A whirlwind of action has blown through Castlegar, leaving a city beautified by more than 30 one-of-akind works of art. Sculpturewalk 2013 has hit the ground and the assorted gems are tastefully scattered across our urban setting, there to be enjoyed at all times by all onlookers. This is the fourth staging of the event, and is naturally and positively progressing according to Castlegar Sculpturewalk Executive Director Joy Barrett: “We’re increasing in size each year. This year we have 31 sculptures which is up one from last year. I believe they started in the low 20s.” Organizers have been casting a bigger net for talent ever since the first effort back in 2010. “The reach of our artists is increasing,” Barrett continued. “We have Regine Neumann who has
flown in from Quebec with her piece (Rhythm of Being, outside RCMP detachment) this year. We have an Ontario artist, we have quite a few again from the ‘states… people driving in and flying in from all over to take part. We still heavily showcase local (Kootenays, Columbia Basin) artists, but we’re also getting a wider scope,” she explained. The May 25 gala at the Kootenay Gallery topped off a day-full of intense installation. “It was wonderful,” Barrett recalled on May 28. “I think it was the largest showing of artists that we’ve ever had in attendance. We had lots of sponsors and supporters.” A firm stipulation for this year’s would-be entrants was that they would have to have their work installed on the May 25th date… no exceptions. “I was pretty strict in the application,” said Barrett of the requirement. In year’s past there had been some who,
for whatever reason did not have their work up and on display with the rest. “I said if they’re not ready on installation day, we’re not going to put them up. For one thing, the voting starts right away. So if a work doesn’t come out for a month after, they’re missing out on the people’s choice voting.” The 31 works are now on display and voting is underway. Worth noting is the fact that 19 works from previous years, which have been leased or purchased also remain for the enjoyment of art lovers. Ballots for this year’s crop are available from the four boxes along the downtown tour. Full brochures with maps will be out next week… in the boxes, from the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce, and the Sculpturewalk office at 276 Columbia Avenue. Voting goes until the end of Sept. but the pieces will remain on display until the take-down next April.

A strong turnout of area residents greeted a group of FortisBC PowerSense personnel and assorted providers of energy-efficient products and services on Tuesday night at the Castlegar Complex. The event was called an ‘Enervention,’ part of the Kootenay Energy Diet and those on hand were keen to find out all they could from the authorities on hand. Civic officials including City of Castlegar councillors Kevin Chernoff and Dan Rye were there as well, two homeowners who had personally signed up for the helpful energy audit. It’s a long-standing gag among touring musicians who’ve criss-crossed the map over the years, doing everything from one-nighters to twoweek engagements back in the day when live music was king. “Small town, but they really know how to party,” is how the saying goes, and it has probably been used to describe every burg from east coast to west. Speaking of Castlegar, the saying cuts a bit of ice. Few, if any occasions around here are allowed to elapse without some sort of wing-ding. We’ve got the Spring Fling, the Kootenay and Bluegrass Festivals, the Pass Creek Fall Fair, Winterfest... and Sunfest, the party held each year on the first weekend in June.

Sunfest is surely something special for Castlegar and all our close neighbours, and it’s clearly something the local government is happy to support. “I think it’s a premier attraction for Featured Speaker the community,” said Mayor Chernoff. “There’s really no NDP Critic for Energy and Natural Resources other way to express it. Castlegar Sunfest Committee President Nicole Beetstra is pleased to accept a cheque for $15,000 from the City of Castlegar, delivered by Mayor Chernoff on May 24 at City Hall. Jim Sinclair
Nicole Beetstra is the first-year president of the Castlegar Sunfest Committee, and she was most pleased to accept, on behalf of the commiittee, a cheque in the amount of $15,000 from Mayor Chernoff on Friday. Big things are planned for the event Beetstra says keeps
getting bigger and better every year. An infusion of capital like the one forked over by the City of Castlegar goes a long way toward keeping that growth happening. “It’s definitely a big reason why Sunfest is allowed to continue,” said the president at City Hall that afternoon.
“Of course everyone who takes part and helps out is very much appreciated,” said Beetstra, “but the city is the biggest contributor to Sunfest.” With ball tournaments, live bands (this year the hugely popular BC/DC, and Beatles tribute act Fab Forever) a Sunfest event at Element Club

Visitors are so enriching
It’s a delightful fact, the host gets as much out of a chance encounter as the one who is the world traveller, and good sur‑ prises, too. You may have first hand experience with the concept, maybe having had guests from exotic locations, maybe just a short how-do-you-do in passing. But even if very brief, the encounter can be most re‑ warding. Here at the Castlegar News, on the busy publishing Wednesday this week, we were treated to a visit from Giovana Lopes, a Rotary-sponsored traveler who was ar‑ ranged to spend some time doing a bit of work with us. It was never said out loud, but at least one of us was thinking, ‘we’ll have to make things nice and easy for her when she gets here. This can be a high pressure, hectic environment... don’t want her to freak out, or anything like that.’ Giovana proved a very capable and effi‑ cient proof reader after receiving her first assignment. Then it was off for a short photo opportunity and an equally short write up of a couple of community events. She was back in no time flat, posed for a couple of photos with some of us. Then she was saying her goodbyes. She was asked if she lived in a very big town, and what part of Brazil was it? About 400,000 people she said of the city in Sao Paulo State. ‘Interested in journalism as a career?’ “It is my career,” she said. “I teach it in university.” We want to hear from you.

Education is the key I love to see animals in the wild. In fact, when my husband and I are out and about in the car we are always scanning the area hoping that some‑ thing, anything, will jump out from a thicket of trees or shrubs. It matters naught to us if it is “just” a squirrel or a rabbit. We enjoy seeing them for sure, but we really get pumped if we see a coyote, bear, deer, elk or moose ‑ espe‑ cially a moose. I remember working at Trail Hospi‑ tal in the mid-80s. One early morning I was travelling to work from Castlegar when I rounded the large curve near Genelle and a moose ambled out in front of me. He was huge and beauti‑ fully majestic. Just as he got in front of the car he stopped, turned his head and looked straight at me. At that time I was driving a Honda and I knew that if the moose decided to charge that lit‑ tle Honda was little protection against him. So I waited until he decided to continue his trek. I likely wasn’t any more than 10 feet or so away from him and so I was treated to this beautiful, up close and personal encounter with the wild. Until the day I die I will never forget how I could see his nostrils flare and almost count each and every hair on his body. It’s unlikely that I will ever see that sort of thing again with a front row seat. Recently there have been reports of Marvin Beatty Reporter

cougars being seen near Broadwater Road and Pass Creek Road. Cougars! Reading local online news and social media sites, it’s been interesting to view the comments from everyone. While almost everyone appreciates their beauty, there are those with pets and children who have real concerns regarding the cougars’ proximity to them. I can appreciate that. So what are we to do when the boundaries between man and wild‑ life become blurred? There are those who say the animals have every right to roam and that it is we humans who are encroaching upon their territory. Their simple solution is to learn to live with wildlife and give the cougars a wide berth. Then there are those who say they have every right to live their life safely and without fear of their pets or chil‑ dren being mauled by the cougars. As far as they are concerned they want conservation officers to rid them of the felines in whatever manner it takes, whether it be relocating or kill‑ ing them. Therein lies the problem. These huge cats are territorial. The females and their kittens live in groups and thus when ranges overlap it’s not hy‑ percritical to those female groups. While male ranges might occasional‑ ly overlap with female ranges, they do Chris Hopkyns Publisher

not overlap with other male ranges. Therefore relocating cougars is not the best answer if one is relocating a male. So, that leaves the other option. You know, the one where the conservation officer is pressured to kill the perceived threat. I wouldn’t want their job for all the tea in China. I don’t know what the answer is. It’s likely that as we encroach more and more into their territory these sightings will become more common. With slowly dwindling deer popu‑ lations (one of their main sources of food) these cats will look to other food sources. I’m talking Fido, Trixie and possibly small humans. Possibly we should look into ways to increase the wild game population. Until then, all I can say is keep your pets and children close to you and if you should encounter a cougar faceto-face, don’t run – they will consider you prey if you run. It’s recommended that instead you should make intense eye contact, make yourself appear larg‑ er, and shout loudly but calmly. Appar‑ ently sticks used in defense work too, but I would rather not find that out on my own. The best thing you can do is educate yourself about cougars. If anything, you will find yourself learning more about these beautiful animals, and that can’t be bad. Sandy Leonard Production

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
-Joseph Hughes Nothing makes a community stronger than the desire to see each other reach goals and dreams. I am so honoured by the words of support before and after the election. Through this roller coaster adventure, it was those words that helped my family rise again from the challenging lows. To those who contributed money, wow! I have never considered sending money to someone looking for election. To be given hard earned money to go forward and fight for our rights and representation against such odds is again such an honour. I hope I earned your support. The task was insurmountable and I truly would not have attempted it if it wasn’t for the support I felt this community had. My wife Carlee did more in the last month than I knew a person could, and my children were along the whole way. Janet and Crystal Spicer-

“The more citizens we have engaged in discussing our lives, the better, and that is politics at its finest.” Cindy McCallum-Miller The conference is a wonderful local opportunity for our community to hear from people who will directly experience the impact of pipelines carrying bitumen tar across our province. It will allow us a rare opportunity to gather and reflect on the importance of protecting our fragile environment; the water we drink and the land that sustains us. Enbridge and their friends have spared no expense in attempting to thwart a public debate. The
Harper government has removed many of our democratic environmental protections in an attempt to allow inevitably harmful practices to be quickly approved. Many decisions are removed from the general population by bureaucracy so it is refreshing when our local representatives want to encourage public participation and education on important matters. I am really impressed that KRUNA and the other conference sponsors care enough about my ability as a citizen to gain information about an important issue that might impact my quality of life here in the West Kootenays, and that we have a director who supports organizations who are fostering debate. At the very least, I hope your question will peak additional interest in the conference. The more citizens that we have engaged in discussing our lives, the better, and that is politics at its finest. –Cindy McCallum Miller, Castlegar

To the free citizens of Kootenay West, I owe you thanks. From family and friends to the thousands who made their voice clear on the election ballot, thank you. I chose to step forward to represent you and the support I received was amazing. The calls, e-mails and talks on the street were so empowering. Rock On!
Capital trip... Continued from P. A9
“This trip made it personal for me,” she said. “It reinforced the concept that if I was concerned about some issue, I could contact the elected representatives and help make changes.” That sort of statement is music to her teacher’s ears. Martin happens to be particularly keen on democratic engagement. In fact, she had heard about the Provincial Capital Commission’s Capital for Kids travel funding program while attending an intensive four-day workshop in Victoria with the BC Teachers’ Institute on Parliamentary Democracy. The PCC’s funding assistance allowed her to share her passion with her students.

“A trip to Victoria is not feasible for us without the Capital for Kids funding,” she said. Experiencing the Capital first hand is education at its finest, she noted. “Students get to see the real-life workings of a Capital as well as learn about the history of the province. “They can read about it all they want, but seeing it in person brings it home. Everything we’ve been studying was there. It’s a valuable piece to their education.” – Susan McLean, Provincial Capital Commission For more information on the Provincial Capital Commission and the Capital for Kids program, visit www.bcpcc.com

CENTRAL
IDENTIFYING YOUR GARDEN PREFERENCES
A
personal garden is only limited by the constraints of a person’s imagination. The vast array of plants and flowers available from all over the world can turn anyone’s yard into a melange of functional spaces. When designing a garden, many homeowners do not know where to begin. Much like decorating the interior of a home, how a garden landscape is executed depends on various factors. Climate and conditions The foremost consideration when planting a garden is the climate where the garden will be located. Planting items that are not conducive to growing in certain conditions can be counterintuitive and a waste of money and effort. Prospective gardeners must become familiar with the hardiness zones of their region prior to making any plans. This will help you to determine which types of plants will thrive on your landscape. Once this is determined, examination of the soil and conditions on the property is also helpful. Taking this step will help identify any plant deterrents, such as poor soil quality and pH as well as any pests that may impede plant growth. If you live in a hot, sandy location, lush tropical plants may not thrive. Therefore, even if you desire a Mediterranean look, you may have to settle for something that works better with your landscape conditions. Style of the home Landscaping designs often tie into the architectural style of a home. For example, an extensive Asianinspired garden complete with koi pond and bonsai may look odd in front of a log home. Keep architecture in mind when planning a garden so the look of the home you present is cohesive and fits with the
community and immediate vicinity. Design preferences Are you a free spirit who doesn’t conform to convention with firm boundaries? Or are you one who likes order and things in their place? Knowing what makes you tick will help you to choose a gardening style that will be easier to maintain and also make you feel comfortable. For example, prairie-style planting or wildflower gardens are dramatic ways to create natural points of color over a large area. Most plants are allowed to grow as they may. Those who like a dreamy ethereal feel to their gardens may be inspired by cottage designs, where generously filled borders overflow into a flower and foliage paradise. If you are more inclined to follow the rules and like an orderly landscape, a parterre, or formal planting bed, may be more your style. When carefully pruned, box hedging can show off symmetry and geometry in your space. Some people are more focused on the accents in their gardens than the plants themselves. Modern architecture pairs well with a contemporary style that blends minimalist accents and easy-to-maintain plants. Although you can change plants in your garden, investing in a garden that you will be happy with for a long time is a costly venture. You may want to consult a landscape architect or local nursery to find the plants and trees that fit with your design and lifestyle. These experts can also instruct you in how to maintain all of your hard work and when to expect the full impact of your new landscape to take form. Homeowners can browse ideas for gardens in magazines and online, but ultimately it will be up to their personal design preferences and the climate where their home is located to determine which garden will look and grow best.

Professional Cook Training
Pictured above, on May 22 the Castlegar Senior Citizens branch 46 honoured those members who were 80 years or older. A tea was held to, in some way, thank those who have contributed to the association for so long. 48 guests turned out to enjoy an afternoon of sandwiches, veggies, fruit, tea and coffee prepared by many volunteers and served up by the gentlemen in white shirts and bow ties. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon visit with old friends and left with a smile on their face and a carnation in hand.

Economics of Happiness Mir Centre for Peace Summer Institute: The Economics of Happiness
This interactive workshop will critically examine how our conventional methods of measuring progress, and important decisions based on these methods, have led to a disconnection among humans, and between humans and the environment. This workshop follows a series of community peace cafés that were held in Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks and New Denver, facilitated by Dr. Roly Russell, founder of Grand Forks’ Sandhill Institute. Saturday saw a mixed bag of weather at the Castlegar golf course. We saw some sun, rain, wind, but no snow. Braden McKay, from Redstone, made his first appearance on the circuit this year after sitting out the last six weeks with a wrist
injury and earned a two stroke victory over Tyler McKay, from Birchbank. Braden posted a one over par round of 73 while Tyler came in with a 75 taking the 17 and 18 year old division. Carson Arcuri from Granite Point had another solid performance winning the 15

Andrew Savinkoff Sadly the family of Andrew Savinkoff of Nelson, BC, formerly of Winlaw, BC wishes to announce his passing at Nelson Jubilee Manor, on Monday, April 22, 2013, blessed with 79 year of life. Andrew was born in Thrums on September 7, 1933 to parents Helen and Fred Savinkoff. The family moved to Winlaw when Andrew was 3 years old. He attended the Winlaw school up to grade 8 and then worked on his parents farm, growing vegetables and selling them in the surrounding communities. Andrew’s working life continued with CP Rail, driving snowplow, a first attendant in a local sawmill, moving up to mill personnel and safety manager. In his spare time, Andrew worked as a paramedic based out of Slocan and he also taught Industrial First Aid throughout the West Kootenay. Andrew was an umpire for a men’s baseball league and a head coach of the Winlaw Little League baseball team. He liked to fish in the local river and creeks and became an avid golfer in his senior years. Andrew was devastated by the death of two sons, Kenny in 1978 and Raymond in 1995. Left to mourn his loss is his wife Elsie, son Wayne, granddaughters Alexandra and Raya and sister Anne Polonikoff. Daisy Elizabeth Welsh 1919–2013 Sadly the family of Daisy Elizabeth Welsh of Castlegar, wishes to announce her passing at Talarico Place Care Centre on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, blessed with 93 years of life. Daisy Welsh (née Callison) was born in 1919 to Fred and Dora Callison, who had just emigrated to the Peace River country. Daisy and her brother, Dennis, were the first white twins born in the Dawson Creek area. They were the eighth and ninth children in a family of true pioneers. Life was hard, but family ties were strong. Living life close to nature and being dependent on it had a huge impact on Daisy’s life. She had a great appreciation for the beauty of the landscape and its wildlife, and captured this on canvas and in other mediums. She taught art in the sixties. The Callisons were horse people. Even during the last years of her life, Daisy’s idea of a dream vacation was to be able to ride her tall, black mare, Lady Black, over the mountains. In 1935, when she was 16, she went on a three-month expedition through the Cassiar Mountain Range with her father’s pack string of 60 horses. She kept a diary during the trip, and in 2004 “Mountain Trails” was published. A copy of it is in the Library of Congress in Washington DC, as it is a record of a historical trip. She also wrote about the building of the Keenlyside Dam and its impact on families in the area who were forced to abandon their homes. Daisy had a very full life. As one grandson said, “Before women’s liberation, there was Grandma!” She built rock fireplaces, renovated houses and performed various other tasks deemed to be “unladylike” at the time. One of her pet peeves was that she wasn’t as strong as a man. She beautified every place she lived with her interior decorating and lovely gardens. She was predeceased by two husbands, Ryder Havdale in 1972 and Lorne Welsh in 1990. She outlived all her mother’s children but has three surviving half-siblings from her father’s second marriage; Dempsey Callison (Smithers), Jerry Callison (Saanichton), and Annie Launsbury (Chilliwack). She leaves behind three children; Wanda Zappitelli (Courtney), Bill (Cindy) Havdale (Tsawassen), and Julie Havdale (Castlegar), and four grandchildren; Steele (Tammy) Jones, Ryder, Leif, and Heidi Havdale, and two great-grandsons, Austin and Wyatt Jones. Her extended family is huge and she will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff at Talarico Place for the wonderful care given Daisy at the end of her life.

Englund, Dr. Roy Emil Englund, Dr. Roy Emil – Roy died at home in Halifax surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 26th, 2013. A man who devoted his whole life to health, healing, and learning Roy handled his illness as he did every part of his life. He impressed and inspired everyone with his determination and strength. His open approach and incredible mind led him beyond traditional medicine to alternatives from all areas which he incorporated into every aspect of his life and the lives of people who met him. A sensitive man who always wanted to be helping he was there for, or engrossed in the search for answers for, everyone who asked. The son of Swedish immigrants, Signe Maria (Andersson) and Johann Emil Englund, Roy and his twin brother Ralph (1937-2008) were born in Trail, BC on February 10th, 1937. He grew up in Castlegar, BC where he excelled in sports and in school, earning scholarships for University. He attended Notre Dame University, BC and Carleton University, Ont, before moving to Nova Scotia to study Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax. After graduating he served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Medical Officer while doing his Residency in Orthopaedics. He was one of the first orthopaedic surgeons trained in the Dalhousie Medical School Orthopaedic program; because of this, and his role as mentor to those who came after, he was affectionately known as “The Godfather” by his colleagues and residents. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. While running a very busy practice, at the Halifax Infirmary, he also lectured at Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. He was a member of the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and the Nova Scotia Medical Association. He constantly endeavoured to increase his skill and knowledge, traveling the world to attend many post-fellowship courses over the years. Roy had an unbridled exuberance for everything he did in life. He loved his family, friends, being in the operating room, golfing, skiing, travel, adventures, and music. He was always the loudest voice singing even if he didn’t know the words. He was also an excellent dancer and his partners had to be prepared to be flipped upside down at any point. He was always the life of the party, always spontaneous, leaving a trail of unbelievable “Roy” stories in his wake. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dianne (Belmore) Englund. She has been the love and best friend, who organized his professional and personal lives, is the mother of his 3 children, and supported him always. He is also survived by his 3 children Sonja, Kristel, and Leif; his beloved granddaughter Lily Englund, and his pal Cheddar. He will also be deeply missed by his 6 sisters-in-law, 5 brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Besides his parents, Roy is pre-deceased by his twin brother Ralph, sister Rose, grand-daughter Gessica, in-laws Bernie and Dolly Belmore, brother in-law Gordon Price, and sister in-law Shirley-Dale Easley. Roy was always positive and he challenged the limits in health encouraging others to do the same. He pushed himself toward perfection always, excelling in almost everything. Healing was his passion and he deeply cared about the well being of every individual. He was multifaceted with unparalleled knowledge. The loss of his humour, wisdom, insight, guidance, love and caring will leave a void in the lives of many. Visitation will take place at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Hfx, NS on Friday, May 31st from 6 to 8 pm. A celebration of Roy’s Life will be held at Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave., Hfx, NS on Saturday, June 1st at 2 pm. Please respect a scent free environment. The family would like to thank Dr. J.F. Legare, Dr. John Sullivan, Sonya Osmond, Melissa Cavicchi, and all the rest of the wonderful nurses and staff of 7.1, the Cardiac Care Unit, at the QEII Hospital in Halifax. Thanks to the VON, especially Cory Mackenzie, and Bayshore, especially Doreen and Marc. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Doctors Without Borders Dr. Roy Englund Memorial Fund http://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/campaign/ DrEnglund To view or send a condolence to the family please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com

Ken had wide ranging topics of interest from politics, philosophy, sociology, archeology, history and mythology. He loved music, particularly fiddle music, and bag pipe music. He and Helga shared a love for travel and the outdoors; spending summers camping and winters back- country skiing. Ken was an environmentalist and actively supported organizations promoting environmental protection. Ken is survived by his wife, Helga, children, Kevin, (Wanda), Michael, (Rita), and Colleen, (Brian), grandchildren Colleen, Jeannine, Alex, Erin, Karlene, James and Robert, sister Colleen and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents and 2 sisters precede Ken in death. There is no service by request. Ken’s wish was that those remaining think briefly, individually or as a small group, about the memory of the life ended.
