owen Island had the highest ranking for the percentage of residents who feel a strong sense of community belonging, according to a recent North Shore Community Wellness Survey. The survey was conducted from November 23 to December 21 last year with the aim to support the North Shore Congress Child and Family Friendly Community Charter but Colleen O’Neil, coordinator of the Bowen Island’s Caring Circle Health Resource Centre, says that it doesn’t tell the whole story. O’Neil believes that a need assessment for Bowen Island has to include more community specific information. A new survey titled My Health My Community (MHMC) will be conducted by Vancouver Coastal Health in partnership with Fraser Health and the UBC Faculty of Medicine eHealth Strategy Office. O’Neil hopes that the survey can be a useful tool for the Caring Circle. “When the Caring Circle had its first meeting on Bowen, we determined that one of the first steps we needed to take was to do health needs assessment,” O’Neil said at the Monday, May 13, council meeting, adding that the health needs assessments that had been done in 2007 and 2009 were inadequate.

The Belterra video was not the first paying gig for the Bowen Island student, who has been acting since 2011. This week, Isobel’s performance made it into Canadian homes as she stars in two music videos that are part of a series titled

Will’s Jams that premiered on Kids CBC. It airs Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 8:25 a.m. One of the videos Isobel has a part in is called Hygiene and Eugene and she says it is well worth watching. “It’s about keeping yourself clean and washing your hands. It’s about being healthy but it’s also fun to watch.” she explained. After watching the Harry Potter movies, Isobel went online to research how films are made. The aspect that interested her the most was acting. Isobel hopes to sign up for drama or performing classes in the future but she

n Friday, May 31, the Bowen Island Pub will host an evening to raise funds for the 2013 Steamship Days. Ginger 66 will provide the entertainment and businesses have donated a number of fabulous auction items to benefit this year’s event. The Bowen Island Chamber of Commerce’s manager Maria Steernberg and one of the Chamber directors Theresa Anderson say that the funds will go toward promoting the event. “We are excited to have music by Ginger 66 and the first set starts at approximately 8 p.m. During band breaks, there will be two live auctions,” Anderson said. In addition to the live auction, there will be over 30 silent auction items on display. “Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and there are two silent auction blocks,” Steernberg said. “The first one closes at 9 and successful bids are announced at 9:15. Closing time for the second one is at 10, followed by the announcement at 10:15.” Steernberg added that for the silent auction, bidders don’t have to be present at the time of the announcement.

The auction items in support of Steamship Days are varied and include a two-night stay at the Terminal City Club, a night at the Granville Island Hotel (including dinner), a painting by Robert Wall, an electric barbeque from the Bowen Building Building Centre, a gift certificate for Leigh Motors, local pottery, chocolates, coffee, gift certificates and much more. Payments will be accepted by credit card and cash. “There will be a 50/50 draw,” Steernberg said. Michelle Harrison of Ginger 66 is also happy to be involved. “We are so lucky to live in a community where there is so much support,” she said, adding, “it’s also great to play music with friends on a Friday night.” Anderson commented, “Glenn Cormier of the Bowen Island Pub has been very generous to provide the venue and donate an auction item. In addition, a lot of work and effort is going into organizing this event by a number of other individuals”. “The money will be used to promote Steamship Days,” Anderson said. “We want to reach a wide audience and to bring visitors to the island for the event.”

O’Neil had planned on working on an update but has recently heard about the Vancouver Coastal Health initiative that plans to launch a web-based survey in late June of 2013. “In the pilot project, we got the highest marks for community belonging,” O’Neil said. “But there are other aspects [to health services]. Vancouver Coastal Health will rely on the information gathered from the survey for planning purposes. If they don’t get a response, they believe that we are fine.” O’Neil explained that Bowen Island is grouped with West Vancouver, a community with that is “well served” and that, in order to get a clear picture of the local condition, certain questions would need to be added to the survey. “We need to ask, ‘Can you get doctor? And if not, why can’t you get a doctor?’” she said, adding that she is prepared to lend a hand in order to get the required input. Vancouver Coastal Health has submitted a letter to council on April 30 to “welcome municipal partners to be part of the launch.” The letter also states, “This initiative will allow the collection of data on residents on an ongoing basis and this data will provide valuable information about the health of our community and allow for planners and others

to assess and respond to community needs.” Council was asked to lend assistance by promoting community awareness and participation, offering localised incentives as prizes for participating residents and by providing local community specific questions for inclusion in the MHMC questionnaire. O’Neil believes that people need to get motivated to fill out the survey and she wants to be part of the process. “[Vancouver Coastal Health] will likely send over a team to Bowen Island to help people who don’t have access to a computer,” she said. “I want to convince them to hire me and my team as we know the organizations to go to.” Councillor Alison Morse encouraged the involvement of the Caring Circle but added, “I would suggest that you take someone from North Shore Health with you [when you visit residents and organizations].” Mayor Jack Adelaar believes Bowen Island’s participation in the survey is crucial as he has seen evidence that little information about the need and availability of local health services situation is available for health authorities. Chief Administrative Officer Kathy Lalonde suggested for O’Neil to work with staff to come up with a plan to make the most of the new survey for Bowen Island.

But Isobel doesn’t see acting as a chore. “Working with Will [Stroet] has been a lot of fun,” she says. “He is so talented. And so are Kat and Cam [Hayduk].” When Isobel moved to Bowen in 2008, the Hayduks were some of the first islanders the family met. Kat and Cam Hayduk are the producers of Will’s Jams. They run Turtlebox Productions and have enlisted Isobel for many of their projects, including a teaser for the Banff Film Festival. “Whenever I work with Cam, it gets done in half the time. He said it would take Sunday and Monday and we did it all on Sunday,” says Isobel, who adds that this may be due to her gaining more experience in front of the camera. One of the highlights for Isobel was filming an episode of Will’s Jams that included Bobs and Lolo, two renowned children’s entertainers. “That was pretty good. We had cameras and lights and a whole production team,” says Isobel, who knows that Bobs and Lolo’s names are Robyn Hardy and Lorraine Pond. For herself, she doesn’t think that she will choose a stage name as Isobel White suits her just fine.

he Bowen Island Visitor Centre in Snug Cove has opened its doors for the summer season. The Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC) is again thrilled to be operating the visitor centre on behalf of the Bowen Island Municipality. The visitor centre is open seven days a week to welcome and assist residents and visitors alike. Drop by any time between 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and staff will be on hand to help you get where you want to go, find important information about local activities and events, and make sure you discover the best of Bowen. Kelsey Watson, who grew up on the island and has just finished her second year at University of British Columbia in the Okanagan will be your host during the week. On the weekends you’ll find Sandy Winton and Sue Hurn, two excellent ambassadors to Bowen who have spent many years at the Boulevard Cottage making sure people feel welcome.

The visitor centre is a great spot to pick up maps and guides to local trails and information about the island’s many amenities and cultural and recreational activities. Once again this year, the walls of the visitor centre showcase artwork by local artists. Also for sale are art wares including cards, calendars, posters, musical CD and other treasures. As one of the many activities planned in celebration of the arts council’s silver anniversary, BIAC will mount an art exhibit and slide show at the visitor centre. Opening early summer, it will present 25 years of arts and culture on Bowen through the lens of the nonprofit. The Bowen Chamber of Commerce is also sharing the Boulevard Cottage space as it plans and coordinates the 2013 Steamship Days from July 10 to 14. hildhood, adolescence and parenthood challenge us in many subtle and significant ways. Simple daily rituals that allow us to reflect and connect can help to navigate these challenges. In order to move from mere coping to thriving, strong evidence suggests that regular programming and practices that nurture mindfulness and social support are important tools. At home and school, it is the regular rituals that many do, and not the big events that involves a few, that make the most difference in creating climates in which children, along with their parents and teachers, thrive. Mindfulness - Helping children to Thrive was the title of an invigorating conference held this month at UBC by the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education in cooperation with the UBC department of Psychiatry and the Faculty of Education. A crowd of 550 educators, parents, mental health professionals, scholars and yoga teachers experienced the coming together of neuroscience, evidence-based practices and advice on how to be happy. The opening and closing plenary speakers, Goldie Hawn and Roy Henry Vickers, offered deeply moving reflections. The evidence is clear. Mindfulness can help children thrive physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally. Shawn Achor, New York Times best selling author of The Happiness Advantage, said that although individuals are born with a certain set point for happiness, it is certainly possible to influence this by using some tried and true techniques derived from ancient wisdom traditions and verified by modern scientific research. He makes a compelling case that our most commonly held formula for success is actually inaccurate. Success doesn’t bring happiness – instead, happiness brings success. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn’t just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience. Achor makes a number of simple recommendations, based on his work in positive psychology, that are meant to be easy to do, and to become doorways to an ongoing practice that can shift levels of body fitness and brain chemistry with positive results. Among these are to take two minutes each day to write down three things one is grateful for, without repeating. Research shows that repeated practices of this sort, done daily for 21 days, create positive inner shifts. Positive psychology, in a nutshell, is the scientific study of what makes

people thrive. Other findings show that connecting positively with someone each day makes a difference to you and everyone around you. In other words, practicing the virtues of gratitude and compassion makes a positive difference. Related to the virtues of gratitude, Paul Tough, author of How Children Succeed, shows how curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, self-control, and grit are better indicators of success than test scores. Is it possible to teach children these non-cognitive skills, when the teaching of the traditional three Rs – reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmatic – is challenging enough? The answer is a YES. The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) documents a significant number of programs and research studies that show that teaching and supporting a range of social and emotional skills increases children’s academic performance. Maureen Dockendorf, the superintendent of literacy for the province, says that children who are well-balanced socially and emotionally tend to have the confidence to learn to read more easily than those who do not. Scientific studies show that practicing mindfulness enhances students’ concentration, as well as their ability to make decisions and control impulses. Mindfulness helps children get ready to learn, and it can lead to physical and mental well-being. The evidence is clear and compelling. It is possible for both our minds and our hearts to thrive. Mindfulness education programs educate our minds and hearts. One such program is MindUp and teachers at the Bowen Island Community School (BICS) have been using it for a number of years. On Monday, May 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the Bowen Island community has the opportunity to learn more about this award winning program at an evening talk: Mindfulness Matters. The BICS School Planning Council and PAC are bringing Molly Stewart Lawlor, primary author of the MindUP curriculum, to Bowen Island. The event will be held at the BICS multipurpose room. Childcare is avilable and admission is by donation. The talk will focus on this program that helps young minds by nurturing resilience, hope and optimism and explores how parents can support social and emotional literacy skills at home. Attacking present council not helpful To the editor:

obody living on Bowen who is in the right mind likes the idea of four mega docks sticking out from one of Bowen’s most scenic coasts and spoiling the view towards the open water and the lighthouse. This could have been our chance for a public shoreline, the last accessible good size beach area and a 300 acre park to be enjoyed by us and future generations. Cape Roger Curtis had been a private 600 acre property for several generations and when it came up for sale, efforts by the CRC Preservation Society to raise funds to purchase the land fell far short. What happened next is for many islanders one of the most incomprehensible and shameful episodes in Bowen’s history: The developer who eventually purchased the CRC property was made aware of the attachment people have to this corner of Bowen. He engaged one of the most reputable planning firms in the area at his considerable expense and presented the municipality with a proposal where almost all the shoreline, along with 300 acres, was to be designated a public park, including additional civic facilities for the community. In return, the developer was asking for a change in zoning to allow for a higher density on the remaining land, to be implemented in stages. To me, the “public consultation process” that followed was a sham, with compromise solutions swept

under the table and a campaign of misinformation spread by a small group that promised us, that if we rejected the developer’s plan, the allowable subdivision into 58 10-acre lots could never happen. I believe the past council, citing a dubious petition signed by the “600 for Bowen,” cut off all further discussion, snubbing the developers and their efforts to accommodate islanders’ love and attachment to this land. This is not the first time in island history that a small group of naysayers have tried to stop any kind of change, progress or sensible planning on Bowen. Just look at our USSC marina, boardwalk and adjoining architecture. Would you really rather still have a swamp in its place? The golf course, which was built over the objections of the same few, has become a great asset to the island, both for locals and the visitors. But four years ago, the naysayers finally had their “victory”. They lost the park at the Cape and any adequate access to its shores. What’s astounding is that the same self-appointed guardians of all things natural are now wailing and protesting, blaming the present council for not doing enough to stop the docks, going so far as to call it “this council’s shameful legacy.” So, by all means, sign the Stop The Docks petition if it makes you feel better. A portly guy talks to the world

write online on a news site called Digital Journal and have clearance to write about anything. I write about whatever might get page views and ‘likes,’ which determine how much you earn. It reaches readers all over the world, and I’ve seen my stuff translated into many languages. I find it amusing that readers may think the writer is an official human of some sort. Say, a guy in Pittsburgh is reading my story on Mitt Romney trashing 47 percent of the American electorate, or a woman in Halifax is reading about Senator Mike Duffy, they may believe I’m working in an office and being studious. Nope, I’m a portly, bald man in my living-room with a cat trying to lie on the keyboard, a hockey game on the tube or some blues on the stereo, or both. While writing, I rant at my son for repeatedly throwing a basketball – a basketball! – against his bedroom wall. It goes like this - Hondro rants: “Jeez, could you stop chucking that stupid ball against your wall! Take it outside!” Simultaneously - Hondro writes: “Mr. Duffy made what appears to be false claims on his residency forms, claiming his primary residence was a small cottage in P.E.I., inaccessible in winter. There is no indication the former journalist”...etc. etc. You learn to find subjects that get views and likes. I write Justin Bieber stories, got 20,000 or so views on some and have written likely 200 on the guy. But he’s fallen off, the scandal stories don’t get as many views because his fan base has diminished and those still following him won’t click ‘like’ if a story has negative content. You can find ‘odd news’ in small-town papers and write ‘em up for the world masses, and some take off. I’ve written about a girls school in the U.K. being ‘terrorized’ by a giant badger, a civil war ring found 148 years later, pygmy goats riding horses in Newfoundland, a teen who had the hiccups for 10 weeks and a study on humans farting on airplanes. Marijuana stories can get page views, and comments. don’t speak up often, but I feel compelled to do so now. I have been reading some of the comments and criticisms around the recent controversy surrounding the Bowfest committee, and the tone of the discussion really saddens me. I think we need to keep in mind that volunteers are donating their ‘precious free time’ in service of our community.

They are doing work for us so that we don’t have to – and can instead just show up and enjoy some pretty terrific events, celebrations and fundraisers, and cherish the wonderful feeling of community and belonging that we enjoy so much here on Bowen Island. As an islander who has donated a large portion of my time towards volunteering, and a mom and harried working parent, I would hope to be appreciated for what I do, not maligned, personally attacked

and rudely chastised. If someone doesn’t agree with something I do, or any volunteer, does, fine. Just make your opinion heard in a kind, considerate manner. It’s HOW it’s said, not WHAT. The ‘not me’ council To the editor:

You (or they) would do something they’re not supposed to do, or they wouldn’t do what you asked them to do - you’d call them out on it, and the answer would be “Wasn’t my fault!” You would probably then ask, “Well, who is responsible?” and the answer would be: “Not me!” As you or your children grew older, they (hopefully) grew up, matured, and moved away from that phase. But seemingly that is not the case with many of the individuals that comprise the current council. Those particular excuses seem front and centre for most issues whenever council is questioned or challenged on what they are doing, including, but not exclusive to, the CRC docks, ferry marshalling, Snug Cove improvements - and many others. It got weird enough I stopped writing about Sarah Palin. Like Justin Bieber, she’s become old news anyhow. Writing on U.S. politics can be...scary. After Obama got all that loopy anger hurled at him when a marine held an umbrella over his head, I got the following comment on a story on how the right wing outrage was missing when both Bushes had marines hold umbrellas over their heads (which they did): “Your a lying f*c&stain who ever wrote this (sic).” Edifying, no? Sometimes your stories get stolen. When a marine exploration company went to the site of the Titanic to do some 3D mapping, someone onboard the expedition ship read a story of mine and contacted Digital Journal to say I could get information from him. From my livingroom, I started scooping on what was happening on the ship and had thousands of readers. By fluke, one day I discovered my exact stories on a Titanic site some guy in London runs, with his name on the byline of MY stories. Aahhh! Google stepped in and got him to take my stories down under threat of taking all his ads down. Wrote a piece on Wayne Rooney and his infidelity and the next morning an email from the BBC was in my inbox with an invitation to be on a radio program and talk about young sports stars, money and lifestyle. The time difference prevented it – the show was on when I got the email - but it would have been fun to try to sound like I’m a somebody. That’s the lure. More than money, it’s getting stories out, being read and competing with other writers on the site. This month, I’m sitting at number 2 on the list of most read, behind the amazing John Thomas Didymus from Nigeria. Didymus is the man, he’s really good, and so’s a woman from Greece and one from Spain. There are hundreds of writers and some not that good, but improving. It’s a community. It’s really a hobby and I don’t have as much time for it as other writers seem to, but it eats up spare time. I got this idea to use that time to write a book, maybe one on Bowen, though there’d be a limited audience, or one on acting. But.... But each month, the idea of making money and getting stories and opinions out there, being a ‘somebody’...it’s hard to say no. I thought writing a story about it might help to get it out of my system so I can move onto to bigger and better things. In the meantime...if you visit Digital Journal, don’t forget to click ‘like’.

Combining art with writing island couple founded publishing company for one-of-a-kind books SUSANNE MARTIN Editor

Larry and Sylvia Adams in their studio that holds examples of the stunning, one-of-a-kind books the couple has produced. Susanne Martin photo felt that she wanted to tell their stories. “This comes out of my own experience of growing up overseas and receiving letters,” she said. “Even as a child, I treasured those things. I remember visiting my grandfather in Alberta as a teenager and pulling out a cassette recorder. I didn’t live close by and had this longing to hear the story.” For Sylvia, a book has to reflect the person.”We like to take on projects that are creatively challenging,” she says. “It’s a great option to just combine text and photographs but we delight in getting the pulse and sense of who the person is and adding a creative touch.” Sylvia went back to university a few years back to get a diploma in printmaking, sculpture, drawing, painting and ceramics. “I loved every one of those disciplines,” Sylvia added. “Each of them brings a skill that increases my ability to make a customized art piece.” And many of the books Thumbprint has created are just that: pieces of art. “We want to

do a range of projects, from typical print on demand memory books to more customized versions” Larry says. For one of the books, Sylvia incorporated a piece of sculpture. She explained that they set out to produce a memory book for a former school teacher and principal and took the time to learn more about his life and his passions. “Every summer time, he would take his family in a boat up the coast for a holiday. There, he would find pieces of yellow cedar and carve them to create family totems,” Sylvia says. “He included humorous things about incidents that happened to family. One of the carvings is a self portrait that shows a twisted mouth.” Sylvia found out that the man had suffered from an abscessed tooth when he was a child. As a result, he had to have part of his jaw bone removed, leading to uneven facial features. “When I was interviewing him, I noticed that he would always turn that side of his face away,” Sylvia says. She came across the carving of a self-portrait that exaggerates

he books that are on display in Larry and Sylvia Adam’s studio are pieces of art - they are unique and beautiful, perfectly reflecting the stories they hold, as well as the care and creativity that went into crafting them. Thumbprint Books Inc. is the latest venture of the couple and it combines both their strengths and talents. They came to Bowen Island 20 years ago when Larry was the pastoral elder at Cates Hill Chapel. The move meant that he had to commute to Richmond for three years where he worked as a technical writer and layout editor. His work involved page lay-out and Larry became interested in graphic design software, photography, as well as creating hand-bound books. “It started with the interest to combine stories and images,” Larry said, adding that his first book was a collection of quotations he calls “distilled readings” that he put together in 1999. Out of the idea to gather meaningful passages to peruse and share with family and friends came a number of books. “I did volumes that contained Christmas readings and Easter readings,” Larry said. “That led me to explore different types of books, from different material and bindings, to different sizes and formats.” Sylvia added that an example was a long skinny book. “We wanted to see what holding a different format would feel like,” she said. This interest to come up with a special presentations has prevailed over the years and many of the couple’s projects involve unique, one-of-a-kind books. Producing books for other people started when Sylvia was asked to create a painting for family friends who were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary and wanted to have a memento of their time together. “I looked at the project and felt that it wasn’t really suitable for a painting,” Sylvia said. “I suggested putting a book together and incorporated photos of the couple, notes about their passions and pockets for people’s letters.” The book was very well received and led to a similar project: a book commemorating a 50th wedding anniversary. Again Sylvia found a unique approach. She created a box of letters from well-wishers around the world, each printed with a nautical chart as a background to honour the couple’s passion about boating. Receiving material related to people’s lives, Sylvia

We realize we can accommodate that better than a larger company and have more of a personal connection.” And even though the projects can often be time-consuming, Larry and Sylvia enjoy them. “Both of us are the most energized when we work on creative endeavours,” Larry says and Sylvia adds, “We’re at our best when we are in a place where we are curious and bring our own gifts.”

uilding on the 2012 win against the European Club Champions, Chelsea FC, and months of hard training, the Inter UBC Over50s Football team (including Bowen Islanders John Reid, Teun Shut, John Dumbrille, Ian Radley and Harry Hubball) were on track for another successful competition at the 5th World Club Over 50s Tournament in Barcelona.

After five games on the first day, Inter UBC had won four, scoring an average of three goals per game and was joint top of the group stages with FC Barcelona, England FA and Istanbul. By the end of day two and a further six games against other teams (including a very tense group stage game against FC Barcelona with Teun Shut netting the important equalizer), Inter UBC was second in the league

standings among the 12 competing international teams. On day three, England FA and Istanbul (past champions) were knocked out in the quarter finals, while Inter UBC progressed to beat Birmingham Vets 4-1 in the quarter final and then beat Albion UK 2-0 in the semi finals to advance to the final in front of a big crowd against the prestigious home favourite FC Barcelona. Unfortunately, Inter UBC conceded an early goal and was pushing to equalize but FC Barcelona held on and delivered a decisive counterattack which resulted in a stunning second and winning goal.

With competing teams from England, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Spain, Wales, Hungary, Ireland, Morocco, USA and Greece, Inter UBC Canada was the most successful team in the history of the five biennial-tournaments (i.e. twice winners, twice runners up to Team Berlin and FC Barcelona, and one third place finish). The 2013 Over 50s World Club Tournament in Spain was a fantastic experience with terrific camaraderie among the 12 competing teams. Next challenges in store for these Bowen Islanders and the Inter UBC team include competing for the 055s and 060s World Club Trophies.

orses have to overcome a lot of obstacles in their lives to be able to live with people, carry riders and are safe to be around. Getting a saddle on is an early obstacle, getting along with peers, taking a rider on a rough trail - these accomplishment involve different obstacles. At the BIHORA event at the equestrian ring in Crippen Park on Saturday, March 25, from 1 to 3, the obstacles will be physical barriers that require communication between horse and rider. The course will be using natural obstacles, similar to situations riders would realistically meet on a trail. The more the horses are exposed to these challenges, the more they learn where to put their feet. They also learn to put their trust in their riders. We will have riders of different levels and horses of different colours. We will explain the course and what we are doing so you will learn a little. Please come out and watch. As you draw closer, the M3 sedan becomes a wolf in wolf’s clothing. You see the power bulge in the hood, there to contain the all-new 414-hp, 4.0-liter V-8. You see the enormous drilled brake rotors. But we have to admit that sometimes our relationship with art changes. We outgrow the work in some way; we lose our passion for it. But we still hold on, not knowing what to do. Luckily the Gallery at Artisan Square is again staging an exhibit that will help artwork find a new home. Out of the Attic will be presented from September 13 to October 14. We are inviting collectors to contact us now (until July 7) if they have original artwork in good condition that is ready to move on. We accept paintings and sculptures and will select work to be sold at the exhibit on behalf of the owners, with the gallery retaining its usual modest commission. If owners choose to donate appropriate works, that would be appreciated. Money raised will go towards supporting the visual arts programming at the Bowen Island Arts Council. We have continued to retain Pottinger Gaherty to advise us so that every step we take in our development, we ensure that we continue to maintain The Cape’s environmental balance and integrity.

With every decision we make through the process of our development, we are very cognizant that we have a truly special property. We believe that it is in everyone’s interest for us to assume stewardship of the raw, natural beauty of The Cape lands; we as developers have a stake in it, as do the individual private owners of property at The Cape, and the residents of Bowen Island.

We are aware that in the past months, the island has become very concerned over the four dock applications that were approved by both the provincial and federal levels of government. It seems that it is time to settle some of the unrest that appears to have grown over some misunderstandings and misinformation. We would like to offer some clarification on the points of concern that we have learned of through the Stop The Docks campaign:

As such, Pottinger Gaherty Environmental Consultants Ltd., one of the most reputable experts in the industry, was brought on in 2006 to identify The Cape’s natural features and habitats. They guided us as we worked with Bowen Council and in consultation with the island’s residents to create a Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan that would preserve more than 300 acres - over half of the entire property - as community park, natural park or ecological reserve, and would donate 100% of the 3.7 km of waterfront to the public. Through their extensive fieldwork, Pottinger Gaherty came to understand our land and our foreshores intimately, and created an extensive report of several hundred pages to document every unique or sensitive environmental attribute on our property. The Council’s own environmental consultant, SNC-Lavalin Environment Inc., endorsed Pottinger Gaherty’s report. Although eventually, the then Council did not

Concern #1: The developers, are erecting “four giant docks, each as long as the Queen of Capilano, the ferry which connects Bowen Island to the mainland. The longest will be 492 feet long – same as the height of Vancouver’s third tallest building”. Clarification to Concern #1: The dock applications were made by individual private owners, not by The Cape on Bowen. Each dock and each approach varies in size. The largest float is designed for a 37-foot boat, and the float itself is shorter than the boat, at 32ft x 12 ft. The floats are similar to the sizes typical of the average docks around Bowen Island. The width of the approaches are kept to a minimum, 4 to 6 feet. The heights of approaches will not block the view of the horizon, but will allow public access to the foreshores and beaches.

Concern #2: “The shoreline and intertidal habitat feature a unique and sensitive environment.” Clarification to Concern #2: According to our environmental consultant, “the habitat value of the intertidal zone adjacent to the Cape on Bowen properties is similar to many other locations on Bowen Island and surrounding island/mainland areas.” Pottinger Gaherty was engaged to review the dock applications that each individual owner made. In each application, they investigated the intertidal zone and biota of the area of water lease. In every instance, they advised that “the types of structures proposed are common and known technologies in British Columbia coastal waters”, “potential impacts, mitigation and compensation opportunities are also well understood”, and “effective mitigation measures, BMPs (Best Management Practices) and monitoring can be employed to address the identified impacts, resulting in no net loss to the area’s productive capacity”. Pottinger Gaherty has prepared a Construction Environmental Management Plan and is providing an environmental monitor to ensure that best management practices are adhered to.

Concern #4: The total area of the proposed moorages is 34,900 square meters. Effectively, these are zones of public exclusion. Clarification to Concern #4: The areas do not represent physical structures. Rather, they are areas of the water leases, within which individual owners have rights to build specifically approved structures. The structures themselves are designed to not divide the beach and to permit the public to access and cross. We hope that these clarifications will help to alleviate the concerns expressed by Bowen Island residents. The Cape on Bowen would like to emphasize again that we do take your concerns to heart and into serious consideration. We hold ourselves to high standards in protecting The Cape’s unique environment. That is why we have diligently engaged our environmental consultant to advise, manage and monitor all our work, and those of our property owners. With sensitivity and respect for all, we strive our utmost best to balance your concerns with the fair rights of the individual property owners, which are equal to those rights enjoyed by all other private waterfront owners on Bowen Island. Discovering treasures along the trails

Last week, Alan Whitehead led a group of Bowen Nature Club members up to the summit of Mt. Collins, to Mud Lake and Honeymoon lake, and back to Hood Point West. The Nature Club gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Sally Freeman, who escorted hikers through her property. The day was lovely and mild with very little rain and participants found many treasures along the way. The next event of the Bowen Nature Club is the popular Invasive Plant Walk, scheduled for May 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. Most ecologists agree that invasive plants and animals are some of the biggest threats to natural environments worldwide. Join this walk led by Bowen scientist Leo Frid to find out what an invasive plant is and meet some of Bowen’s common invaders. Meet in front of the library. For more info, contact Leo Frid at 2688.
