PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS USUALLY FOLLOW A CERTAIN ORDER WHEN PAINTING A ROOM.
They paint the trim first, then the ceiling, then the walls. That’s because it’s easier (and faster) to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls. And you certainly don’t want to tape them both off! When painting the trim concentrate on getting a smooth finish on the wood. Once the trim is completely painted and dry (at least 24 hours), tape it off (using an “easy release” painter’s tape), then paint the ceiling, then the walls.

Amazing creativity on display boards portraying history of various groups by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
When planning began for Sylvan Lake’s Centennial, committee members talked about how to get organizations involved. That’s when they came up with the idea to have each group create history display boards. “This is one way of getting lots involved,” said committee chairperson Brenda Dale. “These boards have created more energy in the community, they’re labours of love.” “They really understood what we wanted, that’s what I’m so impressed with,” added Laurie Chilibeck, who with Judy Scanland is in charge of the project. So far over 60 groups have created the history boards which are circulating through the community at 12 different locations. Boards are moved every week. They’re located in all the banks, the Legion, library, archives, seniors centre and seniors lodge. Our goal was 60 boards, said Chilibeck, who’s impressed with the response. They purchased 100 display boards. Scanland said that was the number of people first contacted about the project. They’re still accepting more boards and anticipate an increase as Centennial celebration events begin. The personality of the creator is evident on every board, said Scanland. There’s terrific response from the people who made the boards and people who get to read them. Dale added, at the lodge, people are waiting for the new boards to come in each week. “There’s such an anticipation of what the next board is going to be,” added Chilibeck. “The community has been fabulous in appreciating them” said Scanland. “I’ve seen little kids go up and touch the boards. We have been really, really pleased. Everybody gets to benefit from them — they bring back memories.” Chilibeck agreed, “the response from the people who made the boards and the people who get to read them is fabulous.” Four volunteers, Jennifer McLean, Sheena Dixon, Sherry Meloche and Scanland, look after rotating the boards each week. They’ll be all together at several Centennial events. The first is June 8 at the Centennial Jubilee Ceremony. The boards will be available for viewing in the old arena after the ceremony at the multiplex. “This is really a time for the groups to shine,” said Chilibeck. They’d like the organizations who contributed boards to have members at the arena to promote themselves and what they do to help Sylvan Lake. “We’re welcoming groups to come to the events. If you have old jackets, uniforms, sports
A display board about Varsity Hall includes pictures of Tommy Banks (autographed with a message to the town on its 100th anniversary) and P.J. Perry along with history of the dance hall and the Paul Perry Orchestra. It’s one of about 60 rotating through various locations in the community this year. STEVE DILLS
team shirts, pins or hats, wear them. If you want to pass out something, that’s great. Bring your photo albums,” she said. Then June 14 the boards will be displayed during the chamber of commerce ‘Meet and Greet’ event and will remain on display June 15 during the Dance of the Century in the multiplex.
After that the boards will be moved back to the community locations. Later in the fall, the boards will be returned to the groups who created them or given to Sylvan Lake & District Archives for cataloguing and safekeeping. Chilibeck is now working on a feature about Century Families. “We want to fea-
ture families who were here in the first 25 years and still have relatives here,” she said. Contact her at 403-887-2403 (dlchilibeck@shaw.ca) to learn more. The June 8 event is going to be quite interesting, added Dale. The Centennial Jubilee Ceremony will include 10 vignettes (stories) — one for each decade — about Sylvan Lake’s history. Graham Parsons is making his acting debut in the first decade and producer John Treleaven will act in the 10th decade. In between will be a number of other local ‘characters’, said Dale. As well the H. J. Cody band will perform. And included in the ticket price is a Bob Ronnie catered meal. But she said, tickets ($5 per person or $2 for seniors over 60 and children 3-12; toddlers under 3 and those 100 years and older are free) must be purchased so they can tell the caterer how many people are attending. The deadline for ticket purchase, at the town office or aquatic centre, is tomorrow (Friday). The event ends with the band Wooden Nickel performing. “Come and watch your community grow up over the decades,” encouraged Dale. “We’re turning the multiplex into a theatre to do it. And you can’t beat the price.” She promised “surprises for young and old. Plan to spend the whole afternoon and be prepared for some good laughter.” On another event, Dale said, tickets are going quickly for the Dance of the Century which will feature a different decade each hour from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on June 15. Various groups are sponsoring a decade and planning interesting ways to highlight their chosen years.

Special to Sylvan Lake News
”We work in Calgary, but we live in Sylvan Lake.” Like most people in Alberta, I have always looked forward to spring. My birthday is in May, summer is usually on its way, and I loved spending time at my favourite place in the world, Sylvan Lake. My family spent 5 years or so renting a cabin behind the Antler Lodge on Main Street, and in 1957 they bought a lot on 50th and started to build a cabin close to what was then the ice house. We had a small trailer on the site, carried water over from the neighbour’s well and used an outhouse in the back. I also think we bathed in the lake as I seem to recall my mother having a bar of soap in her beach bag. In 1961, my parents, Nick and Ethel Eroshinsky, bought Guy and Vi Stanfield’s lot where the Subway is now located. The lot was different then: a few large trees, a small hamburger stand, a little bungalow in behind with a bay window overlooking the street, a single garage and a small shed bordering the Revelstoke Lumber Yard at the back. With this purchase began the best 10 summers of my life! The lakeshore strip (all two blocks of it) was different then. Starting at the Varsity Hall (now Raccoon Lodge) and moving west, was the gas station (now Big Moo), the Sandcastle (now Chef Francisco’s Pub & Grill), the Red Onion (now Bravo Gastro Pub), the Centre (still standing!), Nix Drive Inn (now Subway), Smith’s Ice Cream stand (now Chief ’s Pub & Eatery) a small storefront (now Pete’s at the Beach) and another garage lined Lakeshore Drive. The lot on the west side of the street seemed to belong to the hotel, but the Tourist Information booth, parking lot and grassy park were also on that property and surrounded by a hedge. At the west end was Sylvan Lake Hotel, which also housed the bar and a restaurant. From peashooters pointed through the hedge at tourist’s feet to giggling at the wobbly teenagers, there were lots of ways to pass the time. The strip was an interesting place as only the hotel served beer. The legal age was 21 and the closest I came to getting in there was to sit on the steps with my friends and a bottle of pop while my folks had a quick beverage. Varsity Hall was a different story — so many interesting things took place in there! Dances that catered to the 16-25 age group featured many popular acts (remember Bobby Curtola, the Shades of Blond and the 49th Parallel?). They had a terrific house band that played Friday and
Saturday nights. On long weekends, there was usually a Sunday afternoon dance contest for the kids, a Sunday evening concert for families featuring all sorts of amateur talent and a Midnight Frolic from 12:05-2:00 am. The beach was different then. The sea wall was not there, just some flat turf under huge trees leading down to the large and sandy shore. There was lots of sand, a push merry-goround and a giant slide between the wooden federal piers. There were always great swings on the beach, and I recall the town putting up really big ones to everyone’s delight. The boathouse rented out surf boards and canoes. There was a gazebo at the base of the piers, which provided a space for entertainment and protection from the rain. Further along the shore were the trampolines (once Smugglers), some cabins (now Chateau Suites) and a further stretch of beach which became the marina. The town and the businesses also sponsored a regatta every year with swimming, boating, and water skiing competitions and main street had a carnival and small midway. We would come to Sylvan a week or two before the May long weekend to open the stand, clean it out, get the gas turned on, the freezers running and stock up on supplies. We would often open that weekend before just to make sure we were ready to go for the summer. Those weekends were sort of magical as well because each weekend we drove up from Calgary the trees and grass turned greener and greener. The May long weekend was always the kick off! Imagine the excitement of the year’s first dances, getting in touch with friends and just strolling up and down the street and the beach. Those weekends really rocked, but during the summer weekdays we lived quite pleasantly — jumping from the pier, swimming out to the rafts moored at the drop off, riding our bikes, roller skating at the curling club, eating fries, reading books from the library or sitting in the cool shade of the lovely trees. There were many interesting stores downtown: Cobb’s Grocery Store, Sylvan Lake Jewelers, Lane’s Clothing, Ritz’s Drugs, Old Dutch Bakery, the movie theater, a billiards hall, the grain elevators. Busy businesses for what was then a busy little downtown. And I will never forget wonderful neighbours on the strip and working at our hamburger stand. I very much grew up on those few blocks of fun. But as always, people and times change. A provincial government desperate for votes lowered the drinking age to 18 giving rise to many of Sylvan’s current bars and restaurants. Our lakefront, always a place to meet people, drifted from being a family place to being a party
Nix Drive Inn, circa 1964, with Nikki Eroshinsky in the ponytail, Nick Eroshinsky in window, and unidentified relatives. SUBMITTED
place. At the time, I was pretty happy about that, but looking back maybe not so much. Sylvan became a very cosmopolitan little place in a very short time. We had a small riot on Lakeshore Drive one night after the dance and bar had let out and my Mom and I watched the fire department hose down the miscreants from the comfort of our living room. It was all quite a scandal! By the time my parents closed and sold the stand, my life had moved on as well. I didn’t spend a lot of time here until the ‘80s when I starting to bring my boys up to my mother’s cabin. What lovely days they were — the seawall had been long built and there were steps and sand and swings and a shore right at the end of our street. After supper we would often take the kids for ice cream, starting and stopping at a playground with interesting equipment and tall swings, large restrooms
and two or three camp kitchens. The old growth forest was a great place for the kids to play and the huge trees provided all with shade and protection. A walk along the shale path and an unblocked view of the lake was always a sunset treat. There are many things that we did growing up that would now seem quite ill advised if not downright illegal. Riding bikes with no hands and no helmets, hiding beer in the bushes on the beach, dancing with strangers, selling fries from our stand window and rocking at block parties among them. I try to stay active in town events and I try to be positive about the future and the many incomprehensible changes in town as I still intend to be here for a long time to come. But on this 100th birthday of the Town of Sylvan Lake, it is a great treat to think about and perhaps long for those wonderful days past.

- Travelling for five days across Canada, a cat was rescued from the back of a moving van at Chateau Suites, May 15, according to animal control officer Jim deBoon. The van had travelled from Brampton, Ontario. deBoon reported the cat was weak but appeared in good condition after going without food or water in the back of the trailer. He’s contact authorities in the Brampton-Mississauga area to see if they have reports of a missing cat. deBoon reported Tuesday they haven’t heard anything more and the cat needs a home. Inspired youth inspire others Dear Editor, Another successful year of HEROES has come to a close. HEROES® is a simple but effective twelve-session character education experience that helps our Grade 7 and 8 students see what’s already inside them - GREATNESS!! HEROES doesn’t focus on changing behaviour or teaching certain skills because evidence has shown that positive behavior follows a positive self concept, therefore the HEROES program celebrates every student’s existing strengths — there individual unique gifts and abilities not their weaknesses or problems.
This strength-based focus, welcomes a safe and inviting conversation that empowers and releases our youth to make positive change in themselves and in others regardless of their circumstance or environment. The program couldn’t have happened without the following help: Sylvan Lake Rotary Club and Sylvan Lake Endowment fund which gave $2,700, Tim Hortons which gave 20 cases of water for the purpose of classroom illustration and reward, and Sylvan Lake Community Partners, Gospel Chapel, the staff of École Fox Run School and École Mother Teresa School who gave endless support and
encouragement throughout the year. If you would like to learn more about the HEROES program please go to www.impactsociety.com or contact Julian Price at julianprice75@gmail.com. HEROES facilitators, Julian & Kyla Price

In many many church’s every Sunday you never hear people testify of Jesus’s saving grace and people coming to Christ. Why does this happen? People are not witnessing. Church’s too often have become holy huddles. Gather together to get more teaching (information), or hear and then buy the latest Christian Book to get more head knowledge. Jesus sent us to do the WILL of the Father and Ànish WELL. As believers our mandate is to depopulate hell and populate heaven. This can only happen by sharing the love of Christ. Lacombe County wants to discuss options for RR21 launch by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Options for access to Sylvan Lake at Range Road 21 will be the topic of a meeting between Lacombe County officials and representatives from several area municipalities. Following a closed door session at their meeting May 9, Lacombe County councillors authorized Reeve Ken Wigmore and County Commissioner Terry Hager to meet with representatives from Half Moon Bay, the Town of Sylvan Lake and Red Deer County to
discuss the access point. They’ll now try to arrange the meeting. At their meeting two days earlier, Red Deer County councillors decided to see if the province’s transportation minister will support the county in closing the unofficial boat launch beside Half Moon Bay. Residents in the summer village called on the county to proceed with erecting a barricade during a public hearing in March. Ted Hiscock, Mayor of the Summer Village of Half Moon Bay, described appalling conditions found at the site after it’s been used by
boaters. “The bylaw is not related to the closure of Range Road 21 and access to the lake,” he said. “It’s restricting the access for large vessels, party boats, and groups of people that generally go to the lake to have a good time and leave their garbage behind.” However Sylvan Lake Mayor Susan Samson and Wigmore were concerned the closure would affect other areas of the lake which already has limited points where boaters can access the water. Wigmore suggested a better option would be upgrading the site with parking and washrooms. “We would ask that you consider other actions to address the misuse and abuse issues rather than the outright closure of the road to vehicular traffic,” he said during
Youth employment centre now open by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
The summer youth employment office operated by Sylvan Lake Youth Services opened for the season last Tuesday on the main floor of the community centre. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday until Aug. 23. “We believe that youth are a valuable asset to the Sylvan Lake business community and we want to ensure that any employment opportunity is made available to them,” said youth services coordinator Krista Carlson.
The youth employment office will have a job board that youth can browse for available positions. As well they can access assistance in resumé writing, job searching and interviewing skills. Full-time, parttime and casual jobs will be available and can include anything from reception or customer service to lawn maintenance or janitorial duties. This is a free service for employers and youth with a mandate to connect youth with available opportunities, however it is up to employers to thoroughly screen candidates, said
Carlson. In order to assist youth in their path to success, office staff have organized job creation projects where youth who have little to no job experience can participate in events and activities that will give them the opportunity to gain skills and earn some income over the summer, she added.

Lacombe County has spent about $1 million on doing just that at Sunbreaker Cove where it holds a licence of occupation from the provincial government to operate a boat launch. “Administration believes that the minister’s response to the bylaw is an important piece of information that council should have prior to further review and decision on the bylaw,” said Legislative Services Manger Nancy Lougheed in her report to council. A response is expected to take several weeks. The bylaw originally received first reading in January and was subject of a public hearing in March.

Trying to determine longest serving businesses Lake’s third longest serving business on his signage. Checking our sources quickly, we found the Imperial Bank (forerunner to CIBC) opened a branch here on December 16, 1918 and built its first office here in 1919. Cobb’s officially started in 1928 when Mr. Cobb of Delia bought the business of the Co-operative Store. We found reference to a new building built for the Co-operative Store in August 1919. The Sylvan Lake area got drenched with rain late last week and as a result fire bans have been lifted. Lacombe County cancelled its fire ban at 8 a.m. last Friday however County Commissioner Terry Hager urged people to exercise caution when burning. Fire permits are required for all open fires other than outdoor camp fires which are used for cooking or warming purposes and burning barrels. Sylvan Lake Fire Chief Cliff Brausen lifted the fire ban in town shortly after that on Friday morning. Red Deer County reacted about noon last Friday to lift its fire ban. Fire permits are still required for all open fires within the county, stated David Laurin, District Fire Chief. Campfires are allowed without a permit but must be contained within an acceptable fire pit. Burning is also allowed again in the summer villages around the lake and at Jarvis Bay Campground.

Carpentry skills competition wasn’t stressful at all for Magas by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
A Sylvan Lake student placed in the top three at a provincial carpentry skills competition in Edmonton recently. Chad Magas, 18, a Grade 12 École H. J. Cody High School student, took first place at regionals in Red Deer to earn a spot at the provincial competition. Then he placed third at provincials held May 15 and 16. At regionals, he said, they had to build a miniature garden shed. Materials were supplied, but then the stu-
dents have to measure and cut in a timed competition. “There’s very little room for error,” said Magas. “It’s usually very tight on time, about half the kids don’t finish.” This was his second time in regional competition. Then at Edmonton they built a potter’s bench. The competition, he explained, tests a variety of skills — precision, accuracy and time management. “You have to interpret plans. They give you very limited dimensions.” Magas said he didn’t find the competition stressful at all. “I quite enjoy it.” He’s worked with his father, Cory Magas, in carpentry “just about as long as I can remember.” His father’s construction company, Cory Magas Construction,
Purse joined Sylvan detachment early this month by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
RCMP Cpl. Mike Purse started work at the Sylvan Lake detachment during the first week of May. A 13 year member of the force, he’s previously served in Grande Prairie, Wetaskiwin and Hobbema. While in the last two locations he was with the general investigation unit dealing with serious crimes for most of the past six years. Originally from the Kootenay area of British Columbia, Purse received a college diploma in forestry engineering and worked in the forestry industry before pursuing and policing career. “My father was a Mountie so we moved a lot,” said Purse. He said his father’s career “probably planted the seed for me to apply”. He lives in Red Deer with his wife who’s a police officer posted there. In his spare time he enjoys boating, water skiing and golf.
Purse replaces Cpl. Malcolm Callihoo who transferred to Lethbridge.

focuses more on renovations. “It was all good,” he said of the event. “It’s fun just to get out, to be building, competing against other people. Everyone is friendly and nice. It was a great experience.” “When the guy next to me needed a
string line, I gave it to him, he would lend me a saw if I needed it. We were giving advice to each other.” Magas plans to go to Red Deer College for engineering after he finishes high school this year.

530 players on 50 teams playing soccer in Sylvan Lake by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
The outdoor soccer season is underway, and registrations for Sylvan Lake Blizzard Soccer Club are up once again. About 530 players are registered with the club, and make up about 50 teams playing both competitively and in the club’s house league. “Our numbers are actually stronger than last year again, and they
continue to go up year after year,” said club president Dave Brand. Of the club’s teams, seven play competitively in Central Alberta Soccer Association (CASA) leagues, and travel to various towns in Central Alberta for games. For the first time in several years, the club has been able to field a boys team in the under-18 division. An under-10 team is also playing competitively. “That’s really good exposure for

them, because they’re the ones that are going to be playing as they become teenagers.” Brand said numbers generally taper as players get older, as they take jobs and other commitments. Having an under-18 team in town, he feels, is indicative of the sport’s growing popularity. “As they get older, they decide whether they like it or not, and they get more serious about it,” he said. “Once they get to that 10 or 12 age, they start deciding whether or not they want to play on a travel team.” Player development programs are offered by the club, run by technical coaches from CASA and Alberta Soccer Association. The club’s outdoor soccer season began the first week of May, and will run until the end of June. Competitive teams may play a longer season, if they make it to provincials. Registration closed earlier this month, and had been open since March. Brand said early registration is encouraged each season, although he feels many people are reluctant to think about outdoor sports while there’s still snow on the ground. The club seeks sponsors every season, and often receives strong support from businesses in
the community. “Sponsorship is a huge thing for us. We’ve got several businesses throughout town that consistently year after year come back,” said Brand. “(Sponsorship) helps offset some of the costs, and it helps us to try and keep our fees as low as possible.” In return for supporting the club, sponsors may have a team named after them, and have their logos displayed on jerseys. Sylvan Lake Blizzard Soccer Club is run entirely by volunteers, whom Brand described as being “the lifeblood” of the organization. “They’re just excellent. From our photos to our year-end tournament to our setting up schedules to making sure that the kids get their jerseys — all that stuff is done by volunteers. “It’s a lot of commitment, but it really pays off.” Brand said the number of volunteer has grown steadily in the past several years. Team schedules for both house league and travel teams are available online at www.sylvanlakesoccer.ca. Contacts for volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are also available on the club’s website.
Over $1,000 raised through Blakely family golf tourney by Regan Lynn Special to Sylvan Lake News
Members of the C. P. Blakely School community (students, parents, relatives, friends, and some staff members) participated in a family fundraiser at Top o’ The Hill golf course Saturday. Benefiting from the participation of 78 golfers, were the school’s physical education department and an orphanage in Uganda (via T.O.U.C.H. Ministries), which the school has supported for the last few years. Despite the soggy, rainy, and
chilly conditions, many golfers did not let the weather dampen their enthusiasm as they enjoyed the outing with their families and friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Some novice golfers were on a course for the first time and their enthusiasm was wonderful. Unlike past years, there was no hole in one this year. Scorekeeping was optional, but each person had a chance to win various prizes while they were on the course. Many door prizes were given away as well, thanks to the unbelievable generosity of local businesses. Also, all food (burgers, buns, hot
chocolate) was wonderfully prepared by Leslie Bystrom and Janet Reddekopp. The entire cost of the registration fee, less a wonderful rate on the green fees from Top O’ The Hill, went to the fundraiser. Amazingly, over $1,000 was raised. All students at C. P. Blakely will benefit from this fundraiser. A successful event like this is only possible if members of the local business community are extremely generous and supportive. Thanks to all who participated, contributed, and supported C. P. Blakely School in this event!

What’s Happening
FLAHR Randy Lorne 1958 - 2013 Randy Lorne Flahr “Rigdog” passed away suddenly as a result of a heart attack on May 22, 2013 in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Randy was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan but lived overseas for the majority of his childhood due to his father’s career with BJ Services. At age 22 Randy finally settled in Sylvan Lake. He went on to follow in his father’s footsteps with a career in the Oilfield. His work took him all over the world and most recently to Albania. Randy, his loving wife Michelle and youngest daughter Ashley spent 2007-2011 living in Mexico with his job. He fell in love with the Mexican people and culture and dreamed of building a home there and moving back one day. Randy was a sun worshiper and loved all sports, especially hockey and golf. If he wasn’t at work or at home, you would definitely find him at Meadowlands Golf Course. Not a day will go by that he will not be thought of and missed. He is survived by his loving wife Michelle of 24 years, six children: Melanie, Kristina, Jessy le Vann (Brian le Vann), Randy, Sandra, Ashley; his mother Beverly Wolfe; sisters: Sherry, Shelly (Kevin Hinds); Brother Rick (Glenda), eight grandchildren, numerous cousins and extended family. He is predeceased by his father Ben Flahr. A Funeral Service was held at the Chapel of the Sylvan Lake Funeral Home, on Wednesday May 29th, at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at the Sylvan Lake Cemetery. Luncheon to follow at the Sylvan Lake Legion. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the trust account that has been set up at the CIBC to aid Michelle in the upcoming months.

Participation up significantly for triathlon, duathlon and kid’s splash ‘n’ dash by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
“Everybody had a blast,” said race director Cathy Forner of the “fabulous” Best Body Fitness Sprint which took place Sunday. This year’s race featured 150 adult participants in sprint triathlon and duathlon events and 60 youngsters in the Kid’s Splash ‘n’ Dash, an increase of about 15 per cent over the previous year. “We saw the trend when registration opened, we were up significantly,” said Forner. Last year they also held the Alberta Summer Games Zone 4 qualifier in conjunction with this race. This was the first year the kid’s event was completely filled (that happened about 2-3 weeks before race day) and she had a waiting list of four or five hopeful competitors. The races are becoming quite popular, she said, with quite a few competitors from both the Edmonton and Calgary areas. “We’re drawing quite a crowd from all over.” The triathlon includes a 750 metre swim in the pool, 25.4 km bike ride and 5.2 km run. The duathlon includes a 5.2 km run followed by a 25.4 km bike and 5.2 km run. The Kid’s Splash ‘n’ Dash includes a 25 metre swim in the pool, 600 metre bike ride and 300 metre run. Of course an event this size doesn’t happen without a large contingent of volunteers. Forner estimated 80-90 people helped during the race. “We had really strong leadership from the Sylvan Lake Triathlon Club,” she said, noting most members chose to volunteer rather than participate in the race. The event is also a fundraiser for the
club, with half the proceeds invested back into the next race and the remainder going to support the club. Forner explained they run an ‘A’ type race which is appreciated by many of the competitors. It’s consider an introduction to tri racing by many athletes who participated for the first time. “Our volunteers used sidewalk chalk to put messages of encouragement on the route. “Feedback I’m hearing was that it was a “fabulous first race for many, it was really well organized.” Great support from the community also helped the club host a top notch event. “Our sponsors are spectacular,” said Forner. “We get so much support, we couldn’t do it without them. Each year the club has featured a theme. This year it was Sylvan Lake’s 100th birthday. All of the stuff given to competitors, the ribbons, swim caps, t-shirts, contained the Centennial logo. As well there were two birthday cakes with the logo emblazoned on them. They were cut and served by Mayor Susan Samson (who competed in the race) and Ashton Hillaby. “It was just a fabulous race day,” Forner concluded. The top male triathlete from Sylvan Lake was John Christie who placed seventh overall. Travis Clark of Norglenwold was 17th overall; and Bart Dyrland of Sylvan Lake placed 40th. The top female triathlete from the area was Megan-Joy Rockey at 16th overall; followed by Janis Smith at 19th; Sandi Ducharme at 27th; Megan Souchuk, 31st; Lacey Robley at 43rd; Lori Donovan at 44th; Kimberly Romyn at 46th; Susan Samson at 47th and Lorna Gibson at 48th.

There was plenty of mouthwatering interest as youngsters waited for a piece of birthday cake marking Sylvan Lake’s 100th birthday at the conclusion of the BBF Sprint Sunday afternoon. Mayor Susan Samson, a competitor in the race, and volunteer Ashton Hillaby cut the cake.
