KITIMAT - A potential new hotel and shopping centre is in Kitimat’s future with the announcement of The Crossroads. Stuart Ramsay representing the Bryton Group presented his company’s vision to develop a “world class” hotel on the vacant, undeveloped lands along Highway 37S, between the Chamber of Commerce and Kitamaat Village Road. The company will also develop a commercial complex for eventual shopping opportunities. It’s the expected boom in Kitimat that brought the company here. Ramsay said the proposed LNG projects on the way will be significant population drivers. “There’s no question that Kitimat is on the cusp of an economic boom,” he said. That boom is part of what made Kitimat their destination for this project. Ramsay said that no other town in our region is currently being considered for other developments like this from them. “There’s over a kilometre of frontage there so when you’re looking for fantastic exposure for a commercial development it’s tough to get a strip that long,” he said. He said Prince Rupert is another town in a similar situation as us, but Kitimat has the advantage for them when it came to available land. “To find 50 acres in city limits with that length of frontage of commercial development, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity what’s going to happen in Kitimat,” he said. Ramsay explains that the hotel is the primary thrust of their proposal, and the rest will centre around the facility, which when fully complete will have 300 rooms, 150 regular guest rooms and 150 additional, extended stay units. “We know that if the hotel was open tomorrow it would be absolutely full,” said Ramsay.

He expects a phased approach, with the 150 rooms coming first, before the 150 extended stay rooms. He could have his way, work would begin on the project this year, to be completed in 2014, but there are infrastructure concerns that need to be dealt with. He said there has been little to no upgrades to the town’s infrastructures for 20 years so they’ll be doing studies on how to deal with lift stations, water pressure boosters and sewer issues. That said, the company has been working closely with the town to solve these issues, and are looking at solutions. Although no firm agreements have been made, Ramsay said the hotel will likely be a Coast Hotels branded property once built. In his presentation to council, the slides showing concept drawings of the hotel were labelled Coast Hotel Kitimat, and he said the company has worked with Coast Hotels in the past. He said when it comes to the commercial developments in the same complex, they’ll be looking at picking stores which will complement the hotel business. Franchise and chain stores are likely to be attracted to the property, and Ramsay said they’ve already had calls from companies interested in moving in to Kitimat with them. While Tim Hortons of course already exists in the City Centre, Ramsay says their presence is actually quite positive in terms of seeing more recognizable businesses on the horizon. “Tim Hortons tends to be one of the pioneers and leaders of the industry. They’re phenomenal at taking advantage and recognizing opportunities,” he said. As for any possible worry about competition with Kitimat’s existing City Centre downtown core, Ramsay isn’t worried that one will benefit over the other in terms of the local economy.

Keep yourself and others free of bear trouble this year TERRACE - It is that time of year again. Bears are coming out of their hibernation and some have already showed up in our communities. Bears that are attracted into our communities and work camps by poor waste management quickly learn to associate people with food and lose their natural fear of humans. These habituated bears may cause unexpected and unsafe bearhuman encounters. They may turn over garbage cans and in some cases may violently protect garbage that they consider theirs. Habituated bears eventually end up being shot by agencies whose responsibility it is to maintain the public safety (eg. Conserva-

tion Officer Service and RCMP). The Conservation Officer Service advises the public to be bearsmart regarding anything that might attract bears during the spring, summer and fall. If possible, place garbage bins in securely locked buildings. Bring out garbage bins on garbage removal day only and rinse them after. Double bag smelly waste like fish offal and place it in the freezer until garbage removal day. Feed your pets indoors or clean up any food your pet did not eat. Take bird seed feeders and bird suet down until winter arrives. Birds do not need additional food during spring, summer and fall. Clean your BBQ by turning up the heat and

remove the grease trap after each use. Do not deposit smelly matters like egg shells, fish offal and

TERRACE - Terrace Little Theatre’s production of Judith Thompson’s “Perfect Pie” recently swept the Skeena Zone Drama Festival and earned the honour of representing northwest BC at the provincial theatre festival, MAINSTAGE 2013 in Kamloops. The “little theatre that could” will compete with nine other shows for best play in British Columbia. Adjudicator Garry Davey had high praise for “Perfect Pie” and the cast and crew are hard at work putting his suggestions for getting to the next level a reality. To take a full length production on the road with a cast and crew of 12 is costly. TLT is reaching out to the community asking for a show of support. They need to raise almost $10,000! There are many ways you can help: a cash donation, sponsoring fuel or gift cards, contributing an item or service to the Silent Auction, and donating empties to the Bottle Drive. Terrace Little Theatre has not had the opportunity to go to MAINSTAGE in five long years. Please help them get there! Every little bit makes a difference. You can also buy

food, soap, detergent, tooth paste etc. out of reach from bears. If confronted with a habituated bear, please dial the toll-free Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.

Fishermen say they’re being targeted By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT Fishermen from Prince Rupert and as far away as the Nass Valley say they are being unfairly targeted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, claiming the DFO has a hidden agenda of ridding coast of the commercial fishery all together. The DFO is requiring a new monitoring regime aboard salmon fishing vessels that includes the purchase of a $300 log book to record bycatch and the spotting of whales, turtles and birds, as well as having to hire an on-board monitor service provider to track the vessel’s activities. The United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union (UFAWU) projects these new costs will equal out to $650 per fisherman, or 13 per cent of before-tax income, something it says fishermen simply cannot afford. “It’s really just harassment of the gillnet and seine fleet on the North Coast for no conservation reason what-

soever... If they want to have at-sea observers, even though we’re the only fleet, that’s fine, we’ll have at-sea observers. We just can’t afford to pay for them. And there is no reason, we’re not catching anything we’re not supposed to,” said Joy Thorkelson of the UFAWU. “The DFO is not benefitting me or anybody else in this room. They have a hidden agenda to get rid of the people sitting here and if they can’t do it one way, they’ll do it another... They have totally decimated my life,” said fisherman Paul Paulson. Jennifer Nener, DFO’s director of salmon and the pacific integrated commercial fishery initiative, said the required monitoring is nothing new and has been on the North Coast from 2001 to 2005 and 2008 to 2012. However, how those costs are covered has changed. “During those years the program was funded by DFO, but as of April 1 the department is not paying for those services any more,” she said. “It was a govern-

Fishermen discuss new monitoring regulations they say are designed to kill off the commercial fishery. ment-wide decision to shift the costs to those who benefit from the resources.” Making the situation even worse for the North Coast fleet is that Skeena and Nass fishermen claim they are being required to have atsea monitors. The DFO claims the requirement is because the MSC ecocertification achieved by the fishery requires counting steelhead, but the UFAWU points out that the B.C. Minister of Environment Steve Thomson, whose Ministry is responsible for steelhead, is on record saying there is no conservation issue but rather an allocation issue. This raised concerns about not only the treatment of commercial fishermen

as opposed to sport fishermen but about potential discrimination. “The only place people have to go through this program — they are shoving down are throats this year — is in the north... The funny thing is, it just so happens that the biggest First Nations fleet is in the Northwest, so there are trust issues,” said commercial fisherman Henry Clifton. “The mismanagement of the DFO is being taken out on the commercial fishermen. That is not right. What are they doing to the other sectors? Nothing. It keeps coming back to the commercial fishermen to pay for all their mistakes and it’s not going to correct anything,”

said fisherman Victor Kelly. However, Nener said the North Coast is not alone in having to pay for monitoring. “There are other catch-monitoring programs in place in different areas throughout B.C. this year,” she said. In a show of solidarity, Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem joined a group of commercial fishermen at a news conference on May 22 to protest the new monitoring requirements. “It is of grave concern... The species there is supposedly a concern about is no concern. So really it is a monitoring process that, for all intents and purposes, won’t do what the intention is,” he said.

Sweet sounds coming on Sunday By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Rotary Community Choir will be presenting the 23rd annual Sweete Serenade this weekend, offering a wide variety of music, delicious homemade desserts and an art auction to raise funds for equipping the Charles Hays Secondary School Music Studio. “The Sweete Serenade is a rare opportunity to have sweet sounds for your ears and at the same time have sweet things to eat,” Peter Witherly, the organizer of the event, said. Three Prince Rupert groups will be showcasing their musical talents, the first being the Rotary Community Choir performing tunes both accompanied and A Capella, the A Capella quartet the Rolling Tones consisting of John Hughes, Gordon Bruce, Brian Roberts and Witherly singing music from mainly the 60s and 70s, and the Charles Hays Secondary School Jazz Band directed by teacher Tristan Fox. Sweetening up the evening of entertainment is an unlimited amount of beverages and homemade desserts for those attending. While treats are part of the ticket cost, organizers are encouraging those at Sweete Serenade

to dig in their pockets and bid on three beautiful pieces of art being auctioned off at the event, as proceeds from the auction will go toward the CHSS Music Studio. Pieces by artists Clare Singleton, Todd Stephens and Gerda Volvz will be auctioned off at the event, with the pieces being displayed at the Bank of Montreal, TD Bank and Northern Savings Credit Union, where pre-bidding can also take place. The three pieces of art were acquired by the Prince Rupert and Region Music Society through the Ridley Terminals Northern Art Initiative. The capital cost of the music studio has now been covered by local groups and businesses, however funds raised from the auction will go toward equipping the studio with items such as music stands, chairs, a sound system, and some large percussion instruments that need to stay in the room. Witherly estimated anywhere from $50,000 to $70,000 worth of equipment is needed. Tickets for the Sweete Serenade can be purchased at Four Seasons Flowers or from Rotary Community Choir members, with the performance taking place on Sunday, June 2 at the Highliner Inn. Doors will open at 6:30, with the performance starting at 7 p.m.

Relay for Life is tomorrow The Northern Connector  Friday, May 31, 2013

By Cameron Orr

The Northern connector

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Relay for Life event starts tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. It will start a full day of music, activities, and fundraising for cancer research.

As of Tuesday, fundraising totaled over $60,000, and organizers are aiming to beat last year’s total of around $110,000. The track layout has been changed slightly this year, and organizers sought to bring people closer together, and closer to the

music on stage, which has been fully booked for the day. There will also be little competitions among teams throughout the day. The event begins with a Survivors Lap, and the relay concludes at 10 p.m.

Door knocking for food-raising KITIMAT - A charity program by Purolator and Warehouse One will have the jean store employees knocking on doors in Kitimat for the week starting June 3. The program, called the Tackle Hunger campaign, is run nationally and seeks to raise money and food donations for local food banks and programs. It’s anticipated in town that

the food collected will be split between the Food Bank and the Food Share Program, but all donations will be used locally. This is the 11th year the program has run, and the local Warehouse One manager is hoping to be able to out-collect all the other stores in the area. She said they’ve already collected 125 lbs, well ahead of the

program’s official start. In addition to store employees door knocking, people can bring in their non-perishable food item or donation to the Warehouse One store in City Centre Mall. The manager’s personal goal is to collect 400 lbs of food. Questions about the program can be called in to either Tammy or Janet at 250-632-6334.

MP says rules need changing Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP says rule changes are needed as Kitimat faces economic development. Nathan Cullen spoke of the issue during a regular media scrum about temporary foreign workers, in particular around a recent ruling in favour of HD Mining, who had brought in Chinese workers for a

mine project near Tumbler Ridge. Cullen said the rules are so weak right now that he’s already seeing a lot of people in Kitimat and beyond who can’t get at jobs they’re qualified for. “This is offensive to me and to many. You’d think we’d be able to at least receive some benefit from an economic boom yet the govern-

ment has designed our labour laws and immigration laws in such a way that anyone can bring in hundreds of thousands of workers at once and displace Canadian workers,” said Cullen. He added that suggested changes by the NDP in the past were dismissed by the Conservatives.

Bull-O-Rama returns next week By Cameron Orr

The Northern connector

KITIMAT - Bull-O-Rama is almost back again for another wild ride at Tamitik Arena. The big show takes place on June 8. The rodeo itself will be two rounds of professional bull riding, broken up with the chaos of a wild horse race. Claude Chausse and his mustang show have been welcomed back for the year, and he’ll host a

free show at 10:30 a.m. following a pancake breakfast. Profits from Bull-O-Rama are given to local worthy causes, and over the past five years $100,000 has been given out. The Snowflake Community Fairgrounds Society, the group which puts together this event each year, will use the money raised to maintain and overhaul the Kitimat Fairgrounds, just outside of town. Bull-O-Rama is also a fundraising platform for other groups,

from the local animal shelter to the ice skating club, to dragon boat teams. Like in passed years, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Kitimat General Hospital Foundation for health care services outside the reach of Northern Health’s current budget. Tickets for the event are available at Kal Tire (Kitimat and Terrace locations) and Cooks Jewelers (Kitimat and Terrace). Tickets are also available at the Tamitik Arena office.

The north is on a wildfire alert By Suzanne Pearce

SMITHERS - The Northwest Fire Centre is urging the public to exercise caution with any outdoor burning activities, since hot and dry weather is expected to the north. Over the past week, hot and dry weather north of Kitwanga increased the fire danger rating in that region. The fire danger rating now is “high north of Bob Quinn Lake, with an “extreme fire danger rating in the Iskut area. When the dead grass from

last summer dries out, it becomes highly flammable. Almost all wildfires at this time of year are caused by humans and are therefore preventable. Homeowners and industrial personnel are encouraged to consult the B.C. FireSmart manual and take the following precautions when conducting an open burn: •  Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the fire and prevent it from escaping. • Do not burn during windy conditions. Weather conditions

can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires. • Create a fireguard at least one metre wide all around the planned fire site, by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material. • Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure that your fire is completely extinguished and the ashes are cold. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1 800 6635555. toll-free or call *5555 on your cellphone.

Rockstock show benefits the Lester Centre By Martina Perry The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT - 50 budding musicians learning the ropes from music teacher Ian Lihou showed off their skills in the annual Rockstock performance over the weekend. The yearly show gives music students a chance to take the stage and gain confidence, while raising money for a local cause. Funds raised from Rockstock 2013 will go to the Lester Centre of the Arts, a group

Ring System Music Studio musicians have donated toward in the past. Lihou said the Lester Centre is a spectacular amenity in Prince Rupert, and is valuable for not only himself and his students, but all Prince Rupert musicians. The concert raised approximately $1,400, which will go toward replenishing the theatre’s technical

equipment. “I thought they did fabulously. They all stepped up to the plate, and gave their best performances,” Lihou said. Students taking the stage Rockstock Ian Lihou for ranged from 10 years old to 18, and played something for fans of all musical genres.

“They all stepped up to the plate and gave their best performances.”

Young musicians performed pop songs that can currently be heard on the radio, rock music from various decades, country tunes, and even some original music. For some it was their first time on stage, while others have been part of Ring System Music Studio concerts for a number of years. Musician showed off their vocal abilities, as well as guitar, bass, violin and percussion playing. Musical numbers were performed in both smaller groups, and all music students at once.

BC Children’s Hospital helps kids get care closer to home When 16-year-old Elliott Reid steps in front of the television cameras on the evening of June 1 as a co-host on BC Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Weekend telethon on Global BC, he will be able to speak from experience. The teen, who recently moved from Tumbler Ridge to Dawson Creek, has been a patient at the hospital since he was seven. Elliott was twice airlifted from Tumbler Ridge to BC Children’s Hospital when he suffered heart damage caused by a strep infection. He has had heart surgery at the hospital twice, once spending several days in the hospital’s pediatric Intensive Care Unit with his chest open while doctors monitored him for infection. Following the surgeries he received followup care at a pediatric clinic in Prince George. The clinic, at University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, was equipped with funding from Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital. The clinic receives over 3,500 patient visits annually, saving families who live in and around Prince George the cost and inconvenience of a trip to Vancouver. “I love going to Vancouver now to participate in Miracle Weekend,” Elliott says. “But I know it was always a big hassle for my parents to have to take me all the way to Vancouver when I was sick.” Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive director of Child Health BC, says one of Child Health BC’s goals is to relieve families of the burden of travel. “We’re working with caregivers all over BC to ensure children across the province receive care in a consistent manner and, ideally, close to home.” Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respectively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo, Prince George and Prince Rupert have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participated in Child Health BC’s workshops. O’Donnell credits the Overwaitea Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s growing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a presence in so many BC communities. Overwaitea Food Group President Darrell Jones agrees. “At the Overwaitea Food Group, we’re committed to the health and wellness of kids and families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and with the help of our communities, we’ve contributed millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects, advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played elliott with Global BC host steve Darling

a key role in making this fundraising success possible.” Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC. Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children. Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the

hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support research, equipment purchases and training. On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs. “We are building a new hospital, but in the meantime we have to make sure we continue to provide BC’s kids with the very best in care today,” says Gold. “Every year people from across the province make donations in support of the hospital and it makes a huge difference. Elliott Reid is proof of that.” Elliott’s father, Tyler Reid, agrees: “BC Children’s Hospital has done so much for Elliott so we’re happy to help the hospital in any way we can. And it’s certainly more enjoyable to make the trip to Vancouver so that we can help other kids than it was when we were scared for Elliott’s life.”

JUNE 1 & 2, 2013 On June 1 and 2, tune in to Miracle Weekend, broadcast live from BC Children’s Hospital, on Global BC from 7:00pm on Saturday, June 1 until 5:30pm on Sunday, June 2 The 26th annual BC Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Weekend is a two-day celebration that showcases the best of BC Children’s Hospital: patients, their families, caregivers and supporters who come from every corner of BC. BC Children’s Hospital receives over 200,000 visits from patients from across the province every year. Donations help the hospital deliver the best in care every day, and are helping to prepare for the future by supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and better access to care for children in or close to their home communities. Please support BC Children’s Hospital.

At the Overwaitea Food Group, we’re very proud of our longstanding commitment to investing in the health of kids and their families. We’re grateful to everyone who supports us in this effort. Our team members, customers and suppliers have all played a key role in our fundraising success over the years. We’ve been supporting BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades, and we’ve raised millions of dollars in support of capital improvement projects, important research initiatives and advocacy programs designed to help keep our kids safe by reducing preventable injuries. In 2007, we made a $20 million pledge to support Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital that helps get kids in BC get the care they need, closer to home. Since then, we’ve raised more than $10.7 million toward our goal, and Child Health BC has been able to put this concept into action in a number of communities throughout BC. We are grateful for the amazing commitment and fund raising efforts driven by OFG team members who encourage the generosity of our customers and suppliers.

June and Dave operated ´Moose CampÂľ out of Clearwater, a Ă y Ă€shing paradise that was visited by people from all over North America for world-class Ă y Ă€shing and June¡s fabulous cooking. ,n 1980 she moved to Kamloops with Dave and lived a wonderful and productive life here. Laughter, love, nature, family, friends, dogs and cats Ă€lled June¡s life and she will be greatly missed by those that knew her. Adults with physical and mental disabilities face housing issues even greater than the average person. Thompson Community Services’ mission is to help meet those needs. For more than 20 years, Thompson has met the housing and personal needs of people with a range of disabilities. Now we’re hoping we can find individuals in the Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert area, who can help us continue that tradition of services. Our clients have a variety of needs, but most simply need a home where people will care about them. They require supervision and need the support and stability that comes from living in a home. What they really need is someone to care, just as Thompson Community Services has cared. We are seeking caregivers who have extensive experience and knowledge around supporting individuals who present challenging mental health conditions and disabilities. If you have extra room in your home, and want to take on one of the most rewarding challenges you’ll ever face, we’ll be happy to give you more information. MARTINA PERRY / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Column: Golf industry begins promoting a shorter game THE GOLF industry is facing a 250-yard par-3. Yeah, that’s hard. Golf is struggling because the number of people playing the game has been on the decline for the past few years and that means – what else? – a decline in revenue. Golf courses sell fewer green fees and memberships; sales of golf balls and clubs go down. Golf resorts attract fewer tourists. Myriad reasons abound for golf falling on hard times but one refrain heard often is that the game takes too long and young people aren’t taking up the game because . . . well, they just don’t have the time in this go-go world we live in. But rather than just throw up their hands and saying “there’s no way I can get to this 250-yard par-3 in one shot,” the golf industry is coming up with what it hopes are solutions. One is encouraging

Bruce Penton

Overtime a return to the nine-hole round. And why not? A baseball game takes a little over two hours; a curling game is two hours or so; a night out at a hockey game is maybe three, by the time you take travel time into account. A supper at a nice restaurant with that special someone takes around two hours. But golf is four hours, or more, and that

is the obstacle the golf industry is facing as it tries to entice newcomers to the game. And to that end, Golf Digest magazine is leading the charge on the nine-hole round. “We’re not trying to get everyone who plays 18 holes to play nine holes instead,” Jerry Tarde, Golf Digest’s chairman and editor in chief, said. “We’re after the people who aren’t playing because they think golf is a half-day proposition, which it isn’t.” As courses get longer and new equipment is helping golfers hit the ball farther, the sport might seem to be a marathon to non-golfers who might consider taking up the game. That’s why the ninehole initiative, and the “play-it-forward” approach (where golfers are encouraged to play from forward tees to make the game easier and, ergo, more enjoyable) are giving hope to those in the golf indus-

try that the game will not only survive, but thrive in the future. As for that 250-yard par-3? Bang a driver, make a four, and consider it a par. It’s only a game. • Golf Hall of Fame inductee Colin Montgomerie on why everyone likes fellow Hall of Famer Fred Couples: “All the women want to be with him, and all the men want to be like him.” • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald, on Twitter: “Marlins closing upper deck for some games. What a major inconvenience for the six people who’ve been sitting up there!” • Blogger Steve Burgess, on the Canucks’ early departure from the NHL playoffs: “Let's look on the bright side. When the Canucks suffer a catastrophic structural collapse, no one dies.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@yahoo.ca

Ski club wraps season Contributed THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - With the long days of summer ahead of us, winter is a distant memory for most of us. However, for the Shames Mountain Ski Club, time off the mountain means dryland training, fundraising and planning for the upcoming season. For youngsters that are ready to go fast and shred hard, the club offers programs designed to help them reach their ski and snowboard potential. This past season, the Shames Mountain Ski Club offered development and competitive programs to almost 60 freestyle and alpine skiers and snowboarders. Athletes that are keen on competing have access to competitive level

training and events to help them become strong competitors. Many of our club athletes competed in a variety of local, regional and provincial events. Locally and regionally, our athletes were among the top competitors; we even had two athletes place in the top 10 in provincial level events; Shivohn Peters in the BC Ski Cross Championships and Jared Thornton in slopestyle at the BC Timber Tours in Vernon, BC. At Shames Mountain, our athletes train using the natural features of the mountain; however, the club is hoping to develop an air site for this upcoming season. This type of training feature which will reduce our dependency on Mother Nature and increase consistency for athletes to progress. See Ski Club Page 19

Marlins swim in New West Contributed

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Two swimmers from the Kitimat Marlins swim club attended the 35th annual Hyack Youth Cup Invitational Swim Meet in New Westminister. With over 400 hundred swimmers in attendance from across B.C., Washington, Oregon and Newfoundland, and the fact that each swimmer must be a AAA Provincial qualifier to attend, made the competition fierce. The Marlin swimmers held their own though and had some great results. Alivia Salema (12) competing in the 12 and under girls category had some excellent results. She made finals (top eight finishers in the heats compete in finals for medals and cash) in a number of events. Salema placed 4th in the 400 meter Individual Medley and 400 freestyle as well as a 5th in the 400 freestyle. Kleanza Cathers (13) competing in the 13-14 girls category placed 8th in the 50 freestyle as well placed 10th in the 400 IM. She achieved her second Far Western qualifying standard in the 400 IM allowing her to compete in Western USA’s most important age group swim meet, Far Western Championships. Far Western Champs this year will be in San Jose, California.

Ski club says thanks

This type of feature will allow local skiers and boarders to better prepare and compete on par with clubs from larger resort mountains. The club also hopes that it will attract other northern clubs to train and to spend some time at Shames Mountain. We would like to thank My Mountain Coop Shames Mountain for their support and for allowing us to train at Shames Mountain. We’d also like to thank Dr. Mark Forgie, Ruins Board Shop and Safeway for your generosity and support of our athletes as they trained for competitions, travelled to events and proudly represented the Northwest across the province. Lastly, we’d like to thank all the families that supported their kids as they worked hard and played even harder on the mountain this year. If you are interested in learning more about the Shames Mountain Ski Club feel free to email shamesmountainskiclub@gmail.com

TERRACE - Terrace’s elite club volleyball players are in the midst of Baden Cup tryouts in Smithers – a location first for the northwest. For the 16U girls, Brooklyn Ruffle, Cassidy Kitchen and Morgan Monkman (who plays in Terrace but is from Smithers) will attend the tryouts – a fierce competition because the Baden Cup, held in Kamloops July 1-4, is the path to the provincial and national team.

For the 14U girls, Mya Siemens, Correina McNeice, Lauren Root, Delany Kitchen, Suttira Johansen, and Brianna Greer will attend, gaining a wealth of experience but with less pressure. And 16U coach Carmen Didier says it’s a big deal that BC Volleyball is hosting these tryouts in our area for the first time. “It tells us they are recognizing that there are athletes in the northwest they have noticed to have good enough skills to be playing the sport at a higher level,” she said.
