COTR seeking farming program input BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
The College of the Rockies is seeking input on an agriculture program that will debut in February. An open house for the Columbia Basin Trust-funded Community Agriculture Learning Needs Assessment (CALNA) will run 4-5:30 p.m. June 17 at the Creston campus, allowing a chance to ask questions and offer suggestions. “The meeting will offer people of all ages the chance to share their perspectives on the kinds of agriculture/food security learning supports that would most benefit them,” said Laura Hannant, COTR facilitator of partnerships for community development. The 10-month program, funded with seed money from the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation, and Technology, will start in February 2014, and will be one of four in Canada.

The name derives from the Greek words skleros (hard) and derma (skin), and reflects the disfigurement experienced in scleroderma due to increased production and deposits of collagen in the skin. There is no known cure, and individuals with scleroderma face high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as substantial disability and impaired functioning. Research on finding a cure for scleroderma, as well as on ways to improve quality of life for people with scleroderma, is of tremendous importance. Until recently, little was being done to address these problems, and the Scleroderma Society of Canada and the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group partnership were formed to change that. Xeriscaping reduces West Creston fire need for both water protection a step closer and maintenance BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
West Creston appears to be inching closer to having a formal fire protection service. Area C director Larry Binks said on Monday that he has just received Regional District of Central Kootenay approval on the wording for a petition that, if successful, will tax residents at a rate of 69 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. Binks said he plans to go door-to-door to collect signatures. “I don’t see this is as a political issue,” he said. “I think the people of my area deserve fire protection and I’m doing every-
thing I can to make that happen.” Meanwhile, the West Creston Fire Protection Society, a volunteer group, continues to collect funds to build a fire hall. Negotiations are underway to acquire one of several building sites under consideration, Binks said. The area has been without a building since a storm two years ago destroyed the structure that housed a fire truck. On May 28, society president Jim McLeod and operations director Ed Teague accepted a $5,000 contribution from BC Hydro. “We recognize the importance of building a new facility
that will allow quick and effective access to safety equipment needed to respond to emergency urban wild land interface fires as efficiently as possible,” said Diane Tammen, BC Hydro community relations manager, as she handed over the cheque. A new building will incorporate energy efficient, cost effective fixtures including energy efficient lighting, a high efficiency heat pump system for heating and cooling, and high performance window installations. McLeod said the society is ready to begin construction as soon as a building site is acquired, possibly as early as this summer.
Art festival part of Wynndel Canada Day celebrations BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Queen Elizabeth has sent her regrets, but organizers are continuing full steam ahead with plans for a Canada Day weekend celebration in Wynndel. The O Canada Art Festival will actually run from June 29-July 6, but Canada Day weekend will be chock full of events for the family, with a focus on the arts. “We will also be shipping the Statue of Liberty necklace to New York on July 4,” organizer Sandy Kunze said. For two years, Kunze has been coordinating the project, with individuals crafting large clay beads, glazed and fired, which are now strung to create a giant necklace. “I thought it would be a nice touch to invite Queen Elizabeth to our community, so I sent off a letter of invitation a few months ago,” Kunze said. A letter of regret is now in Kunze’s possession, written by the Queen’s lady in waiting. The letter writer explains that the Queen will be unable to attend, but adds that she was particularly interested in some of the events, as well as the creation of the Statue of Liberty necklace. The invitation and response are now framed and will be hung in the art show. “We will be showcasing the works of two
prominent Canadian artists, local artists, artist demos, an artisan market and other activities such as a petting zoo for the children,” Kunze said. The art show, From Far and Wide, will feature presentations from two prominent Canadian artists. Yukon’s Sandra Grace Storey and Randall Finnerty of Montreal will be traveling to what Kunze likes to describe as “our quaint little community”. Both will be conducting workshops at the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre in Creston later in the week. Finnerty is a visual artist who has been working for a number of years with charcoal on paper, portraying a cast of animal and human characters that are often set in wilderness environments or on the periphery of human settlements. Storey makes clay objects that resemble animals or the human figure to evoke a single moment within the ongoing narrative of human existence. In conjunction with From Far and Wide, Kunze is inviting Idaho artists to submit works for a Without Borders art show. Among the many planned events are an opening reception, music concerts, demonstrations by local artists, a wine and art bus tour, carnival games and a petting zoo and a lion dance with Red Jade Martial Arts. The complete schedule of events can be found at www.ocanadaartfestival.com.

Let’s get one thing out of the way to start. It’s xeriscape, not zeroscape. The term for low-maintenance, low-water-demand landscaping is often mis-said, and understandably so, because zero sounds like the ideal amount of effort that landscaping should require. Xeros, however, is Greek for “dry” and the word “xeriscape” simply refers to a gardening form
that minimizes the use of water. Promoted as an alternative for grass lawns, xeriscaping makes full use of plants, often native to the area, that require little or no water that doesn’t fall from the sky. But the increasingly popular approach to landscaping also adds interest, inviting creativity that extends far beyond the use of a single type of grass, an endless battle against dandelions and weekly rounds with a lawnmower and weed-whacker. Xeriscaping From page 3 Landscape designers build in features that make the end result look far different than an artful arrangement of perennials and shrubs. With the addition of a variety of mulches or decorative rocks to cover space between plants, a mundane lawn can be transformed into a Japanese-style garden or even a Zen-like meditation space. In front of the College of the Rockies, on 16th Avenue South, lies what is perhaps Creston’s best-known xeriscape project, designed by staff and students at the college, with consultation by Beltane Nursery owner Evan Davies. Once the design was created, the next step was to move or supplement the existing soil to create what amount to miniature hills and valleys, creating the base for a look that would be interesting right from the start, but also become more appealing as the plants matured. Landscape fabric is a xeriscapist’s best friend. It reduces weed growth but allows for rainwater to soak through. It also allows for evaporation, important because few plants like to sit in saturated soil. Non-plant features are typically created first.
North residence. The death is not considered suspicious. •An Erickson Road resident reported his neighbor called him a “dickhead” while they were disputing a property line. •An Elm Street male was reported to be in breach of his curfew conditions. •In conducting a well-being check on Kootenay River Road, police determined the resident was in the hospital. June 9 •Extensive damage was reported as the result of a vehicle colliding with an elk the previous day on Highway 3. •A Hepher Road resident in Boswell complained that a neighbor had come onto his property and dismantled a dirt bike track. •Minor damage to a vehicle was reported after a collision with a moose on Highway 3. •A red Mustang was reported to be leaving skid marks on roads in Crawford Bay. •An elderly male who reportedly fell off his bike on Canyon Street was not located. •An intoxicated Nathan Beaudry was arrested on Cedar Street for breaching his court conditions. He was remanded in custody pending a hearing.
The college plan included a “dry river”, a riverlike formation created by the placement of large and small rocks laid to look much like a riverbed, one that would never have water flowing through. Crossing that “river”, of course, is a lovely pedestrian bridge, made entirely of wood. With the completion of those elements, plants were set by making slits in the landscape fabric. Varieties were selected for their propensity to send out deep roots to find water, for their visual appeal and because they were particularly suited to the local climate. With the planting complete, a generous layer of bark mulch was spread on top. The mulch provides an insulating layer to keep the ground surface temperature steadier, allows rainwater to filter through to the ground, and discourages weed growth. The weeds that do start are easy to pull as there is no soil in which the roots can anchor. The end result serves as a demonstration garden for local residents to see firsthand. And the project could prove contagious. A similar project is expected to soon be underway in front of the college’s neighbor to the south, Creston and District Public Library. Expect to see another example of how low-maintenance, environmentally responsible xeriscaping can create a great alternative to grass lawns.

I recently attended a first — a local environmental forum cohosted by the Town of Creston and Labatt’s Columbia Brewery, which was timed to recognize United Nations World Environment Day. Like many first time events, I don’t think most participants were really clear on how the whole thing would unfold, but I doubt that any left with regrets in attending. First, the fact that one of our largest private sector employers was the driving force behind the event was in itself a message of hope. Columbia Brewery is a critical part of the Creston Valley economy and it has been a great leader by example as it has adopted a sharp focus on environmental responsibility over the years. Brewery manager Murray Oswald’s report was an impressive one. Columbia Brewery monitors its activities in all aspects of production, measuring and setting goals, then taking the necessary steps to achieve those goals. Oswald gave credit to the employees, who are encouraged to identify opportunities for sustainability. It’s an example of a corporation understanding that top-down decision-making doesn’t work when buy-in is required from the entire workforce. Statistical results presented by Oswald were staggering and no doubt every business and organization in the Creston Valley could learn from the way the brewery has tackled issues like recycling, water usage and energy conservation. Each of the presenting groups, which also included the Town of Creston, Wynndel Box and Lumber, Interior Health, the College of the Rockies, the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition,
Fortis BC and the Creston and District Community Complex, had their own examples of how they are working to make ours a better, healthier environment. Photographs of the old beehive burner at Wynndel Box and Lumber
It’s easy to forget about how big a part health care can play in environmental sustainability. We too often simply think of patient care, but the many health facilities and employees in Interior health could simply be part of the problem. Instead, though, presenters at the forum went through a large number of programs now in place to make our health care system part of the solution, instead. Ditto for the Town of Creston, which has been diligent in working to Lorne Eckersley reduce its own carbon footprint as it provides services to taxpayers. Coincidentally, a test brought back memories of our early project is now underway to study years in Creston, when the the feasibility of offering a full-serCrestbrook sawmill was still operatvice composting program. This time of year the greenhouses are starting to empty out. That leaves me with a little more time every morning to complete some odd jobs around the nursery. It’s time to have all the irrigation pipes laid out in the field. Time to catch up on the weed control. Do some extra pest monitoring around the farm. And so on. We haven’t had very much rainfall this year so I’d better put the irrigation pipe to good use. I potted up a couple of edible fig trees I’ve been growing for many years. A lot of folks are interested in growing these not-quite-hardy-enough fruit trees, too. I always move them into an unheated greenhouse for winter but burying the stems underground can give added winter protection if you haven’t a greenhouse available. Throughout the day people have questions to be answered concerning plant health care. There are a few leaf rollers out around now. These small green caterpillars roll the leaves of ornamental and fruit trees up while they stay protected inside the roll. They are easy to control while in the early feeding stage but once they stop eating the leaves and pupate, it’s
too late. We carry Btk (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstakias), a spray that will poison the caterpillars. It is a very specific “biological” pesticide.

Pests can be controlled
It’s been a good season for the aphids. At least they are easy to control. You can use a hose and lots of water pressure to spray them off your plants, or for a more complete control, spray them with a soap and water solution. Do this on a cool overcast day because the sunrays may be magnified by the soapy water. Plant leaves can be burnt by the sun just like you and I. Maybe it’s the clear skies or just the elevation, but before moving to Creston I wouldn’t have believed the strength of the sun here. For instance it can fade the colour off a basketball in only a few months. The good part of this is that many plants have better leaf colour here. Blue juniper grows with a more intense blue colour. Variegated plants look better, too. Of course, talking pest control at this time of year I should mention the western cherry fruit fly. While it is still a little early to start spraying for this winged pest, it is time to have a plan. Some form of weekly control should be applied roughly the third or fourth week of June through a few days before harvest to your cherry trees. We have also seen a few cases of powdery mildew. This is a broad spectrum term we use to describe a whole host of fungal growth on plants typically causing a powdery white growth covering the new growth. Powdery mildew on a crimson king maple will not be the same mildew that you may find on a ninebark or an apple tree. You can control this disease on small trees and shrubs by spraying the white spores with a mix of one litre of water, a tablespoon of canola oil, a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drop of Safer soap. Spray till the solution is running off the plants.

Politicians should help protect land To the Editor: I was very pleased to see 200 Creston residents take part in the worldwide uprising against Monsanto’s piracy, taking biodiversity and genetic resources from farming communities, and other crimes. Thank you — it is high time that we stand up and make ecocide a crime against humanity alongside genocide. The last 20 years have seen very rapid erosion of seed diversity and seed sovereignty. The World Trade Organization (WTO) further accelerated the spread of genetically engineered seed, which can be patented and for which royalties can be collected. While the majority of Canadians want all genetically modified organisms to be labelled, our prime minister is supporting the likes of Monsanto to prevent labelling. Our MP David Wilks wrote in a May 30 letter, “Any person who holds a public office position, either elected or appointed, should not only withstand public scrutiny, but stand before the public to explain any shortcomings. If you can do neither, you should do the honourable thing and quit the position.” I fully agree with him and hope that Prime Minister Stephen Harper will do the honourable thing and quit his position. After all, the prime minister has again and again trampled on democracy and ignored the will of the people. Mr. Wilks is asking us to be proud, patriotic Canadians. A good start would be to protect our home and native land and our sacred Earth from destruction by greedy corporations. And to get rid of prime ministers and other politicians acting as their willing helpers. Henry Dahle Creston
God’s love and truth are needed To the Editor: Earlier this year, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that biblical speech opposing homosexual behavior is a hate crime (theaquilareport.com). The Bible reveals two things very clearly, in relation to the cross on which Jesus died. First, “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) The definition of sin cannot be changed. It’s intrinsically, scientifically, lethally opposed to how God designed and created the universe. If the definition could be changed, the cross would not have happened. Second, that God loves us more than His own life. (Revelation 1:5) Sinners of all kinds are deeply loved by their Creator. If that weren’t true, the cross would not have happened. Christians are never taught by the Bible to ridicule or hate any person. Some Christians may hate people of a certain group — but the Bible doesn’t teach them that. Because sin hurts and destroys us, God cannot give it His approval and support. His love for us won’t allow it.
opiNioN LiNe
He will never make sin innocent and harmless. But He has made a method of escaping it — and the spiritual and physical dying it causes. God’s love for His creatures generates His hatred for the sins that harm them. Despite our inclinations and legal rulings to the contrary, our human sinfulness needs to be addressed — not through increasing evil, such as hating and ridiculing people, but through the love and truth of God. Ken Lemky Creston
Satan; and whoever in any way departs from the straight line of truth is betraying himself into the power of the wicked one. ... We cannot speak the truth unless our minds are continually guided by Him who is truth.” If only we would all live the truth and practice no deception. All of us are sinners and capable of committing the worst of sins, but if Christian principles were lived out, then the deception and greed which is prevalent in society and many professions would be eliminated. Free concert by Orpheus Taxpayers responsible enjoyed for politics
To the Editor: Orpheus, an all male choir (with a female director) from Vancouver, presented a concert on June 3 at Prince Charles Theatre. They are a remarkably talented group of harmonizers with the only music supplied by one of their own, on piano. What a treat is was to hear them sing for us! The theatre was well filled by many fortunate community members and Prince Charles Secondary School students. The audience was invited to sing the chorus of Hallelujah, and I must say the participation was great and blended well with the choir. It was an hour very well spent. Oh, yes — another fantastic freebie! What a town! Sandy Buckmaster Creston
Christian principles end greed To the Editor: (Re: “Senators should be accountable”, May 30 Advance, page 7) If my taxes pay the salary or expenses of any elected servant or employee, or if public money is spent for any project, then I, and every taxpayer, should have every right to see where taxes are going, whether at the local, provincial or federal level. An audit should be done for every level of government, from the Senate to the local authority, and the results be made available to the general public without any “spin doctoring” being done. Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks wrote, of senators, “Any person who holds any public office position … should not only withstand public scrutiny, but stand before the public to explain any shortcomings.” Alberta MP Brent Rathgeber wrote, of Government, “I have reluctantly come to the inescapable conclusion that the government’s lack of support for my transparency bill is tantamount to a lack of support for transparency and open government generally.” In 1896, Christian author Ellen White wrote, in Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing (page 68), “Everything that Christians do should be as transparent as the sunlight. Truth is of God; deception, in every one of its myriad forms, is of
To the Editor: It just makes me sick to hear politicians whine about their inability to do the things that their constituants want done. The May 30 letter about senator accountability (“Senators should be accountable”, page 7) is a shining example of this. In it, MP David Wilks says he is “equaly upset over the entire set of events” regarding the senate scandal. Need you be reminded that your government appointed these people to these positions? So, who should be accountable? Its like giving a twoyear-old a box of fudgies then being shocked he ate the whole box and wiped his hands off on the furniture. You need to ask the Supreme Court if senate reform can be done? If they write the laws, what do we need you for? You’re the government — that’s what you get paid to do! I know that getting 50 per cent of the voters to agree on anything is difficult when only 38 per cent voted for your party. “It’s not likely to happen,” is like saying, “It’s too hard, so I don’t want to do it.” I had an employee that said that to me once. Guess what? I fired him. That’s not likely to happen in this riding, though. Our MP could be smoking crack with the mayor of Toronto behind the Parliament building and this riding would still vote Conservative. During the provincial election, I ran into one guy who said he wasn’t voting because there wasn’t a Conservative running in this riding. I was shocked he’d even consider that with Internet censorship, gagging the CBC, bank bailouts, hidden slush funds, the bogus economic action plan, document tampering, robocalls, veterans rights, bullying and protesters rights being vandalized by his idols. He told me, “Sometimes these things need to happen to get things done.” It doesn’t happen very often, but I was speechless. I can’t debate with intelligence like that. One woman told me she voted Conservative because she believes in the Bible. As if Stephen was the messiah or something. I asked her to show me the passage that says, “Thou shalt vote for Stephan Harper,” but she couldn’t. The one who is accountable for all this rubbish is you, the taxpayer. At the end of the day, it’s your money. If you won’t hold these clowns accountable for their actions, then you deserve what you get and it will continue to happen. They mock you at every instance. Be careful what you say, David. Try to remember what happened the last time you spoke out against the fascist elite that run this country. Tyson Soroke West Creston

Stress and pain part of human condition
This is the first of eight short essays that will map out a mindfulness approach to stress and pain. To be human is to know stress and pain. We all live with and cannot escape from uncertainties and difficulties such as illness, aging, death and our inability to fully control daily events. Modern times are laden with new and greater threats, such as nuclear wartime, terrorism,
erratic and violent weather patterns, and other environmental catastrophes. With the advent of high-speed communication we face an onslaught of news, usually bad news that can give us an unbalanced focus on trauma and gloom. No wonder our brains get overwhelmed by this pace of life. No wonder we are susceptible to frustration, worry, panic and even self-

while dropping suffering and fear. Even though it is impossible to eliminate stressors, we can engage them differently by mindfully examining what may be influencing our relationship to the challenges that life brings. With a mindfulness practice we can determine what helps and what harms. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, take 10 minutes every day to do nothing but notice the connection between what you are thinking and how your are feeling physically and emotionally. Observe your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations and consider how they relate to one another. Then take this practice into your daily life. For example, notice your initial reaction when you are stuck in a lineup or in a difficult conversation. Then notice how bringing mindfulness to the situation offers you an opportunity to respond differently. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Creston’s ZenWords Zen Centre. Having studied many topics throughout my life I came to an interesting yet simple conclusion: Most human failures on any scale are due to the loss of a moral compass. Look at the bill recently passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by into law by President Barack Obama giving Monsanto immunity from prosecution. All Monsanto needed to do was to

bribe, er, donate to U.S. politicians who inserted the immunity clause into an unrelated bill and, lo and behold, fraud on a massive scale was born and cemented. Millions if not billions of humans are wondering if America went mad. Remember, Monsanto gave this world DDT, Agent Orange and genetically modified garbage. The first two are self-evident as to what value it brought to anyone. The third one is best answered by suicides of Indian farmers who lost everything after using the high-promise low-return Monsanto genetically modified garbage. Had the U.S. politicos an iota of sound mind and an ounce of heart or soul, this nonsense would have never taken place. The U.S. politicians lost their moral compass.

The other notable example was the last B.C. election, in which we were presented with one of three unique choices: vote from the pool of soldout parties, vote for unelectable odd dudes or stay at home knowing our elections are, in fact, selections with a capital S. Why do I say that? Because the Liberals are greasing wheels of their corporate buddies and the NDP does the same for big unions, while the Greens were unelectable for one, and only one, reason: they are pushing a highly controversial homosexual agenda, thus chasing away prospective voters from all walks of life. Did not James Bovard warn that democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner? To add salt to the injury, shortly after the election, the court basically rubber-stamped that Chinese workers can replace Canadians in B.C. mines. For those with a memory span longer than few years, the Liberals shoved the HST down our throats — once again, shortly after the election. Both the Liberals and NDP are plunging our province into debt that will eventually destroy our children, if not us. This is just one of many examples showing that instead of natural resources and politicians bringing benefits to the majority of B.C. residents, we are selling our resources and our children’s future with politicians securing their temporary spot at the trough. Lost moral compass, anyone? The last example I want to touch on is our beloved senators’ expenses. Harper was swearing all the way, until he weaseled his way into a majority government, that he would not stuff the Senate with unelected and unelectable cronies. Not only did the opposite happen, it turns out his buddies are the worst of the worst at the trough — with Duffy racking up illegal expenses of $90,000 being the tip of the iceberg among Harper’s appointees. To make things worse, the prime minister’s chief of staff, Harper’s right hand, wrote a personal cheque to cover Duffy’s indiscretions to keep Duffy quiet for a while. Of course, Harper denied it, then was frustrated, then did not show up for a question period. We would learn nothing of this without whistle blowers, would we? I chose examples from politics because it is an area that touches all aspects of life and affects us and our descendants long after we are gone. If we do care, can we search our lives and surroundings for a moral compass, and if that’s what was lost, recover, restore, safeguard and start using it? Vladimir Certik believes that thinking outside the box and engaging fellow citizens may bring simple solutions to complex problems. The West Creston resident can be reached at 250-402-0055.

Brazilian exchange members at home in Canada BY GIOVANA LOPES
Our group left Brazil on May 19 full of expectations and energy for the month ahead — we would be in Canada and the U.S.A., two weeks in each country, as part of the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE). As members of the program, apart from being ambassadors for our country and district, the idea was to get in contact with our careers and professions. The group is very diverse — there is a meteorologist (our team leader), a dentist, a teacher, an IT specialist and myself, a journalist. We knew we would face plenty of vocational experiences and even though we had really high expectations, we wouldn’t have known it would turn out to be even more interesting. Our adventure started in Kimberley, where we were extremely warmly welcomed — first thought: So is it really OK to hug people and act like we’ve known each other for a long time, like we do in Brazil? Apparently, there is no problem with that, and there were hugs all around. Our next days were really busy — a tour at the St. Eugene mission and the Sullivan mine, hiking and getting to know some of the local Rotary Club projects. Of course, we were, since the beginning, astonished by the scenery — for us, it just doesn’t look natural to have a mountain range surrounding us everywhere — amazing! For the first few days, we were thinking we might have been dreaming, or trapped in a cult movie or even taking part in Woody Woodpecker cartoon (that is big in Brazil!). The next stop was Creston for only a few days (May 25-28), but again, we were surprised by people being interested in us

and the purpose of our trip. As a journalist, I keep asking many questions — why, since when, for how long? It looks like my brain has no break at all and keeps processing a huge amount of information, trying to establish connections and comparison to how things are (or should be) back in Brazil — our education, our government, our people. The feeling I get is that, once back, I would bring along with my bags all these ideas and reflections that we should consider — that would go

for our Rotary Clubs, personal and professional lives. We are not even halfway through the trip, yet, so we know we’ll keep getting surprised and amazed, and the feeling I get is that I could never be part of a trip like this if it wasn’t for the GSE. I was an exchange student to Australia in 1999 for a whole year and back then, at 16 years of age, I did not get to be as mind-blown as I am right now. I guess time and maturity have gotten me in a way this trip will for-
ever be a significant part of my life. So far, we have realized that, even though Brazil and Canada are different countries, we also have a big number of similarities that make us feel comfortable and adapted even thousands of kilometers far from home. If you would like to know more about our trip, visit www.ige4510.blogspot.com. br. It’s in Portuguese, so if the translator doesn’t do a nice job, there are plenty of photos that speak for themselves.

Awareness needed to combat elder abuse KOOTENAI COMMUNITY CENTRE SOCIETY
Creston’s seniors are valued members of society, convey a wealth of experience and wisdom in the community and deserve to live with dignity and respect. It is our collective responsibility to ensure they live safely and fully in a community that cares about them. Victims of elder abuse are parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends. Please
support the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and wear purple on June 15. Elder abuse is not limited by race, gender, culture and circumstance, and whether physical, emotional or financial, elder abuse takes an unacceptable toll on individuals and families. Seniors who experience abuse or neglect face a heightened risk of healthrelated complications, financial abuse can rob seniors of the security they have built over a lifetime. Tragically, many older
adults suffer in silence, burdened by fear, shame or impairments that prevent them from speaking out about abuse. Combatting abuse of older adults will help improve the quality of life for all seniors in our community and allow seniors to continue to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Creston. The following organizations are commended for their effort to address this important issue:
•Kootenai Community Centre Society (250-402-0068) •Community Care Nurses (250-4283600) •RCMP Victim Services (250-428-9313) •Doctors and all community health care staff (250-428-2286) •Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (250-428-5585) •Financial institutions staff •Creston and District Community Resource Centre (250-428-5547)

On June 13, 1996, the then Governor General of Canada declared June 21 to be National Aboriginal Day, a day for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples to share their various cultural expressions with the rest of Canada. Celebrated annually around the time of the summer solstice, National Aboriginal Day is celebrated by Indigenous peoples across what is often referred to as “Turtle Island.” In recent years, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) has marketed the day as “an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions to Canada.”
On May 14, Creston Valley Shrine Club No. 35 president Derick Todd, past-president Henry Schoof and hospital representative Les MacDougall were proud to present a $3,510.10 cheque to Creston Valley Hospital site manager Chris Ondrik. The Shriners donation will assist the hospital in purchasing care related items for pediatric and neonatal services. The presentation of the cheque was due in a large part to the fundraising efforts conducted by members of the Shrine Club. Over the past year-and-a-half, funds were mainly raised by selling popcorn, but donations were received at many local events, such as the annual Creston Valley Home and Garden Show, Creston Valley Blossom Festival parade, Dash-for-Trash, Canada Day celebrations and the Creston Valley Fall Fair, as well as through gaming fund contributions.
The club would also like to acknowledge the following benefactors: Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle and Area C director Larry Binks, Overwaitea Foods manager Char Stunder and Creston and District Community Complex concession vendor Calvin Germann. All of these gifts have contributed to making this donation possible and were greatly appreciated. The main aim of the Shrine Club is to help children with various physical ailments requiring treatment that is not a part of the normal coverage of the provincial medical plan. Many children in the Creston Valley have been recipients of such aid, whether they received no-charge treatments at one of the local Shrine hospitals in Spokane, Wash., or Portland, Ore., or free transportation to and from nearby childrens’ hospitals in Vancouver or Calgary. The child’s welfare is uppermost when considering requests and under no circumstance does the child need to be related to a Shriner to qualify for services.

For transportation purposes, the Shriners organization in B.C. has six Care Cruisers, which are buses that are fully equipped with the latest medical equipment. Each Care Cruiser is the equivalent of a mobile hospital room that transports the special needs child and their family from their home to and from any hospital facility that is treating them, at no cost to the family. The most recent addition to the fleet stopped in Creston last year. Many locals were able to see how special these vehicles are when carrying such precious cargo as a child in need. If you have or know of a child who may benefit from this medical aid, please contact Les MacDougall at 250-4287536 for more information. If you have an upcoming local event that would benefit from having the Shriners sell popcorn, please phone George Fraser at 250- 402-6734 or Derick Todd at 250-866-6882. Creston 4-H Club members learn at safety day BY ALEXANDRA HAYES
Recently, Creston Valley 4-H Club members were invited to attend a regional 4-H safety day at Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds. The event was hosted by the Wasa and District 4-H Club, and was facilitated by the Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA). First of all, it was a sobering fact for members to realize that there are more deaths and loss of limb accidents in agriculture than in firefighting, policing or any other line of work. The major causes of the accidents stem from the use of large machinery and the handling of large animals. The day began with an interactive PowerPoint presentation on the handling and moving of cattle, whether from the range or in and around the farm. Members were encouraged to throw away their watches when it came to moving their animals, and take note of the fact that slow and quiet would get them a lot further than whooping and hollering, or attempting to outmuscle or outwit. If problems arose, it was recommended to try and see what the animals might be seeing or listen to what they might hear — as they were Karen van der Merwe more likely to balk out of fear Creston 4-H members at the regional safety day. than out of stubbornness. in good repair, wearing suitable shoes and clothes when riding, making sure you can be seen and making sure that you are paying more attention to the road than you are to the music on your iPod. While the day was certainly packed full of information and captured FARSHA’s motto — “Safety through knowledge” — it was also broken up into some lighter sessions. 4-H members split up into teams and competed in an egg drop, for example, and in a relay game with a safety theme. There was also a demonstration with two working border collie dogs and their trainer. They moved and separated sheep in a herd. It was simply wonderful to see. And in between all that, there was an endless supply of snacks and delicious homemade food. It was a great day at Wycliffe, and a great opportunity for 4-H members to review safety on the farm and with their animals. I know that I will make a conscious effort to put on my helmet for every ride, to secure the roll bar on the tractor when I got out to harrow the arena and to take my time when I am handling my Jerseys and my horses. For when if comes to safety, it is best not to compromise!

Don Alder offering guitar clinic and concert SUBMITTED
Don Alder, a top endorsee for Yamaha guitars, will be offering a master class guitar clinic and concert at the Snoring Sasquatch on June 21. Alder plays acoustic fingerstyle guitar with a passion that has quickly earned him a reputation as Vancouver’s “best kept little secret”. He is a world-class fingerstyle guitarist with a wow factor that has led to multiple endorsement deals with major manufacturers and a collaboration with Greenfield guitars to produce a signature acoustic guitar, the Don Alder G4 model. His unique style of playing incorporates fingerpicking with simultaneous percussion on the soundboard to create a wall of sound. He is often referred to as sounding like a four-piece band. Lyrical and compelling, his original songs are notes of exploration — some passionate and haunting, some hard-driven, others light and teasing. In quiet pieces or pushing right to the edge, Alder’s phenomenal fingerstyle playing and rich voice captivate. In 1985, he put his music career on hold to assist lifelong friend Rick Hansen with his quest

to create awareness for the potential of people with disabilities and to generate funds for spinal cord research. The world tour inspired millions of people throughout the 34 countries visited and raised $26 million. Alder still works with Hansen in a vital role at the Rick Hansen Man in Motion Foundation, which has had an impact of over $200 million in the field of spinal cord injury. In the early 1990s, Alder was mostly playing guitar as a hobby and was heavily involved in wheelchair sports. The world tour developed his wheelchair tech skills, which he continued to hone post-tour. This evolved to the point where he was chosen to represent Canada as the equipment manager/ wheelchair tech for the Canadian Paralympic team in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000. During that time, Alder met Sam Sullivan and Dave Symington, both quadriplegics and founders of the Vancouver Adapted Music Society. Alder became the guitarist for the society’s performance band, Spinal Chord. They released a CD, Why Be Normal, which received national airplay, and the video, Mary. Alder’s clinic is $20 and runs 1-3 p.m., with registration at Kingfisher Used Books or Black Bear Books. Advance concert tickets are $12 at those locations, and $15 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. concert.

The United Nations has designated June 15 as
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
Wear purple on June 15 to support seniors living in dignity. Research has shown that elderly abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation is one of the biggest issues facing senior citizens around the world. World Health Organization data suggests that 4 to 6 per cent of elderly suffer from some form of abuse, a large percentage of which goes unreported. The purpose of WEAAD is to encourage communities to recognize the problem of elderly abuse, and for countries to create policies that foster respect for elders and provide them the tools to continue to be productive citizens.

Jordan Joseph De Young
It’s with great sadness the family of Jordan announces his sudden passing on June 6, 2013 in the city of his birth, Fort McMurray, AB at the age of 21. At an early age Jordan moved with his family to British Columbia. It was here that he discovered his passions for swimming, diving and snowboarding. The family returned to Fort McMurray in 2003. Jordan enrolled in the RAP program while attending Westwood Community High School and became a Journeyman Crane operator in 2011. He had a zest for travel and adventure and was actively planning an itinerary for his next trip. Jordan will be sorely missed and forever loved by his parents Paul and Eveline De Young, big brother John and little sister Lindsay De Young as well as numerous relatives and many friends. Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 pm, Friday, June 14, 2013 at the United Church of Canada, 10003 Gordon Avenue, Fort McMurray AB. Memorial Tributes may be made to Fort McMurray Victim Services, 105 Paquette Drive P.O Box 5712, Fort McMurray AB. We would like to express our extreme gratitude to all the good people whose kind words and actions, compassion and support made the unbearable survivable. Thank you all.
Mae Langlois (nee McGovern) passed away peacefully on June 3, 2013 in the Creston Valley at the age of 93 years. Mae was born to parents Jeanie and James McGovern on April 30, 1920 in Scotland. Mae married Jack Langlois in 1939 in Trail, BC and shortly after, in 1943, they made the Creston Valley their home. Mae was a member of the Square Dance Club and Bowling Club. She enjoyed camping, Àshing, gardening, cooking and baking (there was always homemade soup at grandma's house!) She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. In her later years, she really enjoyed the outings with the T.A.P.S. programs and playing cards with friends at Crest View Village. Mae was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1998; her parents Jeanie and James; sisters Peggy and Ninian and brother Jackie. She will be lovingly remembered by her two sons and two daughters, Jackie (Buzz), Wayne (Lynn), Larry (Diane) and Lonnie (Mike); several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Jean and Marlene; brother Tom and numerous friends. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held for friends and family at Crest View Care Village at a later date. Any friends wishing to make a memorial contribution in Mae’s name may do so to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC 200 – 1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V6H 3V2. The family of Mae Langlois would like to thank Dr. Weaver and the nursing staff who took exceptional care of our mother during her Ànal days at Creston Valley Hospital. Thank you!

Kristina Campbell, director and producer of Searching For Emily, during the shoot in Haida Gwaii.
Emily Carr documentary runs at Tivoli on Monday SUBMITTED
On June 17, Victoria artist and filmmaker Kristina Campbell will premiere her entertaining awardwinning documentary Searching for Emily at the Tivoli Theatre in Creston. This surprising romp through history follows the creative process of portrait artist Manon Elder as she attempts to redefine the image of iconic Canadian author and artist Emily Carr (1871-1945). Campbell’s verité camera shadows Elder as she muses, paints, ponders and embarks on a journey in search of the places that inspired and defined Carr, culminating with a remarkable trip to the mystical
islands of Haida Gwaii. This quirky, real and beautiful film also chronicle’s Elder’s growing collaboration and friendship with Royal BC Museum curator Kathryn Bridge, as they set out to develop the landmark exhibition that will help to reframe Carr’s legacy and life story. “Manon Elder’s determination to give Carr back her youth stimulated new research and an exhibition,” said Bridge. “Searching For Emily captures Manon’s personal journey as a light-hearted adventure, full of unexpected moments of discovery.” Campbell, who grew up in Creston (nee Knudsen), will be in attendance for the screening, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10
at the door. See the trailer at vimeo.com/36434970. For more about the artist, visit manonelder. com.

Obstetrics program, MORE OB, launched at CVH BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
A new program to improve maternity services at the Creston Valley Hospital was launched on June 4. The goal of MORE (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently) OB is, according to its website, moreob. com, to “sustain a culture of safety by developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviours, and practices that make safety the number one priority and everyone’s responsibility, all the time.” The three-year program funded by Interior Health will allow doctors and midwives to take part in online learning, drills skills and workshops that will provide instruction on the most up-to-date evidence-based practices for taking care of maternity patients and families. “It’s going to unify all the professionals in the Kootenays with
what we’re doing,” said Dr. Karen Persad. At CVH, the program, created by the patient safety division of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada in 2002, will benefit five doctors and two midwives, who will be able to learn from local specialists. “It’s not someone else coming in to teach,” said Persad. The local maternity care community is also pleased to welcome to Creston a new surgeon/anesthetist couple, Drs. Kleinhans and Oberleitner. This will allow for more consistent coverage for caesarean section and epidural availability, which has had some gaps over the last 18 months — and with about 100 births possible at CVH each year, their presence is vital. “It’s a fabulous asset to have,” said Persad. “We now have enough surgeons and anesthetists here that we can probably always provide coverage.”
