With this quilt I purchased fabric that had a ‘repeat’, then proceeded to cut the material into layers, then triangles and they finally formed unique kaleidoscope blocks. The blocks were then arranged into a pleasing design. “I was so thrilled to receive the rosette after thirty years of trying.” Other winners that weekend included the late Patt Robicheau, who won first prize, a quilt and basket, in the raffle. Second prize, a lap quilt, went to Lori Wilson, and Barb Bunt won third prize, a table runner.

he Creston Museum invites you to a special event just for local residents: Locals’ Day. On May 31 and June 1, the museum is offering special admission rates for local residents — just a toonie for anyone who lives in the Creston Valley. The staff hopes you’ll come down and join them, as you take your first tour of the museum this summer (or maybe your first tour ever!). There will be refreshments too, of course. Why is the museum doing this? Because the staff want to give you a special opportunity to check out everything that’s new down here at the museum — New exhibits, new gift shop, new books on local history and more! And, if you’d like a more in-depth look at what they do, and how and why they do it, at noon or 3 p.m. each day, manager Tammy Hardwick is offering special curator’s tours. “I’ll be leading these ones myself,” she says, “and, in addition to lots of local history, I’ll give you an insider’s look at the work and planning that goes into our exhibits.” Space is limited on the curator’s tours, though, so if you’re interested, sign up soon! Just call 250428-9262 or email mail@creston.museum.bc.ca. So head on down — Locals’ Day runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days.

Wynndel From page 1 In late 2009, residents caught wind of a potential sale of the property to an addiction treatment provider and rallied to halt the sale. About 200 packed a town hall meeting in January 2010 to express their concerns. The sale did not proceed. After learning in December 2012 that the school district intends to dispose of the property, Bartsch traveled to Nelson on behalf of the Wynndel Community Centre and offered the board of trustees a nominal $10 to purchase the property. “Our proposal would have put stewardship of the property into the community’s hands and relieved the school district of liability,” she said. “The proposal was rejected.” Now, she said, “the entire community is now faced with a final battle. … With the public consultation now duly complete, nothing stands in the way of our own little park becoming history.” The price it would take to acquire the property is unknown, but residents have been told they could accept less than fair market value if there is a good foundation for “alternate community purpose”, which the board believes is met by the park and green space use. SD8 will benefit marginally from a property sale. It would retain only 25 per cent of the sale price, with the remainder going to the province. The Wynndel Community Centre is setting up a fund to be held in a separate account. Donations will be held in the account, in confidence, and will be returned if the group is unsuccessful in making the purchase. If the purchase is made, charitable donation tax receipts will be issued. To make a donation, or for further information, call treasurer Bruce Johnston at 250-866-5258.

March Against Monsanto draws 200 to downtown Creston BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Nearly 200 people marched along Canyon Street on Saturday, part of a worldwide protest against global giant Monsanto, a producer of genetically modified crop seeds and agriculture chemicals. In the March Against Monsanto were people who drove from Cranbrook and Nelson to participate in what local organizers believe was the smallest community to participate in the day of protests. Families with young children walked along side senior citizens. “I was very inspired by the number of people in our community who showed up to raise awareness about changes in food safety and our food system,” organizer Karolyn Whitford said. Earlier in the spring, she, along with Abbey Lane Farms, ran an educational
booth at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market to make people aware of the march and Monsanto’s genetically modified organisms. “I found the majority had still never heard the term GMO (genetically modified organism) or Monsanto, which fueled us even further in this cause, especially in our farming community,” she said on Monday “The energy at the march was very strong, and the majority of marchers seemed to agree that the more people became educated about genetically modified foods the sooner Canada will join the large number of countries that have labelled or banned the untested and risky ‘substantially equivalent’ GMOs. “My hope is that all those who drove or walked past the protest returned home and began researching for themselves, and will share their findings with other people in their lives. Change is needed, and very soon.”

Johnsons Landing still at risk, says report BY SAM VAN SCHIE Nelson Star
A new report on the Johnsons Landing landslide recommends restrictions on further development in the community and that residents who choose to still live there understand the risk. The Regional District of Central Kootenay commissioned the risk assessment report, released to the public yesterday, to understand what caused the massive landslide in July 2012, how likely such an event is to occur again and what can be
done to reduce risk to residents. Geotechnical analysis of the landslide site revealed that record rainfall and the late snowmelt last spring had saturated soils on the slope above the community and triggered the landslide. An event of similar size has not occurred in the area since the glaciers receded some 12,000 years ago. The landslide killed four people and destroyed five homes. One other home was damaged. In assessing the ongoing risk to residents, the report considers the likelihood of death from future landslides. The probabil-
SD8 passes preliminary budget Nelson Star The Kootenay Lake School District is focusing on gaps in student achievement as it passed its preliminary budget this month. Areas needing attention include a gender gap, non-completion, transitions, critical thinking skills, poverty, social and emotional well being, and early identification of at risk literacy and numeracy, says a release issued by the district. The board of education passed the preliminary budget for their 2013-2014 school year at their May 7 meeting. Input coming from District Parent Advisory Committee, CUPE and Kootenay Lake Teachers Federation along with nine trustees as part of the finance committee contributed to the preliminary budget. “We would like to express our appreciation to each of these individuals for their participation in over 25 meetings, and many data gathering exercises, and debates,” said the release. Some highlights of the preliminary budget include increasing support for early learning and a greater degree of flexibility for how funds are used in schools. A total of $458,500 has been committed for teacher, noon-hour supervisor and education assistant time, and the purchase of assistive technology where required. These funds will also support the continuation of the Read by Three initiative in the district. And $565,855 (Community Links) continues to be focused on attending to the specific needs of vulnerable learners. Human resource issues will be addressed through an effort to maintain current levels of

For the people living at four properties in the moderate hazard zone, there is a 1:1,000 to 1:10,000 per year chance of dying in a landslide. In other words, they’re more likely to die in a landslide this year than in a car accident, which is considered a 1:11,000 risk per year according to Statistics Canada. In the high hazard area of Johnsons Landing, where there are nine homes, the risk is 1:100 to 1:1,000 per year, meaning occupants in those homes would
teacher staffing despite projected declines in enrolment of 144 students. “A reduction of five full-time equivalent (FTE) teaching staff throughout the district is included in the budget, rather than a reduction of six or more FTE that could have been contemplated,” says the district. “Over the next few months we will be adding back in staffing for targeted funds, such as Aboriginal education, English language learners, and staffing through the Learning Improvement Fund.” Clerical staff in schools and board office will be reduced throughout the district, as well. The school board says it recognizes the importance of responsibly maintaining their capital investments, and making further investments in areas where they are challenged. They’ve allocated $200,000 to the Technology Evergreen Fund for enhanced work and learning technology. The operations crew will see $78,818 to address aging and deteriorating facilities and support learning environments for students. The district’s vehicle fleet will get an $80,000 investment and aging shop equipment throughout the district will be addressed through $82,100 in funding. “The preliminary budget provides important direction for the district, and is an important aspect of ongoing conversations relative to the allocation of our resources to meet student need.” The final budget will be submitted to the Ministry of Education in February 2014.

general manager of corporate administration Dawn Attorp said people living in the highest hazard zones have been informed of that fact. “They understand the level of risk to their particular properties and to themselves,” she said. There are currently still 16 residents whose houses were either damaged beyond use, have no access to their house, or are still under evacuation order. “It’s going to take some time for the RDCK to fully review all recommendations and to develop any possible land-use restrictions based on results from the report,” she said. “We still have a considerable process ahead of us before we can lift the evacuation order for the landslide area and take the next steps in supporting the community in its recovery.” To read the full report, visit www. rdck.bc.ca/publicinfo/news.html.

Finally, there are five properties in the very high hazard area where the chance of dying in a landslide is 1:10 to 1:100. “The quantitative risk analysis indicates the risk to some individuals living on the Johnsons Landing bench is unacceptable (higher than typical published acceptability criteria),” the report says, noting typically anything higher than 1:10,000 is considered unacceptable. I’m a little disappointed. Last week I thought I would seize the moment and line my own pocket with a little of Nigel Wright’s largesse. My Facebook plea has fallen on deaf ears, ignored despite the fact that I am a journalist who isn’t exactly rolling in dough. Mine or anyone else’s. It’s been a pretty darn good few weeks for politics watchers. Even the early news that several senators were in hot water because they declared living expenses for staying in Ottawa even though they actually live there. But it got a lot better when we learned that two were former television journalists, both high profile appointees by the prime minister. Journalists aren’t exactly the most beloved folks among the general populace but they are downright loathed by Stephen Harper, whose disdain is proven by his lack of interaction with them. No media scrums, regular press conferences or easy interview access to these lowlifes. But Harper does like the staff in the Prime Minister’s Office. They are handpicked for their enthusiasm for his political bent and they form the largest group in Canadian history. So when the story broke that Harper’s right-hand man had written out a personal cheque for $90,000 to cover Senator Mike Duffy’s amount owed, I thought, oh-oh, this all looks too good to be true. Harper doesn’t like the Senate as it currently exists, being an old-time Reform Party member, which was a proponent of a Triple

political appointees without judgment, a prime minister who can’t even sound emotional when he is angry (his declaration had all the sincerity of his apology to First Nations people several years ago). This is good stuff, much better than lukewarm discussions about things like omnibus bills, cutting corporate taxes and even that old Harper favourite, “accountability and transparency”. Complex ready for busy weekend
We are closing in on one of the more busy weekends in the summer, the first one in June where we see the annual Rotary WineArt event, the second annual Just Tri It Triathlon, Relay for Life, the Deep Water Martial Arts Convention, and a couple large multi-day private rentals. We had some really nice comments on the facility from the election day, May 14, as a good number of people that normally don’t see the community complex actually did and were suitably impressed. It just seems like a short while ago we were in the midst of the triathlon and bang! here we are again. Last year provided some great experience as to what worked and what didn’t and we have tweaked a few areas to hopefully make things run smoother. The community showed great participation — both in actual registrations as well as volunteers required to make the event a success. For those of you new to the event or looking for a defined, short-term volunteer experience (no AGMs to avoid attending) there is still a bit of time to contact us to either test your mettle as an athlete or hone your skills as a traffic control person or a swimmer counter amongst other jobs. The triathlon combines three areas of expertise — first you swim 500 metres, which is 20 lengths in the pool or until you hit 20 minutes of flailing about, then you head outside to where
can also enter as a team, so one could just swim or bike and have someone else do a different leg of the event. If you are a volunteer attendant, water station operator, lap counter or the like, there may be opportunities to bring a friend and spend the Saturday morning helping at a community event. Speaking of community, perhaps you read the article in the May 16 Creston Valley Advance about the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Neil Ostafichuk Governments conference coming to Creston April 9-11, halfway point being the lookout point 2014, which brings in several hundred on the highway to Wynndel where local government officials and staff. you do a U-turn and head it back from This is pretty exciting for us at the whence you came. Disappointed with parade coverage To the Editor: Upon reading the May 23 issue, once again I was disappointed in the lack of coverage regarding the Creston Valley Blossom Festival parade, particularly the lack of photos depicting the marching bands, floats and especially the equestrians. As an entry participant, I’m guessing that you may not be aware of the time and effort that it takes in preparing for this. The floats take hours and hours to decorate. The bands take hours in rehearsing and the equestrians take hours in grooming, let alone loading and unloading, and then tacking them for this event. Photos of children in the paper of course are a great cause; after all, all children love a parade. By why not include the things that take up so much time and effort, as well? Some travel great distances to attend our smalltown local parade. Why not support them by showing our gratitude by putting a photo in our local paper? There were 10 photos of children in this issue and one small shot of a horse’s head. What about the Clydesdales from Fort Steele, the mules pulling a beautiful
carriage, the Fjords pulling a chuck wagon, the great floats, the marching bands, the antique cars and so on? After all, without these mentioned, we would only have half a parade. Donna Bonthoux Kitchener
Senators should be accountable To the Editor: Over the past week I have heard from constituents voicing disgust and displeasure with recent events that have occurred in Ottawa, specifically the issues revolving around senators Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin, Patrick Brazeau and Mac Harb. I can tell you unequivocally that I am equally upset over the entire set of events. I do not condone or tolerate any form of illegal activity, whether criminal or civil in nature. I am frustrated by a set of legislative rules that do not allow us to remove someone from public office for a breach of trust. Furthermore, if a criminal act has been committed and enough evidence is gathered then it should be brought before the courts for judgement.

The Senate is enshrined in the Constitution. That is why we have asked the Supreme Court of Canada whether the reforms we have proposed can be accomplished by Parliament alone. We have also asked the court to rule on options for abolishing the Senate completely. Most, if not all pundits, agree that the latter is not likely due to a constitutional challenge. Most amendments can be passed only if identical resolutions are adopted by the House of Commons, the Senate and a two-thirds majority of the provincial legislative assemblies representing at least 50 per cent of the national population. This formula, which is outlined in section 38 of the 1982 Constitution Act is sometimes referred to as the “general amendment procedure” and is known more colloquially as the “seven plus 50”. In simple terms, it is not likely to happen. There is no room for ignorance of law or procedure when you sit at the highest level of government. We have at our disposal countless legal authorities to give us advice and guidance. If you choose not to accept that advice or guidance then, in my opinion, you live with the consequences. Any person who holds a public office position, either elected or appointed, should not only withstand public scrutiny, but stand before the public to explain any shortcomings. If you can do neither, you should do the honourable thing and quit the position. David Wilks Kootenay-Columbia MP
CBC needs protection from Harper
Not surprisingly — and not unjustifiably — the “Mike Duffy et al affair” has been getting its share of media and public attention lately. There’s nothing like a juicy political scandal to grab the spotlight. Renewed calls for the Senate’s abolition were to be expected. Fortunately, the difficulty of amending our Constitution makes that virtually impossible. Meanwhile, we need to worry about another Ottawa issue with far greater long-term implications. Hidden in a piece of proposed government legislation until unearthed by the media is a clause that would give the Harper government power to tell Crown corporations how they should negotiate with their employees. It would even give the government the authority to have a Treasury Board official sit in on collective-bargaining negotiations at any of the 49 Crown corporations. Why are these proposals of concern? Because Crown corporations are created for two reasons. One is to handle matters of a business nature where it is more important to have market or technical expertise, rather than partisan political desire, making the decisions. The other, and most important, is to shield the management and day-to-day operation of a publicly funded venture from government interference. Corporations such as Canada Post and Via Rail would fall into the first category. CBC would obviously be in the second.
Q
CBC is already too vulnerable to governmental control. A majority of its board members are Harper appointees and six of them, including the chair, have donated generously to the
The Voice of
Experience Peter Hepher Conservatives’ election kitty. It must be a constant struggle for the CBC’s management and employees to resist the implicit pressure to avoid criticizing the government when journalistic impartiality requires it to do so. They deserve our admiration and gratitude. Now, however, the governmental camel is proposing to thrust its head directly into the CBC’s tent. Financial matters are central to the operation of any public — or private — organization. When, as in the case of the CBC, employee remuneration is a major budgetary element, that camel’s threat to managerial independence is enormous. The Harper government’s “excuse” for taking this step, as given by Treasury Board president Tony Clement, is that the CBC and other large Crown corporations are paying their employees too much. The move,
uote of the
says Clement, is “part of a broad issue, which is aligning the public-service compensation and benefits to privatesector norms and benefits.” Very possibly, private sector urging is behind this move because it is hard for them to keep their employees’ wages down if Crown corporations are paying more generously. Still, it’s a safe bet that Harper and Co. were easily persuaded. They have always shown a preference for big business over those who work for big business — an inclination disguised by the mantra: jobs, jobs, jobs. What’s more, it is no secret that Stephen Harper likes to have all the strings of the federal government in his grip as much as possible and that he has no love for the CBC. He is not the first prime minister to find the CBC annoying. It wouldn’t be doing its job if it were otherwise. But Harper’s predecessors have rightly understood that the public broadcaster is simply doing its job of helping to hold government to account and, while complaining verbally on occasion, have not reacted punitively — unless you count being stingy about the CBC's funding. Whatever the reason for now intruding directly into the management of the Crown corporations, it is in all Canadians’ interest to see that this ominous threat to the CBC’s editorial independence is thwarted. Planting trees Trees offer many benefits for your home and for your neighbourhood. Privacy, cleaner air, shade, and habitats for wildlife are all benefits that can be enjoyed by planting trees on your property. Trees can also add to the curb appeal of your house, and even help reduce energy costs. Planting evergreen trees on the north and east sides can protect your home against winds and help reduce heating costs. Planting deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves in the fall) on the south and west sides of a home can provide shade and help to lower air conditioning costs during the summer months. Be mindful of the meter When planning new gardens, or planting trees, be aware of your natural gas meter. Try to keep gardens and trees away from your meter to allow workers access if they need to read or work on your meter. —News Canada

Akokli Mountain towers above its north slope of rocky ribs.

Preparing for the big hike
A lot of things come to mind when I think of preparation: speeches, planting, work and so on. Then there is preparing for marriage, preparing to be a parent, preparing for the custody of one’s estate and would you also add to that preparing for the Lord’s second coming? Results or consequences of not preparing for some event, task or project could be trivial or they could be disastrous. Early last August, I aspired to hike into the backside of Akokli Mountain and spend a couple of nights out on the north slopes of that massive mound of Earth’s innards. Access to this sprawling heap of rock is not easy by any route. A westerly access can be taken over the south slope of Mount Davie, along a hogback ridge connecting with Akokli. The other is by a long drive the full length of the south side of the mountain to the east end. Another is a long hike from the north into the arms of the mountain. I chose to go by the east end. A friend took me up in a four-by-four truck and would have left me there except for his consenting to lead me to where I could find some “bluegreen gold”. Now, it’s advisable to not go alone in such wilderness even if it is so serenely beautiful one can’t resist! But, as no one was pounding my door down to join me, was I to miss out on such a memorable, experience of a lifetime? But, I had a good reason to go there! I was after blue-green gold and wanted to see gorgeous alpine gardens watered by perpetual snows from the north face of Akokli. There is ample information available on preparing for any level of walk, hike or outing. There is probably no perfect preparation because there are often things that come up unexpectedly. Hopefully they are minor. For any overnight jaunt in these mountains, there is specific and basic equipment. Often the beautiful and scenic destinations in a mountain landscape are not only lush with flowers, mountain streams and tarns, but also lush with mosquitoes, and so a tent, if not for shelter, is necessary for protection from mosquitoes and other insects. In some situations, like on a dry, breezy ridge, or during a clearing spell
after unsettled weather, they aren’t so bothersome. To reduce the weight of my pack, I took only a fly to drape over my sleeping spot. At dusk, the mosquitoes came out in masses, humming around and drilling through my mosquito hood everywhere it touched my face. I got little sleep. Early the next morning, before dawn, the air was calm and humid, and the mosquitoes were still swarming Ed McMackin about by the millions. I packed up as quickly as possible and left the scene, heading west to Mount Davie. Since then I have acquired a 3.5-pound single-pole tent, which, even though it is a two-person tent, is probably more roomy for one person. The jaunt out turned up another problem. Once I left base camp, there was only one creek, and from there on there was no water until I reached Highway 3A below Mount Davey. I became quite dehydrated and probably lost about five pounds. I had planned to take a gallon plastic jug to carry in hand but that got left behind. However, in spite of the self-inflicted hardships, overall I was awestruck by the scenery, rocks, tarns, alpine gardens and, of course, by the “blue-green gold”. There are a number of preparations to make for any kind of outing and basic things to take. Personal safety, comfort and enjoyment must be the basis in deciding what those things will be. These are also, primarily, a personal responsibility. You need to look after yourself as no one else may be able to. If needed, consult someone for tricks of the trade. Go prepared, enjoy and create a good memory. Yes, I know that any kind of outing may be hard work and that the pay is lousy, but the perks are great, making it well worth the effort. Remember, “There is gold in them thar hills.” If any of you are into hiking with someone or in a group or learning about some trails and routes, consult an information sheet, which is expected to be available soon at the Creston and District Public Library and at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

Martial arts Sparwood driver wins derby tournament runs on Saturday Advance Staff
About 2,400 spectators enjoyed the annual Creston Demolition Derby, held near Kitchener on May 19. Sixteen cars entered the derby, with Sparwood’s Rick Reid walking away the winner, ahead of Shaun Umscheid from Vulcan, Alta., and third-place Jeremy Rusnak of Sparwood.
Two trucks and a van entered the truck heat, which resulted in Martin Zars of Grand Forks placing first. Cranbrook’s Wanesa Anderson won the powder puff heat, and Creston’s Kyle Wiebe won the grudge match. CRESTON
June 1 marks the first annual Deep Water Martial Arts Tournament, held deep in the mountains of British Columbia, in the beautiful Creston Valley. Deep Water promises to be a tournament like no other, featuring many competitive events, seminars and demonstrations in a wide variety of martial styles, special events and panel discussions with some of the leading martial arts masters of our time. Deep Water is more than just a competition; it is an experience and an opportunity to learn and grow your martial arts in a beautiful natural setting. The tournament itself will feature fighting divisions, hard and soft style forms divisions, weapons fighting divisions and even multiple opponent weapons fighting, which has never before been seen in a martial arts tournament. You won't be able to miss the iron spirit divisions, in which you'll see grueling tests of martial willpower in the horse stance competition and the spear/staff targeting. There will be demonstrations and workshops giving attendees unprecedented personal access to masters of various styles including Qigong, Chinese sword, Tai Chi, kung fu and Escrima. These masters will be generously teaching inner concepts and techniques of their respective styles. Many students train years to have this sort of access! There will also be a panel discussion featuring many notable masters, discussing deeper themes and topics pertaining to the martial arts. A discussion like this, including accomplished masters of such a variety of styles, is extremely rare anywhere in the world. Vendors and exhibitors will be on site, providing entertainment, souvenirs and educational opportunities. This year, Deep Water is proud to present Dr. Chen Qi Ming, grand master of Shaolin 18 Lohan Palm, and Chinese doctor for over 50 years. Also we will feature lineage holders and masters in chinese sword, kung fu, and Qigong, as well as a professor of Chinese medicine, a martial anthropologist and more. BC Children’s Hospital helps kids get care closer to home Brooke Malakoff has made countless trips to BC Children’s Hospital since she was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. The 18-yearold Fernie resident has nothing but praise for the hospital and the doctors and nurses who have cared for her, but she’s always happy when she doesn’t have to travel any further than Cranbrook for care. “They have a little oncology unit in Cranbrook,” she says. “I go there once a month for about three days now. It’s much more spiritually uplifting to be at home, and it’s nice to be closer to my friends and family. Just being able to sleep in your own bed makes all the difference in the world.” Fortunately, caregivers at BC Children’s Hospital know it is easier on children and their families when they can receive care closer to home. With this in mind, the hospital supported the creation of Child Health BC, an initiative aimed at ensuring all BC children have access to a consistent standard of specialized care, ideally close to home. “It’s always good news to me when a young person is able to receive specialized care close to home,” says Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive director of Child Health BC. “That is exactly what we’re looking for.” In the near future, children and youth in the Kootenay will benefit from an even closer link. Equipment
purchased by Child Health BC is being installed at the Kootenay Child Development Centre that will allow it to operate as a “telehealth” centre – a direct connection to BC Children’s Hospital via an audiovisual link. Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respectively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Pediatric clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo and Prince George have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participated in Child Health BC’s workshops. O’Donnell credits Overwaitea Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s growing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a presence in so many BC communities. Overwaitea Food Group President Darrell Jones agrees. “We’re committed to the health and wellness of kids and families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been
proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and with the help of our communities, we’ve contributed millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects, advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played a key role in making this fundraising success possible.” Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC. Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children. Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support research, equipment purchases and training. On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs. “Every year people from across the province make donations in support of the hospital and it makes a huge difference,” says Gold. “Brooke Malakoff is proof of that.” Brooke’s family has a direct connection to Child Health BC’s biggest supporter. Brooke has worked at the Overwaitea in Fernie and her stepfather George Torresani manages the meat and deli department. The store’s annual fundraising programs in support of BC Children’s have taken on special meaning, but Brooke and her family have always been keen to help their community. “I volunteer as much as I can and anywhere I can,” she says. “Anything I can do to give back.”
In 2012, over 360 children from the Kootenays made over 900 visits to BC Children’s Hospital.
JUNE 1 & 2, 2013 On June 1 and 2, tune in to Miracle Weekend, broadcast live from BC Children’s Hospital, on Global BC from 7:00pm on Saturday, June 1 until 5:30pm on Sunday, June 2 The 26th annual BC Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Weekend is a two-day celebration that showcases the best of BC Children’s Hospital: patients, their families, caregivers and supporters who come from every corner of BC. BC Children’s Hospital receives over 200,000 visits from patients from across the province every year. Donations help the hospital deliver the best in care every day, and are helping to prepare for the future by supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and better access to care for children in or close to their home communities. Please support BC Children’s Hospital.

At the Overwaitea Food Group, we’re very proud of our longstanding commitment to investing in the health of kids and their families. We’re grateful to everyone who supports us in this effort. Our team members, customers and suppliers have all played a key role in our fundraising success over the years. We’ve been supporting BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades, and we’ve raised millions of dollars in support of capital improvement projects, important research initiatives and advocacy programs designed to help keep our kids safe by reducing preventable injuries. In 2007, we made a $20 million pledge to support Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital that helps get kids in BC get the care they need, closer to home. Since then, we’ve raised more than $10.7 million toward our goal, and Child Health BC has been able to put this concept into action in a number of communities throughout BC. We are grateful for the amazing commitment and fund raising efforts driven by OFG team members who encourage the generosity of our customers and suppliers.

Relay encourages all to keep fighting cancer BY LISA PRIMROSE
Cancer is more than just a word. It is one of those things that become part of the way of life for not only those fighting it, but their loved ones as well. There is always a reason to fight for a future without cancer, and we believe everyone should keep fighting one way or another. Your local Relay For Life event provides you with many opportunities to help in the fight. You can make a donation or volunteer to help out on relay day — many volunteers are needed for jobs both big and small! What about starting or joining a relay team? Is there some major reason you can’t? Think about how many donations you could get, isn’t that even better than just making one yourself? And the fun you will have with your team! Ask yourself: If you were a part of Relay for Life, why would you be relaying? Each and every person that is a part of the relay has a reason, and every reason is a little bit different yet just as touching as the last! I relay for myself, my family members and my friends who have lost their lives or fought this horrible disease. I also relay because I believe we can make more happy endings. Here is my story of when I found out I had cancer.
The luminary lap ends the relay, honouring those who have battled cancer.
Sept. 12, 2011, was just another Monday when I received a call from my doctor saying he wanted to see me as soon as I got off of work to give me the results from a recent routine scope. When I arrived, he told me to sit down as he had disturbing news to tell me. He said that I had cancer. He told me that everything would be OK and he would get treatment for me as soon as possible. I left the hospital and sat in my car and I cried. All I could think about is that I was going to die from cancer at a young age, just like my friend Brenda who passed away in 2009. I kept
Submitted
thinking about leaving my children without a mom the same way Brenda’s children had been left on her passing. I drove home and sat on our deck and just cried. I reached out to someone else who fought the same form of disease as me a few years before. She came over and talked me through the shock and told me who I needed to contact. At the top of my list was the Canadian Cancer Society in Cranbrook. They were awesome! They told me everything I had to do step by step. The Canadian Cancer Society helped me with all my treatments, medication,
traveling expenses, lodging and more. My doctor was great and got me into the BC Cancer Agency in Kelowna to start radiation and chemotherapy right away. My husband and I stayed in Kelowna for two months so that I could receive my treatment every weekday. I met a lot of different people there fighting the same disease or other types of cancers. We exchanged stories and became friends. The many postive letters, emails, songs, and notes of encouragement from all my family and friends helped support me through my battle. Now, I am luckily in remission since September 2012, but since my battle, I have lost two very dear friends to cancer. Survivors like me are proof that we are making progress in the fight against cancer. While research is only one part of what the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life funds, without this lifesaving research I would likely not be alive today to tell my story. I will never stop fighting this disease. Please, give or join if you can, as every little bit helps! I walk for those that I know and love, I also walk for you and yours. Lisa Primrose is the Relay for Life’s honorary chair.
Together we can solve it
Cancer society celebrating 75 years CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY It’s the Canadian Cancer Society’s 75th anniversary this year, and we want all of our proud Relay for Life participants to help us celebrate. The Creston and district relay is taking on an event theme — for the first time — to help us commemorate this incredible milestone. We will be taking a “Walk Through the Ages” to celebrate each of the decades of the Canadian Cancer Society’s history. Teams are invited to choose a decade from the society’s history — that’s the 1930’s straight through today. Teams dress up as per their decade, and decorate their sites accordingly. There will be karaoke contests where your team can wow the crowd with the hits of your decade. Have fun with this one! On a more serious note, let’s take a look at some of the milestones we have seen over the 75-year history of the society: 1930s • In 1935, the governor general of Canada invited Canadians to celebrate
the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V by donating to the King George V Silver Jubilee Cancer Fund. The campaign successfully raised almost $500,000 by the end of the year. In 1937, the National Study Committee recommended the formation of the Canadian Society for the Control of Cancer and this new organization was officially launched the following year. (We changed our name to the Canadian Cancer Society a few years later.) 1940s • On Jan. 27, 1947, a group of leading Canadian scientists and health authorities met with one goal in mind: to create a national organization that could support and stimulate important cancer research. On that historic day in Ottawa, the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC – now the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute) was officially founded as a joint initiative of the Department of National Health and Welfare and the Canadian Cancer Society.
1950s • New life-saving drug for Hodgkin’s disease • New approaches to radiation and breast cancer surgery • A model for cervical cancer screening 1960s • Advances in bone marrow transplantation • Blood tests for colorectal cancer 1970s • Identifying chemical carcinogens • Clinical Trials Group established 1980s • Bone marrow transplantation • Developing digital mammography 1990s • Canadian Nobel Prize winner for “site-directed mutagenesis” • Discovery of breast cancer gene • Increasing the cure rate for lung cancer 2000s • Reducing risk of breast cancer recurrence • A few puffs enough to addict teens to smoking

Denny s passions in life were: horses and rodeo, good ole country and western music, "the cowboy way of life", hunting and the outdoors, and his quarter horse driving team Spook and Spirit. Denny s spiritual gift from God was "Discernment". Denny was loved by all that knew him for his jokes, quick wit and story-telling ability. He retired in 2003 and one year later settled in Creston , BC with his wife Theresa, nestled at the base of the Skimmerhorn Mts. Maintaining his USA citizenship, Denny also became a permanent resident of Canada in April 2004. He loved to sing, dance and wished he had learned to play a musical instrument in his lifetime. He lived a full and blessed life and was surrounded by great friends and neighbors! Denny is predeceased by his parents James and Bernice; brother Ray, brother Glen, several beloved friends: Arvin Otter, Hugh Blosser, Bob Arrotta, Marlene Cooper, and Carl and Irma Smithers. Denny is survived by his wife Theresa Vandeberg of Creston, BC; step-daughter Kaylee Polzin (Chad) of Creston, BC; twin sister DeAnn Larson (Arlen) of Port Orchard, WA; sister Joy Nesseth (Murel) of Port Orchard, WA; previous wife Pat Mahler of Scobey, MT; sons Shawn Vandeberg (Carrie) of Eureka, MT, Brady Vandeberg (Melissa) of Lusk, Wyoming; four grandchildren: Mikayla, Nikoda, Zach and Savana, and several nieces and nephews. Denny did not wish any funeral services, however there will be a Celebration of Life Gathering at his home in the summer of 2013. Notices will be sent out. Denny was also known as "Slim" and will be greatly missed by his wife Theresa. Captured on electronic recording, some of Denny's Ànal words before passing away were: "Goodnight my all.......goodnight everybody I love, I thank you all so very, very much! I pray tonight for everybody......goodnight."

Armstrong back with Opera! Library doc looks at Trouble in the Peace (As it Wasn’t Intended) CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY
In the Peace River region, trouble is brewing. As gas companies move heavily into northern B.C., family farms suffer lethal gas leaks, stunned that such injustice could happen in Canada. From this mayhem emerges Karl Mattson: cowboy, artist, father. Small gas leaks are affecting the health of his herd and family. When a big leak comes, it will be deadly. But the media cares little for the plight of farmers like Karl. And while the government eagerly commits $4 million to catching a mysterious “pipeline bomber”, it fails to regulate safety standards for its own citizens. The message is clear: industry trumps individuals. But Karl isn’t ready to roll over and die just yet. Trouble in the Peace is the story of a growing grassroots revolution against the multinational energy extraction industry. The film offers an unflinching look into the dark viscous world of big oil and gas told through the personal perspective of two neighboring families at war over the land beneath their feet. When livestock begin dying and children become mysteriously ill after gas leaks, a series of bombs are set off on the pipelines in reaction. The gas company announces a $1 million reward for the capture of the pipeline bomber, which viciously tears the community apart. But after the dust settles, the surprising and inspiring

result is of people coming together with a common goal. Born in Hamilton, Ont., director Julian T. Pinder studied film and politics at Queen’s University. He then apprenticed under Nick de Pencier and Jennifer Baichwal (True Meaning of Pictures and Manufactured Landscapes) before assisting director Helen Shaver (Law and Order, The Unit, Medium), followed by producing television with Sarrazin Couture Entertainment in Toronto. Aside from being immersed in film from an early age, Pinder is a rough traveller with an interest in the seedier and more volatile parts of the world. He brings a knowledge of filmmaking, a proclivity for storytelling, and a keen sense of the “other side” to his films. Pinder teamed up with Six Island Productions, the National Film Board, TVO and Canwest-Hot Docs to direct his debut feature documentary, Land, which premiered to sold out audiences at Hot Docs. He and producer Paul Scherzer teamed up again on this doc, Trouble in the Peace. “Sometimes I do ask myself why I don’t just do drama,” says Pinder. ”The time I spend finding these characters, why don’t I just write this stuff? [But] the people I met on these shoots and the personal journey, not just physical — it’s almost like a therapy session making these films.” Trouble in the Peace runs at 1:30 p.m. June 8 at the Creston and District Public Library. Admission is free. Running time is 80 minutes.

Kevin Armstrong, a versatile and unorthodox performer with an international career, will be bringing his hit one-man show, Opera! (As it Wasn’t Intended) to the Snoring Sasquatch in Creston on June 7. Armstrong performs a wide range of music, from opera arias and musical numbers to gran-
diose, vocal-oriented music by Meat Loaf (in German), Queen, Styx, and others. Opera! (As it Wasn’t Intended) played to sold-out houses at the 2011 Edmonton Fringe Festival, as well as the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Armstrong grew up in Nelson. He started music lessons by age 10, and by college, had already studied classical, jazz and rock guitar, drums and voice. After completing a master’s degree in vocal performance at McGill University in Montreal, Armstrong moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where he did an apprenticeship at the Zurich Opera House. There he had the opportunity to perform onstage next to some of the biggest names in the opera world. Some of Armstrong’s recent credits include the world-premiere of the opera Khaos with Nelson Community Opera, the roles of Pilate and Judas in numerous productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as opera performances in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Zurich. He also recently completed a 60-city tour of Germany, Austria and Switzerland with Night of the Musicals, Europe’s longest-running touring musical show, as well as a recital tour of the B.C. Interior with internationally renowned organist Robert Kwan. Most recently, he directed and starred as Judas in the Amy Ferguson Institute’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar, selling out all six six shows, and making the mega-production one of Nelson’s most successful of all time. With Opera! (As it Wasn’t Intended), Armstrong mixes opera with rock, flamenco, country, and whatever else he feels like. Showcasing his versatile and powerful voice with his dexterity on guitar, Armstrong is literally a one-man rock opera. Opera! (As it Wasn’t Intended) was called “a beautiful and often electrifying display” by the Vue Weekly, and “a wonderfully entertaining hour. Five suns (out of five)” by Colin Maclean of the Edmonton Sun. Opera! (As it Wasn’t Intended) is being presented at the Snoring Sasquatch in Creston on June 7; doors open at 7, and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $15 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $18 at the door.

er was Tyrel Hawke, with Jamie Byram finishing second. The youngest singer in the group is 11-year-old Bernier from Fernie. Bernier is also the youngest singer to advance to the Kootenay finals in the two years of the contest, eclipsing Fikis who advanced in 2012 as a 14-year-old, but who is coming back again this year from Kimberley, one year older and wiser. “A number of the best singers from each community were relatively young this year, but are immensely talented,” said Gorham. “I am amazed that someone as young as Claire, and even Devin Fikis, who is now a veteran of both Kootenay championships at the ripe old age of 15 years old, can sing with such strength and power!” The Kootenays’ Best Singer contest runs at 7 p.m. June 1 at the Cranbrook Alliance Church (1200 Kootenay St. N.), which Gorham said is the most amazing singing venue in the Kootenays. Advance ticket prices are $5 for seniors, children and students, and $8 for adults, and can be reserved by those who live outside of Cranbrook by contacting Gorham (250-428-0305 or verngorham@telus.net) and paying at the door. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information, visit www. kootenaysbestsinger.com or like its page, “Kootenays’ Best Singer Contest”, on Facebook to stay updated on the contest throughout the year.

Columbia Basin Trust seeking input from residents COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST
What are the challenges in your region? How can these challenges be addressed? The Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) wants to hear what you feel are the key social, economic and environmental issues in your region, and invites you to have your say at www.cbt.org/engagement2013 by June 3. “Over the coming months, CBT is renewing its social, economic and environmental strategic plans,” said Neil Muth, CBT president and CEO. “We invite everyone to share their thoughts and ideas to ensure we are considering a wide variety of opinions as we, and others, plan for the years to come.” This engagement has two steps. First, residents will have an opportunity to respond to six open-ended questions. Next, in a few weeks, participants will be asked to review thoughts and ideas from other residents and assign “stars” to the ideas they like best. Participant information remains confidential. Finally, CBT will share a final report with all participants. CBT will be piloting an online engagement tool called THOUGHTstream. An evolution of the typical survey, this tool allows people to contribute individual thoughts on an issue and then arrive at a shared understanding by collectively prioritizing those thoughts. “This online tool is as easy to use as email, making it accessible to a majority of basin residents, which means broad public engagement can be done meaningfully and cost-effectively,” said Muth. “This is an opportunity to nurture mutual understanding-for us to learn from residents and for residents to learn from each other.” To have your say, go online and visit www. cbt.org/engagement2013. Input is welcome until June 3. CBT supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. To learn more about CBT programs and initiatives, visit www. cbt.org or call 1-800-505-8998.

Local chef happy at Ricky’s helm
Creston’s Brad Sutherland is a familiar face to local diners and it is wearing a wide smile these days. For nearly six months, he has been running the roomy state-of-the-art kitchen at Ricky’s All Day Grill. “The concept and system at Ricky’s is awesome,” he says. “Running the kitchen is a lot like conducting an orchestra.” Sutherland is a long-time associate of veteran chef Dennis Munro. He left their partnership at The Broaster House to take an offer from Ricky’s All Day Grill. Prior to that, he worked for a year at Crestview Manor, working alongside a Certified Chef de Cuisine. That experience, he says, was invaluable. At Ricky’s, Sutherland has teamed up with manager Melody Totten, who also had many years of experience in Creston restaurants behind her. “Building a core team is necessary to the success of any business,” he says. “Mel and I are doing that here.” In the busy summer months, the staff totals about 20. “Mel and her team are really dedicated to customer service, and we take the same attitude back in the kitchen,” he says. At Ricky’s All Day Grill, only the highest quality products are used, Sutherland says.
“We only use certified Angus steaks, for instance. And only brand name products, the best available, are found in our kitchen.” On the dinner menu, Sutherland says the hamburgers, pork ribs, steak and pasta are popular. Part of the appeal at Ricky’s lies in the
clean, modern setting that includes a roomy restaurant and intimate lounge. “The lounge is a great place to socialize,” he says. “People come in with friends or family and enjoy a couple of drinks and some appetizers—you can just see how much they enjoy the atmosphere.” In addition to the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, the kitchen staff also handles small and large catering jobs. “Of course we cater to most of the events next door at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre,” Sutherland says, “but we can also handle off-site events at places like the Community Complex or West Creston Hall.” Big or small needs, including banquets, weddings, lunch and dinner meetings, business functions and cocktail parties — “We can accommodate almost anything.” After working at a number of Creston restaurants, Sutherland is clearly relishing the experience at Ricky’s. “I really enjoy working with this team in a really nice atmosphere,” he says. “This is something that Creston has needed and deserves, and it’s going really well. Visitors to Creston appreciate what we have here at Ricky’s and I invite local residents to come out and see what they’ve been missing.”
