In terms of locally grown food... how close is local?
Nelson Staff
West Kootenay Advertiser
More than 40 people turned out Saturday afternoon for a rally in front of the Kootenay CoOp aimed at raising awareness for changes in the definition of local food. The local grocery store is on the leading edge of a movement to stop
products as local that were grown in markets that can be further than 2,000 kilometres away, and that the definition is a radical departure from the old official definition. Local farmer Colleen Ross, Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko and Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall all spoke to the crowd.

KP Park concerns addressed by Salmo village council sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Salmo residents are a passionate folk. Each time council meets, a handful of citizen watchdogs attends to keep an eye on what is happening within their village limits. Last week was no exception, as it was standing room only when ball players and Legion members united to question the village’s proposed
master plan of the Knights of Pythias (KP) park in downtown Salmo. Although the plan was first displayed on the village website last fall, its existence only recently became known to many residents, in particular the members of Salmo’s Legion which is located in front of the park. At contention within the proposed plan is an extravagant water fountain
Irma Browning, active member of the Salmo Legion, holds the KP Park master plan. Within its details, a water feature and benches appear to be infringing upon legion property. Sheri Regnier

FIDDLE CHAMPION SCOTT WOODS & BAND PRESENT
Adjustment for civic boundary Trail News Coming out of the gates, Teck and Trail already have a lead, according to the Area A director. Ali Grieve was referring to the details about a mutual agreement between Teck Trail Operations and the City of Trail, released last week, which outline the city’s intent to expand its boundary into Teck-owned land in Area A (Columbia Gardens). The tentative deal between Teck and the city, however, is far, far away from being a done deal, said Grieve. Grieve said both the city and Teck already stand to gain quite a bit “coming out of the gates.” “It is a win-win agreed to amongst themselves. “But in order for the province to allow the proposal to move forward, they will have to see that the stakeholders’ issues have been addressed.” And the issue is money, in particular, how to fairly distribute tax dollars generated from the area within the proposed boundary extension, which includes the Waneta Dam and Teck’s Waneta Reload facility. “It comes down to money, tax dollars and there should be no losers here,” said Grieve. She said potential negative impacts and how they can be fixed will be addressed and then tax-sharing formulas for the Waneta Dam will be worked out between the Beaver Valley and Trail. Montrose water The glass is almost full for the Village of Montrose as the final stages of its water treatment project began last week. The on-line chlorination process began on Tuesday and for village residents, this
change to the tap water will most likely be noticeable. As the tap water reaches “official” water quality, it may taste or smell a little odd, explained Kevin Chartres, chief administrative officer for the village. “Changes in both taste and odour will obviously be more no-
ticeable because the system was previously un-chlorinated.” Chartres said while the chlorine works to clean the inside of the pipes, the taste and odour will be more noticeable until a free residual of chlorine is maintained. He said it will take some time to obtain a consistent level of
chlorine in the system, and levels could fluctuate from 0.2 to 1.5 parts per million (ppm), but ultimately the regulation requires 0.2 mg of chlorine per litre of water at the end of the lines. “After a few weeks, most consumers will easily adjust to the difference,” he added.

Through the Walls of Time
Bealby Point’s namesake wrote fruit ranching classic greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advrtiser
Fourteenth in a (more-or-less) alphabetical series on West Kootenay-Boundary place names. Bealby Point, a community just outside Nelson on the south shore of Kootenay Lake’s West Arm, is named for John Thomas Bealby (1858-1944), a pro-
lific author and fruit rancher. Born in England and educated at Cambridge, Bealby came to this area in 1907 and two years later published the classic Fruit Ranching in British Columbia, part memoir and part manual for prospective immigrants. Amongst many other works, Bealby contributed to the 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britan-
nica (collaborating on some items with noted anarchist Peter Kropotkin), edited the Scottish Geographical Magazine, and translated works on diverse subjects. Upon arriving in Canada, he settled at Bonnington, but later bought the property near Nelson that now bears his name. The ranch was originally called Florence Park after the children of
owners William and Luella Roberts — daughter Florence and son Park. In addition to raising chickens and cows, the Roberts’ opened a hotel in 1899 even though it was out of the way. In an ad they promised “A pleasant place to spend afternoon, evenings and enjoy delicacies that cannot be obtained in hotels or restaurants at Nelson.
Good stabling. Open day and night. Can be reached by either road or water.” Within a few months they had a potential deal to sell the hotel to J.L. Stocks, but it fell through. The entire 143-acre property — of which 35 acres had been cultivated and 580 fruit trees planted — was listed for sale the following year without any takers.
A rumour had circulated that Nelson’s street railway would be extended as far as Florence Park (the company denied it) and Mrs. Roberts sued the Canadian Pacific Railway and Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway for $4,000 over 12 acres expropriated in the middle of their land. It’s not clear how the case was resolved. The Roberts’ con-
tinued to run their hotel at least through 1904. J.T. Bealby continued to live and ranch there with his family until 1940 when he retired to Vancouver. Signs denoting Bealby Road and Bealby Point perpetuate his memory. The Roberts left the area and are long forgotten. As of 1939 they ran the Riviera Apartment Hotel in San Diego.

Community Christian bikers seek out the truth KARL YU
West Kootenay Advertiser
While there is a stigma bikers live with, that they’re associated with crime and the underworld, that’s not the case with the Christian Motorcyclists’ Association. The local chapter (Truth Bearers) of the non-profit, interdenominational Christian organization is seeking new members, says president Ian Robins. “Our basic reason for being is to do outreach at various motorcycling events and to go to rallies and volunteer to help in many, many different ways,” Robins explains. “To gain one’s colours in our
Ian Robins - CMA ‘Truth Bearers’ president
association, you have to undergo a certain amount of training and you can join various ministries.” He says there is a servants’ team, whose members assist in a number of different ways by meeting various needs at rallies, whether it be helping promoters with registration or clean-up. In addition, there are women’s, prayer, prison, hospitality, music, mechanical, first aid, and chil-
Karl Yu
dren’s ministry teams. “Various people find their niche and we work in different ways,” Robins says, adding that the Truth Bearers cover the Kootenay-Boundary region with membership extending from Nelson, Castlegar, Trail to Princeton. “Our mission statement is, ‘Travelling the highways and byways, changing the world, one heart at a time.’ We’re an outreach organization
rather than a social club of Christian riders,” he says. Robins explains that the association’s mandate is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ wherever members are. “We don’t stipulate what denomination that would be as long as its orthodox Christianity and acceptance of the basics of Christian belief,” he says. “We are an evangelical outreach association but we also have a good time. We love to ride motorcycles and we love to be with motorcycle people and we love talking motorcycles.” Anyone seeking more information can go to www.cmacanada.ca or contact Robins at 250-447-2511.

Entertainment
Special musical lineup goes over big at Castlegar Sunfest Continued from P. A5
Many Castlegar residents were dressed in the fashion of that time, and went home that night bubbling with love child enthusiasm. The next morning started with a bang with local boys Concrete Harvester in
only their second gig, cowpunkin’ it out. Johnny Cash may well have rolled over, but that’s a given with these boys. Next Kathy Kolar and her band rocked the stage with some of the best radio rock tunes of the last decade. With wireless microphone and gui-
tar, Kathy and one of her sidemates cruised through the crowd interacting with the new fans they gained that day. The music then started to get an intellectual edge with the jazzy Grant and Mara, and then Cecil Foley played lovely renditions of Neil
Young material with some very fine guitars including a vintage Epiphone arch top. Next up was Pauline Lamb with a three piece band, showing us why she is a Kootenay legend. Playing originals and drawing from the wealth of
Rock and Folk songs from the likes of J.J. Cale and Van Morrison, her band showed the gratefully-attended the nuances and dynamics that live music can offer. After Pauline the Super Cats students showed off their Rock
and Roll chops with the help of their instuctor Yanive. Last but not least, BC/DC showed everybody what real Rock & Roll is all about. Their lesson didn’t fly over the class’ head. No, they shook us to the bone
all evening long. As the sun began its final descent behind the cliffs of the Lion’s Head, the record crowd dissipated from Kinsmen park satiated with the joyous head-banging that only the best music can provide.
with any 2013 road bike purchase June 1st - July 14th Sunfest Skaters – Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers led the three-bout card which also featured the West Kootenay Kannibelles on Sat. June 1 at Selkirk College. Pictured is Roller Ursula Aggress breaking free vs Kamloops. Final score of the opening bout was 436-132 for the hosts.

Curtain to be raised on new Castlegar mountain biking route submitted
On Sunday, June 9 Castlegar Friends of Parks and Trails will host a volunteer mountain bike trail build followed by the grand opening of the first sanctioned downhill mountain biking trail in Castlegar called “Hail Merry.” The build will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a
barbecue for the volunteers provided by the Castlegar friends of Parks and Trails Society. We will then open the trail to the public at 3 p.m. There is also an option to become a member of the Castlegar friends of Parks and Trails Society for $10. For those interested in helping we would love to have
you out and please bring a shovel or rake. The site of this trail is not difficult to find. Head up to the Merry Creek Forestry Service Road - located up Highway 3 toward Grand Forks about half a kilometer past the Timberland Motel on the right. Look for the “expect sudden weather changes” highway sign. Follow Merry
Creek FSR for two kilometers and you’ll come to a parking lot on your right and the new trail is directly behind looking uphill. If you enjoy any type of biking in the area come lend a hand because this will be the first of many! For general details, e-mail: info@friendsoftrails.org
A big event is coming up this Sunday in Castlegar.

There were 18,244 total valid votes in the region. Animal Control officers cut ties with RD
The Boundary animal control officers have terminated their contract with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB). As a result, the RDKB is looking for someone to fill the shoes of Richard Smith and John Jansezian as of last Saturday, said Elaine Kumar, RDKB director of corporate administration.
“They gave their notice,” said Kumar. “I was disappointed, however, with what’s been going on (lately) it’s been rough for them.” She told the Gazette that they have been harassed by residents in the Boundary. Swinging Fiddles at GFSS auditorium on June 11
Join Canadian Fiddle champion Scott Woods as he and his band put on a twohour fiddle show at the auditorium at Grand Forks Secondary School, beginning at 7 p.m. in Grand Forks. Sponsored by the Boundary Music Educators and Habitat For Humanity Boundary. Tickets are $20 adults and $10 students.

For those who continue to notice the chlorine taste, the village suggests that drinking water be chilled in the refrigerator before consumption. Also, residents can purchase products with activated carbon filtration which will remove most of the chlorine and its by-products.
Chartres said careful monitoring of the disinfection process and of residual chlorine levels ensure that consumer complaints are minimized. A “Water Condition Normal Notice” will be issued when the drinking water official is satisfied the water quality meets the requirements issued by the BC Drinking Water Protection Regulation.

Sculpture Talk
2013
2012
Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. It is all tied together by tubular metal leading to the curved handlebars; bits and pieces simulate the engine within the triangular frame.
Burnt out halogen lights, the bulbs removed so that they resemble blossoms, are interspersed with the leaves along the lighter flexible branches, providing movement and contrast. The entire work is approximately twelve feet squared, set on a contrasting piece of stone. The finished effect is magical, impressive in its presentation and presence; a tree of light that dances, sways and shimmies.
Although he has been sculpting for about 30 years, Kuhl still considers it a hobby first and foremost. “I’ve done garden pieces and the like for family and friends for years now,” he says with a chuckle. “I’ll see an old set of pruning shears or something similar and think to myself, ‘That could be a nice bird’s beak, or maybe its legs at a certain angle.’ Often, it ends up not being a bird at all by the time I’m finished, but something else entirely.”
Al Kuhl ‘Rough Rider’ (recycled metal) First time Sculpturewalk participant Al Kuhl has created a sleek and sexy work that will grab the attention of those who long to savour the wind in their hair, dream of future road trip adventures or recapture the glory of past youth. ‘Rough Rider’ pays homage to the classic motorcycles of the 40’s and 50’s – Harley Davidsons, Nortons and Indians – using reclaimed metal. The sculpture beguiles and invites viewers to physically interact with it, to sit astride the lowslung beast and grasp the handlebars while letting their imagination run wild.
Displaying a number of his sculptures at a ‘Made In Canada’ arts and crafts fair held on Canada Day in Kelowna’s Riverfront Park a couple of years ago made him realize his hobby could turn into full time work once he retires from his nine to five job. “I sold a number of pieces there and got a lot of positive feedback, so you never know,” he allows. “Right now it is something I do in my spare time, but I enjoy it, so…” He leaves the thought unfinished deliberately. ‘Rough Rider’ was originally created for the local Gallery 2 Spring Art Exhibit, although the piece has been in Kuhl’s mind for some time. “I’ve always loved bikes, especially the older bomber style ones,” says Kuhl. “They are basic in their structure but have great lines, and I’ve tried to capture that in this work.”

Carl Schlichting ‘Tree of Light’ (steel/halogen bulbs) Winlaw sculptor Carl Schlichting always thinks big. Last year he gave us the twelve foot QR, a massive vertical steel pipe bursting volcano-like at the top end, spewing replicated fragments above it. That work was purchased by the City of Nelson and installed in the refurbished Railtown section at the west end of Baker Street. This year is no different in the scope and size of his installation.

I create large pieces that have a central feature and multiples expanding from it to provide contrast and diversity.” ‘Tree of Light’ is ambitious, in keeping with Schlichting’s creative style. He’s taken fire-twisted steel I-beams and angled and shaped them to emulate the trunk and main branches. From this starting point, he has attached spring steel whip ‘branches’ and festooned
Schlichting’s background – one of a number of prairie-raised siblings all blessed with artistic talent, in addition to a distinguished career as a museum artifacts conservator – is the nurturing point at the heart of his creative talents. It is obviously in the genes. This year will see his daughter Simone display her own sculpture at the event. “We are stylistically quite different,” he says straightforwardly. “Her art as a jeweller is on a smaller scale, delicate with strong lines, but she’s a real talent and I’m very proud of her.” Inspired by his siblings in part, Schlichting moved to the west coast to study art at Langara College. He transferred his knowledge into an artistic career, treating and mounting artifacts at numerous museums and galleries in Canada, the United States and at stops overseas. Now, he is content to stick close to home in his Slocan Valley studio, re-working reclaimed steel and metal into imaginative sculptures. ‘Tree of Light’ is exactly that, a flowing, flexible work that incorporates movement and static elements. It displays Schlichting’s vision and ingenuity well in developing large-scale, expansive steel-based works that stem from his love of working in his favourite medium. The addition of other materials adds to the overall effect. His entry here personifies his creativity and dexterity in thinking and sculpting writ large.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
June 7, 2013
Tip of the Week: The first of two eclipse seasons officially ends tomorrow at the exact moment of the New Moon. It occurs in Gemini at 8:56 am PDT. Although the three eclipses are behind us, two lunar and a solar in between, do you think they left an impression? Like fish in water contending with new currents, the effects can be subtle especially when it is unclear what to look for or expect. But with a little bit of awareness we can see and feel and notice and realize the activations that have taken place leaving their mark and influence forever more. While this can be said of any moment or event in time, some time periods are much more impactful than others. So, however these eclipses were destined to influence us in the respective ways they would, according to our respective destinies, the season is now over and the torch has been passed awaiting it’s time to re-ignite the next eclipse season of 2013 which occurs on October 18th starting with a Lunar Eclipse in Aries followed by a Solar Eclipse two weeks later on November 3rd in Scorpio. In the meantime, we are back to regular New and Full Moons which can still be impactful and which invariably play key roles as well. From a wider angle, 2013 is proving to be very eventful so far and this trend will escalate let alone continue. This first year of a whole new era, according to Mayan Cosmology, is certainly living up to its forecast as a transformational one. As well, the Year of the Chinese Water Snake in which a shedding of old skins both individually and collectively is destined to occur should be quite evident by now. That the snake year tends to have a back and forth sort of wiggle and shake effect, producing a wavering sense of confidence and with considerable intensity all makes sense according to what I see occurring. How about you?
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
The effects of this transformational time are evident to many and are most likely so to you. This will prove especially true over the next few weeks. Your energy levels stand to be running high and this is contributing to a punchy, rebellious and impulsive mood. The release valve to this high pressure system is to focus on your own change and avoid projecting on to others.
If you have not already made good of this extra expansive cycle that has been lingering since last year, now is your opportunity. You know that saying: “if you snooze you lose…” well take it as a hint. The creative potential of this time requires that you dig a little deeper and push a little harder, maybe even a lot of both. Carpe diem!
This New Moon in your sign should come as a welcome break. This is your heads-up to make the most of it and perhaps cover lost ground. The pace may have been frustrating over the past while in terms of progress. At best it has been a time of seeds and germination. Now the sprouts are coming through. Expect accelerated growth.
You are entering an extra delicate period. You may have to dip even deeper into your inner reservoir of faith. Prayer, meditation, retreat, more rest time, reaching out for support, exercising positive thoughts and spoken words and, perhaps above all keeping your imagination in check are all the types of answers that will prove valuable at this time.
Change continues to snap and crackle in the air. Some of it is intentional and due to your own deliberate choices and actions while some of it may be taking you by surprise. The time is right to increase your scope of communications and extend your reach beyond familiar bounds. Diplomacy remains extra important and includes win/win negotiations.
Your public and professional spheres will be activated by this lunar cycle, in a big way. It is important that you be focused and disciplined and that you do your homework. This includes research, training, outreach and calculated risk taking. If you are not as sure of your direction as you would like, focus to determine what seems best and ask for guidance as necessary.

Your energy levels have been rising and this trend will continue. This new cycle will present the opportunities and inspiration to break through inner and outer lines of resistance. The inner lines include potentially limiting beliefs, attitudes, perceptions and self-concepts. Intend to keep an open mind, listen more, talk less create a dynamic momentum.
A deep theme called ‘the dual desires of the soul’ is not only a core life theme, it is very active now. It implies the process of deciphering whether it is better to move away from or towards the source. Both have their time and place. Moving towards source is deeper and more serious yet can prove very empowering while moving away if more, well… out there. Your call!
A good deal of stimulating events and activity on relationship fronts should be keeping you busy now and over the coming weeks. This is likely to be an expansive and opportune time. This cycle began last year actually and now is coming to yet another peak. Yet, it is important that you are willing and actively letting go of and in fact clearing the old to make way for the new.
You have entered an important cycle calling for improvement. This can apply to a variety of fronts yet is most likely to be needed in the overall quality of your lifestyle. By extension it is your daily rhythm and routine that requires your attention and this includes your work or job. Fortunately, this is an extra creative cycle. Be willing to give a lot to receive.
If you feel due for some added playtime in your life, get excited because the opportunity for some has arrived. The season and the stars both are in alignment for fun. This inspirational wave can also be used for more serious creative self-expression. Yet, for balance at least some measures of social activity and cultural stimulation will provide the seasoning in the mix.
The creative focus and potential of this cycle will be evident close to home. However, since home is where your heart is, literally, it could produce an urge to reach out and cover new ground as well. Your ambitions should be on the steady rise as well so you will feel moved to be productive. If you can, focus on the home front first.

Choosing the right bathing suit
Bathing suit season is on the horizon and summer fun might drive some into a panic. However, there are bathing suit styles that enhance what you want to show off and conceal what you want to camouflage. The first step in choosing a bathing suit is to make an accurate assessment of your body shape. Stand in front of the mirror without any clothes on and figure out which features define your physique. Perhaps your bust is large, or you have more curve in your hips. Maybe you are tall and lanky. Taking note of your body will help narrow down your swimsuit options. Next, go through your current swimsuit collection and find out which bathing suit you’ve worn in the past has best suited your shape or earned you a few compliments. You may want to choose the style that is the most comfortable and supportive. When selecting a new suit, choose one that is similar in cut to your favorite. Swimsuits are designed to fit snugly and are made from elasticized fabric. Chlorinated water or saltwater can either shrink fabric over time or allow it to wear out and sag. Be honest about your current clothing size and consider buying a swimsuit in one size larger so it won’t cut off your circulation or make you appear uncomfortable. You also want to be reasonable about which styles you can wear. That will be dictated by shape and also by the activities you plan to
do in the swimsuit. For example, if you live an active lifestyle and surf or play water sports, a supportive, one-piece style swimsuit may be a smart choice. If you have a large bust or one that is extremely small, you may want to avoid revealing bikini tops, which may look overly filled or not filled out at all. Here are some other tips based on body type. * Plus size: Choose a one-piece style that features a single color that is the polar opposite of your skin tone. Fair-skinned people should look for darker colors, while dark-toned individuals should select brighter colors. Try to find a suit that is fitted at the waistline to slim you in this area. * Short legs: High-cut leg openings on swimsuits help to elongate the legs and make you appear taller. * Small bust: Select a bikini top that has triangular-shaped cups, ruffles or a tie-front to add a little bulk to the area. * Large bust: Choose a top that comes with a supportive bra -- those mesh bras in most bathing suits won’t keep the breasts contained and supported. Many bathing suit manufacturers now offer swimsuits with more substantial bras inside. * Pear shape: Emphasize the top of your body with a bold color or pattern and downplay the bottom with a dark shade. * Short torso: Select a two-piece suit that draws attention to the chest and shoulders and a bottom that sits lower on the hips to elongate the torso. There is no right shape when it comes to wearing a bathing suit. It’s possible for anyone to look flattering when hitting the beach or lounging poolside.
