Township council approves Aldergrove ALR exemption By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove siblings Jae and Koen created a turkey out of vegetables and fruits to enter in this year’s 101st Aldergrove Fair. One of the categories in the Aldergrove Agricultural Association Fair Book this year is to create a turkey out of vegetables and fruits. Jae and Koen spent an afternoon creating this masterpiece out of pineapple, kale, apricot, celery, Chinese asparagus and red pepper. For details on the various entry categories and how to enter your creations see the website: www. aldergrovefairdays.com. The fair is billed as “Turkeyfest” this year, in recognition of the Throssell family’s contributions to the province’s turkey breeding program. This year’s Fair Days Chili Cook-off will also feature turkey chili recipes.

A well-known developer who is eyeing 44 acres of farmland in Aldergrove got much closer to finding out if it can develop its high-density housing concept there. At Monday’s afternoon meeting, Township council voted 5-4 to refer Genstar Development Company’s exclusion application to the Agricultural Land Commission. The land, located at 3250 - 264 Street, is in the ALR, but not in Metro Vancouver’s Green Zone. In February, Genstar held an open house showing a concept of townhouses and carriage houses. In 1996, the Township applied to the ALC to take this farmland out. The ALC rejected the application. In 2010, council didn’t support referring an application to the ALC for this property. The unused farmland has Bertrand Creek and its tributary running through it. The property is bordered by residential single family housing on two sides. It hasn’t been farmed for years, and has become a popular off-leash dog park, said Councillor Bob Long. Genstar held an open house in February to show a conceptual idea for the land, showing that it is interested in building high density housing, with eight to 15 units per acre. More people were against the concept than in favour, based on the feedback Genstar received from the 54 people who attended. One neighbour of the property, who also is a member of the Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society, told council on Monday that he could see single family homes going in but not townhouses and condos. He said higher-density development should go in the downtown core as per the Township’s Aldergrove revitalization project. “If we are going to ignore our plans to revitalize the downtown core, why make plans at all,” questioned Councillor Kim Richter. “We end up with another Tuscan Farm (which Township approved to take out of the ALC, to allow an 85lot subdivision) of high density stacked at one end,” she said. “If they do that, than they should have amenities within walking distance. This is nowhere near amenities.” Long, who lives in Aldergrove, was in favour of sending the application to the ALC and in

favour of seeing single family homes built. “There is no other area to develop. Aldergrove is land locked by the ALR. We can’t force people to develop in the downtown,” said Long about the Township’s Aldergrove downtown revitalization plan. “There is a definite market for single family on this land. We don’t have to approve townhouses and carriage houses.” He suggested that allowing farming, like putting cows on the land, as one resident suggested, would pollute the creek. Councillor Grant Ward said Aldergrove needs the population to boost this development would give to help the struggling downtown core. “We can’t keep saying no. By saying no we are asking Aldergrove to fall on the sword,” said Ward. Councillor David Davis asked the Township to leave farmland alone. “This is a cheap piece of land and that’s why it’s being looked at,” said Davis. Councillor Michelle Sparrow said it was “short sighted to think land is endless.” She was frustrated with how much farmland the Township is developing. Just last week, Township approved 67 compact residential lots to be built on the 153-acre Wall property at 224 Street and 72 Avenue. “There are plenty of opportunities to develop and redevelop in Aldergrove that doesn’t include farmland,” she said. “What about when food prices aren’t feasible and a tomato costs $5 or $10?” She said she has lost her confidence in the ALC to “make the right decision.” Mayor Jack Froese said Aldergrove needs growth if it is going to revitalize. “There is declining enrolment at the high school and small businesses are struggling. We need people,” said Froese. “I represent our current citizens and future citizens. And this town needs some growth.” The application has now been forwarded to the ALC. On average, it takes three to six months for the commission to respond. The minutes from Monday’s meeting, the 5-4 vote to refer it as well as the notes from the open house will all be included in the information the ALC receives.

Elks set to celebrate Museum seeking Dr. McBurney photos 90 years in Aldergrove Aldergrove Star

By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The Aldergrove Elks lodge is celebrating its 90th anniversary here this Saturday, June 22, with children’s and family activities and a dinner and dance. The day will begin food, vendors and games from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Elks promise “lots of fun for everyone” and all are welcome to join the activities. The activities will be held at the back of the former 1912 Aldergrove Elementary School site, 27032 Fraser Highway. Their dinner and dance gets underway at 6 p.m. inside the school’s gymnasium. It will feature a 1920s theme with an 18-piece big band, gambling, silent auction, and prizes for the best dressed couple, man and woman, along with a 50-50 draw. The cost is $25 and tickets are available from Jackie, call 604-6070160. The Aldergrove Elks Lodge #66

was instituted on June 30, 1923, when Provincial Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Brother Al Davis presided over 37 members who received the obligation. Brother Sam Campbell served as Aldergrove Elks’ first Exalted Ruler. The original meeting was held in the former Hamre Hall, and two years later the lodge had built its own hall, which opened on Nov. 3, 1925 at the corner of Fraser Highway and 273 Street. This hall was replaced with a modern concrete block building in the early 1970s. The Elks sold the property a few years ago and conducted meetings at the Aldergrove Legion hall. They currently rent the former Aldergrove Elementary School site for their purposes. Since its inception the Elks lodge has provided Christmas cheer hampers to the needy, as well as funding for Elks children’s charities and their Elks Children’s Camps such as Camp Elkgrove at Aldergrove Regional Park.

Langley Centennial Museum is hoping that the community can help them find photos of the late Dr. Albert McBurney in time for their upcoming exhibit, From Bedpans to Bandages: The History of Medicine in Langley. “Sometimes research for upcoming exhibits allows us to see where we have some holes in our collection, and allows us to involve the community in our hunt,” said museum curator Kobi Christian. “This photo seems to be the only one around, but there might be more out there.” Dr. McBurney was Langley’s second doctor. Born in Quebec in 1884, he earned his medi-

in Fort Langley in 1914, where Dr. McBurney took over Dr. Marr’s practice while Marr served overseas. After Marr’s return, the McBurneys moved to Langley Prairie in 1919 and practiced there. McBurney was known as a very kind and caring doctor in a growing community where times were often tough; he was known for taking care of those that were unable to pay, and making house calls to help the sick and injured in need at all times and in all weather before Langley had a hospital. Dr. McBurney was involved in the Masonic Lodge, the Aldergrove Elks Lodge, the Royal Canadian Legion, and

Langley Prairie’s May Day event. He was the creator of the Langley Amateur Athletic Association and president of the Langley Tennis Club. He also served as Langley’s Municipal Medical Health Officer and Coroner until he retired in 1950. He died the next year, a few days after a serious stroke. It’s because of his hard work and dedication to the community that the museum thinks there must be more photos of him. Do you have any photos of Dr. McBurney or his family? To share with the museum, please call museum curator Kobi Christian at 604-5323536 or email her at kchristian@tol.ca

Double shooting in northeast Langley Aldergrove Star

20363 - 65th Avenue, Langley, BC langleyseniorsvillage.com

Two men in their 20s were shot near the Tall Timbers area early Saturday morning. According to the Langley RCMP, just before 5 a.m., two men drove to an area near 232 Street and 56 Avenue. The pair met up with an unknown man who produced a firearm.

A struggle ensued and two shots were fired into the vehicle, said police. Both victims were hit by bullets. The driver managed to take both of them to Langley Memorial Hospital. They have been treated for their injuries. Langley RCMP say the incident appears to a targeted, drug-related incident. Both will

be OK and are co-operating with police. Police continue to look for the shooter. Dogs were called out to search for the shooter, but the search didn’t turn up anything. Over the weekend, Sgt. Ravi Pawar said that this was related to low-level drug culture and the public isn’t in any danger.

Small business in crunch

Founded in 1957

Editor: A visit to Stoelting’s Deli on Fraser Highyway left me stunned with the news they were closing shop as of Saturday, June 15. This is a shop where I have bought deli products for the 22 years we have lived in Aldergrove. A chat with the young lady who works there advised their business had dropped by 30 per cent since the Walmart at Highgate on Mt. Lehman Road opened. She advised the recent closure of the Oh So Good Deli on 272 Street and The Source in the Safeway Mall had been attributed to the same problem. Is this the beginning of the hollowing out of the local economy as Walmart vacuums the cash out of the community? How many other local business entities are feeling the effects of the arrival of Walmart only to have dollars sent to Bentonville versus being recirculated locally? I would be most curious to know. VICTORIA – After 34 NDP MLAs were sworn in to continue a stretch of opposition that will reach at least 16 years, leader Adrian Dix took a few questions about his future. The party’s provincial council will meet June 21 to set the terms of reference for a review of the party’s dismal election performance, Dix told reporters. He repeated that his performance won’t be spared, and ticked off some conventional wisdom about the NDP campaign. Dix mentioned the alleged lack of “negative” ads, the local campaigns (read candidates), the decreasing reliability of polls and, when pressed, his surprise decision to come out against the proposed twinning of the TransMountain oil pipeline. Like last week’s hysteria over a tiny leak in that pipeline, these are great sound bites for the short attention spans of the modern media. But they don’t explain much. This all-powerful NDP provincial council is a case in point. A glimpse into its inner workings was provided by a summary of an NDP policy development workshop called “Imagine Our Future” that was leaked by the B.C. Liberals in the final days of the campaign. The workshop took place in November 2010, coincidentally at the same provincial council meeting where the revolt against former leader Carole James tumbled into the open. While 13 caucus mem-

What ails the NDP? Plenty

bers were knifing their leader for reasons they still can’t or won’t articulate in public – a glaring problem in itself – the backroom policy brainstorm revealed a deeper malaise. Among the “dream tree” notions put forward in the workshop was “free” postsecondary tuition and public transit, along with raising wages and lowering fees for daycare. This isn’t a dream tree, it’s a money tree. Remember, this is the NDP’s ruling body, not a high school “social justice” class or an Occupy Vancouver squat. Showing a glimmer of adult supervision, the workshop table on “equitable tax policy” even identified the problem. Its first recommendation: “Increase our economic and financial literacy to gain credibility.” The “public ownership” table really got radical. Scrap public-private partnerships, the basis of most government construction today. “Nationalize” independent power projects, in the Venezuelan style of state seizure of private assets. And perhaps most incredibly, tear up the trade agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. that harmonizes transport truck regulations and so forth. In the real world, the four western premiers met this week in Winnipeg. And the three-province project now called “New West Partnership” will continue to dismantle archaic inter-pro-

vincial barriers. Why would the NDP be secretly against that? Because it’s also a “labour mobility” agreement. This harkens back to a supposed golden age in Canada, when two corporate titans shared the beer business, producing identical bland lager from identical factories in identical stubby bottles. Interprovincial trade in these stubbies was strictly forbidden, requiring each province to have a big unionized brewery to make uniformly bad beer for the proletariat. This is the power of a monopoly union. And because of it, this was how governments tried to “create jobs.” It’s a bygone era to which many core NDP supporters stubbornly cling. This explains the party’s revival of a “job protection commissioner” for forestry. Which brings us to the proverbial root cause of the B.C. NDP’s woes. Its largest financial donor is the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union, which donated $1.4 million to the party in the past eight years, nosing out the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Hospital Employees’ Union. Former HEU and BCGEU presidents now sit in the NDP caucus, critics for health and “green” jobs respectively. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Editor: I agree that Enbridge’s public relations regarding the Northern Gateway Project has been an fiasco in the grand style. Can you say “foot in mouth?” The Kinder Morgan proposal appears to be thought out, yet as one who has worked in the oil and gas project industry, the companies need to get information to the public in a manner that can be understood. This is sadly lacking. The current manufacture of line pipe has absolutely no relationship to the pipe of the 1950s and 1960s. API 5L requirements have been upgraded to reflect the concerns of the industry and the public. These specifications are in constant review. There is a project in Alberta that rejected the first group of pipe because one of the chemical elements was missing. The pipe met all other requirements, yet it was deemed not suitable for the application the end user wanted it for. There is a Canadian firm of note that took the Caspian Sea pipeline calamity as an opportunity to take the technology, improve it and put their company on the line with a guaranty to any user. These upgrades are not done without considering the long-term implications to the public. Canada’s major pipeline contractors have led the industry in safety and environmental procedures. Projects in the recent past that have been problematic have had little or no involvement with Canadian firms, the Caspian problems notwithstanding. Not to appear too cynical, but I often question the motives of the naysayers. These are people who travel utilizing modern transportation vehicles and equipment. They decry pipelines and oil, but for the most part the negativity is based on “what if.” Who are these organizations that decry the dangers without any hard information and facts, just supposition? In any other situation these groups would be ignored as loonies, baying into the night. When they come up with some hard facts which address the situation, I will listen. If one wanted to take the time to research the supposed problems, an in-depth search may turn up a common denominator. I’m for a prosperous, forward-thinking British Columbia. Terry Brenan, Aldergrove

Hard to be green today

Editor: I am a science teacher and I am always looking for science endeavors for my kids so recently we decided the weather was pleasant enough for a trip to the Greater Vancouver Zoo. We had researched and talked about the various animals and their feeding habits, adaptations and natural habitats before we proceeded on our journey. As I was exploring the GV Zoo’s website, I found a spring coupon for $5 off the admission price for one child and I thought that was a smart marketing strategy to help sales. I also read their information in regards to recycling and environmental conservation efforts and I thought this is an organization that I would like to support. So I took four kids to the zoo but much to my disappointment, my coupon was not honoured as I failed to make a printed copy. The coupon was displayed on my smartphone which in my opinion is an act of being environmentally friendly to help reduce the use of paper. For me, it is not the issue of saving $5, but simply the principle involved. How can you promote eco-friendly projects on your website yet refuse to honour them? M. Rai, Abbotsford

Butorac appeals convictions By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove serial killer Davey Butorac is appealing his conviction of killing two women. Saying that Butorac poses “a real danger to the safety of the community,” a B.C. Supreme Court judge sentenced him to life in prison with no chance of parole for 23 years in February 2011. Fire halls open doors for ‘family nights’ Aldergrove Star

A chance for children to visit a fire hall, meet their local firefighters, and even sit in a fire truck will be offered this month when the Township of Langley Fire Department holds its Family Nights at the Fire Halls. struggled with drug addiction. His appeal was heard Wednesday in the B.C. Court of Appeal. Butorac is still facing a trial on a third murder charge. He is accused of the murder of Margaret Redford, 47, of Aldergrove. Her body was found in Bertrand Creek in Aldergrove on May 20, 2006. At the time, Butorac was living with his father in a townhouse complex a short distance away. Butorac doesn’t have a criminal past. His parents described him as loving, in their letters to the court. There was nothing in Butorac’s background, no abuse or drug issues that might explain the degree of rage and violence he displayed in killing the two women, said Crown at sentencing. The Crown’s case was based on DNA blood evidence found in his car and on his shoe matching his victims. His trial for Redford’s murder will take place in 2014. No date has been set.

Teen takes backyard coops campaign to council By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

A Brookswood teen brought her campaign to allow Vancouver-style urban chicken coops in Langley Township backyards to council June 10. “I’m here about the chickens,” 13-year-old Emma Giesbrecht told a Township staffer when she arrived before the start of the afternoon council meeting. Giesbrecht came prepared with a written speech, computer slideshow and freshly-printed full-colour pamphlet. She has also set up a Facebook page, “Chickens for Langley, BC” that calls for allowing backyard chicken coops in residential areas like the cities of Vancouver, Seattle and New York. Giesbrecht delivered her pitch at a brisk pace, arguing that allowing a maximum of six chickens per residential backyard was “totally reasonable.” Giesbrecht and the Otter Flying Feathers 4H Club want a permit-based process that would allow 4-H members

who don’t live on farms to raise chickens and rabbits at their homes. Council made no decision on the suggestion, but Giesbrecht won praise for what mayor Jack Froese called “probably the best presentation we’ve had [in some time].” The proposal was opposed by Susanne and Scott Robb, who live near the Giesbrecht family. Susanne Robb said they were forced to file a complaint with Township bylaw enforcement officers after the number of chickens in the Giesbrecht’s back yard attracted rats. She said their neighbours started with four chickens, but the number grew to as many as 22. “If you want to raise chickens … you should live on an acreage or a hobby farm,” Robb said. The City of Vancouver approved urban chicken coops in residential backyards in 2010. The bylaw limits the number of birds in a backyard to four hens, no roosters, four months or older. About 100 Vancouver households have obtained permits to raise chickens.

Mayor lambastes incineration plans By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star

A presentation Monday afternoon, June 10, on Metro Vancouver’s trash management plan ended with Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman lambasting Metro for its “disrespect” of local concerns. “Every friendship, every neighbour has disputes … but we don’t feel as if we have had meaningful discussion with you,” Banman told Metro chair Greg Moore during his presentation to city council. Moore and Paul Henderson, general manager of Metro solid waste services, presented their organization’s plan to keep waste from being hauled to the Fraser Valley. Metro wants to license garbage haulers and ensure they only take trash to Metroapproved facilities. Currently, some waste from the region is flowing east to Abbotsford, where tipping fees at private transfer stations and First Nations landfills are cheaper – as low as $70 per tonne, com-

pared to Metro’s current rate of $107. The waste from these sites is then shipped by rail to a U.S. landfill run by Rabanco, near the Washington-Oregon border. Moore said this movement of garbage out of Metro results in these haulers not contributing to the cost of the region’s waste management system and creates an uneven playing field in the industry. Additionally, the haulers avoid disposal bans and prohibitions, reducing the incentive to recycle, he said. Moore said the fear, if Metro does not clamp down on this issue, is that more haulers will use outside facilities, the region will lose millions of dollars in tipping fees to support its waste management system, and its goal of diverting 70 per cent of waste from the landfill by 2015 will not be met. But Coun. Patricia Ross said this plan is leading closer to the concept of a second waste-toenergy incinerator being built, in addition to the one already in place in Burnaby.

Abbotsford mayor and councillor say incineration of garbage is “not the right way to go.” Metro directors have said they need 370,000 tones of garbage per year to support a new waste-to-energy (WTE) plant. Controlling where Metro haulers can take their garbage ensures the incineration quota is met, opponents argue. The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) — of which Abbotsford is a part – have expressed concern about the impact that pollution from a

Lower Mainland-based incinerator could have on the sensitive Fraser Valley air shed. FVRD does not have a seat on the expert panel overseeing WTE plans. Ross, who is vice-chair of the FVRD, and Banman referenced this issue during Metro’s council presentation on Monday, saying FVRD has been ignored in the matter. “We’re deemed as being the fly in the ointment,” Banman said. “I think we have a lot to teach you, but I don’t think you want to hear us because it doesn’t fit in (with Metro Vancouver’s plans).” Ross said incineration is not the right route to go. “It’s just frustrating to me that you’re kind of missing the point ... You couldn’t have possibly chosen a worse place in the world to locate this,” she told Moore. A proposed strategy for Metro’s waste flow management is scheduled to be submitted to the board for approval in early July.

Township urged to eradicate Knotweed Plant classified as invasive species By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

A warning about the spread of knotweed in Langley Township has prompted council to order an investigation. The warning was issued by Joe Cindrich, who said he has been fighting a frustrating battle near his Langley acreage with the hard-to-kill plant that can punch holes in concrete and pavement. “If it is not eradicated, it will spread and it will be costly,” he said. Cindrich, who brought some knotweed clippings with him to the Monday afternoon ( June 10) council meeting, told council he keeps ripping the plant out and it keeps coming back. “It looks like bamboo, except you can’t kill it [easily].” Because the plant has a large underground network of roots, it does not appear possible to dig enough of it up to prevent it from growing back, he said. “It’s horrible,” Cindrich said. The Wikipedia entry for Knotweed notes the

plant is listed by the World Conservation Union as one of the “100 worst invasive species.” Cindrich said as far as he can determine from his own research, the only proven method of killing knotweed is to inject it with some form of herbicide. The fast-growing plant was imported to Canada from Asia and sold by local Langley nurseries for landscaping, Cindrich said, suggesting the Township could be legally liable for property damage. “The municipality allowed it to be sold.” he said. “I will be seeking legal advice.” Later in the meeting, council voted unanimously to have Township staff investigate and bring a report back to council. Councillor Bob Long, who sits on the Metro Vancouver Environment and Parks Committee, said the regional district has programs to fight invasive plant species and might be in a position to assist with knotweed eradication.

here are many stories of people who need help that are never brought to the forefront of daily life for the rest of us. There are kids who are born into physical or mental difficulties. There are elders who fall into hard times due to medical issues and insufficient family to support them. There are people who need assistance to get through difficult medical issues, and there are people who are just in difficult financial times who could use a hand up or assistance for their children to allow them to have a better life.

There are also many support mechanisms that are offered by good hearted people who want to give back to their community and to be supportive of people in need. Some of these mechanisms are well funded through government subsidies and national campaigns and such while some of them are done on a shoe string budget with only what they can scrape together to help. Some have vast armies of volunteers and some are run by one or two dedicated individuals. All of these groups need help! Many of us have a difficulty finding time to help in some of those ways as our lives are full just bringing up family, paying the mortgage and making ends meet. Sometimes

we just don’t have the time to help like that. What the Langley Cruise-In does is raise money in the community to assist in funding some of these lesser funded charities. This is your opportunity to join in and help within your community. You can go online to www.langleycruise-in.com and make a contribution. You can make a single contribution or you can make an ongoing contribution. Either way, this money goes directly to local charities. The Cruise-In committee does not retain any money, it does not pay any salaries, and it does not waste money on extravagances with monies raised. If you would like to make a more direct and personal contribution, you can also come to the Cruise-In on September 7th and make a donation to one of our donation points with cash. Come down to the show and help us make Langley a better place. Eric Taylor, President, Langley GoodTimes Cruise –In Society / 2013 langley@langleycruise-in.com

Lacrosse Thunder golden once again Aldergrove Star

Another tournament, another title for the Langley B2 Thunder lacrosse team. For the second time in as many weekends, the local bantam lacrosse team was golden. But while last time they had to travel to the Okanagan to col-

lect their gold, this time, the Thunder did so in the friendly confines of within Langley at the Dennis Hickey Memorial Lacrosse Tournament. The tournament was held at the Langley Events Centre, the George Preston Recreation and the Aldergrove Arena.

Langley defeated Port Coquitlam 10-3 in the gold medal game on Sunday, with Aydan Johnson and Tyler Starinieri both registering hat tricks in the final. Starinieri earned game MVP honours. The win capped off a perfect 5-0 weekend for the Thunder

as they went 33-0 in the round robin and then defeated the Langley B1 Thunder team in the 5-4 in overtime in the semifinals with captain Kyle Olsen scoring the decisive goal. The Langley B1 team did bounce back to take the bronze medal. (See photo, page 12.)

public notice Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches The Township of Langley uses three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mower for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes or an assigned area to follow. If the equipment is pulled away to do a specific request, it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches. If you have a request for mowing or brushwhacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible. The Township, along with Provincial and Federal agencies, have classified open channel water systems into three categories: Class A ditches are fish bearing and Class B ditches are fish habitat. Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed. Class C ditches are deemed to have no fish or fish habitat issues whatsoever and only require notification for work to take place. How or when a ditch is cleaned depends on its classification. Thank you for your understanding as we operate under these requirements. Engineering Division 604.532.7300

WestJet celebrates 16 years at YXX Aldergrove Star

It has been 16 years since WestJet took their inaugural flight out of Abbotsford International Airport. Gregg Saretsky, President and CEO of WestJet came to Abbotsford on Thursday, May 23 to speak with Abbotsford Airport Authority members and celebrate the anniversary. WestJet began flight service out of Abbotsford International Airport back in 1997 with only 11 flights a week.

Now, WestJet offers seven flights daily to multiple locations, connecting mainly in Edmonton or Calgary. “WestJet is great partner of the Abbotsford International Airport,” says Airport Authority chair Dave Holmberg. “We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with the WestJet team to capitalize on the anticipated growth the Fraser Valley will experience now and certainly through the future 25, 50 and 100 years.”

Try our Slow-Roasted Pork Back Ribs. More meat. More sauce. More reason to holler HOO-WEEE!

With drums echoing through the fort, salmon baking over a fire and lively Métis dance performances, Fort Langley National Historic Site will be a festive and informative place to experience Aboriginal Day on Saturday, June 22. Celebrate Aboriginal culture with colourful jigging performances by the Métis dancers at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. At noon, the Kwantlen First Nation will perform a welcome song. Hear storytelling and taste salmon prepared over the fire at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Ties with the Kwantlen stretch back to Fort Langley’s operation between 1827 and the 1880s, when the Kwantlen were the key trading partners at the Hudson’s Bay Company post. Before Fort Langley was built, this region of British Columbia was home to thousands of First Nations people, and no other pioneer settlements. Families will love the “Salmon Run” activity as well as Stó:lô Strength Games throughout the day. These activities bring to life some of the activities of the Aboriginal women and children who lived at Fort Langley during its operation as a Hudson’s Bay Company post between 1827 and 1886. Regular admission fees apply ($7.80 for adults, $19.60 for families); and free for those with a valid annual pass.
