RCMP make pot arrests On June 2 just before 2 a.m., Kimberley RCMP seized over 1,000 grams of marihuana from a vehicle during a road check on highway 95A. Officers were conducting on highway 95A north of Marysville when a vehicle turned around prior to the road check. Officers caught up to the vehicle and while dealing with the occupants noted an odour of marihuana. The subjects were arrested and a search of the vehicle conducted. In addition to marihuana, police seized cash and drug related items. Two males from Ed-

monton (23 and 24) face charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking. They were released on a $1000 bail for court in August. Previously, on May 30, RCMP executed a search warrant on a residence on 2nd Ave South, Cranbrook, right across the street from a middle school. Police had received information that the subjects were actively involved in trafficking and sold to students. This heightened police concern and an investisee Pot page 4

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Don't Flutter By, Butterfly!

I never know what I am going to discover in my yard and garden when I have the help of my preschool-aged daughter. There are all sorts of wonders out there that usually remain hidden from adult eyes, from odd-shaped rocks to various creepy crawlies. While I might not get as excited about some of the insects she discovers, such as the large, mean-looking beetle or the red-bummed spider, others have us both sitting quietly in awe. Butterflies would be topping the list of our favourite winged garden guests. If you are looking to attract more butterflies to your garden, you have to think like one. What would you be looking for in a perfect garden? Fortunately for us, what butterflies are looking for is not so different from our idea of beauty. Butterflies like sun-loving flowers that produce lots of pollen and nectar, such as asters, daisies, echinacea or hollyhock. All you need to get started are some of the butterfly-friendly plants in your garden or in a planter. Once they start blooming, it should not be long until the butterflies come. They “smell” flowers with sense receptors on their antennae and legs, and butterflies have more receptors in their feet that allow them to “taste” whether the nectar is good to eat. Besides the sweet smells and tastes, butterflies are attracted by bright colours like red, yellow and purple. Also important is that the flowers have a sturdy stalk that can support a butterfly while it eats. Bees - both honeybees and their cousins, the mason bees - are other important pollinators that should be getting an invitation to your yard. They are also looking for nectar- and pollenrich flowers. If you plant a variety of plants with different flower types, it will ensure that a wide range of pollinators will visit. Trumpet-shaped flowers will attract butterflies and bumblebees while smaller blooms will appeal to smaller bees with skinnier tongues. The names of some plants already indicate their ability to attract winged creatures. Buddleia, also known as ‘Butterfly Bush’, is irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds with its fragrant, arching clusters. The large, honey-scented blooms of this perennial plant flower on first year wood and come in various colours. Removing faded flower heads will encourage the Butterfly Bush to continue blooming. Monarda, or ‘Bee Balm’, and Asclepias tuberosa, the ‘Butterfly Weed’, are other examples. The intense scent of lavender suggests it is also an attractive plant for butterflies. Russian Sage is often seen as an alternative to lavender and it is a favourite with butterflies as well. New this year is a shorter and more compact Russian Sage ‘Little Spire’. It is great for those smaller yards and maintains its nice form. The lavender-blue flowers are great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. A true multi-tasker, this plant is also deer-resistant. Besides offering appetizing food, supplying a source of water and a nice resting spot can also increase your chances of having a yard that will be frequented by a multitude of insects. Pick a sunny, sheltered spot and include a few flat stones or similar ornaments in the garden to create basking spots for butterflies. And think about adding a small birdbath or similar water source as a place for them to sit at. Your local garden centre also has butterfly and mason bee houses. Butterflies and other insects can be very entertaining to watch and are quite educational for children. So get your butterfly garden started right now and you might soon have a busy yard. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

YOUR CITY....

WORKING FOR YOU! 2013 PROPERTY TAX NOTICES

Property Tax Notices for the City of Cranbrook have now been mailed to all property owners on record. If you have not already received your notice, please contact City Hall at (250)-426-4211 so that a copy may be forwarded to you. Taxes are due on July 2, 2013, after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current taxes. Home Owner Grants may be claimed even if current taxes are not paid in full. Penalties apply to Home Owner Grants not claimed by July 2, 2013. If you are participating in the pre-authorized payment program, please note that the prepayment amount on your tax notice includes the May 15th and June 15th payments. As your prepayment amounts were based on an estimate there may still be a balance owing. To avoid a penalty, please review your Tax Notice carefully and make sure you pay any outstanding balance prior to July 2, 2013. To help you avoid the last minute rush, we accept post-dated cheques. We also accept Interac Debit Card payments. Payment may also be made by telephone/pc banking and through most financial institutions. You must still claim the Home Owner Grant at City Hall or online via the link on the www.cranbrook.ca website.

PREPAYMENT OF 2014 PROPERTY TAXES

The City of Cranbrook is continuing to offer a property tax prepayment plan. Now you can budget your property taxes and avoid the July property tax “blues”. Monthly tax payments are made through your bank by preauthorized debits on the 15th of each month, starting in July 2013 for the 2014 taxation year. Application forms are available from the City Hall Tax Department. If you would like one mailed, please contact us at (250)-426-4211. Funding drive for Canada Day celebration Submitted Planning for Canada Day celebrations in the City of Cranbrook is well underway, which will now include a fireworks show. The City had actively been approaching community groups to take over the planning and operations of the Canada Day celebrations since early in 2013. However, staff was not successful in finding a group to undertake this event. As such, Council approved a scaled down event with Leisure Services staff taking the lead in planning the event. The City is now moving forward with a proposal from Gord Felske to provide the fireworks display for July 1, 2013. Council has committed $2000 towards the fireworks celebration, and an additional $2500 towards a music and entertainment celebration at Rotary Park. The City has also received a Heritage Canada Day grant of $2500 to support the downtown celebration. As a result, Mr. Felske will be undertaking a fundraising campaign, on behalf of the City of Cranbrook, to undertake the fireworks display. “My goal is to raise at least $8000, but the more we raise, the bigger and better the show,” Felske says. Residents and businesses are advised that this is a legitimate fundraiser, supported by the City of Cranbrook and you may be approached for a donation to the fireworks display. Donations for the display will be held by the City. If you wish to make a donation to the Canada Day fireworks display, please drop them off at Cranbrook City Hall during regular business hours. Cheques can be made out to the City of Cranbrook. Once all the Canada Day events, locations and times are finalized the City will begin advertising to the public through the local media and on the City’s website – www.cranbrook. ca.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

Roxanne & Dave Kaiser, owner-operators of Cranbrook McDonald’s Restaurant; Nan Kennelly; Chris Sorenson, Cranbrook McDonald’s original owneroperator from 1974-1989; and Roger Rusnell, McDonald’s Supervisor, gathered at the restaurant on May 31st to say farewell to beloved McDonald’s employee Nan Kennelly who is retiring after 31 years. Nan was hired to work at the restaurant in September 1981 by her future son-in-law, Murray Vogt, who was a manager at the time. Several of her children also worked by her side during her career at McDonald’s. At 82, she is well-deserving of retirement but she will be greatly missed by all the McDonald’s morning regulars as well as her fellow employees. Nan was a faithful worker, always prompt, friendly and loyal, and a great example to her younger coworkers. Thanks, Nan, for almost 32 years of great service at McDonald’s!

Bellies to Babies program gets support from family and Superstore Submitted EKFH’s Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care has benefited from some amazing gifts and traditions over the years. One such tradition is that of

a family who regularly tries to surprise their dad, sister or brother with a gift to a charity that showcases the interest of the individual. EKFH was pleased to manage the family’s donation with a spe-

cific gift to Bellies to Babies Program. The program is a pregnancy and family resource program that serves the communities of Cranbrook and Kimberley, and the surrounding area. Part of the pro-

gram includes providing access to the use of infant car seats which became the surprise gift for this EKFH donor whose desire was to purchase three infant car seats with their 2012 Starlite gift.

“When we started looking to purchase the car seats, the program coordinator Pat Chisholm was doubly blessed when she met Dave Thomson, Store Manager for the Real Canadian Superstore,” explains Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. After hearing the good news story of the donor, Dave and the team at the Real Canadian Superstore put in an extra effort to provide four car seats at the same cost as the donor’s gift and then threw in a special surprise of a complimentary convertible car seat that can be used from infancy through to toddler age. Support for the East Kootenay Foundation for Health takes many forms whether it is a financial donation, gift in kind, volunteering for one of its projects or events and sometimes linking interest groups together. To learn more about our mission and the work of the foundation visit us at www.ekfh.ca.

Brought to you by Bill Bennett, MLA. (Kootenay East) Province of British Columbia

3 Facts you need to Know About... Northern Gateway Pipeline... 1.

BC cannot support Enbridge’s current proposal for a heavy oil pipeline across our province: http:// www.news.gov.bc.ca/ (“BC Makes Final Written Argument”). However, this is not the end of the discussion about oil pipelines in BC – it’s more like the beginning.

2.

Premier Christy Clark made it clear a year ago that five conditions must be met before BC can support an oil pipeline: http://www.newsroom. gov.bc.ca/2012/07/ british-columbia-outlinesrequirements-for-heavyoil-pipeline-consideration. html. Unless these conditions are met, we will not support the project.

3.

BC is a world leader in the production and transportation of natural gas. Oil pipelines present special, expensive environmental risks to the Province. We’re not categorically against oil pipelines, but the risk must be managed adequately and British Columbians must receive some benefit. Taking Action on Water Quality Teck operates five steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley which employ over 4,000 people. We raise our families in the valley, fish and swim in the river and care deeply about ensuring the environment is protected. That’s why we’re taking action to ensure that water quality is protected in the valley now and for generations to come.

The Challenge Mining generates large quantities of leftover rock that contains naturally occurring substances such as selenium. Water from rain and runoff flows through these rock piles and carries selenium and other substances, such as nitrate, into local waters. If present in high enough concentrations in the watershed, those substances can adversely affect aquatic health.

A Strategy to Protect Water Quality Our proposed water quality management strategy includes investing up to $600 million over five years for construction of water treatment plants, research and development, and ongoing monitoring. Our first water treatment plant is already under construction at our Line Creek Operations. This strategy builds on the steps we have taken over the years to address water quality, including studies, construction of water diversions and establishing the Strategic Advisory Panel on Selenium Management.

Fish Health and Human Health Aquatic Health: Monitoring and scientific studies show that selenium is below levels that would affect populations of fish and other sensitive animals and plants in the main stem of the Elk River and the Fording River below Josephine Falls. Monitoring does indicate some localized effects to sensitive insect larvae that live on stream bottoms, mainly in the tributaries closest to mining activities, but overall larval insect communities throughout most of the Elk Valley are healthy and diverse.

Creating the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan Together The B.C. Government has created guidelines for development of an Elk Valley Water Quality Plan to address water quality issues. We will consult extensively and work with communities, government, Indigenous Peoples and stakeholders to create this plan. The Elk Valley Water Quality Plan will set target levels for selenium, cadmium, nitrate and sulphate, as well as calcite formation. Water treatment technologies and strategies already developed by Teck will help in the development of the new plan. Timeline for the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan: Spring 2013: Develop terms of reference

2013–2014: Consultation and development of plan

Spring 2014: Submit final plan to province

Throughout: Implement solutions to protect water quality

Human Health: Monitoring indicates that there are elevated levels of selenium in some fish; however, the average selenium level in fish muscle tissue from the Elk River and lower Fording River is below the level of concern for even frequent fish consumers. Selenium levels in municipal drinking water sources in the valley are also below Health Canada and B.C. drinking water guidelines and are not a human health concern.

Get Involved We will be consulting and working with people throughout the region to finalize the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. To learn more and provide your feedback and suggestions, go to www.teck.com/ElkValley or call 1-855-806-6854.
