Nestled down near the east shore of Okanagan Lake is a winery that never fails to surprise. And it is one sure to convince all but the most determined of wine snobs that all good things do not come from grapes. Elephant Island Orchard Wines captured our imaginations on our first visit a decade ago and hasn’t failed to impress since then. Not having visited the winery for a few years, we were reintroduced to its fruit wines at a Naramata Bench Winery Association tasting in Calgary a few months ago. Guests were presented with a glass of pink bubbly upon arrival and it was a real treat. Murmurs could be heard around the room when it was announced that the Pink Elephant was made from apple, not grape, juice. Then, on our last trip to Naramata, we were royally entertained at the Naramata Heritage Inn, where the new owners’ grand opening celebrations were kicked off with the sabering of sparkling wine. A series of brave volunteers sharply slid the blade of a sabre along the neck of the bottle, which snaps off the heavy ring of glass at the top. The pressurized contents then shoot the cork and glass ring a considerable distance, and also eject any tiny glass shards. It’s an exciting way to start a celebration, and the wine did nothing to lessen the momentum of the evening.

Elephant Island Orchard Wines was founded in 1999 by Miranda and Del Halladay, in partnership with Miranda’s grandmother, the architect Catherine Chard Wisnicki. Wisnicki had purchased the property against the advice of her husband, who was convinced the investment for retirement would turn into a White Elephant. He referred to the property as his wife’s Eye-land, because of what he perceived as her obsession for the aesthetic. So visitors shouldn’t be surprised when the road down to the winery doesn’t take them over a bridge and onto an island. It does, though, lead to a remarkable selection of wines, a couple of which are even made from grapes. First to the Pink Elephant. Fermented from the juice of Granny Smith apples, the wine is made with the methode champenoise, like traditional Champagne from France. Before being corked it gets a dosage of Cassis, which lends a beautiful pink colour to the end product. We have served it with the addition of Okanagan Spirits black currant liqueur to make Kir Royals which, with the addition of a preserved hibiscus flower in the bottom of a glass, results in a very exotic drink that bumps up any celebration a notch. Another sparkling wine, The Little King, is named in memory of the Halladays’ son, Rex. All proceed to go a pediatric nursing education fund at the BC Children’s Hospital. To date more than $70,000 has been

donated. Four fruit wines are available, from pears, cherries, blackberries and black currants. The dessert wine line-up includes fortified versions from black currants (Cassis) raspberries (Framboise), apricot and crabapple wines and a Port-style wine, too. Two grape wines, with tongue-in-cheek names, Naysayer (Cabernet Franc) and I Told You So (Viognier), acknowledge that the Halladays can handle fruit from vines, too. In fact the Viognier (which has a touch of Sauvignon Blanc added for acidity) was named the best in its category in the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival, a testament to Del’s skill in the winery. If Elephant Island was just a novelty among BC wineries, it would be a good one. But it’s much more than that. We still smile when we remember reading, on our first ever visit, a newspaper article talking about how someone managed to slip an Elephant Island cherry wine into a Pinot Noir tasting in Vancouver. It won, much to the embarrassment of the judges when the ruse was discovered. More information can be found on the excellent web site, www.elephantislandwine.com. BC Provincial Shooting Championship results The Bull River Shooters Association hosted the BC Provincial championship in lieu of its annual invitational match over the Victoria Day Weekend at our range near Ft Steele. 123 small bore rifles (.22 cal) and 70 high power rifles (6mm and up) were used by competitors from all over BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territory, Montana and Washington. Participants shoot at steel targets representing chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams! Competitors shoot from an unsupported standing position and targets are 40 – 100 meters away for .22’s and 200 – 500 meters for high-power rifles. Thanks to the efforts of club members the range and grounds were in excellent shape and the mostly fine weather made for great shooting and fun camping and camaraderie. New friendships were forged and old rivalries were rekindled, supported by a fantastic BBQ Saturday night. Some families enjoy the annual weekend as a reunion of sorts, travelling to visit and compete against each other. We are particularly pleased to continue to see a number of junior shooters participating in our sport. Results: .22 Silhouette Rifle: Champion, Eric Boos, WA Master, Tony Biamonte, Vancouver Island AAA, Rob McKeeman, Cranbrook AA, Richard Carere, Wasa A, Kalvin Marsh, Cranbrook B, Dale Kuta, Crowsnest Pass .22 Hunting Rifle: Champion, Eric Boos, WA Master, George Kesic, Mission AAA, Dale Searle, Kamloops

AA, Richard Carere, Wasa A, Brad Schill, Sparwood B, Jordan Marsh, Cranbrook Top Junior in Small Bore: Kaitlynn Johnson, Cranbrook. High Power Silhouette Rifle: Champion, Tony Biamonte, Vancouver Island Master, Eric Boos, WA AAA, George Kesic, Mission AA, Rob McKeeman, Cranbrook A, Lloyd Haskin, Saskatchewan B, Brad Schill, Sparwood High Power Hunting Rifle: Champion, Eric Boos, WA Master, Tony Biamonte, Vancouver Island AAA, Robert Ball, Vancouver Island AA, Rocky Marsh, Wardner A, Roy Church, Washington B, Jeff Spence, Calgary The overall aggregate champion in both small bore and high power was Eric Boos of Washington and the BC ag-

gregate champion was Tony Biamonte of Vancouver Island, in both small bore and high power. The Bull River Shooters wish to thank numerous businesses, both local and afar for their tremendous support, which allowed for everyone to take home something special to remember their visit to the East Kootenays. Thanks to all the competitors, especially those who travelled great distances, for your competitive spirit and good sportsmanship. It was heartwarming to see competitors helping each other with advice and support. A fundamental part of our sport sees competitors spotting for each other. This includes scoring but more importantly the spotter coaches the shooter about the location of hits and misses. At one point my spotter spoke up and told me I just repeated a near miss. This correction helped me pick up the next few targets by correcting my aim. We extend a big thanks to Treena Marsh for running the canteen

all weekend… nobody went hungry! Linda Marsh, Anne Pique, and Sarah Marsh ran the Stat Desk so all could monitor their standings. Gord Whitney came all the way from Lethbridge to be our Range Officer. The BRSA board all pulled together to keep things running smoothly. Local youths joined together to work as target setters. This match is always a fantastic group effort! Metallic silhouette shooting is great fun and very social and family oriented. It is also very challenging which makes it satisfying to hear the clank of the steel target as it gets knocked down! Specta-

tors enjoy the sport because they see and hear the targets react. New shooters are always welcome and everyone is willing to help others improve. A wealth of information can be found on the Internet. The BRSA is very pleased to again be hosting the BC Provincials Victoria Day weekend, 2014. For memberships and information about the BRSA please contact Rob McKeeman at 250426-2794. Memberships can also be purchased at any club match. Anyone is welcome. Our next match is June 22nd, check it out!

Cancer survivor visits Kootenays on world trip By Lorne Eckersley

Five years after his last stop in Creston, German cancer survivor Randolph Westphal arrived in town on Friday on his sixth trip around the world. He has one less dog and is now riding an electrically assisted bike, but he remains the picture of health for a man who, at 55, has had more surgeries than most people have had doctors’ appointments. Westphal was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1987. His lymph nodes were removed “I have 28 cancer surgeries behind me, but only four of them found more malignancies,” he smiled during his stopover, during which he was hosted at the Downtowner Motor Inn. Determined not to let skin cancer end his life, Westphal embarked on his first journey around the world, a bike tour that led to his amassing a current total of more than 205,000 kilometres of riding distance.

In 1996 he learned that cancer wouldn’t be the only challenge to threaten his life. A collision with an 18-wheel truck in Argentina led to a five-year stay in hospitals and rehab facilities. A severed leg was reattached and he lost his memory and sense of smell. Part of Westphal’s rehab program involved reading his diaries to help him piece together memories of his past. His injuries required another 30 surgeries. “Doctors told me I would never get out of the wheelchair,” he recalled. “Two years later, I was out of the wheelchair.” Eventually, he recovered sufficiently to get back on his bicycle and start riding again. “I like to show people I am an example of hope,” he said. Westphal gets no financial help from cancer agencies — he’s not on the road to collect money. He accepts, but does not solicit, donations to help cover his living costs. On this leg of his

With the dogs on the trailer, Westphal is towing a weight of about 270 kilograms. “I started a couple of

weeks ago and it was amazing how hot it was for this time of year,” he said. “Then there were three days of rain.” The 60-kilometre climb from Hope to Manning Park Lodge on Highway 3 still has him shaking his head. “That’s the longest hill I have ever done, anywhere in the world.” Westphal left Highway 3 and went to Kelowna and then Rev-

elstoke before heading back south through Creston. Battling the flu, he nevertheless set back out on Monday to head for Alberta, then to ride north to Alaska. “I’m 55 but I feel like I’m 100 right now,” he said. “But I like to motivate. A lot of people find hope in my story.”

And with such a bargain price, they were confident they had enough money left over to finish the house, and in their eyes it was really only a matter of paint, flooring, cabinetry, and finishing the plumbing and electrical. They submitted a low ball offer, it was accepted and they became proud owners. The rear-wheel-drive Subaru BRZ gives plenty of ‘vroom’ while still being economical.

Abundant room, with exquisite styling mark the latest version of the Chevrolet Equinox.

Overall: A rear-wheeldrive Subaru is a new thing, as is a small car with just two doors. Drivetrain: A gutsy 200-horsepower four-cylinder gets by with a little help from Toyota; A sixspeed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic send power to the rear wheels. Loyal Subie shoppers will be shocked to discover the new BRZ sports car’s driveshaft transmits power only to the opposite end of the vehicle. And one more surprise: Subaru has teamed up with Toyota, which owns a small stake in the company, to create the BRZ and the Scion FR-S. In Subaru’s case, its last effort was the 1990s-era premium-priced SVX. This time the BRZ faces formidable competition, other than from Scion. Hyundai’s Genesis coupe

Overall: Chevrolet can’t build enough of its hit Equinox tall wagon; now with more power, better handling and safety. Drivetrain: A 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder engine is joined by an optional 3.6-litre V6 available in the midrange and top-line models; optional all-wheel-drive is available across the range. The Equinox is Chevrolet’s biggest bright spot through all its restructuring and replanning, and it’s no mystery why. Clever touches abound, like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-over height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body area.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. It’s simply gorgeous and includes dual glove boxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of

is the leading contender, but the pricier Nissan 370Z is in the hunt as well. Then there are the V6 versions of the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger to be considered. In this class, one of the BRZ’s primary advantages is weight, or rather a lack of it. At just 1,275 kilograms, the Subaru weighs about 225 kilograms less than the Genesis and anywhere from 300500 kilograms less than any V6-equipped North American example. Although the extra-stiff platform is completely new, much of the suspension pieces originate with the Impreza and its performance-focused WRX STI variant. A quick steering ratio that’s more in tune with the BRZ’s sporty nature has also been installed. To aid turning and cornering capabilities, the engine has been positioned closer to the

center of the vehicle. Also helping out is a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that sits lower to the ground than similar powerplants due to its horizontally opposed design (two cylinders fire at a 180-degree angle to the other two), thus lowering the car’s centre of gravity. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for the BRZ, while a six-speed automatic is available. In the flesh, the BRZ looks flatout terrific with its properly planted stance, prominently bulging fenders and generously sized windshield. In back, the twin exhaust pipes encased in a blacked-out diffuser are a neat touch. Overall, the BRZ promises to shake up the sport coupe world and give both Subaru and Scion a serious sporty coupe to brag about.

handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over a 20-centimetre range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder reigns as a base engine, with its 9.2/6.1 (city/highway) l/100 km fuel economy that embarrasses most of the competition. New for 2013 is an optional 3.6-litre V6 with 301 horsepower that outclasses the old 3.0-litre unit by 45 horses. And it also earns the same 12.4/8.1 l/100 km-h rating as the old V6, which means no penalties for that extra power. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine as is allwheel-drive. A wide assortment of standard equipment (air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows/ locks/mirrors, etc.) comes in

base versions, as does a new 18-centimetre touchscreen to work the standard audio system; moving up into the top-line models adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18-inch wheels, extra trim, and premium audio. With its friendly interior and thrifty power options, including a new optional safety package with collision alert, lane-departure warning and rear-park assist for 2013, the Equinox projects a more fashionable presence and one that appears eager to pack up the gang and tackle the tasks at hand.

2013 model starting at

$

Engineered to perform. Designed to ignite.

The 2013 Subaru BRZ reminds you of everything you love about driving: the engine pushing you into the back of the seat, the confident feeling of the brakes and the connection with the steering wheel as you guide the car through the turns. It all begins with the classic sports car configuration - front engine, rear-wheel drive - but this smoking hot 2+2 sports coupe carves its own path with an astonishingly low centre of gravity and a sport-tuned suspension system to produce razor-sharp handling. Add in the adrenaline-infused response of an all-new SUBARU BOXER engine and you’ve got all the elements needs for the truly fantastic driving experience. To top it all off, the Subaru BRZ is loaded with convenience and entertainment features - it’s value-packed and versatile enough for everyday driving.
