Seasonal delays: Construction on 53rd Avenue on the south side of the Rimbey Aquatic Centre will continue until mid to late June. Construction in Rimbey, as in other municipalities, is now in full swing. Repairs on the road will alleviate a problem with potholes, although motorists will be inconvenienced for a few more weeks. It’s business as usual at the aquatic centre, despite the road closure. Treena Mielke Photo

By Treena Mielke A second rezoning application by Keith and Glenna Spelrem has been denied, even though the couple promised to fork over a healthy chunk of change collected from the now defunct tax incentive rebate program. The Spelrems, who own property on the corner of 45 Avenue and 51 Street, across from the Outreach School applied to have their property rezoned to residential from commercial. However, council voted unanimously against the application following a public hearing May 27. The Spelrems originally applied to rezone the property in 2005 but were verbally notified their application was denied due to a shortage of commercial lots in Rimbey. However, the couple was hoping the development of more commercial lots might further their cause. “There has been additional C2 (commercial) property development on the perimeter of town, with high vehicle traffic volume and migration of existing businesses to this new commercial area. We see this recent development as addressing the reason given for the decline of our previous application,” Spelrem told council. In their application, the Spelrems noted commercial zoning in a residential area is detrimental to the lifestyle of families in the neighborhood. “The taxpaying residents we have spoken to in this area are concerned about this property remaining commercial,” said the Spelrems in a letter to council. “Permitted commercial uses in their neighborhood, affecting their quality of life and that of their children, is a serious concern.” Despite the Spelrems’ arguments in favor of rezoning, Ryan Andres, municipal planner with West Central Planning Agency, said the property abuts commercial and industrial development, making in an ideal location for a commercial use. “Although the parcel is not being used for a commercial use at this time, rezoning it to residential will preclude any future commercial activity from happening. Rezoning the district to (R2 (residential) is also in direct contravention with the town’s municipal development plan.” Of the nine written submissions regarding the rezoning, six were opposed and three were in support.

Awareness of elder abuse important step in prevention By Treena Mielke The physical abuse of a slap, kick or punch is serious, but emotional and financial abuse must not be overlooked, and are two of the most common forms of elder abuse. According to a 1999 General Social Survey by Statistics Canada, elder emotional and financial abuse rate even higher than physical abuse. Pauline Hansen, elder abuse awareness co-ordinator, was at the Rimbey Farmers’ Market to hand out information regarding the issue. She said awareness is an important first step. “It’s a real tough subject, but people need to be aware. You can’t educate people when they have blinders over their eyes.” Hansen said the Elder Abuse Awareness Program, made possible through federal funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program, has been set up to increase awareness. With funding through the New Horizons program and casino funding, The Alberta Council on Aging, a 45-year-old provincewide organization, developed the publications including A Seniors’ Guide to Fraud Prevention, Helping Hands Resource Book, and a multicultural sensitivity guide. These books were handed out at the farmers’ market and are available at no

cost through Rimbey FCSS. Bev Hanes, treasurer for Central Alberta Council on Aging, said elder abuse affects every part of society and seniors who are being abused need to step forward and seek help so as to stop the cycle. “The more it’s reported, the more people will be aware of it, and it will make a healthier community, she said. “Our society’s system of cultural values can only be a healthy system if we value our seniors,” she said. “As a caring community it is everyone’s obligation to become aware of any elder abuse and take steps to prevent or stop the abuse.” The mission of the Alberta Council on Aging is to empower and educate seniors and government to support a good quality of life for seniors and to encourage their full participation in all aspects of society. Seniors who are in an emergency abusive situation need to call the RCMP at 911. They can also call the violence information line at 403-310-1818 or the Elder Abuse Resource and Support for Seniors line at 403-343-6074. Information is also available at www.hrsdc.gc.ca/seniors Information in Helping Hands: A service provider’s resource manual for elder abuse in Alberta, states it is estimated that approximately one in every ten seniors has experienced some form of abuse.

MP speaks out against elder abuse By Treena Mielke

designed to help seniors recognize the signs and symptoms of elder abuse and provide information on available supports. The New Horizons for Seniors Program, which includes elder abuse awareness programs, helps organizations develop national or regional education and awareness activities to reduce the incidence of abuse of seniors. “Our elders are the ones who have made our country the best place on earth to live. They were the ones that paved the path to prosperity for myself and my family. It is only right that we, as a government, do what we can to ensure they live with dignity and respect, and when faced with indents where the are victimized, justice is swift and severe.”

Elder abuse is a growing problem society needs to recognize and act upon. Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins, who spoke at the Rimbey Farmers’ Market May 25, said elder abuse is a serious issue and ensuring the rights, safety and dignity of seniors is upheld should be a priority for everyone. “At a very young age I was taught to have respect for my elders and respect for the contributions and sacrifices they have put forth so that so many of us can enjoy the freedoms we have today. Growing older should not strip the dignity and integrity from anyone. As we grow older in this new world there are challenges for everyone to face.” Calkins noted that under the Protecting Seniors Act, evidence that an ofat the Rimbey Rodeo July 13 & 14, 2013 fence had a significant impact on the victims due Anyone interested in to their age and other personal circumstances, such sponsoring a tarp this year, as health or financial situplease contact ation, will now be considered as an aggravating factor for sentencing purposes. Across the swollen and muddy waters of the Red Deer River, tons of people milled around, talking and eating and laughing. “That’s weird,” I thought to myself. “How did they get over there?” Or better yet, “How did I get over here?” Treena Mielke I was on the MS walk. I was the mom, the matriOn The Other Side arch of the family. Several of my family members were walking along with me on this sun-soaked morning in May, where green leaves shyly played peekaboo in the soft summer breeze, and Marble the dog, sniffed everyone and everything along the way. Apparently, we were all lost. My first clue we were lost was when I noticed how wide the muddy, swollen Red Deer River was. My second clue was seeing all the people on the other side, and my third clue was the walkers and the bikers and the runners, all of whom smiled and waved at us, were all going the other way. Weird! We all had agreed to do the five-kilometre walk, except, of course, for Marble the dog, who didn’t really agree to anything, only trotted along happily. As it ended up, we lost one entire branch of the family tree along the way and the remaining kids all dramatically complained they were suffering from serious dehydration, exhaustion and malnutrition. Unfortunately, their verbal skills remained intact. “I’m hungry became I’m sooo hungry and I’m thirsty became “I’m dying of thirst, are we done yet?” Eventually we noticed signs that said “this way,” (probably put up later for directionally challenged people such as ourselves) and finally straggled across the finish line. We smiled and waved and pretended we had never been lost. People applauded appropriately. They gave us stickers and lip balm and more water. “Thank you,” I said, pretending to like water. We found our long lost branch of the family tree casually sitting on a picnic bench wolfing down hamburgers and wondering what took us so long. “We just decided to do the 10K,” I muttered, like I was some kind of really physically fit grandma who could do 10K while piggy backing a grandchild. Regardless, the MS walk was, once again, a wonderful adventure, filling a day in the time sheet of life with far more pluses than negatives. And, once again, the walk humbly reminds me of how the little things add up to really big things. During the month of May, I have had the privilege of interviewing several people who have had to do battle with one of life’s little curve balls. For them, this battle has been dealing with the unknown, unexplained and unpredictable symptoms of multiple sclerosis. It hasn’t been easy for them. They never said it was. They never told me they were particularly courageous. They didn’t have to. For them, courage is not about being verbal. It’s about smiling when you can’t find a reason. It’s about helping others, when self-pity seems much more appealing. It’s about making a decision every day to be grateful, hopeful and thankful, no matter what. And as I learned, much to my surprise, it’s about meeting a stranger with a notebook and pen in her hand and saying, “Hi, how can I help you?” And for that, I’m grateful. And, I’m grateful that for this year, as in the past, I can walk beside the Red Deer River with someone dear and special to my heart and laugh about not very much at all. Even if we are on a MS walk and we’re lost!

Working for a peaceful world Imagine for a moment all the wars of the world have come to a peaceful conclusion. The worst outbreak of violence in the world in the past 24 hours has been a fight in a bar in Irkutsk, Russia. What item do you think will lead the international news for the next 12 hours or however long it takes until something fresher come along? The bar fight in Irkutsk, of course. “If it bleeds, it leads,” says the axiom, and the world’s media follow it slavishly, so they will always give you the impression the world is drowning in violence. It is not. There are close to 200 independent countries in the world, and only one in a hundred is currently at war. They are both primarily civil wars, although there is some foreign involvement in each case. The Syrian civil war is extremely destructive of lives and property, the war in Afghanistan less so, and in both cases the fighting occasionally slops over their borders but that’s it. There are other countries where there is a lower level of civil conflict: the Congo, for example, or Colombia. There is terrorism in places such as Boko Haram’s bizarre campaign to impose Islamic law on Nigeria and the Naxalites’ long and forlorn struggle to make a Communist revolution in India. But the Sri Lankan civil war is over, the Iraqi civil war is over for the moment, at least, and the many little wars of West Africa are all over. So that’s it: two real wars, and a clutter of lesser conflicts that really do not merit the term. Why, then, do so many people think that the world is still overrun by war? The media are partly to blame but they are also manipulated by governments raise the spectre of war for their own ends. Wars that have not hap-

pened and are never likely to happen haunt the public’s imagination: a war in Korea, an Israeli attack on Iran, Western or Israeli intervention in Syria, a war between China and South-East Asian countries over islands in the South China Sea, a US-Chinese conflict in the Pacific, and on and on. A lot of people, some in uniform and some not, make a living off these mostly phantom fears, and they contribute to the general impression that the world is still a place where war is the normal state of affairs. Nonsense. We live in an era where, for the first time in history, no great power genuinely fears attack by any other, and where the number of actual wars can be counted on the fingers of one badly mutilated hand. Almost 90 million people died in the world wars and the big civil wars of the first half of the 20th century, out of a world population that was one-third of what it is now. In the second half of the century the death toll dropped steeply to 25 million or so, most of whom died in colonial independence wars and civil wars. And so far, in the 21st century, the total is less than one million people killed in war. What we have on our hands here is a miraculous and mostly unsung success story. There will doubtless be more wars but they may be small and infrequent. We are obviously doing something right. We should figure out what it is, and do more of it. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

BUSINESS

Council approves funding for repairs to fitness centre

New owners take over Rimbey Foods By Treena Mielke Rimbey Foods has new owners. As of June 2, the husband and wife team of Steven Yoon and Junnie Chung manage the store. The couple has moved to Rimbey from Calgary where they have lived with their 17-year-old son, Danny, since coming to Canada from Seoul, Korea in 2009. Having their own business and moving to a small community such as Rimbey is a dream come true for Yoon and his wife. “I wanted to have my own business,” Yoon said. “I was lucky to find this place in Rimbey. I know it is a small town but when I walked on main street, I realize that it is very busy, so full of life, so full of colors and I see many young people. People walk fast. They talk fast.” “It is big enough for me,” added his wife. “It is busy enough as well. And people are so friendly. I’m just happy to be here.” While in Seoul, Yoon owned his own textile trading business and had customers in Canada. While here on a business trip, he sent his future wife a postcard on which he wrote he hoped to be able to bring her to this country some day. Later he bought her an engagement ring in Toronto.

“Canada means a lot to me,” she said, smiling shyly. While the couple has both had experience in business, owning their own retail store, is a challenging and exciting venture. “I’m excited and worried,” Yoon said. “My idea is to try and keep the good service and the same staff and the same hours (at least for the time being). We want the transition to be as smooth as possible and we want to do our best to support the community.” Both Yoon and Chung are looking forward to making Rimbey their home. “We both like the big, wide, open sky and the trees,” said Chung. “We like nature. Everything is so fast in Seoul. “The air is more fresh here. It is what we both like.” “The only thing I have not adapted to is the weather,” added Yoon. “I don’t have the cold gene in my blood.” Sheldon and Quinton Ibbotson, former owners of Rimbey Foods, plan to spend more time with family and pursue other hobbies and interests. The brothers owned the business with their parents the Betty and Garvin Ibbotson (who has since passed away) for several years before taking over the store themselves.

At its regular meeting, May 27, council agreed to allocate up to $20,000 to repair the Community Fitness Centre. Peter Stenstrom, director of community services, said the condition of the fitness centre has deteriorated to a point action needs to be taken to ensure it remains safe and attractive to the community. He noted there have been some membership cancellations due to the concerns about the safety and functionality of some of the equipment and also the esthetic conditions in the current space. Trail tender awarded Council agreed to award the tender for construction of the 2013 walking trail to Border Paving Ltd. for $173,361. This tender includes extra work for the installation of a corrugated steel pipe to accommodate overland drainage in the area of the Provincial Building. Clubs get grants Council approved funding of $500 from the Community Events Grant Program for Rimbey Nursery School (spring dance fundraiser), the Rimbey & District Old Timers Association (annual reunion) and the Rimbey Masonic Lodge (ladies’ night). Cheque’s in the bank Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson received notification from Russ Watts, infrastructure manager for the central region of Alberta Transportation, that the 2013 municipal transportation grant of $142,680 has been electronically transferred to the Town of Rimbey.

Library board defends librarian against bullies Editor: On behalf of the Rimbey Municipal Library Board of Directors, I am submitting this letter (regardless of the vote outcome) to highlight our concern regarding bullying within our community. During the past few weeks, it has been obvious that our library manager, Jean Keetch, has been blamed for decisions made concerning the proposed library expansion. I would like to stress that Mrs. Keetch is an employee of the board of directors. It is the board of directors that discusses and votes on all major decisions and review financial and statistical information during our monthly meetings. Contrary to the beliefs of some people, the library

AI group supports WOZA Dear Editor: The following is a letter to WOZA (Women of Zimbabwe Arise) movement. I am writing on behalf of the Rimbey (Alta., Canada) Group of Amnesty International to tell you that we continue to support you all in your struggle for your basic human rights. Long-time abuse of power by your government has brought about the violation of Zimbabweans’ right to shelter, food, freedom of movement and residency, freedom of assembly and protection of the law. There are ongoing assaults, by government on the media, any political opposition, civil society activities and human rights defenders such as WOZA. Money is being channeled into the hands of the officials, instead of into institutions and programs for the people of Zimbabwe. As a result, the literacy rate is falling and the health system has collapsed. Life expectancy is among the lowest in the world. Yet, you members of WOZA, women and men, now 85,000 strong, continue to lobby and advocate on issues affecting your people. Despite harassment by police, despite repeated arrests and imprisonment accompanied by deprivation and sometimes torture, you continue to participate in peaceful protests and public demonstrations in the hope of change. You have friends here in Rimbey. Continued on page 10

manager does not run the board, nor does she hold decision-making powers over the town council. She is someone who is dedicated to her profession and genuinely has the community’s best interests at heart. The board of directors is thankful for such an exemplary employee and stand behind her 100 per cent in her role as library manager. The board of directors is particularly upset at the extremely offensive behaviour directed towards Mrs. Keetch in recent weeks. This includes: being mocked or belittled during public meetings; having her integrity and work ethics questioned by those who obviously do not know her well; being shunned by individuals;

having extremely slanderous comments and inaccurate accounts of how she runs the library put into printed and online material Our board will not tolerate this type of behaviour toward any of our employees. The bullying of any individual is inexcusable. When the perpetrators are adults, how on earth can we expect our younger generations to exhibit tolerance and understanding for each other when their elders fail to do so? Through all of this, Mrs. Keetch goes to work every day applying for grants and funding, co-ordinating pro-

grams for adults and children, representing our library at various conferences and meetings, and continuing to fight to make programs/events/library resources free or as cheap as possible for everyone. She does this for each individual in the Town of Rimbey/Ponoka County — whether he/she is an avid library user or not — because she believes in the importance of libraries and wants to help make Rimbey a town we can all be proud of. A visitor from Jamaica gave Rimbey residents an opportunity to temporarily step into a different culture and learn how his community is working hard to improve its economic, social and natural environment. Wolde Kristos, chairman of the Bluefields Bay Fishermen’s Friendly Society in Jamaica was in Rimbey recently to visit his colleague, Rebekah Seidel, the community development facilitator of her own company, CREO. Seidel, who began working with Kristos after visiting Bluefields Bay a few years ago, said the visit helped raise awareness. She is impressed work being done in Bluefields Bay is community led and it’s the people themselves who diligently work towards using resources and talents wisely. “An added bonus, of course, is that it is right on the ocean and it is very, very beautiful.” Kristos met with area residents, visited the Ellis Bluebird Farm and spoke at the Rimbey library about his community and his country. He also performed on the drums while visiting. The amiable visitor wants to spread the word about his community in the hopes of encouraging groups and students to participate in “study abroad” programs that could take place in the area. Kristos’s engaging smile and barely contained enthusiasm about his beloved Jamaica spoke volumes, but even without those endearing qualities, the young ambassador’s accomplishments speak for themselves. He has put to use his excellent knowledge of endemic birds in Jamaica with bird watching tours provided by his own company. He has dedicated himself to protecting and promoting the marine and terrestrial environment with particular emphasis at Bluefields on the

WCPS looks at budget implications and initiatives By Amelia Naismith A budget surplus of more than $200,000 is enabling Wolf Creek Public School (WCPS) board to move forward with a number of initiatives. However, due to fiscal constraints and a lack of what trustees call “hard data,” not every initiative presented was given support or even discussed. Below is a continuation of WCPS’s budgetary initiatives from last week’s edition of the Rimbey Review. Distance learning WCPS board is also giving $20,000 to purchase course rights from the Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC) for further develop a distance learning module program for students. The set up fee is a one-time expenditure said Gerry Varty, assistant superintendent of learning support and system improvement. The long distance module learning comes in 10 credit bundles and the schools are still able to collect credits. “It’s all revenue, it’s no expenses. We don’t have to put a teacher in front of them,” said Varty. If 10 students sign on for the bundles each year that pays for the next year’s operating of the program. Varty knows module learning isn’t the best learning model for every student but it opens a wider variety of courses students in smaller rural schools would otherwise not have access to. Having the module program also allows students who failed a class in the first semester to retake it in the second. Aspiring Leaders program Money was also given to an Aspiring Leaders initiative headed by Varty. “Aspiring Leaders has merit,” said Huff. He wanted to know why the division was having problems attracting people to central office administration positions. “I think we should find out why they’re not coming into these positions.” The $60,000 and Aspiring Leaders program funds a two-year program for candidates working to fill the administration positions. In the first year candidates are put through five “intensive” days of preprofessional framework, says assistant superintendent of people services Jayson Lovell. In the second the candidates are given release time to work shoulder to shoulder with administration professionals. “We want them to be hands on,” said Lovell. Trustee Karin Engen feels like with any other position, administrators need fundamental support. Last year, in the division, first-year teachers were part of a mentoring program with more veteran staff. WCPS was able to retain more first-year teachers than many other positions. Lovell says the positions are becoming harder to fill because administration is seen as a position that’s hard to balance. He also says the pool of candidates is becoming more shallow. That’s is why the Aspiring Leaders program is going to work to train those already in the division. “If we don’t grow our own we’re susceptible

to whatever’s out there.” Said Lovell. Literacy programs Despite some trustees’ concerns about the ability to produce enough funds to ensure the longevity of the program, a kindergarten to Grade 12 literacy program is also being supported. Huff says the $20,000 given is only a start up fee and for the program to be maintained and grow it will have to be continually fed financially. District profile funding Amber Hester, assistant superintendent of student services, says this is the first year there’s going to be no top off money given to fund severely disabled students. District profile students are those who are not able to function through a complete school day without continual one-on-one support. Last year the school division had 70 district profile students. When the criteria to identify a district profile student changed, 25 were dropped off the list. However, under the new guideline some different students were appointed, putting the number back at 70. Surpluses in all Hester’s budget lines are used and support coming from Alberta Education to top off funding is also gone. Hester is looking at an $180,000 shortfall, which the school board decided to grant. Hester wants to use the grants to be given to schools furthering initiatives focused on inclusion for district profile students. “I would like to provide schools with the opportunity to get creative. We don’t want to fund the same old same old.” The trustees stipulated the money and grants resulting are a one-time gift. “I’d be happy to couch it as a one year opportunity to advance inclusion,” said Hester. She feels every child is a puzzle and the schools would be grateful for the limited grant and simply be given the opportunity to try. Mental health initiatives The school board also granted another $55,000 toward mental health initiatives. Over the past three years $40,000 was given to complete Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) training. Hester wants to expand the training to more staff. “The training is fantastic. I wouldn’t want to expand the training if I hadn’t seen it in action.” She says the training changes the staff dealing with students in crisis or heightened states, such as anxiety, depression or suicide. Without the boosted funds Hester says it would take another additional three years to compete the training expansion. She says if the training can be fast-tracked a contractor can be brought onsite to the staff. Hester also wants to conduct research and look at different social skills programs, selecting the best for WCPS and focusing on programs for different grade levels. “We just don’t have the manpower to research them all and bring them all in.” Hester wants someone for the program where that would be their only task.

Solar and wind energy reduces carbon footprint, heating bill By Treena Mielke At first glance, other than the wind turbine turning lazily to the west of the driveway, Paul McLauchlin’s quarter section northeast of Rimbey fits the mold of any such farm in rural Alberta. Ducks splash about happily in puddles in the front yard and, as far as the eye can see, acres of rolling fields stretch out to meet the cover of green forest. It’s tranquility at its best but the cost of such tranquility can be expensive and environmentally detrimental. However, for McLauchlin, a Ponoka County councilor and owner of MCA Environmental Management, a rural lifestyle means using solar and wind power and going “green” as much as possible. It’s definitely cheaper, and even though a heating bill that hovers below $500 annually is no small payback for McLauchlin’s out-of-the-box thinking, environmental concerns were the primary motivator for him to go ahead with the project, he said. “I’m still part of the system but I wanted to be as environmentally friendly as possible and decrease my own carbon footprint.” McLauchlin’s office is designed as a net zero building, designed and built with the help of Levi Blackmore of RoyL Construction. The two-storey 2,000 square-foot building is designed using LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) considerations. Windows are triple-paned and its double walls are insulated with fibre wool. “I suspect it is at least silver (according to LEED accreditation), if audited. We have not had it audited,” he said. McLauchlin also has installed a Cansolair. The system, designed in Newfoundland, is made up of more than 200 beer and pop cans cut so as to create fins which create turbulence in the air as it moves through the cans. The system heats 1,000 square feet of office space year-round, even throughout January and December. McLauchlin’s office is powered by a grid intertie 1.8 kw 90-foot skystream turbine installed about three years ago. The REC solar panels with a Fronius 2,000 inverter were put up recently. Both the panels and wind turbine were installed with the help of Pieter Broere and Gillis Demers. Electrical connections were done with the help of Larry Hawkings of El Hawk. The solar panels and wind turbine peak at 4.4 kilowatts an hour. “My office uses 700 watts an hour or 0.7 kwh during the work day and .075 at night,” he said. “Therefore the energy production of the office is net positive with unused power being used by the farm and the house, and if it is not used it goes to the grid. McLauchlin anticipates Alberta will begin to take advantage of the solar energy in the future, noting solar panels work best in cold, sunny conditions. He believes solar energy, largely untapped in Alberta, is a huge resource that needs to be taken advantage of. “Solar energy is so untapped here.” He noted that Germany has 18,000 times more installed solar capacity than Alberta, although the solar potential in Calgary is far greater than in Berlin. The government of Alberta’s support of solar has been small but there has been some funding available to farmers to install kilowatts of solar PV systems. Alberta solar industry is small, but it does support 86 small- to medium-sized solar related businesses, according to a quote on the website www.greenenergyfutures.ca by Rob Harlan, the

executive director of the Solar Energy Society of Alberta. McLauchlin has talked to others who have thought about harnessing solar energy, but have not been proactive to that end. “I’ve talked to so many people and they all say I’d like to do it one day. But they need to move on it now. Things are cheaper and it is easier than it used to be.” Meanwhile McLauchlin, himself has planned to put some more of that wonderful solar energy to good use. “Of course, I am not done yet. I am expanding another five kilowatts of solar this summer and then I am at maximum capacity for my transformer.”

Paul McLauchlin uses LED lighting in his LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) two-storey 2,000 square-foot office which has been built using LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) considerations.

Library received over $50,000 from society By June Norvila A variety of people and families benefit from access to a local library, its resources and its programs but few people seem interested in how it is able to pay for those resources and programs. Funding from the Bentley Library Society is pivotal to the continued programming and updating of the local rural library. If it were not for the fundraising arm of the library — the Bentley Library Society — not nearly as much could be offered at the Bentley municipal library. In an attempt to help the public better understand how important a small volunteer group can be, this report explains only funds contributed through the efforts of volunteers who form the Bentley Library Society. In the five years from 2008 to 2012 alone, the society disbursed more than $49,000 of lottery fund to help the library in various ways. For a new photocopier and laminator the society put out almost $15,600. Over $6,700 was spent buying

books and $5,500 for periodicals and magazines. Promotions, including an annual donation to the FCSS newsletter, cost $5,000. Another $4,200 was used for administrative costs. Aid for staff to attend annual conferences has amounted to almost $3,400 and programming received $2,500. DVDs were purchased to the tune of $1,150 and close to $1,000 was spent on furniture. Besides helping the library, the society also doled out $4,000 worth of scholarships to help students entering post-secondary education. In 2013 over $10,650 has been budgeted for the library and another $10,000 for 2014. From finances raised from hosting its own events/projects, the society was also able to donate an additional $10,000, with another $4,000 budgeted for in 2013. With a much-anticipated casino slated for 2015, volunteers will be needed to man that event when the time comes. In the meantime, fundraising ongoing efforts including operating the indoor arena concession

during two of the farmer’s markets. More members are needed to keep the society viable. It seems people think volunteer groups will just keep going along without their help — with someone else’s help. To make sure the Bentley Library Society can remain active, additional volunteers are needed. Many now serving on the board have done so for many years and some are ready to retire from it. People who will be active, committed members and let their names stand for the executive and directors are needed.

Rec plan meeting June 12 By Treena Mielke Residents will have a chance to provide input regarding a recreation master plan at a public meeting next week. The meeting will be held at the Rimbey Community Centre June 12 at 7 p.m. “This is the final draft but we are open to feedback and will continue to take feedback for a week or two,” said recreation director Peter Stenstrom. The draft plan, which has taken around a year to formulate, has been put together by RC Strategies, a consulting company based in Edmonton. To garner information, residents have responded to an on-line questionnaire. Opinions have also been obtained from community groups and businesses. The recreation board and town staff has also been involved in the plan. “The future of recreation is about to be laid out on paper,” he said. “It will have significant impact on Rimbey in the long term and it is important the public let us know how they feel about it.”

PARK GOINGS Marjorie Dorothy Goings (Iddings) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the age of 98 years. Marge was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta on September 6, 1914. Of her almost 99 years, 90 of them were spent in Rimbey and area. Marge loved being a farmer’s wife, a gardener, and a member of the Eastern Star. She was unofficially recognized as the area’s local historian. If there was any discussion about local history, the solution was “ask Marge”. Her home was always open to her friends and family. Marge will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughter, Penny (Alex) Waldron of Rimbey; her two treasured grandsons, Mark (Renae) Waldron; and Michael (Tralisa) Waldron, all of Houston, Texas; as well as four cherished great grandsons. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two sisters, Gwen Stevens of Edmonton; and Connie Protti of Richmond, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. Marge was predeceased by her parents, Glenn and Eva Iddings; her beloved husband, Everett in 1988; and her brother, Roland Iddings in 1938. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Marge’s Life will be held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. An Interment Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Marge’s Memory may be made directly to the David Thompson Health Trust, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. Condolences to the Family may also be expressed by email to: special_reflections@telusplanet.net Funeral and Cremation Arrangements for the Late Marjorie Dorothy Goings (Iddings) entrusted to the care of OBERHAMMER FUNERAL CHAPELS LTD. Rimbey, AB. 403-843-4445

Mrs. Helen Isobel Park of Bentley, Alberta passed away peacefully on Monday May 27, 2013 at the age of 94 years. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her three children; Vic (Karen), Dean (Judith), and Berdee (Larry) as well as by her precious grandchildren; Damon, Jaddon, Brad, Maureen and James; plus eight great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her parents, siblings, her beloved husband Ray Park in 1991 an by many cherished friends. A Celebration of Helen’s life will be held from the Forshee Community Hall on Monday June 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Lending Cupboard of Red Deer or to the charity of the donors choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family by visiting: www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM serving Central Alberta with locations in Rimbey and Lacombe in charge of the arrangements. The funny thing is that NOS4A2 is a novel that’s basically about good and evil, but it’s not the characters that make it so. Yes, author Joe Hill created a vile creature that’ll make you wince and a heroine who’s reluctantly heroic, but what really makes this book unsettling is that we never know where Hill hides the horror. This is an absolutely squirmy novel that’s better than anything Santa ever brought you. If that sounds like your kinda book, then NOS4A2 is a ho-ho-whole lotta creepiness.

Visit to ruins of ancient civilization fascinating “For this says the Lord God of Israel “Take this cup filled with my anger and cause all the nations to drink it... all kingdoms of the world which are upon the face of the earth...they will fall and rise no more”...His cry of judgment will reach the ends of the earth, for the Lord will bring His case against all nations. He will judge all the people of the earth...” (Jeremiah 15, 26, 27, & 31) Part 9 of a series By Dianne Kushniryk Whether you go to Cambodia on a holiday or a mission you should not miss the opportunity to visit the ancient ruins of Angkor just outside the city of Siem Reap. Although an ideal trip takes from three days to one week to visit most of the 50 temples of the Angkor kingdom, we were able to hit some highlights in a morning. This ancient civilization flourished between the eighth and the 13th century when 26 successive kings built these magnificent stone temples. Although all remaining visible buildings of this ancient kingdom are religious monuments (Hindu and Buddhist), in the distant past Angkor was the site of royal dwellings and cities and towns. The many temples of Angkor are built of brick, sandstone and laterite (ironrich clay) and decorated with hand carvings of historical and mythological themes occasionally interspersed with scenes of everyday life. Besides the intricate and beautiful bas-relief carving on stone walls, lintels (door headers), pediments (triangle crowning front of building), and friezes (crown moldings) there are often Sanskirt (ancient East Indian language) or Khmer inscriptions carved into door jambs. The text of these writings could be anything from poems to the deities, eulogies to the king(s) or even inventories of items belonging to the gods and lists of temple servants. Although the 20 years of turmoil and war that Cambodia has survived

played a large part in the damage to this architectural wonder, greater damage has been caused by thieves who strip the temples of free standing figures, lintels, pediments and even stone heads and faces from statues and nagas (multi-headed serpents) for sale to Western collectors. However since Angkor became a World Heritage site in 1993 the Cambodian and Thai governments have become more inclined to prevent these abuses. Even as we freely wandered the corridors, shrine rooms and open air pathways of these ancient ruins we were able to see huge cranes and other equipment in areas being restored and we marvelled that these buildings were originally built with manpower only. Ankgor Wat which means “the city (which became a) pagoda” is the central temple of the group and the most awe-inspiring. It is the world’s largest religious monument and covers about nine hectares of the 200 hectare site it sits on. It is a pyramid of three levels. Each level is enclosed by a gallery with four entrance pavilions and corner towers. The summit of the pyramid is crowned by five towers in a quincunx, an arrangement of five objects in which four occupy the corners and the fifth the centre. Although best seen over several hours and more than one visit, Angkor Wat’s details, atmosphere and marvellous variety of styles left us feeling this was a wonderful ending to an incredible trip. “No temple will be seen in the holy city [the New Jerusalem] for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple...the glory of God illuminates the city and the Lamb is its light. The nations of the earth will walk in its light and they [the Kingdom of God] will reign forever and ever.” (Revelation 21:22-24, 22:5) Dianne Kushniryk is a Christian essayist who has been published in the Rimbey Review and the Red Deer Advocate. She now writes almost exclusively for her church, Rimbey New Life Fellowship.
