ho knew there were so many craft beer lovers in Vancouver? The organizers of Vancouver Craft Beer Week. Since ticket sales opened last month, many of the events that celebrate good, artisanal beer have sold out (including the opening night gala at the Roundhouse). By pairing great beers with some of this city’s finest chefs and restaurants, foodies and beer geeks can share their passions with one another. (What happens after the event is up to them.) ince its launch in 2010, Vancouver Craft Beer Week has impressively grown from 10 participating breweries close to 70 this year. While it’s a problem that the organizers love to have, this level of enthusiasm has its challenges. “Our final event last year sold out so we needed a bigger venue this year,” says Chris Bjerrisgard, co-founder and marketing manager for VCBW. “Finding bigger venues in Vancouver isn’t that easy — especially because of our

criteria like being near transit, having access to hotels as well as our safety standards.” But while planning the annual nine-day event, the VCBW team found the perfect space for the wrap-up party at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond. Sponsored by Earls Kitchen + Bar and the Donnelly Group, the two-day finale will host patrons on a massive patio and two large beer halls, with more than 50 local and international breweries participating and offering their fermentations to thirsty visitors. On June 7, the two-day VCBW Beer Festival kicks off at the River

Rock’s outdoor patio from 5 to 7pm. More than 50 breweries, from as near as your neighbourhood to as far as Belgium, will be participating. Van Dusen Gardens are beautiful at any time of year but there are times when the plants and trees put on a show to rival the annual Festival of Lights. One of those times is now. The Laburnum Walk is earning its reputation of being one of the most photographed spots in the garden. The Laburnum x watereri ‘Vossili’ are hybrid trees that, when in bloom, “dangle yellow chain-like clusters of flowers over the heads of visitors with contrasting purple alliums planted beneath.” The gardens are open 9am to 9pm. Mount Pleasant’s the place to be Over the next few weeks, you can get a sense of why Mount Pleasant is becoming one of the city’s favourite neighbourhoods for everyone from hipsters to young parents to senior citizens. On June 1 there’s a family carnival at the Mount Pleasant Elementary School from 11am to 3pm. Activities include pony rides, a bouncy castle, bike station and obstacle course. You can also learn about the St. George Rainway Project. On June 8 from 3 to 6pm, join the Broadway East Art Walk. Drop by Anna’s Cake House (606 E. Broadway), Harkness & Co. Butchers (666 E. There already was the potential for clowns being a bit sinister before Michael Kennard and John Turner became Mump & Smoot. Their gibberish-talking creations have a reputation for making people laugh about some of life’s more macabre moments. In Something, their three-part show at The Cultch, they revive the skits that started them off back in 1989. The show’s not for the squeamish. Or for children. Referring to themselves as “clowns of horror”, in this show they try to revive a dead friend at a wake, enter the pandemonium of a doctor’s office and get snubbed by a snotty waiter at a fine café. Their distinctive style of clowning finds its roots deep within their work with Canadian clown master Richard Pochinko, with whom they worked extensively for the last two years of his life. Return of the woodbutcher By Sabrina Furminger

f Darth Vader had been a boozehound, you can bet 10,000 galactic credits he’d have stored his tequila and gin in Colin Johnson’s AT-AT cabinet. Constructed from wood and metal and formally titled The Emperor’s Cabinet (yes, we realize that Darth Vader wasn’t actually the Emperor), the horse-sized liquor cabinet required 600 hours to bring to life. According to Johnson (a selfdescribed woodbutcher based in Vancouver), it was 600 hours well spent. “Nobody can ignore this thing,” said Johnson. His favourite feature of the cabinet: its undeniable ability to render speechless anyone who gazes upon it. “They don’t have to say how much they like it,” he said. “They shake their heads with big smiles on their faces and they really can’t process what they’re seeing. It makes me happy.” Johnson’s whimsical art (both easy to carry and epically large) will be on display at the PNE Forum as part of this weekend’s Mini Maker Faire. The third edition of the annual event celebrates people from all walks of life who make stuff: engineers, scientists, artists, inventors, foodies, thinkers, designers, and dreamers. With its demonstrations, displays, and shopping opportunities galore, the

two-day festival provides a peek into Vancouver’s thriving DIY culture, something we might not otherwise get to see, according to Johnson. “I work by myself a lot of the time,” said Johnson. “Ultimately, [the Mini Maker Faire] is about getting noticed, and connecting with others.” Woodbutchery’s “an old English term,” Johnson says. “Everything I make is kind of whimsical so I figured I should have a whimsical name.” It wasn’t part of Johnson’s original career plan. Johnson trained as an animator and worked in an animation studio for a short time before admitting to himself that the lifestyle just wasn’t for him. “The actual sitting at a desk and doing animation for eight hours a day wasn’t my cup of tea,” he said. But his time at a desk wasn’t a complete loss: Johnson parlayed his knowledge of animation and his lifelong carpentry skills (forged as a child in his father’s welding shop) into designing and building animation desks for other animators. hough it’s a lovely place to call home, Vancouver isn’t exactly Sesame Street; you can’t just walk up to someone’s front door and ask for a guided tour (at least not without inviting a call to the police). But on June 2, you can unabashedly peek into 12 of Vancouver’s most beautiful homes as part of Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s 11th Annual Heritage Home Tour. The ticketed tour features an urban farm, a

coach house, a Heritage Fair, five Grandview homes (all within walking distance of each other), and more. Highlights include: • a West 11th terra cotta house (top two photos on left, above) constructed in 1910 and originally inhabited by a customs inspector. Considered a prime example of early 20th century middle class living, the home was purchased in 2009 and the subsequent renovation resulted in a new kitchen and dining area; and • an East 11th home built (photos, above, on right, plus dining room) in 1909 that’s

heralded as the perfect example of a house retaining its heritage character despite being updated for 21st century living. Pockets doors were discovered during renovation, and refinished. The original windows were replicated throughout the home. Not to be missed: a wall-less shower. inder Morgan Canada plans to stake out an almost all-new corridor for its second oil pipeline from Port Kells in Surrey to Burnaby to avoid demolishing homes or businesses in densely populated areas. Greg Toth, senior project director of the Trans Mountain pipeline twinning, said following the existing right-of-way — as the company intends on doing for most of the rest of the route through the Fraser Valley and the Interior — would be too disruptive to land owners. “We’re looking to municipal infrastructure, highways, railway lands and others that we can co-locate with,” Toth said in an interview Monday. Besides following local streets or utility corridors, the pipeline could be dug through municipal parks and regional greenways, the company confirmed. A 150-metre wide corridor is to be unveiled for study purposes as part of Kinder Morgan’s formal application by the end of this year. Detailed engineering would later narrow the construction zone to a smaller area within an 18-metre right-of-way. Further 30-metre “safety zones” created on either side of the right-of-way would give the company a perpetual sign off on any land alterations. According to the new filing, the existing tank farm in Burnaby would be doubled to 26 tanks and one more tank would be added at Sumas. Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart said the Burnaby tank farm expansion is a concern. “They’re all up on a hill,” Stewart said. “What if you had an earthquake? In the Japanese earthquake a lot of the things blowing up were refineries and storage tanks.” The project would include replacing the tanker dock at Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby with two new docks that have three berths. Dredging may be needed but officials say they have no plans to dredge the Second Narrows or to use bigger tankers than the ones already in use.

The wry face of Canadian horror movies What Johnny Depp is to Tim Burton, Katharine Isabelle is to the ‘twisted twins’ By Curtis Woloschuk

ike many actresses toiling in the Canadian film industry, Vancouver’s Katharine Isabelle has found stardom hard to come by. However, she does enjoy the enviable consolation prize of being an icon for a certain breed of moviegoers. “You don’t get rabid fans of depressing Canadian dramas. You get rabid fans of cult horror movies,” shrugs Isabelle, who first first endeared herself to horror devotees with the sardonic bite she lent her role as a teenage werewolf in 2000’s Ginger Snaps. More than a decade later, her brilliant deadpan performance as a rogue medical student in American Mary — written and directed by locals Jen and Sylvia Soska – once again has discerning genre enthusiasts taking notice. “Characters like Ginger and Mary come along so rarely that I’m thrilled to have been given both

of those roles,” she says. In turn, it’s impossible to imagine anyone other than Isabelle playing those parts. As the macabre events of American Mary plunge her aspiring surgeon down the proverbial rabbit hole and into an underworld of radical body modifications, Isabelle assures us that Mary Mason is keenly aware of just how curious her circumstances are. Through her sceptical facial expressions and wry line-reading, she accentuates the sly humour of the Soskas’ film without sacrificing its menace. “That happens to me real life. I can be in circumstances that are really traumatizing but I still have this sh*t-eating grin,” Isabelle admits. “When you’re watching a movie that’s so bizarre, I think you need one character who has their tongue in their cheek.” Working on movie sets since childhood has left her well-versed in the art of eye-rolling. Citing the example of shooting 13 Eerie, she laughs, “You’re standing in the middle of an abandoned zoo in Moose Jaw, you haven’t slept in three days, you’re covered in blood, and you can’t get the chipmunks to shut up for (recording) sound. You’re just standing there saying, ‘Really? This is happening right now?’” A similar sense of disbelief

A ranter’s rebuttal I read the two replies to my rant and gathered that I hadn’t been specific enough for the ranters to understand — I said early morning buses, that being buses in the early morning and not other times when I realize that drivers need a break from the unwashed and unruly. Most drivers pull up to the stops, most drivers will accommodate passengers in inclement weather, whether on a break or not. My point was that some drivers, and this one in particular, sit in the bus reading, doors locked for perhaps 10 minutes while passengers stand in the cold and rain. I was talking about courtesy and customer service. So yes, I dress weather appropriate, and could refrain from whining, or I could point out that I do not think that the first bus drivers need to get away from the screaming crowds for a break first thing in the morning. Empty Comox Street Have I just been unlucky or has anyone actually seen a cyclist on the new bike-friendly Comox Street? What a great use of our tax dollars by “Green Gregor”, eh? If he really wants to get more cyclists out of their cars and on to our streets, he should follow the example of the great cycling cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Montreal by dropping the unenforceable and, more importantly, unenforced compulsory helmet law. By stopping to portray cycling as a life-threatening pursuit and freeing potential cyclists from the fear of prosecution for not wearing helmets, way more people would get on their bikes. And the more cyclists there are, the safer cycling would become. n one hand, gardening is simple: you plant a seed, add water on a regular basis and let Mother Nature do the rest. A garden is born! But of course it’s not so easy. Mother Nature can have mood swings and there might be sibling rivalry between plants. Maybe you planted the seed in the wrong place; maybe your expectations are out of whack. Wim Vander Zalm is used to being asked a lot of questions by frustrated gardeners. Starting at 19, when he was in charge of one of the largest garden centres in BC (Fantasy Gardens), and later as the owner of several stores in Art Knapp’s chain, he’s been relying on his own experiences to help people either solve their problems or come to terms with the need to give up and start all over. He’s also realized that most gardeners are not alone in the challenges they face. For every person who asks him a question, there could be 100 people wondering the same thing. He’s taken those questions, and his answers, and put them in a new book called Just Ask Wim! Down-to-Earth Gardening Answers. In an easyto-read format, he shares more than 100 of the most-asked questions and provides practical advice on how to resolve them. He doesn’t necessarily give people the answer they want to hear — not ev-

Things to look for when fitting a bra 1) Bra straps are not meant to give lift, but rather assist the band in creating a comfortable support system by distributing weight. The location of the strap on the cup can cause the strap to wander and slip off, so this is particular to the person. There should be exactly one finger width of space beneath the strap.

ou might already know that a well-made bra will last you around two years before it’s time to make the investment in a new one. But even a good bra needs to fit correctly to do its job, and you might not know how to tell if yours is working. Naturally, the two experts pontificating on the subject (from in front of a glowing display of Empreinte bras at Diane’s Lingerie on Granville), are French. Lyne Glanzmann, who has 27 years experience as an international corsetiere, and marketing coordinator Severine Maisonasse, believe in The Bra. They had just finished leading a two-and-a-half hour Empreinte product education workshop for the (already very knowledgeable) bra fitters who work at Diane’s. And they had even more to say to the media crowd that showed up after, starting with the power of the iconic garment. “In North America, women want to wear more basic colours. And they want to hide their lingerie. I don’t know why; maybe because

in Canada it is a cold country,” Glanzmann jokes. “[It is] the opposite way of the French woman — we want to show everything. We want to show the strap, the jewelry, the cleavage. It’s really important to feel feminine.” “When you wear a bra that fits you perfectly,” adds Maisonasse, “you feel much more confident.” And while the Empreinte bras are definitely worth showing off, they aren’t created for all breasts equally. For example, their beautiful creations of Guipure lace are intended for bustier C-H cups. But if you don’t have a set of those, don’t be disappointed. Not only is there still time (kidding) but there’s always another bra. It is important, even for modest bustlines, to shop around for the right style for your body. When it comes time to buy a new bra, Glanzmann advises that Vancouver women: 1) Go to a specialty store to be guided in your fit. 2) Identify what your bra need is: every day, special occasion, etc. 3) Determine which bra shape suits you best: balconette, plunge, push up, etc.... And accept that some will not work for your breast type. 4) When you have to buy bras every few years, it is important to think practically vs. trendy, and

Vancouver’s beer (and rum-running) past After opening one of the city’s first breweries in 1888, Harry Reifel switched his attention to rum and opening places where Vancouverites could drink it By Will Woods

n celebration of Vancouver Craft Beer Week, let’s delve into the history of our city’s most entrepreneurial brewing family. Henry Reifel came to Vancouver in 1888, aged 19, with his brothers Jack and Conrad. They came from beer-making stock in Bavaria and had already spent two years working in breweries in Portland and San Francisco. Once here, Henry and Jack opened the San Francisco Brewery, perhaps inspired by their time there. The brewery was near Main and 11th, an area then called Brewery Creek. In fact you can trace the origin of Vancouver’s craft brewing industry right back to this sleepy stream in Mount Pleasant, today winding its way underneath busy streets. In Vancouver’s early years a number of breweries made use of the creek, a ready supply of fresh water. Unfortunately for the Reifels, their brewery struggled and they sold only months after opening but by the First World War, Henry Reifel had got the formula right for building successful breweries. Now married and with three adult children, he owned the Canadian Brewing & Malting Company amongst other businesses and was a major player in the BC brewing industry. The trouble for Henry was that being a German businessman in First World War Canada was a tough gig. To make matters worse, prohibition arrived in 1917, essentially closing

Courtesy Jason Vanderhill down the brewing industry. So like any entrepreneur worth his salt, Henry moved on to the next opportunity. Packing up his brewing equipment and enlisting son George, he set sail for Japan. Founding the successful Anglo-Japanese Brewing Company, he and George even developed a method for making malt from rice. Before long, however, Henry and

George were lured back to Vancouver. Prohibition was repealed in BC in 1921, but in the US it would run until 1933. So, for about 12 years, if you were an enterprising BC brewer, with enough cash to buy boats and recruit sailors (and perhaps pay the odd bribe), you could conduct your very own rum-running operation. Henry and George fitted the bill exactly and they set about the task with zeal. The Reifels added to their breweries by acquiring the B.C. Distillery in New Westminster. They bought a large tract of marsh land in Delta, with long grasses perfect to hide boats (incidentally, the land was gifted by the family to the federal Crown and is now the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary). Before long the Reifels’ rum-running business was working like clockwork down the coast. Their vessels would make their way south packed full of liquor and crewed by hardy ex-Navy men. Always staying at least 12 miles off the US coast and in international waters, hence out of reach of the US Coast Guard, the vessels would eventually reach “Rum-Row,” a veritable floating warehouse of bootleg liquor just off the coast of Mexico. Legend has it the Malahat, the largest of all the boats stationed at rum-row, was able to hold over 100,000 cases of liquor. American middlemen would then sail out from California, buy their liquor and head back home. Rum-running made the Reifels staggeringly rich. They built the Casa Mia mansion on SW Marine Drive. They owned sports cars, private airplanes and country estates. George even financed the building of the Commodore Ballroom and Vogue Theatre. When the US finally repealed prohibition in 1933 the Reifels knew the game was up and promptly sold their breweries and distilleries. So next time you are in the Commodore or the Vogue, spare a thought for old Henry and George, two of Vancouver’s greatest brewers and most daring entrepreneurs. overheard a mother tell her adolescent son, quite emphatically, that “There is no future being a chef.” I was tempted to interrupt and say, “So what are your thoughts on food blogging? Is there a future in that?” I refrained, since it was none of my business, but seeing his discouragement was heart breaking. In North America, being a chef is no longer a blue-collar “default job” but a desirable career. The majority of chefs tend to find their way by starting in the dish pit. It is one of the few jobs available to anyone of legal age and requires no formal training. Many treat it as a temporary job, but often find themselves exploring other positions in a restaurant. However, for some people, the role of a chef is not just a job they happen to fall into; it is one they seek. Being a chef is much more than putting food on a plate. It is a trade requiring dedication, an understanding of science, art and business, and, of course, passion. Thick skin and a tolerance for long hours help, too. It can be mentally and physically challenging, but any success comes with hard work and determination. From June 5 to 8 at BC Place, Skills Canada British Columbia (Skills BC) is promoting skilled trades as a first-choice career. I highly recommend the event to those curious about entering the culinary industry. There will be culinary competitions, Try-a-Skill demonstrations and networking with culinary experts. One of these experts is Quang Dang, the executive chef at the award-winning fine dining restaurant, West. Chef Dang originally came to Vancouver to continue his engineering degree and fulfill his dream to train for Canada’s national field hockey team. At 16 years old, he started at Joey’s Restaurant washing dishes and he later found himself cooking to help pay the bills. He eventually realized cooking was his true passion and changed his career path entirely. From washing dishes to creating and cooking the food that goes on them, he has come a long way and hasn’t looked back. He believes “cooking is [his] ticket to happiness” and encourages youth interested in the industry to pursue it.

If you want to trick your wine-savvy friends, blind taste them on this Kiwi wonder and I’ll almost guarantee they’ll be thinking Burgundy, if not Meursault. Clay and sandstone soils keep things fresh, while the close proximity to the Tasman Sea helps the wine retain plenty of lofty acidity. Wild yeasts and 100 per cent barrel fermentation give some great complexity, highlighted by notes of honeyed puffed wheat, nougat and green apple.

Okanagan winemaker Chris Carson’s Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs at Meyer Family Vineyards are amongst Canada’s best. I recently heard a rumour that he and his wife Jacqueline Kemp, who, as consulting winemaker for Tantalus amongst others, is certainly no slouch, collaborated on their own Pinot Noir from a tiny block in Naramata. The wine is amazing. Period. All the cool, geeky methods went into it; whole-cluster pressed, indigenous yeast, and aged in 25 per cent new French barrels for 11 months. Vintage story telling Rio Theatre hosts premiere of Master sommelier documentary By Gen Handley

hat reaction does Jason Wise hope to have from the Vancouver audience when he shows his documentary SOMM at the Rio Theatre on June 11? “Well I hope that after they leave the theatre, they immediately grab a bottle of wine,” the director says with a laugh, “and I hope that they fall in love with this story like I did.” The story that captivated the 33-year-old director will be making its international début as part of the Rio Theatre’s first ever Wine + Film night, which will include the a wine tasting as well as a Q and A featuring Wise (via Skype) and local oenophiles including Vancouver-based sommelier Robert Stelmachuk and WE Vancouver’s wine columnist Kurtis Kolt. “I’m all about anything that

Wise followed the lives of four men studying for the three-day exam while attempting to maintain normal lives and sanity. It’s staggering how much information on wine one needs to learn in order to pass the exam (less than 200 sommeliers have become Masters in the past 40 years). “These are guys you would expect to be sitting next to at a hockey game or bar — you’d never

know that they were studying some of the craziest grape varietals in the world,” Wise says. “I want people to see the incredible amount of energy in this industry that they didn’t know existed. When you see what these guys put themselves through, how much they put into it… you’re blown away.” He says the licensed, accessible character of the Rio Theatre is the perfect place to show his film. “It’s such an unpretentious venue,” he says. “The world of wine film has some stigmas. People automatically think it’s a bit inaccessible, that if you don’t know anything about wine it’s going to be above your head or it’s going to talk down to you. In this case, it cannot be further from the truth. “And plus, you can drink [at the Rio],” he adds, semi-seriously. “Any movie’s better when you can drink.”

n the age-old war between cats and dogs, cats are winning the battle of the internet. From grumpy cats to ninja cats, from cats who “has cheezburgers” to the current cat beard craze, felines have risen to become our go-to species for online hilarity. The stats back this up: according to the UK’s Guardian newspaper, looking at felines is the number one (legal) online activity in the world. Mark Brand’s newest venture: A Better Life Foundation

t’s hard to take the steps that are necessary to build a better life for yourself when all of your energy goes into finding something to eat. As a businessman in the Downtown East Side, Mark Brand (Boneta, Save-On Meats) has seen first hand just how hard residents have to struggle to feed themselves. He’s created many work opportunities at his businesses as one way to help; a few months ago he also introduced his breakfast token program that makes it easy for passersby to provide food to people on the streets. And now he’s come up with A Better Life Foundation. Through fundraising efforts and donations, he’s going to fund various communal kitchens in the DTES. A little can go a long way when the foundation pools everyone’s resources: $50 covers the food expenses for one community kitchen; $300 covers 100 meals; $4,500 can provide 50 meals a day for a month. “Being hungry sucks,” said the video that was screened at the gala launch party at the Vancouver Art Gallery on Saturday night. How can we make the world a better place? With cheese, pesto and pasta, cooked up with a little chicken and a lot of innovative ways to confront one of the city’s most pressing problems. Starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis Directed by Todd Phillips In a bizarre and inexplicable twist, director Todd Phillips ditches the successful formula laid down in his first two installments for a considerably darker and more mean-spirited outing in The Hangover Part III. No, there’s no actual hangover, no piecing together the hazy events of the previous night and no photo montage reveal (though an extra scene after the credits is arguably better than the entire film). Instead, we are left with a curiously violent heist movie devoid of any truly memorable moments. Off his meds, Allan (Galifianakis) accidentally decapitates a giraffe on a freeway overpass forcing his friends and family to stage an intervention. Soon enough, the gang is escorting him

to a picturesque rehab facility only to be run off the road and threatened by ruthless gangster Marshall (John Goodman) who demands the group find criminal Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong) and bring back some stolen gold. Marshall, of course, kidnaps the hapless Doug (Justin Bartha) as collateral. Once the plot is set in motion, it’s clear no one wants to be there. Thor Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms Diakow seem downright bored while Jeong and Galifianakis are painfully overused. The real insult of The Hangover Part III is Phillips’ gross miscalculation of what fans want from the third outing; the idea of losing the rote formula in favour of a more action-based dark comedy alienates the movie from the previous two, giving it little connection to the madcap insanity that shocked everyone before. Now the Wolfpack just seems bored.

Starring Lee Jung-jin, Cho Min-soo Directed by Kim Ki-duk When it comes to the big screen, it seems that revenge is a dish best served South Korean. Between Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, Bong Joon-ho’s Mother, and Kim Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil, twisted tales of bloody reprisals have become a major cultural export for the Asian nation. And while Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta never matches the technical and narrative bravura of Park’s Oldboy, it compensates with a depraved edge that allows it to hold its own. At the diseased heart of Kim’s film is Kang-do (Lee Jung-jin), a decidedly contemptible anti-hero. A loan collector in Seoul’s more squalid corridors, he shows no aversion to maiming those who can’t pay their debts. His callousness is only rivalled by the creative flair he lends his torture tactics. One fateful day, he finds middle-aged Mi-seon (Cho

Min-soo) following him like a shadow. When he confronts her, she claims to be his long-lost mother. After she expresses a desire to be part of his life, Kang-do devises sickening tests through which she might prove her devotion. Those viewers who can stomach this gruelling gauntlet are rewarded as Pieta’s plot becomes reliant on more than just appendages running afoul of heavy machinery. That said, Kim’s storytelling mechanics are hardly subtle. Rather than drawing you in, this sordid storyline demands that you keep your distance and admire its filmmaker as he makes like a particularly sadistic child with his playthings. Ultimately, it’s an ideal vantage point to take in a chilling climax that leaves you envying the characters who managed to escape these merciless proceedings with only flesh wounds to show for it. — Curtis Woloschuk

Wrinkles: The inescapble reality of aging WRINKLES

he notices his new friend pilfering cash from more incapacitated residents. It seems that it’s not necessarily a guardian angel who’s taken him under his wing. Miguel serves to illustrate how —when confronted with sterile, uniform hallways and mind-numbing routines —it becomes essential to establish your own sense of purpose. You come to appreciate his defiance all the more when you realize that he and Emilio spend every meal staring down their immediate future in the form of residents with more advanced afflictions. Ultimately, it’s the moments which subtly acknowledge such inevitabilities (rather than gracelessly articulating them) that are Wrinkles’ most powerful. They’re certainly more effective than some low-brow comic interludes in which octogenarians ogle an aerobics instructor or embark on an ill-fated joyride. Fortunately, such missteps are few, with the majority of Ferreras’ film proving to be steeped in sincerity and dignity.
