Library, LKB team up to raise profile

ARES earns provincial award for work with Cresteramics BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

“I recognize that First Nations people have a significance to Canada, B.C. and Creston that is greater than just their numbers,” said Aaron Francis, Creston and District Public Library’s chief librarian. “The Lower Kootenay Band has a deep history and culture in the Creston Valley, and we’re right in the middle of it. We want to celebrate that we are Lower Kootenay Band’s library. We have an obligation and I want to ensure band members see they are represented here.” To further his aim, Francis contacted LKB Chief Jason Louie and asked what the library could do to build a deeper relationship and show band members they have a connection to the regional facility. “Then Misty (Louie) came forward and took the initiative,” he said. “She applied for an LKB economic development grant and convinced the LKB council to support her.” Misty Louie, who last year completed a five-year stint in the U.S. Air Force, and who remains in the air force reserve, will be working part-time, 16 hours a week, on the program until she leaves to further her education in Seattle. She plans to become a nurse. See LIBRARY, page 5

A unique community partnership has earned an award for the way it develops relationships and understanding between elementary school students and adults with developmental disabilities. Cresteramics, which provides day programs for the latter, and Adam Robertson Elementary School have a partnership that goes back nearly a decade, Grade 2/3 teacher Maria McLean said last week. “The program with ARES has been a wonderful part of Cresteramics community inclusion program for the last several years,” according to Donna McCready, who directs Cresteramics. “Three developmentally delayed adults have been attending classes with grade 2 and 3 students. While at first there was some hesitancy from both the students and visiting adults, this was quickly overcome. The clients from Cresteramics now await their visits to ARES eagerly each week.” McCready was in Vancouver last week to accept an award from the BC Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association, a recognition that the adult-student relationships have provided clear benefits for all involved. NEW HOME — Judah Baruta, with the help of his dad, Luke, places a juvenile stur-

geon in the Kootenay River. About 2,400 10-month-old white sturgeon were released — 1,000 by the public, 1,400 by 400 schoolchildren — on May 8. Part of a plan to help revitalize the endangered species, the event is co-ordinated by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program. Out of every 1,000 sturgeon released, about 180 will still be alive after 12 years. More information and photos at www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca/news.

Ramada makes it possible for Creston to host 2014 AKBLG conference BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

In 2014, for the first time, Creston will host the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments annual conference. “This is good indication of what kind of conference business Creston is now getting after the opening of the Ramada inn and conference centre,” Mayor Ron Toyota said on Monday. Scheduled for April 9-11, 2014, the AKBLG event will force the Creston Valley Home and Garden Show to be moved next year, something Toyota was grateful for. “When I contacted Jim Jacobsen (chamber of commerce executive director) about this last week he worked quickly to move the home and garden show up by a week for 2014,” he said. The AKBLG conference brings together several hundred local government elected officials and staff for three days of working sessions, presentations and meals and coordinating the logistics will be a joint effort of the Town of Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay Area A, B and C directors. Toyota said he hopes to offer a distinct local

flavour for the entire event, involving the Lower Kootenay Band and local entertainers. Tours could be offered to local industries and attractions. Town staff and elected officials attended the recent AKBLG conference in Invermere, keeping a close eye on how the event functioned and meeting to discuss how Creston could handle, and improve on, the conference. “I’m pleased that the Creston Valley is now in a position to host larger conferences,” Toyota said, adding that another large regional event is scheduled for in the coming months. “It gives us an opportunity to showcase what we have to offer and benefits all of our local businesses.”

Ongoing dispute may lead to mischief charges BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

After months of seeing his detachment members dealing with an ongoing neighbours’ dispute on Erickson Street, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan has had enough. “I have assigned one of our officers to looking into recommending charges of public mischief against these two men,” he said on Monday. Creston RCMP dealt with more complaints from the battling pair last week, two of them made

from one who called on consecutive days to complain about early morning noise. An investigation revealed the neighbor was using firecrackers to scare skunks away from the rabbits he raises. A third call, on May 8, reported a neighbour cutting tree branches down along the property line. Attending police officers could find no evidence to support the complaint. Gollan said that mediation attempts have been unsuccessful, and public mischief charges might be the only way to stop the feud and its resulting drain on police resources.

In addition to her duties in overseeing those projects, Louie will work three hours each week at the front desk, welcoming patrons and checking out their materials. She will also present an information session about the library to the Lower Kootenay Band. Francis said he is committed to finding ways to keep Lower Kootenay culture and history alive. The band has a presence in

the Creston Valley for at least 10,000 years and the Ktunaxa language is unique, a rare standalone language that had no outside influences as it was formed. Much of the Lower Kootenay Band’s history, culture and folklore have been carried on through its storytelling tradition. “I hope we can explore the bigger question about how to share this knowledge and information that isn’t in a conventional form,” he said. “Lower Kootenay people are keepers of the deepest knowledge of this place we live in.”

Yahk Settlement Road. May 12 •Nobody was home on Riley Road when police responded to a 911 call. •A driver who cut a corner too short on Highway 3 and lost control of his vehicle, which rolled over, refused medical attention. His vehicle was a write-off. •There were no injuries but extensive damage was reported when a driver on Lower Wynndel Road lost control on a corner. •A bear had to be put down after it collided with a vehicle on Arrow Creek Road. The vehicle sustained extensive damage.

Vet’s protest of confidentiality unintentionally amuses

A news item on CBC Radio last Monday kept me smiling for days. To be fair, it wasn’t intended to be a funny story. A man complained that he had taken his ailing dog to the vet, who said the animal could be suffering from bone cancer, a diagnosis that could only be confirmed with a bone biopsy. The owner consented. Later, he got a call that the biopsy confirmed the presence of cancer. The vet had gone ahead and amputated the leg, said the dog still had cancer and would live only several months longer, then presented him with a bill for about $1,000. The owner was furious because he hadn’t consented to the surgery and his dog will spend its last few months healing from the amputation. Not much value for his thousand bucks. Given the option, he said, he would have requested that the animal be euthanized. The story saddened me even though I am not an animal lover. I do not now, and never have, understood the need or desire to keep a member of another species for my own amusement. Not that I dislike animals. My son’s family has a wonderful dog that is amazing with our grandchildren and I am happy to greet it and pet it when we visit. But if we arrived at the home one day and the dog wasn’t there I’d have the same emotional reaction as if a table lamp was missing. Or maybe

Somehow, the reporter passed on this tidbit of information without so much as a quaver in his voice. I nearly drove my truck off the road. and helpful with dog and people, as we had a shock, too. After the X-ray was done, you could see that the dog had a spinal fracture, and an open bone fracture between the knee and ankle. We could only guess what could have happened to him. We thought he could have been caught in a trap for coyotes or stuck between two tree trunks and twisted his leg or he got hit on the highway. But there were no other injuries like road rash to see. But a week ago, my husband told a friend what happened and that our dog is in the clinic with a broken leg. He said, “I know what happened to your dog,” and gave my husband the phone number of a witness, so we could call him to hear the story ourselves. The witness was driving home from Creston toward Yahk, as he saw a big white dog, standing in the middle of the Highway 3 near our property. The truck that was driving in front of him should have seen the dog as well. He drove fast, no braking light was flashing, and he made no shift to avoid the dog or stop after he hit him. How disrespectful can a human be? Well, I would not call that person human! It scares me a lot, knowing that those people live in my neighborhood. They scare me more than hungry bears in spring on our property. I just hope I never have to face them. It makes me sick, as I realized there is no way to make them stand up for acting like that. I know it is my responsibility to have my dogs under control. Regardless, it is a shame that people can do such things and nobody can

stop them — not even the police can help you, because there are no laws for such issues! I’m a driver myself and I know how dangerous it is with animals or wildlife crossing the highway. abut the brain has been learned in that past two years. Your brain is always working; even when you sleep, the little custodians are cleaning up the debris and detritus that accumulated over the course of the day and flushing them out, which is why a good solid sleep between seven and nine hours is one of the top four items in protecting the egg. The other top items to avoid are unpredictable stress — of course, we all have stresses which in some cases benefit your health, but the ones where your brain is always on “high alert” or “waiting” are the bad ones. We also know the sedentary lifestyle is nothing but bad and we push that here incessantly — do something; as long as you are active, you are benefitting yourself. Did you know that even sleeping burns more calories than staring slack-jawed at the TV? Finally, and you knew this was on the list, is diet and there is more information out there about what you should and shouldn’t be eating that I can’t sum it up in a few sentences. I certainly can’t condense two hours of learning into my allotted space but a final study Terry Small referred to was how music is very beneficial for our brain health and through research, they even identified baroque music as the best overall. I believe I still have my sweatshirt that says “I’m baroque because I have no Monet.” Have a good weekend! Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

To the Editor: First, I know it is my fault that our dog got hit on the Highway and I’m deeply sorry for my boy. We learned our part; therefore, we are in the process of fencing in our yard better. Second, I would do anything for my dogs because they are family. I’m absolutely not an aggressive person, but at this point I have no understanding nor a good thought left for people like the one who hit my Pax! On March 27, about 6:45 p.m., my husband called our dogs home because he could not see them. He realized they went down to the highway. Usually they obey and stay around the house. Everything happened in seconds: My husband called and in the same heartbeat he heard Pax, a five-year-old snow white Maremma sheepdog, howling and crying. I was in the kitchen as he yelled, “Quick, quick! something happened to Pax!” I ran as fast as I could to see what happened as I saw my boy limping toward me and then lying down, his eyes open wide in shock and pain. Half an hour later, we were in the vet clinic to get Pax the care he needed. Dr. Emma and Melissa were so patient

Liberal, NDP signs stolen around valley To the Editor: My husband and I were pretty disturbed early Saturday morning to discover that overnight not only was the political sign we had in our yard gone, but all through Lister, up Erickson Road and through Canyon all the NDP and Liberal signs had been stolen. The only signs remaining were the Green Party signs. (A possible clue?) There is a huge fine for anyone disturbing political advertising and if anyone sees these signs or knows of who did this, please report their names to the police. What’s happened to our democracy? spectives. A couple of weeks ago, my family and I drove up Kootenay Lake to attend the Riondel Community Library open house. The volunteers there do a wonderful job of keeping the library stocked with new titles and we hope to support them in any way we can. Every month, I try to get out to Family Place and First Steps daycare to present a special story time for the young ones. I’ve always believed that being around and engaging young folks helps keep me feeling young, too. Spending time in the community, talking to people and supporting other community organizations are not just great excuses to get out of the office. They are necessary to ensuring that we are responding to what this community really wants and needs. I believe in the “community-led” approach to librarianship. This means that the community identifies its information needs, and library staff and the community work together collaboratively to create and deliver programs and services. It means that, when it comes to community needs, you are the expert, not me. And it means that this library will be unique because this community is unique. We will evolve in different ways than the Cranbrook, Nelson or Vancouver public libraries. Now, if I could only find a way to spend the day at the beach and call it working, life would indeed be perfect! Aaron Francis is the chief librarian at the Creston and District Public Library.

Public buildings need address posted

To the Editor: We go to Rotacrest Hall to play crib every Wednesday evening. There was an incident recently where a senior needed an ambulance. I called 911 and was asked what the proper street address was. I did not know and when I asked the other 30-plus people in the hall, they were unsure of the address also. I was speaking to a 911 operator who would not dispatch an ambulance until he knew the proper street address. I was on a landline so when I have him the number, he could then get the address of the hall, and the ambulance was dispatched. I would like to make people aware that if you are in a public place, the proper street address should be posted for all to see, along with the 911 number. Gail Johnston Canyon

Anger does more harm than good, covers emotions that we’re really feeling

The definition of anger given in my trusty Funk and Wagnalls dictionary is: A feeling of sudden and strong displeasure and antagonism directed against the cause of an assumed wrong or injury.

out being them, we can start paying attention to what they are saying. And by watching the thoughts that arise in our minds during the emotion, we can discover the ideas and images upon which it is based. Sometimes this can be a truly profound experience! I personally used to react with anger when faced with a comment like, “Oh, that’s a man’s job.” I’d immediately heatedly retort that a woman could do it just as well! Where did that anger come from? It took me a while to realize that I had been told in my early teens that education would be wasted on me since I would just get married anyway. I guess being the only girl in my family (six older brothers!) and being a Leo, I really resented the inference that I was less important to this world than a man. Now that I’ve dealt with that reason for my anger and know that within I’m OK, I can laugh at such a comment instead of getting all upset. Here are a couple of words of wisdom that I’ve come across over the years: “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the container in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” “We arm those we hate with the energy of our anger; so it is not they who conquer us, but we ourselves.” That dictionary definition is bang on, isn’t it? Mary Underhill is a stress therapist and grief counsellor.

The Voice of

Experience Mary Underhill To me, the key word here is “assumed”, for we tend to blame others and their words or actions for the anger we feel, when, in reality, we are often reacting to an inner sensitivity that has built up within us from some previous situation(s). The subconscious mind remembers everything! To quote from Adult Children: The Secrets of Dysfunctional Families: “For many of us, this (anger) is the only emotion. For others, it’s the only one we don’t allow ourselves. Anger is paradoxically frightening and liberating. It can be a deceptive con, a trick to hide all other emotions. It can get us out of a jam quicker than anything else. It relieves us of responsibility. … It can make us feel right whether we’re right or wrong.” We need to always remember that anger is a secondary emotion, covering up some other emotion such as fear, shame, guilt or hurt. Looking behind our anger for that other emotion can be scary, but also freeing if we investigate a bit. When we can feel emotions with-

Young staff members contribute greatly to seniors program

In October 2012, the College of the Rockies and Columbia Basin Trust offered a new opportunity for agencies like the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors to hire students to work in our programs. We were very happy to welcome Brittany as a member of our team in February. Not Terry Nowak only did she share her computer skills with us, she shared her patience, gentleness and beautiful smile. Brittany looked after jobs that Bridget just didn’t have time to do. Song sheets for Tarts and Tunes, our monthly activity calendar, photo albums, scrapbooks and music for exercise work outs were a few of the jobs she did for us. Taking over these tasks made it possible for Bridget to spend more time with the seniors. Brittany served meals, cleaned tables and washed dishes, all with a smile. Her excellent computer skills were well received. She helped me with my iPhone more times than I care to admit. Brittany’s patience was not just with Bridget and me but also with the seniors she taught computer skills to. She had regular students, most over 75 years of age, who learned basic skills and some more advanced techniques. One senior was able to make email contact with family she had lost touch with. This is something that would not have happened without Brittany. Brittany has moved away and we are just realizing how much we counted on her to keep things happening smoothly. We wish her well

in her new endeavours. TAPS has been approved for a Canada Summer Jobs student and we are currently looking for another young person to share their skills and enthusiasm with seniors. We will be advertising in the Advance, so watch for our ad. I have often written about how we depend on our partnerships that make it possible for seniors to remain independent, contributing members of their community. Again, I want to acknowledge and thank the Creston Valley Gleaners Society, which has donated large quantities of food to us. The food it gives us is used in our meals, reducing our costs in this area, and shared with seniors who are able to use the food in their own homes. We are aware that TAPS is often the recipient in many of the partnerships we are involved in, but this weekend we will be assisting the Lions at the Creston Valley Blossom Festival. TAPS is responsible for the 11th Avenue street fair and we hope to see you there! Terry Nowak is an outreach worker with Creston’s Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

We are so lucky in the valley to have an abundance of incredible talent — everything from theatre and music to the visual arts. Since May 4, valley residents and visitors have had the chance to see a wide variety of the wonderful art produced by local artists. “Different Strokes” is the title of the display at the Creston and District Public Library and different it is! Viewers will be able to see mosaics by Shelagh Corcoran, bark carvings by Harry Miller, painted fabric by Emmie Roelofse, encaustics by Fran Morrison, sculptural pieces by Paul Dawson and jewelry by Cherie Rensing. This is a wonderful display that runs until June 29. Variety is also what will be available at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce with a fabulous display by the members of the Creston Art Club. You name the medium and you will probably find it in this exhibit: acrylics, oils, watercolours, coloured pencil, mixed media — the list could go on but you get the idea. The art will also cover a wide variety of subjects and styles from abstract to traditional. Over 20 artists will have their art on display in the hall at the chamber and the glass cabinets will have the wonderful silk fabric art of Linda Bullock. The display at the chamber ends on June 1. The art in these exhibits is for sale so you can decorate your home or office, buy a special gift and support the local artists too. These community art displays are sponsored by the Community Arts Council of Creston, The Creston Public Library and the Creston Chamber of Commerce. Each exhibit is around eight weeks long and will showcase local artists from Yahk to Riondel. If you would like to see your art displayed at one of these venues next year, contact Val at 250-866-5772.

This safety reminder brought to you by

Festival promises fun-filled long weekend BY HUGH JOHNSTON

Boy, time sure flies when you are having a good time. It is Creston Valley Blossom Festival time again, and once again the residents of the Creston Valley are gearing up for their annual funfest. From May 17-20, residents and visitors can look forward to four solid days of fun for the whole family. It all begins on Friday evening with the stage show starring internationally-known Juno Award-winning comedian and musician Al Simmons. Local favourite Daniel Huscroft will kick off the show. Also on the program will be the muchawaited citizen of the year presentation put together by the Rotary clubs of Creston. Local politicians will also step forward in a group to officially kick off the 72nd edition of the Creston Valley Blossom Festival. Tickets are on sale now at Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce office, Black Bear Books and at the door. The Blossom Festival really goes into full bloom on Saturday. Led by the former members of Citizens on Patrol, the parking lot at Prince Charles Secondary School becomes a beehive of activity as the final preparations for the mammoth parade take

place. Spots have to be marked for the various floats, bands, vehicles, dignitaries, clowns and animals. The volunteers start at daylight and work right up to parade time at 11 a.m., when the Royal Canadian Army Cadets pipe band leads the parade down Canyon Street for the journey to Overwaitea Foods, where it terminates. The parade is probably the largest single event of the Blossom Festival. One of the highlights of this year’s parade is the team of Clydesdales pulling a tradition-

al wedding buggy, which should make quite a sight. The good folks at Fort Steele outside Cranbrook are bringing the horses, buggy and crew to Creston. The parade takes about an hour to pass any given point, and the streets, sidewalks will be lined with onlookers. Entrants with floats come from both sides of the border. The Lions Club has two events on Saturday. From 7-11 a.m. next to Sunset Seed Co., the Lions will be serving their signature breakfast. For $5. you get two pan-

cakes, two sausages, two fried eggs, juice and coffee. Proceeds will be used to finance Lions projects in the community. Just north of Canyon Street on 11th Avenue, the Lions Club street fair will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Exhibitors from across B.C. will join local vendors, featuring a variety of items on sale. Proceeds will be split between the Lions Club and the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors. The 16th Avenue Experience is back with a variety of things taking place. At the College of the

Daniel Huscroft Al Simmons headlining performing at opening ceremony show festival opening BY HUGH JOHNSTON

BY JOANNA WILSON Singer, songwriter and guitarist Daniel Huscroft will open the Creston Valley Blossom Festival evening ceremonies on Friday at Prince Charles Theatre. His voice will be familiar to many, as Creston is his hometown. He is currently taking a break from life in the city. Huscroft recently gave a wellreceived performance at the Snoring Sasquatch, where he

displayed diverse vocal powers and lyrical songwriting ability. “It is nice to captivate the audience with just the acoustic thing,” he said. An acoustic set incorporating country and blues sounds will feature a new song, Summer Nights, inspired by the Creston Valley. “It will be just me and my guitar, doing songs recently recorded with friends,” said Huscroft.

The Creston Valley Blossom Festival has brought in a variety of excellent entertainers over the last 71years, but this year’s show will definitely be different. Finding the right words to describe it will be quite a challenge. It isn’t the first time that a comedian has entertained the overflow crowd — remember the antics of the ventriloquist-magician-comedian a few years back? So just who is Al Simmons? He could have been born at the turn of the century. The modern day comedy chameleon would have felt right at home beside vaudeville kings Milton Berle, Red Skeleton and Jimmy Durante. In those days, performers would treat audiences to musical comedy routines with song, dance, jokes, magic tricks and sight gags. A creative genius with the soul of a vaudevillian, Simmons continues the tradition of the comedy greats. He is a wizard of one-liners, quick costume changes, out-of-this-world theatrical props, peculiar musical instruments and other assorted gadgets. Like his predecessors, Simmons’ constantly changing performance style cannot be pigeonholed. In concert, Simmons is a one-man cast of thousands. Make an appointment with Dr.

Although their organization has decided to disband, when they heard that the festival still needed their input for the parade, they stepped forward to ensure that the parade would go on. Over the years, this hard working group has gotten out of bed before 6 am on parade day to place their numbered milk bottles in the parking lot behind the high school. This painstaking task is vital in ensuring that the parade is in a well organized order. Everything runs on a time table, and C.O.P.S. always gets it done. Creston Valley Advance Thursday, May 16, 2013 From page B4 Amazingly lifelike Ma and Pa puppets come alive at the breakfast table and shout, “I want a pancake!” And something’s definitely fishy with his finny friends — a pyromaniacal piranha and a smokin’ smoked salmon! Simmons and his imagination grew up in Winnipeg, Man., with parents who nourished his creativity with their own love of storytelling, music and old-fashioned fun. Simmons fondly recalls waiting in a restaurant booth for food to arrive while his enterprising mother captivated the kids with hushed word games as she magically transformed soda straws, salt shakers and paper napkins into all sorts of entertaining and peculiar items! An eccentric collector of odds and sods, his father encouraged a young Simmons to explore and develop his imagination and his own fascination for gadgetry. His extended family was also made up of punsters, pranksters and eccentrics, including his Uncle Nick, who toured Eastern Canada and the U.S. as Steamboat Harris, who was best known for playing a ukulele built out of a toilet seat. Simmons has had a flair for performing since he was old enough to walk. He studied comedians on the Ed Sullivan Show and learned about the vaudeville days from his father’s descriptions of the old routines. Simmons often treated his family and neighborhood friends to impromptu parades, circuses and magic shows. As he grew older, Simmons discovered that he could actually make a living out of his love for the limelight. He first worked solo in variety shows and then formed the comedy-rock band, Out to Lunch. He hired thenunknown folksinger Fred Penner for lead guitar and changed the band’s name to Kornstalk. After Kornstalk disbanded in 1977, Simmons went back to performing solo, making a splash with his vaudevillian style. He and his costume-and-prop routine were often the most popular

made puns and the album’s title track — a tale of scary scallions, terrifying tomatoes and other menacing produce lurking in the vegetable garden. Simmons was also awarded a 1996 U.S. Parents’ Choice Award of quality for Celery Stalks At Midnight, as well as a coveted Cable Ace Award nomination for his music video, Counting Feathers/I Collect Rocks. Longstreet Press also developed the song into an illustrated children’s book. Simmons’ third album, the Juno-nominated The Truck I Bought From Moe, features songs about a Gypsy Sock, a lonely moose, a Drip Drip Dripping tap, and the dog with the longest name in the world. Simmons continues to take his show to fans both young and young at heart all over North America. He, Barbara and their three sons live in Anola, Man., a town with less than 200 people if you count geese, chickens, dogs, cats, and fish. Their home is a Simmons original creation in itself, featuring a real train bunk car bought from CNR for $500, and a fire pole on the second floor where you slide down into a padded, pillow playroom. Simmons is in his mid-50s but he has the energy a child. If he doesn’t tickle your funny bone and make you laugh, then perhaps you are taking life far too seriously.

and talked about act at fairs, exhibitions, folk festivals and children festivals across North America. In 1983, Simmons and his wife, Barbara Freundl, developed and produced a successful syndicated children’s television show, All For Fun. He has also been a frequent guest on Fred Penner’s Place and on Sesame Street, and has made appearances on YTV, Nickelodeon and TLC. He has been featured on television programs in Canada, the U.S. and as far away as Tokyo and Hong Kong. Simmons’ debut album, Something’s Fishy at Camp Wiganishi, takes young listeners on a madcap journey though his imaginary world of counting feath-

ers, collecting rocks, eating pancakes and wearing Lego underwear. Nominated for a Juno Award for best children’s album, Something’s Fishy was produced by Ken Whiteley and featured contributions from some of Canada’s top studio musicians. In 1995, Simmons released his brilliant ode to vaudeville, Celery Stalks At Midnight. Named Canada’s best children’s album at the 1995 Juno Awards, Celery Stalks is a musical variety show showcasing a collection of big band classics from the 1930s and 1940s, as well as Simmons’ own witty compositions. Action Committee. “They have run with it.” Teen Action Committee members have arranged for business-sponsored prizes to be given throughout the evening, and Eagle Mountain Security will keep the event under control. Jan Potyok, involved since the inception, is very proud of this youth event. “This is being driven by the kids,” she said. “They decided what it should be, and how it should be run, based on a little guidance. It is their event.”

This year, the Therapeutic Riding Program is a Blossom Festival event. From 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, everyone is welcome to watch a Therapeutic Riding Program demonstration at its newly renovated facility at 849 Erickson Rd. The riding demonstrations for the public will celebrate the grand reopening of the facility.

Introducing Our Newest Supplier

Also on display will be the upgraded mounting ramp, new tack area and other improvements made possible by the Kraft initiative launched by community volunteers last year. The Therapeutic Riding Program was the recipient of the Kraft award of $25,000, which also made possible the acquisition of Peanut and several additional gentle horses. Support for the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program upgrades came from several sources, including the KES Experience Works program, Columbia Basin Trust, the Creston KootenayFoundation, Tire Stewardship BC and the Town of Creston.

Children’s tents and train back at COTR

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca B7

BY JOANNA WILSON

The bouncy tent and the Kootenay Children’s Train from Cranbrook will once more be at the College of the Rockies immediately after the parade on Saturday, says Success By Six organizer Crista Comer. The children’s events run from noon-4 p.m., with 400-600 kids attending last year. “These are free events for the kids,” said Comer. “Last year over 400 kids took rides on the CU Express, a children’s train 54 feet long.” Volunteers from the Creston Valley development team and the Creston and District Public Library, are on hand to assist. Two inflatables, one a climbing and sliding obstacle course tent is new this year. “Come down to the College of the Rockies right after the Parade for free kids events,” says Comer. “Kids love it.”

Sue’s Clotheslines

Thursday, May 16, 2013 Creston Valley Advance

After 10 years, still hangin’ in there After opening just less than a year, the dental office next to my store was totally destroyed by fire; as I watched the firefighters work so hard to contain the fire to just one building I thought, “Where do I go from here?” Once the all-clear-to-enter came, I looked around and could not believe what I saw! Once again, with encouragement from John, we rolled up our sleeves and began our Fire Sale. During the days that followed, I was overwhelmed by the kindness of the community; people coming in with coffee and cookies - the offers of help were just amazing.

We have all heard the old saying “When one door closes another one opens” - that is so true for me. In 2002, my husband sold his store “Work World” to “Mark’s Work Warehouse” and that left me thinking, “I’m not sure I’m ready to retire.” So with lots of help and encouragement from my husband John, I opened Sue’s Clotheslines on April 7, 2003. It seems just like yesterday, but it has now been ten years. The last 10 years have had some ups and downs, but those bumps along the road have just made me stronger and I enjoy what I do even more.

The revitalization of Canyon Street was another test, but you need to turn a bad situation into a better one. I and all of the other local businesses donned our plastic hard hats to let the community know that we were open during construction. One of the services we have provided Creston with has been tuxedo rentals. Through the ten years I have seen many young men come in to get their tuxes for the prom. They go into the change room as just another young man and come out with that bit of polish.

“Through it all I have found the most wonderful customers in the world” - Sue Thomas

The restoration work started and ended up taking four weeks, but after re-opening we found that there was still smoke damage. We closed for another ten days to have more cleaning done. After that we were good to go!

Seeing their moms get misty-eyed or speechless makes it all worthwhile! Through the years I have seen youngsters not tall enough to see over the store counter turn into becoming young husbands and mothers. I’ve seen parents saddened by their “empty nest”, then enjoying their grandchildren. I’ve seen families changing with moves or loss of loved ones, but through it all I have found the most wonderful customers in the world. I so enjoy my store and the customers, who have become my friends. I look forward to many more years of Sue’s Clothelines serving the residents of Creston. Thank you, Creston, for allowing me to be part of this great community. Please join Irene and me on Friday May 17 for our Anniversary Celebration!

Hunger and malnutrition undermine all other humanitarian and development goals. According to the World Food Program every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5% to 10% in lifetime earnings. The cost of undernutrition to national economic development is estimated at $20 to $30 billion per year.

Students pledge to go tan-free CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY

The Canadian Cancer Society’s B.C. and Yukon branch is launching its Tanning is Out challenge for the third year in a row with B.C. high schools. The initiative mobilizes student leaders to educate and inform their peers about the dangers of tanning and challenge their classmates to take the pledge to go tan-free and be sun-safe for 2013. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Canada, and overexposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and indoor tanning equipment is the major cause. The good news is that skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. “There is absolutely no safe way to tan, yet many young people still want to get that bronzed look in order to live up to a certain ideal of beauty,” says Patti King, B.C. and Yukon health promotion team leader. “Youth are particularly vulnerable to the effects of both indoor and outdoor tanning and we need to work together to prevent cancer and save lives.” According to recent research, 49 per cent of young women and 28 per cent of young men actively try to get a tan from the sun. In addition, 27 per cent of young women between the ages of 16 and 24 use indoor tanning beds in Canada. King says that any use of indoor tanning equipment before the age of 35 significantly increases a person’s risk of melanoma. Lena Makortoff, a Grade 12 student at Prince Charles Secondary School, is excited to be helping to spread the word about the dangers of tanning to her peers. “I know many people my age still want to tan because they think it improves their appearance,” says Makortoff. “I am hoping that through the Tanning is Out challenge we can work towards changing this trend and fighting back against cancer.” Over the last two years, the society has been spreading the message that tanning is out in high schools across B.C. through their Tanning is Out challenge. Society health promotion coordinators and volunteers are currently working with local high school students on this peer-topeer based model to educate students about the dangers of both indoor and outdoor tanning. Since 2011, more than 8,000 Grade 12 students have pledged to be tan-free. This year, in high schools where the challenge is taking place, the society is encouraging the entire student body to take the pledge to be tan-free for 2013. For more information on the Tanning is Out initiative, visit cancergameplan.ca.

Librarian discussing Indian music as library’s next living book CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY The Creston and District Public Library’s living book for May is Morning Majesty: An Introduction to Indian Classical Music with chief librarian Aaron Francis. Musical style and variety are as diverse as the people on the planet — a planet that Francis has travelled widely, gaining

an understanding and appreciation for its melodies and rhythms. In his journeys and studies, Francis encountered Kambhoji, a majestic classical musical mode that is currently very popular on the Indian landscape. Francis is eager to share his love of Indian music, opening the door for the uninitiated. Kambhoji has been described by Indian classical performing artist

Charulatha Mani as “regal; majestic like a temple elephant adorned with precious finery.” It is hailed by critics as superb in its regal attire, its royal gait and sublime moods, enriching in charms, heart soothing and sensuous. Francis’s studies and analysis opened his eyes to how Kambhoji performers creatively manipulate a small number of musical elements to create a rich and ever-changing com-

plexity. General principles used to develop this particular performance apply, to a greater or lesser extent, to classical Indian music in general, and understanding these principles naturally leads to greater appreciation of the music. In his presentation, Francis will try to lay bare the core elements of a typical performance through listening, analysis, and discussion. See LIVING, page 22

From page 21 In addition to serving as chief librarian, Francis has had a rich and varied romance with the music of the world, both as a student and as a performer. In 2008, he completed a master’s degree in ethnomusicology from the University of BC. His thesis examined improvisational strategies for the Korean shawm (taepyeongso). He has studied at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, the National Center for Namdo Performing Arts and the Pandit Jasraj School of Music, and with numerous private instructors in Korea, Aaron Francis India and Canada. He has performed in bluegrass bands, Indonesian gamelan ensembles, Korean percussion groups, Ghanaian drumming groups, sacred harp choirs and as a soloist. His musical ambitions now rest solely on his younger son Max’s shoulders, as he is too busy running the library to practice anymore. The Creston library’s Living Books speaker series is a way for community members to learn from each other. Living books are real people, your friends and neighbours, volunteering to share aspects of their own story. Through living books, the library seeks to encourage the sharing of knowledge and passion between people. Each month, the library hosts a get-together where a member of your community shares their personal experiences. Topics are varied, from art to travel to local history to coping with loss, and everything in between. Attendees of the speaker series learn more about the people in their community and their diverse backgrounds and expertise. Hear Francis’s story of musical adventure at 1:30 p.m. May 25 at the library (531 16th Ave. S.). Admission is free. For more information on the Living Books speaker series, including upcoming living books or how to become a living book, contact Gail at 250-428-4141 or gail@crestonlibrary.com.
