Dark Knight rejected SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Holy prom suit, Batman! A Grade 12 student at Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Secondary is seeing stars after finding out he’s not allowed to wear an expensive Batman costume to prom. Lance Scott has been planning for months to ditch the tux in favour of wearing a $500 latex Dark Knight costume to his prom on Friday, June 28. “I just kind of got the idea and I thought, well, why not? Everyone wants to be Batman,” Lance told The Townsman when he came into the office in costume to talk about the situation. “I searched online and found the suit. It’s a collector’s edition. Then it just became a reality.” The costume arrived a month ago, and Lance has taken it out for a couple of spins around the neighbourhood to test it out – getting a few strange looks in the process. “I went for a walk in it yesterday and it was really hot,” he said. Lance’s prom date is completely on side with his madcap plan, although she’s wearing a pretty ballgown, not a Robin costume. “She was helping me push towards it, to actually do it. It’s pretty cool,” said Lance. Trying to do the right thing, Lance talked to a teacher about his unique prom suit to make sure it would be okay to wear. “She said the best idea would be to go to the committee so I have permission first, just to be safe. I don’t want to just show up and be denied,” he said. But on Wednesday, June 5, Lance got bad news: a handwritten note from the parent grad committee, telling him he couldn’t wear the Batman suit to prom. “I was quite disappointed,” Lance said. “I can’t rent a tux now. It’s too late; they don’t have any more. Either it’s this or we have to go to Calgary to buy one.” Debbie Funke, chair of the parent grad committee, said the 10-person group does applaud Lance for the eccentric idea. “We discussed it at length and came to the conclusion that, while you want to give the kid credit for attempting to do something a little bit different, it just comes back to it’s a formal event,” she said. “All the documentation that we’ve sent out this year to the kids and everything that’s been done in the past indicates that

Double the fun at child centre events
Kootenay Child Development Centre hosts car show, golf tourney SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Two fun events will raise money for Kootenay Child Development Centre in July. The first, the Tee Off For Kootenay Kids Golf Gala, will be held at St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino on Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12. “This is a two-day event,” said Patricia Whalen, fundraising coordinator at Kootenay Child Development Centre. “Thursday, July 11 will be a welcome re-
ception and early registration. Friday, July 12 will be the golf tournament all day. That night will be a dinner and dance with a DJ.” The highlight of the tournament is the fantastic prizes up for grabs with a hole in one, and great items in the silent auction on Friday night. “Oh my gosh, we have some amazing prizes. Thanks so much for the support from the community,” said Whalen.

formal or semi-formal attire is required.” Debbie said that Lance doesn’t necessarily have to wear a tux: any formal or semi-formal garb will be appropriate. “Batman doesn’t fit into either one of those criteria,” she said. “He can dress as Bruce Wayne and it would be wonderful.”
This year for Sam Steele Days the Kiddies Day Parade will be right before the main parade on Saturday. Sam Steele Days runs June 13 – 16. The Kiddies Day Parade is a chance for kids to get in their favourite costume, decorate their bike, dress up their pet or teddy bear and be a part of the community festivities. If they so choose, kids can also just walk the parade, as bikes are optional. This year it runs right before the main parade on Saturday morning June 15. “This year we’re going to kick off the Sam Steele parade,” said Jari Weaver, from the Cranbrook Leisure Services.
“Every other year we’ve had it on a Sunday morning after.” This year, however, they’re hoping to get a big turnout with the front-and-centre time. Participation is free for all ages; just be at 9th Avenue near The Choice at 9:30 a.m. The parade proceeds down Baker Street to 11th Avenue and disperses at the parking lot of 11th and Baker Street. There will be mascots from some of the local restaurants. There is also no need to register; just show up and be ready at 9:30 a.m. For more information on the parade, contact Weaver or Danielle Koekkoek at 250-4890220.

Newcomers to Canada who have settled in Cranbrook and Kimberley will be able to learn about starting a veggie patch thanks to a series of workshops this year. Starting on Tuesday, June 11, three workshops will be held over the summer, with another three to run in the fall. The purpose of the workshops is to teach people to grow who may not know a lot about conditions in the East Kootenay. “It’s a great opportunity for those new to the area, or new to gardening, to learn more about growing food locally and for longtime local residents to share local garden wisdom and learn more about the people moving to the area. Exchanging culture in the garden, transplanting new techniques, sharing the tried and true, and feeding inspiration for all will be the goals of this time together in the garden,” explained Wildsight’s Shannon Duncan, who is coordinating the workshops. The classes will be held in Kimberley at the Cominco Community Garden, and at Cranbrook at the Public Produce Garden in MacKinnon Park. The focus will be on the perks and challenges of growing here, as well as on sharing

Shannon Duncan knowledge and skills acquired elsewhere. “The workshops will follow the local growing season, covering as much as possible the basics of growing in this climate and covering the main challenges (specific pests, cold weather, dry weather) as we go through the seasons,” said Duncan. “There will be something for everyone, even experienced gardeners, as there will be techniques explored that could be new to gardeners, and there is also a
great opportunity for exchange among gardeners at the workshops from both longtime locals, and immigrants who could bring entirely new ideas and techniques, or even new varieties of produce to try out growing here.” The first workshop, titled “Fresh Beginnings”, will be on creating a garden bed, container gardens and ‘no dig’ potatoes. It will be held on Tuesday, June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Kimberley, and on Wednesday, June 12
from 6 to 8 p.m. in Cranbrook. On July 9 in Kimberley and July 10 in Cranbrook, gardeners will be taught to “Feed the Growth”, with a workshop on compost and manure as fertilizer, tomato care, and pest control. On August 6 in Kimberley and August 7 in Cranbrook, learn about “Berries, Roots and New Shoots”, at the final summer workshop on berry and root vegetable harvesting and care, and succession planting. The workshops have been made possible through the Welcoming Communities project, funded by the provincial and federal governments. Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, Cranbrook Food Action Committee and Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook have teamed up to offer the free workshops to connect newcomers and beginning gardeners with local knowledge, resources and the experience they need to grow their own food here. Organizers of the series are looking for more local garden mentors to help build this community by sharing their knowledge and wisdom. Members of the 1041st Transportation Company of the U.S. Army took a break from the road in Cranbrook Thursday, on their way back to Spokane, Washington, from Exercise Maple Resolve in Wainwright, Alberta.

On the anniversary of D-Day, June 6, members of the U.S. army passed through Cranbrook Thursday, bringing news of another joint military exercise. The 1041st Transportation Company, based out of Spokane, Washington, rolled through Cranbrook
on their way home, and paused for fuel and refreshment at the Husky truck stop on Highway 3. The company had been invited to attend Exercise Maple Resolve in the Wainwright, Alberta, area. According to the Canadian Forces website (www. army.forces.gc.ca) the joint exercise involved training
with other elements of the Canadian Armed Forces, such as the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Canadian Forces Health Services Group, the Canadian Joint Operations Command, as well as the U.S. Army. Jeremy Stevenson of the 1041st said they were integrated with Canadian units, used each other’s
City proclaims June Brain Injury Awareness Month Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
The City of Cranbrook has proclaimed the month of June to be brain injury awareness month. Lorraine Sweeney from the East Kootenay Brain Injury Association sent a letter to council asking for the month to be made into a proclamation to spread awareness of the risks associated with brain injury. “Brain injury is a silent epidemic because
it cannot be seen,” Sweeney said in the letter. “Survivors who have sustained a brain injury and their families’ lives are changed and often devastated by this tragedy.” Sweeney asked council to help the association bring more awareness to the issue. She said the association is working on bringing more education to the community on the large scope of brain injury.
She noted that helmet use is only one option for prevention, as children and adults receive brain injuries from various sources. Council also proclaimed June 1 to be Access Awareness Day and Rotary Way Day. Access Awareness Day seeks to ensure that access in the community is equal for everyone in the community. Rotary Way Day celebrates the 9.2 km route that winds its way through the city.

ore than 3,000 soldiers were tested to the highest degree of training the Canadian Army delivers. “A year of planning culminated into a gruelling final offensive at Ex Maple Resolve which saw one Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group successfully defeat a significant enemy force.
“The month-long training event focused on combined arms groupings in an environment that mimicked the realities of a deployment.” Exercise Maple Resolve, held annually at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, is one of the final gateways before a Task Force is declared ready to deploy.
Debate, don’t fight, Green MLA says Tom Fle tcher Black Press
VICTORIA – Canada’s first provincial Green Party politician is also the first MLA to take the oath of office as the B.C. legislature gets set to resume sitting. Climate scientist Andrew Weaver was sworn in Thursday as MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, the first of 85 MLAs elected to the 40th Parliament of B.C. Weaver said he plans to bring a different style to the legislature, emphasizing policy rather than the loud political theatre that some of the news media prefer. “We should be here to do policy, not to fight,” he said. “Criticism is easy. Constructive criticism is more difficult.” One issue Weaver plans to press the government on is its
ambitious agenda to develop liquefied natural gas exports. He said the current high price in the Asian market is unsustainable in the longer term, because of competition from Russia, the U.S. and Australia, and China’s development of horizontal fracturing technology to exploit its own shale gas reserves. He warned that “massive taxpayer subsidy” may be used to get into a market where prices can only decline. Weaver also repeated the Green Party’s call for a provincial budget officer, similar to the federal office that reviews government plans before they are implemented. “We have accountability at the tail end of policy,” he said. B.C. Green Party leader Jane
Sterk said she expects Weaver to have more influence than other independent MLAs, because of his Green affiliation, his relationships with B.C. Liberal MLAs and his scientific credentials. Weaver has taken leave from his faculty position at the University of Victoria, but will remain active in his scientific role. Premier Christy Clark unveils her new cabinet lineup in Vancouver Friday, followed by a swearing-in ceremony conducted by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon at Government House on Monday. B.C. Liberal MLAs are to be sworn in at the legislative chamber next Tuesday, along with Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington. NDP MLAs take the oath on Wednesday.

The hole in one prizes include $50,000 cash (sponsored by Al Dyck of Sunlife Financial), a car (sponsored by Spring Honda), a quad (sponsored by All Seasons and Peak Performance), a $10,000 appliance shopping spree (sponsored by Willow Appliances), and a hot tub (sponsored by Beachcomber). “Then we have some really great silent auction prizes. We have a couple of trips – one to the coast for a golf getaway, and one to the Columbia Valley, and a trip to Italy as well,” said Whalen. The idea for the tournament came about when a mother, Michelle Shmilt-Doll,
whose child visits Kootenay Child Development Centre, offered to step in and help organize an event. “All of a sudden she said, ‘I want to do a golf tournament fundraiser for you.’ I mean, that’s your dream as a fund-raiser, to have someone come to you and say, ‘I will do this for you and you will benefit,’” said Whalen. The Friday evening dinner will be a special event due to Michelle’s skills. “Michelle as an interior designer has such a talent for putting on a high level event. You can expect the dining and dance set-up to be very classy,” said Whalen.
2012 ANNUAL REPORT The City of Cranbrook 2012 Annual Report will be presented to Council for consideration at the Special Meeting on June 24, 2013 at 3:00pm in the City Hall Council Chambers. The 2012 Annual Report will be available for public review on the City website www.cranbrook.ca or can be picked up after 1:00pm on June 7, 2013 at the reception desk at City Hall. This notice is published in accordance with Section 99 of the Community Charter.
The golf tournament package is $250 – and Whalen said it’s worth every penny. “I know some people might think $250 is high, but with that you get an opportunity for some wonderful prizes, you have your evening events, your golf tournament (green fees and cart are included), and we are giving out goodie bags valued at $100.” For more information, visit www.teeoffcharitygolf.com. Then the following weekend, another big event will be held in Cranbrook in aid of Kootenay Child Development Centre. The Brothers Insurance Agency Charity Car Show, previously known as Mopars in the Mountains, will be held at Western Financial Place on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20. It’s the second year that the child development centre has taken over organizing the event, and it continues to grow. “Each year we are going to build and make it more exciting so that it becomes one of those events that everyone puts on their calendar a year ahead,” said Whalen. The activities kick off on Friday evening when vehicle registration begins at Brothers Insurance. Then, at 6 p.m., the Junk in Your Trunk Swap Meet will be held in the parking lot at Western Financial Place. “People can get a table and sell anything automotive related, whether it’s an engine, sideview mirrors, tires...” explained Whalen.
Later Friday night, a family-friendly movie will be broadcast on a big screen at Moir Park for a drive-in movie night. “It’s such a fun time. And this screen is drivein movie size. It’s huge. People get to listen to the movie through their radio stations, not like in the old days with those big godawful mounted things,” said Whalen. Gates open for the drive-in at 9 p.m., with the movie set to start about 9:45 p.m., once it gets dark enough. The main event for the car show will be held throughout the day on Saturday, July 20. Car enthusiasts will flock from all over western Canada and the U.S. to show off their fancy rides in the Western Financial Place parking lot. “There are some amazing cars that come out. Last year we had at least 115 vehicles. We are hoping we can close to double that this year, including motorbikes as well,” said Whalen. There will be food and merchandise vendors, businesses, local clubs and kids activities at the event, as well as a special musical act. “A big exciting part of the event is that we are bringing in the Blue Brothers Too tribute act. That will be quite exciting. They’ll put on quite a show for us. They will be here all day on Saturday, July 20. They will entertain all car-show goers,” said Whalen. Awards will be given out to car enthusiasts. “One that I’m really excited about is the family award – best father/ son, father/daughter project. I thought it was
important to add that category because that’s what our charity is all about,” said Whalen. In fact, the whole car show is aimed to be a family-friendly event. “That’s what our charity is all about. We also want to include the whole community because they have been so gracious to us in our years of fundraising. This is a way we can give back to the community by offering this wonderful event to bring their kids to,” said Whalen. For more information, visit www.brothersinsurancecarshow. ca. Both these big events are fundraisers for the Kootenay Child Development Centre, which provides support and services for East Kootenay children. The centre opened its doors last year after a massive fundraising campaign to raise money for construction. These events will go towards capital and ongoing expenses for the centre. “As we complete our capital part of the fundraising, we are still short approximately $50,000. This event and the golf tournament will go towards completing the capital project. Then we will work on building up our programs and services and get to the point where all of our non-profit tenants can be rent-free. Then they can take that rent and put it towards their program, whether it’s hiring more staff or buying more equipment. That’s our dream, to be able to have no mortgage on the building and all of our nonprofits rent free,” said Whalen.

N-words, and old-fashioned book burnings
E
xactly two years ago this week, Lawrence Hill received the most shocking email he had ever read. Hill is the author of “The Book of Negroes,” an absolutely amazing story which brought to light an episode of Canadian history most of us never knew: The mass-migration of 3,000 African-Americans from New York to Halifax in 1783. Having fought on the wrong side of the American Revolution, the British promised them a chance to start a new and better life in Canada. Yet no one would get safe passage unless their name appeared in a royal ledger known as “The Book of Negroes.” Hill’s novel follows an escaped slave who does get her name in the book, only to find Canada as harsh a place as anywhere. Hill’s book brought him numerous awards, including the IMPAC award, Canada Reads Best Book award, the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize, and the Giller Prize longlist. So he probably was not prepared for the email he opened on that fateful June day. “Dear Sir Lawrence Hill,” it began. “I intend to burn your book.” The message was from a Roy Groenberg, writing from the Netherlands. Groenberg claimed to be chairman of something called the Foundation Honor and Restore Victims of Slavery in Surname. Although puzzled, Hill kept reading. “We do not accept a book with the title ‘The Book of Negroes.’ We struggle for a long time to let the word ‘nigger’ disappears from Dutch language and now you set up your book of Negroes! A real shame! That’s why we make the decision to burn this book on the 22nd of June, 2011.” Hill would tell reporters later how the email “really shook me up.” He typed a reply, asking if Groenberg was aware that “The Book of Negroes” is an actual
BOOKNOTES
Mike Selby ledger kept in England’s National Archives. He also added that with this knowledge, “readers understand that the title is not intended to be offensive, but that it is used historically, to shed light on a forgotten document and on a forgotten migration (that of thousands of Blacks from the USA to Canada in 1783).” Hill closed his reply with: “Before you proceed with your plans to burn my novel, would you like to have a conversation about this?” Groenberg never answered back, and Hill watched him later on Dutch TV burning what looked like only the covers of his book. Hill found it unnerving to watch a work he deeply cared about be connected to such a heinous act of hate. As disturbing as this episode is, this wasn’t the first time Hill found difficulty with his book’s title. His American publisher changed the title to “Someone Knows My Name”; no bookstores were ordering the book because of the word “Negroes” in the title. Even in Quebec the book has been perplexing retitled “Aminata.” Hill is currently writing a screenplay adaption of his book. And he has no idea what title Hollywood will come up with. All he can hope for is that people “will put down their matches, respect freedom of speech, and enter into a civil conservation about slavery, freedom and contemporary language.” Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Paris 1968, Istanbul 2013
t’s certainly not another version of the “Arab Spring”; Turkey is a fully democratic country. It’s not just a Middle Eastern variant of the Occupy movement, either, although the demands of the huge crowds who have occupied the centre of Istanbul and other Turkish big cities are equally diffuse and contradictory. It’s more like the student uprising in Paris in May, 1968, although most of the demonstrators in Turkey are neither Marxists nor students. Like the Paris demos, it began over local issues and has rapidly grown into a popular revolt against an elected government that is deeply conservative, increasingly autocratic, and deaf to all protests. The original issue was Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan’s plan to destroy Istanbul’s Gezi Park in order to build a new shopping mall in a city that already has far too many. The park is the only green space in the newer part of downtown, north of the Golden Horn, and covering it over with yet more shops was bound to meet with some resistance. Erdogan, in cahoots with the developers as usual, assumed that the plan to include a mosque in the new mall would placate his own supporters, while the plan to make the exterior of the mall a replica of an old Ottoman barracks that had once stood on the site would assuage everybody else’s unhappiness at the loss of the park. He was wrong. At the start of the protest, on 27 May, only a few hundred people occupied the park. It might all have petered out if the police had not attacked them with clubs and tear gas last Friday night, burning their tents after they fled. The protesters came back in far larger number the next
day, and the same thing happened again. By the third night, city centres were being occupied all over Turkey, and it wasn’t just about Gezi Park any more. Prime Minister Erdogan, leaving for a tour of several Arab countries on Monday, dismissed the protests as the work of “a few looters” and “extremist elements”, and said he’d sort it out after he got back on Friday. Unruffled, you might call him — just as you would have described French Gwynne President Charles De Gaulle in the first days of Dyer the 1968 revolt in France. It’s been a week, and the protesters have not quit. Meanwhile, in Erdogan’s absence, his closest colleagues have been conciliatory. President Abdullah Gul said “the messages sent in good faith have been received,” and Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said “The use of excessive force against the people who initially started this protest ... was wrong.” But what is it really about? After all, Prime Minister Erdogan has led his moderate Islamist party, the Justice and Development Party (AK), to three successive wins in national elections, each time with a bigger share of the vote. He has presided over a decade of high-speed economic growth that has lifted millions out of poverty, and he has finally forced the army out of politics. Why don’t they love him? Some do, but many people think he has got too big for his boots. Erdogan retains the support of the pious and deeply conservative peasants and recent immigrants to the cities who make up the bulk of his supporters, but he wouldn’t have won without the backing of secular, urban voters who saw him as the best chance to expel the army from politics and put Turkish democracy on a firm footing. He
has now lost their trust. He won it by promising that his government would not shove conservative Islamic values down everybody else’s throats, and until recently he kept his promise. But his last election victory, in which he got 50 per cent of the vote in a multi-party race, has emboldened him to believe that he can ignore his erstwhile secular supporters. He has pushed through new laws restricting the sale and consumption of alcohol. Despite the misgivings of most Turks, he enthusiastically supports the Sunni Muslim rebels in Syria, as part of a broader strategy of re-establishing the political and economic dominance that the Ottoman Empire once enjoyed in the Sunni Arab world. He even insists on naming the proposed third bridge across the Bosphorus after the 16th century Ottoman ruler, Yavuz Sultan Selim, who is notorious for massacring tens of thousands of Turkey’s Alevi religious minority. Around a quarter of Turkey’s population are Alevis, and they have not forgotten. Once Erdogan could play public opinion like a violin; now he is arrogant and tone-deaf. So where does this end up? Not with the overthrow of Turkey’s elected government, and probably not in a military coup either. Most likely there will be apologies, and some government concessions, and the turbulence will subside. Erdogan will not even be removed as AK party leader right away, though some of his senior colleagues now clearly see him as a liability. The protesters in Paris in May, 1968 didn’t get what they wanted right away either. Indeed, like the protesters in Gezi Park today, they weren’t even sure exactly what they wanted. But 11 months later Charles De Gaulle resigned, and France has never since had to cope with the problem of a Strong Man in power.

Batman or not?
It has come to my attention, that within the past week, a student at Mount Baker Secondary School has been informed that he is not allowed to wear the Batman suit that he purchased for his prom. Today, June 5, 2013 he received a hand written note which said “The parent prom committee asks that you wear formal attire to prom, not the batman suit.” I find this unjust and a bit discriminatory towards this young man. It is his Grade 12 year and his prom. Why is he being told what he can and cannot wear? I am a bit confused and do not see the reasoning behind this decision. So he wants to wear a Batman suit, what is the harm in that? His date is okay with it, and it should not be offensive to those in attendance. I personally know this young man, and I know he is not doing this to hurt or offend anyone. He is a great kid and should have the right to make the decision about what he wants to wear to his prom. He is by far one of the most unique individuals that I know and I wish that I had his courage. Maybe if today’s society wasn’t so set on trying to conform our youth to an outdated standard, everyone would be a bit more accepting of individuality. So he wants to go to his prom dressed as Batman? Let him! He has the right to make that decision and he should be allowed to make that decision for himself. He will be old enough to vote within the next year, are you going to tell him how to do that as well? I for one, will stand behind him and his decision. And I will fight for his rights. For those of you that don’t stand behind him, why are you trying to crush this young
man’s spirit? You should be embracing him and supporting his decision to be unique. “The most important thing in life is to be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Always be Batman.” (Unknown) Yonda Oosterhoff Penticton
Thanks, Mainroad It seems my letter regarding sweeping the St. Mary Lake Road needs some clarification. My letter was in response to a letter from a Pighin Road resident who questioned the spring sweeping of rural roads. When I read that letter, I immediately called Mainroad to thank them for sweeping St. Mary Lake Road. It was swept earlier this spring, and is very much appreciated by residents and other recreationalists who use the road for cycling, running and walking. In addition to removal of dust, there are safety concerns with gravel accumulating in corners on on the sides of rural roads causing skidding into our deep ditches and rocks flying and damaging windshields. Sorry for the confusion and thanks again, Mainroad. Virginia Anderson St. Mary Lake Road
City Flower In his recent Letter to the Editor, John Allen made a very valid point about one of the many scourges that is invading the city of Kimberley. It appears that no one from city maintenance has stepped out of their
vehicle to see the damage that our ‘City Flower’, the dandelion, is causing to the streets, curbs and sidewalks. I know that there are people who will break out in spasms of agony if the word ‘pesticide’ is used but dandelions are slowly consuming our city. Just take a look at our parks and fields that have become virtually unusable. Someone is not doing their job. Moving on to another topic, I wish to discuss the five Townsite stairs which were recently damaged when vandals rolled large boulders from the top. The Path Committee seems to feel that those who use the stairs require rest stations in order to get to the top. Perhaps the Path Committee should more closely observe those that use the stairs (when they are open). They have mastered the climb by climbing without resting or in some cases they stop for a brief breather. A rest station? Really? Might I suggest that someone go to the top of the stairs and remove the boulders so that they won’t be rolled down again? Regular stair users continue to use the stairs because it is the most direct and efficient route to the bottom. Those pushing strollers or wishing to take a more leisurely stroll can chose the longer ‘path’ option. The more I ponder the matters that feel relevant to me, the more I believe that accountability and common sense are harder to find than a belly button on a sumo wrestler. I recently heard about the citizen’s advocacy group that has been formed in Cranbrook to keep similar issues in clear focus. Perhaps that is the answer for Kimberley. I hope not. h yes, the little country paper; aside from letters, telegraph and traveller’s tales, the local paper was the sole source of news for most residents. There were out-oftown newspapers, of course – the CPR brought them in on a regular basis – but the local paper, while often ignoring the larger picture, served up the local news. In 115 years Cranbrook has never been without a regular weekly paper and for many years the city has been Author Unknown, Herald graced by a daily newspaper Newspaper 1907 publishing up to 25,000 copies
weekly and employing 25 office staff alone, a far cry from the little country paper of yore. How different then is the present day paper from that of its earliest predecessor, the Cranbrook Herald? In the most basic of ways it is not different at all: the news is gathered, printed, folded and delivered to the public. Nonetheless, let us take, as an example, a copy of the Cranbrook Herald from June 1911. Newspapers were bigger then. Not necessarily in length, but in actual size. The 1911 Herald was a broadsheet, typically
twice the size of the present day tabloids. It was generally eight pages in length although that varied year to year and occasionally week to week depending on the amount of available paper and other considerations such as short-staffing, mechanical breakdowns and the occasional fire. The size of the paper allowed for at least seven columns of type per page which, over the course of eight pages, made for a substantial amount of reading.

Sharapova, Williams set to meet in French Open final STE VEN WINE Associated Press
PARIS - As Maria Sharapova celebrated her return to the French Open final, she let loose one last scream - this one a happy holler. Serena Williams won more quietly and quickly, and she’ll play Sharapova for the title Saturday. Sharapova, the defending champion, overcame 11 double-faults to win a semifinal shriekfest against Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Williams then advanced to her first French Open final since 2002 by dispatching Sara Errani 6-0, 6-1 in 46 minutes of astounding power and precision. Williams’ win was the most lopsided women’s semifinal at Roland Garros since 1984, when Chris Evert beat Camille Benjamin 6-0, 6-0.
SECAUCUS, N.J. The Toronto Blue Jays drafted a tall, athletic pitcher with their first pick of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. Sound familiar? The Blue Jays selected right-hander Phil Bickford with the 10th overall pick Thursday. The 17-yearold right-hander from Oaks Christian High School in California is six-foot-four, 200 pounds, and can throw a 96 m.p.h. fastball that Toronto’s director of amateur scouting, Brian Parker, says is polished. Bickford led his high school club to its division champion-

Sharapova beat Errani in the final last year to complete a career Grand Slam, but she faces a tougher test this time. She’s 2-13 against Williams, who has been on a mission after more than a decade of disappointment in Paris. “Obviously whatever I did in the past hasn’t worked,” Sharapova said. “So I’ll have to try to do something different and hopefully it will.” The top-ranked Williams, a 15-time Grand Slam champion, won her only Roland Garros title 11 years ago by beating her sister Venus in the final. “I’m very happy to be back in the French Open final 11 years later,” Williams told the crowd in French. “I’m still here 11 years later. It’s so wonderful for me.”

ship, where he struck out 18 batters in the final, including 11 in a row. Bickford finished his senior season with a 1.72 earned-runs average, allowing 44 hits and recording 159 strikeouts in 99.1 innings. “We’re very excited about this kid,” Parker said on a conference call. “He’s got one of the best fastballs in the draft. He’s an athletic kid and we’re all very excited to get this guy going.” Blue Jays scouts seem to have an eye for rangy pitchers of late. Toronto has drafted 11 pitchers measuring six-foot-four or taller since 2007.

Local rider earns provincial title TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Hannah van der Roest is a provincial champion after coming out in first place in a cross country race during a province-wide high school mountain bike competition in Port Moody. Van der Roest earned first place honours in Cross Country with a time of 42:39, and also came in third place for a shorter downhill Enduro course with a time of 18:08. Not bad in a field of roughly 120 other competitors. “It feels pretty awesome,” said van der Roest, a Grade 11 student at Mount Baker Secondary School. “It was a really fun race and it’s really fun to stand on top of the podium.” Each year, a different school hosts a mountain bike race for provincials but the only East Kootenay representation came from riders in Mount Bake, Kootenay Christian Academy and an athlete out of Revel-

stoke. It was a bit of a gloomy race-day, with some rain to add another element to the event, said van der Roest. “The trail was very rooty and had lots of boardwalks. It was very different from Cranbrook riding, that’s for sure,” she said. “...You can’t really compare two places to one another, because it’s a different kind of riding, but the trail itself was quite technical and difficult, but really fun. There were a couple wipeouts and some blood at the finish line, but lots of kids had a lot of fun.” Van der Roest rides
with a Kona Hei Hei Supreme, which she said is “the best mountain bike in the world,” and has been involved in the sport ever since getting on a two-wheeler at five years old. Blackhawks push Kings to the brink of elimination with 3-2 win Greg Beacham Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - Marian Hossa scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the Chicago Blackhawks moved to the brink of the Stanley Cup finals with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. Patrick Kane tapped home the tying goal as Chicago rallied from a second-period deficit to snap the defending Stanley Cup champions’ 15-game, home-winning streak since March. Bryan Bickell had a goal and an assist for the top-seeded Blackhawks, who took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Slava Voynov and Dustin Penner scored for the Kings, who had won their first eight playoff games at Staples Center. The champs are in trouble after Jonathan Quick failed to match Corey Crawford, who made 19 saves. The Blackhawks won without top defenceman Duncan Keith, who served a one-game suspen-
sion for high-sticking Jeff Carter in the face during the second period of Game 3. Keith easily is the Hawks’ ice-time leader and top-scoring defenceman, but Sheldon Brookbank filled in while Chicago played strong team defence in front of Crawford, who has matched the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in the other net. “You miss a defenceman like Duncan Keith, he is the guy who plays the most on the blue line,” Hossa said. “When you miss him, someone else has to step up, and
our guys did.” Los Angeles hadn’t lost a playoff game at home since Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals last season, winning nine straight overall, but the Blackhawks figured out how to end the NHL’s longest home post-season winning run since 2009. The Kings had been outstanding when playing with a lead in front of Quick, who stopped 25 shots, but Los Angeles uncharacteristically surrendered a 2-1 lead late in the second period. The high-scoring Kane ending his seven-game goal drought in a quiet post-season by charging into the crease to tap home the tying goal on a rebound of Niklas Hjalmarsson’s shot and Bickell’s deflection late in the second period. Hjalmarsson finished with two assists. After Los Angeles killed a penalty to open the third period, Michal Handzus caught the Kings napping and set up a break with the speedy Hossa, who ripped a precise shot for his seventh goal of the post-season.

MIAMI - The San Antonio Spurs returned to the NBA Finals just the way they left - with a victory over LeBron James. Tim Duncan overcame a slow start to finish with 20 points and 14 rebounds, Tony Parker banked in a desperation jumper with 5.2 seconds left and the Spurs withstood James’ triple-double to beat the Miami Heat 92-88 on Thursday night in a thrilling Game 1. Parker ended up with 21 points after referees reviewed his shot to make sure it just beat the shot clock, giving San Antonio a fourpoint edge in a game Need help with current events?

that was close the whole way. James had 18 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists in his second straight NBA Finals triple-double, but he shot only 7 of 16 against some good defence by Kawhi Leonard, and Miami’s offence stalled in the fourth quarter. Playing for the championship for the first time since sweeping James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in 2007, the Spurs improved to 5-for-5 in Game 1s, hanging around for three quarters and then
blowing by the defending champions midway through the fourth. Manu Ginobili, the third member of San Antonio’s Big Three that has combined for 99 post-season victories together, finished with 13 points, and Danny Green had 12. Game 2 is Sunday night. James became a champion on this floor last year in Game 5 against Oklahoma City, but he hasn’t forgotten his first taste of the finals. The Spurs swept his
Cavaliers in 2007 and James spoke Wednesday like someone who had payback in mind. He was 22 then, a fourth-year player headed for greatness but with holes in his game that San Antonio exploited in a fourgame sweep. Revenge won’t come easily - if it comes at all. Dwyane Wade scored 17 points for the Heat but was shut out in the fourth quarter. Chris Bosh had only two of his 13 in the final period.

Nuggets fire head coach George Karl Associated Press
DENVER - George Karl is following general manager Masai Ujiri out of Denver. Less than a month after winning the NBA’s Coach of the Year award, Karl’s tenure with the Nuggets is over after 8 1/2 seasons. His departure comes shortly after Ujiri, the league’s executive of the year, left to become GM of the Toronto Raptors. “So, we lost a GM
now and a coach, what’s next?” tweeted Nuggets big man Kenneth Faried. Karl had a year left on his contract and was aiming for a new deal. The Clippers, Nets and 76ers also have head coaching vacancies and the Memphis Grizzlies have given coach Lionel Hollins permission to speak with other teams. Karl guided the third-youngest team in the NBA to the third-
best record in the Western Conference with a franchise-record 57 wins, but the Nuggets were bounced from the first round of the playoffs for the fourth straight season. A two-time cancer survivor, Karl changed his coaching style after returning from throat cancer in 2010. He delegated more duties at practice, relying on his assistant coaches to do much of the teaching.
Campbell to miss rest of NHL playoffs Associated Press
BOSTON - Boston Bruins centre Gregory Campbell will miss the rest of the NHL playoffs with a broken right leg. General manager Peter Chiarelli made the announcement Thursday. Campbell was hurt during the second period of the Bruins 2-1, double-overtime victory Wednesday night that gave them a 3-0 lead over Pittsburgh in the Eastern
Conference finals. Game 4 is Friday night. During a Penguins power play, Campbell fell in the right faceoff circle with about eight minutes left. He got up and dove in the high slot to try and block Evgeni Malkin’s shot. He kept playing for about a minute before reaching his bench. He didn’t return. “What he went through showed a lot of guts,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “It
was a pretty serious injury.” In 15 playoff games this year, Campbell has three goals and four assists as part of a strong fourth line. At practice on Thursday, Julien told reporters he’d like to continue using four lines. Boston, easily one of the deepest teams in the league, has plenty of options that have been sitting in the press box, and can dress at any time.

Typographical errors were ont uncommno along with udsipe-pown letters and sdrawkcab words, more so it seems following local celebrations when the men of the press room may not have been at their best. On the other hand, if an advertisement was printed upside down it was generally assumed to indicate that the business in question had failed to pay the bill. Pleas for payment from subscribers appeared on a fairly regular basis, as for example: “It takes wind to run a newspaper. It takes a scintillating acrobatic imagination and a railway pass to run a newspaper. But money – heavens to Betsy and six hands round, who ever needed money to run a newspaper? Kind words are the
medium of exchange that does the business for the editor, kind words and church social tickets. When you see an editor with money, watch him. He will be paying bills and disgrace the profession. Make him trade it out. He lives to swap. Then when you die, after having stood around and sneered at his Jim Crow paper, be sure and have your wife send in for three extra papers and when she reads the generous and touching notices about you, forewarn her to neglect to send 15 cents to the editor. What the editor wants is heartfelt thanks. Then he can thank the printers and they can thank the grocers.” Full page headlines were rare; the Herald of June 8, 1911 ran small
headlines over sixteen articles on page one, almost all local in nature although on occasion the first page was entirely taken up by a single story, the death of an English monarch for instance. Photographs were not entirely uncommon although local photos were used sparingly at best and rarely on the first page. The second page was devoted to provincial/federal politics, land notices, and statistics. Page three contained news of the district: Elko, Fernie, Bull River Falls, Moyie, Baynes Lake et al. Page four was home to editorial views on both local and national affairs, often political or moral in nature, adages and general words of advice or humour along with a church column, upcoming community events, local news items

of an upcoming visiting theatrical production. The remainder featured “Old Country News” (primarily England) and various notices. Page eight returned to local notes. There was no sports page, no weather, no cartoons, no crossword or word
games, no classified page, no women’s page and no entertainment page. There were, however, advertisements on every page. Then, as now, advertisers made up a great deal of the income. In short: back then more writing, today more pictures;
back then bigger, today smaller; back then a little country paper reporting local news, today a bigger city paper reporting local news. One thing certainly remains the same, however: when you see an editor with money, watch him.

tion Bureau said Thursday it is laying criminal charges against Nestle Canada Inc., Mars Canada Inc. and ITWAL Ltd., a network of independent wholesale distributors. Also charged are former Nestle Canada president Robert Leonidas; Sandra Martinez, former president of confectionery for Nestle Canada; and David Glenn Stevens, president and chief executive of ITWAL. The companies and individuals are accused of conspiracy under the Competition Act. In separate statements, both Nestle and Mars said they intend to “vigorously defend’’ themselves against the charges. Both said the al-
legations date back to 2007 and earlier. Statements from ITWAL and Hershey were not immediately available. The bureau says it must not only prove competitors agreed to fix prices, but that the agreement would likely have “an undue economic effect’’ on the market. “We are fully committed to pursuing those who engage in egregious anti-competitive behaviour that harms Canadian consumers,’’ said interim competition commissioner John Pecman. “Price-fixing is a serious criminal offence and today’s charges demonstrate the Competition Bureau’s resolve to stop cartel activity in Cana-

ST. ALBERT, Alta. — Alberta MP Brent Rathgeber says he no longer answers to the Prime Minister’s Office and the government can’t force him to resign his seat. Rathgeber quit the Conservative caucus on Wednesday night to become an Independent over what he calls the Harper government’s “lack of transparency.’’
“I have reluctantly come to the inescapable conclusion that the government’s lack of support for my (private member’s) transparency bill is tantamount to a lack of support for transparency and open government generally,’’ he said. Speaking at a news conference in his riding of Edmonton-St. Albert, Rathgeber said he finds

da.’’ The bureau found out about the alleged scheme through its immunity program, under which the first party to disclose an offence or provide evidence may receive immunity, provided it fully co-operates. Subsequent parties that help out in an investigation may receive lenient treatment. In this case, the bureau says Hershey Canada Inc. co-operated with its investigation and the agency recommended to prosecutors that the company receive lenient treatment. The Competition Act’s current conspiracy provision could mean a $25-million fine and/or imprisonment of up to 14 years.

it “rich’’ that an official in Harper’s office has said he should resign and run in a byelection. “I have two other words: David Emerson. You will recall that in 2006 ... David Emerson, having just been elected days before as a Liberal, walked across the floor and joined the Conservative government.’’ Rathgeber said the government doesn’t seen to understand that it has no parliamentary authority to force him to step down. “The Conservative party doesn’t own the seat simply because I won it for them.’’ He said he will do what his constituents want. “I’m accountable to my constituents and if I sense that my constituents are unhappy with my decision, then I’ll have to deal with it. But the preliminary emails and tweets that have come into the office show anything but unhappiness. “I suspect I’m safe with my constituents,’’ he said. “I’ll answer to them. I won’t answer to the PMO anymore.’’

A powerful tool when you want to reach your potential customers.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might not be aware of the confusion that surrounds you. You feel centered and focused. Use caution with all your energy, as others simply are not on the same page. Make it a point to really listen to a friend or loved one. Confirm all meetings. Tonight: Count on intensity. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Whatever a boss or parent says, he or she means. How this person delivers the message might change, but the words will remain the same. Don’t be surprised if you witness a minor display of frustration. The smart Bull will say little. Tonight: Maintain a sense of humor. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Others could associate your dynamic personality with many different experiences. Should you choose to reveal your fiery side, for example, people might link you to high-energy situations. Do not take any comments personally. Tonight: TGIF! Start your weekend now!
CANCER (June 21-July 22) If you can take the day off, do. Take a walk by the water in order to center yourself. Choose this type of experience, and you’ll bypass much of the confusion that marks today. Use caution with others, and be aware that their words speak of the moment. Tonight: Keep your distance. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Focus on friendship. Let your imagination play into the moment. Your fiery side might emerge when dealing with a friend who seems to stomp all over your plans. Consider this behavior a manifestation of this person’s confusion. Tonight: Where your friends are. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might decide to take the lead in a project, as you’ll note a theme of chaos running throughout the day. Investigate what could be the root of this issue. Consider that you might not be hearing others clearly. The haze surrounds you, too! Tonight: Celebrate the weekend. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
For Better or Worse
Listen to news with a bit of cynicism. Your sixth sense kicks in when you sense that something is off or not adding up. Confirm facts and ask questions, as your sources might not realize that they are giving out distorted information. Tonight: Try reading the tea leaves. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll want to rethink a personal matter. This could be difficult, as someone might refuse to leave you alone. Trust that the right moment will appear, perhaps in a few days. By then, you will have new information. Tonight: Grab your favorite person, and go celebrate the weekend. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might think that you have solid plans, but so many invitations will appear that you could need to make an adjustment. Whatever you are doing, make sure that all parties are on the same page. Confirm meeting times and place just in case. Tonight: Be reasonable. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Recognize your limits, as you start what you think is a very
normal day. Apparently, others already seem to have bypassed their work schedule for Friday plans. The reason might not be as important as you recognizing the issue. Tonight: Do whatever makes you feel good. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) While others might act confused -- or in some cases, ornery -- you are caught up in your efforts of pleasing a loved one. You will have to decide what should be done and what should be left for a rainy day. A child could make you laugh. Tonight: Keep spontaneity a high priority. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Much is likely to wash right over you, which will prevent you from seeing clearly now. You might not want to deal with what is coming up. Use caution around a display of anger. You might be far more vulnerable than you are aware. Tonight: Home is where the heart is. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a 16-year-old girl in high school. I have so much to be thankful for, but recently, I have been feeling like something is wrong with me. Quite frankly, I am depressed. I am always tired, anxious and nervous, and I have outrageous mood swings. I have lost all focus, ambition and motivation, and sometimes it just hurts to breathe. I hate to use this as an excuse for my grades, but I had been a straight-A student, and now I have two C’s and a B. This is unacceptable. I hate disappointing my parents. Along with the grades and the other symptoms I mentioned, I am constantly having trouble eating and recently resorted to selfharm. Suicidal thoughts also accompany this, as much as I hate to admit it. I worry that if I tell my parents, they will hate me. I don’t have a teacher or counselor I feel comfortable confiding in. None of my friends know, and I am scared that I will do more damage to myself than I intend. Please help me. I hide behind a smile every day, and I am so lost. -- Depressed in Hiding Dear Depressed: Please tell your parents you aren’t feeling well and ask them to make an appointment for you to see your doctor. A lot of what you are describing may have physiological origins that can be treated (such as a hormonal imbalance). You can speak to the doctor privately and tell him what you told us. But please don’t be afraid to discuss this with your parents. They love and care about you. They may be worried, but they will want to help, and you will feel better confiding in them. Dear Annie: My cousin is getting married in another state. I have four other relatives in my city, and we are planning to go together, even though we’ve seen this cousin only a few times in our lives. The wedding is on a Sunday evening, and we’d arrive on Saturday afternoon. If there is a rehearsal dinner on Saturday night, should we be included as out-of-town relatives? We’re already spending a great deal of money on airfare and hotel rooms. What do you say? -- Dinner Guest or No? Dear Dinner Guest: The rehearsal dinner is specifically for the bridal party, immediate family and the officiant. If the hosts can afford to include out-of-state guests (related or not), it is both gracious and appreciated. However, if there are many such guests, it can be beyond the means of the hosts to include them in the rehearsal dinner. It is appropriate, however, for them to provide some welcoming snack or hospitality for all out-of-towners upon their arrival, since such guests are unfamiliar with nearby restaurants and might be arriving too late to eat at the hotel coffee shop. Dear Annie: I was moved to write after reading the letter from “California,” the man who felt so guilty about a brief extramarital affair he had 40 years ago that he wanted to confess it to his children. My parents divorced in 1968, when I was 13. I would respect my father more if he would acknowledge that his affairs were a significant reason for the divorce. Our mother told us, but didn’t use it as part of the divorce proceedings. I think she thought it was too embarrassing. Dad married his girlfriend six months later. Last summer, my 87-year-old father had the nerve to tell me that my mother was the one who wanted the divorce and he didn’t know why. While you may think it would do more harm than good, I’d rather my father tell us than keep lying. -- S. Dear S.: Your father had a long-term affair that resulted in a divorce. It is not the same as a brief indiscretion that was deeply regretted. And while Dad should not lie or blame your mother, it’s possible that, at the age of 87, he no longer clearly remembers the reason behind the divorce. 7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products,” “Where I prefer to receive information about companies,” and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise.” At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America

The Religious Revolution is upon us
I
recently read a column by Tom Ehrich, a writer and Episcopal priest in New York, which is worth passing on. He begins by reminding us of a book written in 2008 by Phyllis Tickle called “The Great Emergence.” Her primary thesis is that every 500 years, the Christian church has gone through a major upheaval and rethinking of how it lives and speaks in the world, and that we are currently going through another such upheaval. She uses the charming image of the church holding a giant rummage sale every 500 years. She divides the 2,000–year–long history of the church into four eras: Around 500 AD, barbarians sought to subjugate Rome by wiping out its underlying religion. Christianity went underground. In abbeys like Iona, monks painstakingly copied Scripture and civilization’s great writings, in effect saving Western civilization itself. Around 1000 AD came the “Great Schism,” when the Western church based in Rome and the Eastern church based in Constantinople fought over creeds and doctrine as well as political power. That split endures to this day between Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism. Around 1500 AD came the Protestant Reformation, when nationalism born of exploration in the New World and new commercial wealth demanded an end to Rome’s domination of European life. That split also endures. Today, in this new millennium, Christianity wears so many different faces that it’s difficult to speak of a single “Christian move-
ment.” There are so many different denominations that we can hardly count them all. There’s a vast chasm between Christianity in the West and the booming churches of Africa and Latin America. The church in Europe has virtually collapsed. In North America, there is a relentless decline of institutional Christianity; the last census shows that over 35 per cent of residents in BC now claim “no religion”. Tickle calls this age the “Great Emergence.” Diana Butler Bass calls it “Christianity after Religion.” Ehrich suggests that conservative Christians tend to blame outside forces such as “secular humanists” and atheists for their determined assault. As a result, they focus inward and demand that the surrounding culture return to its Christian roots. Progressive Christianity, meanwhile, searches for an explanation that looks forward, not backward, but its infrastructure is collapsing too fast for anything but stubborn clinging to old ideas that explain too little and new ideas that promise too little. We aren’t likely to comprehend this latest transition until it is further along. But Ehrich notes two things which have become clear: “First, Christianity in North America is being freed from its own roots. Roman Catholics in the pews are straining to find why Rome and the pope are relevant to their faith needs. Mainline Christianity is moving beyond the captivity of white, middle–class, property– owning, optimistic serenity. Conservative Christianity is discovering that right opinion leads nowhere and a

nity.” Stuck with inherited buildings they can no longer afford, with traditions that no longer resonate outside the bubble, with ranks graying and pews emptying, established church leaders seem ready to consider change. Most will change too little, and will try to circle the wagons. But some will look outward and be moved to compassion by a nation lost
collapse from the inside. “The world changed—as cultures, economies, and political systems always do—and the church thought it could stand still and avoid offending pillars and pledge payers. “Meanwhile, people began finding their own pathways to God, their own languages for accessing God, their own ideas about life’s purpose, and their own forms of faith commu-
mental. “Second, Christianity no longer controls the flow. Its ideas no longer shape cultural dialogue. Its leaders no longer command broad respect. Its buildings no longer draw people in by simply opening their doors. Churches’ stubborn clinging to Sunday worship stopped working decades ago.” For Ehrich, it’s not so much an attack from outside but rather a

in dysfunction and by lives being lost to our own mega–rich barbarians. “It’s an exciting and hopeful time. Faith communities brought to their knees by changes beyond their control will land in exactly the right posture: to confess, submit, pray and serve.”
