The 100 Mile House & District Soccer Association fell just short of its goal of 300 test drives for the Ford of Canada Drive 4UR Community fundraiser on June 1. Had they reached their goal, Sunrise Ford of 100 Mile would have matched Ford of Canada’s $6,000 contribution.

Fundraiser falls short of goal Arlene Jongbloets Free Press

The 100 Mile House & District Soccer Association held its biggest fundraiser of the year – Drive 4 UR Community, on June 1. While it raised approximately $5,100 for the club, the total is disappointingly short of what was possible, says Werner Heine, association sponsorship and communications director. Ford of Canada donated $20 for every person who test drove

a Ford at the six-hour long event, which took place in the Save-OnFoods parking lot. There were approximately 255 test drives made, but if the golden number of 300 had been reached, Sunrise Ford owner Leon Chretien would have kicked in a matching $6,000 donation, for a total $12,000 for the association. “Our hearts were broken when we didn’t reach that goal,” says Heine. He adds support from the general public was good, but the club

Looking Ahead: local food production, food security

Great lineup of speakers for one-day future food security conference Looking Ahead is a one-day conference on local food security that will be held at Martin Exeter Hall in 100 Mile House on June 15. Organizers have lined up an impressive list of speakers for the event. • Keynote speaker Maury Mason opens the conference by sharing stories, insights and knowledge drawn from his wide range of experience working as a Greenpeace director in the 1970s’, which was the start of the environmental movement. He is the founder and first president of Earth Day Canada and Earth Day International, the Alaska Wildlife Alliance executive director and has leadership roles in several non-profit organizations, including former vice-president of Canadian Organic Growers. His presentation, entitled Cultivating Change, features an overview of the current Global Food Production/Distribution System and what it means to residents of the 100 Mile House area. • Kathy Provost and

Nicole Chayka are South Cariboo Sustainability Society board members and campaign managers for the Rebel Garden Zone, which is a grassroots food security movement from Lac la Hache to Lac des Roches determined to secure food sovereignty by asking everyone to band together and grow food in their gardens this year. They will be explaining their mission statement: “Be a Rebel. Plant a Seed,” leading to a resurgence in old/new homesteading skills. • Richard Case, MSc RP from Williams Lake, immigrated to rural British Columbia to practise hands on selfsufficient living on a small farm in Beaver Valley. He will give a talk on Transition Towns: what is driving the movement; the extent and history of movement around the world; why localization and resilience thinking; what is happening in Williams Lake, local projects and ideas; developing community resilience (self-sufficien-

She has devoted her time to creating an Organic Heirloom Vegetable and Herb Garden and has been adapting seed from the 1790s to 1900s that have been grown in Europe and the Americas. These varieties have been adapted to zones 2 and 3 and she offers them for sale. Her talk entitled, Our Gold is Our Land, is about starting now to have your food in the future. She emphasizing the importance of growing our own food, being self-sufficient and ways to store and preserve food. • Cheryl Thomas from Clearwater is a board member of the BC Food Systems Network and the BC Rural Network. She is also a director of the North Thompson Food Action Committee, which promotes education about local food production.

Her talk will be about advocating for people to “think like a network.” • Robert Nichol from 70 Mile House will be the moderator for the event. A longtime advocate for smallscale farming, Robert started community supported agriculture on the Sunshine Coast and was a co-founder, along with Robin Wheeler, and first vice-president of One Straw Society, a sustainable food movement group. A filmmaker with 30 productions to his credit, he has produced three films on farming. His first, for the National Film Board, on the decline of the family farm, was instrumental in having federal laws changed to support small farms. In 2010, he was contracted by the federal government to author a major research paper, entitled Betting The Farm” on the state of agriculture in Canada. His major premise was to put an emphasis on small, local and organic

British Columbia adds new area code: 236

In response to the increasing demand for new phone numbers in British Columbia, The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) added a new area code to all of B.C. On June 1, the new area code,

236, will ensure B.C. residents and businesses continue to have enough phone numbers. Individuals do not need to change their existing phone number, and in areas where there is still a sufficient supply of 604, 778 and

250 numbers, they will continue to be given out as long as they are available. Where they are no longer available or where a customer chooses, after June 1, people and businesses receiving a new phone number may get one

Marmot golfers support new club format Arlene Jongbloets Free Press

Marmot Ridge Ladies’ Golf Club had a good turnout on May 29, with 58 golfers. Low score winner was Linda Hames with 39, and high score went to Patti Randle. Nancy Wilson and Gisela Neuber shared the birdie pot and Becky Pincott landed the short drive on hole No. 2. Long-drive prizes went to Alix Patterson and Darlene Wieduwilt, and long putts were dropped by Cecile Pratt and Odette Guimond. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Dee Orango, Deb Runge, Susan Kruse and Deb Turner. The club is trying a new format this year and members golf each

Wednesday, but only gather for dinner and prizes at the end of each

month. May 29 was the first dinner and prize night and it was con-

sidered a success, with nearly all of the club members turning out.

DID YOU KNOW: Cataracts

A cataract is any clouding or opacity in the crystalline lens - the transparent lens inside the eye. Most cataracts develop as part of the aging process. Optometrists feel that prolonged exposure (over years) to sunlight can damage the lens and plays a role in cataract development. Sunglasses are an effective way of slowing the long-term progress of most cataracts.

with the 236 code. Timing and availability of phone numbers with the new area code will vary by community, depending upon the local inventory and demand. The geographic boundaries that govern long distance calling will not be affected. The Western Telecommunications Alliance, a group of Canada’s major tele-

communications companies, is working to inform all customers and businesses about the additional area code. To ensure a seamless transition to adding the new area code, 236, businesses are encouraged to begin making any necessary changes right away by reprogramming communications systems and equipment. For

example, businesses that restrict long distance calls will need to reprogram their equipment to accept the 236 area code as local. Residential customers will not need to make any changes to their equipment. Three-digit numbers such as 211, 311, 411, 611 and 911 emergency services will not be affected.

Grape Galore brings home gold

5

Carole Rooney Free Press

The owners of Grapes Galore in 100 Mile House have once again won several medals at the International W i n e m a k e r s Competition, among more than 4,500 entries. While the judging for this year’s competition took place in Vermont, the subsequent awards ceremony was held in Monterey, California on May 18. It was the first ceremony attended by Grapes Galore owners Callie McHarg and Sharon Brooks, although they have entered wines in three annual competitions, and won medals before. “Sharon and I were flabbergasted as usual. We are always actually amazed when we win anything,” says McHarg. About 500 people were there to hear the winning wines entered in 50 different categories, where kit wines competed alongside fresh-grape entries in a blind tasting by judges. McHarg says they took home three gold medals, three silver and two bronze. One of the gold medals was for a Breezin’ Blackberry wine in the Sparkling Non-Grape category. “That was really exciting. That was made from blackberries a customer brought in from their sister-in-law’s farm.” The rest of the wines they entered were made from kits sold at the store, she explains. 4,564 entries, an event record, were judged April 19-21. These were submitted from entrants in nine countries, 50 American states and eight Canadian provinces, with 923 wine categories judged over 2,282 hours. Entries were awarded gold, silver, bronze and best of show medals based on the average score given by the judging panel, resulting in several medal winners in each category. Usually the trip is unaffordable for them,

Grapes Galore owners Sharon Brooks, left, and Callie McHarg display the gold, silver and bronze medals they won for their wines and ports at the recent International Winemakers Competition. The business partners travelled to Monterey, California to receive the awards on May 18.

McHarg notes, but this time they were able to use reward miles accumulated from the business to cover the costs. The other two gold medals were Speciality Toasted Caramel Port 2012, which she says is “yummy,” and won among 204 Entries; and a Carmenere 2012 red table wine blend made from Chilean imported juice. McHarg’s and Brook’s Specialty Coffee Port, Kahlua flavoured, won a silver medal, as did a Gewürztraminer 2012 made with imported German juice, and a Cabernet Sauvignon 2012.

Bronze medals were awarded to their Valpolicella Ripassa and Gewürztraminer 2012.

Hospital auxiliary looking for members At its May meeting, the 100 Mile District General Hospital Auxiliary hosted a presentation by members of the 100 Mile District Hospice and Palliative Care Society. Auxiliary president Ruth Kachur says about 30 people attended the meeting, including one member’s husband and two guests brought by another member. These two ladies indicated they would likely be joining the auxiliary in the fall, she added. Kuchar says auxiliary membership is open to anyone, but there is criteria for new members. “They must attend three meetings before they can work in the gift shop. However, we have a few members who do not work in the gift shop, so this is not mandatory for all new members, only for those who work the shop.” Membership is only $10 a year, so it is very reasonable. Meetings are always the

first Wednesday of each month, except July and August. Meetings are usually held in the Multipurpose Room at the hospital unless the room is needed for something else, and then they generally use the Mill Site Board Room. “People can come to a meeting to see what we are all about, and if they wish to join, there are a few forms to be filled in.” She notes that in recent years, the auxiliary membership has increased dramatically. About 12 years ago, there were around 16 members and now there are more than 30, she adds. “Our main function is raising money to buy equipment for the hospital. We are currently fundraising to help purchase a cardiac heart monitor. There is a list of about six pages in the gift shop, indicating all the items the auxiliary has purchased over the years.

“We liaise with the hospital board and it provides us with a “wish list,” from which we decide what we can purchase that year.” Kachur notes the auxiliary has furnished a room for out patients who need to rest while undergoing treatment and have supplied drapes for a room. The gift shop carries a wide range of items, many of them donated, including handmade baby outfits, afghans, slippers, books magazines, candy and pop. Many people come to the shop just to buy the baby outfits, she adds. “We also have handmade sweaters in many sizes and colours for children.” Auxiliary members also take the cart around the hospital in the afternoons to supply items for patients who are bedridden. For more information about joining the auxiliary, call Kachur at 250-395-1163 or e-mail her at w.i._ruth@telus.net.

WEEK OF JUNE 9 TO JUNE 15, 2013

Listen to the

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 You could be feeling under the weather this week, Aries. Even if your to-do list is a mile long, you need to take time to recuperate before getting back to business.

‘Fry Guy’

Mornings: 10am - 12 noon …and look for him around the Cariboo this summer!

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Life experience is your advantage, Taurus. When your company is looking to fill a position, they will most likely hire from within. Make the most of this opportunity. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, just when things seem hopeless, a small ray of light shines through and you find a solution to your problem. Scorpio has some wise words, so listen up. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, once you think you have all of the answers, something pops up to make you reassess a situation. It could take a few days for you to find the answer. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you may have fun in the sun on your mind, but others are urging you to buckle down and focus on some tasks that need to get wrapped up before you leave. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 There are some changes coming at work, Virgo. You just don’t know if they will be to your advantage or be something that could tilt you off your axis. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you have much to learn, but you cannot cram it all into one week. There is no crash course on life. Make the most of a getaway opportunity. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 You can’t seem to focus on one thing for very long this week, Scorpio. You might have to spend a few days clearing your mind so you can refocus on tasks at hand.

10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this!
