Taking Action on Water Quality Teck operates five steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia which employ over 4,000 people. We raise our families in the valley, fish and swim in the river and care deeply about the environment. That’s why we’re taking action to ensure that water quality is protected in the valley now and for generations to come. We are working with governments, First Nations and communities to develop an Elk Valley Water Quality Plan that will maintain the health of the watershed. Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

The winners of the Curl BC Annual Awards for the 201213 season can now be revealed and two Kootenay residents are winners. Among the winners are Team Brown, from Kamloops Curling Club, who won gold at the M& M Meat Shops 2013 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in February. The team went on to represent Canada at the World Junior Curling Championships in Sochi, Russia. The team has been awarded the Team of the Year award. Skip Corryn Brown, third Erin Pincott, second Samantha Fisher, lead Sydney Fraser and coaches Ken Brown and Brian Fisher all live in Kamloops. Langley Curling Club was awarded the Curling Centre of the Year award for the wonderful service it provides to the curling community – to both recreational and competitive curlers. The club was home to a number of BC champions this past season, including both the men’s and women’s senior champions, the women’s master champions and junior curlers

from the winning 2013 Tim Hortons BC Junior Men’s Curling Championship team and the winning 2013 BC Mixed Doubles Championship team. Locally, Donna Butler (Cranbrook Curling Club) won the Janette Robbins Award (Builder). Donna is highly respected as an official and volunteer in whatever capacity is necessary. Curl BC said that she won because, “No job is too big or too small. She cleans, helps with the ice, helps children at the schools in the area become interested and more familiar with the game, among other things.” Another local winner was Vernon Ronmark (Creston Curling Centre) who won the Pat Kennedy Award (Long Service Volunteer). Vernon was selected to win this award because of his tremendous personal commitment and contribution to the sport of curling in BC over many years. All the winners will be presented with plaques at the Business of Curling Symposium Banquet on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Victoria Ave. crosswalk construction hazard Submitted More care will have to be taken in the next couple of weeks when driving down Victoria Avenue. Drivers and pedestrians are advised of construction occurring at the crosswalk on Victoria Avenue and 4th Street North, in front of the Save on Foods property. City Public Works has removed the old amber flashing sidewalk lights in order to install large over street crosswalk signs and lights in order to better improve safety and visibility for those using the crosswalk. However, the crosswalk is now uncontrolled for the duration of the construction work, which could take up to two weeks to complete. Motorists using

Victoria Avenue are strongly encouraged to please slow down when approaching that crosswalk and closely watch for any pedestrians.

Recently, 75 youth gathered at a Youth Forum in Vancouver, BC to learn about cancer prevention and build skills to take action on relevant health and cancer prevention issues, becoming part of a larger movement fighting for a world where no Canadian fears cancer. Early last April, the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, called on youth from across British Columbia to take a stand against cancer in their communities – and they answered. The 75 young leaders, between the ages of 19-25, participated in the day-long Forum to discuss what healthy communities look like and how to get involved. There were opportunities to learn and share, to network and see a broader vision for global change. “The Canadian Cancer Society is celebrating its 75th anniversary this

year,” says Amber Hay, Cancer Control Coordinator, Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon. “We feel that if we equip our future leaders of change with some tools to make a difference in their communities, we can set the stage for the next 75 years of cancer prevention.” Designed by youth, for youth, the Forum featured presentations by keynote speaker, Richard Loat, Founder, Five Hole for Food; Cathy Adair, VP of Cancer Control, Canadian Cancer Society; Chloe GowJarrett, Lululemon Director of Goal Setting; and Ashleigh Wilson, an inspirational young cancer survivor. Throughout the day, Forum attendees were encouraged to contribute to a multimedia ‘board’ (photos, videos, etc) where they could share their ideas on health and healthy communities. The youth also participated in sessions

A total of 15 youth from the Southern Interior attended the Forum, including Jenny Byford,

adults who are true leaders within their communities goes unmatched. We know about 50% of cancers can be prevented and with the support of youth involvement in advocacy for healthy public policy, education of environmental carcinogens, and individual behaviour change, we can significantly reduce our population’s cancer risk. The Canadian Cancer Society has been at the forefront of disease prevention for years, and involving youth in the process will only fuel their success. The youth who attended are motivated to start healthy living initiatives in their communities and their actions will generate community benefits far beyond just cancer prevention”. The forum took place at the Simon Fraser University, Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver. “We’re thrilled that we were able to give these amazing youth an experience that they can take beyond the event itself,” says Hay. “They will be fantastic ambassadors for community conversations and healthy change.” For 75 years, the Canadian Cancer Society has been with Canadians in the fight for life. We have been relentless in our commitment to prevent cancer, fund research and support Canadians touched by cancer. From this foundation, we will work with Canadians to change cancer forever so fewer Canadians are diagnosed with the disease and more survive. Success by Six hits 10-year milestone Submitted

Research has shown that the first six years of life lays the foundation for a person’s life. A unique provincial partnership that bases its work on this principle is now celebrating its 10th anniversary. Success by 6 helps to ensure that children ages 0 to 6 develop the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical skills they need as they enter school. This groundbreaking partnership, bringing together the public, the not for profit and the business sectors came together with a vision that it takes a whole community to support families with children under six years of age. Communities understand the needs of their young families and are best positioned to respond to those needs. Here in the East Kootenay Success By 6 funds Early Childhood Development Teams in seven communities, Paq’mi Nuq’yuk Aboriginal Early Years Program, Family Friendly Business Engagement Projects and contributes to a variety of community events and training opportunities. In British Columbia, Success By 6 was born on May 21, 2003 when the United Way of the Lower Mainland, The Savings and Credit Unions of BC (now known as Central 1 Credit Union) and the BC Government through the Ministry of Children & Family Development signed on to the Early Childhood Development Provincial Partnership. Over the past ten years, Success By 6 has built a network of Early Years community coalitions across BC that involve local credit unions, local United Ways and government representatives along with many diverse stakeholders including parents, grandparents, educators, health professionals, local governments, Aboriginal leaders, children’s librarians, recreation coordinators and many more. Collectively they plan how their community’s children can best be supported. For more information visit our website at www.successby6bc.ca.

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Get Your Fill of Tomatoes

When it comes to Canadians’ favourite garden vegetable, the tomato has been topping the list for years. So it is no wonder that each season growers are developing new varieties. The greatest challenge for gardeners is to decide which variety to grow. There is a tomato for every space and every lifestyle. The key is to start with a strong, healthy plant. Watch the variety you purchase, some tomatoes are indeterminate, meaning they are vining tomatoes that will keep on growing and setting fruit right up until the fall frost. Early Girl, Brandywine and Beefsteak are a few names that you may recognize from this type. If, however, you want to grow a tomato that produces a large yield and are all ripe within a short period of time, you should look for tomatoes that are determinate. Roma, Sub Arctic and Patio are a few of these varieties. For example, if you are growing tomatoes in the hopes of making tomato sauce, you want to choose determinate varieties. Tomatoes will grow in a greenhouse, in the garden or even in a planter on a patio or balcony, provided they get enough sun, food, water and can be pollinated by insects, fruit set spray or even a paintbrush. If you are looking for a tomato to keep in your garden all summer and into the fall, then the later varieties will work for you. Beefsteak tomatoes have beautiful, huge and firm fruit. They take all summer to mature and sometimes some will have to get picked and stored inside to ripen. If you are looking for a variety with a shorter time to ripen, Manitoba or Early Girl can be a good choice. These two produce nice medium to big tomatoes that will ripen in 20-30 days. Another thing to consider when deciding on a tomato is the kind of plant. Do you want a short, stocky bush type variety or are you prepared to stake or trellis it. You may even consider a trailing plant such as the Tumbler Tomato. They are considered a cherry tomato and have been bred to “tumble” out of a hanging basket in a cascade of sweet, red fruit. This plant is a vigorous grower and does require a very regular schedule of watering and feeding. Returning this year after a great first season is the ‘Mighty Mato’. This is a grafted tomato, promising gardeners healthier plants and higher yields. Grafting has been used for centuries for fruit trees, but only recently has it been applied to vegetable production. Grafted vegetables are created when the top part of one plant (scion) is attached to the root system of a separate plant (root stock). When their tissues heal, they fuse into one plant with the best qualities of each. The root stock contributes vigor and disease resistance while the top part is chosen for exceptional fruit flavour and quality. The resulting plant is more vigorous and productive. By grafting favourite conventional varieties like Beefsteak onto special root stock, good varieties become super varieties. And even more exciting is the use of heirloom varieties like Amish Paste and Mortgage Lifter. Heirloom varieties offer unique colours and flavours. The advantages of grafting can include a greater disease and pest resistance; greater tolerance to extreme temperature - both hot and cold; earlier, longer and more abundant harvest of big, beautiful fruit and the grafted plants are less susceptible to over- and under-watering. Proper planting is important for ‘Mighty Matos’. Unlike other tomatoes, grafted tomatoes should not be planted deeply in the ground. Make sure the grafted area, which can be seen at the bottom of the stem, remains above the soil surface. Otherwise, the top (scion) will form its own roots and remove the benefits of grafting. Throughout the season make sure you fertilize your tomatoes with a tomato fertilizer. These customized fertilizers are designed specifically for tomatoes and make a huge difference to the quality of your fruit. There are many more products that will help gardeners produce bigger and better harvests; come down and talk to the experts at the garden centre to see what is out there. Till next week... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin
