Ring Road for 24 hours in July. “The motivation (when riding for so long) is just thinking about the kids. Think about the 24 hours that they’ve got to stay up when they can’t sleep because they’re in so much pain from their chemotherapy treatment,” Nunn said. Blackhall, 20, says he’s remembering his grandmother, who died from cancer, and young niece as motivation. While his two-anda-half-year-old niece isn’t battling cancer, he knows it’s a disease that doesn’t discriminate.

Eric Ages used to cherish his early-morning rowing sessions along the Gorge waterway. The slack tide at that hour creates a glassy surface in the protected inlet and provides one of the few year-round outdoor training sites in Canada. But lately, as he slips into a rowing shell underneath the Selkirk trestle, Ages prepares for an increasingly common sight in the stillness of the surrounding waters: human excrement. “I first noticed it last year,” said Ages, an administrator with GO Rowing and Paddling Association. “There’s no other explanation for what we’ve seen except human waste.” He points to a collection of about 20 boats across the inlet, many of them permanently anchored, as the source of the raw sewage. Three vessels are tied together in a makeshift fashion, while another has an old Mexican blanket draped across the cabin door. “And those boats sometimes drift. In the last month, we’ve had three rowing shells collide with boats that have drifted into our paths,” he said. The small village of boats has flourished thanks to a jurisdictional smorgasbord that exists northwest of the Selkirk Trestle.

New extremes for cancer fundraiser Tour de Rock members plan 24-hour ride around UVic’s Ring Road in July Kyle Slavin News staff

Kevin Nunn is no stranger to pushing himself to the extreme, all for the sake of improving the lives of kids with cancer. The 50-year-old civilian quartermaster for the Saanich Police Department raised more than $45,000 in 2011 and 2012 by pushing

his body to its limits – a run from Duncan to Saanich, and walking a half-marathon pulling a BMW Mini – to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society’s Tour de Rock. This year Nunn was named to the 2013 Tour de Rock team, and he and three of his fellow riders have decided to take their fundraising efforts another step further. “To keep the extreme going, I think a 24-hour bike ride is, again, well out there,” Nunn said. He, along with Saanich cops Lisa Bruschetta and Doug Franklin, and Oak Bay reserve constable Aubrey Blackhall, will ride nonstop around the University of Victoria’s

The former roommate of a Vic High school teacher accused of criminal harassment says allegations against Frank Canacari are true. He knows them to be true because Canacari openly talked about breaking into two women’s apartments, taking items and sending harassing phone calls and emails, Terry Bogue testified on Tuesday in Victoria provincial court. Canacari faces two counts of criminal harassment and two counts of unlawfully being in a dwelling house related to a woman in Esquimalt and a woman in Saanich. Bogue said despite not having lived together more than a few weeks in March 2010, Canacari would share with him the ongoing details while stalking two women he dated. Bogue told the court that Canacari said he got one woman’s address by going into her purse and getting her driver’s licence. He went over to her house when it was vacant, entered through an open door and took photos inside her home. He then came home and showed Bogue the photos. “Why would Mr. Canacari show you this?” asked Crown prosecutor Chandra Fisher.

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF

Sailors host special kids

Edward Hill

Sailors from HMCS Malahat again supported Variety’s Boat for Hope, an annual day of fun at sea for children who have special needs last weekend. More than 250 children enjoyed a pirate-themed day on the water during the “fun-raising” event. Local community skippers volunteered their time and boats to take the families on a treasure hunt through Victoria’s Inner Harbour. More than a dozen naval reservists entertained the children during their wait to board the boats. The children also enjoyed friendly water fights with the sailors onboard the Orcaclass patrol vessel berthed at Ship Point marina, before returning ashore to enjoy more interaction with the sailors and at land-based festivities.

ith little fanfare at the end of March, a one-storey tall microscope housed in a vault beneath the University of Victoria zapped a fleck of gold, and produced the world’s most highly magnified image. The nondescript shot of gold atoms proved what engineering professor Rodney Herring had hoped – his scanning transmission electron holography microscope (STEHM) was indeed the most powerful in the world. Herring’s breakthrough is monumental in terms of fundamental science in Canada, although the margin of victory is exceedingly small. The STEHM has resolved an image at 34 picometres, Herring says, beating out a 49-picometre image from the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory in California. A picometre is a trillionth of a metre, and a gold atom is about 332 picometres in diametre. “For me it was a relief. I’d been telling everybody this could potentially have the best resolution and be the most powerful microscope in the world. But it wasn’t proven yet,” Herring said. “Now we’ve got information down to 34 picometres and we aren’t done yet. We are still tuning the lab.” The ultra-magnified image of gold, on the order of 20 million times human sight, has yet to be published in a scientific journal, but Herring plans to present his work at an electron microscope conference at UVic this month. The UVic microscopy lab plans to launch the machine on June 17. Whether the lab will have the machine fully ready for researchers remains to be seen. It had planned to open the STEHM last fall or winter, but its assembly and calibrations have been so maddeningly complicated, bringing it into operation has taken until now. Hitachi High-Technologies built most of the machine components in Japan, and Hitachi engineer David Hoyle has overseen the assembly at UVic. “This project was so difficult Hitachi said it doesn’t want to build another one any day soon, so this will be the only one for 10 years or more,” Herring said. “It is a unique

UVic engineering professor Rodney Herring shows the electron microscope he designed, and which in March created the highest resolution image yet, on the order of the fraction of the width of an atom. The microscope is considered the most powerful in the world. machine. “We don’t know how good it is yet. We are in the training phase, the playing phase. We have to get used to it and find out how well it will do.” UVic microscopy lab manager and biology professor Elaine Humphries is aiming to have the lab accepting researchers this summer, although they’ll need to tidy up the space, buy furniture and install workstations. They want to keep costs low for visiting scientists booking time on the STEHM. “We want more researchers, we want to make it easy to use and cost effective,” Humphries

said. “For me, more researchers means more grants means more upgrades.” She remarked that despite it being 4.5 metres tall, seven tonnes and effectively the most stable machine ever assembled, it is delicate and off limits to all but two or three people. “My job is to make it simple so people don’t screw up the microscope. If you don’t put the specimen in right, it will be down for eight hours.” The machine itself is crammed with components that are among the most advanced technology in the world. Its electron gun can spit out single electrons at a time, or

send them down in a spiral pattern through its 65 lenses (also a world record), allowing the machine to “pick up” and manipulate atoms one at a time. The electron beam moves through a 1.5 metre chamber with a vacuum nearly equivalent to deep space. The moon has more of an atmosphere. Materials used to achieve this are a trade secret. “One problem with electrons is they don’t go through air easily. They get bounced around so you have to pump the air out. So a better vacuum means better resolution,” Humphries said. The machine also exploits weird quantum properties of particles – wires called bi-prisms can “split” single electrons into two pieces, since particles also exist as waves. “From a physics point of view, it’s the perfect machine to study the structure of the atom,” Herring said. “There’s lots of mystery left with atoms.” The machine rests on a concrete foundation separate from the Bob Wright Centre in an overpressured, vibration absorbing chamber. Proprietary metal-composite technology in the machine also dampens any and all external noise from passing cars to passing clouds. Chemistry professor Alex Brolo oversees nano technology development related to items like medical sensors and solar cells at UVic, and said the STEHM will be critical in creating more precise devices. “It’s a big advantage for us looking at nano materials and looking at the position of atoms. This microscope increases that capability and does things we weren’t able to do before,” Brolo said. For Herring, the project has been a decade of pulling together at least $20 million in funding and convincing industry partners that the machine was technically possible – many were convinced it wasn’t. Gleaming and tall, with a few inches to spare in the vault, he’s proud of the machine he designed. “It’s taken 11 years. It’s beautiful. For me it’s a work of beauty,” he said. “It’s performed beyond expectations. All of the effort has paid off with an ultra-high resolution, 34-picometre (machine). We have the best microscope in the world.” editor@saanichnews.com

New cellphone code caps roaming fees, early exit Code to take effect in December Jeff Nagel Black Press

Consumer advocates are applauding a new wireless code of conduct that lets Canadians cancel mobile phone contracts without penalty after two years and sets caps on data roaming charges. The new code, unveiled Monday by federal regulators, applies on new contracts for mobile phones and other devices starting Dec. 2. Besides the ability to escape three-year contracts without fees after two years, the new CRTC rules cap data overage fees at $50 a month and national and international data roaming fees at $100 a month, unless the user explicitly wants to use more. “Canadians may finally now be freed of the worst of cellphone bill shock,” Public Interest Advocacy Centre executive director John Lawford said. “We hope that consumers will now be able to enjoy their wireless service fully and without fear.” He said the code should reduce the mobile device costs of many users. “It also makes it easier to switch

companies because those costs are limited and are clear,” Lawford said. Individuals and small business users will also be able to have their phones unlocked after 90 days or immediately if they paid the full price. A 15-day return option is also promised to those who are unhappy with service, along with an easyto-read contract and an ability to accept or decline key changes to a contract. “The wireless code will contribute to a more dynamic marketplace by making it possible for Canadians to discuss their needs with service providers at least every two years,” CRTC chair Jean-Pierre Blais said. It’s not yet clear how major phone companies will react to the new rules. “We already do a lot of what is in the new code,” Telus spokesman Shawn Hall said in an emailed statement. He said Telus replaced contract cancellation charges with a device balance some years ago and already offers phone unlocking and a cap on international data roaming. “We are thus well positioned to support this new code,” Hall said, calling it “a strong and friendly set of protections.” editor@vicnews.com

Priest to be sentenced in July Kyle Slavin News staff

The former Saanich priest who was found guilty earlier this year of touching a young person for a sexual purpose will learn his fate in July. A date for Phil Jacobs’ final court appearance was set last Wednesday. He will appear in court for sentencing on July 19. Justice Miriam Gropper handed down her guilty verdict on Feb. 25. The guilty charge stems from a witness who testified that during tutoring sessions at Jacobs’ house on the school grounds, he ended up in a position of laying on the couch with his legs over Jacobs’ lap. During testimony in December, the witness told the court that Jacobs’ right hand would slide up and down the witness’s left thigh over his pants – “he went from my knee to my groin back and forth ... the back of his hand touched my genitals.” Gropper agreed with the Crown’s assertion that Jacobs’ touching of the victim’s genitals was “deliberate,” and not accidental brushing. The court ordered a

psychiatric risk assessment on Jacobs, which must be complete before sentencing. Jacobs was a priest at St. Joseph the Worker

parish in Saanich from 1997 and 2002. During the trial in Victoria he admitted to inappropriate touching of young boys in Ohio

‘Jurisdictional clouds’ hang over a solution to boat problem Continued from Page A1

The provincial government owns the sea bed, while the federal government retains responsibility for navigable water regulations and marine habitat in the area. On either side, Vic West and Burnside-Gorge community associations funnel complaints about abandoned or polluting boats to the City of Victoria, who themselves have long been looking for federal action on the matter. On Thursday, councillors reviewed a staff report that attempts to cut through the buck-passing and provide the city with a feasible action plan. “This is not something the city is anxious to leap into,” said acting mayor Geoff Young before the meeting. “And if the federal government were prepared to enforce the requirements with regards to discharge of sewage and interference with other vessels, we’d be happy to let them do so.” Instead, Young suggests

Boats moored at Selkirk Trestle. the city may have to look to a third party, such as the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority or a private marina operator, to avoid ballooning cost estimates. The third party could develop regulations and monitor compliance for anchored boats while consulting with the marine community, he said. But first, the city needs to sort out a lease with the province and enforcement options with Transport Canada, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and possibly even the

Canadian Coast Guard. “Our staff is very concerned about the costs, as I am,” Young said. The CRD will be circulating a public questionnaire throughout the summer about all five harbour areas in the region to ask residents what they value, how they use the spaces and what concerns they have about future development. The city, for its part, will continue to play musical chairs with various federal departments while it looks for a way to keep the Gorge from returning to its former polluted state. “I realize there are jurisdictional clouds hanging over this body of water, but it’s our hope the City of Victoria will take swift action to resolve this,” Ages said. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Public invited to ride with Tour riders Continued from Page A1

Thank you for making miracles happen for BC’s kids. With enthusiastic support from team members, suppliers and customers, Overwaitea Food Group has raised over $18 million for BC Children’s Hospital, leading the way as one of the hospital’s most significant corporate supporters for over 26 years.

“This is my insurance policy if she ever does happen to get stricken with cancer. I’d like to know that I fought for her even before she needed it,” Blackhall said. The day-long ride will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 26 and end at 1 p.m. the following the day. Nunn says the public is invited to come out and ride alongside the Tour de Rock team. “We’re wanting people to come and join us and cycle with us. If you do a lap, we’d like a donation of $5. If you want to ride for an hour, we’d like a donation of $25 per hour that you ride,” he said. While each team member sets their own personal fundraising goal, Nunn says the goal of the 24-hour ride is “as much as possible. Every penny counts.” Twenty-four-hour rides aren’t so much a Tour tradition, but they do happen every couple of years – so long as there are riders who have enough stamina and endurance to take up the challenge. Last year two Sidney-based riders raised more than $6,000 riding for 24 hours.

Nunn says he hasn’t pulled an all-nighter in at least a decade, since he was in the British Armed Forces. “I’ll hopefully try to get a few good nights sleep the nights leading up to the ride, eat well, train well, have lots of fluid on board and just focus on why I’m riding: the youngsters,” he said of his preparations. Blackhall says the Tour de Rock experience – mostly training – has been very positive so far. “It’s been great. I couldn’t ask for a better team. We’re getting more and more like family every day, and everyone’s here for such a good cause.” “The aches and pains of getting on a bike have nothing on the pain and experience that the youngsters go through when they’re going through cancer treatment,” added Nunn. “Kids should be kids. They should grow up being kids.” The Tour de Rock team is made up of Vancouver Island police officers, special guests and media members, including Black Press freelance reporter Arnold Lim. The 22-member team will cycle nearly 1,100 kilometres from Port Alice to Victoria this fall, raising money for pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for kids with cancer. kslavin@saanichnews.com

OUR VIEW

Derelict boats a regional issue Greater Victoria is blessed with many kilometres of coastline and as such, is home to a large number of pleasure craft. Over the years, some boat owners have chosen to take permanent or semi-permanent refuge in the protected waters in and around the Capital Region. Such spots as the Gorge and Selkirk waterways, Oak Bay and Thetis Cove in View Royal have been among the favoured spots for mariners looking to avoid moorage fees and, in some cases, enjoy free living space. When these boats have created problems, either by coming away from their anchorage in a storm or leaking mechanical fluids or bilge into the water, affected municipalities have struggled to find permanent answers to what has become an ongoing issue. Of late, rowers in the Selkirk waters in Victoria have noticed floating human excrement in the area, not to mention had occasion to dodge drifting boats for which no one appears to want to take responsibility. While the solution might appear simple on the surface – follow the trail and levy a fine, maybe even seize vessels – this case offers another example of jurisdictional paralysis. The City of Victoria, like all coastal municipalities, has little to no authority on the water. Worried about the cost of enforcing marine health and safety in the area, some councillors have suggested that a third party, such as the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, might be better suited to handle the task. Neither Transport Canada, which retains responsibility for enforcing navigable water regulations here, and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which oversees the marine habitat, seem to want to take the lead on the issue. They may be forced to clarify their policies before long. Victoria is fast tiring of having no jurisdictional teeth with which to deal with abandoned and derelict vessels. If and when this problem is solved, it will no doubt cause a ripple effect across the region, as other municipalities seek lasting solutions for dealing with problem vessels on their harbours and waterways. Ontario’s government plans to spend billions to expand its regional transit system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, under a plan called the Big Move. It’s also looking at new financing tools to ensure funding levels are adequate and continue into the future. But before we spend enormous amounts on improvements, we need to ensure projects contribute to a region-wide rapid transit network using the latest technology and adhering to the highest sustainability and costeffectiveness standards. That’s why a proposal to use diesel trains for the Air-Rail-Link plan to connect downtown Toronto with its international airport in Mississauga is concerning. Heavy diesel trains emit particulates and other contaminants, including known carcinogens. Numerous experts, including Toronto’s Medical Health Officer, have urged the Ontario government to abandon its diesel plan in favour of electric trains that could be better integrated into a region-wide rapid transit network. Vancouver, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and New York City have consistently ranked among the most livable cities on the continent, in part because they take the environment into account in planning decisions. They all have world-class public transit systems that move residents in a safe, affordable and sustainable way. davidsuzuki.org

LETTERS Mayor Leonard vs. Victoria police Re: VicPD accepts challenge (Guest column, May 31) Unfortunately in setting Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard straight on Victoria’s response to calls such as noisy parties, John Ducker supports the fallacy that funding is not in balance because Victoria has the troubled downtown activity that suburbs do not. But Victoria gets revenue from the properties and businesses that peddle booze to all comers. Why isn’t Victoria using those funds for the extra policing needed? By the way, Frank Leonard is also wrong on Victoria’s closing of neighbourhood police offices. I checked that the police office in the Esquimalt firehall is still open and staffed weekdays – live interacting people were there when I checked. Perhaps Leonard listened to Esquimalt politicians who cannot see the half block from City Hall to that police office, even with those quite visible Victoria police vehicles sometimes there. The big question is why voters elect stumbling politicians like Desjardins, Fortin, and Leonard, who are unwilling to perform their duty. The reason for government is protection of the individual. Police are the front line of that protection within country borders.

In digging into the bunfight, as you should, consider the possibility that many mayors and councils want power themselves instead of co-operation. On several subjects Frank Leonard seems to be pandering to those who almost defeated him in the last election. Puzzling. Keith Sketchley Saanich

City doesn’t need more cycle lanes Re: Spin City (News, May 31) It’s nice to think of Victoria as Cycle City, even though a very small proportion of our trips are made that way. Victoria does have a friendly climate, a street-car era “bones” for city design, making distances short for many from home to work, stores, etc. However, it gives me a pain to hear the likes of Brad Dellebuur, city transportation manager, or the cycling coalition, suggest that we just need more bike lanes, etc. to get people on two wheels. I have been cycling in this area for more than 45 years, with 35 years before that in various places in the U.S. I find few hinderances to cycling in the Greater Victoria area. Today, much of what I learned through experience can be taught through a course or reading, in a short time. One learns about

JUNECLEARANCE_VICTORIA_BLACKPRESS_JUNE13.indd 1

proper equipment, dress and road behaviour. When I compare cyclists with car and motorcycle drivers, both must learn to share the road safely. Car drivers and motorcyclists have to pass a test. The ignorant aren’t given a special lane to compensate for their ignorance. It’s time to stop the whining and make education more easily obtainable. Schools could stop wasting PE time on activities that have no adult carry-over and install bike courses instead. Safe cycling could be funded as an adult education offering. It’s true that there are a few changes to the road structure, etc., which might help, but just painting more bike lanes is not one. Robert McInnes Victoria

Giving voice to the cause In response to Don White’s letter about the fallacy of “greenest neighbourhood” (News, May 31) it would appear that he is not a believer in “every journey begins with a single step.” It is true he has no way of knowing all of the environmental practices of the Gordon Head-Oak Bay residents, however he comes across rather sanctimonious in his judgments of vehicles driven (weren’t they parked at the time of

observation?), water recovery (rain barrels may be in the back yard) and tidy yards (do push mowers mean an unkempt lawn?) etc. When electing a representative one looks not only in terms of being “one of us” but also leadership. Maybe the people confident enough to display an Andrew Weaver sign are looking for a leader to help them move forward in their quest to be more “green.” I think it would do the party a disservice to insist that only those who already live a more pronounced environmentally friendly lifestyle are allowed to openly show support for a Green candidate. If this is the case, the writer is correct in his prediction of “doom.” I did not vote for Andrew Weaver, but I appreciate the opportunity he provides in presenting alternate views in the legislature. Along with taking cues from the representative the voters have elected, perhaps the spotlight label of “greenest neighbourhood” will motivate all of us who live here to become more conscious of our personal affect on the environment. While maybe not yet the “greenest neighbourhood” in a practical sense, we are the neighbourhood most willing to give voice to the cause! Susan Henn Saanich

A group of middle-aged women posing naked for a calendar might not be what comes to mind when one thinks of a wildly successful pin-up shoot, but Calendar Girls at Langham Court Theatre is a play based on that very true story. Director Michael King says the show, running June 13 to 29, is a family friendly show that doesn’t contain nudity. “There is the scene where we do the calendar shoot, and in that scene the women on stage do not have their clothes on. But they are artfully concealed by a myriad of items,” he says. “The choreography of that scene was really hard … just making sure that from all angles of the audience the women aren’t exposed.” Calendar Girls tells the story of a group of friends from Yorkshire, England who produce a nude calendar as part of a fundraiser for a cancer ward at their area hospital. “The calendars they would do every year were photos of country churches and bridges – they never raised much money.

Cast members of Langham Court Theatre’s production of Calendar Girls get into the spirit of the story, which sees women publish a nude calendar as a fundraiser for a cancer ward in their local hospital in Yorkshire, England. When they decided to do a nude calendar, these women – who are all in their late 40s to mid 70s – ended up raising ($900,000),” King says. Casting Victoria-based actors in a show in which there would be covered nudity was

easier than the director expected. “I’ve never had so many women show up for an audition knowing that they were going to be taking their clothes off on stage,” he says. “We had 50 women show up for the audi-

tions. We have nine women in the show playing 10 female characters, and six of them actually take their clothes off.” The Langham Court production is based on the 2003 film of the same name, starring Helen Mirren. King says he never got around to watching the movie, and once he was tasked with directing the local stage version, he consciously avoided the film. “I guess i just wanted to put my own slant on it, and we’ll see what happens,” he says. The show is being advertised “for mature audiences” but King stresses the nudity is all tastefully covered. “Calendar Girls should not make anyone uncomfortable. It’s a light, funny show with some very endearing themes in it. “We’re talking about the loss of life and the loss of partners, but we’re also talking about the goods that can come out of that. These friends went out and did something about it and turned it into such an amazingly good thing. It’s a very positive story.” Calendar Girls shows at 8 p.m. at Langham Court Theatre (805 Langham Ct.) starting June 13. A pair of 2 p.m. matinees are scheduled for June 22 and 29. Tickets are $21 for adults, $19 for students and seniors. They are available, along with detailed schedule information, online at langhamtheatre.ca or by calling 250-384-2142. kslavin@saanichnews.com

United Way has achieved a number of significant strategic goals and are well positioned for the future,” board chair Peter Lockie said in a release. Working with staff, sponsors and the massive volunteer corps who spread the word about the organization and how it benefits vulnerable people and those in need was a great way to get to know the community, Hughes said. “This movement will remain in my heart, and I will continue to support the important work of United Way,” she said.

Take me out to the ballgame Players for the region’s newest baseball team, the Victoria HarbourCats, warm up and stretch before batting practice at Royal Athletic Park this week. The HarbourCats opened their inaugural season Wednesday with a game against the Kelowna Falcons. Breakers collect silver medal again Don Descoteau News staff

Losing the B.C. girls high school AAA soccer final 1-0 to perennial powerhouse Argyle Pipers was a bitter pill to swallow for the Oak Bay Breakers. Reflecting on her team’s performance this season and at last weekend’s provincial tournament in North Vancouver, however, Oak Bay co-captain Katie Hanson had nothing but admiration for her teammates. “I think this group is really special in the way everyone was able to commit entirely to the program and our main goal, which was to get to provincials,” the Grade 12 defender said. “I’m really proud of the way everyone competed and was committed.” As it was all season, the Breakers’ backline was a brick wall through the tournament, giving up just one goal in regulation or overtime. Grade 12s Hanson, Elise Butler and Jessie Collison – who played together since Grade 9 – and Grade 11 Sabine Boisvert drew the praise of coach Brent Garraway for their work ethic and leadership. “We make (the program) about way more than just the soccer. A big part of it is them maturing and growing up and learning life lessons,” he said. Tournament host Argyle Pipers scored around the 30-minute mark in the final, then went into shutdown mode. The Breakers had several scoring opportunities in the second half, including a two-on-none that saw Meghan Kivell’s attempted pass to a teammate intercepted by Pipers’ goalkeeper, Austin Studor, who was named tournament most valuable player. “We were in their end quite a bit and there were a lot of good chances,” Hanson said. “Their goalie just stood on her head.” It was the first time Oak Bay had reached the B.C. championship match since 2009, when the Breakers lost to North Van’s powerhouse, Handsworth. It was Oak Bay’s fourth silver medal in the past 10 years, during which the team has finished fourth or better five times. Butler and up-and-coming Grade 9 player Holly Goodacre scored in the Breakers’ 2-0 semifinal win over Kitsilano.

School is in session at PISE Sports school trains students with eye on elite competition Travis Paterson News staff

Mornings at school are a little different for Ben Goertzen than they are for his classmates at Pacific Christian School. That’s because the Grade 10 student doesn’t roll into PCS until around 10 a.m. For four of the five school days in a week, Goertzen joins 12 other Greater Victoria students to train at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence in the Canadian Sports School program. The time spent at PISE is credited towards their high school educations. Weightlifting, gymnastics and wind sprints dominate the classes, run by Olympic weightlifter Jeane Lassen. “I’ve seen major improvements in a lot of my life, not just (weightlifting),” said Goertzen, who plays second base for the Victoria Eagles of the B.C. Premier Baseball League. “On the diamond I’m faster and just feel all around stronger. Hopefully I can enroll again next year.” The program is open to elite-minded athletes from all disciplines and runs from September to June. Getting in is a process. Athletes submit a letter of intent and references from coaches before getting interviewed. The program is capped at 25 students, 13 in the morning and 12 in the afternoon, from Grades 10 to 12. “It’s for future Olympians

and international athletes, hopefully,” said Lassen, the class instructor. “Or any athletes who is highly dedicated.” Lassen represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was in London in 2012 but was injured. Instead, she assisted coaching staff helping teammate Christine Girard win bronze. She relocated to Victoria last year to run the program at PISE, which also trains members of the Boardworks diving club. “It’s a lot of technical coaching with weights but there’s also a classroom component,” Lassen said. “Guest speakers, including many Olympians, routinely talk to the students about sports psychology, nutrition and dedication.” Gymnastics and sprints are each once a week while weights are a main focus. “The reason we do weights is because we find the kids don’t have the core strength (at the higher percentiles). It’s also very technical. They do a lot without the weight to build the memory of doing it correctly. Later they can continue to add weight,” Lassen said. What’s remarkable is how well the training transfers to various sports. Grade 10 swimmers Sarah Mabee-Hall and Maddie Powell of Claremont secondary attend. So do Grade 12 Claremont rower Ali Zwicker and Grade 12 Spectrum community school rower Katie Griffin. “It’s not just in the amount of power I put out (while rowing), but the strength also helps with balancing the fine movements that are so important with rowing,” Zwicker said. Same goes for Mabee-Hall, a national level swimmer at just

15 years old. Mabee-Hall qualified for the senior national swimming championships in July, hitting the standard for the 1,500metre. But she has yet to specialize on a particular distance for competition and feels the difference in all areas of swimming, short and long course, she said. “A high-speed tennis serve has been measured as the

equivalent force used in a 75-kilogram jerk (in weightlifting)” Lassen said. “Often people are concerned about young athletes weightlifting but done properly it’s low risk and highly beneficial. “The techniques of lifting are good life skills to have, whether you’re lifting furniture or getting back up from a tackle during a game.” sports@vicnews.com

go to Simpson-Sears in suburban Vancouver. This one day they had a row of go-carts in the parking lot,” he recalls. “They cost $200 and that wasn’t going to happen.” But on the way home, Al’s dad cruised the car lots along Kingsway where he found a top-line 1950 Austin Devon with leather seats and a sunroof for $50. He bought the car and later drove it home for his son to use. “There was 105 acres to drive around on our farm and I used the car for two years before selling it for $35,” Al says. When he was 16 and the family had relocated to a farm in the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver,

he was able to buy a dark blue 1953 Mercury pickup. The motor was shot. But his father saw an ad in the local newspaper for a wrecked 1950 Ford that had a newly rebuilt engine. His father bought the car with its rebuilt engine for a song and Al spent the winter working on the truck inside the barn which was kept warm by the cows. “I installed the rebuilt motor, which ran perfectly, painted the truck and the interior and installed snap on whitewall tires,” he says. I drove that pickup truck to high school.” Al retired as a telephone installer 11 years ago and now helps other people with their restorations, including body work and paint as well as his year-round volunteer work for the Coastal Swap Meet.

After restoring the 1937 Dodge, he applied his talents to restoring a 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 hardtop and a 1964 Comet Caliente convertible. He gets a lot of his parts as well as information to do his restorations at swap meets. The Fiat 500L lands on North American shores May 10, ready for their trip to the coasts of America. Production of the North American 500L model began at Kragujevac, the largest car factory in South-East Europe, in March. Fiat Automobiles Serbia (FAS) plans to produce between 110,000 and 150,000 units in 2013 to satisfy demand from more than 100 markets around the world, including North America, Asia and the Pacific region, where the Fiat 500L model is about to be launched. The car can be described as Fiat’s ‘City Lounge’ as it effectively combines characteristics you would normally

On May 23, a ship carrying the first 3,000 Fiat 500L units for the North American market docked in the port of Baltimore to unload its first consignment. The vessel then set sail for the Canadian port of Halifax where it completed the delivery of the remainder of its cargo on May 26. The 3,000 cars were first taken by train from the Kragujevac plant in Serbia to the port of Bar in Montenegro, where they were loaded on

consider to be mutually incompatible: the compact external dimensions typical of the B segment, with the performance, generous interior and rich equipment typical of the C segment. All this comes at an accessible city-car price and with added value not found elsewhere: the distinctive personality of the Fiat 500, a real Italian design icon. The 3,000 Fiat 500L units shipped to North America are equipped with the brand new 160 HP 1.4 MultiAir Turbo engine. This engine has been specially

developed for the North American market and boasts the highest specific power, highest absolute power in its class. It is available with a manual, six-speed gearbox or six-speed dual dry clutch automatic transmission – another exclusive for this class of engine – so the North American Fiat 500L delivers excellent performance and great driving pleasure. These enviable characteristics are made even more interesting by typical European handling and precise, responsive steering.

Chevrolet Cruze Diesel sets highway fuel consumption benchmark The new 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel delivers an industry best 4.2L/100km highway – better than any non-hybrid passenger car in Canada. It will be available across Canada this spring. With a starting price of just $24,945, plus $1,550 destination charge, Chevrolet claims it is a better value than a similarly equipped VW Jetta TDI automatic.

Compared with Jetta, the Cruze Diesel offers standard equipment including the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-appointed seating, and a longer five-year 160,000-kilometre powertrain limited warranty. Cruze Diesel also beats its rivals in performance with a segment-leading estimated 148 hp and estimated 258 lb/ft of torque, and can go 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in about 8.6 seconds. Its advanced 2.0-litre turbo diesel

engine has an overboost feature capable of increasing torque to an estimated 280 lb/ft for short bursts of stronger acceleration when needed, such as entering freeway traffic. The vehicle generates 90 per cent less Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions when compared to previous generation diesels. Chevrolet has sold more than two million Cruze models globally since it was launched in mid-2010. More than 33,000 of those were diesel powered.

The Chevrolet Cruze turbo diesel gets 4.2L/100 km highway, giving it what Chevrolet claims is the best mileage of any non-hybrid passenger car sold in Canada.

Two identically prepared SRT Viper GTS-Rs will return to the Le Mans stage June 22 and 23 – the first time since finishing one-two in the GTS class three consecutive years – 1998-2000. SRT Motorsports accepted an invitation in February from ACO to field the two-car team in the LM GTE Pro class. “Racing is a cornerstone of Viper’s illustrious history,” said Ralph Gilles, President and Chief Executive Officer – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports (SRT), Chrysler Group LLC. “Le Mans is a world stage. The GTS-R has enjoyed great success at Le Mans in the past and we’re excited to start a new chapter of Viper racing at that historic venue.” The festive atmosphere and famous location of the semipermanent racecourse southwest of Paris is a perfect international stage for the SRT brand. The Viper hasn’t been on the Le Mans stage since 2000 but the SRT Motorsports team has a good idea what to expect. They attended the race last year to formulate a plan should an invitation come.
