COTR seeking farming program input BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The College of the Rockies is seeking input on an agriculture program that will debut in February. An open house for the Columbia Basin Trust-funded Community Agriculture Learning Needs Assessment (CALNA) will run 4-5:30 p.m. June 17 at the Creston campus, allowing a chance to ask questions and offer suggestions. “The meeting will offer people of all ages the chance to share their perspectives on the kinds of agriculture/food security learning supports that would most benefit them,” said Laura Hannant, COTR facilitator of partnerships for community development. The 10-month program, funded with seed money from the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation, and Technology, will start in February 2014, and will be one of four in Canada.

The name derives from the Greek words skleros (hard) and derma (skin), and reflects the disfigurement experienced in scleroderma due to increased production and deposits of collagen in the skin. There is no known cure, and individuals with scleroderma face high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as substantial disability and impaired functioning. Research on finding a cure for scleroderma, as well as on ways to improve quality of life for people with scleroderma, is of tremendous importance. Until recently, little was being done to address these problems, and the Scleroderma Society of Canada and the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group partnership were formed to change that. Xeriscaping reduces West Creston fire need for both water protection a step closer and maintenance BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

West Creston appears to be inching closer to having a formal fire protection service. Area C director Larry Binks said on Monday that he has just received Regional District of Central Kootenay approval on the wording for a petition that, if successful, will tax residents at a rate of 69 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. Binks said he plans to go door-to-door to collect signatures. “I don’t see this is as a political issue,” he said. “I think the people of my area deserve fire protection and I’m doing every-

thing I can to make that happen.” Meanwhile, the West Creston Fire Protection Society, a volunteer group, continues to collect funds to build a fire hall. Negotiations are underway to acquire one of several building sites under consideration, Binks said. The area has been without a building since a storm two years ago destroyed the structure that housed a fire truck. On May 28, society president Jim McLeod and operations director Ed Teague accepted a $5,000 contribution from BC Hydro. “We recognize the importance of building a new facility

that will allow quick and effective access to safety equipment needed to respond to emergency urban wild land interface fires as efficiently as possible,” said Diane Tammen, BC Hydro community relations manager, as she handed over the cheque. A new building will incorporate energy efficient, cost effective fixtures including energy efficient lighting, a high efficiency heat pump system for heating and cooling, and high performance window installations. McLeod said the society is ready to begin construction as soon as a building site is acquired, possibly as early as this summer.

Art festival part of Wynndel Canada Day celebrations BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Queen Elizabeth has sent her regrets, but organizers are continuing full steam ahead with plans for a Canada Day weekend celebration in Wynndel. The O Canada Art Festival will actually run from June 29-July 6, but Canada Day weekend will be chock full of events for the family, with a focus on the arts. “We will also be shipping the Statue of Liberty necklace to New York on July 4,” organizer Sandy Kunze said. For two years, Kunze has been coordinating the project, with individuals crafting large clay beads, glazed and fired, which are now strung to create a giant necklace. “I thought it would be a nice touch to invite Queen Elizabeth to our community, so I sent off a letter of invitation a few months ago,” Kunze said. A letter of regret is now in Kunze’s possession, written by the Queen’s lady in waiting. The letter writer explains that the Queen will be unable to attend, but adds that she was particularly interested in some of the events, as well as the creation of the Statue of Liberty necklace. The invitation and response are now framed and will be hung in the art show. “We will be showcasing the works of two

prominent Canadian artists, local artists, artist demos, an artisan market and other activities such as a petting zoo for the children,” Kunze said. The art show, From Far and Wide, will feature presentations from two prominent Canadian artists. Yukon’s Sandra Grace Storey and Randall Finnerty of Montreal will be traveling to what Kunze likes to describe as “our quaint little community”. Both will be conducting workshops at the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre in Creston later in the week. Finnerty is a visual artist who has been working for a number of years with charcoal on paper, portraying a cast of animal and human characters that are often set in wilderness environments or on the periphery of human settlements. Storey makes clay objects that resemble animals or the human figure to evoke a single moment within the ongoing narrative of human existence. In conjunction with From Far and Wide, Kunze is inviting Idaho artists to submit works for a Without Borders art show. Among the many planned events are an opening reception, music concerts, demonstrations by local artists, a wine and art bus tour, carnival games and a petting zoo and a lion dance with Red Jade Martial Arts. Let’s get one thing out of the way to start. It’s xeriscape, not zeroscape. The term for low-maintenance, low-water-demand landscaping is often mis-said, and understandably so, because zero sounds like the ideal amount of effort that landscaping should require. Xeros, however, is Greek for “dry” and the word “xeriscape” simply refers to a gardening form

that minimizes the use of water. Promoted as an alternative for grass lawns, xeriscaping makes full use of plants, often native to the area, that require little or no water that doesn’t fall from the sky. But the increasingly popular approach to landscaping also adds interest, inviting creativity that extends far beyond the use of a single type of grass, an endless battle against dandelions and weekly rounds with a lawnmower and weed-whacker. RCMP receive 58 calls during week BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP responded to 58 calls for service from June 3-9, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. June 3 •Police are attempting to find the Quebec owner of a wallet that was found on Highway 3. •A driver backed into a vehicle at Pitt Road and Blackmore Road, then drove off after causing minor damage. •A Lister Road resident found threats left on voice mail in April. •A driver was verbally warned about tailgating, passing a vehicle, then hitting his brakes near Summit Creek after the complainant refused to agree to testify in court. •A male and female reportedly involved in a physical dispute on

Eighth Avenue South left in a green van before police arrived. June 4 •A Vancouver Street tenant was in a dispute with the landlord, who said the property was left dirty and refused to return the damage deposit. They were referred to the Residential Tenancy Branch. •When police conducted a wellbeing check on a female in a Highway 3 residence they found her in medical distress. Emergency health services transported her to hospital. •A driver who was attempting to pass on a double solid line on Highway 3A cut back into the driving lane to avoid an oncoming vehicle. He clipped the vehicle he was attempting to pass and was issued a traffic violation ticket as a memento of the occasion. •A Wiebe Road resident was advised to post “no trespassing” signs after reporting quads have been on her property. •Police were unable to locate a red Chrysler Intrepid reported to driving erratically on Highway3. •A female at the hospital who appeared to have been injured in an altercation refused to co-operate with police. June 5 •Police investigated a report of a legally blind elderly male driving his vehicle. They learned he stays on his driveway and doesn’t go out on public roads. •After being called to an Erickson Road residence about a male smashing items during a breakup argument, police found no assault took place. They referred the case to provincial authorities, though, because

Xeriscaping From page 3 Landscape designers build in features that make the end result look far different than an artful arrangement of perennials and shrubs. With the addition of a variety of mulches or decorative rocks to cover space between plants, a mundane lawn can be transformed into a Japanese-style garden or even a Zen-like meditation space. In front of the College of the Rockies, on 16th Avenue South, lies what is perhaps Creston’s best-known xeriscape project, designed by staff and students at the college, with consultation by Beltane Nursery owner Evan Davies. Once the design was created, the next step was to move or supplement the existing soil to create what amount to miniature hills and valleys, creating the base for a look that would be interesting right from the start, but also become more appealing as the plants matured. Landscape fabric is a xeriscapist’s best friend. It reduces weed growth but allows for rainwater to soak through. It also allows for evaporation, important because few plants like to sit in saturated soil. Non-plant features are typically created first.

He was remanded in custody pending a hearing.

The college plan included a “dry river”, a riverlike formation created by the placement of large and small rocks laid to look much like a riverbed, one that would never have water flowing through. Crossing that “river”, of course, is a lovely pedestrian bridge, made entirely of wood. With the completion of those elements, plants were set by making slits in the landscape fabric. Varieties were selected for their propensity to send out deep roots to find water, for their visual appeal and because they were particularly suited to the local climate. With the planting complete, a generous layer of bark mulch was spread on top. The mulch provides an insulating layer to keep the ground surface temperature steadier, allows rainwater to filter through to the ground, and discourages weed growth. The weeds that do start are easy to pull as there is no soil in which the roots can anchor. The end result serves as a demonstration garden for local residents to see firsthand. And the project could prove contagious. A similar project is expected to soon be underway in front of the college’s neighbor to the south, Creston and District Public Library. Expect to see another example of how low-maintenance, environmentally responsible xeriscaping can create a great alternative to grass lawns.

Once again, BC Hydro has stepped up as a major funder of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. Community relations manager Diane Tammen was in Creston recently to hand over a cheque for $407,522. “The work undertaken by the CVWMA supports BC Hydro’s long-term environmental goals and aligns with the province’s Clean Energy Act, which supports environmental stewardship in our province,” Tammen said. The money will be administered by Ducks Unlimited Canada, which now operates the management area under agreement with the province of British Columbia. CVWMA area manager MarcAndre Beaucher, who is a wetland biologist, accepted the cheque. The CVWMA is recognized as a wetland of international importance as it plays a critical role in maintaining the global environment. CVWMA is home and year-round sanctuary to over 265 bird species, 50 mammal species, 30 fish, reptile and amphibian species, and thou-

I recently attended a first — a local environmental forum cohosted by the Town of Creston and Labatt’s Columbia Brewery, which was timed to recognize United Nations World Environment Day. Like many first time events, I don’t think most participants were really clear on how the whole thing would unfold, but I doubt that any left with regrets in attending. First, the fact that one of our largest private sector employers was the driving force behind the event was in itself a message of hope. Columbia Brewery is a critical part of the Creston Valley economy and it has been a great leader by example as it has adopted a sharp focus on environmental responsibility over the years. Brewery manager Murray Oswald’s report was an impressive one. Columbia Brewery monitors its activities in all aspects of production, measuring and setting goals, then taking the necessary steps to achieve those goals. Oswald gave credit to the employees, who are encouraged to identify opportunities for sustainability. It’s an example of a corporation understanding that top-down decision-making doesn’t work when buy-in is required from the entire workforce. Statistical results presented by Oswald were staggering and no doubt every business and organization in the Creston Valley could learn from the way the brewery has tackled issues like recycling, water usage and energy conservation. Each of the presenting groups, which also included the Town of Creston, Wynndel Box and Lumber, Interior Health, the College of the Rockies, the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition,

This time of year the greenhouses are starting to empty out. That leaves me with a little more time every morning to complete some odd jobs around the nursery. It’s time to have all the irrigation pipes laid out in the field. Time to catch up on the weed control. Do some extra pest monitoring around the farm. And so on. We haven’t had very much rainfall this year so I’d better put the irrigation pipe to good use. I potted up a couple of edible fig trees I’ve been growing for many years. A lot of folks are interested in growing these not-quite-hardy-enough fruit trees, too. I always move them into an unheated greenhouse for winter but burying the stems underground can give added winter protection if you haven’t a greenhouse available. Throughout the day people have questions to be answered concerning plant health care. There are a few leaf rollers out around now. These small green caterpillars roll the leaves of ornamental and fruit trees up while they stay protected inside the roll. They are easy to control while in the early feeding stage but once they stop eating the leaves and pupate, it’s

too late. We carry Btk (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstakias), a spray that will poison the caterpillars. It is a very specific “biological” pesticide.

It’s been a good season for the aphids. At least they are easy to control. You can use a hose and lots of water pressure to spray them off your plants, or for a more complete control, spray them with a soap and water solution. Do this on a cool overcast day because the sunrays may be magnified by the soapy water. Plant leaves can be burnt by the sun just like you and I. Maybe it’s the clear skies or just the elevation, but before moving to Creston I wouldn’t have believed the strength of the sun here. For instance it can fade the colour off a basketball in only a few months. The good part of this is that many plants have better leaf colour here. Blue juniper grows with a more intense blue colour. Variegated plants look better, too. Of course, talking pest control at this time of year I should mention the western cherry fruit fly. While it is still a little early to start spraying for this winged pest, it is time to have a plan. Some form of weekly control should be applied roughly the third or fourth week of June through a few days before harvest to your cherry trees. We have also seen a few cases of powdery mildew. This is a broad spectrum term we use to describe a whole host of fungal growth on plants typically causing a powdery white growth covering the new growth. Powdery mildew on a crimson king maple will not be the same mildew that you may find on a ninebark or an apple tree. You can control this disease on small trees and shrubs by spraying the white spores with a mix of one litre of water, a tablespoon of canola oil, a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drop of Safer soap. Spray till the solution is running off the plants.

Politicians should help protect land To the Editor: I was very pleased to see 200 Creston residents take part in the worldwide uprising against Monsanto’s piracy, taking biodiversity and genetic resources from farming communities, and other crimes. Thank you — it is high time that we stand up and make ecocide a crime against humanity alongside genocide. The last 20 years have seen very rapid erosion of seed diversity and seed sovereignty. The World Trade Organization (WTO) further accelerated the spread of genetically engineered seed, which can be patented and for which royalties can be collected. While the majority of Canadians want all genetically modified organisms to be labelled, our prime minister is supporting the likes of Monsanto to prevent labelling. Our MP David Wilks wrote in a May 30 letter, “Any person who holds a public office position, either elected or appointed, should not only withstand public scrutiny, but stand before the public to explain any shortcomings. If you can do neither, you should do the honourable thing and quit the position.” I fully agree with him and hope that Prime Minister Stephen Harper will do the honourable thing and quit his position. After all, the prime minister has again and again trampled on democracy and ignored the will of the people. Mr. Wilks is asking us to be proud, patriotic Canadians. A good start would be to protect our home and native land and our sacred Earth from destruction by greedy corporations. And to get rid of prime ministers and other politicians acting as their willing helpers. Henry Dahle Creston

God’s love and truth are needed To the Editor: Earlier this year, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that biblical speech opposing homosexual behavior is a hate crime (theaquilareport.com). The Bible reveals two things very clearly, in relation to the cross on which Jesus died. First, “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) The definition of sin cannot be changed. It’s intrinsically, scientifically, lethally opposed to how God designed and created the universe. If the definition could be changed, the cross would not have happened. Second, that God loves us more than His own life. (Revelation 1:5) Sinners of all kinds are deeply loved by their Creator. If that weren’t true, the cross would not have happened. Christians are never taught by the Bible to ridicule or hate any person. Some Christians may hate people of a certain group — but the Bible doesn’t teach them that. Because sin hurts and destroys us, God cannot give it His approval and support. His love for us won’t allow it.

He will never make sin innocent and harmless. But He has made a method of escaping it — and the spiritual and physical dying it causes. God’s love for His creatures generates His hatred for the sins that harm them. To the Editor: Orpheus, an all male choir (with a female director) from Vancouver, presented a concert on June 3 at Prince Charles Theatre. They are a remarkably talented group of harmonizers with the only music supplied by one of their own, on piano. What a treat is was to hear them sing for us! The theatre was well filled by many fortunate community members and Prince Charles Secondary School students. The audience was invited to sing the chorus of Hallelujah, and I must say the participation was great and blended well with the choir. It was an hour very well spent. Christian principles end greed To the Editor: (Re: “Senators should be accountable”, May 30 Advance, page 7) If my taxes pay the salary or expenses of any elected servant or employee, or if public money is spent for any project, then I, and every taxpayer, should have every right to see where taxes are going, whether at the local, provincial or federal level. An audit should be done for every level of government, from the Senate to the local authority, and the results be made available to the general public without any “spin doctoring” being done. Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks wrote, of senators, “Any person who holds any public office position … should not only withstand public scrutiny, but stand before the public to explain any shortcomings.” Alberta MP Brent Rathgeber wrote, of Government, “I have reluctantly come to the inescapable conclusion that the government’s lack of support for my transparency bill is tantamount to a lack of support for transparency and open government generally.” In 1896, Christian author Ellen White wrote, in Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing (page 68), “Everything that Christians do should be as transparent as the sunlight. The May 30 letter about senator accountability (“Senators should be accountable”, page 7) is a shining example of this. In it, MP David Wilks says he is “equaly upset over the entire set of events” regarding the senate scandal. Need you be reminded that your government appointed these people to these positions? So, who should be accountable? Its like giving a twoyear-old a box of fudgies then being shocked he ate the whole box and wiped his hands off on the furniture. You need to ask the Supreme Court if senate reform can be done? If they write the laws, what do we need you for? You’re the government — that’s what you get paid to do! I know that getting 50 per cent of the voters to agree on anything is difficult when only 38 per cent voted for your party. “It’s not likely to happen,” is like saying, “It’s too hard, so I don’t want to do it.” I had an employee that said that to me once. Guess what? I fired him. That’s not likely to happen in this riding, though. Our MP could be smoking crack with the mayor of Toronto behind the Parliament building and this riding would still vote Conservative. During the provincial election, I ran into one guy who said he wasn’t voting because there wasn’t a Conservative running in this riding. I was shocked he’d even consider that with Internet censorship, gagging the CBC, bank bailouts, hidden slush funds, the bogus economic action plan, document tampering, robocalls, veterans rights, bullying and protesters rights being vandalized by his idols. He told me, “Sometimes these things need to happen to get things done.” It doesn’t happen very often, but I was speechless. I can’t debate with intelligence like that. One woman told me she voted Conservative because she believes in the Bible. As if Stephen was the messiah or something. I asked her to show me the passage that says, “Thou shalt vote for Stephan Harper,” but she couldn’t. The one who is accountable for all this rubbish is you, the taxpayer. At the end of the day, it’s your money. If you won’t hold these clowns accountable for their actions, then you deserve what you get and it will continue to happen. They mock you at every instance. We all live with and cannot escape from uncertainties and difficulties such as illness, aging, death and our inability to fully control daily events. With a mindfulness practice we can determine what helps and what harms. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, take 10 minutes every day to do nothing but notice the connection between what you are thinking and how your are feeling physically and emotionally. Observe your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations and consider how they relate to one another. Then take this practice into your daily life. For example, notice your initial reaction when you are stuck in a lineup or in a difficult conversation. Millions if not billions of humans are wondering if America went mad. Remember, Monsanto gave this world DDT, Agent Orange and genetically modified garbage. The first two are self-evident as to what value it brought to anyone. The third one is best answered by suicides of Indian farmers who lost everything after using the high-promise low-return Monsanto genetically modified garbage. Had the U.S. politicos an iota of sound mind and an ounce of heart or soul, this nonsense would have never taken place. The U.S. politicians lost their moral compass.

The other notable example was the last B.C. election, in which we were presented with one of three unique choices: vote from the pool of soldout parties, vote for unelectable odd dudes or stay at home knowing our elections are, in fact, selections with a capital S. Why do I say that? Because the Liberals are greasing wheels of their corporate buddies and the NDP does the same for big unions, while the Greens were unelectable for one, and only one, reason: they are pushing a highly controversial homosexual agenda, thus chasing away prospective voters from all walks of life. Did not James Bovard warn that democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner? To add salt to the injury, shortly after the election, the court basically rubber-stamped that Chinese workers can replace Canadians in B.C. mines. For those with a memory span longer than few years, the Liberals shoved the HST down our throats — once again, shortly after the election. Both the Liberals and NDP are plunging our province into debt that will eventually destroy our children, if not us. This is just one of many examples showing that instead of natural resources and politicians bringing benefits to the majority of B.C. residents, we are selling our resources and our children’s future with politicians securing their temporary spot at the trough. Lost moral compass, anyone? The last example I want to touch on is our beloved senators’ expenses. Harper was swearing all the way, until he weaseled his way into a majority government, that he would not stuff the Senate with unelected and unelectable cronies. Not only did the opposite happen, it turns out his buddies are the worst of the worst at the trough — with Duffy racking up illegal expenses of $90,000 being the tip of the iceberg among Harper’s appointees. To make things worse, the prime minister’s chief of staff, Harper’s right hand, wrote a personal cheque to cover Duffy’s indiscretions to keep Duffy quiet for a while. Of course, Harper denied it, then was frustrated, then did not show up for a question period. We would learn nothing of this without whistle blowers, would we? I chose examples from politics because it is an area that touches all aspects of life and affects us and our descendants long after we are gone. If we do care, can we search our lives and surroundings for a moral compass, and if that’s what was lost, recover, restore, safeguard and start using it?
