to Make Your Start-Up Becoming a business owner is a goal for many women. Starting a business is seldom easy, but the process can be streamlined when a person knows the steps to take. For women who want to become ‘Janes’, there are certain steps to take to develop and launch a business. There are many resources that can help women and men start a company. Here is some of their guidance in doing so. • Find a mentor. There are organizations like SCORE and Women’s Business Centers that provide free resources online and locally for the prospective small business owner. Individuals also can connect with current business owners in the neighborhood and pick their brains about the best way to begin. • Write a business plan. This may seem like an intimidating part of starting a business, but getting thoughts written out in black and white can be a good organizational step. However, there’s no specific formula for a business plan. Listing the type of business, marketing ideas, competition, and financial data is a good place to start. Also, having a business plan in place may make it easier to secure a loan. • Secure funding. Businesses require start-up capital. Some small business owners have their own savings they’ll be devoting to the business, while others solicit investors. The majority of business developers apply for a business loan. This is where a business plan

can be an asset. Also, grants may be an option. According to the SBA, some business grants are available through state and local programs, nonprofit organizations and other groups. For example, some states provide grants for expanding child care centers, creating energy efficient technology and developing marketing campaigns for tourism. • Secure legal representation. There are certain business laws and employee laws that an individual will need to know to avoid fines and other legal recourse. Securing legal representation ahead of time can help prospective business owners navigate the legal system. • Budget and plan for marketing and advertising. It’s important to get the word out about the new business. While this can start with family and friends, eventually the efforts will have to go beyond. Think about community-based activities that can advertise the new business. Work with schools and community organizations if yours is a niche business for children or seniors. A Web site and newspaper advertising, both in print and online, can be a good starting point. Keep in mind that it can be a few years before small business owners start to realize a profit on their efforts. So don’t give up too easily and soon another successful “Jane” will be part of the economy.

A Passion For

Photography

Cara brady Morning Star Staff

She treasures family pictures going back to the 1800s, has a collection of 200 cameras, has hung out of an airplane to get the perfect photo, owns a thriving photography business and has a wall full of awards. Brenda Hala admits that she has a passion for photography. “I can remember my mother, grandmother and aunt always having cameras and taking photos at family events. I started taking pictures when I was 14 and got a 110 Kodak Instamatic camera. I still have it,” she said. “I loved thinking that I was taking pictures that someone would be able to enjoy and have pleasant memories about in years to come. I got my first 35 mm camera when I was 19 but I wasn’t thinking of photography as a career.” She has her sister to thank for suggesting she apply for a job at the place where she took her film to be developed. There was no opening the first time she asked but the next time she took film in, she was offered a job and found herself manager of a studio in Regina at age 19. It wasn’t long before she was managing four stores. “I was also taking photos, baby pictures, weddings, families, and enjoying meeting all the people. I always talk with people before a shoot so I know them and how to help them tell their stories and make their vision happen. At that time, photography was still very much a

man’s world and it was wonderful to have people have the confidence that I as a young woman could do this,” said Hala. By the time she was in her 20s, she had moved to Vancouver and was managing 443 stores of a franchise around the province. “I traveled a lot to the stores and did some photography but I missed doing more. I know how much photos can mean. I lost a sister and the photos I took of her help her daughters, who were young at the time, to remember her better.” After seeing most of B.C., Hala decided to move to Vernon in 1989 so she could do more photography. She bought a store franchise in 1991 and has operated as an independent business, Brenda Hala Photography, since 1996. “It was scary to be on my own and wonder if I could survive but I found out quickly that I could. I liked having a storefront and the friendliness of the people.” Hala is a member of the Professional Photographers of Canada, provincially and nationally, and has her Master of Photographic Arts from the organization, as well as awards in numerous categories, including scenic, wildlife and animal portraiture. She specializes in family and pet portraits and business photography.

Women in Business

Being a photographer is more than just pushing a button. It is really how you see and being able to translate that into a photo. You are creating something that will last for generations.

“I like the challenge of a variety of subjects. It’s my dream to go on a photo safari to Africa,” she said. She shares her tips for taking good photos, starting with knowing your equipment and what you can expect of it. The first thing to think of is capturing the moment from all angles, getting lower for a child’s eye view and standing back to take in the whole scene and not forgetting the candid moments of unposed emotion and expression. She advises photographers to make sure they get themselves into some of the photos of special events. And don’t forget to have photos printed on good paper with quality ink so future generations can enjoy them. Don’t trust to storing everything digitally as some photos could be lost and will be more enjoyed in albums or on walls.

Hala said that while technology has changed photography, there will always be a place for the knowledgeable photographer who sees the art in the world. “Being a photographer is more than just pushing a button. It is really how you see and being able to translate that into a photo. You are creating something that will last for generations.” Hala has been a member of Vernon Women in Business since 1994. “I think women are more open to sharing and supporting each other. Even though we are not all in the same business, I like to talk to other members and get their point of view and encouragement. It’s good to be able to help others out when you can and I’ve lent an ear to others along the way. I like the diverse members and the network of people who know what you do so we can recommend other members,” she said. “I believe in helping the community with photos at charity events or gift certificates for community causes. I can’t imagine doing anything else but photography. I am fortunate to have found a job that I love and I will always like the challenge of new ideas — I have an infrared camera that I’m playing with now. “Photography will likely keep changing and I’m going to be there.”

Sigrid-Ann Thors takes a break in her busy schedule as a volunteer and arts advocate. Kristin Froneman Morning Star Staff

It was while in Grade 1 at a Penticton primary school that SigridAnn Thors decided to call it quits. Thors can’t remember exactly what triggered her decision to want to leave school, but she says that over three days of resistance, she made so much noise that her teacher had to put her in the hallway until her grandmother came and got her. At 73, Thors continues to fight for what she believes in, and that has served her well as a music educator, politician, arts advocate, and volunteer. Thors first came to the North Okanagan in the mid-’70s to teach band at Fulton Junior Secondary. “I had been travelling and taught in Abbotsford when I was offered a job here. The people in charge thought I was a male (due to her name). They didn’t want a female band teacher, so I ended up teaching the music program in elementary school,” she said. During her tenure as a teacher, Thors reached her goal to make children up to Grade 8 more music literate. She also played cello in the Okanagan Symphony. However, it was another type of duty that soon called her. “I was busy bitching and belly aching with a friend of mine and he said if you feel so determined about it, why don’t you run for office,” said Thors. She did and in 1976 was elected as an alderman –– the only female –– and served for two terms on city council.

When then Mayor Bob Neil died in 1978, Thors stepped in as acting mayor — the first woman to ever take on the role — and she remembers there was some resistance on the part of some to do business with her. “I had to deal with some sexist attitudes then,” she said. “There was one instance when the mayor was requested to speak at a conference. When they were told it was a she, they said, ‘we can’t have a female at the meeting’ and that they wanted an alderman.” Thors didn’t let some of those attitudes stop her. Instead, she got things done. She piloted a study for an industrial park while part of an economic development committee and also played a role in landing a federal government project on energy conservation that used Vernon as one of only three model communities in the country. Thors also got involved in federal politics and ran the office of Vernon’s Progressive Conservative candidate when her council terms ended. It was also around that time she decided upon a career change and left teaching for good. She also left Vernon and worked as a cultural consultant with Employment and Immigration in Ottawa before moving to Saskatoon and then Prince George, where she worked with those city’s respective symphonies.

Thors moved back to Vernon in 2001 to look after her family. A month after returning, she bumped into Marie Fleming, the late grande dame of the Vernon Performing Arts Centre Society, who tried to convince Thors to join the board of what was to become Vernon’s brand, new theatre. “At the next board meeting, I was put on the board and two months later I was president, and I’ve been there ever since,” laughed Thors, adding those early years were challenging. “At the time, the building was a hole in the ground, and the fly tower was four storeys tall and it needed to be eight,” she said, adding the best thing the board did was hire executive director Michael Cade, who was eventually replaced by Pamela Burns Resch four years ago. Resch, who previously worked with Thors when she was director of the Vernon Public Art Gallery (VPAG), says her colleague is a woman of action. “Whether she involves herself in the area of civic duty, arts and culture, education, the environment or community volunteerism, she works tirelessly to achieve her stated goals,” she said. “Her passion centers on her belief that everyone can improve the vibrancy of community, if they do what they can. Her energy and commitment is evident in her every endeavour.” Thors has also never given up on civic duty. She ran for council again in 2003 and 2006, losing out both times, and says she might run again one day. “If you can’t handle the fire of politics, then you better get out of the

kitchen.” She also hasn’t stopped speaking her mind and fighting for what she believes in as an arts advocate. As a board member of the VPAG since 2004, Thors has been advocating for a new art gallery in Vernon and says she will continue the fight despite the gallery referendum being put on the back burner by the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee. Her involvement in the arts goes back to when she co-chaired the first B.C. Arts Council Conference that occurred outside of Vancouver in 1981. She was the regional representative for the Assembly of B.C. Arts Councils from 1979 to 1984, and the B.C. representative and executive member of the Canadian Conference of the Arts from 1983 to 1984. Thors, along with three other members of the arts council, co-created the annual craft show society in 1975. The society evolved into what is now Creative Chaos, the largest craft show of its kind in Western Canada. Also interested in the environment, Thors has served as chairperson for Sustainable Environment Network (SENS), and currently sits on the Okanagan College Foundation board. She has served as a trustee for Trinity United Church, and is also a member of Grannies a GoGo, the Vernon – South Africa connection. “It’s worth it to serve,” said Thors. “I personally feel as individuals we can make great change, but you have to do your share to make change possible.”

Statistics show there has been a 50% increase in the number of self-employed women in Canada over the past 15 years. In fact, the number of women-owned businesses is growing at a rate that is 60% faster than those owned by men. These women are surprisingly older, too: They’re taking the time to acquire work experience and gain a more rounded knowledge of their chosen work environments before setting out on their own. The average age of a woman who owns a business is 41. Yet, although men may experience certain challenges and difficulties within the work force, these same obstacles are even more complicated for women who may have to balance work and family life. Some say it’s a balancing act that can’t be done, while others insist it simply requires perseverance and good organizing skills. Cultural obstacles also include gender inequality and income: A woman earns, on average, $0.80 for every dollar earned by a man, which means she has to work more to earn as much as her male counterpart - even in the self employment sector. Therefore, although the Canadian workforce has become increasingly open to women, their personal economic gains are still limited and familial obligations continue to add pressure. This important week is an ideal time to bring these issues to the forefront, promote women in business and recognize the due that is owed to them.

Tips for women juggling a family & a career The days when single income households were the norm are long gone, as nowadays both Mom and Dad must work in order to make ends meet. That reality has left many women juggling the obligations of motherhood with the obligations of a successful career. Such a juggling act is seldom easy, and many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. The following are a few tips to make balancing work and family a little easier. * Share the responsibilities. While the days of the single-income household may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after the children and make it to all of their children’s sporting events or other school-related events. But those responsibilities should be shared so women can ensure they’re giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle such responsibilities equally so each parent knows when they have some wiggle room. Such sharing and scheduling can considerably reduce the stress of juggling a family and a career. * Exercise daily. Juggling a family and a career is often stressful, and stress can have a very adverse effect on your health. Women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. It’s easy to become irritable when stressed, and no mother wants to be irritable in the presence of her children. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is a great way to alleviate the stress of juggling a family and a career, and you can even incorporate your family into your exercise routine, going for nightly walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard. * Stay involved with your child’s school. Many mothers find staying active with their children’s school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such

involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so you should have ample time to arrange a break from the office without neglecting your professional responsibilities. * Take advantage of work-fromhome policies. As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it’s only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on childcare, and you are certain to appreciate the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month.

Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it’s your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it’s ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home. Another way to plan ahead is to look at kids’ school schedules and plan trips during the school year when school won’t be in session. A threeday weekend is a perfect opportunity to plan a getaway to a nearby locale where the whole family can relax and reconnect without the pressures of daily life. Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but there are ways that today’s mothers can raise a happy family and still have a successful career.

Dr. Christine Hatfield knew from the first year of medical school that she wanted to specialize in women’s health. After a busy and rewarding 10 years in obstetrics and gynecology, she decided it was time for a change in her practice. “I thought that there had to be a better way to help women with the changes that happen to their bodies rather than with just surgery and pills,” she said. “When I started to learn more about traditional medicine, I was pleasantly surprised to meet other physicians who thought the same way. We were taught that there is only one way to do things and medicine has become very compartmentalized. We should consider all factors in a person’s health care because all systems are interconnected.” She studied with the Anti-Aging Academy of America, which teaches physicians to look at the body from a more functional aspect. “I got a better understanding of alternative therapies and how diet, exercise and stress management have to be considered along with a person’s medical condition,” she said. She prefers to use the term healthy aging, which means to her that a person can have a happy, productive life at any age. While her patients are women of all ages, most are in their 40s to 60s. Hatfield knew she wanted to practice medicine combining the best of traditional and western and started to think about how to do that. The result was North Okanagan Women’s Health, opened recently in Vernon. “People tell me they are so excited to meet a doctor who is open to these ideas. I looked at the science behind different therapies to know how to use them and I will always

recommend western medicine when it is needed. I call it integrated medicine. The centre is a resource where women can get the right information they need to help them make decisions for themselves,” said Hatfield. “It’s about balance in life. A symptom is telling you that something is wrong, that the body doesn’t want to go on like that anymore, and you have to get to the root of the symptom. What is happening with health could be a combination of things that have to be addressed and getting better is a process. I knew I couldn’t do it all myself, that it had to be a team approach.” said Hatfield. She put together a team of knowledgeable staff members who would complement her medical background. When a new patient comes to the centre, she has an hour appointment with Hatfield, followed by a half—hour health plan review with patient educator Ann Pollock, who has a background in nursing and naturopathy and advises on supplement choices. “Women are really wanting this and are so grateful. They say they feel we are very supportive and they are happy that there is someone who will help them get back to a functioning life. Some people might lose hope but we are to be a resource and help them find hope,” said Pollock, who also sees patients on later appointments with Hatfield. She also runs weight loss programs and is available to answer questions by phone. Genette James is the in-house life transitions counsellor who is available to help with life balancing and stress coping techniques.

“I am so privileged to work with Dr. Hatfield. The centre is an amazing asset to the community. I do individual and group counseling and relaxation training. It’s exciting to work on the team to help women learn how to best manage life transitions and embrace and enjoy those changes,” she said. Personal trainer and yoga instructor Rhona Parsons teaches Pfilates (pelvic floor Pilates), a non-surgical way to manage incontinence and prolapse. Receptionist Laura Angelucci shared the vision since the beginning. “The patients love her. She’s always there,” said Hatfield, who is pleased to be practising integra-

tive medicine in a way that brings new balance to her own busy life. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, she is married to Dr. Glenn Vaz and they have three daughters. They moved to British Columbia in 2003. “I feel I am making a difference for patients who are seeking out alternative therapies. We are here to mentor them on their path. The team members are all working together for the good of the patient,” she said. Hatfield and her team are working towards establishing a yetto-be-named foundation that will inspire young girls to become confident, self-loving women.

Ingrid Dilschneider would love to mix work and play more often, but as director of sales and marketing for Wesbild Okanagan at Predator Ridge, that doesn’t always happen. Her go-time pretty much coincides with the nationally acclaimed resort’s prime golf season, so she rarely sees the course during peak periods. Instead, she fits in her rounds in during the shoulder seasons. Asked how her golf game is, Dilschneider deadpanned: “Terrible, I’m in marketing.” Laughing, she added: “I love to golf, but it’s still a one-way relationship right now.”

Working in a man’s world, I have never let that stop me. It’s very important to break down those barriers.

Before Wesbild, she spent five years as marketing manager at Mission Hill Winery. “The appeal is the leadership in the category,” said Dilschneider, who has carefully aligned her career with premium properties, or ones on the fast track. “They’re innovative, they’re not afraid to be risk takers, and that to me is important. That just gives you the freedom to let you do what you’re good at.” Given the highly competitive golf resort industry, Dilschneider added taking risks is sometimes neces-

sary to stand apart from the rest. She points to some of Predator’s initiatives like the Hockey Canada and Telus partnerships and the Swing Like a Girl program, which was launched by Predator pro EJ Eathorne last year. “We’re already the premier golf resort in Canada, so you have to stay on your game. Everybody’s looking up to you, so you always want to make sure you’re one step ahead. “We’re never dormant.” It is that ceaseless approach that helped Predator earn Marketer of the Year at the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Excellence Awards in 2010 and again in 2012. Working in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry, Dilschneider admits she sometimes feels the need to prove herself a little more. But thanks to Swing Like a Girl and other initiatives, she says the gender balance – in both golf itself, and in the front office – has improved. “Working in a man’s world, I have never let that stop me. It’s very important to break down those barriers.” “Do we have to prove ourselves a little more sometimes? Absolutely, but I’ve been fortunate with the mentors I’ve had who have shown me how to do that properly.” For young women getting into marketing, Dilschneider has some fairly pragmatic advice: “You have to start at the bottom and work your way up, and there’s nothing wrong with that. When you work your way up, you learn every aspect of the business.” Dilschneider also recommends seeking out a mentor. To this day, she leans on hers for advice. “They push you and challenge you to do your best.”

One of her biggest goals as chamber president is to improve membership value, and tap into the younger businesses. To achieve that, Dilschneider says the chamber is continually working to change peoples’ perceptions of what it does. “With chambers, people really aren’t understanding their relevance. It’s up to us as community leaders to help chambers find their relevance and give value to the membership. “It’s ever-changing; it can’t be what it was.”

And How To Avoid Them

by: Khera Communications

When you have a small business, it isn’t easy to decide how to price your products and services. There will always be other businesses that are at both ends (high and low) of the pricing spectrum, and sometimes their prices will be same as yours. Small business owners often fall into the pricing trap, and commit some serious mistakes in pricing their products or services. The biggest pricing mistakes that small business commit most often are following: Price matching/undercutting The trend among small business owners is to observe how their competitors are pricing their products or services and then price their services in the same manner. Many small businesses take this concept one step further, and actually reduce their prices as compared to their competitors. This is competitive pricing, and such pricing rarely benefits small businesses, but unfortunately that doesn’t stop them from doing it. The first and most obvious disadvantage of this pricing method is that it eats up your bottom line. So although the sales look good, the profit doesn’t. And there is no guarantee that the sales will look good in the future either. Many people perceive cheap products to be just that – cheap. They believe (rightly or wrongly) that the low price is related to poor quality. Thus instead of increasing sales, you will actually end up losing many of your customers, which may push your profits down even further. You should always try to set your business apart from the crowd, and provide value to your services by charging an appropriate premium for value. People usually do not mind a high price – if you

provide them with value for their money. Focusing on pricing In interactions with your present or your prospective clients, the focus should never be on your prices or the rates. If you decide to go by value pricing, you are actually charging for the value you bring to the service. This value should be the factor that should guide all communication. People understand that when you are providing value, they will have to pay a bit more, and most of them feel good about the concept. You don’t need to focus on the small minority of customers that does not like this. When you can make your prospective clients believe in your company, your services and the value, the price becomes the secondary factor in clinching the deal. You should always focus on these value propositions, and let your client visualize what he/she can expect when they do business with you. Pricing should only come up at later stage, such that your services justify it. Discounting When someone asks for a discount, you should make them understand what they will be getting for the price that they will be paying. While it’s a normal human tendency to ask for discount, and save some money, if you are able to justify the pricing, there is no reason why a genuine client would go away. When you are doing business with a client, the focus should never be on the cost of products or services – at least not right away. Remember that if you provide value, and your costs are in line with the market, your business will do just fine.

Career pointers for young

starting out While the job market appears to be on the mend, recent college graduates know they need to go the extra mile in order to get a foot in the door of their desired profession. Young women with college degrees may face an even more difficult battle than their male counterparts. The earnings disparity between men and women of similar qualifications has long been known and can be traced to a host of factors (for example, men tend to earn degrees in more lucrative fields than women), but women are also facing lower employment rates than men, despite holding an advantage in educational attainment. Young women aware of such figures should rightfully be concerned. While there may be little recent female college graduates can do to address those concerns, there are steps they can take to improve their chances of landing a job in their chosen fields. > Get experience. Any experience in your chosen field, regardless of how small your role might be, is potentially valuable experience. A willingness to tackle any task and get a better grasp of the industry will stand out to a prospective employer, especially if you are currently working as an intern with no promise of a full-time position come the end of your internship. The more you can learn about the industry you hope to work in, the more attractive you become to prospective employers. > Don’t be afraid to take an internship after graduation. Many young people think internships are only valuable while they are in college. But an internship

after you have graduated can be just as valuable, especially in an ultra-competitive job market like the one today’s graduates have found themselves in. Even if the internship won’t earn you a dime, it’s a chance to get your foot in the door and gain experience. Many companies are more inclined to consider past or current interns for full-time entry level positions than they are outside candidates. Don’t be afraid to expand your job search to internships even if you already earned a college degree. Such opportunities might just prove your best chance to get your foot in the door. > Volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to give back, avoid the stir craziness that can accompany unemployment and put something positive on your resume rather than a big gap. In addition, volunteering can be a great opportunity to meet people and do some networking. A fellow volunteer might work in your field or know someone who does, and this person or persons can prove an invaluable resource for a young person just starting out. > Stay focused. A job hunt can be exhausting, and it’s easy for a young unemployed person to grow disillusioned about a process that seems to rely so heavily on randomness. But studies show that young women are already facing an uphill battle when looking for a job, and losing focus or allowing yourself to be discouraged will only make that hill more steep. If you are truly passionate about your field of study and devoted to finding a job within that field, then your chance will come if you remain patient and continue to focus on your job hunt.

entrepreneurs

Starting a business is no small task. But as the 21st century progresses, more and more female entrepreneurs are embracing the challenge of starting their own businesses. Though each entrepreneur has his or her own motivation for starting a business, the chance to be your own boss and turn an idea into a successful business is a driving force for both male and female entrepreneurs. And though male and female entrepreneurs face similar hurdles when starting a business, many female entrepreneurs might be more hesitant to set out on their own, fearing that old stigmas about women in the workplace might affect their chances at success by making potential investors or financial institutions wary of women setting out on their own. The following are a few tips for women looking to start their own business. ~ Seek out a mentor. Many female entrepreneurs have blazed the trail you are about to embark on, and such women can prove an invaluable resource as you begin your journey. Find a female business owner you can connect with and ask her for any advice she can offer. She might not be able to help you with any specifics regarding your business, but

she can very well share stories of what you can expect as a woman setting out to start her own business. ~ Have an airtight business plan. As unjust as it is, a stigma about women in the workplace still exists in the minds of some professionals. This means women must be especially diligent and detailed when creating their business plan. One helpful hint is to act as if you are pitching yourself. Look at your business plan and ask if you would invest in yourself. Ask yourself the questions you would ask a fellow entrepreneur if he or she approached you with the same business plan you just developed. ~ Don’t expect to finance the business entirely on your own. Unless your business is going to be especially small, you’re going to need capital to start your business. If you think you can finance the business on your own, you might want to reconsider. A business loan or investors can help you plan for the unexpected. If you attempt to go it alone, open your business and then find you need a business loan, the lending institution might find your brand has already been damaged and is less likely to succeed. That can make it harder to secure a business loan. Though it’s possible to finance your business entirely out of your own pocket, it never hurts to partner up with a bank or a handful of investors. ~ Rely on your support system. Many women with business experience might feel they need to prove something to themselves when starting their own business and need to do so entirely on their own. While that’s great motivation, underestimating the value of your support system, including your spouse, children and even your mentor, is a mistake. Rely on these people who all want you to succeed, and turn their support into extra motivation.

Coping with

AT THE OFFICE

The workers of the world are working more. So says an annual study of employee benefit trends from MetLife. 40 percent of employees admitted their workload had increased compared with the previous year. While there are many reasons that can account for a heavier workload at the office, heavy layoffs in countries across the globe has, in many instances, left those who weren’t laid off with extra work. And companies might be surprised to know just how much this approach isn’t working.

TheMetLife study also found that 68 percent of employees surveyed reported that the quality of their work had suffered and that fear of losing their jobs played a significant role in how well they did their jobs. While employees might not be able to quell their fears of one day being laid off, there are things they can do to reduce the stress that often accompanies such fears. Stress is a part of most professions and can even be a good motivator. However, when stress is prolonged or excessive, the results can be very unhealthy. Men and women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. When faced with prolonged or excessive stress at the office, men and women can take the following approaches to avoid succumbing to stress. } Determine what is causing the stress. Stress triggers vary depending on the individual, so men and women who are coping with excessive stress should write down anything that causes

them a negative response, whether that response is physical, emotional or mental. After a week, sit down and look at the various things that triggered these negative responses. Choose one and work to resolve it. Determine if there is a way this trigger can be avoided. Do this with each trigger one by one. It might not be possible to successfully address each trigger, but it’s worth the try and it is likely that certain triggers can be successfully avoided. } Manage time effectively. One of the problems with an increased workload is the time in the day to complete that work does not simultaneously increase. This reality makes it easy to become overwhelmed with stress. But a few time management techniques can help. Prioritize certain tasks, ensuring projects that are time-sensitive get done ahead of those that aren’t. When setting a schedule for work, be realistic. If a schedule isn’t realistic, that will only cause more stress. } Maintain a personal life. Effectively managing stress at work involves having a personal life away from the office. All work and no play is a recipe for stress. No matter how big a workload awaits you

at the office, be sure to make time for enjoyable activities away from work. Spend time with friends and family, plan a weekend getaway or simply relax at home. Such time, even if it’s not as often as you might like, makes dealing with stress at the office that much easier to handle. } Remain physically active. Exercise is a great remedy for stress. While research is ongoing, some researchers feel exercise enhances the body’s ability to respond to stress. In addition, exercise seems to give the body practice at dealing with stress. While exercising, the body’s physiological systems are forced to communicate with one another. These same systems must also communicate with one another when responding to stress. Regular exercise helps the body communicate more efficiently, something that helps when the time comes to respond to stress. Stress at the office is likely always going to be a concern for working men and women. However, there are ways to effectively cope with stress no matter how daunting a workload might be.

Coming from Edmonton, after her family had built and opened Tita’s February 27, 2001, she joined her family in Vernon to help run the restaurant in June 2001. Life in the Okanagan was a bit of a shift from the city, things are slower. Until you open the doors of Tita’s, it’s family friendly, warm, inviting & hectic. Just like home. Originally taught to cook by observing her father at his restaurants, including pizza making; she took the initiative to travel and re-learn the art of pizza making in Naples, Italy January of 2010. The family then completed the construction of Little Italy and opened it’s doors to the public July 4th, 2011. Little Italy’s pizza dough is made by Cindy daily & their homemade gelato is made by her brother Danny. Trades program for women

frames new career for apprentice carpenter (NC)—Alyssa Malito translated her passion for working out and being active into a career in carpentry, thanks to a trades program for women. Malito is one of a growing number of women who are completing training programs and entering “non-traditional” careers such as plumbers, electricians, sheet metal workers, carpenters and heavy equipment operators. Malito loved being fit and appreciated the value of handson, hard work. But she wanted more than her job detailing cars at a dealership could offer. She found her true calling participating in the Gateway to the Trades for Women program at Okanagan College. The 12-week course provided practical and theoretical experience in a variety of building trade sectors, giving her the first-hand knowledge required to make an informed decision about which trade to pursue. The program is supported by Industry Training Authority’s (ITA’s) Women in Trades Training (WITT) initiative through funding provided by the Canada – B.C. labour market agreement. The initiative provides training, financial assistance and support for eligible women who might be thinking about a career in the trades, but are unemployed or employed and low-skilled. WITT provided Malito the necessary support and confidence to start a career in the male-dominated field of carpentry. “It helped me experience different trades as well as helped me with funding towards both tools and school,” says Malito. “I love doing something different every day, it’s a great workout and I’m always busy.” The Kelowna resident is now a carpenter apprentice with Maltech Construction, a framing and foundation company where co-workers treat her as “one of the guys” and is now focused on finishing her apprenticeship and getting her Red

Seal certification. It’s estimated more than one million job opportunities will open up in the province between now and 2020 -- and 42% of these will need trades and technical training, according to WorkBC’s BC Labour Market Outlook 2010-2020. For ITA, targeting an under-represented demographic that makes up half the population of BC is a good place to start addressing that gap. In total, more than 2,000 women have benefitted since the initiative was first introduced in 2008/09. There are now approximately 3,500 registered women apprentices in B.C., representing 10% of all registered apprentices. This number includes many of the 2,000 women who have participated in the initiative. The initiative addresses the barriers some women face in entering the trades, including: lack of awareness of skilled trades, training and career opportunities; inability to access childcare; low essential skills; and lack of role models. It is funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement (LMA) and is overseen by the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Malito says working with men all day, every day is a challenge, but Maltech has been supportive. The transition to trades has empowered Her and she hopes to run her own renovation company one day. “Some people think that women don’t belong in trades like carpentry, but that doesn’t bother me,” she says. Her advice to other women considering a career in the trades: “Hard work pays off. Be confident at what you do, stand your ground and prove to everyone that you can do it too.”

INTERVIEW

SKILLS

A job interview can be a nerve-wracking experience for applicants. Those who enter an interview with a host of qualifications may still find themselves nervous at the prospect of discussing a position they’re interested in with a complete stranger. Such nervousness is normal, but many job seekers still hope for ways to make themselves more comfortable when interviewing for a job. There are several ways to do just that, and men and women, both young and old and experienced and inexperienced, should recognize that interviewing takes some dedication and hard work. Resumes do sometimes speak for themselves, but the following tips can go a long way toward helping job seekers make a strong first impression. B Say something before you even open your mouth. Nonverbal communication is an important part of the interview process. Good posture, a firm handshake and making eye contact can set a positive tone at a job interview and makes a strong first impression. When arriving at an office for an interview, don’t slouch in a chair while waiting for the interviewer to arrive. Sit straight up and avoid nervous behavior such as toe-tapping or checking the time. B Be a good listener. Many job seekers have practiced what they’re going to say countless times in the

days leading up to an important interview. Preparation is important, but it’s just as important to listen to the interviewer throughout the interview. Avoid simply waiting your turn to speak before spouting off a rehearsed answer. The interviewer is providing valuable information, which applicants should use in their responses to questions. B Remain professional. Job seekers should always remain professional and avoid coming off as overly familiar. Such an attitude might make it appear as though you aren’t taking the interview seriously and aren’t very interested in the job. Staying too rigid throughout the interview is also not a good way to make a first impression. It’s acceptable to allow the interviewer to set the tone of the interview, but it’s also important to land somewhere between rigidity and being overly familiar. B Be specific when answering questions. Applicants must distinguish themselves from one another. When the interviewer asks a question about a past job experience or project, be specific with your answer. If need be, take time to answer the question. Thoughtfully answering a question is always better than spouting off the first response that comes to mind. B Ask your own questions. At some point during the interview, applicants will be asked if they have any questions for the interviewer. Applicants should always ask questions, which demonstrates interest in the position. Failing to ask a question will likely put an awkward end to the interview. When asking questions, base them on previous statements from the interviewer to show you have been listening and would like to know more about the position and the company.

Traci appreciates her team of professionals … This year I want to take the opportunity to include those women in my business that always seem to go that extra mile. Okanagan Traffic Control provides services to not only construction contractors but have been included in the Winter Carnival parade for several years. These girls find the time to put costumes together, decorate a float and practise a drill that brings smiles to all. We all work many weekends, taking time away from our wonderful, understanding families and often include them in some of our extra events. The longboard skateboard is an event that bring not only our family and friends out but the Canada Day fireworks, the IPE fair parade and not lastly several triathlons. I truly appreciate ALL of my staff and never overlook the fact that without them and several other women in my business, I will have another rewarding year in business due to the team of professionals I can proudly call “the most in demand team of professionals in the Okanagan/ Shuswap.

The plan, recalls Sun-FM Sunrise Show co-host Betty Selin, was to follow her mom and sister into the health care field. Selin’s mom was a nurse, her sister an x-ray lab technician, and, in the mid-1970s, Selin had already been accepted into post-secondary in her native Alberta to become an x-ray technician like her sis. But a friend named David, who lived across the street from Selin’s home in Lacombe, paid a visit. “He was in university in Edmonton studying political science and he was taking a broadcasting course to help him get better at public

speaking,” said Selin, now 55. “He said, ‘You should check out broadcasting. You’d be so good at it.’ I had never considered it.” Selin did check it out, did consider it and has since been very good at her job, recently being named the winner of The Rosalie Award, honouring Canadian women in broadcasting ‘for those who have blazed new trails.’ The honour is named after Rosalie Trombley, a legendary radio music director who launched the careers of a lot of superstars by playing their music, and who had a song written about her by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Bob Seger.

“I had heard of Rosalie before but I didn’t know there was an award named after her,” said Selin. “Some of the other women who have won this award have had national television shows, that kind of recognition. “I’ve just spent my entire career in small and medium markets, and only in the Okanagan.”This comes a year after she was presented with a Regional Television Digital News Director Association’s lifetime achievement award for her 33-year broadcasting career. After being accepted into three broadcast colleges, Selin chose to stay in her home province and attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary. There, she met the love of her life, her future husband Del Selin, and the pair agreed to move to wherever Betty got a job. After an unpaid practicum at CKRD radio and TV in Red Deer, and vacationing in the North Okanagan, Selin decided Vernon looked like a nice place to live, and moved here, with Del, at Halloween in 1979. She then began working the phone, calling Vernon station CKAL-AM 1050 and general manager Wayne Seabrook every week looking for a job. By December, 1979, Selin’s persistance paid off and, in January 1980, she started a full-time gig doing afternoon news. And the only times she has left the station that has morphed into what is now Sun-FM, was for maternity leave after the births of Selin’s daughters, Alanna and Zanna (Selin is also a step-mom to three kids and a

grandmother of three). There really isn’t anything Selin hasn’t done during her 33 years on and off the Vernon airwaves. She has written commercials, done the dreaded all-night on-air shift (when a co-worker got sick), did promotions and spent five years in sales. “I knew if I wanted to be in management, I had to know sales and I planned to be in the sales department for one year. I spent five,” said Selin, “Then I went back into news and I’ve been here ever since.” Selin stopped counting co-workers when the list reached into the hundreds, and she has inpired other women to follow her broadcasting footsteps. She claims she would have been an awful nurse, and she didn’t get into broadcasting for the money. She also didn’t choose broadcasting as a career to win awards, though her office is decorated with honours and certificates of appreciation. “I do it because I love it,” said Selin, still in shock over winning a second straight national honour. “Working in a small market and earning national recognition is fantastic. I hope it encourages more people to start their careers in small markets. You don’t have to work in a large market to have a fabulous career. “Being on the radio just gets in your blood. It’s not even a job, really. It’s kind of who you are. There’s this connection with the community. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Rachelle Dixon Locally made, quality, designer clothing at affordable prices! After celebrating over a decade of business it was time to take a look back to where my dream for Square One started. To fill my store with all my own creations and share my love of fashion with the world. From a home based sewing business to my newest retail location, it has been quite a journey. The first downtown location was open four years. And with the level our own manufacturing growing so has the need for more space. With the purchase of a commercial building, SQUARE ONE APPAREL & SALON moved across 30th Avenue and re-opened in our new space December 2011. With the addition of a fabulous hair salon right in the store, we are now able to dress and style Vernon’s women from head to toe. My new 2013 spring/summer women’s collection is now in full production. Being made right here in our store, there are new items hitting the floor daily. And custom work is my specialty, so if it doesn’t fit the way you like, I will make you one that does. From a full line of athletic/yoga and dance apparel to a bridal gown for that special day, or alterations and repairs to your families existing wardrobe, we are a full service fashion outlet with new fashions each season including a large selection of denim year round. With the difficult times many of us have seen here locally for the last few years a lot has changed, but one thing remains the same … We all still have to get dressed every day so here at Square One we’ve got ‘ya covered! As time has evolved so has the fashion needs of our customers. So as designer I just simply start with beautiful basics … Shall we say! “TAKING IT BACK TO SQUARE ONE” What I love to create and wear myself, comfortable, affordable, beautiful fashions, that I can wear in every aspect of my life. So don’t forget to stop every now and again, and take some time to look and feel beautiful. Because after all…life is like a fashion show, so make sure every step you take, is with your best dressed foot forward!”

Selling in a

slow economy

When the economy is slow, consumers tend to tighten their purse strings. Conservative shoppers may skip big-ticket items or carefully consider each penny they spend. This can make it challenging for businesses to turn over inventory. Any business -- large or small -- may be faced with cyclical periods of slow business. But since the recession fell over the country like a suffocating blanket, some businesses are finding it hard to stay afloat and move merchandise or services. The economic downturn of the last several years has been much more pronounced than those that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. That means fewer people have disposable income to spend, and business owners might need to work extra hard to entice consumers to buy their products. Forget Luxury Very few people are spending money on luxury items these days. Therefore, to be successful you may have to reposition products and services as necessities rather than idle wants. During a recession, consumers may only spend money on necessities or items that will improve their quality of life. Therefore, look at ways to turn your items into must-haves. Convince People of Need Consumers don’t accessorize as much during a recession as they might when the economy is healthy. Instead, they’re looking for the bare necessities or items that will help them down the road, such

as a life insurance policy or a new roof on the house. If yours is an item that may not have immediate worth, try to transform it into a need. A customer may not have to put new tires on his car right now, but stressing how doing so can improve gas mileage while saving money in the long run could be enough to entice customers to buy. Necessary products will enjoy lower income elasticity than luxury items, and you want to cater to this area. Create Other Spending Incentives Deep pricing cuts can be counterintuitive to your business model. Also, it also may alienate customers who think low price indicates poor quality. Rather than slashing prices to entice spending, think about other ways you can make your items more affordable. Some business owners create their own methods of financing or layaway. This enables small payments to be made with the end goal of ownership. There’s also the option of offering an incentive such as “buy one, get one.” Go With a Loss Leader Sometimes the hardest thing is getting people into the store to buy. But research indicates that once customers are in a store, they are likely to purchase something. Some businesses like to advertise with a loss leader. This is essentially a very low price on one item that gets people into the store, where the rest of the items are not on sale. Although it could mean a profit loss on the discounted item, usually it is made up in profits from selling additional items.

Trades program breaks down barriers

Darcy Griffiths

for women

(NC)—Heavy equipment operator Shelley McIntyre says one of the largest obstacles to push aside is the maleskewed stereotype preventing some women from entering into the trades. However, Industry Training Authority’s (ITA’s) Women in Trades Training initiative is helping women overcome these stereotypes and barriers. WITT provides training, financial assistance and support for eligible women who might be thinking about a career in the trades, but are unemployed or employed and low-skilled. It is funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement (LMA) and is overseen by the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Taking the first step in a largely male-dominated field can be daunting. “Having no prior experience it was a personal challenge to put myself out there and get my foot in the door,” she says. Women in Trades Training participants may include: women who are looking for higher paying or more challenging careers; single parents who need to increase their income to support their family; or women who are returning to work after a long stay at home. For McIntyre, it took a car accident for her to switch gears and become a heavy equipment operator. An outdoors type who loved both motorcycling and biking, she chose to move on up to bigger machines. “I like being outside. I like driving the equipment and being part of the team and seeing what I accomplish every day,” says the Nanaimo resident. WITT addresses the barriers some women face in entering the trades, including: lack of awareness of skilled trades, training and career opportunities; inability to access childcare; low essential

skills; and lack of role models in a largely male-dominated field. The support of both ITA’s initiative and her employer, Island Aggregates, made her the competent operator she is today, says McIntyre. “There still are stereotypes. It does get frustrating. However, the help of great instructors and classes, along with a very female friendly workplace, made the learning a lot easier, she adds. It’s estimated that more than one million job opportunities will open up in the province between now and 2020 -- and 42% of these will need trades and technical training, according to WorkBC’s BC Labour Market Outlook 2010-2020. This number includes many of the 2,000 women who have participated in Women in Trades Training programs The transition to trades has empowered McIntyre, who is now focused on finishing her apprenticeship and getting her Red Seal certification. She has some simple advice for women mulling a career switch, “Look into it, do it and follow your heart.”

When men and women find themselves out of work or dissatisfied with their employment, changing careers represents greener pastures and a new beginning. Many people who have successfully changed careers admit the change did them good. But individuals considering a career change should consider a variety of factors before making such a significant decision.

Finances

Those with significant financial flexibility may not need to weigh finances too heavily when considering a career change. Most people, however, need

to determine if they can afford a career change. Men and women with considerable professional experience might find that their past experiences don’t translate to their new desired field of work. In such instances, people should expect to take substantial pay cuts. Those who can afford pay cuts might seamlessly transition to a new career, while those who can’t afford to earn less money may find themselves deeply regretting their decisions. Potential earnings should not be the only factor to consider, but don’t ignore certain financial realities, either.

Career or Company?

A person unhappy with his or her current position might mistake feelings about the company with feelings about the career field itself. If you like your work but feel held back by your company, then you might be better suited to finding new employment within your field instead of switching fields entirely. Thanks to an economy that has struggled considerably over the last half decade, many companies have asked more of their existing employees, leading to employee burnout and dissatisfaction. If your dissatisfaction stems more from the company, be it minimal advancement opportunities or lack of employee appreciation, than from your actual work, then you likely don’t need to change careers but merely companies.

Prospects

Career prospects are another thing to consider before making a career change. The job market has never fully recovered from the recession that began in 2007, and many experienced professionals have been out of work for several years. If your desired field of work is not thriving, then your prospects of finding gainful, rewarding employment might be rather slim. Of course, the economy can still recover down the road and that recovery might open up a wealth of attractive opportunities. But switching careers to a field of work that is struggling financially might not be worth the gamble.

Qualifications

It’s important to consider the necessary qualifications before changing

careers. Some careers only require experience, and your experience in your current field might easily translate into a new line of work. Other careers, however, might have certain requirements with regard to education. In such instances, you might have to go back to school. Your willingness to learn new skills and possibly return to school should weigh heavily in your decision to change careers or to stay put. The decision to change careers is one that individuals make every day. But before that decision is reached, a careful consideration of a host of factors is necessary to ensure the decision is the right one.

to attract

new business

When an economy struggles, consumers tend to tighten their purse strings, affecting businesses big and small. As a result, many businesses look for ways to attract new customers during an economic downturn. Such efforts can make the difference between a business that survives a slow economy and one that’s forced to close its doors. Sales are a traditional way to attract new and old customers, but business owners who want to go beyond sidewalk sales or lower prices can still generate new busi-

ness in a variety of ways. * Go viral. The Internet has enabled even local Mom and Pop stores to make names for themselves across the globe. One of the more unique, not to mention enjoyable, ways to attract new business is to make a viral video. Viral videos can be made by anyone and on devices as simple as camera phones. They are often humorous in nature and shared via social media, and a viral video that features your business can draw attention to your company and create a loyal following among consumers, some of whom might never have heard of your business before.

* Embrace social media. Social media is another great way business owners can attract new customers. Social media creates a direct line between businesses and their customers, something that can create a loyal customer base, especially when business owners solicit customer opinions and respond in ways that let customers know their opinions are valued. Social media can also help businesses make personal connections with potential customers, sharing the stories behind their businesses as well as information about their products. Such personal connections also inspire loyalty among customers and encourage them to spread the word about the businesses. What’s more, the publicity gained via social media is free. * Create your own app. Today’s consumers rely heavily on their smartphones. Many businesses have created their own apps so they are always there for their customers. Apps can make it easier for consumers to buy your products and make it easier for you to inform them of sales or other special events. * Make good use of consumer opinion Web sites. Consumer opinion Web sites have grown incredibly popular over the

years. According to its official blog, Yelp.com, a social networking site in which independent users review businesses ranging from doctors’ offices to restaurants, had more than 70 million unique visitors at the onset of 2012. The site employs a 5-star rating system that allows users to rate businesses on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, 5 being the highest rating possible and 1 being the lowest. Yelp’s research notes that 38 percent of users gave 5-star reviews, while only 12 percent gave 1-star reviews. These numbers indicate that people not only enjoy using Yelp, but also they especially enjoy using it to share positive experiences. Businesses can make use of Yelp and other consumer opinion Web sites by encouraging satisfied customers to share their experiences on the Internet. Businesses can also make use of negative reviews, investigating such reviews and takingsteps to address any issues. Surviving a recession can be difficult for consumers and businesses alike. But businesses can employ several unique tactics to help their ventures survive and grow regardless of the economy.

Sarah McRae Keshiki Gardening is proud to be celebrating over 30 years in business right here in the Okanagan. We are a family run business started by my husband William in 1981 and we have been fortunate enough to work together with out sons who began helping at a very early age and grew up in the landscape industry. They are now off to see the world but my husband and I are so enamoured with the area we have no intention of going very far from home. Our company keeps us very busy 12 months of the year because along with landscaping, irrigation installation/service and commercial grounds maintenance we also do snow removal. Many of our customers have been with us since the very early years of our business. I believe this says a great deal about our service and work ethic. We also happen to love what we do. I feel very fortunate to be able to work outdoors as I really enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. In my spare time I enjoy reading, Zumba and walking with our 15 year old ‘puppy’.

Joy Glastone I have been involved with dogs since I was a young girl at the age of 12 when my father and I bred Irish Setters. I learned to groom in Saskatoon under the guidance of Beth Hardy, which was two years of Joy & Benjamin “Buttons” learning and hard work but well worth it. We have bred and shown purebred registered Shih Tzu dogs for over 30 years and I am a life member of the Canadian Kennel and Vernon Kennel Clubs. Our goal is to continue our great service. I, along with husband Stewart and employee Kassandra Stasiuk, care for our clients and their beloved pets! I love my career. I groom for the love of dogs.

g n i t o m o r P SS YOUR BUSINE Once established, you will have some personal or mandatory goals to meet. Having a successful direct sales business can be challenging. It is unrealistic to expect buyers to flock to you as soon as you put the words “consultant” after your name. You will have to do some work and expend energy getting your business message out and following up for sales. Here are some ways you can slowly, and effectively, advertise your business. * Put an e-mail signature on your account so that any message you send will have your business information attached to it. * Join any “work from home” or “moms’ groups” you can through social media sites. Follow the rules regarding how many times you can mention your business and continually get the word out. * Start a blog and talk about various things, including your business.

Brenda Gedaschke

Brenda Gedaschke is the New owner of Harris Flower Shop which was purchased in the end of October last year. Harris Flowers has been operating for over seventy years in Vernon, we are located in the heart of downtown Vernon at 3118 - 30th Ave. We share the storefront with Simply Baskets Home & Gift, which we have owned for just over seven years. Brenda’s background is in design and has been the display and decor coordinator for the Village Green Center for the last six years, floral design is another fabulous creative aspect of her design abilities. Harris Flowers prides themselves with their customer service and one on one consultations with clients when planning the important events in their lives. We have fresh flowers arriving weekly a great selection of gifts for both the home and garden, we truly are a one stop shop! Take a few minutes and checkout the website or our Facebook page for more details on this very unique flower and gift shop! Brenda Gedaschke is also the owner of Simply Baskets Home and Gifts where they offer the very best in Country primitive home decor, gifts & gift baskets. We have just expanded our gift Basket selections to included Cookies & Milk Gift Packs.

You want individuals to be interested and visit your blog, but don’t use the blog as a digital billboard. * In a similar vein, become an online author. Write about topics that pertain to your business. The more your name is out there and the more your site is linked to other Web sites, the greater your exposure. * Figure out a profitable target market, and then develop a plan to reach these people. * Think about working in conjunction with other direct sales people you aren’t competing against. For example, exchange business cards with other individuals. Use these as “bag fillers” for your party guest orders or party takeaways and have the others do the same. This provides free advertising for both of you. * Register to become a vendor at a local job fair. While you won’t be selling products, you will be enticing potential recruits. There are many ways to get your direct sales business started. After you start making sales and recruiting, open communication and follow-ups will help keep your success going strong.

Simply Baskets

At Simply Baskets Home & Gift we pride ourselves in our attention to detail, our fabulous customer service, our loyalty programs and membership rewards. We have gifts for everyone on your list, and decor for every room in your home. Christmas at Simply Baskets Home & Gift is truly magical, you are surrounded by the tastes, sounds and scents that will take you back to the Christmas’s you remember. Operating for seven years, we are located in the heart of downtown Vernon at 3118 - 30th Ave. We share the storefront with Harris Flowers, which we purchased in the end of October last year. Born and raised in Vernon, Brenda enjoys spending time with her husband Walt Gedaschke, two daughters, a fabulous son in-law and three, soon to be four beautiful grandchildren. If you haven’t been to Harris Flowers or Simply Baskets Home & Gift, take some time and to pop in and say “Hi”. Brenda and the girls will love to see you! Two great stores, one easy location!

Now almost 35 years later she is growing asparagus (across the road from where she grew up) with her husband Mark. This year Corinne and her husband Mark are celebrating 16 years of growing asparagus. Their first harvest (in 1997) lasted only 10 days and was sold on the honor system. Customers bagged and weighed their own asparagus and made change in an ice cream bucket. Today the farm (store) is set up to take you back in time with antiques and old photos of Armstrong and Spallumcheen. Building a business

Wardrobe

The transition from college student or stay-at-home mom to fulltime professional requires a number of changes. Those changes include updating your wardrobe to give it a more professional feel. Clothing that’s acceptable for a jaunt to the store or a night out may not be appropriate for the office. Just what constitutes a professional wardrobe has changed over the years, and the guidelines for such attire are no longer as firm as they once were. But it still behooves a woman to add some classic, professional pieces to her closet. While skirts and pantyhose may no longer be mandatory, dressing conservatively and cleanly in an office environment is always a safe bet. In order to achieve a wardrobe transformation without breaking the bank, the fashion experts at Marie Claire advise adding separates

to build around a base suit. Find a suit that is flattering to your figure and make it a workplace staple. Then purchase coordinating pants, sweater sets, shirts, another skirt, and accessories that can be mixed and matched with elements from the suit to create different looks. If your budget allows, purchase another suit in a different color so you can continue to build wardrobe possibilities. When selecting base pieces, opt for neutral colors of tan, gray, black, and blue so that these items can be worn repeatedly without being noticed. Accessories and blouses can offer pops of color when necessary. A nice handbag or pair of shoes can quite easily add color to an otherwise monotone ensemble.

Many employers have adopted dress-down days as perks for their employees. Although you may be invited to dress more casually, avoid dressing for a day at the beach or hanging around the house. Opt for trouser-style jeans that are free of rips and embellishments. If athletic shoes are allowed, make sure they are clean and not the pair you wear while tending to your garden. Avoid graphic T-shirts that feature potentially offensive or suggestive messages. In more conservative companies, dressing down may be opting for khakis instead of suits. It is important to know the difference. Women who are adding to their wardrobes can include these alltime business staples.

When selecting items from the rack, look for those that fit well but aren’t too constrictive or racy. Inquire with your new employer’s hiring manager or human resources department to find out if the workplace has any restrictions on wardrobe. There may be employee guidelines, particularly in certain industries, such as law or education. If no such restrictions are in place, keep skirts to knee-length and avoid particularly low-cut tops. Save more revealing items for nights out with friends.

* Classic black pump shoes * Crisp, button-down white shirt * Fine-knit sweater in a bright color * Camisole or shell in a neutral color to wear under blazers * Cardigan in black or white that can be worn over tops or dresses * Fitted, sleeveless dress that can be paired with a suit jacket or cardigan * Straight-hemmed skirt in a neutral color * Flat-front black, gray and tan pants * Neutral-colored wool coat and a rain jacket Over time, women can add to their wardrobes as budgets allow and they learn more about what is acceptable at their places of hire.

Mary Zamniuk We at Wiggle Waggle have a formula: Puppies capture your heart (like RJ in the photo), Mid-life dogs own your heart, Old dogs will break your heart. Mary and Lyle established Wiggle Waggle Pet Hotel nine years ago as an alternative to traditional kennels. We provide a unique concept of a canine-friendly, kennel free, private pet playground. The playground is over 1 acre, and offers a treed area, swimming pools and doghouses. Dogs live and play together in a pack, providing the essential socialization that dogs often lack these days. Dogs can freely access outdoor space or indoor daycare space. Our daycare area offers comfort and calm. Dogs can snooze, listen to quiet music, or just meet and greet a new friend. The owners and staff are always on site, supervising the dogs 24 hours a day. We happily accommodate special diets and medical needs. For more details, go to www.wigglewagglepethotel.com. Good benefits keep your employees

healthy and happy

(NC) – Many small businesses make it hard on themselves when it comes to recruiting and keeping good employees. Take the question of group health benefits for example: many entrepreneurs fail to offer their employees benefits because they misunderstand the costs. “Having a good benefit plan is often extremely important to employees,” says John Jenner, the vice president of marketing and communications at Western Financial Group. “There are many different ways to structure a plan to make sure it is both affordable and easy to administer.” Even small businesses can usually

afford to offer group benefits, says Jenner, because purchasing through a group plan reduces the costs to individual plan members. Plans can include a wide variety of benefits including short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, health and dental benefits, as well as travel insurance and group critical illness benefits. Health spending accounts can offer even greater flexibility for both employers and employees. “In the competitive workplace, smart businesses need to recognize that offering group benefits can often be the difference between keeping or losing a good employee.”

Linsey Postill Johannson R.E. Postill & Sons Ltd. has been family owned and operated for over 69 years. Founded in 1944 by Linsey’s Great-Grandfather, Russell Eugene, the company is now owned by Linsey and her husband Jamie. The business offers a complete line of quality gravel products, trucking and delivery, and both residential and commercial site servicing and preparation. Although the equipment and variety of work has changed over the last 69 years, the same solid values run the company today. R.E. Postill & Sons Ltd. is committed to giving back to the community and supporting local projects, believing this is a fundamental part of a successful small business. Linsey learned all about the family business from her father, Brian. She ran a loader in the pit and drove a gravel truck doing deliveries during summer breaks from school. After graduating from the University of Alberta with a degree in Pharmacology, Linsey moved home to Coldstream and she and Jamie started in the business full time. They now have a three year old son, Ty and look forward to welcoming their second child in July. As a family they enjoy all that the Okanagan offers, hiking, swimming and skiing. For the future, Linsey and Jamie will carry on the family tradition of providing Vernon and area with quality gravel products, efficient service and honest hard work to ensure the job is done well and the customer is always happy.

Negotiating a salary increase

For most of today’s workers, simply having a job is something to be grateful for. With an unemployment rate still hovering around roughly 7.6 percent in Canada, it’s hard to question workers who are simply content to be among the gainfully employed. For some, however, the need to start gaining more is growing. In the past, yearly salary increases were normal. However, in recent years salaries have begun to flatline, at least for lower- or middle-income workers. For many, the prospect of working without the prospect of a pay raise is difficult to fathom. Workers who managed to keep their jobs during the recession took on more work as a result and could feel the time for financial recognition has come. To those hoping to negotiate a salary increase, consider the following approach. $ Do your homework. Workers might feel they have a firm grip on their value in the marketplace, but that’s not always the case. If necessary, consult an executive search firm to determine your true worth. Employees who have been with the same company for several years are often pleasantly surprised to learn their value in the marketplace. When researching your value, examine compensation surveys and utilize resources such as newspaper classified sections or online job boards. This will paint an accurate picture of what the job market is like. $ Consider adding more responsibility. Simply put, the more valuable you are to your company the more likely they are to meet your salary demands. Pursue any ways you can become more valuable to your company before discussing a salary increase. Propose ideas on new projects or offer to help other depart-

ments when possible. Many of today’s companies are unders t a ff e d because of the struggling economy. The more hats you can wear for your company, the more valuable you will be and the more likely you can receive a raise. $ Don’t be afraid. A growing mentality among today’s workers is to simply be happy to have a job. While that’s understandable in light of high unemployment rates across the globe, that attitude won’t help you get a raise and should not keep you from requesting one. Employers recognize the cost of hiring and training your replacement is likely substantially more than meeting your salary demands, especially if you have been with the company for years. If you have truly earned a raise, don’t be afraid to ask for one. $ Don’t be threatening. Some workers feel they must present their employer with an ultimatum when requesting a raise. Terms like “or else” or “if I don’t get a raise” should never be brought up in a salary negotiation. If the company truly cannot afford to meet your salary demand, you will have painted yourself into a difficult position. What’s more, the company likely won’t respond well to threats and might deny your request simply because of that. When negotiating a salary increase, be assertive but non-threatening. $ Be specific. It doesn’t hurt to be specific, both with a figure and a timeframe you expect to hear a decision. If you’re open-ended, you’re likely to get less money (and appear ungrateful or unhappy if you then request more) and the company might take its time considering the request.

Occupations such as firefighting, trucking, and auto repair are increasingly practiced by women.

Auto mechanics, like many other typically male trades, has seen sparse representation by women up to now. But contrary to many young men, who often take up the trade for lack of other ideas, plenty of women are actually passionate about it. There are more than a few women who have proved their stuff in the military’s vehicle shops, for example. Nevertheless, for them and all the others like them, it takes a lot of courage and determination to be taken seriously, and they can encounter prejudice even today. Women wanting to become auto mechanics are good problem solvers, and they are dynamic and tenacious as well. They love to take things apart and put them back together again, and the challenge of convincing male coworkers of

their expertise is a motivation to excel. At the local auto service centre, women mechanics might have to make a special effort to reassure prejudiced clients that they are competent and efficient, but once their work speaks for itself, there is little to hold them back! This will change with time, as more women put on the overalls and show the world that they are skilled with motors and electrical systems. Other skills required for mechanics are a mastery of car electronics, an analytical and technical mind, and an ability to communicate with clients about their automotive needs. Women who are passionate about this trade and who are ready for the challenge of proving themselves to be skilled will enjoy their work and meet with success.

accounts and stay current with business news and issues that may play a direct or indirect role on your finances. * Get talking about your concerns. Talk to other women in similar situations. You may find that you share the same concerns. Discussing common concerns or financial strategies can help you in your own endeavors.

Address your financial concerns

& take control of your finances The roles played by women have changed dramatically over the years. Modern women now wear many hats, one of which is money manager. That’s true for women managing their personal finances or those overseeing their family’s finances. But managing finances can be intimidating for anyone, regardless of gender. A great first step is to identify any concerns you have about money. Being able to pinpoint the particulars will help you develop a plan of action. For example, if you want to invest in stocks but don’t know a bull from a bear market, acknowledging this shortcoming can help you learn the necessary facts to get started. Once such concerns have been addressed, you’re likely to feel more comfortable and confident about managing your money and can start taking steps to do just that. * Think positively and value your strengths. Embracing your strengths, even if those strengths have little to do with money management, can help you gain control of your finances. Perhaps you are not a financial whiz but your networking skills have left you with a vast network of friends and family in various professions. You may be able to use those connections to gain access to experts in the financial field who can guide you through the questions you may have. * Know your current financial status. Feigning ignorance is not the way to get started. It is important to honestly assess your financial situation so you can effectively handle those finances going forward. Take stock of your income, expenditures and what you have in savings. Keep abreast of any changes in your

* Continue working, even if it’s only part-time. A study by the Women’s Institute For a Secure Retirement found that a college-educated 25-year-old female will earn $500,000 less than a male counterpart in a similar position over her lifetime because of sporadic employment associated with caring for family, including children and aging parents. That worries many young women who have previously thought about taking time off from work to raise families. Even if you may want to scale down your work schedule, you may not want to completely remove yourself from the workforce so you can remain in touch and current. * Consult with an estate planner. The earlier you start the better off you will be with regard to planning for the future. It is not an admission of weakness if you rely on the help of financial experts to guide you in the right direction.
