Students attending George Elliot Secondary School in Lake Country won’t have to go far to figure out exactly who George Elliot was. The Lake Country Museum and George Elliot Secondary School have unveiled an exhibit at the school, taking a look at the man who the school is named after, and telling his story. The exhibit includes photographs and personal items belonging to Elliot including his wallet, professional teacher’s card and licenses, gym whistle, pen and notebook. The items on display were recently donated to the Lake Country Museum by the Elliot family. “This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about local history; rather than just thinking of their school as a name, they now can learn about the man behind the name and the values he stood for,” said Lea. “We look forward to working with the Lake Country Museum through future projects.” George Elliot was born in Paisley, Ontario in 1902 and moved to Vancouver when he was 12 years old. After completing his education, he taught in Mapes (Vanderhoof area) for six

months before securing his position at Winfield Public School in 1923. The school had two classes, the junior grades, 1 through 4 and senior grades, 5 through 8. Elliot served as teacher and principal at Winfield Public School for 26 years, now home to the Lake Country Boys and Girls Club and community organizations. Elliot married Dorothy Monford of Kelowna in 1924. They had two sons, Alan and Doug, and the family lived in the teacherage beside the school for a number of years. Elliot shared his love of sports with his sons and took the boys fishing in Joe Rich during summers. In addition to his work as teacher and
principal for the community, he was involved in many aspects of community service. He was a member of the Farmer’s Institute and he held the office of president and secretary of the Community Hall Board where he was instrumental in the building of the Winfield Memorial Hall. Elliot also organized the Eureka Branch of the Canadian Red Cross, the first in British Columbia. Although Elliot had asthma, he was a skilled athlete, a dedicated coach and umpire. He was one of the organizers of the Rural Schools Track Meets. He had a passion for baseball and was the captain of the local team for several years. It is said that he secured his job as teach-
er at the Winfield Public School when Tom Duggan, secretary of the school board, realized that he played baseball in Vancouver and would be an asset to the local team. Elliot also enjoyed playing badminton at the old Seaton Packinghouse. In 1949, at the age of 48, Elliot died during treatment of asthma in Kelowna General Hospital. Derek Lea, principal of George Elliot Secondary School, worked closely with the Lake Country Museum to develop the exhibit.
Museum curator Dan Bruce said the school played a big part in getting the exhibit together. “This is a significant exhibit for the museum and the school,” said Bruce. “George Elliot was instrumental in the community-building of Lake Country and the opportunity to present his history at the school named after him has been incredibly rewarding. The museum especially thanks museum volunteer Karen Gibbons for designing the exhibit.” The exhibit opening
was hosted by George Elliot Secondary School principal Derek Lea and staff, and attended by Elliot’s son Alan (of Kelowna), daughter-in-law Jean (son Doug died in Winfield), and grandchildren Jim (Winfield), and Dave and Audrey (Kelowna), museum staff and directors and Mayor James Baker. For more information about the exhibit or local history, you can contact the Lake Country Museum at 250-766-0111 or go to the web site at www.lakecountrymuseum.com.
Council upholds bylaws, despite staff recommendation KEVIN PARNELL Lake Country council has gone against a recommendation from its staff and will force a veteran Lake Country builder to go back and alter the construction of
a massive house in Okanagan Centre to bring it into compliance with Lake Country bylaws. That’s despite the fact that the builder—who requested his name be withheld from publication—was erroneous-
ly given the OK to build the house from staff at the District of Lake Country (DLC). DLC staff originally approved plans for the house in Okanagan Centre but after it was built to the fram-
ing stage, including shingling the roof, the DLC realized the eave of the home’s roof encroached on the allowable two metre setback from the neighbouring property line. Under DLC bylaws,
an eave may encroach two feet into that allowable zone but the district found that this particular eave was encroaching about three feet. DLC staff told council it shared the blame with the builder, admit-

New truck designed for urban firefighting The Lake Country fire department has a new tool designed to fight fires in urban/forested areas. The interface fire engine is specifically equipped to handle fires that are located where homes are built next to forests. The engine apparatus has the benefit of higher clearances, 4x4 traction, and carries 800 gallons (3000 L) of water. It has a powerful pump that can relay high volumes of water long distances 76and deploy multiple
hand lines or water cannons in situations where it is the primary attack vehicle. Besides being an interface engine, it can function as a regular engine for residential and commercial emergencies and is equipped with insta-chains for winter operation. The truck is staffed by one driver/engineer, one officer, and three firefighters from Lake Country’s volunteer paid-on-call membership. The truck will also

Letnick assigned to intergovernmental affairs by Clark ALISTAIR WATERS The Central Okanagan’s representation at the B.C. cabinet table has decreased. But, while it will have two fewer cabinet ministers than it did prior to the May 14 election, if the B.C. Liberals have their way it will add the most powerful voice of all in the B.C. cabinet, Premier Christy Clark. Clark plans to run in a byelection in the Westside-Kelowna riding in a vote that could happen as soon as mid-July. Of the three local Liberals elected here last month, only Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson was reap-
pointed to cabinet on Friday. He has retained his forests, lands and natural resource operations portfolio. Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick, the former agriculture minister, was replaced in that portfolio by Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm. Letnick, however, was appointed Clark’s parliamentary secretary for intergovernmental affairs. Letnick, who only learned of his new position Thursday afternoon, said he has yet to find out what it will entail. A government news release said the position of parliamentary secretary to the premier for
Expected guidance ENCROACHMENT A1 both parties had made a mistake. “It’s mind-boggling that we are sitting here talking about a variance on a house that is three-quarters built and now we’re trying to find out what to do with this mess,” said Lake Country Coun. Rob Geier. DLC staff recommended that council allow the eaves to protrude into the setback by the extra foot, which would keep the builder from having to go back several steps in the building process to make the eaves smaller. “I apologize for putting us all in this position,” the builder told council. “But I paid a fee of $5,000 and for that fee I think I have the right to expect some level of guidance through the
process. Your staff obviously failed but it’s a shared responsibility and I’m here to take my share of it. But I don’t believe its fair that I should have the whole burden.” But council wasn’t in a sharing mood and decided to hold the developer accountable for the mistake, even though staff said not allowing the variance would likely affect staff workload and could be an expensive venture for the developer. Council denied the recommendation from staff and told the developer he would need to make the changes and pay for them himself. “To cut a roof off that has already been shingled is not an easy chore,” the developer said. newsroom @lakecountrynews.net
intergovernmental affairs will have him working with the provincial Intergovernmental Relations Secretariat in the premier’s office to further the interests of B.C. at intergovernmental events. He said he will talk with other MLAs who have held the position in the past, such as Chilliwack’s John Les, to learn more about what he will be doing. It is unclear if Letnick will be able to resume his chairmanship of a legislative committee Clark appointed him to before he entered cabinet that was in charge of looking at the future of health care in B.C. “We’ll have to wait until the committee appointments are announced next week,” said Letnick. On Friday, he wasn’t
sure if his position as a parliamentary secretary would preclude that. He had to give up the chairmanship of the committee when he became agriculture minister. Despite his departure from cabinet, Letnick said he was “fired up” by the result of the election and ready get back to work as MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country. Thomson said he is ready to “hit the ground running” once he is sworn back into cabinet on Monday. He said he expects to continue the work he started as the minister in the last Liberal government, noting both the environmental and economic impact his ministry has on B.C. “I’m really pleased with the confidence the premier has shown in me
by re-appointing me to this ministry,” Thomson said following Clark’s introduction of her new cabinet Friday. While he is disappointed Letnick will not be rejoining him at the cabinet table, Thomson said he expects Letnick will play a big role in his position as parliamentary secretary to the premier for intergovernmental affairs. He said they worked closely together in the past, and he does not expect that to change.
Three First Nations students at George Elliot Secondary are Central Okanagan School District award winners. The school district held its First Nations graduation ceremony last month with 180 graduates being honoured. Six awards were handed out, and three of them went to First Nations students at George Elliot, according to teacher and Lake Country Coun. Rob Geier.
The awards represent six traditional Fist Nations spiritual realms. Tyson Oland (physical), Miranda Isnardy (emotional) and Stephanie Bandura (intellectual) were all honoured. “We have an amazing First Nations program over at George Elliot. We work really hard with our First Nations students,” Geier told District of Lake Country council at its June 4. meeting.

Expense account cleanup must continue A s she unveiled her new cabinet, Premier Christy Clark promised a “lineby-line” review of government spending to deliver a balanced budget this year. Statements such as this would have more credibility if politicians subjected their own personal spending to the same scrutiny. That’s still not happening in B.C. Expense accountability has come a long way in the last year, thanks mainly to the work of now-departed Auditor General John Doyle, who swung the cobweb-covered door open on B.C.’s secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. Chaired by the speaker and run by senior MLAs from both parties, the committee had been doing pretty much whatever it wanted with MLAs’ own expenses. Doyle’s audit found that MLA credit card
BC Views
Tom Fletcher bills were being paid without receipts, part of a lax accounting system that included inaccurate bank records and inadequate management of the legislature gift shop and dining room. The operating budget of the legislature and constituencies runs to more than $60 million a year. Now-retired speaker Bill Barisoff asked the auditor to give a pass to the $119,000 annual allowance for each of the 85 constituency offices. Transfer amounts and payroll expenses were verified, but constituency
expenses were not, likely because these records weren’t kept either. I’m not suggesting that there has been any misuse of public funds. The point is we don’t know, and the notion of an “honour system” for politicians’ expenses has become unacceptable. A similar toxic tale has been unfolding in the Senate in Ottawa. It has its own secretive committee called the Board of Internal Economy, which was forced into the open after trying to sweep Senator Mike Duffy’s housing claims under the red rug of the Senate chamber. Duffy has lived in Ottawa for decades, first as a TV host and then senator, but he decided the rules were loose enough that he could claim his summer place in Prince Edward Island as his principal residence. An audit has also found he was claiming living expenses in Ottawa while campaigning for the
Conservatives back east. It turns out the key ingredient in an honour system is honour. This mess goes back more than a century in B.C. and Canada, and has its roots in the British Parliament, where MPs and Lords had a system of claiming all sorts of expenses, including construction of a “duck house” and maintenance of the moat around an Honourable Member’s castle. Many years ago, British MPs convinced themselves that they were underpaid, and rather than create a public fuss by giving themselves a big raise, they would be able to top it up by claiming up to 250 pounds at a time without receipts. Cheers! You can imagine how well that worked out. As one observer put it, the system was not only open to abuse, it was actually designed for it. Here in B.C., the next step is obvious. If you go
to the website of Alberta Premier Alison Redford, you can easily find the link to her detailed expense reports, itemized for travel, meals, hotel rooms and so forth. Alberta cabinet ministers provide the same disclosure. B.C. cabinet ministers’ travel expenses are now reported, but only as an occasional lump sum. As a result of Doyle’s revelations last summer, B.C.’s Legislative Assembly Management Committee now meets in public, with transcripts of proceedings available. But MLA expenses are still not itemized. Total expenditures are being reported on a quarterly basis, but with no detail to explain why some MLAs have much higher totals than others. It’s time to sweep out the cobwebs. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca
“Amazing, isn’t it, that it takes $10 billion for physicists to come up with the same metaphor that theologians hypothesized centuries ago.” “I don’t buy that religious crap,” he snaps, and stomps away. Over many years, I’ve had the same outcome in conversations with environmentalists, biologists, psychologists, mathematicians, geologists. As soon as I connect their science to anything religious, they’re sure I believe in an old man sitting on a cloud, strumming a harp, occasionally firing thunderbolts at miscreants below. They discarded that notion long ago. They don’t stick around long enough to discover that I don’t believe in that kind of God either. For the record, I believe wholeheartedly, whole-bodiedly, that Something exists—

ere’s a bit of good news— the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) 2013 Better Life Index just ranked Canada third among 36 countries (34 OECD countries plus Brazil and Russia), up from sixth place last year. The mission of the OECD is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world. Since the index’s inception, Canada has ranked near or at the top of each measured area, together with Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United States. The OECD Better Life Index assesses housing, income, jobs, community, education, environment, civic engagement, health, life satisfaction, safety and work-life balance. Key findings in this year’s index are: • Canadians are more satisfied with their lives than the OECD average, with 82 per cent of people saying they have more positive experien-

This score is higher than the OECD average of 497, making Canada one of the strongest OECD countries in terms of student skills. • Life expectancy at birth in Canada is 81 years, one year higher than the OECD average of 80 years. • Across Canada, the level of atmospheric PM10—tiny air-pollutant particles small enough to enter and

A big part of this national success has to be attributed to the commitment and support provided at the local level by community organizations and volunteers across the country. In Kelowna-Lake Country, we are blessed with a number of top notch community organizations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others. TAYLOR FROM A4 Something which I happen to call God. I don’t know what it is. I can’t define it. Occasionally, I get a glimpse of that Great Whatever. I spend the rest of my thinking moments trying to fit those glimpses into a coherent pattern. I’m a lot clearer about what I don’t believe anymore. I don’t believe that Something meddles in natural affairs. It doesn’t cause tsunamis and tornadoes. It doesn’t make buildings fall and factories explode. And it certainly doesn’t save one or two favoured souls because they happen to recite the right passwords. I don’t believe that Something keeps an accounting ledger, recording every word and deed in plus and minus columns. It does not dispense cancer and famine as punishment; it does not dole out megadollars as rewards. It follows, then, that a Great Accountant does not dispatch us to eternal bliss or eternal punishment after a final audit. I do not believe that
the Great Whatever lives outside the natural world. It is vested—invested—in everything around us. Including us. And yet, whatever It is, loves me. As the old gospel song says: “Even me.” I don’t believe that Whatever wound up the universe in 4004 B.C. and set it ticking on a predetermined path. Even earthworms make choices. They are not mindless robots. Neither are we. If we genuinely have free will, then not even God can know in advance what we will choose, and what effects the spreading ripples of our choices will have. I do not believe that this universal presence
can be defined by a single text. Not even if you call it the Holy Bible. The Bible itself is not holy. It is the record of one people’s fumbling encounters with The Holy. It reflects cultural understandings (or misunderstandings) of the period when each part was written. I have not stopped believing. I have simply shed some accretions that once got in the way of truly sensing the reality of God’s presence. Whatever God is, that Whatever has become the absolute constant in my life. A personal injury claim is, essentially, a legal right to compensation. What are you being compensated for? Your losses. The bigger your losses, the bigger your claim. Conversely, the smaller your losses, the smaller your claim. There is no “bonus.” There is only recovery of loss. When you factor in the one-third fees you are going to pay your lawyer, you in fact end up significantly “in the red.” Your best hope is to recover compensation for two-thirds of your losses. The bigger your losses, the further you end up in the red, because more and more is taken by your lawyer in fees. For a very small claim, with losses of only $9,000, you end up “in the red” about $3,000 ($9,000 minus lawyer fees). For a larger claim, with losses of $90,000, you end up “in the red” about $30,000. Who benefits from maximizing your losses? Your lawyer. Who loses? You. That’s the dollars and cents argument for keeping your losses as small as possible. It just so happens that there is also a legal duty to do so. It’s called a “duty to mitigate” A very recent decision of the Supreme Court of British Columbia quotes
the following authoritative statement of the law: “Mitigation goes to limit recovery based on an unreasonable failure of the injured party to take reasonable steps to limit his or her loss. A plaintiff in a personal injury action has a positive duty to mitigate but if a defendant’s position is that a plaintiff could reasonably have avoided some part of the loss, the defendant bears the onus of proof on that issue…” Turning that into English, you have an actual legal obligation to take reasonable steps to end up as little “in the red” as possible. If you fail to do so, ICBC won’t have to reimburse you for the losses that you could have made smaller had you acted reasonably. For example, if your injury disables you from returning to your very heavy work as a drywall installer, but you would be able to handle less physically heavy work such as working at a desk or working as a salesperson, you have a legal duty to try to get those other jobs. for that portion. You will end up with zero compensation for that portion of your losses. People who are laid off and qualify for Employment Insurance are required to look for work. The same thing goes for people claiming compensation for injury losses. The difference is that the Employment Insurance system is not going to hire a lawyer to cross-examine you on how hard you tried to find another job. This “duty to mitigate” is nothing to worry about. It’s not some “dark magic” that ICBC will be able to use to kill your claim. It’s all about acting reasonably. If you are the least bit unsure, get advice early on about what steps you could be taking to mitigate your losses and eliminate the possibility that ICBC can successfully “blame the victim” on this point. This column is intended to provide general information about injury claims. It is not a substitute for retaining a lawyer to provide legal advice specifically pertaining to your case. Roundup unacceptable Open letter to The Hon. James Baker and members of council: I am writing to protest in the strongest possible terms the spraying of toxic substances on the public ‘greenspace’ in Okanagan Centre. The use of Roundup to control/eliminate poison ivy on the lakefront is absolutely not acceptable. Roundup is a poisonous chemical mix that poses a health threat not only to humans. It is particularly lethal to amphibians and to a lesser extent fish. It is toxic to earthworms, beneficial insects, birds and mammals and it destroys the vegetation they depend on for food and shelter. The active ingredient glyphosate (and Monsanto does not have to reveal the precise composition of Roundup so who knows what else it contains) reduces the growth of beneficial soil-dwelling fungi. Roundup shows adverse effects in all standard categories of toxicological testing, including medium-term toxicity, long-term toxicity, genetic damage, effects on reproduction and carcinogenicity. Spraying Roundup on the foreshore of Lake Okanagan ensures contamination of the land and the lake water and thus puts human and non-human life forms at risk. Roundup kills all the green plants it touches. I understand some
people’s concern about the effects of the rhus toxicodendron plant. But the plant grows near the path in specific areas and is rooted into the soil. It is easily identifiable. There is warning signage. Humans can avoid it. The plant does not jump up and rub itself over selected victims. Children can be taught to identify the plant and give it a wide berth. Babies can be kept away by their caregivers. And if (heaven forbid) someone should contract the itching blisters of poison ivy and there are a few days of discomfort, isn’t it comforting to know that the reaction is relatively benign and will pass, unlike the pollution of earth and water that results from the application of Roundup? As much as Monsanto would like us to believe Roundup is harmless, numerous studies point out that it is not. And how can a corporation that derives 50 per cent of its corporate profit from the sale of Roundup be expected to be transparent? The use of toxic chemicals to enhance a ‘greenspace’ is ironic and counter-intuitive at best; woefully misguided and ignorant at worst. I ask you to please reconsider the removal of the poison ivy. And certainly please do not spray Roundup along the lake. Ellen Turnbull, Okanagan Centre
Federal grant money available CANNAN FROM A5 Every day, in thousands of communities across the country, Canadian seniors are making a difference by sharing their diverse skills, knowledge and experiences with others through volunteerism and mentoring. In honour of their contribution, on May 22, Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors), launched the 2013–14 New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) call for proposals for community-based projects. Organizations may receive up to $25,000 in grant funding per year on projects that focus on one or more of the following objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social par-
ticipation and capital assistance. Any local organizations that have an idea for a project can to go to seniors.gc.ca to take advantage of this call for proposals. The deadline for applications is July 5, 2013. NHSP funding is an excellent opportunity for organizations to promote the well-being of seniors by helping them to maintain a high quality of life and continue to be active, participating members of our community. This year alone, the federal government will provide more than $33 million to support 1,750 community-based projects for seniors across the country. In fact, since its beginning, the NHSP has funded more than 12,200 projects in hun-
dreds of communities that help foster social participation and inclusion of seniors in communities across Canada. Participation by seniors in our society is vital to the wellbeing of our communities and it is important to acknowledge the important role they play. Not only do we all benefit from their wisdom and experience, their contribution ensures Canada will continue to earn a top spot on the OECD’s Better Life Index. Filmmaker decides to give Canadian premier in Lake Country
The Life After Laundry Ladies Club of Lake Country has secured the Canadian premier of a feel-good movie produced in London and written, directed and starring women over the age of 50. The Power of Three, has been called a “delightful anecdote about friendship, perseverance and hope that celebrates the strength of the older woman,” by Studio
Magazine in the UK. The film has been an Official Selection and audience favourite at the Women’s International Film Festival (Miami), the Brooklyn Girl Film Festival (New York) and the Toronto Independent Film Festival. The movie has had premieres in London and Johannesburg but not in Canada. Film producer Ann Cameron was intro-
duced to Lake Country last year when she travelled to Oyama to recuperate after being hit by a car. It was her time in Oyama that led to the movie premiere coming to the Okanagan. “We decided to team up with the Life After Laundry Ladies Club to combine our Canadian premiere with a fundraiser for charity,” said Cameron. “I came to Oyama to
recuperate last May after being hit by a car. The wonderful people I’ve met in the Okanagan convinced me that all the hard working women here deserve a feel good movie that honours and celebrates the older woman,” Cameron said. The Power of Three is a comedy filmed in London, England and starring three 50-something actresses: Toyah Willcox (British), Rob-
in Craig (Canadian) and Brumilda Van Rensburg (South African). The three friends, separated by time and distance, rediscover the bonds of friendship and reunite to improve their lives. Cameron says the movie is the first ever that stars, was written by, directed by, scored by and produced by women over 50. Canadian Craig, is a veteran of Wind at My Back, Degrassi, the Shaw
Festival and many other engagements. She is no stranger to the Okanagan having spent her childhood summers with her grandparents in Oyama. Craig will be a special guest at the premiere at the Creekside Theatre June 29. The Life After Laundry Ladies Club officially started in January of this year and is a growing group of women of all ages. The group’s goal
is to help the community of Lake Country in a variety of ways, from donating to charity, to helping out residents who may have fallen on hard times. Tickets are at Intrigue winery, which is also providing wine. For more information find the Life After Laundry Ladies Club on Facebook, click on events, or email lifeafterlaundryladiesclub@hotmail.com.
Museum honour Japanese Canadian pioneers of Lake Country with exhibit
The Lake Country Heritage and Cultural Society has announced that the Lake Country Museum and Archives has been awarded funding for a series of events in 2013. Kakonosedai: A Century of Community, will celebrate the history of the Japanese Canadian Pioneers of Lake Country and their descendants. The events are funded by the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation of B.C. and the museum is working in partnership with the Kelowna-Kasugai Sister City Association and with the Nikkei National Museum of Burnaby to present the events. The events include a major exhibition at the museum, Kakonosedai:
A Century of Community, featuring the history of the Japanese Canadian pioneers. The exhibition will open Aug. 10, 2013. Coinciding with the exhibition opening is the museum’s book launch of Kakonosedai, with copies available at the museum after the opening. The museum’s feature event, Centrepiece, will include Japanese performers, displays booths, and traditional food. In September, the museum will present a lecture at the Creekside Theatre, at 10241 Bottom Wood Lake Road. Kakonosedai: A Century of Community is a continuing project, which tells the story of the first Japanese Canadian pioneers in Lake Country and their ex-
periences during the period from 1899 to preWorld War II (1939). The events and book highlight the courage, perseverance, and resilience of these first settlers, according to Dr. Duane Thomson, the museum
president. “This is a significant project for the museum and for the community as a whole,” said Thomson. “The Japanese Canadians were some of the earliest settlers of Lake Country and the oppor-
tunity to work with their children and grandchildren to present their history has been incredibly rewarding.” Keep informed of upcoming events at www. lakecountrymuseum. com.

The proprietor of Gatzke Orchards in Oyama, Alan Gatzke will be recognized as an Honorary Fellow of the College along with Ernie Philip (cultural awareness) and Barry Lapointe (aviation) for contributions and leadership in the their area of work. “I am proud to welcome Ernie, Alan and Barry as Honorary Fellows of Okanagan College,” said president Jim Hamilton. “When I think about the people who have made a difference in our communities, from Kelowna to Oyama and extending to the Shuswap, each of the 2013 recipients are shining examples of people who have dedicated to improving their communities.” Gatzke was presented as the Honorary Fellow at the College’s afternoon ceremony on Saturday where he addressed the graduating class of business students at Okanagan College. As proprietor of Gatzke Orchards in Oyama, Gatzke is a third genera-
tion farmer whose roots in the Okanagan extend back to 1929, when his grandfather began the family business. Deeply embedded in the agricultural history of the Okanagan, Gatzke Orchards is one of the region’s oldest producers of tree fruits. In the 80 years since Leo Gatzke began farming in Oyama, the business has adapted to meet the needs of the people and land it serves. As one of the areas early adopters of agritourism, Gatzke Orchards is committed to corporate social responsibility and sustainability in all forms of the business. Gatzke’s vision for the family business has resulted in a thriving local hub that includes a farm market, café, bakery, accommodations and venues for concerts, weddings and special events. Gatzke has also served as a board director of Tourism Kelowna, where he has helped move the sustainability agenda forward through his unique insight into economic diversification.
A pair of Lake Country teenagers have made it through the first phase in a contest being held by Mountain Dew that could see the duo win one per cent of sales of a new drink being introduced by the company. A video promoting the new drink, produced by Lake Country teens Erik Madsen, 18, and 16-year-old Wynden Danylowich, had the most online views of 118 videos produced across Canada. In fact it more than doubled the next most popular video in the contest, which is moving into its second phase, judging by Mountain Dew company representatives. “We didn’t expect this,” said Madsen. “We had such a good team and we had so much effort put into it. We were nervous because we were supposed to get it out the week before we did but within three days we went from not having a video to being in first place. It was quite ridiculous.” The video, called Rise

If the teens win, they will win one per cent of the sales of the new drink over the next two years.

My dog is in a large fenced yard. Is she getting enough exercise?
Canines are designed by nature for movement. If your dog does not get regular aerobic exercise, she is more likely to develop arthritis and other debilitating conditions that affect the bones, joints, muscles and internal organs. Also many behavior problems in dogs are due to a lack of physical and mental activity. Your dog, like yourself, should get a minimum of 20 minutes of sustained heart-thumping exercise three times per week. Slow walking on leash is not sufficient. You need to do power walking or off leash activity such as swimming, fetch, frisbee, agility competition or biking (using a special dog bike leash). The bottom line is: even if you have a huge fenced-in backyard your dog will not get the exercise she needs unless you get out in the yard with her and engage her in activities that will give her a consistent cardiovascular workout.

Is now a good time to buy? How is the market compared to this time last year?
Central Okanagan sales are up 10.8% this May compared to May 2012. It all comes down to one simple question… How much real estate do you wish you owned today that you would have bought ten years ago? With whispers of rising rates, variety of choice, good prices, pride of ownership, a forced savings plan, and return on investment are just a few reasons why you should purchase a home in today’s market. Although the answer seems simple, real estate planning and entering the market now are great ideas for both ownership and investment purposes. The key to successfully planning ahead and taking advantage of the market is to have a knowledgeable Realtor on your team, working with you and helping you to capitalize on this opportunity. Let’s now fast-forward and ask ourselves a similar question; “How much real estate are you going to wish you had bought in 2013?” Pretty simple isn’t it?

What if a permanent tooth is coming in and the baby tooth has not fallen out yet?
This is a very common problem, especially in the lower front incisors. If the tooth is loose, the dentist may need to extract the baby tooth. In either case, it is best to make an appointment so that the situation can be assessed and the best course of action taken for your child. Dr. Jung did part of her residency at BC Children’s Hospital in addition to having worked at a private pediatric practice in Vancouver in 1997. I need bifocals to help me see in the distance and to read. Can I still wear contacts?
Absolutely! There are a few options that will allow you to get out from behind your frames and into contacts that help you see clearly in the distance and up close. Multifocal contact lenses have both distance and reading power in the same lens, with the distance power in the center and the reading power in the edge of the lens, or vice versa. This means that you are always looking through both powers, but your brain learns to tune into the power that you need for your current task. The other option is monovision, which means correcting your dominant eye for distance and your non-dominant eye for near. With information about your line of work, your hobbies and your visual needs, we can help you choose the type of correction that would be most successful!

Advantages of a front garden
Here are some points to consider if you are planning a front garden makeover or installation this year Front gardens are generally transitional areas between very public spaces and private space inside your home. A front garden is used by all kinds of people, from those you know intimately to those you don’t know at all. What a front garden should do is to welcome visitors to your home and reflect something of your personality.
You may need a path to the front door from more than one area: driveway, sidewalk, rear garden
Reflect Your Personality The journey through your front garden is the first impression visitors have of your home. The space you create should reveal something of your personality; flamboyant, classically stylish, modern, practical, inviting or reserved. Create An Entrancing Entrance! The entrance to your home is probably one of its most important elements. The route to the front door should be clear and safe.
for example. Any changes in level along the pathway should
be safe and comfortable and the path should be wide enough for 2 people to walk along it side by side. Be wary of not using the most direct and obvious route from street to door. People are lazy and will always take the shortest path, even if this means tramping through your rose bed! Enhance the Value of Your Home There is no doubt that an attractive and well-maintained front garden enhances the curb appeal of a property. Simple renovation work can be effective to improve the appearance of a garden. For example: defining the edges of existing planting beds, thinning out overgrown and crowded plants or applying organic mulch to plant beds. Front gardens are used and viewed year-round so it may be wise to incorporate some evergreen varieties for winter colour and interest.

Other singers who took part in the finale were Luke Atherton, Rigel Seedhouse and Timely Wonders. “It was a fantastic night,” said organizer Jennifer Boal. “The performances were outstanding and the judges had a tough time choosing which two performers would go away with the prizes offered this year.” Boal held the event for the second straight year and it became a popular night in Lake Country, with a wide variety of talented singer-songwriters stepping up to the mic. “Thank you to all
of the performers who entertained us at our March, April, and May Open Mic nights,” she said. “The talent was simply exceptional and has been celebrated throughout this competition. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our musicians. As well, a special thank you goes out to all of our judges including Kathy Scott, Neil Macritchie, Louise Boisvert, Grant Lawrence, and special guest judge, Alexandria Colter.” Regular open mic nights will continue throughout the summer on the first Wednesday of every month at the Lake Country Coffee House with the next

Random partners yields fun tennis tourney The Lake Country Tennis Club held another action-packed doubles tennis tournament last Friday night under the lights at the new tennis courts on Woodsdale Road in Lake Country. Partners were drawn at random in the event, so players never knew who they would be matched up against, making for some interesting combinations. Heavy winds added an extra challenge to the night, as chasing wild, wind-aided curve balls became part of the play. After three hours of action, the top players emerged. At the end of the night out of 27 tough competitors Lynne Blake took first place overall with 12 games won.
In a two way tie for second with 11 games won was Ben Johnson, who was the top male player, tied with Shannon Monssen. There was a three way tie for third place with 10 games won between Steve Shaffrick, Bonnie Ayriss and Julia Ambrozy. Overall winner Lynne Blake was elated with her victory. “The night was very challenging and I’d like to thank my win to my exceptional partners who I got matched up with,” she said. “Jim, Julia, Alex and Darlene all played excellent and carried me through.” The next tournament at the Lake Country tennis Club is scheduled for September.
