my dream come true.” The rural location was also a big draw, as carving can be a noisy process. “Neighbours aren’t really conducive to carving,” his wife, Donna, said with a laugh. The work of over a dozen other artists — including Donna, who sketches portraits and carves magic wands — is also displayed in the gallery, including Creston wildlife photographer Brent Wellander and East Shore oil painter Garth Low. Each high-quality piece complements Robertson’s work well — his carving is smooth and flowing, rather than the rustic, squared look often expected from chainsaw carving. Of course, that’s not to say his work isn’t without charm — a selection of faces, including John Lennon’s, about six inches high lends a touch of whimsy. And they’re popular, too. “I can’t make enough,” he said. Robertson hasn’t always been a carver, but got his artistic start when his parents put him in painting lessons as a young teenager. “That’s the only training I ever had,” he said. His folks later bought him a set of chisels, but carving didn’t become a passion until he began building log houses. “I realized what a chainsaw could do, and away I went,” Robertson said. He learned on his own, preferring to be self-taught rather than taking lessons. “You’re not limited,” he said. “No one says, ‘Hey, you can’t do that.’ ” With no restrictions, Robertson quickly developed a strong passion for carving — a necessity for anyone attempting the time-consuming art.
“It’s just something you have to do,” he said. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t do it because it takes too long.” A photo of a favourite, which was bought by a U.S. customer, hangs proudly on the wall. Called Slipping through the Cracks, it was carved from a cracked piece of wood and depicts a man who appears to be climbing through the wall. When inspiration for Slipping first struck Robertson, he was home alone and the neighbour was out, so he had no one to share his excitement with. “I was laughing and crying at the same time,” said Robertson. “I was sitting on the lawn just shaking.” Inspiration doesn’t always strike so suddenly, though. Larger pieces develop as Robertson works, cutting knot and cracks from the wood. “It’s pretty good, and then, bam! There it is,” he said. One of his biggest pieces, MythConception, was carved from an 800-year-old piece of wood, and depicts Eve next to a tree picking fruit. But not just any fruit — a leaf hanging over the apple looked like North America, so after a bit of additional carving, Eve is now picking Earth. That carving is about Brian Lawrence seven feet high, and is an Carver Merv Robertson with MythConception. eye-catching, integral part of the gallery, so much so that its price is set at $225,000. It may take time to sell, but if it does? “I’ll have time and space to make another one,” said Roberston. And if he stumbles across the right piece of wood, that just might happen, anyway. “When I’m in a place along the lakeshore, I’m looking for ‘that’ piece of wood always,” he said. Once he’s finished with the piece, it could end up pretty much anywhere — Robertson’s art can be found, among other places, in South Africa and Holland. And having a customer enjoy it makes all the hard work worth it. “I’m doing what I love to do,” Robertson said. “You get in the zone and time just goes.”

Hunger and malnutrition undermine all other humanitarian and development goals. According to the World Food Program every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5% to 10% in lifetime earnings. The cost of undernutrition to national economic development is estimated at $20 to $30 billion per year.

SHARING CULTURE —
Dancers from a halfdozen provinces and states descended on Lower Kootenay on the weekend for the 22nd annual Yaqan Nukiy Powwow. Dozens of children and elders, men and women, participated in competitions on Saturday and Sunday, displaying colourful and complex garments symbolic of their tribes’ culture and history. The event is a popular part of the Creston Valley Blossom Festival and it draws spectactors who are welcomed to be part of this First Nations tradition of gathering, dancing, drumming and celebrating.

Therapeutic Riding Program celebrates grand reopening after upgrades BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
After nearly $40,000 in renovations and upgrades, as well as the purchase of a new horse, the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program celebrated its grand reopening on Saturday afternoon. Funding came from a variety of sources — Kootenay Employment Services (KES), the CrestonKootenay Foundation (CKF) and Columbia Basin Trust locally (CBT) — including $25,000 from the Kraft Celebration Tour, which the program won last year. A large portion of the Kraft money was matched with $7,500 from the Tire Stewardship went toward new flooring in the tack area, a soft surface that covered the rutted dirt floor that made it difficult for program members to get around.
“I don’t know how we lived without it,” said program director Michelle Whiteaway, wearing an official TRP vest paid for by a CKF grant. “We always had to be on alert.” New posts with concrete footing were also installed in that area, replacing the structure built by Alex Nilsson and Terje Munkerud five years ago. The KES Experience Works program paid for that, a new hayshed and four shelters, and upgrades to a mounting platform, which the program intends to extend into the arena when funding becomes available. “Then someone in a wheelchair could go under their own power right up to their own horse,” said Whiteaway. CBT funding helped add alley fencing to allow visitors to meet the horses. “Now people can get up close and personal with the horses,” Whiteaway said.
