Caitlin MacDonald is joining the Walk to Cure Diabetes.

By Jennifer Lang Having type I diabetes hasn’t stopped Caitlin MacDonald from doing anything she’s set out to accomplish – whether it’s winning a blueberry pie eating contest, playing high school lacrosse, rugby and soccer, or devising clever ways to help spread her awareness message. Last year, she completed an updated version of How to Survive High School with Type I Diabetes, a pamphlet she wrote offering sensible, real-life advice to School District 36 students making the transition to high school. But since diabetics appear healthy, others may not realize how serious a condition it is. Complications can include blindness, nerve problems and even amputations and death if people don’t take proper care of themselves.

Another teacher, mistaking an insulin pump for a cell phone, kicked her out of class. With stories like those, it’s easy to understand why she’s determined to spread awareness and do what she can to find a cure. Now that she’s wrapped up her latest semester at school she plans to continue advocating and volunteering for the Juve-

In a similar vein, we received a troubling email a couple of weeks ago from a reader named Tracy, who relayed a distressing incident that occurred at a busy local intersection. She was stopped at the light at 64 Avenue, first in line in the left hand turn lane, waiting to go south on 176 Street, after the advance green had turned amber. That’s when Tracy was honked at by a driver

in an SUV who was infuriated that she didn’t go through the amber light. Tracy didn’t proceed, enduring the wrath of the driver behind her. THE This, barely a week after five famH ily members died instantly in a tragic collision at 176 Street and 32 Avenue. The driver of the van that slammed into the Sachdeva family’s vehicle also died. It turns out an underlying mediTH cal condition contributed to the accident. But for those of us who are haunted by that tragedy, that doesn’t make it any easier to understand why so many drivers out there are angry, and so willing to act on that anger. As Tracy wonders, “OMG, lady, don’t you see the TV news, hear the radio, read the local paper, or even know what an orange or red light means? Please take a defensive driving course, attend the funeral of the family of five that perished because someone went through a red light, then, hand in your license.” Exactly. E

about posting their own rodeo and parade pictures to Twitter. Without a doubt, people love seeing their neighbours having fun, and being part of a communal celebration that exudes so much goodwill into OF Surrey. A pity then that social media has been the source of what may form the lasting image of the 67th Cloverdale Rodeo and 125th Country Fair – YouTube video of an epithet and expletive-ridden exchange between two women who have both already admitted they should have acted differently.

A big tip of the hat to the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair – and the army of dedicated volunteers who make it their mission to pull off one of the biggest and best events of its kind. And kudos also for sticking with the invitational rodeo format, which dates back to 2008, when organizers ditched controversial events, such as cattle-roping, in response to pressure from animal rights organizations. It was a difficult decision because it meant losing status as a sanctioned rodeo. Cloverdale Rodeo contestants don’t earn the points they need to compete on the seasonal rodeo circuit, vying instead for a cash payout. And that means the Cloverdale Rodeo puts up thousands in prize money. When gate sales are down due to poor weather, it’s an unenviable balancing act. This year they were forced once again to dip into next year’s City of Surrey grant. The format is a hit. And Canada’s secondlargest community rodeo, amazingly, has never lost touch with its small town roots. For a week, everyone’s an honorary cowboy or cowgirl, something social media drove home in spades this year. People couldn’t get enough of the photo galleries posted to our Facebook page and website, and were so enthusiastic

His Royal Highness the Duke of York, left, presents Cloverdale’s Erik Hilmer with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold Certificate at a formal ceremony at Government House.

As good as gold Prince Edward honours two Cloverdale youths By Jennifer Lang A Fraser Downs employee and a Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary student have achieved a prestigious honour. Erik Hilmer and Shelby Priest are two of 11 Surrey youth who received the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gold certificates on May 18 at Government House in Victoria. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the program. His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York was on hand to present gold certificates to the 100 B.C. recipients of the gold award.

A Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary alumni and graduate from the University of British Columbia (B.Sc.), Hilmer completed the requirements for the award through a series of community activities, skills and outdoor adventures in Croatia and Scotland. Hilmer works as the marketing coordinator at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. It’s not the first time Priest has hobnobbed with dignitaries – she earned her silver Duke of Edinburgh award in 2011, when B.C.’s then Lt.-Gov. SteSee ADVENTUROUS / Page 6

Certain herbs contain pharmacologically active tranquilizing ingredients. These include Valerian root, hops, lemon balm, passion flower, skullcap, and chamomile. EZ Sleep® made by Nature’s Way contains a combination of these herbs and can be tried. People who are chronically stressed feel tired and exhausted yet they cannot fall asleep. This is because they have raised cortisol levels from an overactive adrenal gland. Some herbs are known to lower cortisol level and they include Rhodiola, magnolia, and ashwgandha. Rhodiola Plus® (Douglas Lab) is a combination of these herbs and is the best example of this approach. Many a time a stressed patient needs something to lower their cortisol level as well as something to “knock him/her out”. In this case a combination of a herbal tranquilizer and an adrenal supporting agent will work best. Seditol Plus® (Douglas Lab) contains rhodiola and tranquillizing herbs and is an example for this approach. Sleep Tonite® can help the body deal with cortisol and induce alpha-waves in the brain, thus promoting a deep sense of relaxation. Some people wake up with night-mares like a panic attack. A homeopathic Echinacea Angustisfolia preparation called Anz Ease® (Terry Naturally) works well for this situation. For those cannot fall asleep because their mind is full of unwanted thoughts or they bring their worries to bed, there is a Bach Flower Remedy called White Chestnut that helps people to eliminate unwanted thoughts from their mind. Better still, take Rescue Sleep® which has White Chestnut

blood tells the body that it is time to relax and rest. The pineal gland stops secreting melatonin when the sun rises, and the body returns to a state of alertness. This endocrine gland memorizes the day and night rhythm where we live and when we move to a different part of the world, this memory is retained and hence sleep pattern of the new location is not recognized. At this time, taking melatonin either as an oral tablet or sublingual lozenges will help the body to adjust faster. Melatonin should not be needed for more than a few nights, and when used properly, the body will not get addicted to it. It is best suited for shift workers and international flight crews. It does not work on all types of insomnia. For example, it is not very effective in insomnia due to stress, anxiety, or over-excitement. A possible side effect of melatonin is wild dreams and restless sleep. Lifestyle plays an important role in sleep patterns. Start a regular exercise program. Avoid strong spices and MSG in your food. Cut down on coffee, strong teas, nicotine, and alcohol. Before you go to bed, take a warm shower, eat a few cookies, and drink two ounces of warm milk. A little bit of food and milk neutralize the acid in the stomach so adrenaline production is minimized. Read something relaxing in bed. This will dissociate your mind from your day activities. Soft music and a relaxing aromatherapy mist in the room also help. Pay attention to room temperature and proper blankets. Finally, say a prayer and keep repeating until you pass out. Some of the kids who plundered their piggy banks pose at A.J. McLellan Elementary School along with school principal Jas Atwal, left, realtor Scott Moe, and Parent Advisory Council president Lisa Reid.

School playground ‘benefits everyone,’ says Realtor Moe From page one

“I thought this was a good cause, because everyone uses the park,” says Moe, who, as a Realtor, looks at a school playground as an important selling point because it’s a community amenity. “Oh, for sure. It benefits everyone that lives around here, and the kids, of course, use it. It’s a good way to spend some money,” he smiles, adding he hopes his involvement will spur other businesses to invest in school fundraising projects including this one. It didn’t take much argument to convince members of the school community to contribute to the cause. Along with Moe’s $2,500, the Dollars for Dragons coin drive brought in an additional $3,200 and counting, as kids cracked open their piggy banks and

convinced their elders to donate what they could. One boy’s grandmother – a 96-year-old woman – had “buckets of silver” coins stashed in her closet that she wanted to donate, recalls Firth. “She wasn’t joking. It was actual buckets! I said, what are you, a pirate?” Firth’s son excavated the contents of his piggy bank – unplundered since his birth – only to turn up a mysterious folded piece of paper among the coins. It was a dollar bill. That went into the donation kitty, too. “It is really touching how badly our students want to get this new structure built,” Firth says. Donations can be made in person at 16545 61 Avenue or by calling 604-574-7296. For more information, email ajpac@shaw.ca.

The school playground committee has also applied for grants, along with holding cookie sales, a carnival night and other fundraisers. They’ve also gone to the source for inspiration, asking students to draw their dream playground. “Every single kid put in swings, and we don’t have a swing,” Firth says. The playground committee has set a target of $75,000. But they’re not there yet. Another $25,000 needs to be raised. “That’s why we’re pushing this. It’s really for the whole community.” The money would pay for additional playground equipment that’s designed for students in primary grades. The playground already has a spider web, zipline and climbing equipment – items that are perfect for bigger kids in Grades 5 to 7, but are literally out of reach to younger, and thereI have just returned from a 7 night cruise through Holland fore shorter, kids. and Belgium aboard the AMA Certo. stage next month. The Fab Fourever is a Beatles tribute band that’s headlining a fundraiser at Cascades Casino in support of Langley Lodge. They look and sound like the real thing, according to their fans. The B.C.-based act covers the Liverpudlian lads’ greatest hits, from the Cavern Club era to the psychedelia of Abbey Road and Let It Be. The Fab Fourever stars Jody Tennant as Paul, Kevin Davey as John, Jean-Luc Perron as George, Paul Kaszonyi as Ringo, with Blake Mackay on keyboards and piano. Presented by Langley Lodge Auxiliary to the Langley Care Society, the show is Sunday, June 9 (5 p.m.) at Langley Cascades Casino Summit Theatre. There’s also a silent auction. Langley Lodge is a not-for-profit accredited healthcare facility providing complex care and services to seniors. It has 139 beds and has 24-hour nursing staff. “It’s mainly for seniors,” says Damien

Cloverdale is a hotbed of young musical talent, and one of its brightest rising stars will be appearing at a coffee house Friday. Singer-songwriter Joe Given, 20, has recently taken time off from his university studies to focus on his music career, and to support his new album, So Much More. He’s performing from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, May 31 at Wired Monk Coventry Cloverdale, located at the corner of 64 Avenue and 184 Street. So Much More, a pop and indie rockinfluenced album, features nine original songs – seven written by Given. You can also listen to his music at JoeGiven.com, where you’ll find a list of upcoming performances, including an afternoon set at Surrey Fest on June 15.

Lawson, vice president of the Langley Lodge Auxiliary, who adds the facility has 139 beds and 24-hour nursing staff. “But we also have young people who require that level of care.” The facility was recently granted exemplary status by Accreditation Canada, making it one of five such complexes in the country, Lawson said. Year-round, the auxiliary raises money for Langley Lodge through plant sales, raffles, a concession at the Langley Cruise-in and more. The auxiliary’s biggest fundraiser of the year is the annual gala in October. Net proceeds from the matinee concert will help purchase essential nursing equipment: two ceiling lifts. Each lift cost about $5,000. “We’re hoping to get a couple,” Lawson said. Tickets are $30 from Cascades Casino (604-530-2211), Langley Lodge and Valley Evergreen Pharmacy.

Hot Dogs in Cars Lorie Chortyk

for the Cloverdale pet and the people who love them

“Dog days of summer” can be dangerous With summer fast approaching, it’s time to remind pet guardians across B.C. about the serious consequences for pets left inside cars on hot days. Every year, the SPCA receives hundreds of complaints about dogs left in hot cars because many people still don’t grasp the danger of this situation. Even if you park in the shade and it seems cool outside when you leave, the sun can change direction and heat up a car’s interior in no time. Many people assume they will be just a few minutes at a bank or convenience store, only to be delayed and return too late to save their pet. Pets left in hot cars can begin to suffer irreparable brain damage or death in as little as 10 minutes! If you see a dog languishing in a hot car, please call the BC SPCA animal cruelty hotline (1-855-622-7722) the RCMP or your local police. Before the authorities arrive, members of the public can help prevent a tragedy by attempting to find the animal’s guardian. If the car is in a mall or grocery store parking lot, for example, ask to have the owner paged over the building’s

PA system. Return to the car to monitor the dog’s condition. In addition to not leaving pets in the car at this time of year, guardians should use caution when exercising their pets under the sweltering summer sun. A lot of dogs will run and play to the point of exhaustion, and it’s the guardian’s responsibility to make sure that doesn’t happen.

• Fan vigorously to promote evaporation; • Allow the dog to drink some cool water; and • Take the dog to a veterinarian. For more tips on how to keep your pet safe and happy this summer, visit spca.bc.ca.

Signs of heatstroke in pets: • Exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting); • Rapid or erratic pulse; • Salivation; • Weakness and muscle tremors; • Lack of coordination; • Convulsions or vomiting; and • Collapse. If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke, you should: • Immediately move the animal to a cool, shady place; • Wet the dog with cool water (do not apply ice as it constricts blood flow);
