Along with Alec Hammond (not pictured), the students each played a movement of the Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A Major (K. 414) and were accompanied by Symphony of the Kootenays members Wendy Herbison and Vic Neufeld (violins, Nelson), Penny Long (viola, Cranbrook) and Creston’s Sophia Smith (cello).
LKB chief cycling for diabetes awareness BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
TODAY'S WEATHER
Members of his family and friends have suffered and died from the complications of diabetes and Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie wants to help put a stop to the suffering. On Friday morning, Louie will climb on a bike in Bonners Ferry and start out his ride home by crossing the bridge over the Kootenay River and making the long uphill climb toward Three Mile.
He won’t be raising money, just awareness. “This ride was inspired as tribute to my mentor, Chief Raymond Abraham of the Kootenai Tribe in Bonners Ferry,” Louie said on Friday. Abraham, a hereditary chief, died five years ago from diabetes complications. “It was a huge loss for our nation,” he said. “For me, personally, he took me under his wing. I know now that he was mentoring a future leader.” Louie witnesses the effects of diabetes

His wife, Angie, is one of many Lower Kootenay Band members to suffer from the disease. “It requires a huge lifestyle change,” he said. “A more active life and better diet, for instance.” In the 1970s, Louie said, Abraham declared a peaceful war on the United States in an effort to bring attention to the appalling conditions many First Nations people lived, and continue to live, in. “It will be very meaningful for me when I ride across the Bonners Ferry

On his ride, Louie will be joined by two others from Lower Kootenay, and he said the support from the Creston business community has been heartening. See JASON, page 5

reston’s Paul Dawkins (right) won the people’s choice award at the Cranbrook and District Arts Council’s VisArts 2013 adjudicated exhibition and sale. The piece, The Woodman Artist, a concrete sculpture, captured the title and a $300 prize at the exhibition, which ran from May 7-June 1. Dawkins, who spent part of last summer creating a sand sculpture in front of the Ramada Creston Hotel, has won international awards for concrete landscape rocks, but this is the first time he’s won an award in a competition comparing 2D and 3D objects. Concrete is the major part of Dawkins’ Greenway Creations products, which include furniture. He is currently enrolled in an 85-week course through Creston’s Community Futures self-employment program, developing concrete, wood and straw bale buildings, and self-sustaining off-the-grid energy systems and venue. He will also be teaching concrete sculpting through the College of the Rockies this month. Dawkins has enjoyed an artistic lifestyle for 40 years, and has lived in Creston for nearly two, which he credits with helping him to grow spiritually,

Korea was no match for the larger Canadians in front of their home crowd fans. Although Korea looked sharper off the start, with their middle blockers attacking well, Canada responded with another straight-set win. Just over 2,300 fans were on hand to cheer the Canadians. “Our goal is to be number one in our pool and to do that we need to have weekends where we get two wins in a row,” said Creston’s Gord Perrin. “It’s really tight and it is huge for us to get these wins.” Perrin was Canada’s top scorer, with 16 points, followed by right side Dallas Soonias of Red Deer, Alta., with 15. Canada heads to Finland (June 28-30) and Japan (July 5-7) to continue its campaign to finish at the top of pool C and advance in the tournament.

On Saturday, Gary Snow, Rick Potyok and Adam Koenig will play with Erickson, and Cameron Molloy from Harrisburg, Penn., will join them on Sunday. “Cam and I have not seen one another for more than 35 years so this should be a fun night,” said Erickson. Over the years, Erickson has played saxophone and bass in about 250 recording sessions for other artists, ranging from R&B to country — and even some reggae in Jamaica. He got his start as a preteen — “My brother took me to see Ray Charles about age 12 and I have never been the same since” — and toured across Canada and the U.S. before coming to Creston two years ago, forming the Hollyhocks with Warren and Kalen Huscroft. Nelson pilot killed in East Shore crash BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor Anthony Arnold (Tony) Quibell, 53, of Nelson was killed in a plane crash northwest of Crawford Bay on June 12. The twin engine Cessna 337 was on its way from Nelson to Saskatchewan when it went down around 2 p.m. “We have information from a spot tracker that gives us an idea of the accident being around an hour after departure,” said Bill Yearwood, Transportation Safety Board regional operations manager for aviation. Headed on a six-hour flight to La Ronge, Sask., the plane crashed in the mountains at an altitude of about 1,980 meters (6,500 feet);
Crawford Bay itself is at an altitude of 536 metres (1,760 feet). Two TSB investigators were taken by helicopter to the crash site, where they attempted to determine the cause of the accident. They discovered that the plane burned after crashing, and a lack of technology was expected to make the investigation challenging. “These smaller aircraft don’t have any recording devices like flight data or cockpit voice,” Yearwood said. “We anticipate having to go with what we find in the debris field, scars on trees, et cetera.” The coroner removed the body for identification on Saturday. The wreckage has also been released to the insurance underwriters, Yearwood said.
Toyota part of economic delegation to China, S. Korea BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Creston Mayor Ron Toyota is a long way from home this week. On Monday he flew westward, part of an economic delegation that is repaying a visit by South Koreans last year. Toyota joins a group that includes Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetsky. A two-day stopover in Taicang, China, will include exploration of lumber and coal opportunities, and meetings will include Shanghai-based representatives from Teck and Canfor. “I’m not sure what might come out of this tour,” Toyota said. “But I am convinced that presenting ourselves as a region and not a bunch of small communities is the best way to go.”
In South Korea, the visiting Canadians will be based in Wonju. “We would like to explore international education, tourism, alternative energy technologies, particularly solar power and agriculture, and a possible center of excellence for College of the Rockies,” said Kevin Weaver, Cranbrook’s business and economic development manager. On the return trip, Toyota is leaving the group to make a visit to Creston’s sister city, Kaminoho, Japan. Kaminoho no longer has a local government and the small farming and forestry community falls under the jurisdiction of nearby Seki City. Toyota, born in B.C. and of Japanese heritage, has visited Japan as a businessman, but this will be his first trip to the Kaminoho area.

Moore promoted to chief of Creston Fire Rescue BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
More than six months after the retirement of fire chief Bruce Mabin, Creston Fire Rescue once again has a fire chief. Deputy Chief Michael Moore was promoted in a ceremony at the June 11 regular council meeting. Moore was given the oath of office by Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, who also read a history of the trumpet as a symbol of firefighters around the world. Three firefighters were appointed to new positions: Randall Fabbro (captain), Dayle MacRae (lieutenant) and Dean Armitage (lieutenant). Not in attendance was Andrew Bibby, who was also promoted to lieutenant. Council Briefs •Couns. Joanna Wilson and Wesly Graham were given approval to attend a School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) ad hoc committee presentation about school catchment review in Salmo next Tuesday. •Council directed staff to
provide details about a proposed “business walk” program for Creston. In the program, councillors would visit businesses in a defined area to learn more about the needs and concerns. •A toilet replacement program is underway to encourage residents and businesses to replace high water use toilets. A total of $8,500 is budgeted for the program. Engineering and public works director Iain Bell reported that all Town of Creston facilities have undergone the conversion. •After a short debate, council approved an application from the Creston Wave Swim Club to allow out of town families of swim meet competitors to camp on community complex property this month. Coun. Jerry Schmalz and Scott Veitch voted against the motion, arguing that local camping facilities are available and should be used. •Engineering manager Colin Farynowski reported that 20 residents in northeast Creston are participating in a compost pickup pilot pro-
gram. Each resident has purchased a small, wheeled compost bin that will be emptied by town staff each Saturday until November. The materials — household and garden organic waste — will be composted as part of a test to explore the feasibility of a town-wide program. •A staff report will present council with options about the red pedestrian crossings on Canyon Street. Bell reported that the coloured application to the pavement is expensive to maintain. Maintenance is a town responsibility, he said, because the province’s highways department only takes responsibility for white paint markings on highways that run through towns. One option, he said, is to simply allow the current red surfacing to wear out over time, but it will have to be removed if the province is to re-assume responsibility to maintain crosswalk markings. The red portions were installed as part of a downtown revitalization program several years ago.

About 220 Creston Valley youth take part in soccer, and if the organization doesn’t find more coaches, the board may consider capping team numbers. The U6 team has 35 members overseen by one coach and two assistants — the goal is to have one coach per nine players, so running that team is a big task. “It makes playing really difficult,” said board member Gwen Benty. “It runs totally on volunteers.” “The one or two adults to 35 players ratio we had this season are not sustainable and not conducive to player development,” said a letter to parents from Mary Griffioen. With the older teams, two coaches and a manager are needed, and with only one adult referee in the Creston Valley, referees are needed, too—both positions receive training and referees are paid through the provincial soccer association. “I don’t think people realize that when you pay your $60, it doesn’t go to pay the coaches,” said Benty, noting that fee — some of the most affordable of any sport — cover administration, equipment and maintenance.
From page 1 In preparation for the 58-kilometre ride, he has been training almost daily since December. Workouts at the Creston Fitness Centre have provided a camaraderie he has come to enjoy in his early morning sessions. And the gym has donated a one-year gym pass that will given out as a prize during National Aboriginal Day festivities on Friday. Pharmasave’s Mike Ramaradhya and Jodie McBlain have been “incredibly generous,” he said. “I asked for a small donation like diabetes testing strips and they came back to me with a one-year pass to the Creston and District Community Complex fitness centre. I didn’t know what to say.” After training for months on a heavy mountain bike, he is grateful to Nadan Nessie Gear, Canyon Street’s outdoor equipment retailer and renter, which is giving him “a great deal” on the use of a lightweight road bike. “I am truly grateful for their support on what I see as a small scale awareness ride,” he said. “I ESTATE SALE BY OWNER was a supply tech in the Canadian Armed Forces and my job was to be a lifeline to the troops, getWest Creston ting them whatever they needed. Due to a lack of volunteers, the Creston association wasn’t able to host its own soccer tournament this year, although six teams from U12 to U18 attended the Terry Walgren Tournament in Nelson. The members of older teams are currently involved in fundraising — money has been easier to obtain than helping hands, and the associ-
ation has sent teams to Costa Rica and England for trips combining recreation and training. “I think it provides a lot of opportunities,” said Benty. Anyone interested is invited to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. June 25 at the Cavell Street Dental Clinic, call Benty at 250-428-5645 or email crestonvalleysoccer@gmail.com.

In the weeks leading up to last month’s provincial election I had conversations with several local Liberal supporters. Like me, they assumed the Christy Clark-led party was doomed, and that the next few years would lead to a major shakeup for a party that, despite its surprise win at the polls, is overdue for a major makeover. Even supporters must have been taken aback at Clark’s announcement of a bloated cabinet, quickly followed by word that the premier’s chief of staff and other ministerial assistants, most of of them Liberal party supporters, were getting pay raises. Not little inflationpace bumps, but leaps of the sort that union employees wouldn’t dare to dream of. Back to pre-election chats. Often, they focused on the need to deep-six Clark, who does not have the Conservative roots that many of the misnamed provincial Liberals were looking for. To some she is more of a federal Liberal, to others a charlatan, an opportunist who never looked more at home than she did when she was out of politics and behind a radio talk show microphone. The party needs to be rebranded with a new vision and leader, and it needs to refocus its catchall approach that sees it trying to shepherd the disparate right and centre interests into an uneasy alliance whose greatest commonality is that they dislike and fear the NDP. That was the gist of our conversations. And those same conversations were going on all around the province at the same time, to the extent that now-irrelevant 801 group was formed in the lead-up to what its
that all Liberals are wealthy, but economic opportunism is without a doubt a driving force. Clark is on relatively safe ground with her superficial opposition to the Enbridge pipeline, for instance, because it won’t leave an economic legacy for the province, and B.C. pretty much turned over the final decision for the pipeline to the federal government a few years ago, anyway. Fracking, the controversial process to extract natural Lorne Eckersley gas from the earth’s bowels, is now going to go full steam ahead, pun intended. The process is that a re-invention of the party already draining regions of surface would begin at 8:01 p.m. on the water and it is polluting undernight of the election. This is the Life
Don’t miss Longest Day of Play
Not to depress anyone, but we have reached the date with the most daylight and it’s all downhill from here; I’m starting to think about snow tires and rolling up hoses. Just kidding — we have a long way to go and the best of summer is on its way after one of our better springs. What does mark June 21 is that it is, as ParticipAction calls it, the Longest Day of Play. As good Canadians, of course, we all know that ParticipAction is a national non-profit society started in 1971 solely to inspire and support active living and sport participation in Canada and became internationally recognized for doing just that. Probably slightly ahead of the curve back then (who knew?) core funding dropped and it had to close its doors in 2001. Obviously, somebody since then started to look around at the flaring rates of diabetes, childhood obesity, inactivity and the general decline of the Roman Empire, so with generous support from Sport Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, ParticipAction was revitalized in 2007 as the national voice of physical activity and sport participation in Canada. Whew, just in time! Anyway, as the national voice of physical activity and sport participa-

Foundations appreciated
foundations in Calgary, Niagara, Chatham Kent and Drayton Valley — and the communities they serve — on their good fortune. Peter Hepher Creston
To the Editor: One hundred and seventeen million dollars! You could almost feel the excitement with which the writer of the bulletin from the Community Foundations of Canada emailed this news to member foundations across the land. In summary, the news was that this was the size of the largest donation ever made to a Canadian community foundation. It had come to the Calgary Community Foundation from “Doc” Seaman (a name probably known to a number of ex-Calgarians now living in this valley). And, under the rules governing community foundations in Canada, over the next century it will grow to $663 million while providing annual grants to non-profit agencies in the Calgary area totalling $1.4 billion. The same bulletin reported other substantial donations recently received by Canadian community foundations: $5.8 million to Niagara, $1.5 million to Chatham Kent and $1 million to Drayton Valley. As a board member of the CrestonKootenay Foundation whose kitty still falls well short of $1 million after seven years of existence, my first reaction to all that was to turn green with envy — figuratively, of course. But then I thought, not only was that mean-spirited, maybe there was some good news for the CKF lurking in those tidings about the foundations reported above. Maybe it meant that the good that community foundations do and how they constitute a form of permanent charitable security for the areas in which they operate has become more widely appreciated than heretofore. Maybe that appreciation has grown or will soon grow among people in our valley, resulting in more enquiries via www.ckfoundation.com. We can hope, can’t we? Meanwhile, congratulations to the
Town taxes too high To the Editor: (Re: This is the Life: “Can we be too generous?”, June 6 Advance) Although an interesting topic, “Can we be too generous?” is somewhat misdirected in regard to the closing line of the column. The closing line of this column says, “We need to at least be aware of the complexity of a small community’s economics.” Economics is a study of how a society handles its scarce resources. The biggest economic problem in the town of Creston is the high residential and commercial taxes — that is why we have empty storefronts and dozens of homes for sale, and few (two in 2012) new home constructions. So our scarcity is human resources to pay those taxes. When I moved here 17 years ago, there were just fewer than 5,000 people in the town of Creston; now there are just over 5,000, yet the property taxes have had amazing increases — greatly out of proportion with the increase in population. And, unless the resident and business owners can get great tax breaks, or a tax-free card like the Ramada, it will be difficult to keep businesses and ultimately, people in the town of Creston. I know people that have moved just outside the town limits because taxes are less. It is not too complex to understand. People want to sell and move out of the town because it is too expensive to own a home and/or run a business within the town limits. Yes, there is big highlighted news about the one or two per cent increase, the point being that there is an increase! Last year, an elderly widow mentioned
to me that it is difficult to feed herself because her house taxes increased by $200. I cringed trying figure out how she is supposed come up with that extra $200. Good thing there is a Food Bank so she can at least be fed! How are the elderly, which is what our population is more and more made up of, on fixed incomes, to cover the increase in property taxes? Can we be too generous about this? Absolutely not — property taxes have to decrease. There are numerous ways this can be accomplished, but that is another topic. Rhonda Barter Creston
Citizens own country’s oil To the Editor: I am a concerned citizen of this great nation we call Canada, which every person born in this country owns — not the politicians, but the ordinary person. We own this country, not the oil companies, which the politicians have allowed to rape us over the years. The price of fuel in Canada is astronomical, related to the price of oil on the international market and our high taxes. We can’t seem to do anything about it, but if our MPs and MLAs had any fortitude they would fight for their constituents, but they don’t, knowing that the higher price of oil puts more tax money in their coffers, and the oil companies are making record profits. I say to all our MPs and MLAs, show some guts, stand up to your socalled leaders and lower the price of oil, go after the oil companies and lower the tax on fuel. For an oil-producing nation, our prices are too high. We own the oil, not oil companies. You are elected to represent us, and our only recourse is at the polls. Show some fortitude like you promised when elected. George Fraser Creston

Library staff pick summer reads
Here at the library, we love books. It’s what we do best. And with summer fast approaching, I’ve invited members of the library staff to help me out by recommending some great summer reads. Pat Tomasic (library assistant) — One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern: Cecelia Ahern’s books are quintessential summer reads; light, fast paced and with just enough of a message to not define them as fluffy. Her latest release is One Hundred Names and centres on failed, disgraced journalist Kitty Logan, who is trying to fulfill the final assignment of her recently deceased friend and mentor. Constance has left behind a list of one hundred names, and it is Kitty’s ambition to find them and the thread between them. Along the way, she finds that everyone, no matter how disparate in personality and circumstance, has a hidden story to tell. And it takes a special person to bring it out. Teresa Fletcher (office manager) — Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny: Louise Penny is an award winning Canadian author whose wonderfully written stories take place in Quebec. The main character is Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec, and her first book, Still Life, takes place in a little village outside of Montreal populated by people you are sure you’ve met before and you just want to sit and have coffee with.
Penny continues to develop her characters in subsequent books and there are many twists and turns you can’t see coming. I could not put the books down and read all eight books in a two-week period!
The Book
Drop
Aaron Francis Andrew Feltham (library technician) — Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett: Terry Pratchett is my favourite fantasy author and this book is one of my favourites. The basic story involves the Auditors (the accountants of the universe) trying to freeze time so that they can remove the chaos (people) from the universe and create order. Trying to stop them are the Personification of Death, Death’s granddaughter Susan (it’s complicated), and the history monks Lu-Tze, “The Sweeper”, and his apprentice Lobsang Ludd. This book has many fun scenes such as chocolate warfare, an apocalypse, shattering all of time, martial arts and sweeping. Margaret Basaraba (library assistant) — Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy: I am reading Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy
and am finding it a touching story. If you like to really get to know the characters in a book this is the author for you. The story revolves around a young man who becomes a single father to a newborn after the mother’s death. The entire community of friends and neighbors helps him to begin raising his little girl. His situation is complicated by the fact that he is a recovering alcoholic. The story really highlights the fact that it does take a community to raise a child. Pat Tomasic (library assistant) — Life After Life by Kate Atkinson: On a cold February day in 1910, a baby girl is born, and dies. End of story? Not quite. This is only the first venture for Ursula Todd in Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life. Atkinson weaves a set of stories of Ursula’s lives and deaths that takes her from idyllic and tumultuous childhoods, from war torn London, to war torn Germany, from marriage and motherhood to spinsterhood. Through Ursula, Atkinson demonstrates how what appears to be a simple choice can have drastic consequences in one’s life. This is a gripping book that may make you think about your own choices. I’ll be back next month with a couple of my own picks. In the meantime, happy reading! Aaron Francis is the chief librarian at the Creston and District Public Library.

Patt was skilled at sewing, knitting, crocheting and other crafts but her strongest talent was encouraging others to do their best. The Kronys’ workshop, at Patt's place, was always busy with Kronys making things to sell for funds for TAPS. Patt would have set up all the sewing machines, turned on the kettle and opened the cookie tin just in time for the Kronys to get started. She had wonderful ideas about what the next project would be and she usually had sewn two or three different versions of what the rest of us could try. She always said, “That's great, good job, now start another one.” Returning from any trip she and her husband Jim made, she would have fabric, yarn, beads, patterns, fibre, ribbon and anything else that could be made into to a craft. Many of the ideas for new products came from these trips. Jim is a very patient man to wait outside so many Rossland 250-362-7009 markets and fabric stores. Castlegar 250-304-2555 The other talent that Trail 250-364-6406 Patt shared was her ability to sell tickets. She and the Kronys hosted raffles as often as possible.

Smell ‘n’ tell
I recently answered the phone to a marketer who was selling insurance to women between the ages of 18 and 55. I don’t fit that demographic anymore. It was an easy way out of an annoying intrusion, but I’m wondering how I got to be over 55.

LKB chief to be library’s next living book CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY
As part of its celebrations to recognize National Aboriginal Day, the Creston and District Public Library features Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie as a living book on June 22. By way of introduction, Louie’s
Patt
From page 8 At the Kronys’ craft fair in May I remember Patt stubbornly stating, “There are only seven more tickets to sell and I'm not going to make the draw until all the tickets are sold.” Of course, all the tickets sold. Patt's encouraging way allowed many women to try things they might not have done; she empowered them. She was tolerant of different views and opinions even when she had strong opinions of her own. Her wish was to make everything the best possible for the seniors from TAPS. Her usual question was, “What do we need here?” She would then make plans for the wish to come true. Another of Patt's sayings that many of us remember was, “You're not building a piano. Get ’er done!” She got things done. Patt was
Ktunaxa (too-NA-ha) name is Kakin Tawu. He was born and raised in the beautiful Creston Valley. His education background is in the health field as a long-term care aide, as well as a diploma in aboriginal governance and management. instrumental in getting TAPS the two buses we have now. The Kronys’ fund raising made it possible for the purchase of part of our big bus and all of our smaller one. Soon you will see the little bus driving around town with a new name, the Patti Wagon. The Krafty Kronys will continue with their great work and TAPS will go on assisting seniors. We will find support and encouragement from each other because we have learned these lessons from Patt. We will not forget her. Krafty Krony Dolly has a belief that makes it easier for me to deal with Patt not being with us anymore. Dolly noted that Patt passed on the day of the Oklahoma tornado. She believes that the Creator needed someone to get things organized so he called Patt. She will get the job done right. served this great country as a reservist in the Canadian Forces, holding the rank of lieutenant. He is a husband to his partner, Angie Louie, and has three beautiful daughters, Misty, Alisha and Jaylin. In August 2012, Louie received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In March, he received the 2013 BC Community Achievement Award for his excellent work in establishing relationships between the Lower Kootenay Band and key agencies in the Creston Valley, such as the RCMP, mayor and town council, and the College of the Rockies, to name a few. He openly built bridges that share the Ktunaxa culture and history. And, in this way, he has created the awareness and knowledge that makes these relationships thrive. At the same time, in his First Nations community, he is engaging the young people in preserving their language, culture and traditions. The Creston library’s Living Books speaker series is a way for community members to learn from each other. Gray Creek Store celebrating 100 years
F
or 100 years, the Gray Creek Store has served Kootenay Lake’s East Shore, offering customers groceries to fireplaces and books to lumber — with 20,000 items in stock, cusStory and tomers can find just about photo by anything imaginable. It’s recently gotten bigBrian Lawrence ger, with a warehouse, built over the winter and replacing a row of oaks planted by founder Arthur Lymbery, housing storage for lumber, woodstoves, drywall, fenceposts and more. “We always knew lumber was needed here,” said Tom Lymbery, the octogenarian son of Arthur. “We’ve sold a lot of building supplies.” When his father started the store in 1913, the Canadian Pacific Railroad line ended at Kootenay Landing, so the company ran the sternwheelers to transport passengers and cargo to the West Kootenay. “He happened to live closest to the sandy beach where the sternwheelers dropped the supplies off when he came here in 1911,” said Lymbery in a 2008 interview. “In 1913, the community got together and asked him to run a store on boat days. In those early years, it was three days a week, and got cut back to two days some of the time, until 1931 when this became a ferry landing.” That happened after the CPR line from Kootenay Landing to Nelson opened in January, and in April 1931, the S.S. Nasookin, leased from the CPR by the provincial government for $90 a day, began making three daily trips from Gray Creek to Fraser’s Landing, a mile north of Balfour. “The first day the ferry ran, my mother remarked that … they had a dollar to put away,” Lymbery said in 2008. “Before that, there was very little cash available. If someone wanted to pay somebody else for work, they would ask my dad to charge his account and credit somebody else’s.” Being adjacent to the ferry landing proved to be an asset throughout the 1930s and 1940s, until the Kootenay Lake ferry system was established between Balfour and Kootenay Bay in 1947. “We saw every salesman because they had to wait for the ferry,” Lymbery said. “My dad was always looking for something different to sell.”
Gray Creek Store owner Tom Lymbery is the son of founder Arthur Lymbery, who opened it in 1913.
That’s still the case — the store has a new coffee bar, and also offers fire logs made of compressed chips from Wynndel Box and Lumber — but as new products become popular, others fall out of use or, as in the case of chainsaws, become readily available elsewhere. The Gray Creek Store used to sell eight different brands, starting in the mids-1950s. “Of course, a chainsaw was a different animal,” Lymbery said. “You had to train people how to use it.” Lymbery had, of course, grown up with the business, but didn’t take a serious role in overseeing it until he returned
from a Vancouver boarding school; education at the Gray Creek school (located in the Gray Creek Hall) only went to Grade 8. “When I came home from that, my folks were having a struggle keeping things running, so I helped out and gradually took over,” he said. Lymbery kept the products diverse and began adding other services, such as selling car insurance in 1955 (before selling that part of the business to the Nelson and District Credit Union a few years ago) and becoming a notary in 1965, allowing him to certify documents and signatures.
By the late 1970s, the Gray Creek Store outgrew its original location, and a new store, the current one, was built next door, with two stories housing its inventory. Lymbery is quick to point out some of the store’s longstanding items, such as Stanfield’s underwear, and some of the more recent, including German “air conditioning” liners for rubber boots, and the Shewee, a portable urinating device for women. “I can’t guess what products we’ll stock in the future,” he said. “But there are still people looking for practical things.” See GRAY, page 13

Kootenay Cove Café offers fresh, flavourful food BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
The parking lot at the Kootenay Lake ferry landing may provide an excellent view of the lake, but on a busy summer day, if the wait drags on, food becomes a priority. Fortunately, relief is close at hand, with Kootenay Cove Café a short stroll away — just look for the new signage by Crawford Bay artist Jacqueline Wedge. Jacq Gibbs took over the restaurant, known for the last couple of decades as Fairy Treats, this year, giving the Kootenay Bay restaurant a new menu, one that caters well to travellers — the goal for one menu section is eight minutes from ticket to table. But she doesn’t plan to rely solely on tourists, and intends to keep the café open year-round. Locals have already been enjoying the food, with the café open for appies and dinner long before tourist season got started. Later this year, the owner plans to add music nights, cooking classes and a fall canning festival. “I’ve got some grandmothers who are going to give tips for the young women in the community,” said Gibbs. Of course, the “kitchen magician” (as she is credited on her business card) can teach a thing or two herself. Much of the restau- Kootenay Cove Café owner Jacq Gibbs.

rant’s baking is done on-site — cinnamon buns, bread and gluten-free products — with local bakers helping to fill in any gaps. But Gibbs’ favourite place is in the kitchen, where she uses homemade soup stock and homemade spice mixtures for Indian, Thai, Mexican and Japanese food — simply, if it’s prepackaged, it’s not a part of the Kootenay Cove Café menu. And she uses local produce as much as possible, with daily specials based on what’s available, cutting down on waste. Cooking is nothing new to Gibbs, who grew up in the Arctic and in Wales, where her parents had a pub, Three Horseshoes. She eventually had a large farm in Alberta, raising animals that were used in movies. And throughout that time, cooking has been part of her life. “At various points in my life over the last 20 years, I’ve either sold my food or cooked for large groups,” said Gibbs. She does mean large. A lot of her cooking has been for work camps and deep in the bush, lugging coolers with each day’s food tidily layered in ice. Once, she even cooked a full roast turkey dinner, complete with all the fixings, over a campfire. Gibbs is never afraid to use full flavour, which means things can end up a
Gray Creek
From page 12 The store is an excellent place to learn more about Kootenay Lake — beyond Lymbery’s encyclopedic knowledge of Kootenay Lake history and dates, the shelves are well stocked with history books, and the Nasookin’s wheel hangs from the ceiling. In 2011, it was donated to the store by Capt. Malcolm MacKinnon’s grandson, Malcolm Metcalfe. Simply because of its location, travel has always been associated with the store’s business — and the store became widely known long before technology made word easy to spread. “If we were just supplying the people in Gray Creek, we wouldn’t survive. Long before online sales, we sold a chainsaw to someone slashing the line between Alaska and B.C.” Through his years running the store, Lymbery has had his wife, Sharon — who was born in Kimberley and moved to Riondel in 1951 — by his side. But before she was his wife, she was a customer. “I met her over the counter,” said Lymbery. Tradition has continued, and the Gray Creek Store is still very much a family business. Under the supervision of manager Debbie Pliska, Lymbery’s son, David, and daughter-in-law, Kris, work there, as do two grandsons each summer. And although Lymbery no longer comes to work every day, he still enjoys the time he spends at the store, and is happy to see the business can run well without him. “The customers become your friends,” he said. “I get so many interesting people in here. ... You’re not sitting behind the counter selling the same thing. People think I have all the answers, but I’m lucky to have such a great staff.” A celebration of Gray Creek Store’s 100th anniversary will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 29. Raffle items include a barbecue, and wood and pellet stoves.
bit spicy. “People are impressed that I haven’t limited what I do,” said Gibbs, who has been in the Kootenays for seven years, and over three on the East Shore. “If I say it’s hot, I mean it.” And she’s not afraid to experiment, gleaning ideas from many sources. “I’ll get out 100 different cookbooks and take a little from here and there, then go into the kitchen and do my own thing,” she said. Lena Makortoff: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, honoured guests, members of the school board, and of course, our fellow grads. Welcome to our graduation ceremony. My name is Lena Makortoff — Stephanie Bohn: — and my name is Stephanie Bohn. Both: It is our honour to be the valedictorians of 2013. SB: We all thought this day would never come. Many of us have been counting down the days, hours and minutes left until we make our debut into the world as adults, but no one could have predicted that the years would have come and gone so quickly. Tonight, as this chapter of our lives concludes, I feel a sense of bittersweet excitement because it means leaving behind friends who have inspired us, teachers who have been our mentors, parents and many other loved ones who have shaped our lives and have forever left their imprints on our hearts. It is your guidance that has built the foundation of who we are today. See TAKE, page 22

On June 13, 1996, the then Governor General of Canada declared June 21 to be National Aboriginal Day, a day for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples to share their various cultural expressions with the rest of Canada. Celebrated annually around the time of the summer solstice, National Aboriginal Day is celebrated by Indigenous peoples across what is often referred to as “Turtle Island.” In recent years, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) has marketed the day as “an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions to Canada.”

Hunger and malnutrition undermine all other humanitarian and development goals. According to the World Food Program every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5% to 10% in lifetime earnings. The cost of under-nutrition to national economic development is estimated at $20 to $30 billion per year.

Obituaries James Russell Osborne
The family of Barry Jeffery would like to give a sincere thank you to everyone who sent flowers, gifts of food, cards, or who donated, visited, or phoned to express their sympathy.
On the late evening of Saturday, June 8, 2013, James Russell Osborne passed from this life at the Creston Valley Hospital at the age of years.
Thank you to Guy Roy and Dennis Kemle, paramedics, Reverend Shelley and the Trinity United Church for all you did to make this sad time a little easier. We will always remember.
October 8, 1938 ~ June 8, 2013
Jim was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta on October 8, 1938, one of Àve siblings born to Tom and Elaine Osborne. Jim had many loves in his life the Àrst and foremost were his wife and two girls. He loved to travel. Jim and Dianne (Dee) experienced many adventures together to different destinations including Mexico, the South and Eastern 8.S. and across Canada to the Maritimes. He had friends from Creston, BC all the way to Mexico. Jim and Dee would have celebrated 50 years together on July , 2013. Jim was a teacher, school counsellor and businessman. He was an active member of many organi]ations, including the Credit 8nion and BC Teachers
Federation. He loved the outdoors and spent much time over the years Àshing, water and snow skiing as well as playing baseball, hockey, and golf. Aside from the home they constructed in Creston (residing there for 20 years), Jim and Dee also purchased a .ootenay Lake property in 19 8 and he loved all his time there with his family (and later his much loved grandchildren). ,n 1988, they moved there permanently. Jim had a smiling and happy disposition. He was always ready to help whatever the need, and he had a generous and positive outlook on life. He will long be remembered for this and for his sense of humour. Jim will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. Left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife Dianne; two daughters Marnie (Gerry) of Redwood City, California and Michelle of Victoria, BC; grandchildren Graham, Sydney and .eslee; brother Tom; and sisters Carol and Susan. He was predeceased by sister Ruth. At Jim’s request, there will be no funeral service; a private family gathering will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Jim’s honor to the BC Cancer Foundation at www.bccancerfoundation.com Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com
Thank you all, Edna Jeffery and Family
With Our Thanks To everyone who
came to celebrate our 65th Anniversary
It was so nice to see everyone. We really appreciated your thoughtfulness in making our day so special. Thanks to all the family that helped put it together.

Take time to reflect on ‘insurmountable’ obstacles From page 14 Graduation is a time to reflect on the past, the present and the future. Remember the first day of elementary school — we all had fresh minds and were full of enthusiasm. We were ready to begin our lives as “big kids” — or what we thought were big kids. Life was simple back then. Our biggest concerns consisted of who could run faster, or what to bring to show and tell. At the time, a broken crayon felt like the end of the world. Yet, as time progressed, a lot has changed. Instead of worrying about broken crayons, we worried about broken hearts. Passing our classes and making decisions about our future has become our biggest concern. We used to be so confident about our future, because it was so far away. Our future, however, is now and as we prepare ourselves to step into the next chapter of our lives we are worried that we haven’t made the right choices. We need to realize that it’s OK to be unsure about our own future because undoubtedly, we will change our minds, and change them again because nothing is permanent. LM: When we were little, people always asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. We enthusiastically responded with various professions, such as doctors, astronauts, rock stars, or firemen — our innermost dreams. Now that we are here and the question is more imminent, it’s scary if we still don’t really know — but now isn’t the time to worry about that. This is the time in our lives to make mistakes, and make as many as we can. Beverly Sills once
said, “There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” Making mistakes is inevitable, and it is vital we make them in life. It is through our errors that we learn the most about ourselves. Over the course of the next few years, we are free to make our own choices, whether right or wrong, and we will adapt and grow from each experience. If we make a wrong turn and get lost somewhere along the way, we must be resilient and discover new beauty in all of the destinations we reach. SB: Growing up, I was always told to protect my heart. However, the harder I tried, the more difficult I realized the task was. After all, weren’t hearts made to be broken? I came across what I believed was my first heartbreak in Grade 1. Justin Timberlake, my favourite member of the boy band ’N Sync, started dating Britney Spears. Back then, I believed that I would never have to deal with anything worse. Unfortunately, I was wrong. When I was 10, my dad lost his battle to cancer. While this was far from a blessing for our family, we became stronger from dealing with the loss. I was inspired to work harder in school. Every test I passed was a step closer to graduation, a step closer to living my own life and a step closer to the better life that my dad wanted for me. I know that I am not the only one that has faced hardships within our class. Together, we’ve been through an endless amount of accidents, broken bones and the losses of loved ones. We’ve pushed limits and found a place to stand, for the time being.
Today, however, isn’t a day to dwell on our past sorrows. It’s a day to celebrate what we have overcome. I ask you, fellow PCSS grads of 2013, to embrace your past and take it forward with you as a reminder that you have already overcome what once seemed impossible. I ask you to remember that the experiences we have encountered, despite how difficult they may have been, for they have shaped us into who we are today. The walls that we choose to climb in the future will be the obstacles that form us into the some of the strongest people this world will see. LM: Always remember the importance of chasing the passions and dreams you possess, that you know in your heart will make a difference in the world. Life is full of roadblocks and obstacles, and the choices you make when you encounter these obstacles will define your future. They are not there to discourage you or prevent you from achieving your goals, but there only to teach you valuable life lessons that will lead to personal growth. When the sweet pea meets a wall, does it stop growing? No. It does what is believed to be impossible. It defies the laws of gravity and climbs the wall, creating something beautiful as it flourishes. I ask you, PCSS grads of 2013, to follow the sweat pea’s example and climb every wall you come in contact with. Commit to your dreams, pursue them and always persevere — strive to create something beautiful out of your lives. Undeniably, there will be times in your life where things will fall into place and
you will climb the wall, flawlessly and effortlessly. Despite this, do not fear the times when you find yourself struggling to make it over. Do not be afraid to take a moment to stop and reflect on your life when the challenges seem insurmountable. There is always a way. Whichever way we approach the walls that are in our future, we will deal with the rain until the sun shines again. We will blossom and thrive. The next chapter of our lives has not yet been written, and we have the power to create a masterpiece. We have the ability to achieve heights we never thought we could reach, to take advantage of opportunities life hands us, and to seize each and every moment we are given. Today, we ask of you to take advantage of your abilities and use them to influence this world in a positive manner. Live the life you love and, most importantly, enjoy the life that you are living. On that note, we would like to leave you with a quotation: “What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty in others; to leave the world a bit better — whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson. Both: Our wish for you, grads of 2013, is that when you look back on your lives, you feel like you have been successful.

Creston golfer O’Keefe headed to provincials Trail Times
Rossland-Trail’s Brad Harding and Creston’s Kowan O’Keefe captured top spots in their respective B.C. Golf provincial qualifiers over the second weekend of June. One dozen senior golfers and 10 amateur golfers, representing six area courses, teed up for the two-day zone provincial qualifiers held at Christina Lake on Saturday and Rossland’s Redstone Resort on Sunday. Up for grabs were four berths in each division and a chance to compete for a provincial title. “Once again the courses were in good condition and the players enjoyed the challenge the two different courses provided,” said Don Courson, B.C. Golf’s Zone 1 West chair. Harding topped the field in the seniors event carding a 73 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday for a two-day total of 150. That was 10 strokes better than his nearest competitor Dan Knutson of Castlegar. Knutson, who posted a total of 160, was one of three Castlegar golfers to make the final four in the senior flight. On the amateur side, O’Keefe got off to a Guy Bertrand blazing start on Saturday and never looked back. The Creston-based golfer fired a six- Creston’s Kowan O’Keefe in action. under par 30 on the front nine at Christina Lake and finished with a 68 on the first day. Three-day party celebrates Lister resident’s 90th SUBMITTED
Seventy guests from far and wide came to the West Creston Hall where a three-day event in honour of Elizabeth Knutson’s 90th birthday was held from May 18-20. It was a time of visiting, playing games and enjoying the non-ending supply of delicious food. On the Sunday evening, a special dinner was held with the highlight of each member of the family presenting Elizabeth with a flower, making a large bouquet. Each of her children spoke to her as they presented their flower, addressing her value to each of them. In attendance were six children, eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Many family members wore
