Burnaby RCMP and conservation officers are on alert after three bears were seen hanging around Burnaby Mountain secondary this week. The trio, a mother bear and two cubs, are believed to be the same ones seen last week digging through garbage bins in the Cariboo Hill area. In that case, a police officer sent them back into the nearby forest by sounding his siren. “They’re not as frightened as they were by the siren,” said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Dave Reid. That could be a problem. On Monday, the bears were seen near Burnaby Mountain high school, but as it was a professional day and school was out they weren’t considered a threat, Reid said. But on Tuesday, they were back, getting as close as the property line of the school where the principal kept students inside until the bears had moved on.

Injured eagle soars again in Central Park Mario Bartel

It was not a happy day for the crows roosted in the tall trees around the south pond at Burnaby’s Central Park on Tuesday. And they wanted to make sure everyone within earshot knew about their discontent. The release into the park of a bald eagle that had been nursed back to health after it had lost a fight with another eagle was greeted with screeches of derision and displeasure from the coal-black squatters skulking high in the branches. But the humans who’d cared for the female eagle since November couldn’t have been happier. Few thought they’d get to this day. Jaromey Ryon was amongst a group of women walking their dogs along a trail in the park one winter morning when one of them spotted the hulk of black and white feathers plastered to the ground, motionless. They made some phone calls, set up a protective perimeter to give the wounded bird some peace, and waited for help to arrive. When Shirley Tebbs, a worker with Burnaby’s parks and recreation department, happened upon the scene she thought the eagle was dead, its head gashed into a bloody pulp from the talons of its foe. “But when we went near it, it jumped,” recalled Tebbs. “It’s alive!” A team from the SPCA transported the

eagle to Wildlife Rescue on the south shore of Burnaby Lake where it was X-rayed and stabilized with fluids before being sent on to Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) in Delta for further care. “She was really in rough shape,” said OWL’s Martina Versteeg, who supervised the eagle’s medical treatment. The eagle was in shock, partially scalped and bleeding from a puncture wound in its skull. Versteeg said most birds would be unlikely to survive such injuries.

But days of intensive care, including a course of antibiotics and a protective skull cap over its wounds, brought the eagle back from the brink. That was followed by months of careful tending to allow skin to grow back over the injuries, and rehabilitation in a flight cage. “She had quite the spirit about her,” said Versteeg. Which is why she, other volunteers from OWL on hand for the bird’s release, and bystanders who knew its story, were

beaming as the kennel door swung open, rustled a couple of times and then the eagle swooped out low to the ground before rising high above the pond to the cacophony of crows. “This one is quite a big deal for us because we had seen how bad she was when she came to us,” said Versteeg. “I was quite surprised to be able to see how it turned out,” said Tebbs. “Beautiful,” said Ryon. “This is like, ‘wow.’”

Burnaby RCMP are investigating after a pickup truck was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. At about 4 a.m. several people called police to the 7400block of Woodbrook Place after area residents were awoken by a loud bang and looked out to see the vehicle on fire.

The fire was in an older model pickup with expired plates, said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Dave Reid. Two other vehicles nearby were also damaged although neither caught fire themselves. Burnaby firefighters put out the blaze and there were no

injuries. Reid said there were no witnesses to the incident leading up to the truck being on fire and there is no surveillance video available. “There doesn’t appear to be any forced entry to these vehicles at all.” Burnaby RCMP will follow up on the case to determine whether any accelerant was used. twitter.com/WandaChow

Rat issue due to people feeding birds: resident Calls on council to address issue Wanda Chow

Burnaby resident Craig Nelson has seen the problem up close—twice in recent weeks, he’s killed rats while out walking his dog. The Edmonds-area resident complained to city council two years ago about the rat problem in the city and was back again Monday to ask for more action. After Nelson spoke to council last time, he said, poison was put out and he was soon encountering numerous rat carcasses along his dog-walking route in South Burnaby. But while more signage was put up telling people not to feed birds and wildlife, it’s being ignored, he said. “In many cases I see people standing next to the sign feeding them.” On his daily walks to Central Park Nelson has determined that the worst areas for rat infestations is near Gilley Avenue and Beresford Street and along Dow Avenue.

He’s seen people feed the birds, and even a rabbit, and with birdseed, bread crumbs and other food scattered on the ground, it’s a virtual buffet for rats attracted to the area. Nelson even gave council leads on some of those responsible, including an address in the 5500-block of Beresford and another in the 6600-block of Dow. He said he’s spoken with someone in the provincial wildlife branch who informed him people feeding the animals are in contravention of the Wildlife Act. Prosecuting them is the only way to alleviate the problem, Nelson said. “I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t walk by a rat carcass.” Coun. Nick Volkow questioned whether it would be the province’s responsibility instead to enforce the Wildlife Act in this situation. Mayor Derek Corrigan noted that some of the areas Nelson is concerned about are not under the city’s jurisdiction, and are instead the responsibility of railway companies and

Long and short A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured while longboarding near his home in east Maple Ridge on Saturday. According to police, he was riding down a steep hill, lying on his stomach, and rammed headfirst into the side of a moving car. He was wearing a helmet. The boy is the fifth longboarder in Metro Vancouver in as many weeks to be seriously injured in such a collision. All this has neighbours and safety advocates calling for better traffic controls or new rules banning longboards on our streets. Last year the District of North Vancouver joined White Rock, West Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver in banning longboarders on some streets, because they go too fast down hills with, essentially, no brakes. Now North Van district may ban longboarding on all streets. Will that stop riders? Can such bylaws be effectively enforced? Will they reduce injuries, prevent deaths? To outlaw this increasingly popular recreational activity would be a knee-jerk reaction, as is blaming parents for the recent collisions. The latter can’t be standing on every street corner, hovering over their young. Kids need room to grow. Sometimes they make errors in judgement. By the way, the longboarders injured in West Vancouver were 21 and 23 years old. However, parents must teach their kids safety, just as they would for rollerblading, riding a bike or a standard skate board – stay to the right, obey traffic signs and signals. Show them where it is safe to ride,. We doubt any city is going to designate a hill solely for longboarders, stacked with hay bails at the base, anytime soon. In the meantime, let the latest incidents serve as a lesson in awareness. —Black Press

Think I’ve found my third calling After somewhat dubiously successful careers in both print journalism and the movie industry – neither of which explicitly required so much as a passing grade to break into – I’ve seen my future, and it’s as nepotistic as the other two combined. Politics. Not just any branch of politics, mind you. I don’t have the wherewithal or charisma to actually sit through an election, being judged by the likes of you. (No offence intended. Just trying to prepare the accepted attitude once I’m officially in office.) Nor do I want one of those plum partisan bureaucratic jobs that are handed out and then rewarded with gargantuan pay raises. Too often they are then taken away at the first whiff of scandal – albeit most with the offer of a nice, fat cheque to cushion the fall. No, I want to be a senator! Life-long employment until age 75, six-figure wages and all the perks and benefits you can have your staff jot down on a claim

My understanding is that, in theory, I’d have to find favour with the Queen in order to be appointed to the Senate. Good news is, I’m a fan. I even keep copies of her picture in my pocket, not to mention finding them in between the sofa cushions, when I’m running a little low. But in practice, I guess, it’s not so much the Queen’s call – or even her designate, the Governor General – so much as the prime minister’s. And this is where my prospects get a little shaky. Turns out, as a journalist, I’m often tasked with taking a step back and reporting and/ or analyzing news items with an attempt to see it through objective eyes. Pamela Wallin, who made earlier careers of asking political personalities the tough questions on TV. Of course, Duffy and Wallin went on to become Conservative appointees to the Senate. They must have done something right, at least in the eyes of the PM. And the rest of their political and journalistic careers, as they say, is history. My own record of objectivity, I think, is distinctive from theirs. Robocalls, travel expenses, internal party politics, Senate breaches… no, I don’t think the prime minister will come knocking at my door anytime soon. I think my third career has stalled before it got off the ground. Back to journalism, for now… But in case I need a fourth calling, I could make a career of my first after-high-school job. Conservation officers have been to the area and plan to monitor the bears for the next week, Reid said on Wednesday when, as of noon, there had not been any additional sightings. “Basically, if the population stops putting garbage out and things like that and they’ve got no food source down here, they’ll drift away and go back up the edge of the mountain where there is a viable food source for them,” he said. “But if [the bears] continue to hang around the area we’re going to end up with some sort of interaction between them and the people that is going to be less than satisfactory.” He said conservation officers have indicated the first option is to relocate the bears, to Indian Arm for instance, but “90 per cent of the time it doesn’t work and the bear comes back, this is their range, they know it.” If they do return, and they

have interactions or conflicts with people “they will have to be destroyed.” The conservation officers are familiar with the bear family and believe the two cubs are nearing the age when they would set off on their own, Reid said. People are being reminded to keep their garbage inside until pickup day, cover their barbecues, and keep any pet food indoors to avoid attracting the bears. “If we’re forced into a situation where the bear is there and kids are there, your options narrow down to zero almost right away.” Conservation officers are receiving more calls about bear sightings this month, and are blaming pleasant weather and amorous males for the increase. B.C. Conservation Officer Jack Trudgian said there are a number of bears out this season for a few reasons.

A long, cold winter which has suddenly turned warm means the male bears are getting cozy with sows. They are moving the young bears out of the way, which then often wander into residential neighbourhoods. In addition, bears at this time of year—hungry after hibernation—are looking for food. “We’re getting more bear calls in Surrey, Burnaby and Langley than we get on the North Shore, and the North Shore is usually the one that generates all the calls,” Trudgian said. Slippery conditions can not only make it more dangerous to push a mower, but also slow down the time it can take to tackle the chore. The mower blades can become clogged and coated with wet grass clippings, necessitating stopping and starting the task. Another thing to consider is lawn diseases spread more readily through wet clippings. Stick to mowing when the lawn is completely dry.

Festival celebrates Scandinavian midsummer It may be the official beginning of summer on the calendar, but in the northern climes of Scandinavia when the sun doesn’t dip below the horizon and the first harvest is in the barn, it’s considered the middle of the season. Time to celebrate! Which is just what the five nations that comprise Burnaby’s Scandinavian Centre will be doing June 22 and 23 at their 18th annual Midsummer Festival. The festival is a celebration of the season and all things Nordic, from music to food to arts and culture to history to quirky traditions like the raising of the midsummer pole, a sort of garland-wrapped maypole that is danced around after it’s tilted

into position. There’s even a chance to win your wife’s weight in beer on the Sunday by being the fastest to carry her around an obstacle course. This year’s featured country is Iceland, which will be highlighting its volcanic geography with a special craft area where kids can build their own volcano. And when they’re finished that, they can recharge with Icelandic kleiner cookies, a sweet biscuit that’s been twisted inside-out and deepfried. In fact all of the Scandinavian countries will be serving representations of their national cuisines; Danish open-face sandwiches, Swedish meatballs and toska cake, Finnish meatballs

Emily Carr works on exhibit at BAG For Swedish-born Sofia Stalner, being a curator is second nature. “Growing up my mother worked at the regional museum (in Sweden). I used to visit her there and help out with things like cataloguing umbrellas from the nineteenth century,” says Stalner. “Having had the experience of seeing a museum from behind the scenes, in combination with an interest in art, is what inspired my choice of profession I think.” Forest Interior, 1932, by Emily Carr. Now based in Vancouver for the past three years, Stalner is a Master of Arts student in the Critical Curatorial Studies program out at UBC. Her first curated art exhibition, Shifting Margins: Emily Carr and Irene Hoffar Reid will see the works of two great Canadian female artists exhibited at Burnaby Art Gallery until July 1. “Ever since I moved to Vancouver I’ve been fascinated by the status Emily Carr has in B.C. She really is a superstar here and yet I’d never heard of her before,” confesses Stalner. The community, developed by Qualico in partnership with Chow & Li, will provide shopping, dining and high-quality living, all in one spot. “We tried to make sure that there’s a floorplan for everyone,” says Diane Zarola, Sales and Marketing Manager for Qualico. Willoughby Town Centre will soon be an integral part of Langley.
