WEDNESDAY,MAY MAY 29, 29,2013 2013 || NORTH NORTHISLAND ISLANDMIDWEEK MIDWEEK || 3 3 WEDNESDAY,

Competitors gearing up for Van Isle 360 Rick Munro Special to Midweek On June 9, 40 beautiful sailboats will race into Comox harbour completing the second leg of the

2013 Black Press Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race. These sail racing machines – some 70 feet in length – are easily seen from the marina boardwalk

and may be visited on the docks once safely moored. They are a sight to behold under sail and great fun to see up close – and the public is invited. This international

race has been run since 1999 and developed from the crazy idea of a few rabid catamaran sailors to what is clearly one of the most respected and exciting yacht races on the entire west coast of North America. The race starts on June 8 in Nanaimo and circumnavigates the whole of Vancouver Island over 14 days, stopping at 10 ports in the process. The city fathers, along with the residents of each port of call, most often organize a reception for the nearly 400 sailors and support crew whose arrival times are somewhat spread out through the afternoon; but prizegiving and welcoming speeches are usually at

6 p.m. Leg 3, June 10 runs from Comox to Campbell River, starting at 9 a.m. The awards presentation will be in or near the Rip Tide Pub in Campbell River at 6:45 p.m. Leg 4, June 11 goes from Deepwater Bay just north of Campbell River to Hardwicke Island. Leg 5, June 12 takes sailors to Telegraph Cove. Awards will be on the boardwalk near the whale museum at 6:45 p.m. Leg 6, June 13 leads from Telegraph Cove to Hardy Bay off the government dock in downtown Port Hardy. Leg 7, June 14 takes sailors from Port Hardy to Winter Harbour.

For many years, the reception in the Comox Marina was organized by the Comox Valley Yacht Club, but this year that honour has fallen to the Comox Bay Sailing Club and their team is hard at work in preparation. Commodore Andrew Walther said, “No major problems have been encountered,” and that the most significant item, that of finding moorage for 40 large sailing vessels in an otherwise full marina, has been resolved. Reception committee member and CBSC activist, Rick Tae, has negotiated that all the racing vessels will be together in the private

marina – located just below where the Edgewater once stood, and that the gates will be open to welcome visitors. With more and larger racing boats competing each year, the competition becomes keener and the level of community participation and mutual support gets higher. An interesting example of such participation is occurring in the Comox Valley with the arrival of the fleet this year: the private marina is donating the proceeds of the moorage fees to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Opportunity 3X6 to Comment On BC Ferries’ Proposal For New Vessels The British Columbia Ferry Commission, the independent regulator of BC Ferry Services Inc., is seeking public comment on BC Ferries’ proposal to replace vessels on Route 9 (Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands) and Route 17 (Powell River-Little River/Comox).

BC FERRY COMMISSION

BC Ferries has submitted an application under Section 55 of the Coastal Ferry Act seeking the commissioner’s approval of the major capital expenditure necessary to acquire three new vessels to replace the Queen of Burnaby and the Queen of Nanaimo both of which are near the end of their service lives and are scheduled for retirement in fiscal 2017. Under Section 55 of the Act, the commissioner may approve a major capital expenditure if the proposed expenditure is reasonable, prudent, and consistent with the current Coastal Ferry Services Contract, and any long term capital plan established by the ferry operator. Click on “What’s New” at www.bcferrycommission.com for a copy of BC Ferries’ application and Section 55 Application Guidelines established by the commissioner. Comments or submissions can be sent by email to info@bcferrycommission.com or by mail to BC Ferry Commission, PO Box 9279 Stn Prov Govt, Victoria BC, V8W9J7. Deadline for public comments is June 17, 2013. Comments submitted to the commission may be published on our website.

Time to clear up some medical myths It is time to dispel some medical myths that I find myself clarifying in my practice on a daily basis. n Myth: Flaxoil provides EPA and DHA essential fatty acids. Flaxoil is a plantbased oil that contains

alpha linolenic acid, a type of omega 3 essential fatty acid, but it does not contain EPA and DHA essential fatty acids. The body does convert alpha linolenic acid into EPA and DHA but this is very inefficient and one tablespoon

of Flaxoil may yield the production of about 300 mg of EPA and DHA. The only way to get the 3,000 mg of EPA and DHA that is required for its protective effects into your diet every day is to take a fish oil supplement by the tablespoon or to

eat fish five days per week. The advantage of fish oil is that the good brands have been purified of dioxins, PCB’s and mercury. n Myth: Elevated serum B12 levels in the blood are harmful. Blood testing is not an accurate evaluation of B12 status. I like

CBSC Commodore Walther is delighted that the Rotary Club of Strathcona will host a “French Toast” breakfast for the departing sailors, as well as for fans and well-wishers, early in the morning of Sunday, June 9. The Black Press Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race is a world-class event and the Comox Bay Sailing Club is pleased and proud to have a representative in the race (Tripp Tease) and to be the hosts for the fleet when they arrive at the Comox marina. The public is encouraged to see the fleet and to follow its progress on the sailing club’s Facebook page during the entire race.

The treeplanting life

Fishing 2X14 Corner

Scott Stanfield Black Press CUMBERLAND — Gwyn Sproule is on her “second incarnation” as a teacher after spending about two decades planting trees in various corners of B.C. The Cumberland councillor started out as a Grade 1 teacher in Sheffield, England, but decided to put teaching on hold when she heard about treeplanting in Canada. Backed by a “romantic image” of earning a living in the forests of B.C., she and a friend packed their bags and moved overseas. Her first home was a cabin in Likely in the Interior, where she landed her first treeplanting job. The year was 1977. Treeplanting is a combination of hard work and precision. Workers face fines if there are too many or too few trees in a plot, or if trees are planted out of line. “That can be discouraging when you’ve already worked hard,” Sproule said. “Morale just plummets …you have to be tough.” Barring a serious injury, treeplanters have to carry on, regardless of weather conditions. “There’s no shelter from the storm,” she said, recalling wilted sandwiches and rain falling into her thermos of tea during lunch breaks. After her time in Likely, Sproule worked in the Canim Lake area near 100 Mile House where she met her husband Jamie, who was the camp cook. The couple later moved to Cumberland. They live near Camp Road, which is something of a magnet for retired treeplanters. “A good chunk of Camp Road is connected with treeplanting,” said Sproule, who guesses about half the Cumberland

HEALTH PRODUCTS THAT REALLY WORK FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Stem Cell Activator

Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. <Women looking for antiaging help! We all want to slow down aging. Canadian entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den regular panelist W. Brett Wilson, as well as Donald Trump. But don’t let the apparent focus on business fool you. It’s fitness, health and community that hold her heart. She’ll combine all three in Run for Their Lives, a 495-kilometre run from Port Hardy to Victoria in aid of three Greater Victoria charities. “I like to challenge myself, and running and fitness are my biggest passions,” says the 23-year-old Saanich resident, who is a certified trainer and blogs on health and fitness. “There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that I can help people at the same time.” Hempler, a 2008

graduate of North Island Secondary School in Port McNeill, plans to start the run there May 20. She hopes to run a marathon a day, about 42 km, for two or three days straight, rest for a day, then resume her pace. “I’m thankful to be able to run 40 kilometres at a time,” she says. Last weekend, she peeled off a 30km training run, a regimen she plans to ease back on soon, as she is also training for the May 5 BMO Vancouver Marathon. Last fall, she ran her first GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon. “The biggest thing with distance running is to be patient and not increase the distance too quickly,” she says. in the throat cause snoring, also interrupted breathing and gasping for air (sleep apnea), which brings on being tired all day, need for napping, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, irregular heart beat. Read below how Bell helps thousands, usually first night, inexpensively, with no side effects. Greatly improves quality of life and saves marriages. Survey says 48% snore and 75% are suffering if you include the silent suffering partners. To my surprise, after taking BellSound Sleep #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my #23 doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

Allergies

#24

are a modern epidemic

<I tried numerous other remedies all my life that were not effective. Since I discovered #31 I do not have a stuffy nose and itchy eyes when pollen season comes around. I don’t have to walk around like a doped zombie anymore. Leonard Waldner, 44, Delia, AB < For 20 years my life was miserable with sneezing, watery eyes and sinus pressure year-round on most days. I was amazed. On 3rd day all allergies were gone. It was like magic. Becky Gerber, 25, Dover, OH <Golfing without allergy attacks I tried all the medications and none worked. After taking 1 capsule in the morning I’m completely free of all symptoms. Richard Gamez, 74, San Antonio, TX <God bless you I went from doctor to doctor for years with allergy sinus problems. The medications made me still sicker. After starting Bell Allergy Relief one capsule at night I felt like born again the next morning. Therese Noto, 58, New York, NY.

Money from run will send kids to summer camp From Page 7 is no sudden crazy idea. Hempler has been thinking about tackling a major run for a few years. Her running background goes back much further. Distance training was a daily routine at school in her hometown of Novgorod, Russia. She North Island Midweek

began competing in track upon moving to Alberta in Grade 5. She developed into a top high school runner in northern Alberta before moving to the North Island. She counts Terry Fox as a major inspiration, having discovered the Terry Fox Run during her Wed, May 29, 2013

school days in Alberta. Even then she liked the idea that she could help a charity while working on her running skills. “I kind of missed out on the deadline for the GoodLife Fitness Marathon charity (program), she says, explaining her desire to make her Island

run a fundraiser. She has a connection to all three charities: she has volunteered for the Mustard Seed food bank, a roommate volunteered with the B.C. SPCA and a classmate was a summer intern at Recreation Integration Victoria. Doug Nutting,

executive director for RIV, said his organization is “thrilled to be one of the charities Hempler targeted. “Given the economy and what it’s like to be a nonprofit, anytime we can generate some extra revenue, it’s greatly appreciated, Nutting

than for my friend, Kim to have the same quality of life that you and I enjoy. By raising funds for

the GearUp I can help make this happen. By making a donation to my ride you can help too.” Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. There is no cure for CF. It causes a build up of thick mucus in the lungs leading to severe respiratory problems which can make breathing difficult. Meanwhile, mucus and protein build-up in the digestive tract results in extreme difficulty digesting and absorbing adequate nutrients from food. The effects of cystic fibrosis are most devastating in the lungs. Wood and others who have CF must endure hours of physiotherapy and inhaled medications daily to help clear the secretions from their lungs and keep

a lid on chronic lung infections. Wood also has CF related diabetes and uses an insulin pump and strict dietary controls. She takes about 60 pills a day to help her body absorb the nutrition required to fight her illness. “It would mean the world to me to see a cure or control for this disease,” said Houston. Joining Houston for the first few days will be her husband Daryl Barnes. Also on the ride will be Michael Hamilton, 25, who has cystic fibrosis. Hamilton grew up in Campbell River and along with his father Neal, volunteers for Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s Campbell River Chapter. To help sponsor Houston or Hamilton, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada can be dropped off at Outdoor Addictions or online at www.cfvancouver.ca and follow the links for Gearup4CF 2013.
