Township hikes water waste fines By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

Langley Township residents who ignore water shortage restrictions face steeper fines now that council has approved across-the-board increases for people caught sprinkling lawns, washing cars or filling swimming pools when they shouldn’t. The new penalties were unanimously approved by council May 13. Fines rise for each of the four stages of water restrictions. For stage one, which limits watering residential lawns, the fine has risen from $75 to $100. For stage two, which imposes restrictions on washing sidewalks, driveways, walls and roofs, the fine doubles from $100 to $200. Violating stage three, which bans lawn sprinkling altogether and tightens restrictions on washing cars, boats and “outdoor surfaces” as well as filling or refilling swimming pools, will result in a $300 fine, up from $200. For stage four, the most restrictive, which bans virtually all outdoor watering, the fine increases to $400 from $300. Residents can report neighbours who violate water restrictions to the Township bylaw enforcement office. Stage one water restrictions will be in effect in Langley and all other Lower Mainland municipalities from June 1 to September 30.

During that time, residential lawn sprinkling is only allowed from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. at evennumbered addresses on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and at odd-numbered addresses on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. In July, stage three water restrictions will be applied to East Langley, as they have every year since 2009 because of concerns about potentially low water wells. That’s because the East Langley municipal water system relies solely on municipal wells drawing groundwater from local aquifers. The stage three order covers Aldergrove, Gloucester, and Salmon River Uplands, including Tall Timbers and Acadia. In May, work on eliminating the area’s dependance on wells officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the first phase of a new pipeline to bring in Metro Vancouver water. The $33.5 million East Langley Water Supply project is the biggest project ever undertaken by the Township of Langley’s engineering department, with 14 kilometres of water main and a booster pump station. Phase 1 will run a one-metre diameter steel water main between Willoughby and Murrayville following 72 Avenue, 210 Street, Worrell Crescent, 216 Street, 56 Avenue, and 224 Street. Work is scheduled to run Monday to Friday until December, 2013.

Trolley service launches Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove Fire Hall #3 fire fighter Craig Archibald pulls the dead weight of a dummy in the Pacific Regional FireFit competition on the weekend at Philip Jackman Park. Saturday’s opening ceremonies and events were blessed with cloud cover and no rain which kept competitors and the large crowd cool. The Aldergrove Trolley Company will present the official launch of the trolley service here in Aldergrove on Saturday, June 1. Mayor Jack Froese is scheduled to perform the ceremonial ribbon cutting at 26827 Fraser Highway. ‘Million Dollar Neighbourhood’ alumni Frankie Gassler will be on hand as emcee for the day and there will be musical performances by Kenny Buston, Jared Fowler and others. Locals are invited to come on out and ride the trolley for free between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The routes include south to Pioneer Park on 0 Avenue, west as far as Otter Co-op on 248

Street, east to Safeway at 276 Street, and north to Gloucester Industrial Estates on 56 Avenue. For more information see website: www.aldergrovetrolleycompany.ca

Piping Up for Aldergrove Parade

HARRY HUNT PHOTO

Pipers lead the downtown Aldergrove Parade for the opening of the Aldergrove FireFit Festival on Saturday morning. All manner of floats and vehicles were featured in the parade, which was moved up from July this year to help create a downtown buzz and atmosphere. The Aldergrove Fair Days will return on July 19-21 at Aldergrove Athletic park but will not feature a parade at that time.

Cougar, bear sightings reported in Langley Aldergrove Star

Cougars and bears have been spotted in Langley, and police are urging the public to use caution. Over the Victoria Day long weekend, Langley RCMP received a report of a cougar sighting in Williams Park and a bear sighting in north Langley. Both sightings took place on Saturday, May 18, with the bear seen in the West Langley Park area, at 95A Avenue and 208 Street. One person said he saw the bear again on Monday, May 20 near the Walnut Grove skate park. The local conservation officer was out as well and has several helpful tips for people to stay safe around wildlife. Cougar sightings in Langley are very rare, but bears are a common sight, often making their way through the ravines in Walnut Grove, even visiting the area of the Costco store a few years ago. The following safety tips about cougars, bears and coyotes are from the Conservation Office Service: Many of the helpful tips related to cougars are similar to those for coyotes. To avoid conflicts with coyotes, you should: - Keep pets indoors or in secure kennels at night for safety; - Bring farm animals into enclosed sheds or barns at night, especially during calving or lambing seasons; - Do not leave pet food or food scraps outside; - When children are playing outdoors, closely supervise them; - Light walkways around your home and remove any heavy vegetation or landscaping near the house; - Avoid feeding or attracting deer; – Hike in small groups and make enough noise to prevent surprising a cougar; and – Keep small children close to the

group, preferably in plain sight just ahead of you. If you see a cougar, you should: – Stop, stand tall and don’t run. Pick up small children. Remember, a cougar’s instinct is to chase’ – Face the cougar, talk to it firmly, always leaving the animal an escape route; - Try to appear larger than the cougar by getting above it, such as stepping up onto a stump. If you are wearing a jacket, hold it open to further increase your size; - Do not take your eyes off the animal or turn your back. Do not crouch down or try to hide; - Be assertive. Shout, wave your arms and throw rocks. The idea is to convince the cougar you are not prey, but a potential danger; and - If the cougar attacks, fight back aggressively and try to stay on your feet. Cougars have been driven away by people who have fought back using anything within reach, including sticks, rocks, shovels, backpacks, and clothing – even bare hands. Generally, if you are aggressive enough, a cougar will flee, realizing it has made a mistake. People are asked to report all sightings of cougars to the Conservation Officer Service call centre at 1-877-952-7277. Bear sightings are common in B.C. and most of the bears seen are transiting through the area, doing what bears do and looking for food. - A bear that does not find food will move on; - It is an offence under the Wildlife Act to feed dangerous wildlife; - Keep away from the bear and tell others to do the same; - Bring children and pets inside until the bear has left; - If you do meet a bear, try to remain calm. Do not make eye con-

tact; - Never approach or chase the bear. Instead face the bear without making eye contact and back away slowly; and - Extend your arms above your head, appearing as large as you can, talk in a gruff voice and look for a weapon such as a rock or stick. Conservation officers and bear awareness groups suggest adopting the following practices into your daily routine: — Keep garbage secured in the house, garage or shed until pick-up day and return the containers to the secure site once they are emptied; — Pick ripe and fallen fruit daily and remove any unused fruit trees; — Use bird feeders only in winter; — Keep the ground free of seeds and nuts or treats for the squirrels and other wildlife, as food is plentiful for them at this time of year; — Clean the barbecue grill after each use. The smell of salmon or meat wafting from a grill for hours will draw bears. Store barbecues covered in a secure area; — Don’t add meat products or uncooked food to compost, and turn it regularly and keep it covered; and. — Work with your neighbours to create a bear aware and problem-free neighbourhood. If a bear is threatening, persistent or aggressive, call the Report All Poachers hotline toll free at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277) or visit their website at www.rapp.bc.ca. For more information on bears and bearhuman conflicts visit www.env.gov. bc.ca/wld/bearsmart/bearsmintro. html. Here are some interesting facts about coyotes: – Coyotes have large ears that point up. They can hear a mouse under 20 cm of snow.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Walnut Grove resident Bayley Schmidt, 13, took this picture of a bear wandering through her neighbourhood on Friday, August 12, 2011. – Coyotes rarely fight with each other. They use gestures and sounds to communicate. – The majority of coyotes that have bitten children have been fed by adults. – Coyotes have bushy black tipped tails which they carry low while in motion. – Coyotes are active day and night. – Coyotes eat a wide range of foods including rodents, fruit, insects and fish. – Lower Mainland coyotes weight between 20 to 35 lbs. Coyotes are very adaptable creatures and are commonly found in cities across North America. They came to the Vancouver area in the late 1980s. A fed coyote puts your community at risk, so it is important to never feed coyotes. What attracts coyotes to your

neighbourhood? Coyotes often will feed off pet food stored outdoors. They will look for accessible garbage or compost, even fallen tree fruit. If you see a coyote, it is important you appear as aggressive as possible. Shout in a loud and deep voice while moving towards an area where there is much activity. Do not run from the coyote, always maintaining eye contact, you can even throw objects at the coyote. Coyote sightings can be reported to Stanley Park Ecology Society through their website at www.stanleyparkecology.ca or by calling 604681-WILD (9453). The Stanley Park Ecology Society will also provide coyote information to individuals, groups and organizations. Please report aggressive coyotes or the feeding of coyotes to the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection at 1-800-663-9453.

A new federal law that will ban medicinal marijuana growing in residential neighbourhoods is likely good news for most Langley Township residents, and public safety officials. But there are some troubling unknowns about the impact of the new laws, including the likelihood of a court challenge and concerns the formerly legal residential grow-ops could keep going. That was the view of participants in a Tow ns h i p - s p o nso red public information session on the planned changes by the federal government, held Wednesday evening (May 15) at the George Preston recreation centre in Brookswood. “My big concern is that we suddenly have 26,000-plus illegal grow operations out there,” said the head of the Langley RCMP detachment, Supt. Derek Cooke. Other members of the panel sounded the same mix of optimism and caution about the new laws. Township Mayor Jack Froese said because the regulation of medicinal marijuana growing is under federal authority, there is little local authorities can do to restrict the current activity. “I’m the mayor, but I’m not the king,” Froese said. “Our hands are tied.”

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Mayor Jack Froese was among the speakers at the Township forum. Langley RCMP Sgt. Jason Wilde said court decisions that upheld the right to access medical marijuana ultimately led to an explosion in the numbers of licensed grows-ops from a few hundred to many thousands. “It kind of became a slippery slope,” Wilde said. Langley MP Mark Warawa said the new law, which will take effect in April, 2014, will replace the thousands of small grow-ops currently operating in neighbourhoods across Canada with roughly 60 large licensed growing facilities that will be restricted to commercial and industrial areas. “We know the problem has grown to the point of making it unlivable,” Warawa said. Township fire chief Stephen Gamble and

Township bylaws manager Bill Storie also took part in the two-hour meeting. Health Canada, the federal government agency that regulates medical marijuana growing, was invited to send a representative, but refused. Some residents who spoke expressed frustration with the current state of affairs, as well as hope the new regulations will improve the situation and fear that legal challenges could disrupt their implementation. One man said he personally knew of supposedly legal medicinal marijuana grow-ops that were being operated in Langley by people with ties to organized crime. Many have complained criminals are targeting legal grow-ops to steal product, creating a safety hazard for people

who live nearby. By 2014, all of the residential marijuana growing licenses will have expired and the new federal government regulations will restrict legal grow-ops to commercial areas. Under the new rules, medical marijuana will be dispersed through pharmacies or by mail. Consumers will be limited to purchasing 150 grams at a time — which works out to five grams per day for 30 days. Some municipalities — including Maple Ridge, Surrey, Coquitlam and Vancouver — are reported to be considering restrictive zoning bylaws to amplify the impact of the federal law, while Langley City is proposing a complete prohibition on the production of medical marijuana within its boundaries.

Seniors Week: Picnic, health fair celebrate seniors Aldergrove Star

Are you looking for something to do during Seniors’ Week? If so, the Township of Langley is hosting its first annual Seniors’ Picnic & Health Fair event on Friday, June 7, at McLeod Athletic Park, 56 Avenue and 216 Street, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $5 per person which includes soup, sandwich, dessert, coffee or tea, and water, as well as a grab bag of items donated by businesses and organizations within our community. A special thanks to Fortis BC for their generous cash donation to help offset the cost of the food. “We appreciate the donations we have received from the many businesses in our community,” said Mandy Hadfield, community recreation programmer for the Township of Langley’s Recreation, Culture, and Parks Division. “Thanks to Buy Low Foods, each person who attends the picnic will receive a cloth shopping bag to collect all of the free giveaways at our event.” During the Health Fair, visitors will have the opportunity to see various community information booths, where they can ask questions

or learn about the many services available in the community. The organizing committee has received a great response from the community and the organizations taking part in this year’s picnic include the RCMP, Langley Township Fire Department, Meals on Wheels, Stroke Recovery, Langley Gardens, and many more. As guests enjoy their lunch they will hear different community health practitioners speak about seniors’ issues, with topics covering fall prevention, senior’s housing, and nutrition. As well, the RCMP will be presenting a talk on safety. “We are fortunate to have so many great speakers coming to our event,” said Tina Papatolis, Township of Langley community recreation programmer. “This is an excellent opportunity for seniors to gather a lot of helpful information all in one place.” Pre-registration for the Seniors’ Picnic & Health Fair is required. VICTORIA – Like those Japanese soldiers who didn’t hear about the end of World War II, the militant fringe that controls the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is digging in for endless battle against the B.C. government. Their nemesis, Premier Christy Clark, reiterated last week that seeking a 10-year agreement with the BCTF is a top priority when the legislature is recalled this summer. The current one-year truce ends June 30. The BCTF grudgingly agreed to that extension last year, then ran TV ads calling for an NDP government that promised concessions and union bosses on both sides of the negotiating table. “You know, I may be a lame duck,” outgoing BCTF president Susan Lambert crowed to cheering classroom-warfare radicals at the union’s convention in March, “but I think Christy’s goose is cooked.” We’ll never know how much this sort of gloating contributed to the epic collapse of the NDP, champion of public sector union members whose pay and benefits make them the new upper class. But I can tell you the prospects for sparing children from this ideological warfare are not good. Last week the B.C. Court of Appeal handed down an ivory-tower decision that upheld the “right” of teachers to bring their union demands

BCTF digs in for endless war

into the classroom in the form of posters, buttons and black armbands that to some selfabsorbed teachers symbolize the “death” of education. During the election campaign, The Globe and Mail carried a story on one of those mock elections held in schools around the province. An elementary-level student was quoted as saying she voted against the B.C. Liberals because Clark “caused a teachers’ strike.” If this kid was talking about the most recent strike, I wonder where she got that idea. In a negotiating performance that was appalling even by BCTF standards, Lambert and her team conducted months of disruptive work-torule action before they could even articulate a wage and benefit demand. When they finally did, it was outrageously out of touch with reality. An indication of how the union’s ruling class wants to conduct itself in the classroom can be found in the latest issue of the BCTF newsletter to its members. Joanna Larson, president of the Prince Rupert union local, contributes an article headlined: “What kind of citizen do we hope to graduate from our K-12 public schools?” Larson first quotes the education ministry’s current goals. They include preparing citizens who are “creative, flexible, self-motivated, and who

have a positive self-image.” Another goal is citizens who are “skilled and who can contribute to society generally, including the world of work.” Larson then mocks these goals, as follows: “Essentially, the Ministry of Education has a vision of citizens who will maintain the status quo, not rock the boat, and participate on a superficial level in aspects of political and societal change. It doesn’t challenge individuals to take direct action against exploitation, marginalization and violence.” In case you missed the political message, Larson later asserts: “The educated citizens we graduate from our schools cannot just be content to wear a pink shirt once a year…. Educated, engaged citizens must be willing to take direct action to change and shape our society for the better.” What is this ghastly “status quo” that must be challenged by “direct action”? In these campus-radical screeds, the final answer is generally the same: capitalism. This call to arms is a blend of the NDP election platform and a rant from the Occupy Vancouver squat of a couple of years ago. It’s no wonder we hear of students making BCTF picket signs in art class. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Editor: Stephen Harper had a chance to be a leader, ethically accountable, humble and contrite by accepting responsibility for the Reform Party-led Conservative Senate Scandal, even to put it behind him. “He blew it” is the conclusion observers of Canadian politics are reaching, including the National Post’s John Ivison. Harper blew it. Instead of accepting responsibility, Stephen Harper tells us “Canadians want the Senate to change.” But what is needed isn’t “Senate Reform”ˇ. Ethical conduct in appointment, yes. Patronage and partisanship, no. Divisive provincial senate elections, absolutely not. But that is what Stephen Harper wants and where he wants to deflect the Harper Conservative Senate scandal. Harper is using the scandal of his making and that of his party to push the Reform Party - his old party - divisive agenda on the Senate, to rewrite 1867 as 1776. What we see in Harper’s failure of leadership today is Harper’s choice to deny responsibility for his appointments to the Senate and choice of Chief of Staff, to deflect responsibility onto the Senate itself and onto individuals — others — who he says should be held accountable and away from himself and his party. Harper is saying such individuals should leave his party and caucus. Instead of accepting responsibility for his ethical and leadership failures, Stephen Harper chooses to exploit the moment to advance the divisive “new Conservative”ˇ Reform Party agenda and policy directions. Harper needs to be held accountable and to pay the political price which ranks with his conduct in the 2008 prorogation crisis he originated in calling for his resignation and a new ministry formed. Whatever you wish to call the Reform “Conservative” Party, it is time to “Give Steve the Heave.” Brian Marlatt, White Rock

Residents speak out

Editor: Re: Town Hall meeting in Bradner. I want to say that if it is the Mayor’s intention to insult a large group of people on a regular basis, it appears by popular consensus that he is succeeding. It is obvious the Mayor has a certain disdain for me personally (once again--please forgive me for speaking out of turn on Monday) but was it totally necessary to chastise me in such an insulting manner, twice? Perhaps the ‘line up at the microphone’ method would alleviate the problem of the overzealous speaker. Upon reflection, I can’t help but remember the following: Bradner and Mt. Lehman was insulted Monday when the Mayor said, “Why would you care about arts and culture? You’re just a bunch of farmers out here.” Conversely he had also insulted us at the first meeting he attended here when he accused us of not being farmers — saying we all lived in 10,000 sq. ft. mansions with swimming pools. While addressing a question about urban sprawl Monday, the Mayor showed disrespect to the group of urban core residents who had earlier voiced dismay at the thought of skyscrapers, going so far as to mock their statements in a whiny voice. (And always those same insensitive references to NIMBYs.) At that first meeting in Bradner last July he was very rude to a woman (known to be somewhat of an environmental community advocate), dismissing her presence before she had even spoken. At the AAC meeting in March the Mayor upbraided committee member Brenda Falk for her (what he referred to as) misuse of agricultural land (at Tanglebank Gardens) and humiliated and embarrassed Mark Robbins because he dared to interrupt him. Clearly the Mayor does not take kindly to folks who do not share his views, or dare to question his motives in any way — jumping ahead of the queue at Town Hall meetings or not. Never have I witnessed such bullying behaviour in any political forum and contrary to his dismissive rudeness to me on Monday (and on several other occasions) I will continue to be involved in city business where I see fit. It is plainly evident that the City of Abbotsford is eager to push this proposed industrial development through in Bradner but thinks that by thinly going through the motions (and then revisiting the results to suit their own purposes) they are meeting the needs of the community. Whose community, Mayor Banman? Certainly not mine. In closing, I think you need to remember that you are an elected official, sir, and that you should treat people respectfully, whether you agree with them or not. Kerry Proudfoot, Bradner

Watershed Moment: LEPS celebrates 20th Aldergrove Star

As spring is springing into summer in Langley, thousands of juvenile salmon are swimming in the local creeks and making their way to the Fraser River. Every Langley home is located in the middle of salmon habitat. That’s because Langley is a region of watersheds. Each of Langley’s 12 watersheds collects runoff from our backyards and directs it into a salmon-bearing stream. The Fraser River salmon run – the largest in Canada – depends on the Fraser’s small tributaries for spawning and the healthy development of young fish. Over 800 kms. of these salmon bearing streams flow through Langley, serving as a crucial link in the lifecycle of Pacific salmon. Mapping, protecting and restoring these watersheds was

the basis for the formation of Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS). Back in 1993, a forward-thinking municipal employee named Peter Scales convened a small group of community-minded individuals to form a non-profit society that could provide local green jobs, utilize volunteers and build community-oriented partnerships to conserve the streams and natural areas of Langley. Today, LEPS continues to work with numerous volunteer stewardship organizations to protect and restore Langley’s natural environment through education, cooperation and action. Since inception, the group has involved over 5,000 volunteers in surveying nearly 2,000 kms. of local streams, planting over 100,000 streamside trees, removing thousands of cubic metres of invasive plants, educat-

ing tens of thousands of school children on environmental topics, removing tonnes of trash from local waterways, releasing hundreds of thousands of juvenile salmon into local streams, building community garden plots, operating the Langley Demonstration Garden, and so much more. LEPS has provided employment opportunities for over 300 youth and young professionals, and in 2012, LEPS was recognized as one of the top ten Environmental Employers of the Year. In 2013, LEPS celebrates their 20th anniversary. To celebrate their vast accomplishments and observe this 20-year milestone, LEPS is hosting the Gumboot Gala, a 20th anniversary celebration of watershed stewardship in Langley. To be held on Saturday, June 1 at the

Redwoods Golf Course, the Gumboot Gala will feature a silent auction and a “100-mile” meal with many locally-sourced products featured on the menu. “In true LEPS fashion, the wearing of gumboots in encouraged at this semi-formal event, and the entrance will feature the Gumboot Red Carpet,” says LEPS executive director Nichole Marples. “LEPS invites everyone who has supported LEPS in any way over the past 20 years to join us at the celebration. Even those who have not been directly involved yet, but would like to, are welcome to attend.” Tickets are available on-line at www.gumbootgala.eventbrite. ca and all proceeds will support environmental stewardship projects in Langley. The 26Th annual BC ChilDren’s hOsPiTal’s MiraCle WeekenD

BC Children’s Hospital helps kids get care closer to home BC Children’s Hospital has played a big role in Kaitlyn Morovic’s life. The three-yearold was born with Down syndrome and two holes in her heart, and spent the first six weeks of her life in the hospital. Her mother Heather still raves about the care Kaitlyn receives at Children’s while also celebrating the fact that she now has what she calls her “direct link” to BC Children’s in the form of Richmond-based pediatrician Dr. Erik Swartz. “Dr. Swartz has expertise in Kaitlyn’s condition and everything that’s secondary to it,” Morovic says. “Although Children’s is just 20 minutes away, it’s great to be able to get an appointment quickly with Dr. Swartz, and he’s just a few minutes from home.” Swartz works in the General Pediatrics Clinic, which is part of the Child Health Centre at Richmond Hospital. The Child Health Centre was established with $800,000 in support from Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital aimed at ensuring all children in BC have access to a consistent standard of care no matter where in the province they live. The centre is also home to the Early Childhood Mental Health Program and the Noakes Primary Care Maternity Clinic. “The fact that Kaitlyn is able to receive specialized care so close to home is exactly

what we’re looking for,” says Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive director of Child Health BC. Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respectively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Pediatric clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo and Prince George have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participated in Child Health BC’s workshops. O’Donnell credits Overwaitea Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s growing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a presence in so many BC communities. Overwaitea Food Group President Darrell Jones agrees. “We’re committed to the health and wellness of kids and families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and with the help of our communities, we’ve contributed millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects,

advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played a key role in making this fundraising success possible.” Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC. Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children. Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support research, equipment purchases and training. On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs. “Every year people from across the province make donations in support of the hospital and it makes a huge difference,” says Gold. “Kaitlyn Morovic is proof of that.” Heather Morovic says she’s grateful for both the care Kaitlyn receives at BC Children’s and the support she gets on a regular basis from Dr. Swartz. “He just gets it,” she says. “And Kaitlyn is doing fantastic. She’s walking and trying hard to talk, and she certainly knows how to pull on the heart strings. With BC Children’s and Dr. Swartz on our side, we couldn’t ask for a better support team.”

BC Children’s Hospital treated over 81,000 children last year. Approximately 67 per cent of those children came from outside the City of Vancouver.

JUNE 1 & 2, 2013 On June 1 and 2, tune in to Miracle Weekend, broadcast live from BC Children’s Hospital, on Global BC from 7:00pm on Saturday, June 1 until 5:30pm on Sunday, June 2 The 26th annual BC Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Weekend is a two-day celebration that showcases the best of BC Children’s Hospital: patients, their families, caregivers and supporters who come from every corner of BC. BC Children’s Hospital receives over 200,000 visits from patients from across the province every year. Donations help the hospital deliver the best in care every day, and are helping to prepare for the future by supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and better access to care for children in or close to their home communities. Please support BC Children’s Hospital.

At the Overwaitea Food Group, we’re very proud of our longstanding commitment to investing in the health of kids and their families. We’re grateful to everyone who supports us in this effort. Our team members, customers and suppliers have all played a key role in our fundraising success over the years. We’ve been supporting BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades, and we’ve raised millions of dollars in support of capital improvement projects, important research initiatives and advocacy programs designed to help keep our kids safe by reducing preventable injuries. In 2007, we made a $20 million pledge to support Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital that helps get kids in BC get the care they need, closer to home. Since then, we’ve raised more than $10.7 million toward our goal, and Child Health BC has been able to put this concept into action in a number of communities throughout BC. We are grateful for the amazing commitment and fund raising efforts driven by OFG team members who encourage the generosity of our customers and suppliers.

more speed to the team. Second baseman Tyler Jones returns and has already hit several key doubles. Domingo Guarenas is back and is needed for his versatility at several positions and his switch hitting abilities. The Giants are also happy to have Jordan Fatkin back playing games after time off for education. Steve Borth was one of the top batters last year for the Fox and Hounds Giants; this year Steve has already played five different positions. Each year the Giants are looking for players and this year the Giants were lucky to land several strong free agents. PBL’s Ryan Jensen has committed to a full season with the Giants and he is a welcome addition to the team. Also joining Ryan is former PBL David Butler. David and Ryan bring strong offensive and defensive skills to the team. Will Beatty has committed full time to the Giants. Another newcomer who has been out of the game for several years, from Maple Ridge is Trevor Lowrie, Trevor bats left and will need some time to get used to some of the pitching the LMBA has to offer. The Giants are in need of several players each year on a part time basis, and the team would like to thank Kris Armstrong, Brad Nedimovich, Gavin Landreth, Robin Fuller, Graham Dunne and Matt Jones for registering and filling in when needed. The Giants would like to thank the Fox and Hounds Pub-Beer and Wine store for their continued support of the team. The Aldergrove Giants would also like to thank AMBA for their support — six of the Giants have played in Aldergrove since they were eight years old. The Giants home nights are on Sundays at 6 p.m., with the next home game on June 9 against the Richmond Athletics.

Bears: are looking for food - don’t let them learn it can easily be

obtained from humans. There have been a couple of bear sightings in Langley this season. If you encounter a bear, do not run. Act big and loud, and back away slowly to a safe place.

Cougars: can have kittens throughout the year, and family groups can be seen at any time. Cougars survive on natural food sources found in the wild, primarily deer. Cougar attacks on humans are highly unlikely. However, if you encounter a cougar, do not run. Pick children up immediately and talk to the cougar in a confident voice. Act big by waving sticks and branches, and back away slowly while still facing the cougar. If it attacks, fight back.

Coyotes: have the largest population of potentially dangerous wildlife in the area and can be seen year round, even in residential areas. Family groups with pups, which are trained to hunt and kill, have been regularly seen around Langley. Coyotes are bold and easily lose their natural fear of people. Never feed a coyote. If you encounter a coyote, scare it off by making loud noise or throwing something at it to make it afraid. Never ignore a coyote. If it continues to approach, do not run. Maintain eye contact, pick up small pets or children, and slowly move to an area of increased activity.

In Agricultural Areas: Protect your investment by keeping fences secure and free of damage that predators can use for access. Coyotes burrow, so ensure surrounding netting goes deep into the ground. Use electric fencing to deter bears from blueberries and beehives, and pick berries and fruit as they ripen. Be vigilant with livestock and keep them secure. Farm animals are usually killed at night, so bring them inside in the evening. It is an offence to attract wildlife into a residential neighbourhood. Those who do not take steps to deter bears and other wild creatures can face a fine of up to $575. To help people coexist with creatures that are simply trying to survive but can be dangerous if provoked, the following information is offered:

Reduce the smell of food by keeping barbecues clean. Keep pet food inside. Garbage is the WARNING biggest attraction for bears so keep it secure and inaccessible Langley has a large to wildlife. Do not leave garbage deer population cans out overnight: keep them USE CAUTION in the house, a locked garage, or secured outbuilding that cannot be ON ROADS broken into by large, smart bears. Put them out only on the morning of collection. If you are worried about odour, keep garbage in the freezer until collection day. Do not use bird feeders, as they attract bears and the birds do not need seeds when other natural food sources are available. This is the time of year to be extra vigilant with small pets, especially cats, in areas where coyotes are around.

The Township of Langley is full of wildlife habitat, and residents share the area with animals including bears, cougars, and coyotes. While residents throughout Langley do not need to be continually on alert, there are a number of actions that can be taken to deter wild animals if they are spotted in your area. Parents are encouraged to educate their children on what to do if they encounter any of these animals, especially if they play by themselves in areas that wildlife frequent or have been seen in the past.

Aldergrove U17 Vipers team captain Tobias Meier and players from the Aldergrove U17 Vipers presented the Food Bank with a cheque for $520, funds raised throughout the 2012 season. It all started two years ago when the team decided to run a fundraiser “$1 goal/$1 shut-out” for members of the Vipers family who were affected and recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The players had a very successful season and managed to collect nearly $700 that was divided evenly and distributed to those members so they could donate to an area of choice within cancer fundraising. For the 2012 season the players, who mostly reside in the Aldergrove,

Langley and Abbotsford area decided it would be a great idea to continue with the fundraising and this time give back to the

community they support through sports. The Aldergrove Food Bank was this season’s choice. They hope to con-

tinue with this fundraising tradition for their last season with Aldergrove Youth Soccer starting in September.

Help outrun cancer in our town Aldergrove Star

“My quest would not be a selfish one. I could not leave knowing these faces and feelings would still exist, even though I would be set free from mine,” said Terry Fox. The people who look for the possibilities in an impossible task often make the difference, and Terry Fox was one of those people. It was Terry’s determination towards his ultimate goal – to outrun cancer – that exemplifies the importance of leading by example. Terry ran 5,373 kilometres and 143 days with the goal of seeking a cure for those affected by cancer and giving those around him something to hold onto: hope. Last year, the community of Aldergrove was without a volunteer run organizer. The Terry Fox Foundation would like to keep the storied tradition alive in this

community, and needs your help. By becoming a run organizer, you become an integral part of carrying Terry’s torch and helping Aldergrove contribute towards finding a cure for cancer. Last year, the Terry Fox Foundation raised over $26 million for cancer research, and with your help they aim to build from that. The foundation will help anyone who is interested in volunteering to be an organizer through the planning process. It is important that someone steps forward immediately for this meaningful cause, as the run is fast approaching and is taking place on Sunday, Sept. 15. “It would be such a shame for the people of Aldergrove to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry’s legacy alive as every community no matter how big or small

can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000,” says Donna White, provincial director for the Terry Fox Foundation BC-Yukon. “Every contribution matters, and like Terry, we will continue to work together to outrun cancer.” If you are interested in becoming the Aldergrove volunteer run organizer, please contact Donna White, provincial director at the Terry Fox Foundation by email at bcyukon@terryfoxrun.org or by phone at 1-888-836-9786. Remember, the runs are noncompetitive and all inclusive; the registration fee is by donation and there is no minimum pledge amount.
