Eager - A group of youngsters waited in anticipation with their bags for the next parade entrant distributing candy during Saturday’s ‘Parade of the Century’ celebrating Sylvan Lake’s 100th birthday. Others along the route clapped to show their appreciation for the floats. Thousands of people lined the parade route to watch 71 entries file by during about 45 minutes. Wet weather held off with just a few drops falling as the end of the parade hit Lakeshore Drive on the route home. See more parade photos and Centennial event coverage on pages 8, 12, 13 and 14. Sylvan’s Centennial celebrations well attended, enjoyed, appreciated by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

“WOW!”, was the first word out of Brenda Dale’s mouth when asked her thoughts on Sylvan Lake’s Centennial celebrations. “Volunteers took on leadership roles and built their teams. It’s amazing how they all worked together, sometimes with very little direction,” said Dale, who’s chairperson of the committee which organized the community’s celebration. “They were fun to be with, amazing.” She was particularly happy with the Dance of the Century. “We had

way more people than what we expected … the fun factor, the enjoyment of people in the room.” Many long time residents knew what to expect, she indicated, and “newcomers who did come were amazed at how much fun they could have”. Another thing that overwhelmed her was the extent to which people went in dressing in costume. “It was way more than I expected.” About 750 people flowed through the multiplex during the 10 hours of dancing, Dale estimated. The dance floor was busy and there were lots of kids. “We always meant this to be a dance party for families,” she said,

noting their goal was accomplished with at least three generations of people participating. The transition from the big band era through the Varsity Hall days to rock and roll and finally the current era with the Boom Chucka Boys was great, Dale enthused, crediting Len Thompson for a lot of the success. Sound man Sean McIntyre also got kudos from Jazz Explosion who’s members said it was their best performance ever because they were able to hear themselves playing. Dale said she consulted the arena manager in the community where she grew up and got “some very sound advice” on how to lay out the room, deal with food and keep it a

closed ticketed event to eliminate any problems with rowdyism. Kerry Edgecombe did a “great job decorating” the multiplex. Lions Club members handled the bar and Remi’s Catering provided the food. “We had great support from merchants donating prizes, sponsoring decades and promoting the event for us,” said Dale. Because of that half the tickets were already sold before they started their advertising campaign. “Reaching our goal was easy with that help. We could probably have sold 1,200 tickets but we could only put so many people in the building safely.” Feedback she’s received is that the dance was the best event in the

multiplex yet. A personal highlight for Dale was participating in the parade, playing saxophone with friends in the Red Deer Community Adult Marching Band. However she experienced a few minutes of anxiety when she opened her case at the parade marshalling area 20 minutes before it was supposed to start and discovered she didn’t have her music. She raced home but couldn’t find it. She located the music at the multiplex where she’d set down her instrument while preparing for the dance later that day. And she was back to the marshalling area in time to begin the parade. Continued on Page 3

The right paint and colour can not only protect the exterior of your home, but also express your personal style. Mother Nature’s punishing effects on a house invariably come to light as we launch into warmer weather and longer days. Exterior paints and stains are a home’s best protection against the elements, and how long and how well an exterior paint or stain will do its job to protect a house depends on the quality and type of the paint or stain, the quality of the preparation, and the quality of the application.

Icelanders from across the province celebrated Iceland’s National Day in Markerville Saturday, and witnessed the crowning of their new Fjallkona. Gwen Mann of Leif Eiriksson Icelandic Club of Calgary received the honour, which translates to ‘maid of the mountain’. In her role, she will act as a representative of Icelandic culture at various events including galas and conventions. “It’s always a lady who has been very active in the Icelandic community and who holds very high honour and values,” said Brooke Henrikson, manager of Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society (SGSIS) in Markerville. Mann was accompanied by daughter Sheralyn and granddaughter Audrey as she received the crown. The Fjallkona attire she wore symbolized the beauty of Icelandic landscape and the richness of Icelandic culture. Mann grew up in rural Saskatchewan, and joined the Leif Eiriksson Icelandic Club in 1994. Doing so allowed her to learn more about Icelandic culture, and eventually visit the country in 1995. “Making that trip in 1995 and visiting with my relatives there seemed to connect all my Icelandic thoughts,” she said. “Seeing where all my ancestors originated from and hearing more about each person’s individual story was overwhelming.” Mann’s grandparents immigrated to Canada from Iceland in the early 20th century. Mann eventually came into possession of letters written by her maternal grandmother describing life in Canada to her mother and brother in Iceland. “I’ve frequently thought how difficult it must have

Sylvan’s Centennial has already created tremendous memories but it’s not over yet We’ve got to echo the comment by Sylvan Lake Centennial committee chairperson Brenda Dale - WOW! Sylvan Lake’s major celebrations of 100 years as a municipality over the past two weeks were amazing. Steeped in family fun, the events brought the community together to experience the best party of the century — for this the many, many amazing volunteers of our community must be thanked profusely. Four years ago when planning first began to mark this milestone, we’re sure no one could have predicted the fantastic success of events like the Dance of the Century, the Parade of the Century and so much more. And embrace the visions that were created, our residents and visitors certainly did. The costumes worn leading up to the weekend and then during the parade and dance were astounding. Certainly a lot of work and ingenuity went into the search for or creation of the finery. Events over the past two weeks provided many opportunities to reflect on our history as a community, and for

Dear Editor, I would like the opportunity to express my personal sincere thank you to yourself and all the people on the Centennial committee. Steve, I cannot comprehend the hundreds of hours you and your staff put in to produce the “Centennial Edition”. This paper is so very well done, with facts and information of the forming of our beautiful hometown of Sylvan Lake. The names of our forefathers brought back many fond memories. I was fortunate, as a youngster, to know many of them, and such a fine group of people. They too would have been very pleased and proud of the Sylvan Lake News and of all of the members of the Centennial committee. You have carried

Memories will certainly last with several of the projects. The hundreds of hours put into creating history boards and the stories they tell will be a lasting reminder of our community’s many groups and organizations. A legacy art project which will eventually be displayed in our new town hall will be unveiled later this year. It’s the creation of a whole bunch of Grade 7 students working with an artist to create something they’ll be able to come back and look at for years to come. A quartet of themed quilts featuring the beach front of Sylvan Lake, created Sylvan Lake Quilters and spearheaded by Joyce Thrush, Chloe Lester and Gloria Armstrong, were presented to the town for hanging in the new town hall during the quilt show on the weekend. Musically, Sylvan Lake’s dance hall history was remembered, as the talents of our rising stars from École H. J. Cody High School contributed during the jubilee. There were so many other musicians who participated in dance, bringing to life each decade of the past century through their music. To Brenda Dale and her committee, our most profound thanks for the work you’ve done and the work still to be

done. And to everyone else, again we say “Wasn’t that a party?” Certainly a party worthy of a burgeoning community of 13,000 that has created memories for millions of people in its past. It’s interesting to note, however, that the party’s not over yet. We’re just beginning the summer season when we’ll be hosting hundreds of thousands of tourists. Our festivals — Shake The Lake action sports and music festival and Jazz At The Lake take place in August. Sports such as slo-pitch, baseball, volleyball, triathlon, sailing and more will attract people to our beautiful lakeside. Then there are more Centennial events planned. The community picnic early in September and then Sylvan Lake’s participation in Alberta Art and Culture Days at the end of the month. Fall events will lead into winter with the 2nd annual Sylvan Spirit of Yuletide Festival and to conclude the year, the Legion’s New Year’s Eve Dance. Surely there are so many more events than we’ve not mentioned. The bottom line though is our community is active and our volunteers are amazing in their dedication and in their enthusiasm to so many different events.

people to use their unique talents to contribute to the Steve Dills celebrations. Sylvan Lake News Whether it was the seniors drama troupe portraying events of the Women’s Institute which constructed a pier, or the informative performance of a large cast who led us through Sylvan Lake’s growth during the Centennial Jubilee June 8, we were impressed with the contributions of everyone involved. Then there was a chance to learn about over $22 million invested in redevelopment along Lakeshore Drive and in Centennial Park with rededication of Centennial Park last Wednesday. All these events built to the finale of a weekend that will not soon be forgotten. Again we must say a huge thank you to all the people who made things happen. To those with the vision and those who took on leadership roles to make things happen. To those who participated in the background. And of course to everyone who attended the events — without you our celebration would not have been infused with the enthusiasm and effervescence that so strongly contributed to the memories that were created.

on their tradition of volunteering. The Centennial committee, chaired by Brenda Dale, can be so proud of the 100th anniversary party. I cannot think of anything they could have done to improve on “the weekend of the century”. To the hundreds of other volunteers that were involved, stand proudly — without you people we would not have a Sylvan Lake. In the past century there have been so many changes. Some very good, some not so good. But the one thing that has remained constant for 100 years is the willingness of our volunteers. You are the lifeblood of our great town. Thank you, thank you, thank you. With deepest respect for everyone involved. ♦ ♦ ♦ Rain commenced falling Sunday evening and on Monday morning the gauge registered .54 inch. Feel free to come back for the light you dropped Dear Editor, Through your columns I’d like to address this to: Dear Thief - I fail to understand the need you seem to have for stealing things from people’s front yards. People put things in their yards not only for their own enjoyment but also for the enjoyment of others as well. We HAD a lighthouse in our front flower bed that is now gone. The light house was made for me by a friend, if you really wanted one, I would have been happy to have one made just for you! - Poplar Ridge student Landon Black (centre) tied for 11th in Canada during the recently administered Thales mathematics contest for Grade 3 students through Mathematica Centrum. 6,037 students wrote the test. Black also placed second in Alberta. Presenting him with a medal were teachers Janine Reed (left) and Wayne Phillips (right), while his mother Lynn Black stood behind him. Students were required to answer 30 questions in 45 minutes. Black scored 27 out of 30 on the test. Overall, Poplar Ridge tied for 32nd place in Canada. Phillips said many of the schools that placed higher were private schools or “Spirit of Math” schools which emphasize the subject. Poplar Ridge has been participating in the contest for about seven or eight years, but Phillips said this might be the last year because of the cost. Mathematica Centrum has developed a series of tests for various grades that are designed to challenge and promote the problem solving skills of students.

6 SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Thursday, June 20, 2013

Successful European trip raising Harper’s stature British Prime Minister Harold Wilson coined the phrase that even one week is a long time in politics. What the socialist leader meant was politicians can wake up on Monday and find they were top of the opinion polls, only to go to bed on Friday night and find the opinions polls had collapsed for them. This insight came back on reading about Stephen Harper’s immensely successful trip to Britain, followed by a high profile visit to France. In Britain, Harper had a private 30-minute session with Queen Elizabeth, who still holds great affection in the eyes of most Canadians. Then he became the only Canadian prime minister since William Lyon Mackenzie King to make a speech before the British Parliament, and King’s speech was made back in 1944 in the closing days of the Second World War. Harper’s speech to the British Parliament gave some required nods about how Westminister is the modern cradle of democracy, how Canada’s affinity with Britain

never wanes, but then a subtle slap at the USA for its reckless government spending, and a slap at Communist China for its authoritaristic nature. Some might say Harper’s speech was made up simply of nice platitudes, but this is a man who is a great monarchist and traditionalist, who put the ‘Royal’ back into the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force, and got rid of nonsenical art in Canadian embassies and replaced it with portraits of the Queen. After Britain, Harper was off to France for more favourable newsmaking, and then to the G-8 meeting in Ireland, fighting for Canadian issues and noting Canada now has the strongest economy in that group of countries. Just a week ago I would have said Harper’s political career was over because of the apparent scandals in the Senate — now I’m not so sure. Opinion polls can go upside, as well as downside. And a week ago Liberal leader Justin Trudeau was patting Senator Mac Harb on the back, saying Harb’s alleged spending was entirely different to that of C ons e r v at ive Open

Senators Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin. Now Trudeau has egg all over his face amid revelations suggesting Harb may have billed taxpayers for a whopping $230,000 for which he wasn’t entitled. Of course, none of these allegations have been proven in court, but mud tends to stick. Trudeau is also in hot water for earning a staggering $277,000 in speaking fees from non-profit outfits and charities. Also a week ago New Democrat leader Thomas Mulcair was hammering Harper with great pomposity over the Senate scandal — now it has been found he harassed an RCMP Security Officer on Parliament Hill after going through several stop signs, and when questioned by the officer said, “Don’t you know who I am?” That’s a statement one should never make to anyone in authority. So, if you are following my drift, the tables have been turned on both Trudeau and Mulcair, while Harper continues his successful

- A caption in our special Centennial section under the picture of Heenan’s Store contained some incorrect information which had previously appeared in the Sylvan Lake News’ 75th anniversary section, June 1988. According to information from Sylvan Lake & District Archives, William and Russell Heenan purchased the grocery store December 1, 1907 from Mr. Archambault. It was situated on Lakeshore Drive, west of Main Street and later became the Tourist Inn (not the Antler Lodge). The picture contains one lady and three men on the step in front of the store. The lady is unknown, the next person is Russell Heenan, then there’s an unknown man and on the right is Edmond Rosse. The sign above the door states it’s Archambault Bros. General Store. Incorrect information was that the property was “converted into a tea room and lodging house named Antler Lodge”. References in 1913 to 1915 issues of Red Deer News indicate Mr. Heenan operated the Lake Front Store during that period selling it to J. M. Meyers about January 1915. This was the location of the later Tourist Inn. An advertisement in the Sept. 18, 1912 edition stated Russell Heenan will open an “up-to-date billiard and pool hall in Sylvan Lake. “Latest style, fine tables and accommodation — the largest pool room in the ‘Far West’. One block south of Sylvan Lake Hotel.” This was his second business building. The building (also known as Heenan’s Opera House) was the meeting spot for nomination of councillors for election of the first council of the Village of Sylvan Lake. It was also the location of the first four council meetings at the southwest corner of 50A Avenue and 50th Street and is marked by a plaque on the side of the building. Also incorrect is the reference that when it was torn down to make way for Lakeland Plaza, the Antler Lodge’s LOT SALE stone fireplace was left FOR THE PURPOSE OF standing and shipped to SOCIAL CARE FACILITY a resort near Rocky 6FKRRO Mountain House. It was 6LWH Site 1 the Tourist Inn which WRU &ROOHF was torn down to make way for Lakeland Plaza. according to Hildebrand. At the same conference, Inspector Garrett Woolsey was quoted as stating there’s no evidence the shooting was ordered by the Hells Angels. “We have a theory and a motive behind the incident regarding an interpersonal relationship between the two accused and the victim.” The victim is also associated with the club. The rank and membership of the suspects and victim within the motorcycle club is still under investigation, according to the Herald story. Another attempted murder that occurred the same evening doesn’t appear to be linked although the two offences occurred in the same time period and same geographic area, according to Neely’s release. Andrew Waunch is facing numerous charges as a result of that offence. “Waunch has no known link to the Malicious Crew, but is an associate of Huddlestone’s,” Neely said.

Attempted murder charges have been laid against two motorcycle gang members following a shooting near Sylvan Lake on June 3. RCMP continue to investigate after an adult man was located walking in an area near the community suffering from gun shot wounds. Rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery, the man is expected to survive. Daniel Huddlestone, 34, and Cameron Monkman, 28, were identified as suspects by Sylvan Lake RCMP with assistance of the RCMP Serious Crimes Branch, dog, forensic identification and other units. Both are associated with the Malicious Crew Motorcycle Club which RCMP identify as a support club for the Hells Angels. They have been charged with attempted murder using a firearm, robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault, possession of a restricted weapon and other weapons related offences. Talents of Cody’s musicians showcased at year-end concert by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

A delightful display of the talents of École H. J. Cody High School’s music students was performed at Red Deer College Mainstage last Wednesday evening as the school year wraps up. The evening was a celebration of a “huge year” said director Kerry Heisler. Students performed in the musical production Once Upon a Mattress and 67 band and choir members spent six days at Disneyland learning and performing. Heisler said the choir was “highly complimented by the clinician” there for being the fastest choir to be ready to record in her 16 years of doing workshops. Video selections of the students’ performances were shown during the concert. One of the messages from their workshops, said Heisler, was “be in focus”. She also noted the musicians form a huge family at the school. Most of them performed at the town’s Centennial Jubilee celebration at the multiplex, June 8 where they sang and played many of the same songs as during their final concert. Among the highlights were Grade 11 student Alex Palm directing his piece ‘Belong’ which he rearranged for concert band and Sheldon Walker who played an original song he’d written on his guitar. During the evening, Heisler presented awards in the categories of most improved, excellence in

music, and musical citizenship. Following are the recipients. Choir Grade 9: most improved - Amy Seifert, excellence - Lauren Rowe, citizenship - Ceanna Muller. Grade 10: most improved - Marie Geake, excellence - Brianne Hughes, citizenship - Hannah Shaxted. Grade 11: most improved - Layne Zazalak, excellence - Breanna Allen, citizenship - T. J. Sloboda. Warkentin Choral Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the H. J. Cody Choir through leadership and personal commitment to excellence in vocal performance - Sheldon Walker and Bennett Hreherchuk. Band Grade 9: most improved (Boudreau Music Award) - Keenan Degenhardt, excellence - Nathan Sloboda, citizenship - Ceanna Muller. Grade 10 - most improved - Derek Penman, excellence - Brianne Hughes, citizenship - Breanna Tait. Grade 11 - most improved - Ethan Johnson and Jacqueline Starcheski, excellence - Alex Palm, citizenship - T. J. Sloboda. Band 212˚ Spirit Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the H. J. Cody Band through love and appreciation of music, effort and reliability, courtesy and respect towards others and willingness to go the extra mile - Shaye Lyons. Students voted for the winner of this award. Six Grade 11 and 12 students were nominated. “Our passion is His presence, Our commitment is His will, Our pursuit is His way.”

NOTICE: IMPORTANT CHANGES TO GARBAGE COLLECTION ARE COMING!

What changes? The town will be switching to automated garbage collection. What this means is that the new garbage truck will reach and lift the container into the truck with little physical effort from the operator. Existing residents will be supplied a new, large garbage receptacle at no charge which is capable of holding at least 3 regular garbage bags. Why? The new automated method of collecting is efficient, reduces litter, and greatly reduces the risk of injury to our staff. When? The program is expected to be launched in late summer or early winter of 2013. Will my collection day change? Due to the growth of the town, some residents will see their garbage collection day change. Does this change affect green box or yard/kitchen waste collection? No, your recyclables and yard/kitchen waste will continue to be collected as is. Green box containers are supplied by the town while yard/kitchen waste containers, or biodegradable bags, are supplied by the residents. How do I find out more information? The details of the program will be introduced to residents throughout the summer, or contact the Public Works Department at 403-887-2800.

Parade an exciting spectacle with 71 entries by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Wasn’t that a parade — all those floats, all those bands, all those horses. And the people, walking and riding, waving and cheering. Crowds lined the streets and children waited patiently for candy which was handed out along the route. We’d conservatively estimate several thousand people saw the 45 minute long parade. And Mother Nature co-operated by holding off the rain with just a few light drops as the fire trucks at the end of the parade neared Lakeshore Drive. Sylvan Lake certainly presented a fantastic display for our Centennial celebration of 1913 Days. There were 71 entries. Roy Mattson proudly held the winner’s ribbon after the Mattson Family Winners in the Centennial parade Farm float won fist place in the best Centennial theme-family category. were (in first to third order): Adult community organization Sylvan Lake Seniors Association, Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce and Sylvan Spirit of Yuletide Festival/Arrow Excavating. Rainy weather held off as Sylvan Lake hosted what was the biggest parade in recent times with 71 entries. It took about 45 minutes to pass the thousands of people who lined streets along the route.

Sparky the fire dog got a little talking to after he approached RCMP officers Cst. Mike Lee and Cpl. Kevin Halwa from behind. He then fell into step and marched with the duo for half a block near the fire hall.

Long time residents, Shirley Mannix (arrived in 1954), Shirley Pickering (1942), Rev. John Yoos (1956) rode in a buggy with Dale Mannix (1942) driving. The quartet have lived in town for a total of 258 years. Their entry won third in the best Centennial theme-family category.

A 1946 General Motors COE truck owned by Greg Garson of Sylvan Lake won first place in the best antique vehicle category.

Sylvan Lake’s new float participated in its first parade and won top spot in the municipality float category. The float was created by local artist Shane Seib. STEVE DILLS

Town’s new parade float put in its first appearance by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake’s new float was fittingly unveiled during the Centennial parade Saturday. It was created by local artist Shane Seib, who said he was honoured but skeptical and unsure what to create to represent the community. Sails depict the lake lifestyle, said information from Seib, circulated by the town’s Beach Ambassadors during the parade. “As part of the ‘all seasons’ environment, I included the Christmas tree that the town is so well known for throughout the winter

months.” “Two larger than life characters represent how inviting Sylvan Lake is to both residents and guests. Again, to represent a “town of all seasons”, these characters are busy skating and playing beach volleyball. “Finally — the beacon of Sylvan Lake — the lighthouse. I realize its current absence on the lake; however, with the promise to once again watch over our waters, I knew I needed to include it. The future design of the new lighthouse is still up for debate, so I created one that still leaves room to the imagination and still represents the concept. “After coming up with most designs and bringing them to life, I was unconvinced that the float looked complete,” wrote Seib. “It needed just one more … something. Ah yes, a rusty anchor and chain to finish it all off!”

Gathered - Past and current members of Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment posed for a picture during the Regimental Ball, May 25. They included, in the back row, Shane Mills, Mike Lee, Mike Arnason, Erik Lieng, Rod Johnson, Chad Palmer, James Allemekinders, Keith Sanford, Scott Smith, Dean Ludwig, Kyle Smetlzer, Jay Peden, Chris Matechuk and Marty Reed; in the middle row, Geoff Buxcey, Marrla Boxall, Nelson Johnson, Tim Gilbert, Sabrina Caterini, Michelle Boutin, Bob Schultz, Gary Rhodes and Kathryn Robertson; and in the front row, Kevin Halwa, Marlene Schmitte and Ernie Horne. Dreeshen’s ‘personating’ bill unanimously passed by MPs by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

It’s been a long haul for MP Earl Dreeshen, but last Friday his private members bill passed in the House of Commons with unanimous consent. It’s now on to the Senate for the remainder of its legislative process. “This bill is about sentencing,” Dreeshen said in wrapping up debate on Bill C-444, an

Act to Amend the Criminal Code (personating a peace officer or public officer), Friday afternoon. “It speaks to the need for tougher penalties for personating peace officers and public officers … “We must preserve the trust and respect that citizens have for police officers. When citizens see a police uniform, they trust the authority that comes with it. We are giving the tools that they need to deliver harsher sentences to criminals who breach this trust to cause harm.”

In a news release later that day, Dreeshen said, “I am pleased to see this bill pass in the House of Commons after three years of pursuing this amendment to the Criminal Code. I have received tremendous support from my colleagues in all parties and am grateful for their contributions to this debate.” Dreeshen first introduced the amendment during the 40th Parliament and then had to reintroduce it in the current 41st Parliament. The purpose of the act is to establish that personating a peace officer or public officer

Well known business people victims of firearms offence by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Further details have been released by RCMP about a crime spree which involved an attempted murder in the Sylvan Lake area. They were called to a residence outside Sylvan Lake about 10 p.m. June 3 for an offence involving firearms. On arrival, police learned an adult male and an adult female visited a residence stating they would seriously injure the victim and his spouse if they weren’t given money and jewellery. The assailant was carrying a firearm, and at one time, allegedly fired the weapon at the male victim. “The weapon did not discharge, and no other attempts were made to discharge it again,” reported RCMP Sgt. Patricia Neely, in a media release. “Money and property were taken from the residence by the two perpetrators … The victims are well known business people with no known ties to any criminal activities.”

Andrew Waunch and Ashley Chambers were identified by police as the alleged perpetrators. Both are facing numerous charges for this and other offences committed in the following days. Waunch was arrested by Red Deer RCMP on June 10 after a pursuit in which shots were alleged to have been fired. He is subject of a 37 count information which is currently before the courts. He is currently facing a variety of charges including attempted murder, robbery with a firearm, break and enter into a residence and commit robbery, unlawful confinement and point firearm pertaining to incidents which occurred on June 3, as well as charges stemming from incidents on June 7, 8, 9 and 10, including offences relating to taking of a motor vehicle by menace and use of a firearm, break and enter into a residence, robbery, flight from police, dangerous driving, and multiple other related charges. Chambers turned herself in to Airdrie RCMP detachment on Sunday.

to commit another offence shall be considered by a court to be an aggravating circumstance which would allow judges to impose longer sentences. “I am confident that this bill will better support victims of this crime. Harsher sentencing should ensure victims that there will be severe consequences for those who harm them,” said Dreeshen. He hopes to see the bill progress through the Senate this fall.

Car wash planned as first youth job creation project by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

A summer car wash is the first ‘job creation project’ being organized by the town’s Youth Employment Office. It will take place Friday, July 5th from 11:30-3:30 p.m. in the community centre’s newly paved parking lot. “We believe that youth are a valuable asset to Sylvan Lake and the business community and we want to ensure that any employment opportunity is made

available to them,” said Krista Carlson, youth services coordinator. The projects are being organized so “youth with little to no job experience can participate in events and activities that will give them the opportunity to gain skills and earn some income over the summer”. Young people who would like to get involved are asked to go to the Youth Employment Office on the main floor in the community centre to fill out a registration form and sign up to be part of the event.

Cody students grew in many ways at Disneyland; presented best of themselves by Kerry Heisler Special to Sylvan Lake News

The École H.J. Cody High School Band and Choir performed in Disneyland. We travelled 85 strong with students and chaperones for a six day tour leaving May 15 and returning May 20.

In the course of six days there were several firsts for many of the students. For some it was the first time out of Canada, first plane ride, first rollercoaster, first recording, first musical attended, first visit to Disneyland. The most prominent first was travelling without family. Everyone participated in two workshops in addition

to the playing commitment. Students had to be in certain places at certain times. Everyone fulfilled their 212° commitment. Musically, students grew to a new place of understanding how music is affected by emotions and how it brings out emotions in others. As band members, students learned to breathe together and listen to one another. Students were challenged to become leaders and be present in every moment, every situation. Always make the first time count. “If you don’t get it right the first time, when will you have time to do it again?” A poignant comment was, “Musically, I learned that music sets the tone for everything.” “I learned that if you doubt yourself, it will spread the doubt when playing.” “I can do anything if I try hard enough.” “Don’t panic.” “Fix your mistakes quickly.” “You are only as good as your relationship with the other instruments.” “Putting yourself out there really does

brighten things up.” Students shared what they learned personally about perseverance, living in the moment, tolerance, patience, enjoy every moment, self-control, stepping out of the comfort zone. Classmates learned to depend on one another and love life to the fullest. The art of give and take is valued and it is okay to make mistakes. Teamwork is at the top of the list for many students. A very personal comment was, “I learned I could push through my fears and try new things.” “No matter what, we are all in this together and are there for each other.” “I learned how music makes everything beautiful.” We often paint kids with the wrong brush. We witnessed students grow in ways that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Your kids represented your family, their school and our town with the best of themselves in every way. We can all be proud and thankful to have them in our lives.

Some students played on up to five different teams. “Today is not only about celebrating our athletes but all the accomplishments you have helped create,” MC Jason Chatwood said. “Whether you were playing in a game, managing, training, driving students to games, cheering from the stands, scorekeeping or volunteering your time we need the effort of everyone in this room in order for athletics to be successful at HJ.” Named athletes of the year were Erika Marshall (Grade 9 female), Calob Adams (Grade 9 male), Alex Donaghy (high school female) and Tyler Ledwos (high school male). Both Donaghy and Ledwos received the same honours last year. Donaghy plans to attend Red Deer College in the fall and play on the Queens volleyball team. Ledwos will be continuing his football career at the University of Calgary. Their names will be added to a pair of banners which were sponsored last year by H. J. Cody High School Athletic Society and will hang proudly in the school. This organization fundraises to reduce fees for athletes participating in various sports and buys uniforms and equipment for the teams. Bingos, casinos and raffles have been the means of raising most of the money. The society was started in 2001. The first awards presented were the Academic Athletic Excellence Awards. Jeremy Braitenback said the ‘Super Lakers’ are students who maintain an 80 per cent average while competing in extra curricular activities. Fifteen Grade 9 students were recognized, 13 Grade 10 students, six Grade 11 students and nine Grade 12 students. Grade 9: Chase Allan, Jessica Beckwith, Devyn Blondheim, Bobbi Cerin, Gallen Donaghy, Emma Dunsmore, Kassidy Glasgow, Zach Kostiuk, Erika Marshall, Kassidy Mason, Meghan Meier, Ceanna Muller, Jensen Peck, Madison Prelle and Jesse Stormoen.

Midway through the awards ceremony several students participated in a basketball dunk competition. A video, created by Sarah Steinbach, which captured students during classes and extra-curricular activities, was screened and appreciated by the audience. Following the awards presentation all the coaches were thanked for their time and involvement in school sports. The athletic society put on a barbecue for athletes, parents and staff before the awards ceremony. School teams had a very successful year, said Chatwood preceding award presentations. “We had a Grade 9 boys volleyball team for the first time in years and after a slow start came on strong to get silver at the CWAJHAA tournament.” The senior girls volleyball team finished first overall in the CASA league and were two points shy of winning zones and moving on to provincials, but should be extremely proud of their silver medal. They defeated Olds to claim the CENAA banner. The archery club continued to expand and participated in the provincial NASP competition in Edmonton. Grade 9 girls basketball team won bronze at the CWAJHAA tourney. Grade 9 boys basketball team beat Lindsay Thurber to win the Olds junior high tournament and got silver at CWAJHAA’s. Both girls and boys senior basketball teams won the Chinook’s Edge challenge banner. Senior and junior badminton teams won a number of medals. Carson Walker and Jaxon Lynn won silver at the area tournament and competed at zones. Braden Bystrom and Tyler Steenbergen won gold at CENAA and were fourth at CWAJHAA’s. Two athletes competed at the provincial track and field championships in Calgary. Aden Smaill got seventh in intermediate triple jump and Josh Bawtinheimer got 11th in junior high jump. Boys soccer team was B side champs after a hard fought victory over Lindsay Thurber that was decided in a shootout. Four members of Sylvan Lake Nauticals swim team travelled to Medicine Hat to compete, June 8-9. This was a very exciting meet as the four girls — Lexi Sparrow (14), Elizabeth Moore (12), Amber Carson (14) and Ann Duffy (14) — broke two all time club relay records. They crushed the previous club relay records by 10 or more seconds. The girls placed second in the 4x50m medley relay (a combination of all four stokes) and third in the 4x50m freestyle relay. What exciting races! Way to go girls! Lexi Sparrow (14) had a really good weekend earning seven personal best times and making it into two finals. Lexi placed eighth in 50m backstroke and sixth in 200m freestyle. Elizabeth Moore (12) was in seven races and she earned a spot in seven finals ending with five firsts and two seconds. Elizabeth got five personal best times and broke five club records, taking over 14 seconds off in 200m backstroke. Amber Carson (14) swam in seven races as well and qualified for seven finals. Amber took two more club records off the board and got five personal best times. Amber placed first in 100m fly and second in 50m backstroke. Ann Duffy (14) made four out of seven finals. Ann placed fourth in 50m backstroke, fifth in 100m and 200m backstroke and sixth in 400m freestyle. Overall Ann got three personal best times.

Beautiful family home in Eckville on the banks of the medicine river. This property is zoned Residential Light Industrial, so it’s permitted to run a business from your home. Owners have been approved for a 30x50 shop with 14’ doors, and permit is still in place for next owners. The home itself has 4 bedrooms (all with walk-in closets) and 3 baths. Laminate Àooring throughout the top Àoor. Kitchen has had a major renovation with very contemporary maple cabinets with espresso stain. (All stainless appliances are included). Glass mosaic tile backsplash in kitchen and baths complete this look. Every room has been painted in contemporary soft colors and the main Àoor laundry is a

bonus as well as an indoor sauna. Shingles were all replaced last year. Central air conditioning and underÀoor heat in the garage make this home comfortable all year long. The backyard has had a lifetime warranty vinyl privacy fence, with gates to get in from the front yard and down to the river with ATV’s. The yard has been landscaped and looks like a park, with nature being abundant. The massive deck on the top Àoor leads down to a concrete patio which is covered, making it perfect for barbecuing or having a hot tub all winter long. This property is like living in the country, with all the amenities of small town living. There is lots of room to park your R.V and all the ATV’s you have.
