parwood child abductor Randall Hopley will have a dangerous offender hearing in Cranbrook Supreme Court starting on October 7. Hopley pleaded guilty last March to abduction of a child under 14, and break and enter with the intent to commit an offence. The charges stem from the September 2011 abduction of then three-year-old Kienan Hebert from his bed in his parents' home in Sparwood.

An amber alert was issued on September 7, 2011 when his parents woke up and realized their young son was missing. The alert said that the little boy had been wearing nothing but Scooby Doo boxer shorts when he disappeared. After an intensive search operation, Kienan was returned to his home unharmed in the middle of the night by his abductor four days later. On September 13, 2011, a police sniffer dog tracked Hopley to a gravel pit at Crowsnest Lake, Alberta,

near the cabin where he had kept Kienan. Hopley's sentencing hearing began last July. Before Justice Heather Holmes, the court heard that Hopley chose the Hebert home because he noticed toys in the yard and found the front door unlocked. He also said that he returned Kienan four days later because the child asked to go home. Last August, Crown prosecutor Lynall Doerksen asked that the court consider Hopley for dangerous offender status.

This rarely used criminal designation sets apart offenders of violent or sexual offences who are deemed likely to reoffend and whose release is considered a threat to society. Hopley has remained in custody since August pending the dangerous offender hearing, a continuation of the sentencing hearing that began last July. On Monday, June 17, Crown counsel and Hopley's defense counsel William Thorne agreed that the hearing could be held starting on October 7, 2013,

in Cranbrook. Hopley did not appear in person or via video for the brief matter.

ernie youth ran, kicked, headed, and scored this past weekend in Fernie Youth Soccer’s seasonend tournament. The June 15 event had kids, ages six to 12, playing in the noncompetition games, hosted at the Fernie Secondary and Isabella Dicken fields. Along with cheering on the players, families were also able to participate in a timed soccer obstacle course that pitted parents against kids, and to test their kicking power with the RCMP’s radar gun. “We hope to make it even more family oriented next year, with even more activities” said organizer, Susan Rohn. “We’ve had a lot of new volunteers this year and they’ve put a lot of work into the club. It’s just going to help move the club forward, and give more opportunities to the kids.” Although no one is exactly sure on when Fernie Youth Soccer began, estimates put the league at over 40 years old. “I think it’s an inexpensive sport that is accessible to every kid,” said Rohn on the success of the event. “It’s great for fitness and learning sportsmanship and playing on a team. It’s fun — it’s just a lot of fun.”

Barnett sentenced Pin winner $1,000 richer to time served By Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff

Fernie man whose case was set to go to trial Tuesday in Cranbrook Supreme Court has pleaded guilty at the last minute. Robert Barnett was in Cranbrook Supreme Court on Monday morning, June 17, to tell Justice Joel Groves that he had fired his lawyer one day before the trial was set to begin. Barnett pleaded guilty on Monday afternoon to abduction by a parent or guardian and was sentenced to time served plus one day. He was charged in connection with the November 2012 abduction of his threeyear-old son from Fernie. The incident last November sparked an amber alert, and the boy was found safe the next day sleeping in a car with his father in Whitefish, Montana. Initially representing himself, Barnett hired a defence lawyer to represent him during his bail hearing in April and the upcoming trial. However, on Monday, June 17, his defence counsel told the Supreme Court justice that Barnett has terminated her services. After Justice Groves gave Barnett time to speak to prosecutor Lynall Doerksen, Barnett returned to the court room and said he intends to plead guilty in the case. Later on Monday, Barnett pleaded guilty to the abduction,

telling Justice Groves that it was a mistake. Doerksen told the court that Barnett had been granted sole custody of his son Alvin last fall because his wife, Alvin's mother, was dealing with addiction issues. However, in October, the Ministry of Children and Families removed Alvin from his father's care after receiving reports that he was not adequately providing care for the boy. There was never any allegation of abuse. On November 15, Robert Barnett was having a supervised visit with his son at his place of work, a motel in Fernie, when the father and son left the room, telling the supervisor they were going to get a game. They never returned and an amber alert was issued. Doerksen said Barnett appeared

to have made the decision hastily out of frustration with custody proceedings in court. The father and son crossed the border at the Roosville crossing. The vehicle they were in was found early the next morning with Robert and Alvin Barnett sleeping inside in Whitefish, Montana. Alvin was returned unharmed to the custody of the Ministry of Children and Families. Robert Barnett was extradited to Canada later that month. He was in custody until April 8 when he was released on bail, a total of 144 days. Barnett now has work and is working to have custody of his young son returned to him. A charge of theft against Barnett was dropped by Crown counsel.

Cadets celebrate in Fernie and Sparwood By Adam MacDonald Contributor

ernie cadets celebrated 49 years of service this year at their annual cadet review. Dignitaries from across the province joined the cadets and staff of the #2757 cadet corps for the June 1 inspection, carried out by LieutenantColonel Mason Stalker. “An annual cadet review is not just a culminating day, it's a celebration of family,” said Stalker in a post-awards speech. Cadets showed off their marching and shooting skills during the review, as well as their knowledge of military practice via displays at the Fernie Cadet Hall. “I’m very proud of each cadet on parade today,” said Capt. Peaches Pennock, commanding officer of the 2757. Among the awards handed out, were the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence, going to Sgt. Alias Engelhardt, and the Lord Strathcona Medal, going to CWO Breanna Howard. On the importance of the cadet movement, Stalker said:

“Everything that I needed to know to be a LieutenantColonel in the Canadian Armed Forces, I learned while I was in cadets. The cadet movement is probably the best kept secret in Canada, and that concerns me, because this secret is worth sharing.” Fernie hosts one of 44 army cadet corps in BC, supported by various organizations, including the Royal Canadian Legion and the

Fernie Rotary Club. The 279 Elk Valley Air Cadets in Sparwood also put on an impressive show for family, friends and invited guests at their annual ceremonial review May 29. Grad time brings with it lots of opportunities for parents, and every other adult involved in students’ lives, to give lots of well meaning and worldly advice. Most of it will probably fall on deaf ears. We all remember being teenagers and thinking we knew everything, right? But hopefully some of the advice will stick, especially the advice on staying safe at all the grad parties. There is no single solution that fits every child and parent, in terms of how to safely navigate grad. Some parents will choose to manage it in ways others won’t; for instance, allowing their kids and friends to drink under their supervision, hoping this will offer some control. Other parents will take the position that it’s a rite of passage that kids are going to drink and party around grad time, but they’ll insist on knowing where the young revelers are going to be and reinforce that they will be a phone call away to ferry them safely home. And others will simply hope that the no-alcohol rules they have laid down will be adhered to. There is something about grad time that makes even the wisest, most mature student succumb to peer pressure and drink to excess. Of course, underage drinking is illegal, but, realistically, a lot of students feel that ‘fitting in’ with their peers is more important than abiding by the law. It’s tough for parents, but they must do their best to guide their young people in the best way they can. Drinking can lead to a lot of things kids don’t expect because they haven’t had a lot of experience with it, beyond simply acting goofy or throwing up. In the latest B.C. Adolescent Health Survey by the McCreary Centre Society, which polled over 29,000 B.C. public school students in grades 7 to 12, youths who used drugs or drank in the year prior reported many serious consequences. They said they’d damaged property, got into trouble with police, into a fight, into a car accident, were injured, lost friends or a boy/girlfriend, passed out or had sex when “I didn’t want to.” Bad things can happen when you lose control — things that can have serious implications for the rest of your life. So if you haven’t had that talk, or want a few other points to ponder, tear this out and share it with your teen. You just never know what is going to make a difference. We congratulate all those in the Class of 2013 and wish you a safe and fun graduation.

get confronted by bears? It happens so seldom, and yet that one random confrontation gets sensationalized and exposed incessantly in the media. Generally, bears are as afraid of you as you are of them. They will usually avoid confrontation at all costs, unless they are protecting their cubs! There are over 2,000 people who die in car accidents every year in Canada and yet we hardly ever hear about it. One bear attack (whether benign or serious) and there is national media coverage. The result – unrealistic fear rules the public at large. Realistically, there is a much higher chance that you will be hit by lightning or that the car ride to the trailhead will be much more dangerous than a walk in the woods. Search and Rescue conduct overnight rescue of fallen hiker By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff

earch and Rescue (SAR) members from Fernie and Sparwood’s SAR teams were involved in a major technical rescue mission during the night of Monday, June 17. A 28-year-old local man became stranded on a cliff face after scrambling after his dog on a day hike and suffering a fall. He sustained some relatively minor arm injuries during the

fall, but found himself stranded on a narrow two-metre ledge above a 30-metre drop. He was able to reach family members and inform them of his location and predicament. The RCMP were contacted and they in turn called Fernie Search and Rescue at around 10 p.m. Members were called out and staged on the River Road Extension opposite the tunnel near Elko. 4X4s and ATVs were used to ferry equipment

and personnel up a forest service road that provided the closest access point to begin a hike to the location. Assessing the need for a technical rope rescue, 20 SAR members spent a number of hours hiking in over 200 kg of specialized technical rope rescue equipment through a very steep and treacherous section of forest to get near to the stranded subject. Rope rescue team members were then able to climb around

15 m above the man, set up a rope rescue system, lower a rescuer down to him, secure him and haul him safely back to the top. The man was reunited with his father and then joined the rescue crews hiking out of the forest after receiving first aid for his arm injury. Teams returned to Fernie’s SAR hall and stood down shortly after 6 a.m. “The Valley’s SAR teams have continued to certify members in Rope Rescue so we

Keeping bears out of homes – are you getting the message? By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff

onservation officers and wildlife experts will be going door to door this week, trying to get the message out about keeping bears away. The team will be focusing on problem areas where there have been a number of complaints about people managing their garbage poorly, or attracting bears in other ways, such as having dirty barbecues, keeping pet food outdoors and leaving fruit on and under their trees. Conservation Officer Joe Garay said he hopes the message is getting across to people, but there are still many that just don’t seem to get it. “We have been attempting to educate people for years,” he said, “but now it seems we will need to start enforcing it.” Conservation officers can issue tickets from a $50 bylaw violation ticket up to a $345 provincial ticket for repeat offenders. Although there have been a number of bear sightings in the Valley already, Garay said summer is when the problem gets worse. “We want to get out and educate people

now, so they can hopefully keep bears away in summer,” he said. “Residents aren’t always happy to see us, or willing to listen. They can get quite upset at us for asking them not to store their garbage outside. They feel like if they pay taxes, they have the right to do that. But we are hoping that they will come around.” Garay, Kathy Murray, and other experts will be visiting residences and businesses in Elkford today (Thursday) from 1 to 9 p.m. and Fernie tomorrow (Friday) from 1 to 9 p.m.

tudents from Isabella Dicken Elementary School and Fernie Secondary School joined together to present an evening of music during the schools’ final music performance of the year. The June 5 concert began with student, Sean LeBlanc, taking the director’s position, as he could not play due to a broken arm. Then, students took the audience through a spectrum of tones, produced by several grade 6 and 7 concert bands, a choir group, and the electronic sounds of digital audio production. The students first started playing in September and have given two other concerts throughout the school year. “I had a blast at the concert,” said music teacher, David Pasivirta, who recently moved to Fernie with his wife and two children to fill the vacant music director position. “I'm so happy to be

here, and I am glad that this community is becoming a home to me and my family.” “Students need to be able to learn the traditional as well as

current methods of producing music,” said Pasivirta, noting his plans to develop senior bands, infuse a jazz/rock/ funk aspect to the program,

and to also further develop the digital recording side of the program.

Property Tax Notices for the City of Fernie have been mailed to all property owners on record. Property taxes are payable by July 2, 2013, after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current year taxes. Provincial ombudsman visits area By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff

s part of her ongoing initiative to bring the Office of the Ombudsperson to communities throughout British Columbia, Ombudsperson Kim Carter will visit Sparwood on Monday, June 24. The Provincial Ombudsperson will be meeting with public agencies that fall under her jurisdiction and with community groups and speaking about her office’s role in ensuring provincial and public agencies treat British Columbians fairly. She will be speaking about her

recent systemic investigation into seniors’ care, adult guardianship and open meetings on best practices for local governments. The tour also provides an opportunity for members of the public to make a complaint in person, as they can meet with investigators to discuss their concerns about a public agency. “We’re here to serve the entire province, I want people to know that if they have not been successful in resolving their problems with the public agency and still feel they have not been treated fairly and reasonably, they can come to us”, says Carter. “While the

office receives the majority of complaints by telephone, mail or online, some people are more comfortable meeting face-toface when raising their concerns and I feel it’s important that this opportunity is available to people throughout the province.” The Ombudsperson is an independent officer of the legislature. The office’s mandate is to impartially investigate complaints to ensure that provincial and local public agencies treat the people they serve fairly and reasonably. of groups,” said Jennifer Krotz, CBT Community Liaison. “The renovation project will help improve it for those who currently use it, plus increase opportunities for the centre to expand, increase membership and offer new programs to the broader community.” The seniors club has existed since 1960, providing a place for Fernie seniors to meet and socialize. In conjunction with the application to the LCLB to change the liquor licence the proponents have also applied to the City for a Licence of Occupation that, if approved, will allow a new outdoor patio to occupy a portion of the municipal roadway adjacent to their establishments. The Licence of Occupation limits the operating season of the patio from May 1st to and including October 15th and stipulates that the patio shall not be operated between the hours of 10:00pm and 7:00am. Persons who feel that they may be affected by either the Brick House’s application to change their Liquor Primary and Liquor Primary Club Licence or the Infinitea T-Bar & Boutique’s application to change their Food Primary Liquor Licence to add an outdoor patio are invited to submit written comments to Michelle Martineau, Director of Corporate Administration Services no later than 5:00pm on Monday, June 24, 2013. False alarms are costly, time consuming, and create a potential safety risk for the District. This information will provide you with a brief overview of the definition of what constitutes a “false alarm”; however if you would like more detail, please refer to the actual “Security Alarm Bylaw 1120, 2013.” Original copies of the bylaw are available by contacting the District Office. What is the law? A "false alarm" means the activation of a security alarm system, resulting in the direct or indirect notification of the Police Department and the attending at real property from which such alarm originated and where the Police Department finds no evidence of criminal activity or other emergency situation(s). False alarm includes, but is not limited to: a) The testing of an alarm which results in a Police Department response; b) An alarm actually or apparently activated by mechanical failure, malfunction or faulty equipment; c) An alarm activated by user error; d) An alarm reporting a police or other emergency situation occurring on or in relation to real property from which such alarm originated and no credible evidence exists or where no such event took place; or e) An alarm actually or apparently activated by atmospheric conditions, excessive vibrations, or power failure. Warnings will be issued for the first offence and a fine of $150.00 will be issued for the second offense and will double with each subsequent offence. Tips to Prevent False Alarms • Alarm systems should receive regular maintenance and testing to ensure they are functioning properly. • Check for drafts that may cause curtains, plants or decorations to set off motion detectors. • Be sure everyone in the family, guests, cleaners and contractors or at the business knows how to properly operate the security system. • Motion detectors require additional care to prevent false alarms. Ensure pets are not allowed to roam freely through the area that is covered by the motion detector. Do not keep balloons in an area covered by motion detectors.

The knockout competition consisted of three hotly contested rounds followed by semi finals and a grand final. Competition was fierce and every round was marked by high tension. Hudson Hare taking runner up. Third place winner was Kelly Bannatyne and Jacob Brown took fourth place. Beyblade prizes were kindly donated by Extra Foods. “We had a lot of really talented kids who enjoyed what they were doing.” After some difficulty in locating the puppets for the show, Sinclair was finally able to rent the puppets from a school in Prince George and have a relative pick them up. “We’ve worked with them, changed them, added to them, and stuffed them with more foam,” said Sinclair, noting that the used puppets needed some love after sitting in a closet for years. “The performances were awesome,” said male lead, Liam Faucher, noting that the students had a rocky dress rehearsal. “We just kind of went right into it and each night we got more confident and everybody brought up the energy. It was a lot of fun.”

ernie Secondary students entertained audiences last week with three performances of this year’s drama production, Little Shop of Horrors. Although most musicals have a happy ending, where all the conflicts get resolved and all the characters fall in love, Little Shop of Horrors took audiences through a rags to riches love story that ended in everyone getting eaten by a, literally, blood-thirsty plant. The prop-dependent play had students backstage manning large puppets, while their colleagues acted and sang out front. “I think this is the best ensemble we’ve had in a long time,” said director, Lorie Sinclair.

precise markers. You will develop an appropriate routine for your style. Developing a routine requires that you pay

attention and adjust your position for every shot. Once your routine is well-established, you only need to focus, because you will always be in the correct position. Unfortunately, many golfers hold the grip in the palm of their hands like a hammer. Instead, try holding it with your fingers. At the beginning, it will feel uncomfortable because it is unfamiliar. Of the three types of grips, one is as good as the other. Get curious and try them all. The right choice is a compromise between ease and result. The grip should suit the size of your hands and the length of your fingers. Holding your club incorrectly will affect the position of your club in some way. Before you even initiate a swing, this simple correction will reduce

the risk of multiplying your mistakes. The two knuckles (index and major) on the top hand are an easy marker to check: the knuckles on the left hand for a right-handed golfer, for example. The Wild Mountain Fernie Ultra on June 29 will treat runners to a challenging and beautiful route, covering approximately 80 km with 3 km of climbing to spectacular alpine vistas and includes popular Fernie trails like Sherwoody, Tamarack, Verboten, Mushroom Head, and Hyperventilation with transition areas

Enduro combines the fitness of getting yourself to the top of the mountain in a fun and friendly non-competitive atmosphere, with a timed competitive descent ranking based on the rider’s combined time over the designated downhill portions. The format is appealing because it exemplifies the mountain biking experience, fostering camaraderie on the climbs and adrenaline and friendly

competition on the descents. Several top cross-country mountain bike pros are switching to racing Enduro for the 2013 season. The Wild Mountain Fernie Enduro will feature the GSL GM City pure format Enduro, 39 km route with four timed technical descents, Verboten, Project 9, Red Sonya and Roots Hyper Extension. Riders will be ranked in the Enduro results – with only the descents timed, and in the cross country results – with a time for the entire 38.7 km course. With four descents totaling 1,822m, the Fernie Enduro will offer a World Class Enduro experience. The Fernie Hotel is running an outdoor beer garden both days. Locals are welcome to come out and watch the excitement unfold.

This important improvement project is necessary to meet current demand and future growth in Fernie. Upgrading the substation with new equipment will allow BC Hydro to continue to provide clean reliable power to Fernie business and residential customers now and in the future. Opportunities to learn more about the project will be provided and advertised. It is anticipated that Project Information Meetings will be scheduled later this year and construction activity is expected to begin in early 2014, with project completion in fall 2015. PARON: With loved ones at his bedside, 85 year old Bruno Paron passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Bruno was born in Arzene, Italy on March 5, 1928 to parents Tony and Maria Paron. For 31/2 years Bruno worked in the mines of Belgium until 1951 when he immigrated to Canada. In 1953, via Proxy, Bruno married Maria Berto, the beautiful Italian girl who captured his heart during a two year long distance relationship. Maria joined Bruno in Canada and together the couple raised 3 children and would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this summer. Bruno’s greatest joy in life was being with his family, and they will miss the sound of him whistling a happy tune and greeting them with a warm smile. Bruno will be dearly missed by Maria, his wife of 59 years, 3 children: Anthony (Deborah) Paron, Luciana (Greg) Derkach, and Bruna (Mark) Paniec, 6 grandchildren: Tara (Jaret) Bogusky, Chad (Brandy) Paron, Nathan Paron, Dustin (Ashley) Derkach, Lance (Stephanie) Derkach and Amy Paniec, 6 great grandchildren: Morgan, Erikah & Kendyl Bogusky, Emma & Isabella Paron and Chase Derkach, and his brother Moris (Irma) Paron and his nephew Mark. MULHOLLAND: Arthur Dick Mulholland, 79, of Burlington, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia to Arthur and Gwendolyn Mulholland, he lived most of his life in Toronto, Ontario and Fernie, British Columbia. Dick is survived by his daughter Marjie Fraser (Michael), his sons Don (Pamela) and Matt Mulholland (Natasha), his step-son Michael Thompson (Carolyn), his brother David Mulholland and his three grandchildren Richard Mulholland, Curtis Fraser and Daniel Fraser. He was predeceased by his loving and much adored wife Billie (Plomer) Mulholland and both of his parents. Dick was a loving husband, father, son and grandfather and he was a friend to all. He, like his mother, always flashed a loving and warm smile that made everyone feel a bit better and warm inside, even at the worst of time. He spent the majority of his life working at the TD Bank in Toronto, Vancouver and then Fernie. He loved Fernie so much that even after leaving the bank, he stayed there and eventually became mayor, a position that he held for over two terms and during which time he put his heart and soul into many projects that remain in Fernie to this day. It was a very hard decision for him to leave Fernie after the loss of his wife and to come back to Ontario, but it is a decision he never regretted. He spent his last six years with his family and seeing the world. He never stopped living life to the fullest and was an inspiration to all. WHITE, RONALD GEORGE Ron passed away peacefully at home on June 14, 2013 at the age of 70 with his wife of 43 years, Erika, by his side. Ron is also survived by his son Ross (daughter in-law Andrea), daughter Heather (son in-law Martin), grandchildren Jane, Noel and Robyn, and sister Dorothy. A consummate storyteller and debater, he loved nothing more than lively conversation, and we who were fortunate enough to have known him look forward to remembering and retelling those stories with a good dose of laughter. CERNY: Stuart Myles Cerny passed away at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster on June 13th, 2013 at 12:45am at the age of 61. He was born November 26, 1951 in Natal, BC to Myrtle and Anthony Cerny and is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth Ann Cerny of 40 years; married in Sparwood, BC on July 15th, 1972. Stuart is lovingly remembered by his two sons Craig (Tara) Cerny of Elkford BC, Keith (Fiona) Cerny of Coquitlam BC; daughter Crystal (Karl) Cerny-Steinicke of Nainamo BC; older brother Larry (Pat Allardyce) Cerny of Fernie BC; twin sister Sheryl (Sam) Stephenson of Sparwood BC; youngest sister Pamela (Ted) Rozborski of Victoria BC; grandchildren Kaden, Aviya, Amelia and Owen Cerny; as well as many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends with which he has left a loving and lasting impression. Stuart was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved exploring the surrounding mountains and rivers of the Elk Valley with his family and friends. He also had a deep appreciation for music playing his guitar daily for the enjoyment himself and of those around him. At age 52 Stuart and Beth moved to New Westminster where frequently they would explore the surrounding city walking for hours and he would share photos of his unique finds such as buildings, barges and bridges with those he loved. Even though Stuart travelled away his heart has always stayed in the Elk Valley. Although he is no longer with us Stuart has passed on a special gift of loving the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He touched the lives of everyone he met with his unique humour and caring heart as if he had known them for years, even though he may have just met them. His adoration for his children and grandchildren was both beautiful and from his loving heart. Stuart had a special and amazing gift of love and caring that will be missed and remembered always. A gathering of family and friends in celebration of Stuart’s life will be held from 12 noon to 3pm Sunday June 23rd at the Seniors Centre located at 101 4th Avenue, Sparwood BC. RUFIANGE: Fred Rufiange passed away quietly with loved ones by his side on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. He was born on October 22, 1936 in Dapp, Alberta. Fred was the 8th of 11 children born on the family farm to parents Raoul and Blanche Rufiange, growing up in a large, loving family. The Rufiange family was self-sufficient with everyone playing a role in making the farm run smoothly. Going into town (Westlock) was a “big deal”, and Fred would be sent to the neighbors to see if they needed a ride or a list they needed picked up. Fred was raised in a devout Catholic home and never missed a Sunday Mass, and their bedtime prayers always included the Rosary. Fred’s first job was at Port Radium, NWT on Great Bear Lake where he worked at a refinery. Throughout the years he worked in many different places including Dapp, Fort St. John, Tuktoyaktuk, Edmonton, Penticton, and in 1970, Fred settled into his own business in Rossland, BC. His move to Fernie in 1974 brought a new ownership in a new gas bar at the Fernie Esso where he remained the friendly face behind the counter for over 20 years. He loved Fernie and enjoyed hunting every fall, fishing in the summer, berry picking, camping and visiting. Fred made many friends at the Esso and cherished every relationship. He volunteered at the Holy Family Parish; he was a 3rd Degree Knight and was also involved with the Society for Community Living. Fred was predeceased by his parents Raoul and Blanche Rufiange, brothers Leo, Guy and Remi, his sister Rea Knott and brothers-inlaw Ray Knott and Alex Dotto.
