- Chris Szydlowski, Western Canadian Distributor for Segways, spent last Wednesday afternoon training four Sylvan Lake RCMP officers in the operation of the two wheeled noiseless vehicles. Participating in the course were constables Mike Lee, Nelson Johnson, Carla Norum and Kat Robertson. During the three to four hours of training they learned about the Segways then when for a ride through town, using the natural terrain to practise different techniques and become confident with their abilities. The local detachment has two Segways and about 12 officers are trained in their use, according to Cpl. James Allemekinders. STEVE DILLS

Sylvan firefighters assisted in townsite during Nordegg wildfire by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Firefighters battling to contain a wildfire that threatened Nordegg over the past two weeks, were assisted by several Sylvan Lake volunteers. Fire Chief Cliff Brausen said an engine and crew of four firefighters went to Nordegg on Sunday, May 12th and returned late that evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Scanland spent the night of May 13th-14th in Nordegg, then two more people went out last Thursday returning Friday morning and two people went out Friday morning returning later in the afternoon. “Basically they did suppression standby in the townsite,” Brausen said. “Setting up sprinklers and cooling down buildings. They weren’t involved in any of the forest

fire fighting.” A mandatory evacuation order was issued for the Nordegg area at 5:44 p.m. on May 12. It was lifted at 10 a.m. last Friday but as of Tuesday morning, a two hour evacuation notice remained in effect. “This means residents should still be prepared to evacuate again — if given notice,” stated Clearwater County’s website. “The state of local emergency has been extended for town site, north

subdivision and mine site. Roads and trails around the mine site remain closed. Signs are posted at restricted areas. Firefighters will continue to work in these area to extinguish hot spots. The Forestry Trunk Road remains closed from Highway 11 to south of the North Saskatchewan River bridge.” The out-of-control wildfire, which started May 5, forced residents of Nordegg and surrounding areas to

evacuate to Rocky Mountain House on May 12. It was 500 metres from the Historic Mine Site and 1.5 kilometres from Nordegg, according to a story in the Rocky Mountain House Mountaineer. 107 people were evacuated and over 79 evacuees registered at the Rocky Curling Rink where they were greeted by Red Cross volunteers. Over 100 firefighters were on scene accompanied by var-

A developer has accepted responsibility for trees being cut during clearing operations for the Vista In Ryders Ridge subdivision immediately south of Ryders Ridge. At their meeting May 13, Sylvan Lake councillors received a report for information about the incident. The town’s recreation, parks and culture department staff met with the developer “and they are fully accepting of the responsibility for the removal of all trees identified as being unnecessarily removed,” according to a report by Ron Lebsack, director of leisure and protective services. A certified arborist was contracted and put the value of the 14 trees cut down at the extreme east end of the old rail line pathway just before Highway 20 at $25,392.50.

That’s the average of figures arrived at by using two different methods of calculation. Town staff will be working with the developer to recover compensation for the trees,

Harper’s accountability at heart of Senate scandal Disgraced Conservative senators Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin are giving old, fat journalists a bad name. The pair of former CTV talking heads has joined the growing list of senators who have been forced to the sidelines during an examination of their possible criminal behaviour. Duffy, Senator Patrick Brazeau (C) and Senator Mac Harb (L) were all audited for their housing claims; Wallin is being audited for a complex shoebox of receipts totalling $375,600 that combine housing and travel expenses. To make matters worse, in an unrelated matter, Brazeau has been charged with sexual assault. Duffy left the Conservative caucus last Thursday, claiming the issue had become a “significant distraction” to the government; Wallin “recused” herself from the caucus on Friday; and to take one for the team, the PM’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright, resigned Sunday after admitting he maybe shouldn’t have written a personal cheque to Duffy so he could repay more than $90,000 in housing expenses falsely claimed. The ethics commissioner will earn her pay this month. Duffy obfuscated the truth about his official residence; whether he should repay the $90,000; when he repaid it; where he got the money; whether it was a gift or a loan from “an old friend”; whether Wright actually is “an old friend”; and what favour was expected in return for this gift or bribe? The Senate has determined he was not eligible to claim the housing expenses to travel from his home in

PEI because, quite simply, Duffy doesn’t live in PEI. Hasn’t for decades. Perhaps the prime minister should have checked the Cavendish, PEI phone book to see if there was a listing for Duffy, Michael Dennis, before anointing him as a senator from PEI. Appointed to be telegenic shills for the Conservative party, celebrities Duffy and Wallin have also been called out by opposition MPs for billing taxpayers for the time they spent campaigning on behalf of Conservative candidates in the 2011 federal election. While that might not be listed in a senator’s official job description, that kind of double-dipping has been given a blind eye in Ottawa for decades. Sometimes it seems a party’s senators are appointed to be campaigners and cheerleaders rather than legislators. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has no one to blame but himself for this latest Senate scandal as he alone made the choice to appoint these hacks to the Red Chamber. Duffy and Wallin were once fine journalists but like many of their neighbours in the Senate, have never been elected to public office. The Senate is littered with the bodies of washed up Canadian hockey players, musicians, journalists and party bagmen who never put their name on a ballot. Harper is attempting piecemeal reform of the Senate and another scandal might just tip the scales of public opinion in favour of abolition. In his speech to caucus Tuesday morning, Harper endorsed fast-tracking changes to Senate expense

Urgent care, multiplex, securing water supply among Samson’s priorities by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Listing a series of priorities for her next term, and expressing pride at accomplishments during the past three years, Mayor Susan Samson officially announced her candidacy for the town’s top elected position, during an interview Tuesday. Among the unfinished items she considers priorities are securing an urgent care facility for Sylvan Lake and area; completing the downtown multiplex redevelopment to replace the aging arena; spearheading for a healthy lake using a cumulative effects management strategy; securing funds and a source of water for the town’s future growth; and working with local businesses to develop and implement a tourism strategy. Samson indicated her platform is to identify and map out the strategic priorities over the next five years “to give all residents a sense of the direction of the Town of Sylvan Lake”; to be fiscally responsible when dealing with budgets, property taxes and debt; to be sustainable in our growth with responsible planning and consultation with residents; to maintain a healthy Sylvan Lake; to continue to attract, retain and expand businesses; to communicate effectively about the business of the municipality; and to provide amenities, programs, and facilities that make our town welcom-

ing, inclusive and a source of pride for all residents. “My style is leadership by example,” Samson said. “For the past six years, I have committed my time, energy, skill set and enthusiasm to serve the people of Sylvan Lake. I have found the office of mayor to be rewarding, educational and meaningful as I see the results of thoughtful, planned decisions unfolding for the greater Mayor Susan Samson good of our citizens.” “I do not shy away from tough topics, controversial decisions and always consider the community as a whole when making decisions,” she said. Getting out, meeting and talking with residents of Sylvan Lake has been one of her priorities. “People need to know the mayor as more than a figurehead sitting in an office making decisions that affect all residents. That’s why, she said she attends so many “functions, events and venues”. “The town does not work in isolation,” Samson

She said she’s learned the importance of relationships with surrounding communities and all levels of government as well as organizations like Alberta Urban Mun-icipalities Association and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. “I am a humbled and proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal that recognizes my contributions as mayor to my community,” she said, noting she was nominated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for the medal. “I have taken advantage of all learning opportunities and I encourage my council to do the same so that we might better serve our citizens.” Noting the pride she shares with her council in collective accomplishments during the last term she listed a number of items. • a new RCMP building with a full contingent of members creating a safe community; • building a new town hall, to meet the needs of our community that grew from 3,000 to 13,000 residents, at a time when the economy was depressed to get the biggest bang for our tax dollar; • land secured for a new fire hall with

construction starting this fall in order to continue providing firefighting services to protect our citizens and our infrastructure; • a new public works building and yard to meet the need for many years to come; • lakefront development that will continue to draw investors and visitors alike and contribute to the overall economic health of our community; • people continuing to establish roots in Sylvan Lake as a result of building a welcoming family-friendly community; • becoming a leader in green initiatives including diverting storm water from entering Sylvan Lake off Lakeshore Drive and water conservation initiatives to name just a few. • 1913-2013 Celebration of 100 years of progress; • a modest property tax increase of 1.9 per cent for 2013 combined with solid financial reserves to meet the growing needs of Sylvan Lake; and • a 10 year capital plan to guide the financial decision making priorities. The election will take place on October 21st. Two other candidates — Councillor Dale Plante and Matt Prete — have declared they’re seeking the mayor’s job.

Changing

- It was a beautiful day at Sylvan Lake as the summer dawned Monday. There’s sand on the beach and in the volleyball courts. Jess, Eric and some of their friends from Edmonton were hitting the ball around among themselves as others sat and enjoyed the view from the pier. Boaters were out paddling, rowing and motoring. Youngsters were scampering in the water and anglers were casting lines. Weather is warming and the season has begun.

During Sylvan Lake’s Centennial we’re attempting to quantify the generosity of our community with information and a running tally of donations to various groups and organizations. Four facing charges in relation to break and enter of residence Saturday, May 11th 10:27 p.m. – RCMP attended a motorcycle collision on Aspelund Road at Highway 20. A 60-year-old motorcyclist received a broken arm as a result of another vehicle cutting too close to his bike, possibly striking the motorcycle. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor; however, a 51-yearold Blackfalds woman is facing charges in relation to the incident.

Sunday, May 12th 10:03 a.m. – A complaint of a possible impaired driver resulted in RCMP attending 50th Street at 47th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. Dispatch advised that a vehicle was swerving and travelling at various speeds, ending up at the Sobey’s parking lot. A 61-year-old female was questioned and was found not to be impaired, but admitted to having physical difficulties

Ejected female died in roll over; Sylvan man uninjured by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

A 29-year-old Sylvan Lake man was uninjured after the vehicle he was riding in rolled at the Menaik overpass 12 kilometres north of Ponoka on the QEII highway. A female passenger died after being ejected. Initial investigation led police to believe the deceased 25-year-old female from Red Deer was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to a report from Ponoka RCMP Integrated Traffic Services. A southbound 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt occupied by three people left the road and rolled several times in the west ditch. The female driver, 26, from Red Deer was transported by ground ambulance to Ponoka General Hospital and later released. Both her and the male had been wearing seat belts. “Cause of the collision remains under investigation. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor,” stated the police report. The name of the deceased isn’t being

released to respect the wishes of the family. “RCMP are reminding all motorists and passengers the importance of wearing a properly adjusted seatbelt,” wrote Cpl. Jerry Court.

Some councillors favoured no increase; 1.5% tax rate hike approved by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

After much wrangling about if or how much taxes should increase, and a break for lunch, Lacombe County councillors settled on a hike of about 1.5 per cent, which was down significantly from the 2.75 per cent increase originally proposed for the municipal portion of the tax bill. The 1.5 per cent figure was what staff proposed in their discussion paper for councillors at the May 9 meeting. However some wanted the tax rate held. The reduction to 1.5 per cent was possible, said Tim Timmons, the county’s manager of corporate services, because of increased assessment values, mainly in the areas of machinery and equipment and pipelines/wells. If they’d stuck to the 2.75 per cent used to craft the interim budget in December, the county would have collected an additional $283,250 in property taxes. At their meeting two weeks prior, councillors had already

wrestled with a $2.7 million surplus from the 2012 year end. “How do we legitimize any tax increase?” asked Councillor Rod McDermand. County Commissioner Terry Hager cautioned councillors to “take a longer range look at it. In any given year we could probably not have any tax increase. See what’s going to happen over 5-810 years.” He also reminded councillors that the province has just said it won’t fund any more bridge work. “What we don’t want to do is nothing, nothing, nothing and then all of a sudden five per cent,” he said. “Even at 1.5 per cent we’re probably slightly below inflation. Services we’re providing are appropriate, residents generally appreciate the services they’re getting. Taxes are moderate to low.” Councillor Cliff Soper said, “I wasn’t opposed to the original interim budget. For the health of the county I think we have to stay with inflation. When you look at the surrounding areas, I think we’re doing very well.” He predict-

ed that without the increase a future council would have to face a substantial increase. “I don’t see, in the future, having to spend less money. We’re going to have to spend more money.” McDermand countered, “I wouldn’t be adverse to see zero, I don’t think it would be out of line, don’t think Lacombe County would suffer.” Councillor Keith Stephenson agreed with Soper and made the motion to go with 1.5 per cent as the tax rate increase. “With the upcoming Nova expansion there’s no need for a tax increase,” said Councillor Brenda Knight. “We just announced a $2.7 million surplus. If we do increase at all it’s how can we get out to the public we went from 2.75 down to 1.5. Our public is still feeling Lacombe County’s pockets are full, deep, we don’t need to increase taxes.” Stephenson replied he’s had the opposite reaction. “People comment to me how well the county is being run. There’s lots of options to use this money.”

Lacombe Foundation are factored in, the increase in the total residential tax rate will be 1.35 per cent. Farmland rates will increase by 1.4 per cent while non-residential will see a 0.36 per cent increase and machinery and equipment will increase 1.45 per cent. Samples provided by Timmons indicated most residential properties will see a slight decrease in the amount of money needed to pay this year’s bill. The sample for Kuusamo Krest showed a 3.5 per cent decrease (the assessment went down from $892,900 to $849,980) while a residence and detached garage in the rural Eckville area would see a decrease of 0.7 per cent in the total tax bill. He explained this is because there was a little bit of decrease in market value of residential properties all across the county. The bill for vacant farmland increased 1.4 per cent while for farm units the samples suggested a range between -0.6 per cent and +3.3 per cent. The tax bill for the sample in the Eckville area increased 2.1 per cent.

Councillor Paula Law agreed that one thing she hears is how well the county does in managing operations. “Nova is future money and I don’t like banking on future money,” she said. “The comment on bridges, we have bridges we have to deal with, we have to look now at what we’re going to do. The county always put money away for future projects. These are going to be big projects.” McDermand remarked, “$2.7 million was rolled into reserves. People say obviously you didn’t need that money.” However Reeve Ken Wigmore noted, “$2.7 million is nothing new to this council. Look at how reserves have grown in the past years. I have no objection to 1.5 per cent.” In the end councillors approved the county’s operating budget of just over $53.6 million and the capital budget of almost $20.7 million. Based on increases of 1.5 per cent to the municipal tax rates, when Alberta Education charges and the requisition collected for “Our passion is His presence, Our commitment is His will, Our pursuit is His way.”

More people relying on archives for historic information about Sylvan by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

More and more people are realizing the treasures of the community’s history that are available for research and viewing at Sylvan Lake & District Archives Society. As a result volunteers have been busier this year than in the past, both with their own projects and in assisting visitors. They’re also receiving more donations of pictures and other historic material. Denise Bignold, president of the society, thanked the board and volunteers during the annual meeting Apr. 30. “I could hardly believe it when I read through the logs. Every Tuesday and Thursday we had at least four people working here … Everybody is putting in lots of hours.” The organization was able to hire Marion Thompson on a part time basis in January to assist with digitizing and cataloguing accessions. “We have a lot of visitors coming in doing research,” said Bignold who noted some of those were working on history boards which are now displayed at various locations around town. In her written report, Bignold noted two of the three Centennial projects they undertook have been completed. The 18-month calendar went on sale last June and the Main Street album is now available for viewing. The third project is the Centennial Album. Jean Bridge in her written report, indicated the album turned into a “major undertaking, not a simple book of pictures like The First Fifty Years, our album made in 1995-96.” The album has been divided into decades, beginning with the 1950s and has been completed to the 1980s, Bridge reported. The 1990s decade is partially done as is the last section, 2000 to 2013. “For the information and pictures in the album, we used pictures from our accessions and information from many sources, relying heavily on back issues of the newspapers, especially the Sylvan Lake News, to verify the dates and other information,” wrote Bridge. “Since the 2000s do not strike people as ‘historical’, we have very few pictures for this era, so are using a different format and featuring the tremendous growth which Sylvan Lake has had during the past few years. She indicated that about 90 per cent of the pictures for the 64 plaques going on the pillars have come from the archives. Michael Dawe has been writing information to go with them. Lions donated towards purchase of eAudiobooks by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Lions clubs in Spruce View, Sylvan Lake, Alix, Cremona and Rocky Mountain House contributed $3,680 for purchase of eAudiobooks by Parkland Regional Library. As a result, 95 new titles have been added to the collection that is available to library patrons across the region, including through Sylvan Lake Municipal Library. As the Lions Clubs are ardent supporters of providing services to aid the visually impaired, they

answered the call for donations in a big way, according to Meredith Bratland, the library’s comunications coordinator. The new eAudiobooks compliment the shared collection of large print and audio books, which are valuable resources for the visually impaired and print disabled. In their electronic format, they can be listened to on a variety of devices from personal computers to smartphones. “There is high demand for eAudiobooks in our region, indicated Bratland in a news release. “Sadly, near the end of 2011, the collection

became extremely limited due to the subscription being withdrawn by the publisher and our own regional collection dropped from 2,000 titles down to 50. With the Lions Clubs’ donations, Parkland Regional Library is one step closer to our goal of expanding the collection back to its former glory. Currently, we have 1,250 titles.” She added, demand for eAudiobooks keeps growing. “Last year alone, 5,077 titles were accessed by patrons.” An eAudiobook costs an average of $38 per title.

Blooming - Summer’s heating rays spurred people to think about sprucing up gardens, prompting lots of people to visit the Mother’s Day Flower Sale and Tea at St. Mary’s & St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, May 11. The event started at 9 a.m., something that Garnet Rambaut attributed to the early burst of sales with about half the plants and hanging baskets sold by noon. There were a few still left Sunday but the selection was greatly diminished. Cinnamon buns and Strawberry shortcake tantalized the taste buds for those who stopped for coffee, tea or juice. Red Deer County councillors passed final reading of a bylaw setting property tax rates, Apr. 23. Councillors gave first reading to the bylaw at their Apr. 9 meeting, and gave final approval after receiving no public input. “I think we’ve got a very aggressive program again this year, and yet we’ve been able to keep taxes within a very small increase, said Councillor David Hoar. “Congratulations to staff, we really appreciate what you’ve done. The base municipal tax rate for farmland is 7.5647, 2.6352 for residential, and 9.7312 for nonresidential. Tax rates were approved at 0.4 for both protective and community services, and at 0.159 for environmental services. A $25 minimum tax levy was included in the bylaw. “This tax rate bylaw allows us to accomplish some very important infrastructure projects, while not passing on a large increase to ratepayers, said CAO Curtis Herzberg in an Apr. 9 media release. “Red Deer County continues to be in a very strong financial position relative to other municipalities. Tax notices will be mailed out on May 3, with payments due on June 30.

Another tourism workshop planned to develop goals and priorities for town by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Lively interaction was one of the highlights of a workshop to develop a tourism strategy for the town, May 10. The first meeting brought together 20 “engaged citizens, business owners, members of council and staff ” who reviewed findings of a local environmen-

tal scan and key issues identified during individual interviews with consultants. Participants were asked to identify the community’s strengths, weakenesses, threats and opportunities in the tourism sector. Five strategic priorities were identified including tourism product development, tourism marketing, accessibility, communications and supportive policy environment, according to a media

Conservation Partners program aims to connect landowners with donors by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News

A conservation program recently introduced by Red Deer County is aiming to bring landowners and donors together. Conservation Partners was launched by the county last month, and allows landowners carrying out conservation work to receive funding up to $5,000 for projects benefitting environmentally significant areas. People, organizations and businesses may become a partner in the program by donating to one of the program’s three areas: water quality conservation, fish and wildlife habitat preservation and tree planting. Donors may also choose to make a general contribution. Example projects include riparian area fencing, improving septic systems, planting native trees and off-stream livestock watering. Red Deer County conservation coordinator Ken Lewis said the program aims to “care, connect and conserve”, by creating a partnership between landowners and people who support their conservation efforts. “One of the hopes that we have with the program is that by bringing the two parties together, we can start to build relationships between landowners and those who want to support them,” he said.

Lewis said a number of landowners have expressed interest in taking part in the program, and several applications for funding have already been received. County Mayor Jim Wood and councillors Penny Archibald and Philip Massier were among the first to make private donations to the program. Conservation Partners replaces the county’s Off the Creek program, which similarly provided resources and funding for landowners’ conservation projects. Donations, however, were not part of that program. “We are targeting the program a bit more on the environmentally significant areas, so that’s a bit of a change as well,” said Lewis. With landowner consent, donors will be able to find out more about the projects they support. “We’re going to be sharing all kinds of information,” said Lewis. “If that producer is okay with donors knowing where the project is, we’ll share that with those donors.” Alternative Land Use Services is another program running in conjunction with Conservation Partners. It will provide landowners with annual payments for the ecological services and goods, such as wildlife habitat and clean water, that result from their projects. Landowners and potential donors interested in participating in Conservation Partners are asked to contact Lewis at 403-342-8653 or contact him at klewis@rdcounty.ca

release from Joanne Gaudet, the town’s communications coordinator. “All in all, May 10th was a productive day with often lively interaction around the realities of the tourism development,” said Vicki Kurz, the town’s economic development officer. “It was great to meet the business owners and operators who are passionate about this community and I look forward to more meaningful contributions from the community and businesses.” The second in a series of three tourism strategy development workshops is taking place Tuesday from noon to 5:30 p.m. at the Best Western Chateau Inn. The May 28th workshop will include a working

lunch session to confirm and refine outcomes from the previous workshop. The session will also highlight the local, regional, national and international context for economic development and tourism, as well as analyze the competitive situation for Sylvan Lake and areas within our control and outside of our control, stated the release. The workshop will result in drafting a strategic priorities or goals document for distribution and eventual adoption by council. If you’re interested in attending, contact Kurz by email at vkurz@sylvanlake.ca or call 403-887-1185 ext. 226.

Novice hockey players won chance to train like Oilers by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

A group of Sylvan Lake’s young athletes have won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train like the Edmonton Oilers. Sylvan Lake Novice Diversified Products Lakers hockey team was one of 14 minor hockey teams which won a two month contest sponsored by Ford of Canada. They will attend an exclusive event at Rexall Place on June 1. It includes the opportunity to work with professional trainers, coaches and nutritionists; a tour of Rexall Place (including inside the team locker room); and Oilers merchandise. Minor hockey teams entered on-line by submitting a short essay, featuring their community commitment and passion for the game, along with a team photo. Here’s the submission by the Lakers: “This group of players, coaches, parents and fans (family and friends) really gelled when they were brought together in October. Everyone involved with this team has donated countless hours of time to make our team and community better. “Our kids learned many valuable lessons this year about friendship, giving, and working co-operatively to achieve a common goal. “The Lakers were entered into four tournaments this year. One of these tournaments was in nearby Eckville. All eight teams entered were to bring food donations for

Smiles filled the dressing room when we were told we had donated the most even after a tough loss on the ice. “Parents donated time and a Christmas tree FULL of gift cards to the urgent care fundraiser held in December. The tree was a hit during the silent auction that was held. It alone raised $1,300 of funds for the cause. The urgent care facility is something Sylvan Lake desperately needs and our team is supporting it 100%. “The kids really love the game of hockey and are very proud citizens of Sylvan Lake. They would all love to win this contest and are grateful for the opportunity to enter it. GO OILERS GO!!! Dan Weik - assistant coach, Sylvan Lake Diversified Products Novice Lakers” The team includes coaches Jody Junk, Derek Weimer, Rob Shaw and Dan Weik and players Jakob Weimer, Shona Willoughby, Paige Goyan, Seth Rosentreter, Tayler Weller, Hayden Cairney, Talon Brigley, Annalisa Trieber, Jaxon Junk, Aydden Shaw, Wristyn Ottenbreit, Brennan Stene, Landyn Sigfusson, James Moorhouse and Avery Weik. To read about the other teams and their community involvement visit www.FordDrillsAndSkills.ca. “Many minor hockey players, and their parents who support them, are passionate about their favourite professional hockey teams,” said a news release about the award. “The Drills & Skills program takes Ford’s partnership with the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club ‘outside the bowl’ and into the community.”

The State of the Environment (SOE) Report outlines community perception, scientific data, current environmental legislation and environmental extention programs. “It is a compilation of information gathered from various sources and provides us with a baseline,” said Blayne West, the county’s environmental coordinator, in a media release. “It does not include management recommendations or future planning considerations,” she

emphasized. “This document is a snapshot in time; it represents only the data that is available at the time of writing.” The document examines the environment through a scientific and socio-economic planning structure. The scientific approach focuses on analyzing available data to identify and assess changes in the environment over time. The planning approach uses social norms to compare and rank alternative choices, to balance environmental, economic and social objectives and to initiate management options. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) “will be shaped by the data found in the SOE, the data gathered by the community and by balancing the social and economic needs of the community with that of the environment. The EMP will “help us to create a framework, with milestones, an end goal, and a built-in monitoring system to ensure we keep track of our progress and stay focused along the way.” The document is planned for release in the winter of 2014. Copies of the SOE may be downloaded from the county’s website or printed copies may be acquired by emailing bwest@lacombecounty. com or phoning Blayne West at 403-782-6601.

A unique outdoor activity has people from all around the province flocking to Central Alberta. Red Deer Airsoft Assault Teams (RAAT), is the club that organizes games and meetings for the sport, and is quickly gaining a reputation as being one of the province’s top hosts. “We’ve probably got one of the best fields in Alberta,” said RAAT president Daryn Blondheim. “The guys from Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie, as soon as we post a game, they’re the first ones to sign up.” RAAT includes members from all over Central Alberta, who take part in airsoft events at the club’s field in Red Deer County near Sylvan Lake. Team- and individualbased games similar to those played in paintball are held, and participants try to shoot each other with small plastic pellets using an airsoft gun. Unlike paintballs, which leave a mark on objects they hit, airsoft pellets leave no mark. For that reason, games are played using an honour system, in which players must admit to being shot. Blondheim said games are played at a quick pace, and can last for a number of hours. Military simulation games can run up to ten hours in length, and often replicate the sights and sounds of a war zone. “Typically when you get into some of the bigger games like that, (organizers) start bringing in pyrotechnics,” said Blondheim. “A lot of guys are wearing actual military-grade equipment. It gets pretty immersive.” The projections of airsoft pellets create the potential for bodily harm, and so it is mandatory for players to wear appropriate safety gear, including protective eyewear. Blondheim has been involved with RAAT for five years, and has seen the sport grow steadily during that time. “I remember when we first started, having six or eight guys out to play, that was pretty cool,” he said, adding that weekly games now attract anywhere between 15 and 25 people. “The sport is growing by leaps and bounds. People are buying all the

toys and they’re looking for a place to play. That’s where we come in.” As a private club, RAAT does not freely recruit members. Instead, potential members must first compete in several RAAT-organized games, in what Blondheim refers to as an “evaluation process”. Airsoft players are welcome to participate in RAAT games, however, and may do so by joining the club’s online forum at raat.hyperboards.com. There, they will find infor-

mation pertaining to coming games, the club field’s location, equipment requirements and necessary player prerequisites. New members are asked to post their name and a short introduction outlining their airsoft background and how they learned about the club. Since the club’s field is situated on private property, its location cannot be publicly disclosed. “We welcome anybody and everybody,” said Blondheim. “This time of year, there’s a lot of new

faces and people that we don’t know yet.” A new initiative for RAAT is its youth program, which aims at teaching airsoft to children between the ages of 12 and 15. The primary purpose of the program is to educate children on how to safely use airsoft equipment, to ultimately lower their risk of injury while taking part in the sport. “With how real these guns look, it scares me to have kids running around school yards with this

stuff,” said Blondheim. “As a club, we figured we can’t control whether these kids are getting these things, so if they’re going to get them, we might as well step up to the plate and at least provide them with a safe place to do it where its structured and very supervised.” Newcomers to the sport will be guided around the club’s field by Blondheim, and introduced to the games played by the club. They’ll also be taught proper safe handling of an airsoft gun, as well as club and game rules. “When we’re out on the field, we really take the mindset that we all understand they’re toy guns and they don’t shoot real ammunition, they shoot little plastic pellets, but we treat them very much like they’re real,” said

Blondheim. Further information on the RAAT youth pro-

gram is also available by accessing the club’s online forum.

Baseball sponsors sought for next season by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News

There are plenty of ways to support minor baseball in Sylvan Lake, according to Sylvan Lake Minor Baseball Association vice president Shawn Van Nistelrooy. With another baseball season underway in Sylvan Lake, he is working to increase awareness of sponsor-

ship opportunities that the association offers. While some sponsors are already on board for this season, more are being sought for next season. “If we do have companies or individuals that were looking at sponsorship, I would love for them to get in touch with me and talk about what the sponsorship would give back to them,” said Van Nistelrooy.

“We do what we can to help the kids to get equipment. We need to make it so that they have the best stuff available to make them competitive.” As well as being used to purchase new equipment, sponsorships may be put toward jerseys, tournament fees, batting cage upgrades and general association operating costs. Full sponsorship could allow a

company to have its logo displayed on a team’s jerseys. Van Nistelrooy said enlisting sponsors’ support is often contingent on time of year. Many businesses have deadlines and budgets for their contributions to charitable organizations, and raising awareness of sponsorship opportunities early in the year is important, he said. For that reason, the association is

already seeking sponsors for next season. Games started earlier this month, and registration has ended. Van Nistelrooy said prospective players may still get in touch with the association to discuss filling any remaining open positions. Sylvan Lake Lakers, as the association’s teams are known, take part in Central Alberta Baseball League, and compete against teams from L acombe, Blackfalds, Rimbey and Ponoka, among other places. Teams are fielded in all age categories of minor baseball, and will play until the season ends in early July. Van Nistelrooy relocated to Sylvan Lake from Lethbridge last year, where he was active in minor baseball as a coach. Having experience working with agricultural organizations, he felt he would be able to help the association in Sylvan Lake as a board member. So far, he has been impressed by the town’s setup. “Lacrosse is up here, which is a big draw, but ball is still popular,” he said. “It’s a good summertime sport.” Van Nistelrooy praised the town’s ball diamonds, and said he feels Sylvan Lake offers the ideal environment for baseball. The people involved with the association also greatly enhance its programs for children, he said. “The coaches are great, from what I’ve seen so far. They’re doing the best they can do, and they’re working with these kids and getting them involved and learning the game. “They’re doing awesome.” For further information on Sylvan Lake Minor Baseball Association sponsorship opportunities, contact Shawn Van Nistelrooy at 403-850-7543. Information about Central Alberta Baseball League, including a schedule of games for Sylvan Lake teams, is available online at www. baseballalberta.com. Sylvan Lake Minor Baseball Association’s website is www.sylvanlakeminorball.ca, and has a master schedule of all games and practices taking place throughout the summer.

CLASSIFIEDS f

Nearly 75 Sylvan Lakers took part in the annual Woody’s Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km run on the weekend. The 15th annual running of the event saw record numbers and the weather held on for a near perfect day. The pre-race supper featured Kyle Shewfelt, Canada’s 2004 gold medalist in gymnastics from the Olympic games in Athens, Greece. His speech was absolutely brilliant and touched on the long and challenging journey to winning his medal. Through the talk, he tied in the goal setting, setbacks, challenges and victories to the common thread that runners face. With Boston on the minds of many, the race went smoothly with no issues and several signs and notes of respect during the day.

Medals this year featured gold and purple — in honour of the Boston Marathon. Several Lakers did very well in the full marathon, including Julian Price, who ran an amazing 3:03 full marathon, just 5 weeks after running a sub 3 hour race in the fateful Boston Marathon on April 15th. This was good enough for fourth place in a very competitive category. Alex Lambert ran a 3:33:24 which earned her second place in her division, and fourth place female overall. Lyn Beckwith from Eckville ran a 4:05:27 — winning her age group. In the Half Marathon Amy Komarniski ran down a fifth place finish with a 1:40:56, while Denis Leclerc placed fourth with his 1:32:18. The 10km run was very competitive with no Lakers cracking top positions. (apologies for any errors or omissions-sm)

Update on the latest from Sylvan’s lacrosse teams by Tim Harris Special to Sylvan Lake News

Minityke team and Tyke teams, - we don’t keep any scores or stats, but think we are undefeated so far this year for all three teams. Lots of fun, lots of up and comers, definitely some future stars in this group! Novice - This team is something to watch, currently 8 and 0, and sitting in first place in Central Alberta, coaches Trevor Sigfusson and Troy Tisdale along with assistants Jason Klumpenhower and Kelly Fonda are doing an amazing job with this group of kids, hoping to put together a run for provincials. Peewee - Quietly doing extremely well, this team is currently 7 and 2, and snuggled in second place in Central Alberta. Looking to finish the regular season in the top three, and hoping again to put a strong showing in at playoffs. Peewee’s finished third last year, thinking we can beat that if all things fall into place. Bantam - The 4 and 2 Bantams, currently in fifth (with three games in hand) are a contender this year, once the short games are made up, I anticipate you will see them sniffing around the top three in the league as well … looking to peak for playoffs … this team potentially could do some damage.

This weekend all of our teams from Tyke up will be playing in the Tradition Lives tournament in Red Deer, a tournament which hosts about 80 teams from all over Western Canada, and is a great tournament with a ton of history! Interesting note: Two of our players made Team Alberta Lacrosse! This is big news for us as we are such a small organization compared to the huge clubs in Edmonton and Calgary that have been consistently developing and producing top players for years. Erin Bryenton, a second year bantam, is now a returning Team Alberta Lacrosse player as she played on the Bantam Women’s Alberta team last year. Erin will be going to Halifax, NS on July 23-28 for Bantam Women’s Nationals. Callin Harris, a first year Peewee, is now a first year Team Alberta Peewee Men’s team member. Callin will be going to Whitby, ON on August 4-10 for the Peewee Men’s Nationals. Congratulations to these players, as well as all of the players, coaches and parents that are involved, the effort is showing as we have floored some great talent again this year! We’re still looking for teams to register for Sylvan Lake Rotary Club’s Golf Tournament on June 21, 2013 … some of the proceeds from this tournament will go directly to helping us become our own association next year!
