Sam Redding

Omineca Express The Health Care Traveling Roadshow was in Vanderhoof Wednesday and Thursday last week, they came to show young students what it’s like to be in the health care industry. The roadshow was set up at the Evelyn Dickson elementary school on Thursday, providing elementary kids with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of health care related careers. The purpose of the roadshow is two-fold, first to show the eleA student taking a look down mentary students all their options the throat of one of the models. and second, to show the health care students what it’s like in a rural area. “There are six stations, the kids are exposed to a lot of hands-on activities and then take this information into high school,” said Darren Carpenter, the district career and trades programs coordinator. “We hope to do it again and turn it into an annual event, we’re very excited because we can partner with them and we’re very interested in getting them to come back.” The reason Vanderhoof should be so excited to host the roadshow again is because the people showing the demonstrations to the kids are health care students who may be looking to settle in just such a place. “The primary goal is plant seeds in school-age kids and to give them an idea that there’s a bunch of different health care careers, give them a tactile experience,” said Dr. Sean Maurice, an instructor at UNBC and organizer for the roadshow. “One of the other pieces is there’s sort of a recruiting angle, so the city has a chance to showcase rural living and rural practice.” The health care students went on a tour of St. John Hospital, which gave them a chance to see what resources are available at a rural hospital and show them things they don’t learn in school. The health care students ranged in fields from nursing to occupational therapist, from medical radiology technologist (x-ray technician) to physiotherapist. They all had presentations where the kids got to play with tools from their profession and learn just why medical Homes to each be used instudent our loves their field. “I think it went very well,” said Gerry Thiessen, mayor of Vanderhoof. new about Advertising Program. “We’re really very excited this.” Continued on page 2

Health Care Roadshow From front The day before the presentations at the school all the medical students were taken to a dinner in the park and shown the beauty of the Vanderhoof community. “We had a good contingent of local government leaders from both council and the regional district, as well as doctors from the hospital,” said Thiessen. “As well, one of our local contractors came out with his jet boat and gave a tour of the Nechako River. So they got a good chance to see that.”

Knelsen was not planning on killing anyone that night, according to defence lawyer Peter Firestone, he was perhaps trying to rekindle an affair with homeowner Shannon Henson. The murder charge was brought down from first to second degree after Joseph Knelsen pleaded guilty last week.

Hay to China Entrepreneur Judd Wu moved from China to launch Top Hay Agri Industries in Vanderhoof. He will be growing hay in this fertile region and shipping it back to China to feed their annual demand of 100 million tonnes. Wu will compress the hay bales to a fraction of their original size and hopes to eventually increase daily hay production to 150 million tonnes. MLA John Rustad says that shipping from Prince Rupert will help prevent gluts on local markets and boost the economy in the Nechako Valley and strengthen Canada’s bond with China.

Breaking down the recycling process Sam Redding Omineca Express The Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative would like to thank Vanderhoof for its dedication to recycling and reducing waste. The NWRI is dedicated to increasing Vanderhoof citizens’ ability to recycle materials, they have steadily increased the range of items that they recycle and work to establish recycling centres and receptacles in the region. Now, Vince Terstappen, sustainability coordinator for the NWRI, is trying to push the next step after recycling, reducing. He wants people to ask themselves “if you need that paper in the first place or do you really need those plastic bags?” He would also like to say that the recycling processors are quite happy with the materials they get from Vanderhoof. “We’ve heard from the folks that process the recycling and they’re very appreciative of the sorting that happens here and they speak very highly about how clean and non-contaminated our recycling is.” He wanted to clear up any confusion or misinformation that people might have “sometimes folks could be thinking, ‘why am I going through all this trouble sorting and recycling?’” Because it makes everyone’s job easier and makes it easier to process more recyclables. Terstappen also wanted to let people know what exactly happens to their stuff when they recycle it. First, a separate company picks up the recycled material, whenever one of the three bins are full, and takes it to Prince George. There, they make sure none of the bins are contaminated, making sure that nothing besides recyclable plastic is in the plastic bin. After that, it’s baled up and shipped straight to a port in Vancouver where it can be taken to several end markets, none of which are in Canada. These end markets include locations in China and southeast Asia. “There’s a couple spots in the United

Recycling containers at the Vanderhoof dump. States but no domestic mills in Canada,” said Terstappen. In terms of quantity, Vanderhoof produces per month: 1.5 tons of plastics, of which Vanderhoof collects every type; over 4 tons of paper; and 6 tons of cardboard, which is so high due to the Co-op filling the collection bin behind their store. The breakdown of Vanderhoof’s garbage, according to a 2008 study conducted by the

Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, is as follows. By weight: - 36% is organic waste (which can, in theory, be composted) - 24% is paper (which can be recycled) - 12% is plastic (which can be recycled) - 3% is household metal (which can be recycled) - 25% is other materials, including wood waste, pet waste, composite materials, and

construction/demolition materials. “According to this waste audit, 75% of what we are putting into our garbage cans could be diverted out of the landfill through recycling and composting,” said Terstappen. The NWRI, as part of its green initiatives, will be holding a Green Event to highlight local food and waste reduction options on Canada Day at the museum.

School District No 91 Business Company (SD91BC) organizing for Summer Camps in July and August Home Stay Families are needed for 5 days spent in local communities This summer SD91BC is arranging several summer camps in conjunction with schools in Fraser Lake, Fort St. James, Burns Lake and Vanderhoof. The success of the previously hosted 2012 Summer and 2013 Winter camps has resulted in growing interest from students and teachers from various schools in China, most of whom are associated with Sister Schools to FLESS, FSJSS, LDSS and NVSS. “We have been very pleased with the response and are happy to be able to coordinate these events and have our guests spend time in the four largest communities of the Nechako Lakes District,” said Ray LeMoigne – President of the independently operated SD No 91 Business Company. “We are now working with the four schools to host 85 – 95 students, teachers and parents during the five days and nights that are spent in our communities. Students also will stay at the UNBC residence for two nights, camp for two nights in the “Rockies”, spend a full day travelling to Vancouver via charter bus and end with visits to Victoria as well as several Lower Mainland venues while staying at UBC during the last nights of their 14 day experience in BC.” The visiting Chinese students and sponsoring teachers will be working on building their English language fluency while experiencing our Canadian culture, lifestyle, geography, education system and some history. Each camp will be facilitated by qualified ESL instructors / camp leaders and relevant activity specialists, with local high school student ambassador / leaders also gaining valuable experience through their involvement in all of the camp activities both here and in the lower mainland. Families who may be interested in hosting two students for the five days spent in the district are urgently needed. Student guests are organized in pairs to stay with host families and each student must have their own bed. Teachers can be hosted individually or in pairs. Camp participants are usually in the home for breakfast each morning and for dinner on three of the five nights of their home stay experience. They will spend one “Family Day” entirely with the host family. As is the case with any activities involving students, criminal record checks are required, in this case of the home stay parent. Each secondary school will be holding an orientation and information session for those interested in being a home stay family to be held at the school during the week of June 24th. Check your school’s newsletter for specific information as to the date and time in your community. The dates for hosting within each camp are: Fraser Lake - July 25 – 29 (ages 9 – 12 plus 5 adults); Burns Lake, Fort St. James and Vanderhoof – August 16 – 20 (ages 13 – 16 plus adults). If you are interested in hosting please leave your name and number for the Principal at your local high school or email your contact information to rlemoigne@sd91.bc.ca.

Mount Milligan’s Mine Rescue Team (MRT) competed at their first MRT zone championships in June. The team was complemented on their professionalism and how well they worked together to complete first aid, fire safety, and injury rescue challenges.

Mount Milligan wins prestigious safety award June 2013 – The BC Ministry of Energy and Mines recognized Mount Milligan’s impressive safety record at the 51st Annual Mine Safety Awards banquet, awarding Mount Milligan the John Ash Award. This award is presented each year to the BC mine accumulating over one million worker hours with the lowest injury-frequency rate in the previous calendar year. “We are very proud of the accomplishment of our employees, contractors and site service providers,” says Dennis Hoof, vice president and general manager, Mount Milligan. “Nothing is more important than sending everyone home safely. To have accumulated more than five million hours without a lost time injury is an impressive accomplishment. Especially as this milestone was achieved while we are still in construction when there are a unique set of risks due to the

wide variety of activities and contract workers onsite.” The mine safety awards was presented in Revelstoke, host town for this year’s mine rescue team competition. British Columbia’s mining laws require that trained mine rescue personnel and mine rescue equipment be at the ready at all mines. Once basic skills are learned, hours of training and practice are needed to ensure teams work well together in the event of an emergency. The Mount Milligan Mine Rescue Team (MRT) has been training together for the past year and competed for the first time in the zone event. To learn more about Mount Milligan, members of the public are invited to join one of the summer tours to site. The tours will begin July 8 and will depart from Mackenzie one week and from Fort St James the next. Tours continue until September 23. Tours leave

from our community offices with transport and lunch included. The July 8 tour will leave from Mackenzie, and tours will then alternate between Fort St James and Mackenzie, providing five tours from each community this summer. To register for a tour spot, please call our local office in Mackenzie (250997-8800) or Fort St James (250-996-0066). To allow as many people as possible to participate, there is a limit of one tour per person. Mount Milligan is an open pit copper gold mine, scheduled to start up in the third quarter of this year. Located between Fort St James and Mackenzie, Mount Milligan will be a conventional, truck shovel, open pit mine designed to produce an average of 81 million pounds of copper and 194,500 ounces of gold annually over a projected 22-year life. Air quality in Vanderhoof worst in BC Vanderhoof has the worst air in B.C., out of any community, according to the B.C. Lung Association. The B.C. Lung Association released a report June 5 that stated Vanderhoof has 10.9 micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic metre. According to Dr. Menn Biagtan, these levels are dangerous. “There are groups of people that are very highly susceptible to the impacts,” said Dr. Biagtan, B.C. Lung Association program manager. “The young children, the elderly, those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions…” The provincial objective is an annual average of 8.0 micrograms and even that can be deadly according to Biagtan. “The lower the number the better, there is no safe number,” she said. “Even 8.0 doesn’t guarantee it won’t have any health impacts.” The culprits are vehicle emissions and biomass burning, most of the latter can be attributed to wood stoves. Even Vanderhoof’s topography may be at fault, the fact that it resides in a valley keeps a lot of toxins in the region. “Something like terrain, there’s nothing that you can do, but something that is man-made… for example in winter time the

reading is very high because of the heating season and most people are using wood stoves.” There is a wood stove exchange program said Biagtan, and a lot of educational resources to avoid giving off so much emissions. Other options are of course, cycling to work or using some form of public transportation, an option not available in Vanderhoof. In Prince George, the level of fine particulate in the air reached 6.1 micrograms per cubic metre last year, while Kitimat had the lowest at 2.2. Vanderhoof is one of the community’s that has a newer air monitor in place but even so, Biagtan said, the results are just too high for Vanderhoof to ignore. “Officials need to do something about it,” she added, and they are. Vanderhoof Mayor Gerry Thiessen spoke at council on this issue and it was decided that the ministry of environment should be invited to speak at council and explain what can be done. “We’ve also made an invitation to the ministry of health,” said Thiessen. “We want to address it methodically and very quickly… If it’s dust control then we’ll look at that, if it’s other things

then we’re gonna look at that.” Thiessen addressed possible transit fixes to the pollution, a fix that Dr. Biagtan suggested but one that doesn’t really work in a small town like Vanderhoof. “We have done a transit study in the past and at that time it didn’t seem economically viable and I think that now for a number of reasons we’re dusting off that transit study again with BC Transit and trying to find some sort of opportunity.”

Mount Milligan mine to receive safety award Sam Redding Omineca Express Mt. Milligan, a copper-gold mine midway between Fort St. James and Mackenzie, will receive an annual provincial mine safety award. The Minister of Energy and Mines, Bill Bennett, announced the awards at the 51st annual Mine Safety Awards banquet in Revelstoke. The mine is one of 19 operations that won awards for having the lowest injury frequency rates. “B.C.’s mining industry is experiencing unprecedented growth,” said Bennett in a media release. “With new operations and workers in the field, our government is working hard to protect mine workers through high safety standards and regular training and audits. These awards recognize those companies who have achieved the highest safety records.” Mt. Milligan is under increased pressure since it is under construction but not producing ore therefore it has risks from the contract workers on site and all the activity happening at once. Mt. Milligan achieved the lowest injury rate for a mine with over one million worker hours. “It’s the daily dedication of all the participants in the mining industry - the workers, the unions, the companies - that makes mining the safest heavy industry in B.C.,” said Karina Brino, CEO of Mining

Thanks Vanderhoof, for helping Ryleigh! Dear Editor, Three years ago my daughter, Ryleigh, was diagnosed with an irritable bowel disease called Crohn’s Disease. Crohn’s disease is a life long illness that does not have a cure. Ryleigh endures pain and horrible digestive symptoms that resulted in severe weight loss, anemia, fatigue, and being homebound while trying all medication options. In January, Ryleligh was admitted to St. John Hospital. We are grateful to Dr. Dhillon for his care and kindness in getting Ryleigh the help she needed. We are also thankful towards hospital staff, nurses, and the ambulance and air ambulance services in Vanderhoof. She was sent to BC Children’s hospital to receive specialized care. Ryleigh spent almost 100 days in BC Children’s hospital – enduring painful procedures, a brain lesion, blood clot, and two surgeries. She ended up having her entire colon removed. Currently, Ryleigh is back in Vanderhoof, slowly recovering and learning how to live with an ileostomy and other symptoms from Crohn’s disease. The past six months have been challenging for our family. The finanicial burden of extra expenses that comes from living away from home and taking care of a sick family member are overwhelming. I am so thankful and grateful to the community of Vanderhoof. Many groups and organizations, businesses, families, SD 91 staff, parents and students, and individuals participated in the numerous fundraising activities to help my family deal with some of the financial needs we had while living at BC Children’s Hospital and Easter Seal House. I was able to focus on being a parent and advocating for my daughter’s care. I did not worry as much about how I was going to afford to live down south while still paying for my regular bills at home. The positive messages, comments, and support gave us the true gift of kindness and caring which allows us all to recover from a difficult time. I am proud to say that I live in Vanderhoof! Thank you so much to this amazing community!

Book Review: Home to the Nechako by author June Wood Sam Redding Omineca Express Local Vanderhoof author June Wood recently wrote her second book describing the Nechako River. The book covers the construction of the Kenney Dam and the controversial Kemano Completion Project and the reactions of the locals. Since I am not a local to the area of Vanderhoof, I grew up in the Okanagan Valley, this book introduced me to the rich history of this region. I found out about the terrible tragedy of the Ta-cullies and the battle with Alcan for the rivers. Wood’s first book was more about her father and the land while this is more of a story of locals against the government, Natives against the corporations, an underdog story filled with tragedy. The book narrates the period when Alcan took advantage of the Aboriginals and forged treaties and even flooded graveyards. It chronicles the history of a once mighty river, the Nechako. “The fact that the Nechako White sturgeon is on the endangered species list and on the very brink of extinction is a clear indication that the Nechako river is not a healthy functioning river,” said June Wood in an interview. Wood describes the book as written for the people. “A tribute to the people who fought for the river,” she said. “There were so many people involved in the fight to save the Nechako, and in the end, after the hearings, the Kemano II was completed and we didn’t gain any water for the river. But we didn’t lose any either, so I guess we won.” From the foreword by local Craig Hooper, a reader can see that this will be a tale of heartache and hard work. “I have also seen Cheslatta elders who from a distance looked as if they were picking wildflowers along the shore but instead were gathering the bones of their loved ones from the sand and, eyes filled with tears, placing them in a black body bag held by an RCMP officer,” reads the prologue. While it does provide an excellent history lesson on the region, the book tends to get bogged down in details. About a third of the book contains so many names of rivers, lands, and peoples that it’s hard for me to keep track of what is actually being discussed.

Although I’m sure a local could see all the place names and instantly know what’s going on. From the amount of information, one understands that a lot of research went into writing this history. “I kept a lot of data that we collected over the years, I had a lot of it here at my fingertips, it was just a matter of going through it,” said Wood. “But I did also interview people and gather information from other sources.” “Everyone was really helpful” she said. “I had a lot of help along the way.” Some of the best parts of the book are the personal episodes that she has written in. At one point, Wood describes how her sister and herself splashed in the waters of the once mighty river with fish lying gasping in the warm puddles. But Wood told me that the publishers wanted her to pull more of the personal things out. “I also tried to write just the facts and get the information out. I tried to keep my own acerbic comments out,” she said while laughing. Wood found it a little difficult publishing her first book but by the second she understood the process and was more patient with the publishers and editors, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t put her foot down in some areas. The publishers didn’t think that writing about the pine beetle epidemic and the Nechako River in the same book would work. But it did, the story plays out in June Wood’s life and the beetle epidemic is a story that needed to be told she said. “I stuck to my guns and it’s all in one book for better or worse… you really can’t separate the river from the land because what happens on the land affects the river, there’s a strong connection there and I don’t know if I got that across well enough in my book.” My favourite parts were when Wood includes songs and poems from the era, including “Return” by Pat Harrison Roach. In these poems we can hear the sorrowful voices of the farmers and regular people who loved their homes. I asked Wood if there was one thing she would like for readers to take away from the book. “That we paid a heavy price,” she said. “That the river and the valley paid a heavy price for that dam and for the smelter in Kitimat. “A lot people in Vanderhoof weren’t around when this happened, they see the river as it is now and they accept that this is the Nechako River. They have no idea what the river was and what it could be.”

Importance of prostrate health With Fathers days we are reminded about those men that are important in our lives, so this week we are reminding men about what should be important for them; the prostate. The prostate is part of a man’s sex organ, a small gland about the size of a walnut that surrounds the urethra. The gland grows quite a bit during puberty and then remains unchanged for most until about age 40 where it begins to slowly grow once more, in many men, it doesn’t stop. Most are not bothered by this, but some will develop prostate troubles such as: Enlarged prostate: (or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia BPH) can be common in older men though many will experience related symptoms such as: frequent urination, incomplete emptying of bladder, weak or difficulty in starting urination Prostate cancer: causes pain, and discomfort but may not be readily felt until it required drastic measures, so it’s important to get your prostate checked at your physical, especially once you are above the 50 yr old mark. Prostatitis: an inflammation commonly due to infection, about 50% of men in their lifetime are treated for this! This condition can cause discomfort, blood in urine, frequent urination and even a low sperm count. What increases your risk? recent bladder infections, having BHP, sexually transmitted disease, frequent unprotected sex with multiple partners, excessive alcohol consumption, loads of spicy food in the diet or injury to the lower pelvis. So taking care of yourself is important, here are a few ways to do just that, as well as a few ideas to let dad know you care. A diet high in fiber and low in fat and red meats have been shown to decrease cancer risk. Eat plenty of veggies, fish, vitamin E, whole grains, lycopene (cooked tomatoes) soy, and be sure to drink plenty of good water. It wouldn’t hurt to take a strong antioxidant such as protandim. Reducing caffeine and increase water intake are recommended! In short, we hear that a healthy lifestyle can decrease or limit our risks of developing many diseases and disorders. When it comes to the prostate be sure to get it checked out, but also not to ignore any symptoms such as you’ve read, it is easier to deal with a situation before it becomes full blown or chronic. For some great help for men health check out http://www.menshealthnetwork.org/

Charlie Borek, grade eight, won a gold medal in the 2000 metre run and two silver medals in the 300 metre and 1200 metre run. Emma Floris, grade nine, won three gold medals: in the 100 metre, long jump, and 200 metre. Alexander Nemethy, grade 10, won two gold medals in the 3000m run and 2000m Steeple Chase Alexander also made the national standard for

Caterpillar invasion Vanderhoof residents must have noticed the huge numbers of caterpillars covering their trees and the sidewalks. These caterpillars are known as Forest Tent caterpillars, and since there was no real die-off last year, the little pests have reached an above average population. The caterpillars’ preferred meals are aspen and poplar trees but they tend to avoid conifers according to Dr. Huber, an entomologist at UNBC. According to Dr. Huber’s blog, the caterpillars are a natural part of the forest ecosystem.

“Their removal of canopy leaves allows light to the forest floor, giving some plants down there a leg (or limb?) up,” states Huber in his blog. “Caterpillars and the moths that they become provide food for other organisms. Caterpillar poop gives a burst of nutrients to the forest floor. All of these things, over time and many cycles, make a forest what it is.” By now the caterpillars should be cocooning which will last for a few weeks until they burst out as moths in July.
