A sure sign that spring has arrived in the South Cariboo is when the patter of little webbed feet returns to the wetlands in and around the community. These goslings at 100 Mile Marsh celebrated the fine weather by waddling out of the nest for a stroll.
BC Coroners Service warns of high-water dangers near streams and rivers The BC Coroners Service is warning residents to take extreme care near streams and rivers, which are currently running much faster and higher than normal. People can significantly underestimate the force that can be unleashed by a fast-running river, Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said, adding they do not realize how different it is from the quiet stream where they regularly swim, raft or paddle. Three such deaths have already
occurred this spring: two young men were swept away in Golden Ears Provincial Park, and a young woman who fell into Swift Current Creek near Valemount. If a river is running quickly, about 15 1/4 centimetres (or six inches) of water can sweep a person downstream, and a little over six-10ths of a metre (or two feet) of water can carry away most vehicles. Although the bank of a fastrunning creek may look stable, such banks are often eroded by

the water and can collapse with the added weight of people standing on them. Moving water or standing pools of water can also contain dangerous debris, so no one should try to walk or drive through them. The warning comes as the BC Coroners Service releases its newest report into Accidental Drowning Deaths, covering the five-year period from 2008 through 2012. The report looks at a total of 397 deaths over the

Input sought on Canada Post’s future Good Deals
K a m l o o p s T h omp s on - C ar i b o o MP Cathy McLeod is inviting her constituents to have their say in the future of Canada Post. “Last month, the Conference Board of Canada released a report on the future of Canada Post. It projected the relentless decline in mail volume may lead to losses of close to $1 billion a year by 2020,” McLeod explains. Canada Post is at a pivotal moment in its history, she adds. After successfully adjusting to fax machines, e-mail, and broadband Internet, a combination of high speed Internet and smart tablets came along and they have shaken the mail business to its core.
believe that, despite the spread of electronic communications, they continue to need postal services, but they recognize the need for change. • Customers see the
current price of a stamp as good value, and are willing to tolerate slower service than they now receive. • The postal system remains an integral part of how small businesses
send invoices and collect payments. The Conference Board then offered a framework for discussion of options addressing the challenge:
UP AND OVER
• Converting Canadian households’ door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes; • Price increases; • Further replacement of corporate post offices with franchised postal outlets; • Reduced speed of delivery; and • Alternate day delivery for mail. “I believe Canada Post has to seriously consider all of the options in order to stem their losses, as well as engage Canadians in this discussion,” McLeod says, adding she encourages all of her constituents to give their feedback either online at www. canadapost.ca or by mail to: The Future of Canada Post; 2701 Riverside Dr., Suite N0800; Ottawa, Ont.; K1A 0B1. St at ist i c a l ly, Canadians mailed almost one billion fewer letters in 2012 than they did in 2006. This loss of letter mail volume means financial losses. In 2011, for the first time in 17 years, Canada Post failed to earn a profit and reported a loss of $327 million before tax. In the coming months, Canada Post faces the challenge of considering all options to avoid becoming a burden on taxpayers. In doing so, Canada Post must also continue to meet its public policy obligations, such as serving every Canadian address, including those in rural and northern Canada. Canada Post engaged the Conference Board of Canada to conduct an independent assessment of the future of postal service in Canada. The Conference Board report found: • Most Canadians

Rare hybrid spotted Odd goose has no fellow fowl at marsh Carole Rooney
To celebrate our 150th year and to honour our long history as a bustling transportation centre for passenger, freight and service industries, we are hosting a GATHERING OF WAGONS, STAGECOACHES and PRE-HORSELESS CARRIAGES on May 25th and 26th, 2013.

A rare goose, which appears to be a hybrid between a Canada goose and a white-fronted goose, has been spotted at 100 Mile Marsh. Chris Nickless, a photographer and bird-watching enthusiast, photographed the aquatic bird at the marsh on May 15 after hearing about it from well-known local birder Tom Godin. While Canada geese are commonly seen in the region, Nickless says white-fronted geese are only occasional visitors, and hybrids are quite rare. “It looks like none of the Canada geese will have anything to do with it.” He found only a few photos on the Internet of similar hybrids in Eastern Canada, but none in the West, Nickless adds. This cross-bred goose has the white-fronted’s orange feet and orange bill (although also speckled with black), while Canada geese have black feet and bills. The hybrid also has more white feathers on the rump, but fewer on the face than the Canada goose. It also lacks its distinctive wide, white face stripe. Godin frequently leads tours and lectures for bird watching groups, and has extensive knowledge of many birds spotted in the South Cariboo, but says he has never seen this hybrid, here or anywhere else. His copy of The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America references these geese as having hybridized,

“ON LINE”
This rare goose hybrid has been spotted on several occasions recently at the 100 Mile Marsh. Normally, geese breeds segregate naturally during mating season, with each species sporting unique courtship rituals.
but only occasionally, Godin adds. “It would be hit or miss – so they couldn’t tell you where it might happen, or how often you would see them – but it does happen.” However, he explains the different breeds would have to “break through a few barriers” to mate because each bird has its own courtship ritual that keeps them apart during mating season. This goose is probably a male, Godin says, since the other birds are shunning it. “If there is any kind of problem with a male – if he doesn’t look right to a female of the same species – it’s the female who usually rejects the male. Males are not quite as picky.” This odd goose also has less white on its breast than the Canada goose, but Godin noted the white-fronted goose’s name refers to the white on its face
above the bill, not on its body. Nickless adds the white-fronted sometimes stops in the South Cariboo, but migrates to the Arctic much earlier in the year, so this
sole bird has no fellow waterfowl in that breed nearby, either. “The Canada geese would swim away from the hybrid any time I saw it. So, he is kind of lonely.”

Industry an integral part of CNRE
The Canada North Resources Expo (CNRE) is being held at the CN Centre in Prince George, May 31-June 1. This event will showcase more than four acres of indoor and outdoor exhibits featuring all the equipment needed to build the infrastructure for the $70 billion worth of resource projects
planned and underway in northern British Columbia during the next 10 years and beyond. Day 2 of the event has been dubbed Future of the Industry Day during which industry stakeholders and workers will be encouraged to bring their families to the CNRE. This will enable them to intro-
duce and educate the next generation to these thriving industries and possible career choices. Recruitment is a major issue for these industries and the families of the current workers could very well be the next generation of skilled trades’ people to continue on with these mega projects and we welcome them to
the event. Anyone who purchases a regular admission ($10) on this day or have pre-registered will receive free entry for their families. 100 Mile House and area residents interested in prospective careers in these industries are also encouraged to come with resume in hand, as several exhibiting companies are on the hunt

10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! 1-800-222-TIPS There were a series of thefts from and mischief to vehicles, which occurred at businesses in the north end of 100 Mile House and Highway 97 between May 12 and 13. Several vehicles had the soft tops damaged and items stolen. Other vehicles had batteries and other items removed. These incidents may be related to other incidents which occurred in Boston Bar and Cache Creek earlier in the day. If you have any information on this or any other crimes in the 100 Mile House area call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Your identity will remain unknown. Should your information lead to the arrest of the responsible party Crime Stoppers will pay cash for the TIP.

Mayors’ Caucus wants to work with UBCM Mayors from across British Columbia had two days of successful meetings in Prince George, where they examined the challenges of B.C.’s communities and the sharing of best practices, April 29-30. The mayors dealt with a number of pressing issues common to the province’s communities and endorsed the following statements: • The BC Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC) supports the Union of British Columbia (UBCM) efforts to secure a long-term, predictable funding source

The board has appointed chief financial officer (CFO) Scott Reid as corporate administration officer for the CRD to fill the need to have someone hold powers to execute land-use covenants, certify documents, administer oaths, take affirmations and certain other duties. Reid will continue to serve in his role as CFO.

New outreach clinic available for MS patients
By Jeff Nagel Black Press
Kinder Morgan’s proposed twinning of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline through the Lower Mainland looks more likely with the B.C. Liberals staying in power than if the NDP had won the May 14 provincial election. NDP Leader Adrian Dix had vowed to block a big increase in oil tanker exports from Metro Vancouver. His reversal of a previous pledge to wait for a formal project application became a major campaign issue. Speaking to reporters the day after the election, Christy Clark said she believed the TV debate was the turning point of the campaign for the B.C. Liberal rebound and the NDP’s Kinder Morgan position was a factor. Clark said voters weren’t impressed by “the idea that you’re going to say ‘No’ to economic development before you even see it.” She stressed the province will put any Kinder Morgan proposal to the same requirements as the planned Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline to Kitimat, including world-leading safeguards against ocean and land spills, as well as a substantial share of benefits for British Columbia’s risk. “The five conditions aren’t going to change,” Clark said. “Any expansion of heavy oil is going to have to meet those five conditions.” The Trans Mountain pipeline from northern Alberta to Burnaby has operated for more than 50 years, but Kinder Morgan wants to nearly triple its flow to 890,000 barrels per day, resulting in many more oil tankers plying Vancouver harbour.

Demand will be monitored and evaluated during the first year of the outreach clinic’s operation.

Clark: pipeline issue pivotal
The Kamloops outreach clinic represents an expansion in service, allowing patients, who would ordinarily have travelled to Kelowna or the Lower Mainland, the option of being seen at Royal Inland for a consultation with local neurologist Dr. Mudassir Iqbal. A nurse from the MS clinic at Kelowna General Hospital will travel once a month for two days to support Kamloops area patients. The MS clinic in Kelowna will continue to provide day-to-day support for
