Cramped school woes prompt meeting

By Jennifer Lang North Cloverdale residents with toddlers or teens were invited to join a meeting Tuesday night between parents at Adams Road Elementary, City of Surrey and School District 36 officials to discuss the speed of residential development, lack of community resources and school overcrowding in their neighbourhood. The meeting was organized by the Adams Road Parent Advisory Council, with the help of city councillor Barinder Rasode, who was to be one of the speakers at the meeting, which took place after our press deadline.

Jean Lamontagne, general manager of planning and development for the city of Surrey, was also expected to attend. Organizers were also hoping to line up someone from the Surrey School District to the meeting, held in the Adams Road Elementary gym. “The speed of development in our area is out-pacing the speed of community resources, including community centres, pools, libraries and parks,” Adams Road PAC copresident Jennifer Cocks said, adding parents and members of the school community are concerned about the pace of development in their neighbourhood.

“The are 130 new homes going in,” she said. “All of the development permits are up and some of the ground is broken.” Adams Road Elementary opened in 2011 with 236 children but has already grown to 430 students, spilling out into six portables. With a projected enrollment of 500 students to squeeze in this fall, the school will require at least 10 portables. “Why are we pushing ahead with development when there’s physically no room for them at school?” Cocks wondered. Adams Road Elementary, located at 18228 68 Avenue, is in line for a school addition of eight new classrooms, but Cook

fears that will have to wait until the new Kaztie Elementary and a new high school are built in the Clayton neighbourhood. The Adams Road PAC wants the school district to install a permanent pod of portables, including extra washroom facilities and multipurpose classroom space. Tuesday’s meeting, she said, would be an opportunity for the school board and the city to answer questions, speak to concerns and let residents know what is planned. “We hope to get information on what the parents can do. We’re all willing to help out, and get involved, just tell us what we need to do. We don’t want to be confrontational.”

Cadieux tops the polls By Jennifer Lang Stephanie Cadieux has been elected by a wide margin in Surrey-Cloverdale, part of a B.C. Liberal tidal wave that upended any predictions of an NDP majority last week. “I think we surprised them!” Cadieux said on election night, reacting to results showing her party, the Liberals, have jumped to 50 seats, while the NDP dropped to 33, with one independent and one Green each winning a seat. Cadieux said she was surprised by the “tremendous and exciting win” by her party, saying she expected a skin-of-the teeth Liberal win with perhaps 44 seats. “We had the best slate of candidates and we had a leader that woudn’t quit,” Cadieux said. “I’m really thrilled.” Formerly MLA for SurreyPanorama, Cadieux claimed her new riding with 16,392 votes, or 60 per cent of the popular vote, putting her well ahead of challengers Harry Kooner of the NDP, with 8,120 votes (29 per cent), and Conservative Howard Wu with 1,922 votes (7.04 per cent). Not affiliated candidate Matt Begley was fourth with 862 votes, or 3.16 per cent. Veteran city councillor Marvin Hunt, running for the B.C. Liberals, won Cadieux’s former riding of Surrey-Panorama. Hunt buried New Democrat Amrik Mahil, hauling in 12,874 votes to Mahil’s 8,515. In Surrey-Fleetwood, Liberal and Langley City Mayor Peter

Students vote If students in Surrey-Cloverdale had their way, last week’s provincial election results here wouldn’t have turned out much differently. B.C. Liberal candidate Stephanie Cadieux – elected May 14 when she captured 60 per cent of the vote – also topped the polls in a mock election for students. But province-wide, the NDP would have a 54-seat majority, the Liberals 20 seats, the Greens 8, and three seats would go to independents if the more than 100,000 student votes cast in 85 ridings were the real thing. Students at 13 schools in SurreyCloverdale took part in the Student Vote Porgram, designed to teach young Canadians about the voting system. Cadieux won with 553 votes, or 41.42 per cent of the popular vote, just ahead of the NDP’s Harry Kooner with 520 votes (38.9 per cent). Howard Wu of the B.C. Conservative Party was in third place with 187 votes

Fassbender took in 8,201 votes to the NDP’s Jagrup Brar’s 7,936 votes. B.C. Conservative party leader Jim Cummins lost to Liberal incumbent Mary Polak in Langley, where he trailed both Polak and Andrew Mercer of the NDP. Langley RCMP Insp. Amrik Virk won the Surrey-Tynehead seat for the BC Liberals, with 8,425 votes to 6,925 for NDP candidate Avtar Bains. The NDP’s Harry Bains (Surrey-Newton), Sue Hammell (Surrey-Green Timbers), and Bruce Ralston (Surrey-Whalley) hung onto their seats. The final vote begins May 27. According to Carol Wyatt of

the District Elections B.C. office in Surrey-Cloverdale, the riding has more registered voters than any other district in the province, with 51,700 voters. That’s a 32 per cent increase, and reflects rapid residential growth, particularly in the neighbourhood of Clayton. In 2009, Liberal Kevin Falcon won Surrey-Cloverdale with 13,815 votes, or 62.7 per cent of the popular vote. NDP candidate Deborah Payment was next with 29 per cent of the vote, followed by Green Party candidate Kevin Purton with 7.5 per cent.

Revitalizing speedway ‘an obligation’ Classic car culture is massive beyond belief and growing. It brings people of all ages, income levels together To the editor; I grew up in the Lower Mainland and I too remember the A&W (actual) drive-ins. My father loved cars, so did his father. In fact, my grandfather was one of the first car mechanics in the city and he owned a shop on Kingsway and Joyce in Vancouver in the late 1920s. I grew up attending car shows and when I was older, I would go to Seattle Raceway to watch drag racing. My first car was a 1968 Camaro. The first car I drove when I got my license was my father’s 1970 Lincoln Mark III. The years went by and I moved to downtown Vancouver to make a name for myself in business. Sadly, while I always wanted to, I never attended a race at the Langley Speedway. I got married seven years ago and we had a baby right away followed shortly by another. Our choice was to find a place to raise our children where they could have a backyard to play in, neighbours to watch over us, a place where we could give our children a taste of nature, where we could buy our food from local farms and meat from butcher shops etc… That place is Langley and we absolutely love it. In 2010, we went to the Canada Day celebration at McLeod Park. My father-in-law was surprised that I wasn’t down at the car show at Langley Speedway – I had no idea there was one! So, we made our way down in one of our classic cars. As we walked around there were classic cars everywhere, music from the ‘60s, food, kids running around having a blast – and something you don’t often see in today’s world – smiles everywhere! I looked around imagining what it must have been like to have raced there or to have been lucky enough to ever watch a race there. That same summer I met a fellow who used to race there in the 1960s and he showed me some of his many photo albums of those days and he spoke of the fun, the sense of family and the exhilaration of it all. I thought to myself from that moment, it would be incredible to once

again see cars race at Langley Speedway! I also learned that in the early 1970s the Speedway oven hosted Nascar. Nascar, by the way, is second only to the NFL for TV viewing in North America and has over 75 million fans and is broadcast in 150 countries. My point to all of this is that the classic car culture is massive beyond belief and growing. It is something that allows people of all ages, abilities and income levels to participate in and brings people together like nothing else I can think of. The idea of a seasonal schedule of racing and car related events at the Langley Speedway is surely one of the best things that could happen in Langley. As was explained to me there will also be car shows, perhaps a summer music series, as well as the excitement of the racing itself. An important observation I have made in all aspects of life is that while everyone has a voice – very few ever use it. I have been guilty of that myself, and in fact had I not read the recent letters in the local newspapers I may not have used mine. I would imagine for every person living in the handful of incredible estates surrounding the Speedway who don’t want any noise for a couple of hours a week for a handful of weeks in the year, there are likely a thousand or more hard working people (like myself and my family) who would love the idea of experiencing yet another great facet of the car culture, and of Langley itself. This matter should never be about any one group versus any other group. I love horses and I look forward to riding with my wife and kids. The Langley Speedway exists and has done for over 40 years. Revitalizing it is simply a fantastic idea for the local economy and will create another very much needed positive family-based activity for many to take part in. Revitalizing the Langley Speedway should not be just an option, it’s an obligation. Dan Leece Langley www.CloverdaleReporter.com The Cloverdale Reporter is published every Thursday. Turkey’s Party Makers, left, took the coveted bed pan trophy at the 36th Annual Cloverdale Rodeo Bed Races. Surrey Parks, Recreation and Culture wore colourful outfits, including shoelaces, and far right, the tension rises before the first heats.

Turkey’s gobbles up fourth bed pan By Jennifer Lang It’s a four-peat for Turkey’s Party Makers. The speedy team raced to victory in the men’s division at the 36th Annual Cloverdale Rodeo Bed Races, cruising past rival The Vault Restaurant in an early heat in the men’s division, and securing a spot in the finals, where the neon green T-shirted team emerged victorious to secure the Bed Pan trophy. Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary’s girls’ soccer team ran away with the women’s division, claiming the coveted Chamber Pot. The Stone Pig Prize went to Options Community Services Society, competing in the media division. Best dressed went to the grassskirted, bejeweled spectacled Foxy

Fillies – a team made up of staff from Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus, which also fielded a team of students from the farrier program. A sizable crowd of all ages turned out for the May 16 event in sunny downtown Cloverdale, cheering on the teams and enjoying a demonstration by competitors in the Second Annual World Round-Up Freestyle Skateboard Competition, held May 17 to 20 at the Cloverdale Rodeo. Dozens of children took part in the Decorated Bike Contest prior to the bed races. Some won bikes courtesy of Kearney’s, and all riders took home a gift from Tricia’s Gems.

Metro split on re-opening historic Langley speedway

Artwork in progress

By Jeff Nagel The dream of motor sport racers to reopen the long-closed Langley Speedway in Campbell Valley Regional Park stayed alive Thursday on a narrow 7-6 vote of Metro Vancouver directors. Metro staff had recommended dropping the idea as an incompatible use of the park, but the environment and parks committee deferred a decision until at least June so Metro directors can tour the park ahead of a final vote. Several Metro directors think the proposal from the Langley Speedway Historical Society may be viable and deserves further consideration. But the committee is almost evenly split between supporters of the idea and those who think it’s an incompatible use with Campbell Valley’s status as a nature park, heavily frequented by solitude-seeking

walkers and horseback riders. “It looks sort of half and half right now, I’ll take whatever hope I can get and continue to work towards it,” said speedway society president Murray Jones, who tabled 1,100 letters of support. The historic speedway closed in 1984 but supporters think the oval could quickly be re-established as an operation that generates money for cash-strapped Metro while acting as multi-purpose venue for other events, including outdoor concerts. A staff report warned the sensitive ecology and various species at risk could be threatened by a restored speedway and cautioned Metro would have to spend several hundred thousand dollars on a feasibility assessment and public consultation. Equestrians strongly oppose the idea. “The Langley Speedway is like an invasive plant that keeps trying to re-establish itself in an unsuitable environment,” said park user Kathy Kolb. Campbell Valley Park Association chair Jude Grass said park-goers who hold their weddings and other special events there won’t want to hear the roar of race cars shatter the tranquility. Representatives of the Pacific Riding For Developing Abilities, which provides therapeutic horseback riding for clients with varying disabilities, said race noises could spook the horses and make riding unsafe. Surrey Coun. Barbara Steele was among the councillors who wanted to reject the proposal now, saying she doesn’t think a park tour will change her mind that racing is a bad fit there. Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal, the committee chair, opposes the idea and said advocates should look for land outside the regional park system. “Nothing about this is compatible with a nature park or compatible with the equine focus in that park.” Others noted racing would be limited to 14 days a year. Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman, who has a vote on Metro parks issues, said mufflers and other new technologies may address noise concerns. “Electric racing is just around corner and will eliminate the noise,” he said. “I really think they can co-exist together in this particular park,” added Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters. “It happened before. I think it can happen again.”

Family Resource Programs - build your parenting skills by Marianne Drew Pennington, Executive Director, BC Association of Family Resource Programs

As any new parent learns, it’s not easy being a mom or dad (or caregiving grandparent). It’s lonely, isolating and sometimes downright baffling. And it’s great to have someone to talk to and a place to go on days when it all feels a bit much. That simple premise is at the heart of more than 270 Family Resource Programs operating in B.C. Their work is centred on a grassroots concept developed in the 1970s that still thrives today. Wherever you live in B.C., chances are there’s a Family Re-

source Program (FRP) nearby (www.frpbc.ca/directory). Family Resource Programs are community-based programs designed to strengthen parenting skills, provide stimulating play environments for children and promote family and community engagement. FRPs are guided by provincial standards developed by The BC Association of Family Resource Programs (FRP-BC). These Standards assure the delivery of high-quality, comprehensive, accessible programs for families with young children. Most Family Resource Programs

are open five days per week for three to four hours per day. Early Childhood Educators facilitate play-based learning activities to support children’s learning and development. Family support staff provide resources and support to parents and other caregivers. The parent-child interactive drop-in program is the gateway which promotes engagement, while connecting parents/caregivers to a continuum of researchbased family development services that include: 1) family support,

2) play-based learning, 3) early learning and literacy, 4) parent education, and 5) information and referrals. There are over 270 Family Resource Programs located in family service organizations, community centres, Neighbourhood Houses, Friendship Centres, Military Family Centres and Boys and Girls Clubs across the province. For some families attending the daily parent/child Drop-In is what’s needed to connect with other families, learn about early childhood development and the

importance of children’s play. Other families, experiencing difficulties, may require individualized support such as counselling, mental health or legal services. Family Resource Programs provide wrap-around support to address the needs of all families. Families attend FRPs for a variety of personal and social reasons, but once there, they also connect to resources and other services in their communities. FRPs are central for newcomers raising young children. Parents who are struggling sud-

denly discover they’re getting help to work through their challenges. They learn better ways to parent.

With the growing concern at all levels about children in provincial care, FRPs go back to the basics providing families with the support they need to raise their children and keep the family together. They build on people’s strengths, acknowledging that virtually all parents want to be good parents. The family-resource approach positively impacts the ability of adults to parent their children.

Counselling: What is it? How can it help? by Nancy Orlikow, MA, RCC Senior Manager, Counselling Services Options Community Services

Sometimes life can be tricky and complicated and we don’t always have the immediate tools to cope with it all. These days, it’s not unusual to hear people say that they’re “stressed out” – it’s become a catchall response to many of the curve balls that life can sometimes toss our way. Stress can show up in all kinds of ways, it can affect our health, our sleep, our appetite, our sense of self-worth, and most often our relationships. It is not unusual for people to feel down and full of worry. Sometimes people, over a life time, can experience very challenging situations (such as traumas, divorce, financial hardships, accidents, etc.) and can feel overwhelmed and burdened by their experiences. Counselling is a way for people to sort through some of the things that have been having an impact on their ability to cope or move ahead – this is done with a counsel-

lor who is empathic, compassionate, caring, and non-judgmental. This counselling process enables us to create a vision for a better life. Counselling also helps people to figure out what tools they need to better cope with everything – and a place to practice and get affirmation for the progress that they’ve made. Sometimes people think that going to a counsellor is going to a “shrink”, perhaps thinking of movies they’ve seen where a person lays on a couch and the counsellor writes down everything that they say. They may think that a counsellor is going to decide what’s wrong with them and possibly think that they’re beyond help. They may feel shame and stigma about seeing a counsellor or reaching out for help. They may think that it’s a sign of weakness to see a counsellor, that there’s something wrong with them if we need to see a counsellor.

In our counselling program, our goal is to help people to help themselves. We consider the person an expert about themselves, and try to help them to better see their own strengths and ways that they may better help themselves. We’re here to help locate resources in the community if needed, provide feedback if needed, and generally to walk along this portion of your journey to help you to feel your own power – and strengths. Sometimes we all just need a “leg up”. In fact, we consider it a strength to know when to ask for some support and guidance – and we’ve helped hundreds of people over the years in our counselling programs. At Options, we have three counselling areas: Family Counselling; Suicide Prevention Counselling for children and youth; as well as Sexual Abuse Counselling for children, youth and their non-offending family members. The Family Counselling program requires an intake

screening done through MCFD intake (604-502-5385): The Family Counselling program is open to Surrey residents with children under 19. The screening intake via MCFD is a step towards getting into the program, and it’s free – the intake team will ask you a series of questions about you and your concerns and then send us a referral to the family counseling program. The Suicide Prevention program (SPEAC) is a free program for children and youth (19 and under) in Surrey and Langley – and is available via self-referral. Interested people should call: 604-584-5811 and ask for SPEAC intake. The SPEAC program also provides presentations and workshops by request to the community. The Sexual Abuse program is a free program for children and youth (19 and under) and their non-offending family members in Surrey and is available via self-referral. Please call: 604-5845811 and ask for SAC intake.

So... now you’re a parent but where did you go? —

by Paula Church, Community Counsellor - Support for Parents of Young Children

Something happens when you bring that baby home, and your once neat and orderly sanctuary you has become an unfamiliar land of burping cloths covering the sofas and a rattle covered floor which you need to navigate in order to not set off a series of events which ends with your hot coffee landing all over the pile of clean, unfolded laundry you were planning to get to two days ago. As most people will tell you: enjoy every moment! They grow

so fast! The first year is full of so much change in growth and development. Your precious newborn goes from a helpless, fragile and completely dependent baby to a walking, somewhat talking and in some cases very active pre-toddler in only 365 days! By the time they are three years old, your child has become their own person, with their own ideas and a new set of challenges for you as parents.

that putting everyone else’s needs ahead of their own is the right priority. And in some respects that is true. However, maintaining your own sense of self is not only important, it is essential for being able to meet the needs of others. You may be asking yourself, “How can I do that?” Depending on your own individual circumstances, you can find ways to build your own time and interests into your new life as a parent.

If you are feeling like you may be in need of rediscovering your own self—allow for the opportunity to think about what that means to you or what that could look like. The first step Be gentle on yourself. We don’t often think about what happens to us as people when we become parents. It’s a huge change! A happy change, but a big adjustment. It’s okay to feel like you miss doing the things you used to do. This does not mean you do not love your children. It just means you miss doing certain things you do not have time or money for now. Talk to the people in your life who are your supports. Whether a spouse, sister or friend. Let them know that you are interested in making some small adjustments to bring yourself some ME time. Maybe your spouse is feeling similarly, and balancing time could work out for both of you. The next step: Create a routine early as possible. Small steps such as making sure your young children get to bed early in the evening is essential in creating a time for you to have down time at night. This is sometimes overlooked, and by the

time you get the little ones to bed at night, you are ready to go too. Make a plan to prepare food, or housekeeping to allow for an hour or so a week that you can fit in a bit of ME time. Some new parents find that trying to balance home life, relationships and parenting can leave little time for anything else. It is possible with a bit of preplanning and a strong desire. Of course, we need to meet the needs of our children! That is not a question. What I am saying that with a little planning, sup-

port and self encouragement – it is possible to still enjoy being the person you were before children!

So, if any of this resonates with you….look for some support, make a plan – and hey….take up a program at a local rec center, pull out that scrap book you started before baby or start running as you have always dreamed! There is always something that can work for every family! –

There YOU

is no question ARE WORTH IT!

And you will be a much happier, healthier parent for it!

Cloverdale families Is there an app for that?

Choosing Child Care

Katherine MacIntyre Program Manager Options Family Resource Programs As a society, we have entered an era of being connected at all times. That means we answer the phone while walking down the street, receive a text at work, answer an email on the bus, post pictures on Pinterest while in the doctors office, or update our Facebook status in the grocery store. We get competitive about the apps we have and the games we play. Our obsession means we MUST “check in often.

The biggest impact on children are the important adults in their lives. Children have long modelled their play after the actions of their parents, grandparents and caregivers. This used to mean that they loved to sweep the floor, pretend to cook, pretend to fix or build things, etc. Now

But is “checking in” having an impact on our personal relationships, and how will affect todays children in 10 years? Technology has advanced so rapidly over the last 5 years, we have hardly taken a moment to reflect on the impact it’s having. Scientists are making all kinds of predictions on the development of our future generation and their inability to interact in person, deteriorating spelling thanks to texting and the potential impact of being so connected to technology. I can tell you that we are already starting to see detrimental effect appear at the Family Resource Programs. We have created a generation who are so attached to our mobile devices that often a text, status update, or app takes precedence over the children at our feet. We are seeing children misbehave to compete for attention with a phone.

even the youngest of children are instead turning to play with their favourite app. I worry technology is creating an environment where we exchange the ability to problem solve, explore, discover and create for the need to have our every desire, without thinking, ready at our finger tips......is this really improvement? We may be missing valuable “teachable moments” when we occupy children’s time with technology. So the next time you take a road trip, take the time

to talk about the road, rocks, trees, and play “I spy” - You will be surprised what you learn. When you head to the grocery store, have children help you create a grocery list, ask them to help you find the milk, talk about why you chose to buy the no name brand, or purchase in bulk (or not), discuss the saving you get from purchasing items on sale, explain to children the importance of saving for a special item or a night out. These are all real life learning opportunities, that happen naturally when children are involved, interacting, asking and answering questions with you. For a child, there is no app that can help them experience learning quite like nature provides. When you experience the the properties of mud first hand, by squishing it through your toes, you learn on so many levels. When you take the time to watch a seed you planted and cared for, grow into food is not only rewarding but a practical real life experience. A child will never dream of being an architect or builder, if they have not had the opportunity to experience what happens to a tower of blocks that was built on a shaky base. These are real life skills and knowledge that children can not experience in the same way on an app.

Learning to love math by Aida Aranda, Kumon Math & Reading Centre

Nurturing your children to develop an appreciation of math can be a challenge; however, encouraging them to think about numbers every day may come a bit easier. It’s also a great way to lay the foundation for a love of learning math. “Parents can incorporate problem solving math in the kitchen, in the car, while they’re grocery shopping,’’ said Lia Crawford, elementary mathematics supervisor for Hillsborough County Public Schools in Tampa, Florida. Give children confidence with the basics, she said, and they’ll fall in love with math — an attitude that serves as a building block for the rest of their education — and for much of life. When you pay your bills online, buy shoes, measure distance or check the time, you’re using math. Here are a

few useful tips to help get your children excited about math. Be an example Help your children improve their attitude toward math, by showing them that you are confident when completing routine tasks like counting money from a school fund-raiser, or completing your tax return. Read books that incorporate math More and more schools are starting to integrate diverse subject areas in the curriculum so students can make clearer connections between different subjects. One way is to have students read books in which the main characters solve a problem using math or logic. Examples include, One Hundred Hungry Ants by Ellinor J. Pinczes, The King’s Commissioners by Aileen Friedman and Socrates and the Three Little Pigs by Tuyosi Mori.

Use math every day Encourage your children to solve problems involving math outside of school. In the grocery store, ask your children to figure out the price of four cans of tuna fish. In the car, ask them how long it will take to travel to your destination based on your speed. Mental Spring Cleaning for Parents

Most parents think of spring cleaning as a chance to rid their homes from the clutter that has accumulated during the long winter months. But what about clearing out your mind this spring?

by Aida Aranda, Kumon Math & Reading Centre

focus more clearly and avoid overreacting. This is a simple technique, yet it is often overlooked.

Disconnect from the Techno-babble Every day for thirty minutes or more, turn off the TV, cell phone, radio, computer and video games. Although seemingly impossible, you will be amazed at how it can positively affect your frame of mind by giving you time to reflect and to put your day into perspective.

Kumon shares the following techniques to help busy parents who are constantly multi-tasking, prioritizing, and inevitably feeling a little stressed, to become more focused and productive:

Single-tasking Instead of Multi-tasking As parents we are often required to handle multiple tasks at a single time. But whenever possible, try the act of single-tasking by focusing solely on an individual goal. This can be challenging in the fast-paced world we live in, so start small – for example, packing your child’s lunch – then expand to other moments in your day when you are prone to jump from task to task. This can bring clarity, focus and a surprising sense of calm.

Worry Less This is much easier said than done. Worrying brings unneeded and often-times unwarranted stress that hinders the ability to perform at peak levels – it can cause headaches, muddle the mind and is an unproductive expenditure of energy. When you find yourself slipping into a “worry fit,” try to resist it.

De-cluttering your mind takes practice and isn’t easy. With all the stimuli, chaos and frenetic activity parents have to deal with every day, it can be a challenge to focus on what you need to be at your best. Over time, you can lessen your mind’s “chatter” and zero in on the more important things in life: being a more productive, focused mom or dad.

Breathe Deeply This is something you can do anytime, anywhere. Deep breathing reduces the heart rate and relaxes your body so that you can

Jack Mihaichuk, head chef at Rusty’s Pub, right, offers up the recipe for Triple Threat Chili, to the delight of a cook-off sampler. Last year’s winner Rusty’s had the longest lines this year too.

Hudon rustles chili title A cool, cloudy Friday afternoon turned into the perfect setting for the 16th annual Cloverdale Chili Cook-off, a culinary showdown featuring stiff competition and plenty of sampling by hungry hordes. Hundreds of free samples were offered to members of the public, who were also given ballots asking tasters to rate their first, second and third favourite chili recipes. First prize went to Kelly Hudon and team for her Backstretch Bonanza chili. Hot off the Press! chili by the Cloverdale Reporter came in second, with third place awarded to Rockin Ronnies’ chili by Marketplace IGA in Cloverdale. There were 12 entrants this year, down from last year, but included several new entrants such as Starbuck’s Cloverdale at BrickYard Station, which entered a coffee chili featuring real espresso, and Hamerin Hank’s Special Blend by The Henry Public House. Police probe attack By Kevin Diakiw Police are looking for a woman who attacked a protestor near the Cloverdale Rodeo grounds, as she uttered racial slurs, spat on her and allegedly pushed her down and kicked her. A woman who had been protesting the treatment of animals at the annual rodeo was confronted by a woman who apparently didn’t agree with her views. It then became apparent the woman didn’t like the colour of the woman’s skin, or the country where she originated. She filmed the attack, and posted it to Youtube.com. “I was protesting the Cloverdale Rodeo May 18/13 and this lady did not like my sign,” she wrote below her video. “She called me racist names, spat on my face, then grabbed me by my hair punched me and kicked me.”

Police are deeply concerned about what they see in the youtube video. “Concerning, not only the allegations of assault that took place after the video ends, but also the racial slurs this person was subjected to was just unacceptable,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet. He couldn’t say whether the attack would meet the threshold of a hate crime. “It’s definitely a contributing factor to the assault,” Paquet said. “It is something we are looking at in our investigation.” Paquet said otherwise it was fairly quiet at the rodeo, which saw only four arrests, one for assault, two for public intoxication and one for being out past a curfew. Police are asking anyone who can identify the attacker in the video to call them at 604-599-0502 or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Celtic spirit shines at ceilidh

Contributed by Jim McWilliams Tartan Pride’s “Celtic Night” held on Saturday, May 4 at the Cloverdale Catholic Parish Hall, was another fun-fuelled success. The annual event, also known as “The Ceilidh”, Gaelic for an informal musical party, has been staged by the local dance team and Joan Murray’s School of Highland Dance for the last 16 years, and continues to grow in popularity. Originally a fund-raiser to enable the local dancers to accept invitations to perform in such faraway places as Austria, Italy, Japan, Holland, Portugal, California, France, and of course, Scotland, the Celtic Night has since grown to become a combination concert, recital, and fun-night. This year’s production was enthusiastically received by some 250 spectators who danced, laughed, and cheered their evening away for over four hours. Performing guests included such international favourites as the Vancouver Police Pipe Band and

Blackthorn. The police pipers and drummers will be leaving for Switzerland in July for their second invitational performance at the Basel International Tattoo, now the second-largest Tattoo in the world. Blackthorn, on the other hand, is concentrating on bringing out more recordings of the group’s ever-expanding repertoire of Canadian and Celtic folk music. Of course, the prominent theme of the evening was Highland dancing. Starting with enthusiastic performances by the youngest members of the Joan Murray Dance School, the show-part of the evening was interspersed with traditional and specially choreographed numbers by the Tartan Pride Dance Team. True to Joan Murray’s reputation for innovative choreography, several unique numbers such as “Cotton-Eyed Joe” and “The Cake-Walk” kept the audience enthralled – torn between gasps of admiration and outbursts of laughter. As the old adage goes, “A great time was had by all.”
