Items and prices available in-store at the location shown only. Advertisement effective Friday, May 31st to Thursday, June 6th, 2013. Fernie seniors gather at the drop-in centre, which will be upgraded with support from Columbia Basin Trust. Fernie seniors, along with other residents and community groups, will be able to enjoy an upgraded seniors dropin centre thanks in part to $25,000 from CBT. “This renovation will help increase safety for seniors and working conditions for volunteers,” said Jim Booth, President, Senior Citizens Club of Fernie and District. “It will also make the centre more appealing for outside groups who wish to access the facilities, sustaining the rental income that’s so vital to supporting new and existing seniors programs.” The renovation will include replacing interior and exterior doors with accessible entrances, replacing flooring to reduce the risk of tripping and upgrading washrooms with amenities like accessible bathroom stalls. The kitchen— relied upon to make hot lunches, snacks and bake sale items, plus used by event caterers and others—will receive a new stove and new countertops and cabinets. “This community asset is used frequently by a variety of groups,” said Jennifer Krotz, CBT Community Liaison. “The renovation project will help improve it for those who currently use it, plus increase opportunities for the centre to expand, increase membership and offer new
programs to the broader community.” The seniors club has existed since 1960, providing a place for Fernie seniors to meet

In 2010, Falkins and Western announced plans which will see Falkins become part of the Western family of brokerages by January 1, 2014. “At Falkins Insurance Group, we’re committed to being a leading corporate citizen in the communities where we operate,” said Pete Stefano, CEO of Falkins. “We see Support The Cause Day as an excellent chance for us to join Western Financial Group in raising money to help make communities across Western Canada safer, happier and more active.” The Foundation’s annual Support The Cause Day walk will begin at each local Western branch and business office. All participating employees will wear a bright red Support The Cause T-shirt. Money raised from Support The Cause Day goes toward community infrastructure grants, student bursaries and other worthwhile endeavours that support public health, recreation and education in communities Western serves. “Last year, Support The Cause Day raised nearly $90,000 for the Western Communities Foundation,” said John Jenner, vice-president of marketing and communications at Western Financial Group and executive director of the Western Communities Foundation. “This year, we hope to surpass last year’s total. All the money we raise we will in turn give back to communities across Western Canada.” To help raise money, Western donates $50 per participating employee which is topped up by pledges employees personally gather from members of their community. All the money donated by Western and gathered by employees goes to the Western Communities Foundation. Individuals can make donations online toward Support The Cause Day by visiting www.supportthecause.ca. Western Financial Group is a Western Canada based, diversified, financial services company serving more than 600,000 customers. Submitted EKC’s CEO, Mr. Jody Burk, joins credit union peers to see firsthand how cooperatives are making a difference internationally. Credit unions and cooperatives have a history of coming together to share expertise and support each other for the benefit of their members and their
communities. Locally they support community projects with donations and expertise. Beyond our backyard they also help. Burk has joined five other credit union CEOs on the Cooperative Development Foundations’ (CDF) Journey Out of Poverty tour to Cambodia from May 10–18. CDF funds growth and development pro-

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Blue Jewels in Your Berry Patch
There are few things that say “ It’s Summer!” more than fresh berries. From raspberries on your ice cream to blueberry pies, berries combine sweet and tart flavours with juiciness and aroma that makes any meal into a celebration of summer. There are hundreds and hundreds of different types of shrub fruit and even within one type - such as blueberry - there are many varieties to choose from. Some people are surprised to learn that we can grow blueberry in our area, but I can happily report that many gardeners do and they are a very hardy shrub fruit. Blueberry plants create a beautiful landscape feature, the berries are rich in beneficial antioxidants and - most importantly - delicious. Blueberry bushes range between 30 inches and 7 feet in height and between 3 and 4 feet in width, depending on variety. Most blueberries are ready to be harvested in mid to late July. The Chippewa Blueberry is one of the blueberries I recommend for our region, because of its vigour, growth rate and quality of the harvested fruit. Its berries take longer to ripen, but Chippewa is an extremely productive variety. This is a self-pollinating plant, but as with most fruit shrubs it will do better with a second variety grown alongside. If you cannot decide which flavour to pick or you want maximum choice of flavours with limited space available, you can give the 3-in-1 Triple Play Blueberry a try. This plant is hardy to Zone 3 and sports three different blueberries in one pot. That means three times the harvest, three different types of tastes and cross-pollination all in a single planting. Some gardeners here in the Kootenays have difficulties with growing blueberries. Typically, this has nothing to do with low winter temperatures, but rather with our local soil conditions. In most gardens, the soil tends to be more on the alkaline side - sometimes also referred to as “sweet” soil - and blueberries need acidic, or “sour” soil. You can create more acidic growing conditions by incorporating sulphur into the soil and using an acidic fertilizer. Blueberries also like moist and well-drained soil and while they can survive in partial shade, you need full sun to get good flavor and great yields. Another blue jewel for your berry patch is the Honeyberry. Also sometimes referred to as the “Blueberry for the Prairie” because of its extreme hardiness, fabulous fruit size, yield and most importantly taste, the flavour of this fruit is described as a blueberry with black raspberry overtones. They can be used for just about anything that blueberry is used for such as pastries, jams, juice, ice cream, candies and even wine. The honeyberry will grow just about anywhere. From weather conditions, to light conditions to soil conditions, this is probably one of the most adaptable plants out there. One of its claims to fame is that it will withstand winter temperatures as cold as -48 Celsius and the blossoms will withstand cold temperatures down to -6 Celsius, so there is less fear of damage from a late spring frost. Watering is one thing that is extremely important in the formative years of the honeyberry. Birds can also be an issue. They love the fruit, so be sure to secure bird netting around your crop if you do not want to share these delicious berries. Honeyberry are usually the first fruit bearing bush to be ready to harvest, even earlier than strawberries, but you will have to wait three to four years before being able to harvest enough fruit off the bush. All honeyberry plants require pollination from other honeyberries and there are a few varieties that are noted for their exceptional pollinating abilities, in fact one pollinizer will pollinate as many as eight plants. The honeyberry require two unrelated varieties to be in close proximity to each other for good pollination. Whatever shade of blue you prefer, adding some honeyberries or blueberries to your garden is sure to make your berry patch a masterpiece. Till next time... happy gardening Submitted by Tara

back Adventurer, Park Ranger, Wildlife Caretaker, Lifestyle Photographer and Taste Master. With over 330,000 applicants from 196 countries, Snell is the only Canadian to make it to the finals. The position he is in the running for – Wildlife Caretaker – would find Snell living on Kangaroo Island in South Australia for six months, swimming with great white sharks, snorkeling with sea lions, hanging out with kangaroos and helping to conserve the pristine natural environment of the island. He explains, “Kangaroo Island is about the size of Prince Edward Island and is basically a zoo with no fences. I am very much looking forward to travelling there and getting to know the local endemic wildlife and interacting with the wonderful Australian people.” Since completing the Adventure Tourism Business Operations program at the College’s Golden campus in 2009, Snell completed a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded internship in Ecuador, focussing on sustainable development through tourism. That experience helped him obtain his current employment with a Canadian adventure tourism company working as a tour leader in the Southern Cone of South America. He leads small group ad-

It is an incredible opportunity for young Canadians to jump-start a career in international tourism. The program helped prepare me to work in the industry and to have a chance at such an exciting opportunity like this competition.” Snell will travel to Australia on June 10 and take part in a week of competitions before the final decision of who will be awarded the ‘Best Job’ is made on June 21. Composting is something everyone can do Sponsored by the Compost Council of Canada, this year’s event will take place from May 5 to 11, with the theme “Feed the Soil . . . COMPOST!” Both industry and individuals are the targets of this awareness campaign. Composting is an eco-friendly activity within everyone’s reach, whether you live in a downtown apartment, a pretty country

You’d be surprised at just how easy it is to compost. You will also be surprised at the difference in your garden after treating the soil with your own compost.

The Recent Provincial Election
1. With a strong majority, the BC Liberal government has a clear mandate to pursue economic development and job creation and an obligation to balance the provincial budget. 2. Balancing the budget this year will mean tough decisions by government, no tax increases, and saying “no” to spending requests outside the budget. 3. A mandate for economic development in resource extraction and tourism requires a commitment by government to balance growth with sustainable activities on the land. MLA Bill Bennett

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

Fiddler on the Roof Review
STUDENT REMINDERS
-If you are interested in playing Tennis join the Tennis Team!
If you were one of the few who failed to attend Mount Baker’s latest production, “The Fiddler on the Roof ”, you missed out! As one of MBSS’ greatest musicals ever, it was well equipped with a great cast, wonderful vocals, and a superb orchestra. Thanks so much to all the hours put in to make it as fantastic as it was. A big shout-out to the cast for all the hours spent rehearsing, the orchestra for the breath-taking music, the stagecraft class for the beautifully designed sets and everyone else who supported the play by coming out to watch it!
Art & Photography The Photography 12 class is assisting Cranbrook’s Kootenay Knit & Apparel Company with their Pink Mitten campaign. Students are creating photographs that will highlight the pink mittens and be used on their web site and the Pink Mitten website. One dollar from each pair of mittens will go towards the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Kootenay Knit & Apparel’s goal is to raise $2,500,000. Pink Mittens will be sold locally starting December 1st.

Composting from page 11
all you need is your kitchen waste and lawn cuttings! One of the most persistent myths about composting is that it smells bad. True enough, mixing kitchen waste, leaves, and maybe even a few worms in the same container doesn’t seem very appealing. However, it is really just a matter of chemistry. Compost will not smell if the different elements of a good composting recipe are respected. If you’d like to start composting, your first step should be to learn all about the procedures to follow.

RELAY FOR
LIFE! Another successful year for Cranbrook’s Relay for Life! Cranbrook’s 2013 Relay for Life has come and gone, but this year’s event will live on in the hearts
and minds of everyone who participated. Turnout was high for this year’s event and people from all walks
of life took their turn on the track in an effort to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for cancer.
According to Relay for Life BC, “The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser.
It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones
lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.” Congratulations and
thanks to all who participated in this important event. Photos by Darcy Wiebe

Special Olympics at home Submitted
Kimberley/Cranbrook Special Olympics began in the mid-1980’s. Our Local began with bowling and has now grown to include the sports of Alpine Skiing, Swimming, Softball, Golf and Powerlifting.Other programs we offer include Fundamentals and Active Startwhich introduce our younger athletes to sport-related activities. Club Fit is a night dedicated to games, fun and socialization for all ages & abilities. We typically start our programming in September and go through to June with seasonal activities. In addition, Special Olympics has championed the Healthy Athlete program which focuses on all aspects of a healthy life style. Kimberley/Cranbrook Special Olympics boasts 81 athletes ranging in age from 8 to over 60. Our athletes are able to attend local and/or travel to regional
competition. Competition in Special Olympics follows a four year cycle - regional, provincial, national and world games for both summer and winter sports. Athletes qualify from regional to provincial to national and finally to world competition. We are proud to have had athletes who have qualified to travel to many of these competitions. These athletes maintain a rigorous training schedule with local training coaches, and at national and world levels attend training camps to reinforce the training they do locally. The Special Olympic Provincial Summer Games are taking place in Langley from July 11-14 and Kimberley/ Cranbrook is sending individual athletes to compete in bowling and swimming, as well as our softball team a total of 18 athletes. Travelling with these athletes will be fivecoaches and three support people from this
Local – all volunteers. Our sports require volunteers to coach and help with programming as well as sit on our Board which answers directly to Special Olympics British Columbia. We fundraise to assist in travel costs and to ensure that coaches and volunteers have the resources available to them to ensure safe and effective sporting opportunities for our athletes. The Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Staples Toonie Campaign and the Safeway Special Olympics Awareness are national fundraising campaigns and take place right across Canada. We are fortunate to have each of these campaigns in Cranbrook. Our athletes look forward to participating in these events and are especially looking forward to playing softball with the RCMP.
As a national organization, we have been working with children, youth and adults with an intellectual disability for over forty years. Within this time, it has grown well beyond being an event to become a year-round movement with chapters in almost every province and territory. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Special Olympics movement has grown to include nearly 3.7 million athletes in 229 accredited programs in 170 countries, including Canada. On June 9, 1969, in
Toronto, Ontario, the very first Special Olympics national competition was held, less than one year after the sport movement was born on Chicago’s Soldier Field. It attracted 1,400 individuals with an intellectual disability from towns and cities across our country. Competing in athletics, aquatics, and – no surprise here – floor hockey, they joined Harry “Red” Foster, the visionary who worked tirelessly to bring the sport movement to this country. The Canadian broadcast legend, advertising executive and
philanthropist was inspired by what he had seen in Chicago, Illinois, one year earlier. Today, the movement has expanded across Canada and it is no longer just a cycle of national competitions. Special Olympics now enriches the lives of more than 34,000 children, youth and adults who are registered in its 17 Olympic-type winter and summer sport programs, as well as the lives of their family, friends and supporters. These programs run year-round out of local sport clubs.

These sports opportunities provide athletes with far more than the physical benefits of improved health and athletic ability. Through their participation in Special Olympics programs, athletes also develop social skills, cultivate friendships, strive for and achieve goals and increase their self-esteem.

In addition to year-round sports programs, SOBC offers athletes opportunities to compete at the regional, provincial, national and international level through a four-year competition cycle for summer and winter sports. “When we heard about Special Olympics, it changed my whole life. Wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of people who, with short notice, came to our beloved Chris’s celebration of Life, some traveling many many miles to be with him. We would also like to say thanks for the many acts of kindness shown to us in the form of phone calls, flowers, cards and food. It all meant so much to us in our time of need. Special thanks to long time family friend Jack Bowers and all his staff at Bowers Funeral Home for going above and beyond to make the celebration of life to Chris so special. To Mavis, Even though she is part of our family, for the phone calls and organizing she did on our behalf. Also to teachers Bob Henderson and “Varg” for their touching and heart rendering tributes to Chris. To Lisa Wynn for her “special” tribute, and to the rest of her family, Husband Bob and children for being his caring and loving extended Kelowna Family. To Chris’s mentors, coordinators and teachers at Okanagan College in Salmon Arm and Kelowna, especially his Kelowna welding instructor who attended and spoke kindly of Chris in his tribute and also to all his Kelowna College classmates who took “time off” to attend. The College in Kelowna flew their flag at half mast in Chris’s honor! We are overwhelmed by all the acts of love and kindness that were shown to our family. We are humbled

OBITUARY Terry Pocha (Teresa Ida Dick) March 10, 1957 - May 25, 2013 passed away peacefully with her family by her side, after a short, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Terry was born on March 10th, 1957 at St. Eugene hospital in Cranbrook, B.C. A loving wife, mother, Nana, sister, and friend too many. She was 56 years old when God needed another angel. How lucky we are to have you watching over us. Terry leaves behind her best friend and husband of 40 years, Bud (Roland) Pocha, her 3 children, Shaun Hunt (Shaune), Jeremy Pocha (Becky), and Kristin Luke (Mike). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Meghan, Caitlyn, Dom, Jagger, Berlynn, Evan, and Emma. She leaves behind her siblings Debbie Ozolins (Roland), Sherry Pointer, Susie Koran (Dean), and Michael McKinnon (Michelle), step-brother Larry McKinnon (Marilyn), and many friends and family. She adored her husband and cherished her children and grandchildren. Terry lit up a room with her laughter and great conversation. She enjoyed gardening and hosting gatherings at her home with her family. She was a natural at giving advice and even better at listening. Terry will be greatly missed, and never forgotten. Terry is predeceased by her mother Bernice McKinnon, father John Dick, and step-father Pete McKinnon. There will be a celebration of her life held at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook on Friday, May 31st, 2013 at 2:00pm. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. Don’t cry because it's over, smile because it happened... Dr.Suess
