Toddler battles own genes
Diagnosis of cystic fibrosis turns family’s life upside down ‘It’s basically beating him on the chest in different areas of his lungs.’
Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News
W
hen Leila Sturgeon received that phone call from the doctor’s office to come in, she went numb. She was asked to come in to discuss the results from a routine newborn screening test done on her then two-week-old baby, Ethan Ellwood. She hoped, perhaps irrationally, she later thought, the results from a simple pin prick on one of Ethan’s tiny feet would somehow pertain to her and not her seemingly healthy, newborn son. Unfortunately it was about Ethan. He was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), a common but fatal genetic disease that has no cure. “It was a total surprise,” Sturgeon said, describing the day she got the news from the doctor. “CF did cross my mind only because I looked it up and it’s one of the diseases they test from this heel prick. I had said something to my mother and she said, ‘don’t worry about it, it’s not in our family.’” Ethan’s dad, Keith Ellwood also didn’t think the gene was in his family either. “Absolute confusion,” Ellwood said, explaining his first reaction when Sturgeon called him after getting the news. “There was no history of cystic fibrosis in either of our families.” CF is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs but can also affect the pancreas, liver and intestine. CF sufferers are unable to digest and absorb nutrients from food and their lung fills up with thick mucous, making it difficult to breathe. For a child to be born with CF, both parents must be carriers of the gene. Carriers do not have CF but there is a 25 per cent chance that carrier couples will have a child with CF. Carriers also

have a 50 per cent chance of having a child that is a carrier and a 25 per cent chance that their child will be completely unaffected. Both Sturgeon and Ellwood looked within their families to see who may have had CF. Neither were able to pinpoint a person with certainty, but Ellwood may have come close to at least one. “I talked to my dad who is one of those family tree guys and I don’t remember which relative, but there was a great, great something,
two or three generations ago that died at an early age with pneumonia or something,” Ellwood explained. “It hadn’t been considered that it may have been cystic fibrosis until now.” “People died young back then,” Sturgeon added. The average life expectancy for a child born with CF in
Canada is now about 40 years, a huge jump from under five in the 1950s and 14 years in the 1980s. An estimated one in 3,600 children born in Canada has CF, making it the most common fatal genetic disease affecting children and young adults. The couple went to Victoria
General Hospital the next day to meet with various doctors and experts to discuss Ethan’s care. Ethan currently takes almost a dozen pills, which will increase to 60 as he gets older, at various times in a day to ward off infections and help him digest food. Ethan also goes through three sessions of physiotherapy that lasts at least 30 minutes but can last up to 90 minutes depending on how cooperative he is. The physiotherapy was tough to perform at first. “It’s basically beating him on the chest in different areas of his lungs,” Sturgeon said, adding she was in shock when she first saw the physiotherapist perform the therapy on her newborn son. “Keith had to do it first because I couldn’t and it was uncomfortable. Ethan hates it but unfortunately it has to be done.” The patting on different areas of the chest and then vibration is meant to loosen mucous buildup in the lungs and help Ethan cough up anything that may be in there. Eventually, Ethan will have to perform this physiotherapy on himself. Luckily for both parents and Ethan, Ethan has no problem sleeping and at least one physio session can be performed on him while he’s sleeping. Researchers identified the CF gene in 1989 and in January 2012 the U.S. Food and Drug administration approved the first drug that fixes a genetic mutation in some CF sufferers. Continued / A4

Derelict buildings must come down: council Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

Nurses rally for jobs
Nurses from all over Vancouver Island arrive at the Hospitality Inn on Wednesday to protest proposed measures that could see nursing jobs replaced by care aids. BC Nurses Union representative Art Moses said changes are planned for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, with plans for expansion. The nurses were in Port Alberni to attend the Vancouver Island Health Authority’s board meeting at the hotel.
Charges laid in Roger Creek sexual assault SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News
A 17-year-old male has been charged with attempted murder in the sexual assault of a 16-year-old female near Roger Creek Park in Port Alberni on May 21.
The male, who is from Port Alberni and cannot be named because he is a minor, is also facing charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon and choking. The 16-year-old girl is still in hospital
recovering from her injuries, Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. “There’s no indication that these individuals were in any kind of relationship,” she added. The female is a student at Alberni
District Secondary School. The male was arrested last Wednesday without incident. He has been remanded into custody where he will remain until his next court appearance on June 6, Allan said.
Port Alberni council unanimously rejected appeals to spare the demolition of two firedamaged buildings, including the former Tidebrook Motel. The Tidebrook Motel at 4356 Gertrude St., across from the Roger Creek water park, was destroyed by a fire on Jan. 13, 2012. A second fire on Nov. 3, 2012 caused extensive damage to a former restaurant on the same property. In February this year, a letter was sent to Alberta-based owner Jack Purdy to either bring the structure up to code or have it torn down by the end of March. In April, council rejected an extension request to the end of May. City councillor Cindy Solda vocally supported this and passing the bill to the owners of other derelict buildings. She is fed up with owners who don’t comply
with city bylaws. “Promises were made before but they are empty promises,” Solda said. “How are we going to encourage new development in the community when some people don’t take pride in it.” Solda said a number of local businesses and property owners have made efforts in fixing up their property over the years. Strictly enforcing bylaws on nuisance properties makes the community more liveable and encourages others to do the same. “It’s a domino effect,” Solda added. City manager Ken Watson estimated the demolition to be around $20,000 which will be billed to the property owner. If the property is sold, that bill would be transferred to the new owner. In a report presented to city council Monday, the building inspector called the remaining
charred structure of the Tidebrook a hazard, adding that it is dilapidated and offensive to the community. He noted that the roof, windows and doors were destroyed, extensive water and mould damage exists and the damage exceeds 75 per cent of its value. The property has also had a history of maintenance issues since 2008. The second property that will face the city’s wrecking ball is a house at 5165 Golden St. That house was severely damaged in a fire on Nov. 2, 2010. The owner is deceased and the acreage property has been put on and off the market by the estate’s executor, most recently for $145,000. The two property owners can appeal city council’s decision again, but Solda is confident that the structures on both properties will be demolished.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
This July, Alberni Valley residents will step into the future. The Port Alberni Multicultural Society is now accepting entries for the 2013 Canada Day Parade and according to parade coordinator Gillian Shearwater, the theme for both the parade and Canada Day events will be ‘Celebrating Our Future’. “We all remember last year looking back over 100 years of history, so this year we thought we’d look forward and imagine where we’ll be in the future,” said Shearwater. “We will all be a part of that future, building homes or clubs or businesses and we want to share everyone’s plans for the future.” The society started accepting entries in February and will continue to do so until the June 10 deadline, Shearweater said. First to enter this year’s parade, she noted, was the Cherry Creek Fire Department. She added that the society is currently in need of a recording secretary and an apprentice parade coordinator. The Port Alberni Canada Day Parade takes place July 1, starting at 10 a.m., with familyoriented activities taking place at Glenwood Centre throughout the day. Parade participants will be marshalled at 8:30 a.m. It is a non-competitive event and anywhere from 400-800 participants are expected. For more info parade or to request an entry form, please call 250724-7293 or e-mail CanadaDayParade@gmail. com.

Parents protest busing cuts CHRISTOPHER SUN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
An appeal to the Alberni Valley School District board to reconsider eliminating cross-boundary school bus service failed as the district struggles to balance its budget next year. The local school district, like others in the province, are dealing with a 68 per cent transportation funding cut made by the provincial government. A number of parents attended Tuesday’s school board meeting out of concern for the cuts, with one parent formally addressing the board. Alesia Servatius has two kids attending French Immersion at École Alberni Elementary.
Start to finish at
She lives in the Gill Elementary catchment, which does not have a French Immersion program, but the bus that would take her kids to Gill must go back to the bus depot, passing near École Alberni. “The bus travels along Gertrude to return to the bus depot so it’s a twoblock detour,” Servatius said. “It’s not going to cost them anymore money and the kids already have a spot on that same bus.” Servatius lives 17 km from École Alberni, which takes her 20 to 25 minutes to drive one way. If she drives her son and daughter to school in the fall, that would mean 68 km and two hours of driving five days a week. She suggested the school board charge families
‘I am really hoping they will look at a user pay system.’
– Alesia Servatius choosing to send their kids cross-boundary which could even generate money for the cashstrapped school district. “I am really hoping they will look at a user pay system,” Servatius added. School district chair Larry Ransom said the board does not want to create a two-tier system as there are parents who can’t afford to pay for cross-boundary school bus service. “We are leery about charging because the
impression of singling out people [who can’t afford it] appears like discrimination,” Ransom told Servatius, adding that the board will revisit the issue in the fall. “I can’t make any promises, but don’t give up.” SD70 operations manager Greg Roe told the board that he would look at the busing issue four to six weeks after the school commences again in the fall. The district has combined bus routes, eliminating three runs. “Clearly a reduction is not something anyone wants to go through, but we had no choice,” Roe told the board. “There may be some adjustments in the fall.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com
Port Alberni RCMP will not hold a youth camp this year but plans are in the works for a bigger one with Oceanside and possibly Nanaimo joining next year. “We heard loud and clear from the Oceanside detachment that they wanted to develop a similar model we had,” said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jen Allan, explaining Oceanside decided to join during a meeting last week. “Nanaimo has been invited to the process with an option to include them as well.” The camp is open to students in Grades 10 to 12 who are interested in a career in law enforcement, such as the RCMP, conservation, fisheries or positions in the justice system. The plan is to hold this camp, which Allan said is modelled on what the RCMP academy depot would teach new recruits, every two years. Last year, 12 students were accepted to the camp and they were taught things like tactical positioning when talking to a person who may be highly violent. “It was our first one and we wanted to keep this pilot one small and a little more manageable and give an opportunity to work with the kids directly,” Allan said, explaining places like Prince George and Courtenay will see about 50 kids at their camps. “We are planning to have an even bigger and better one to offer to the community of Port Alberni.” Allan added the RCMP often see new recruits list attending one of these camps in their application to become officers.

TimberWest starts logging near Bainbridge Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News
TimberWest has started logging 18 hectares of forest near the Bainbridge Lake watershed. TimberWest vicepresident Domenico Iannidinardo said the logging is being done two kilometres away from one
of the water intakes, and assured Port Alberni city council that precautions have been made to protect this important source of drinking water. “We have no immediate plan to do harvesting nearer [to the lake],” Iannidinardo said, adding that TimberWest will be closely monitoring water
quality. “There will be about 200 truckloads of logs over two to three months,” he later said. Iannidinardo explained that a gravel road has been built to the site and showed pictures of the road and an outhouse within the vicinity of where the work is being
done. He said the logged area will barely be visible from town and showed views of what the affected area would look like from different vantage points such as 10th and Argyle and Harbour Quay. His presentation showed it being a barely noticeable blip on the
in the area compared to Island Timberlands, another company, and that harvesting in the watershed is nothing new. He stressed to council that local companies are being contracted to harvest the trees and that on average, 10 truckloads of logs are harvested by TimberWest each week.

The Hawaii Mars waterbomber makes a low pass near the Holland America cruise ship Amsterdam in Alberni Inlet last week. The bomber did a fire suppression demonstration before the cruise ship departed.
Latest cruise ship visit on video A film showcasing last week’s cruise ship visit by Holland America’s Amsterdam has been put online and a second one is being produced to convince the cruise ship company to add Port Alberni as regular stop. And all of it is being done for free by a local filmmaker who is passionate about promoting his town. “I’m a Port Alberni booster,”
said John Kenchenten, owner of Eco Digital Video Institute, joking that he’s also a taxpayer and wants to see his taxes go down. “[City economic development manager] Pat Deakin called me a day or two before and asked me if I was doing anything.” Kenchenten had some free time so he spent the day videotaping much of the happenings during the cruise
ship visit. He then quickly put together a four-minute video which was shown to city council Monday night. The video can be seen on youtube. com and is titled, Cruise Ship Amsterdam visits Port Alberni. Kenchenten said the second video will be five minutes and will include other things such as the mill and the yarding of logs.
Coroner’s office seeks second rep for Alberni Valley and region Port Alberni has a coroner vacancy to fill. The B.C. Coroners office is looking to fill one of two, on-call community coroner positions due to a recent departure. The office is looking for a wide range of applicants to choose from. “A posting in the Lower Mainland would get 100 to 200 applications,” said Vancouver Island regional coroner Matt Brown. “In rural areas we don’t have as
forest covered hillside. Iannidinardo said this is the right time to do the job because the streams are dry and it is right before fire season. TimberWest manages 6,000 hectares of forest in the Alberni Valley. Iannidinardo later said his company has a relatively small ownership
many but we want to get the word out.” “The role of a community coroner seeks a person with a particular background and interest.” In the job posting advertised on the B.C. government’s website, the position pays $25/ hr and requires a degree or diploma in a health, legal or social sciences field and five years’ experience in a related field. Experience in conducting investigative
inquiries, possession of sound judgment, excellent communications skills and 24/7 availability when on-call is also required. The position requires attendance at scenes of death, gathering information, liaising with police and other emergency responders and dealing with families. A Port Alberni active transportation plan for walkers, joggers and cyclists is in the planning stage but a number of city councillors voiced concern that this may be a waste of $20,000. Coun. Jack McLeman said he has seen similar studies done before and wondered why it’s being done again. He also had issue with hiring outsiders to tell the city what it needs. “I always get a problem when someone we get from out of town gets here, who doesn’t know Port Alberni and tells us what we need and leaves Port Alberni with a cheque in his pocket,” McLeman said to council Monday. “There have been five of those studies, two of them I was involved with.”
McLeman explained he remembered two similar studies that took place in the 1990s and that the regional district is currently working on one as well, adding that it should be tied in with the city’s. City engineer Guy Cicon said the only plan he was aware of was from 1984 and was conducted by parks and recreation. Cicon defended this new study by saying this one is allencompassing as a previous one focused only on cycling. “This is not a duplicate study,” Cicon said. “When we get the study back, it will be brought back to council for implementation.” Coun. Rob Cole
said he’d rather see the $20,000 spent on building bridges across Roger Creek. “We’ve got to focus on what we can get done,” Cole said. “I would like to see more focus on that than the street ways.” Mayor John Douglas later reminded council that they previously approved a $70,000 budget for an active cycling plan and that the $20,000 for this all-inclusive study is coming out of that budget. According to a letter from Cicon to city manager Ken Watson, Urban Systems was hired as a consultant and this plan is part of the city’s strategic plan to “ensure a high quality of life through the promotion of active living.”

Inbrief Opportunity awaits in China city newsline
Garbage truck limps into 2014 Port Alberni city council is delaying the purchase of a new garbage truck because the lowest bid received was $30,000 over budget, but raised questions as to whether the city should get out of the commercial garbage pick-up business. The packer body of the current eight-year old garbage truck is wearing out and the engine and transmission is beginning to cause problems, said city engineer Guy Cicon. The budget to replace this truck is $230,000 but the lowest bid received was for $260,052.80 plus tax. Cicon will look again at replacing the truck next year. Coun. Cindy Solda reminded council that this option was discussed before but local businesses complained and were willing to pay more to continue having a cityrun garbage collection. Cicon said commercial garbage collection is currently revenue neutral.

It was a whirlwind trip for Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas who spent five days in China earlier this month. Douglas was invited by the Alberni Valley school district to promote the Valley as an ideal place for young students to learn English and complete their schooling. The mayor said his visit went well and he expects more international students coming through School District 70’s doors. “I met with seven students who will be coming in August,” Douglas said. “I anticipate higher numbers, 20 to 30 in the following year. Port Alberni city council has approved the purchase of a medium sized excavator for about $180,000, a downsize from the current one. In his report, city engineer Guy Cicon said the current seven-year old excavator is currently worth about $90,000 and is too large for some of the city’s sewer and water projects.
By adjusting you, Chiropractors help keep your spine supple. That assists your nervous system to run more healthfully which helps you age gracefully. Here’s what else you can do to enhance your longevity. Exercise aerobically for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week. Enjoy plenty of fruits and vegetables, good quality proteins and healthy fats, organic whenever possible. Try to shop on the outside aisles of your grocery store. Minimize fast foods. Real food equals real health. Make yourself be silent periodically. No TV, radio or internet, just quiet moments by yourself. Then ask yourself if you like the company you keep at that time. Play or listen to the music you love. Get enough sleep. Consider napping. Learn to love your job or move on. Get optimistic about your future. Then follow your heart. Make and keep close friends. Learn how to express your feelings. Clear your past. Repair any relationships in your family or with old friends. Accept any responsibility for any role, no matter how small, that you played and then forgivingly approach that person. Work at your marriage. Chances are the grass isn’t any greener on the other side. Get your finances under control. Spending more and going into debt won’t help fill any emptiness inside of you. Diminish any unnecessary worry. Live in the present, not the past (guilt) or future (fear). Stop if you find yourself criticizing yourself or others. Live a life of inspiration, not desperation. Consciously choose a kind, friendly, forgiving and relaxed approach to life. Take care of the earth, go green, and recycle. Encourage a sense of spirituality. Consider that there may be a design even if you balk at the concept of a designer. Create the possibility that you are an essential part of an interconnected and interrelated web of life. It will make it easier to live in peace and to promote a true and contagious desire to contribute back to mankind. Shy of picking your grandparents, there’s a lot that you can do today to live a clearer and more meaningful life. Adding Chiropractic can help you age gracefully, adding life to years and years to life. Live well.
Bridge over troubled water
The City of Port Alberni has saved some large metal bridge sections from the scrap heap and hope to use them for future crossings over Roger Creek and possibly the old plywood site pier. The sections are worth $800,000 but the city is paying $35,000 for them. These sections are being purchased from Alberni Engineering and are surplus fish pen bridge sections. They measure 28 metres in length and are three metres wide.
ranged in population from one million to 14 million. Douglas
also met with various politicians. “The mayor of Huangshi said I was the first mayor from Canada to come visit,” Douglas said, adding that these meetings also allowed him to discuss potential economic partnerships. Douglas also had an unexpected meeting with officials at the B.C. Trades and Investment office in Beijing, which he believes will lead to something bigger for the community.
“It was the most important meeting to us economically,” Douglas explained. “I had an hour meeting with the regional manager and a couple of others and I invited them to come visit Port Alberni the next time they are in B.C.” The trade office is mandated by the provincial government to help bring investment to B.C. One representative will be making a visit in June and the head of the Beijing office is expected to visit later this year. Douglas said economic development manager Pat Deakin has since had a 90-minute conversation with the Beijing trade and investment office about Port Alberni’s desire to become B.C.’s third port and to become an LNG facility.

EDITORIAL
Senate scandal a Harper fail BCTF digs in for endless contract war The pace of government action (or in this case, inaction) is something Canadians will never fully be able to grasp. In the blink of an eye, the Conservative government can strip away the retirement dreams of millions of Canadians. But when a loyal soldier of the government stands accused of bilking taxpayers with improper expenses, the prime minister claims to be powerless, while money quietly funneled out ‘But this time, is of his office to repay the Canadians alleged wrongdoing. But, this time, may finally Canadians may finally have had have had enough. The cloud of scandal enough.’ continues to grow over the head of embattled Senator Mike Duffy. The former TV journalist is accused of fudging his expense account, eventually repaying the improperly claimed expenses with $90,000 he received from Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s chief of staff who has since resigned. Duffy has now quit the Conservative caucus in the Senate, but he is so far rejecting calls to resign as a senator. And the prime minister seems unwilling to push him out the door. Harper said he was “not happy” and “very upset” with the conduct of some parliamentarians and his own office, before hopping on a plane for a South American trade mission without answering questions. Canada’s 105 senators all make a basic salary of $135,200. Most Canadians would be hard pressed to name a single duty that senators fulfill. Maybe Mike Duffy has done a service to his country after all. Maybe the senator’s actions will be the straw that broke the camel’s back and prompt Canadians to demand an end to the political embarrassment that is this nation’s Senate. — Penticton Western News

ICTORIA – Like those Japanese soldiers who didn’t hear about the end of the Second World War, the militant fringe that controls the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is digging in for endless battle against the B.C. government. Their nemesis, Premier Christy Clark, reiterated last week that seeking a 10-year agreement with the BCTF is a top priority when the legislature is recalled this summer. The current one-year truce ends June 30. The BCTF grudgingly agreed to that extension last year, then ran TV ads calling for an NDP government that promised concessions and union bosses on both sides of the negotiating table. “You know, I may be a lame duck,” outgoing BCTF president Susan Lambert crowed to cheering classroom-
warfare radicals at the union’s convention in March, “but I think Christy’s goose is cooked.” We’ll never know how much this sort of gloating contributed to the epic collapse of the NDP, champion of public sector union members whose pay and benefits make them the new upper class. But I can tell you the prospects for sparing children from this ideological warfare are not good. Last week the B.C. Court of Appeal handed down an ivory-tower decision that upheld the “right” of teachers to bring their union demands into the classroom in the form of posters, buttons and black armbands that to some self-absorbed teachers symbolize the “death” of education. During the election campaign, The Globe and Mail carried a story
on one of those mock elections held in schools around the province. An elementary-level student was quoted as saying she voted against the B.C. Liberals because Clark “caused a teachers’ strike.” If this kid was talking about the most recent strike, I wonder where she got that idea. In a negotiating performance that was appalling even by BCTF standards, Lambert and her team conducted months of disruptive work-to-rule action before they could even articulate a wage and benefit demand. When they finally did, it was outrageously out of touch with reality. An indication of how the union’s ruling class wants to conduct itself in the classroom can be found in the latest issue of the BCTF newsletter to its members.
‘Prospects for sparing children from this ideological warfare are not good.’

Joanna Larson, president of the Prince Rupert union local, contributes an article headlined: “What kind of citizen do we hope to graduate from our K-12 public schools?” Larson first quotes the education ministry’s current goals. They include preparing citizens who are “creative, flexible, self-motivated, and who have a positive self-image.” Another goal is citizens who are “skilled and who can contribute to society generally, including the world of work.” Larson then mocks these goals, as follows: “Essentially, the Ministry of Education has a vision of citizens who will maintain the status quo, not rock the boat, and participate on a superficial level in aspects of political and societal change. “It doesn’t challenge individuals to take direct action against exploitation, marginalization and violence.” Continued / A11

To the Editor, I was on Holland America Amsterdam (cruise ship). Had a wonderful day in your very friendly city. Appreciated the flyby from the water bomber—it was spectacular. This was our second trip to your city via cruise ship and hope you get more visits after all the expense with the lovely new dock you made to accommodate the tenders. Thanks again. Carol Snoeck, via e-mail
Cruise stop well organized To the Editor, My mother and I were two of the passengers aboard the cruise ship Amsterdam when it stopped at Port Alberni on May 22. I wanted to comment on how well organized the transportation was from the pier to the shopping area of Port Alberni for passengers such as my mother, who has limited mobility. I also wanted to say how welcoming and gracious the local artisans and store owners were. Lastly
thanks very much for arranging for the Hawaii Mars water bomber display near the end of the ship’s visit; very enjoyable. You live in a beautiful part of the province and the pride in your community shows. Thanks for a great day. Marguerite Murray, New Westminster
Volunteers can be proud To the Editor, The people of Alberni Valley have always had a great willingness to help out, especially when others have been thrust into stressful situations of grief from loss of life or property. Volunteering of time and resources has been the real community glue for the people of Port Alberni. All communities have many service groups that otherwise would not be able to serve, if it were not for the volunteers who do the work for the organization. Fundraising, festivals or sporting events— the list is long where volunteers are critical for the community to carry on such events. Many must come forward or some activities would be
too costly to operate. People need only to have a willingness to learn what to do effectively to help out. Wonderful, capable leaders come forth to lead the volunteers. They are themselves volunteers who feel capable of organizing so things run smoothly. Volunteers usually find the time requirements a little greater than they imagined. For most this is not a big problem because most serve on many short duration volunteer projects during a year. Elders, the retirees and those who are a bit younger find time to help out. The problem arises when the volunteer begins to feel a burnout in their serving efforts. Declining ability from age, interest, frustration or boredom from the familiar are hazards of volunteering. Some programs need to cease for a while until the interest can be rekindled. This should not frustrate a community even if some major event needs to go into a stasis period. Everyone has enjoyed and benefited from events operated by volunteers. So
please do volunteer into programs that interest you. Enjoy and have fun and camaraderie with those groups because your talent, time and energy are graciously needed. Bruce Hornidge, Port Alberni
That’s sweet smell of karma To the Editor, Our English language evolved mainly from British dialects, along with many words derived from Latin and Greek, and a multitude of words borrowed, and sometimes “Anglicized”, from other languages around the world. One such word that is commonly used in political context these days is schadenfreude, which is German for “satisfaction felt at someone else’s misfortune”. There’s no better way to express what I think about Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s present predicament. Some 25 years ago as a top lieutenant in Preston Manning’s Reform Party, Mr. Harper was very vocal on how Ottawa needed to be changed, and how it should start with a Triple E Senate (equal, elected
and effective). Large parts of Alberta’s populace became very supportive; although the political leaders in the fledgling party, and many in the media, failed to point out to the gullible voters that they would need support from many more provinces to change how the Senate is constituted. Fast forward from the early days of the Reform Party to present-day Ottawa. Two of the PM’s handpicked senators have quit their caucus following questions about home-province residency, and fraudulent expense claims. The scandal has its genesis in the PM choosing two high-profile media mavens to fill Senate seats. I concede that the PM is a very clever politician, but at the same time I have never had much respect for him. So when he gets dragged deep in the doo-doo over a Senate scandal largely of his own making, I have to say: “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy”. The sweet aroma of schadenfreude is filling my nostrils right now. Bernie Smith, Parksville

The gun sounds and the racers at the Special Olympics are off sprinting down the lanes. About a third of the way around the race, once runner falls. The crowd gasps. With utter spontaneity the rest of the runners stop in their tracks. They look at the who has fallen. Then, one by one, they turn around and slowly make their way back to help the fallen runner to his feet. The race continues, with all of them running arm in arm to the finish line. They finish the race together. They recognize their interconnectness. Together they make their way forward. We all fall. We all suffer. And we are called by the Spirit to move beyond our suffering and join hands and help each other to finish.

Coffee With...
New man at museum has familiar face WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON
Coffee With Jamie Morton has come full circle by returning to Port Alberni to become the new director of the Alberni Valley Museum. Morton has been on the job for just under a month and on Monday was working in pre-digital era conditions. “Our computers are down and might stay that way for the rest of the week,” he said. “I’m using the opportunity to catch up on some paperwork.” Morton came back to Port Alberni from Manitoba, where he worked as the Hudson’s Bay collections curator. “I was actually looking for a summer job for our son when I came across the job
posting for Alberni,” Morton said. He went through the interview process and Bob’s your uncle, he was hired. The job represents a return to Port Alberni for Morton, and moreover a return to the Alberni Valley Museum. He was previously an instructor at North Island College in Port Alberni, and a member of the heritage commission, which brought him into contact with the museum. “Port Alberni has one of the finest small town museums in the province,” Morton said. “Most other places don’t have such an extensive industrial collection for instance.” Although Morton hasn’t been here long he’d like to see a more solid bridge between the community and museum. “I’d like to see
it become more relevant to the larger community. I don’t think enough people know about what a museum is and what it does, and that’s an Island trend.” Born and raised in Vancouver, Morton was first exposed to a museum when he visited the former Vancouver City Museum, which is now the Carnegie Community Centre. “There were these jars of formaldehyde with fish in them, and I remember seeing the mummy exhibit,” he said. Morton attended Cresecent Heights Elementary then White Rock Vancouver College, where he graduated in 1969. He wanted to be an archeologist since he was 11. He went to Simon Fraser University, where he earned a BA in archeology.

‘We’d be in period dress and use a lot of traditional crafts...I learned how to make a watertight wooden barrel then.’
Morton’s first job in a museum-type setting was at the Fort Langley National Historic Site, where he worked for four years. “We’d be in period dress and use a lot of traditional crafts, it was fun,” he said. “I learned how to make a water-tight wooden barrel then.” Morton’s work with museums over the next two decades took him from Calgary to Portland, Oregon. In 2000, Morton moved to Port Alberni, where he worked as a history and sociology instructor at North Island College. He left for Manitoba in 2011. The married father of two recently read two books: a detective novel and Sawlogs on Steel Rails by George McKnight. It’s a book produced in 1995 by the Port Alberni Seniors’ History Committee about the 45 years of railway operations in logging camps around Port Alberni. BC Children’s Hospital helps kids get care closer to home Jonathan Dean recently took up horseback riding and, while climbing onto the back of a huge and powerful animal might intimidate some small children, the five-year-old Nanaimo boy took it in stride. Horseback riding just happens to be his latest achievement and his mother, Grace Dean, credits Errington Therapeutic Riding Association’s riding therapy, which requires balance and core strength, with helping Jonathan learn to walk. Jonathan has a genetic condition called CHARGE syndrome and is deaf and blind and requires specialized care in speech therapy, audiology, respirology and ophthalmology. This means he’s had to overcome a many challenges since birth. Fortunately, one challenge – the frequent and inconvenient trips his family had to make to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver – was removed with the opening of a pediatric clinic at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in 2009. Although Jonathan still goes to BC Children’s a least once a year for checkups, most of his care is now managed by caregivers at the Nanaimo facility. “Being able to go to Nanaimo has made such a difference,” says Grace Dean, Jonathan’s mother. “It’s helped our home life. I don’t have to take a full day or two from work. I can’t even put into words how much it’s helped us.” Construction of the pediatric clinic in Nanaimo was supported by Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital. Among the goals of Child Health BC are improved access to BC Children’s specialists, reduced travel for children requiring treatment, standardized care for children throughout BC, and improved pediatric services in the various regions of the province. “The fact that Jonathan is able to receive specialized care so close to home is exactly what we’re looking for,” says Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive director of Child Health BC. Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respectively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Pediatric clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo and Prince George have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participated in Child Health BC’s workshops. O’Donnell credits Overwaitea Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s growing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a presence in so many BC communities. Overwaitea Food Group President Darrell Jones agrees. “We’re committed to the health and wellness of kids and families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and
with the help of our communities, we’ve contributed millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects, advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played a key role in making this fundraising success possible.” Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC. Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier
for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children. Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support research, equipment purchases and training. On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs. Grace Dean understands the importance of supporting the hospital: “Jonathan has received great care at BC Children’s and at the clinic in Nanaimo. As far as I’m concerned, the fact that my son, despite all his challenges, is walking on his own, is learning to communicate with me, and is even riding horses, shows just how much children can accomplish when they get the right care. BC Children’s Hospital has been there for us every step of the way.”
Between April 2009 and March 2011, approximately 1,200 families made over 3,200 visits to the Nanaimo Pediatric Ambulatory Health Clinic.
JUNE 1 & 2, 2013 On June 1 and 2, tune in to Miracle Weekend, broadcast live from BC Children’s Hospital, on Global BC from 7:00pm on Saturday, June 1 until 5:30pm on Sunday, June 2 The 26th annual BC Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Weekend is a two-day celebration that showcases the best of BC Children’s Hospital: patients, their families, caregivers and supporters who come from every corner of BC. BC Children’s Hospital receives over 200,000 visits from patients from across the province every year. Donations help the hospital deliver the best in care every day, and are helping to prepare for the future by supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and better access to care for children in or close to their home communities. Please support BC Children’s Hospital.

At the Overwaitea Food Group, we’re very proud of our longstanding commitment to investing in the health of kids and their families. We’re grateful to everyone who supports us in this effort. Our team members, customers and suppliers have all played a key role in our fundraising success over the years. We’ve been supporting BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades, and we’ve raised millions of dollars in support of capital improvement projects, important research initiatives and advocacy programs designed to help keep our kids safe by reducing preventable injuries. In 2007, we made a $20 million pledge to support Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital that helps get kids in BC get the care they need, closer to home. Since then, we’ve raised more than $10.7 million toward our goal, and Child Health BC has been able to put this concept into action in a number of communities throughout BC. We are grateful for the amazing commitment and fund raising efforts driven by OFG team members who encourage the generosity of our customers and suppliers.

Valley SENIORS
Driving enthusiasm at home A
n important date to celebrate this month (besides Seniors Week) is the second annual “Abbeyfield Week”, which will be held June 8–15 in homes worldwide. In fact, there are more than 800 Abbeyfield homes and more than 9,000 residents in 17 countries. The Abbeyfield movement began in 1956 when Major Richard Carr-Gomm resigned his commission with the British Army and bought a property at 50 Eugene Rd., South London for 250 pounds. It was to provide housing for four people—the only qualification being loneliness. In 1987, Canada opened its first Abbeyfield house in Sidney, B.C. Today, there are 30 Abbeyfield houses in Canada. And here in our community, the late Terry Whyte made possible the opening of the Port Alberni home. Now, under
‘I have had no regrets because this place satisfies my needs...’
– Muriel Thompson the leadership of Marlene Dietrich and an active board of directors, our local Abbeyfield provides accommodation to 21 residents. One of those residents is Muriel Thompson, who is now the longest living resident of Abbeyfield. She has lived in this home for the past six and a half years. Mrs. Thompson, originally from Ontario, lived in California for several years with her husband, who passed away in 1985. In 2003, Mrs. Thompson decided to move to Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island to live with her daughter, and

shortly after, to Port Alberni, where her second daughter lives. “I decided to come here to be closer to my other daughter and to Abbeyfield because I felt lonely and
depressed,” she says. “I have had no regrets, because this place satisfies my needs and allows me to have friends, be independent, keep busy, have my daughter coming to visit me regularly, and I have a large room with my own furniture. “In other words, for me, it is a perfect place!”. All these years since she first arrived, Mrs. Thompson has been actively involved in the life of Abbeyfield, not only socializing regularly with her peers but assisting others. She also oversaw the “Abbeyfield Convenience Store” when it was first opened. And when the home’s first bus arrived, called at that time “the pride of Abbeyfield”, it was Muriel who was asked to do the christening of the vehicle, mainly for her enthusiastic endorsement of this means of transportation at Abbeyfield.

Echo Village turns 21 1992 when the doors of this multilevel care home opened its doors to welcome the first residents. Congratulations, Echo Village!

Saluting seniors occasion for all of us to appreciate and celebrate the men and women who have laid the foundations of our society. In Port Alberni there are hundreds of individuals who live in seniors’ homes assisted by dedicated staff members and hundreds of volunteers and families. As “Seniors Week” approaches, we want to salute all of them, for bringing fulfillment to all.
Following the tradition of several decades, the members of Port Alberni City Council passed a motion last March to proclaim “Seniors Week” in Port Alberni June 2–8, 2013. This proclamation reflects the sentiment of the community, which aims to pay tribute to the seniors of the Valley who have made valuable contributions to their community and province. This is an

Bradley Robert Mitchell March 17, 1984 ~ May 29, 2011 We thought of you today, But that was nothing new. We thought of you yesterday, And will tomorrow too. We think of you in silence, and make no outward show. For what it meant to lose you, Only those who love you know. Remembering you is easy, We do it every day. It’s the heartache of losing you, That never goes away. Love you always, Dad, Mom, Jen, Trena & Brody DEATHS
DEATHS
DONALD ALFRED HOULE August 4, 1923 – March 26, 2013 Don passed away at the West Coast General Hospital after a heart attack. He is predeceased by his wife Kay Houle. He is sadly missed by son Kevin and daughters Shelley (Mike) Bircsak, Kathy (Bruce) Kingsley and 3 grandchildren, Gregory, Andrea and Warren and his little dog ‘Pepper’. A celebration of life will be on June 6th at 1:00 PM at the Notre Dame Church 4731 Burke Street Port Alberni B.C. In lieu of owers donations can be made to the SPCA or a charity of your choice. “A limb has fallen from the family tree. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song The good life lived when I was strong. Now my mind is at ease and my soul is at rest Remembering now I truly was blessedâ€?
Dear Rhonda, Like a beam of light into a dark room, like a rose to a stranger. You appeared into my life twenty years ago when I asked you to grad and you changed my life, forever, by saying yes. With my cleft palate, acne and general lack of any confidence, you, over the years, have changed my self image. The most beautiful woman I have ever known, loved me; not a little but passionately. You loved me though my scars, acne and lack of direction. You are a gift from God who has made me the man I am today. From this day forward I will know you longer than I have not. I was alive 20 years before and now I have loved you for 20 years and one day. You have brought such joy into my life that I want to shout it from the rooftops. But I thought this classified ad would be a little more appropriate. As we move together through life, I want you to know that I am here and I love you as much as a man can love a woman. In celebration of this thought there is a coupon signed your loving husband in the paper for you. You make me want to be a better man and I Love You. Thank you for being a part of my life for 20 years.

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Carpet bowling is popular at Echo Centre, but can always use more members. It’s essentially lawn bowling without the grass stains.
Seniors’ week is June 2–8 in the Alberni Valley and the days will be filled with activities for people aged 50 and above. Parks and Recreation have a whole schedule of events laid out at various places throughout the Valley. See our special supplement included with today’s Alberni Valley News. For the first time ever, seniors can participate in a mobility scooter
rodeo, to learn safe ways to drive around the community. There are trips planned to the West Coast aboard the Frances Barkley, and to McLean Mill on the steam train. Want to get on the water? Try dragon boating, outrigger canoe paddling or even adult swimming. And many businesses are opening their doors to seniors with special attention too.

Wrestlers prepare for Canada Games Alberni Wrestling has three athletes who have been preparing for the Canada Games trials this coming weekend at Burnaby Central High School. Michel Kurucz, Nolan Badovinac and
Jonathan Spencer have been training with coach Travis Cross. Unfortunately, Kurucz has suffered an injury and will be unable to compete, coach James
Messenger said. If Badovinac or Spencer win at the trials they will represent British Columbia at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, QC in August.

Kelly Gauthier was the big winner in the B-Division of the nine-hole ladies at Alberni Golf Club this week, winning low gross, low net and low putts. She also had a birdie on No. 2. Also in the B-Division, pars were had by Kathy Toms on No. 8, Jan Charlesworth on No. 2 and No. 4. Lorraine Wilson had a par on No. 8. Julie Swaney had two chip-ins today, one on No. 6 and another on No. 7. In the A-Division, low gross went to Marta Williamson. Low net was won by Julie Swaney, who also had the low putts. 18-hole ladies Low gross went
to Jackie Little with a 74. Low net was shared between Patsy Gauthier and Kathy White each with 74. Gayle Rhodes had the challenge pin, Pat Nicklin challenged her, but Rhodes held onto the pin. Marie Randall will give it a try next week. The Zone 6 Amateur/Senior tournament was held in Comox at Glacier Greens Golf Club on May 25–26. Port Alberni golfers Christina Proteau won first place and Jackie Little won second. In the senior level Little took first place. Proteau and Little will play in the provincials in June. Good luck,
ladies. Janice Cross won first low net in her age category at the Zone 6 tourney. Teresa Cutting won third low net in her age category. Cross and Pat Nicklin will be representing the Alberni Golf Club on June 3 at Glacier Greens’ Champion of Champions Tournament for winning low gross and low net in the club championship tournament we had last August. Good luck, ladies. Never let up. The more you can win by, the more doubts you put in the other players’ minds the next time out. —Sam Snead

an Howie has been carving for two decades—first with wood, now with rainforest marble. Although he has lived and worked in the Alberni Valley for the past five years this is the first year he has had the opportunity to join the Days With the Arts studio tour. Howie’s Beaver Creek gallery space, located upstairs from his workshop, will be open as part of the two-day tour. Howie and his wife, Ellen Vander Putten, relocated to Port Alberni from Nanaimo. He admits housing prices were an attractive enticement; as was the detached workshop. Vander Putten teaches classical piano at the United Church, where she is also the
church pianist. Howie carves primarily in rainforest marble, which he quarries himself from an undisclosed location near Kennedy Lake. He likes the characteristics of the stone, which is local. “Vancouver Island has a tremendous amount of marble,” says Howie. “Rainforest is generally accepted as being from one location. It’s rare and famous because of that location.” Howie has worked as a small passenger ferry captain in Nanaimo and as a bridge saw operator at a granite fabrication company. He hopes to turn his sculpting into a full-time job “soon”. editor@albernivalleynews.com
