Dave Laxton of Bree Contracting Ltd. had the sparks flying in front of the 100 Mile Community Hall, while he was removing the benches on May 18. The work is part of the District of 100 Mile House’s downtown boulevard and shoulder upgrade over the next three years.

sign of the overgrown plants. The upgrade will be around the community hall, including one lot north and south of the hall, this year. It will move on to Third and Fourth streets, including paving from First to Fourth streets in 2014; and finish up from the Fields store to First Street in 2015. District director of operations Garry Laursen says the first phase of the project has a budget of $60,000 and the work should be completed by the end of June. Laursen notes that Bree
Contracting Ltd. started removing the old dead vegetation, which had reached the end of its usable lifespan and a couple of large trees that were rubbing against a building, about a month ago. The crew recently removed the three concrete pads and the benches that sat on them. They also removed all of the planter curbs, and a lot of concrete in that area, he adds. K2 Concrete, out of 83 Mile, is doing the cement work, as forms started going in earlier this week. Weather permitting, Laursen
says, they should also be able to pour the cement this week. He adds there will be a little bit more room for plants at the north end of the plaza in front of the hall. Laursen says the trees and plants have been ordered and are sitting at the local nurseries waiting to be planted next week. Currently, he is waiting for the new, powder-coated metal benches, which will have small tables attached to them. “It should all be looking pretty good by the end of June.”

Dix staying on as B.C. NDP leader By Tom Fletcher Black Press
Adrian Dix is staying on as British Columbia NDP leader while the party reviews its performance in the May 14 election and prepares for four more years in opposition. Dix didn’t specify a time frame for the election post-mortem, but said he will work to prepare the NDP opposition to hold the government to its elec-
tion commitments. “I assure you this review will spare nothing and no one, least of all me,” Dix told a news conference in Vancouver on May 22. “It must address the strategy and tactics we employed in the election and it must examine the fundamental question of who we are as a party and our relationship with the people of B.C.” Dix took responsibility for mishandling
a campaign that began with the NDP expecting a strong majority government after four years of turmoil in B.C. Liberal ranks over the Harmonized Sales Tax and other issues. He said a significant error was his surprise mid-campaign decision to turn against the proposal to expand the Trans-Mountain oil pipeline that runs from northern Alberta to Burnaby and Washington State.
Dix expressed no regret for avoiding negative advertising, although he was targeted by a long string of ads questioning his personal integrity and competence. He stood by his choice as an attempt to engage more voters, but the cam-
paign didn’t deliver a significant increase in the 51 per cent participation rate of the 2009 vote. “I don’t believe last week’s results are the end of positive politics in B.C. The answer to Continued on 4

Local Save-On-Foods store strong supporter of Children’s Hospital
Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
The 26th Annual BC Children’s Hospital Miracle Weekend on June 1-2 will be adding to its legacy of raising money for the urgent needs of the hospital. Since 1988, British Columbians have collected more than $200 million through Miracle Weekend fundraising campaigns. Overwaitea Food Group (OFG) has been supporting the BC Children’s Hospital for more than 20 years, and with the help of communities they serve, have contributed millions of dollars toward
Dix plans to hold Liberals to their promises
hospital improvement projects, advocacy programs and research initiatives. In 2007, OFG made a pledge of $20 million to support Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital that helps children get the care they need closer to home. Following that initial pledge, OFG has raised more than $10 million for Child Health BC. The 100 Mile House Save-On-Foods, which is owned by OFG, has been an active supporter of the initiative, having raised many dollars through fundraising events. This includes its annual spring Jeans Day campaign, during which team members can make a $5 donation each Friday for the opportunity to wear jeans at work for two months. During Jeans Day Week, they can wear denims all week for a $20 contribution. Store assistant manager Ryan Ogden
says many members of the business community and various organizations are also huge supporters of the campaign and eagerly purchase Jeans Day buttons when approached by Save-On-Foods team members. It’s the store’s biggest fundraiser, but Save-On-Foods also gets good community response to the Round up for Kids campaign during which shoppers are asked to round up their grocery bill to the nearest dollar and donate the difference to BC Children’s Hospital. Overwaitea Food Group then matches the donations dollar for dollar.
The Points for Kids program gives shoppers a chance to donate their More Rewards Points and have every thousand points matched with a $2 cash donation from Overwaitea. On a more casual basis, employees volunteer to hold hotdog sales at the store on their own time. in the past three months, Ogden says, a couple of dollars shy of $4,500 has been raised through various campaigns and will be added to an overall company total, which is being donated at the Miracle Weekend event. He notes that supporting BC Children’s

Hospital is something he and team members feel strongly about, more-so because a couple who are employees of the local store have a dependent child who is a regular beneficiary of the hospital’s services. “It hits close to home. They really need support from Children’s Hospital and it’s important that people know it helps local children. “Every child that needs help – that’s the best care they can get and it’s important to do anything we can to help families out.”

Cariboo on display in biking contest The Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association has given the Cariboo an opportunity to deliver an epic, seven-day mountain biking tour giveaway. Mountain Biking B.C., in partnership with the Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium, is offering a fully supported, one week trip from Aug. 3-11 to explore the region and its vast network of trails. The trip includes ground transportation, accommodations, professional guides and $1,000 cash. This is the first time in the giveaway’s threeyear existence the Cariboo has been a part of the tour. The grand prize tour will feature communities in the Cariboo and more, beginning with some high-country riding in Wells, followed up with some downtime at the ArtsWells Music Festival on the August long weekend. Next, the tour moves on to Williams Lake for a three-day adventure to experience the epicentre of Cariboo mountain biking culture and home to some of the best free-ride and all-mountain trails in the province. Then it’s off to 100 Mile House and The Hills Health Ranch for some wholesome crosscountry riding, followed by an overnight wilderness biking adventure at the Tyax Wilderness Resort and Spa. The final destination will be the world-famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Justin Calof, Cariboo Mountain Bike

This photograph of a visitor from Argentina was taken while she was riding the great cross-country trails in the 108 Mile area. The Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium has put up a lot of signage in the area to make it easier for folks to follow the trails.
Consortium executive director, says the CMBC has been working with Pat Corbett and Steve Law since 2010 to try to “grow mountain biking” in the 100 Mile House area. “The trails at 108 Mile, which start from The Hills Health Ranch and the 108 Mile Resort, are some of the best cross-country trails in the region.” Last year, the CMBC completed a comprehensive signage project, with the support of The Hills. “So it’s really accessible for riders and that’s kind of what we’ll be showcasing on the tour before they head down to the Coast.” For the better part of two years, the CMBC has been aggressively marketing the region’s mountain biking appeal, he adds. “We started our initiative in 2010, for the most part, when the website (www.ridethecariboo.ca) was

the Cariboo Regional District and Northern Development Initiative Trust have made in mountain biking in the Cariboo. It’s starting to pay off and the recognition is coming and it’s drawing more people up here so that’s really validating.” Calof says CMBC members will travel

Kindergym was packed on a cold and rainy May day, so toddlers and pre-schoolers had a lot of fun testing out all the toys, bikes and riding toys. Nevaeh Ratcliff was riding the purple car and twin sister, Karleena, got to be the passenger, while their mom, Addilyn, and Kim Baechmann make sure they are safe and having fun.

WEEK OF JUNE 2 TO JUNE 8, 2013 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Don’t make assumptions this week, Aries. You just can’t trust your gut instincts too much right now. It’s better to get all of the facts and act accordingly. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Playing matchmaker isn’t so easy, Taurus. You have to understand when people are compatible and when there just isn’t a spark. Let this one go. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you may have to pull back your focus on a problem in order to see it in a new light. Take some time away to regroup and then you can come back at full strength. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 A romantic relationship can be a balancing act, Cancer. You will learn this first hand this week when you have to come to a compromise with your partner. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, don’t apologize if you have to go your own way this week. Even if everyone is going in another direction, sometimes you just have to set your own course. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, while others may not be able to handle the confusion this week, you are fully capable of multi-tasking and making it through unscathed. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you may feel more emotionally charged this week but you have to think with your head and not your heart. A financial decision may need to reassessed. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, look at a situation with a practical eye. Is this really the best answer for the time being? Although you may be leaning one way, you might want to reconsider.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you need to get work done this week and that can’t happen when you are continually distracted. You might have to nip this one in the bud - quickly. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 A friend needs your support more than ever, Capricorn. Go to great lengths to give this person what they need, even if it means rearranging your schedule.
HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 An email or other correspondence from a past friend could stir up feelings you aren’t ready to deal with, Aquarius. Put this on the back burner until you are ready. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you are more interested in independence this week than hanging out in large groups. This includes hanging out with your spouse or partner.

Hepatitis C patient care advanced In recognition of May being hepatitis awareness month, a set of nine new user-friendly print and electronic hepatitis C resources is now available from the BC Centre for Disease Control. The new resources will help people affected by the condition, those at-risk and community services providers. The material will explain how to get tested and provide answers to frequently asked questions. The resource material also has information on how to prepare for treatment and other issues faced by people with hepatitis C. The new resources are available by mail order or
online on the BC Centre for Disease Control website: Attendance for Hepatitis C Care Project. The materials were developed through the “Attendance for Hepatitis C Care” research project led by Dr. Gail Butt. She and her team worked with many people infected with hepatitis C and health and social service providers across Canada to learn why people with hepatitis C delay, interrupt or avoid care. The team then developed resources to address the issues. A key issue is the need to increase detection and management of the disease by encour-
aging people to get tested, access follow-up care, and if necessary,

1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this!
