TERRACE - Final hearings into Enbridge’s massive Northern Gateway pipeline plan to ship Alberta oil to a marine terminal at Kitimat for export overseas are expected to wrap up next week. A federal review panel examining the multi-billion project began hearing oral summations June 17 at the Best Western Terrace Inn. Leading a list of 35 scheduled speakers was Enbridge itself with a two-hour presentation made by company lawyer Richard Neufeld. He said Enbridge had taken additional measures to ensure that the public, opponents, and those living along the pipeline

right-of-way could have confidence in the project. That includes specialized measures to ensure tankers will not have adverse effects on marine or terrestrial life, including a plan to monitor the marine environment three years prior to the project and three years afterward to ensure no negative effects on marine birds and shoreline communities, he said. From the outset of the project, it’s been believed that “emergency preparedness begins with accident prevention,” said Neufeld. Having escort tug boats is a measure above and beyond what others do – there are thousands and thousands of worldwide tanker ports and only a few use mitigation measures such as escort tugs, he said.

Rupert RCMP sniff out a local smoke shop By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT - Thousands of pipes, bongs and grinders were seized after a search warrant was executed at The Chad Smoke Shop, leaving the owner with no choice but to shut down the store. Const. Matt Ericson said officers entered the store at 1 p.m. on June 8 following a six-month investigation into the business. “This is an investigation the RCMP decided to take on ... these type of investigations are long in process and there is a lot of information to obtain before applying for and obtaining a search warrant,” he said. Section 462.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada states “every one who knowingly imports into Canada, exports from Canada, manufactures, promotes or sells instruments or literature for illicit drug use is guilty of an offence”. The Chad Smoke Shop owner Chad Wentworth said the Prince Rupert location was shut down effective June 10, with RCMP saying they would try to have the business licence revoked, and the result was three people losing their jobs. “They took 80 per cent of our inventory and are telling us we can’t try to get it back for 90 days, and after 90 days they could keep it for up to a year ... we can’t put inventory back in the store and you can’t run a business without inventory,” he said, noting this is the first time he has had to shut down a store. “I imagine it is a local thing and there were people who didn’t want us there. When

you have people high up who don’t want you it can be tough. But there’s no hard feelings, I don’t want to be somewhere we’re not wanted.” However, Wentworth said he enjoyed being in the community and would return if the RCMP and the city allowed them to reopen. “I was sorry to leave. I left on Monday with the rest of the inventory and a tear in my eye. I didn’t want to go,” he said. Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem said that while a City of Prince Rupert business licence entails trust that the business is operating within federal and provincial laws, council will wait to hear from the RCMP before taking any action. “The RCMP enforce a different set of laws than the city, and if there are any recommendations coming from the RCMP the city would consider them,” he said. There are other places in town where pipes can be purchased and Ericson said the RCMP may be taking a closer look at that. “At this time, we are focussing on this investigation. In terms of other businesses, there are concerns about this type of thing being sold in town and we certainly want to hear about it.” Currently there are 19 Chad Smoke Shop locations across the country, including four in B.C., 14 in Alberta and one in Newfoundland. As this investigation is ongoing, the Prince Rupert RCMP is asking anyone that may have information regarding this case to contact the Prince Rupert RCMP Detachment at 250-627-0700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Kitimat plugged into new world By Cameron Orr The Northern connector

KITIMAT - The District of Kitimat has unveiled two charging stations which will allow electric vehicle owners to zap some juice into their vehicles. One station is set up outside Envision Financial, while the other is set up outside the Riverlodge. To help pay for these devices, the District received money from the Plug-In BC program, which is administered by the Fraser Basin Council, and also through the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program, which is a grant the District receives for having signed on to B.C.’s Climate Action Charter. “We can now be part of the regional system where we can use electric cars,” said Mayor Joanne Monaghan at the event, where she was joined by councillors Mary Murphy and Rob

Goffinet. “I’m really excited about it and I think it’s something that Kitimat is right on the edge [of].” Demonstrating the charging station to onlookers was Mark Gravel, who works locally for Lapointe Engineering and sits on the Advisory Planning Commission. He purchased a Chevrolet Volt electric car last September, as response to his family’s desire to live sustainably. “We live a relatively small footprint at home,” he said, noting that they raise rabbits and bees at their home. “We are concerned about our footprint on the environment.” The Volt itself fit the bill when it came to wanting an electric car which suited northern living. While mileage does go down — because the battery does need to heat — he can still get around. He said it takes about

four hours to charge the battery — he’s until now usually charged it at a charging station at Lapointe’s — and that charge will get him through the week. It takes no more than $2 to reach full. There is a back-up gas engine in the vehicle as well, which charges the battery while in use. That gas engine allows him to make the trip to Terrace, as the charge itself isn’t quite enough, getting roughly 55 kilometres on a charge. He said the gas tank can hold about $30 worth of gas and he’s filled it up five times since he purchased the car last September. Michael Bergen with E.B. Horsman and Son supplied the charging units to the District and said that they’ve installed them in Dawson Creek but it’s still a relatively knew community feature in the north. He said people can go to the

Charge Point website to find charging locations and even reserve the station for certain times. While a Charge Point card or PayPass enabled credit or debit card is required to unlock the device, the unit is actually free to use. With Kitimat’s two Charge Point stations, they join one unit in Terrace, one in Houston, one in Burns Lake and three in Prince George. Although there are few electric vehicles, either ones that just one on electricity or ones that run on batteries and also on fuel, in the northwest the idea is to build up a network of charging stations. Once that is complete, the hope is that charging stations placed in strategic locations will encourage more and more people to consider purchasing and electric vehicle of some sort.

TERRACE - Two people have lost their lives in separate accidents. On June 15, 2013 at approximately 2 am, Nass Valley RCMP members responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 113 at the north end of Lava Lake, approximately 80 km north of Terrace BC. Two males and a female were traveling north on Highway 113 when their vehicle, a Pontiac Sunbird, left the road and rolled over. The 28 year old male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both passengers were transported to Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace BC. Due to the seriousness of injuries the female passenger was flown via air ambulance to Vancouver B.C. A 16-year-old youth from New Hazelton drowned in the late afternoon of June 16 on Seeley Lake. He was with two other young people when the three attempted to swim to an island. The surviving duo said their friend panicked and went under the water. RCMP officers were joined by conservation officers in searching for the youth and found him later that day.

MP outlines keys for northwest growth By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - As $60 billion in new resources projects are coming to the region, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen began dialogue with people in the riding surrounding conditions people believe should be set for companies looking to build in the Northwest. Cullen recently released the report Renewal Northwest 2013: Balancing the Economy with Our Local Values after compiling what he heard on the tour. The Renewable Northwest tour began in Prince Rupert in mid-February, and ended in Hazelton in mid-May. The conversations revolved around resource development, asking participants what kinds of conditions should a company have to meet to earn their right to operate, how they can be made more sustainable, and how benefits of these industries could be shared more mutually with people of the region. “The people of the Northwest are open to resource development, and more and more, companies are recognizing the importance of establishing themselves as respon-

sible operations with sustainable projects. In terms of resource development, I think more than anything, these discussions have shown that this is key towards earning the social license to operate,” said Cullen. The report lists key demands people of the Northwest want businesses and projects to meet to earn their social license. These included projects having a long term legacy by leaving a positive impact on communities and the environment in the long run, companies having accountability and helping to offset the increased use of social services, healthcare, roads, etc by contributing to upgrade and maintain them. Other key demands in the report consist of companies going local by offering training and jobs to the local workforce first, protecting the environment, treating communities as partners through consultation and respecting the rights of First Nations with consultation. The report also highlights the potential industries in the region, and what people think of them and expect from them. One of the industries mentioned in the report was pipelines, such as the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project, which people spoken to saw as an industry with short-term benefits

Prince Rupert’s

Winning run…

to the local economy with long-term risks to the local environment and economy. The report stated “participants noted that pipelines not only pose major spill risks, they often also ship jobs away with our resources by transporting raw resources that could be refined in Canada”. “The contrasts between what we determined through these discussions about sustainable, responsible companies and projects, and the Northern Gateway project, for example, are astonishing,” said Cullen. “Enbridge has set a global example in its dealings with the citizens of British Columbia of what not to do. When we look at the most basic criteria for respecting the environment, local communities and First Nations, and the regional economy, Enbridge draws a failing grade in each column.” The fishing industry was another discussed that’s relatable to Prince Rupert, with people saying it is an essential part of culture in the Northwest that is a strong economic driver of the region. The report also stated as a renewable resource, fisheries need to be managed carefully and protected from environmental and industrial threats from pollution and tanker traffic.

Students and staff collected pledges from the community ahead of the event, which also included a number of games throughout the day. The goal was to raise money for the Haisla Cancer Support Group, which uses money to support people with cancer or their families, including assisting people who have to fly south for treatments. In all, the school raised $3,338.35 for the fund, from 38 students and the staff. Principal Minnie Rosso said aside from raising money for a local cause, they wanted to teach kids in the school how to help others.

ir James Douglas, B.C.’s first governor, was certainly one of our province’s greatest historical figures. He had a profound influence on British Columbia and his name lives on in our Douglas Channel, the governor’s greatest geographical legacy. Douglas, was born in the tropics to Scottish parents. Early life in the Caribbean was tempered by schooling at Lanark, a prestigious prep school back in Scotland. His influential father, John Douglas, ensured that his son’s educational background was sound. After graduation, James took on a series of postings with the Hudson’s Bay Company (H.B.C.). With the mercantile giant, he had a tumultuous and colourful career. Some of his jobs were in B.C., including Fort Saint James and Fort Connelly, here in the north. It was during his northern postings, that he married Amelia, a woman of partial First Nations ancestry. James eventually advanced his career enough to become chief factor in Victoria. With an influx of coal miners and immigrant farmers to the Island, London eventually chose Douglas to become the governor of the new colony of Vancouver Island. Things really heated up in the 1850’s with the Fraser River and Cariboo gold strikes. With a flood of ambitious and unruly miners pouring into Victoria and then on to the Interior, action was needed. As Victoria’s Bishop Cridge later said in the eulogy delivered at the funeral for James Douglas, “the right man was in the right place.” Douglas was decisive and quite autocratic. He clearly saw the threat of hoards of miners, largely American from the declining gold diggings in California. He acted quickly to protect British interests. Without direct jurisdiction for the

Varley Collection, 1909, View of Kitamaat Village, Winter KITIMAT MUSEUM & ARCHIVES

mainland, Douglas expeditiously established British authority at New Westminster and Fort Langley. As Commander-in-Chief of the colony he required all miners to obtain British colonial mining licenses. He further imposed British law even before official authorization arrived from London. By August of 1858, the colonial office at Whitehall had officially installed Douglas as governor of the colony of Vancouver Island and the new colony of British Columbia. Sir James’ early training with the H.B.C. at northern postings certainly gave him a better understanding of his vast territory. Within months, Douglas had become a fulltime governor, severing ties with H.B.C., and he had quickly established British control. He had a team of Gold Commissioners on the mainland, efficient constables, and a travelling magistrate working throughout the mainland. His judge was the famed hanging judge, Mathew Bailey Begbie. According to Jean Barman, author of two of B.C.’s best known history books, “the gold rush was Douglas’s finest hour.” Douglas efficiently reduced the threat of annexation by the U.S.A. America was clearly, at the time, weighing their options in the Pacific Northwest. Within two years Douglas had influenced his superiors in London to strengthen the forces at Victoria. The British Empire made station Esquimalt Britain’s primary Pacific forces station, replacing the garrison in Valpariso Chile. At that time, they aimed to keep a force of 12 or more ships on station. As Commander-in-Chief of the two colonies, Douglas became Vice Admiral of the fleet. Within a few years, Douglas had to manoeuver through the rather explosive crisis between Britain and the U.S., often referred to as the Pig War. In this incident, major violence was narrowly avoided when American miners at one end of San Juan Island got into a dispute with some H.B.C. employees operating a sheep and pig farm on the other end of the island. Diplomatic efforts in London and Washington eventually

Sir James Douglas 1803-1877 Governor British Columbia

ironed out the situation. We know of at least one circumstance, where Douglas and his successors had to consider matters from our region. The problems were related to trade difficulties and secret societies. Action was finally taken in 1865, when the Royal Navy battleship Clio was dispatched to the Haisla Village of Kitamaat. The H.M.S. Clio, equipped with both sail and steam propellers, sailed right up to the village. It later anchored at the bay a few kilometers south of the village. (Now named Clio Bay). No doubt, the armed officer’s compliment decked out in military regalia must have made an impression. This is the version of what occurred, according to Elizabeth Anderson Varley in her book, Kitimat, My Valley. Apparently the Clio’s military mission was a success as the colonial government had no further trouble in Kitimat. Sir James lived in Victoria, B.C. He died in 1877 at the age of 73. He is buried at Ross Bay Cemetery and rests in a plot beside his wife, Lady Amelia Douglas. Douglas never did live long enough to see his name added to the Royal Navy charts. By the time of the first Quadra survey expedition in 1898, led by Louis Coste, Canadian engineer/surveyor, the fjord here had been officially named Douglas Channel. This was certainly appropriate recognition for Sir James Douglas and all he did in the development of British Columbia. In recent years, suggestions have been made that our August 1st long weekend, BC Day holiday, be re-named Douglas Day. This would mean changing the official designation from November 19th, commemorating the anniversary of his arrival at Fort Langley. Perhaps Kitimat will some day be able to market Douglas Day with our connection to Douglas Channel. Maybe someday a statue of Sir James will be erected with his arm extended towards the mighty channel that bears his name.

TERRACE - The Northwest Regional Airport continues to be one of the busiest places in the area with 14,203 passengers passing through its doors in May, an increase of more than 1,000 people compared to April’s figure of 13,150. It was also the first time in the airport’s history that it posted a monthly passenger figure of more than 14,000. To the end of May, the passenger count stands at 60,602 passengers, an increase of nearly 15 per cent over the 52,753 posted to the end of May 2012. “And our busiest month of the year, August, has yet to come,” said airport manager Carman Hendry of the increase in traffic this year. An expansion of the airport’s original washrooms, the ones by the arrival area, will make things more convenient for the growing number of passengers using the facility. Hendry expects work to be finished in little over a month. “Washrooms are the single largest issue in any customer satisfaction survey,” he added. “Cleanliness, size and convenience are what’s important.” The airport is also looking forward to Telus beefing up cell service and is also looking at ways to speed up its WIFI service. The passenger count has been steadily increasing, following the improving economic fortunes of the city and area. As an indication of the growth, Air Canada Jazz begins a fifth flight weekdays starting in July and Hawkair through partner company Central Mountain is now into its third week of Terrace to Calgary service via Prince George.

And, on occasion, Air Canada passengers may have the benefit of flying in a 50-passenger Bombardier-made jet instead of a Dash 8. One such jet was pressed into service on the Terrace to Vancouver run several times two weekends ago. The jets “are usually scheduled on other routes, but every day, aircraft can be substituted for any number of reasons from mechanical delays to weather delays where the aircraft is coming in from another location, etc.” said Air Canada’s Angela Mah. Another recent growth factor is carrier Hawkair landing a charter contract with Bechtel, the main company working on the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminum smelter rebuild project in Kitimat. A Hawkair Dash 8 is making trips each Saturday and Sunday ferrying workers to and from Vancouver. Hawkair general manager Rod Hayward said the charter provides Bechtel with the comfort that it can get its workers back and forth when needed. “This schedule was designed to meet their needs. We’ve sold the whole plane to them,” he said. These flight numbers will be recorded separately. Airport officials cite BC Hydro’s Northwest Transmission Line, the

One tanker group, which consists of two airtankers and one birddog plane, has been deployed to Palmer. Two three-person rappel crews also were deployed to Tok earlier. Considering the current and

forecasted provincial fire situation, sufficient personnel and resources remain in B.C. to respond appropriately to any fire activity. Crews can be deployed for up to 19 days, but can be recalled at any time. This is the second out-ofprovince deployment this year. The request for assistance was made through the Northwest Compact Agreement, which allows for mutual resource sharing with Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Canada Post has conditions for mail resumption on Farrow Street By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Residents on Farrow Street may get one, but only one, more shot to get mail service started again on their street. Late in May the District of Kitimat hand delivered letters to homeowners on Farrow Street, outlining the steps that might be taken to resume mail delivery after Canada Post stopped service late last year due to safety concerns. A dog at large was what was blamed by Canada Post for their reasons to stop delivery to the street. Service was discontinued twice in 2012 over concerns, the second time being the stoppage which continues today. Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Warren Waycheshen explained the possible solutions in the District’s letter to homeowners on the street. “Canada Post will resume mail delivery as the dog’s owners have taken steps to ensure it will not be running at large,” he wrote, but added a number of conditions that Canada Post has stipulated. Those conditions in-

clude the provision that if the dog does run at large again and impacts mail delivery, “Canada Post will permanently withdraw door-to-door mail delivery.” If that were to occur, the letter continues that the District would have to provide a community mail box for Farrow Street residents to pick up their mail. Such a box would be at or near Farrow Street and each home would have a locked unit. The letter was sent to collect input from residents ahead of Kitimat Council discussing the options. One letter was received in response, in the correspondence package sent to the Sentinel. The letter author, a resident of Farrow Street, says the solution to a recurring problem is not to permanently suspend mail delivery but to have the dog put down. The District, he writes, should create bylaws that allow it or work with lawyers to find ways to give themselves that power. Waycheshen said that council will discuss the direction suggested by Canada Post early July, once all comments have been collected from residents.

Mailboxes like these could be in Farrow Street’s future. He does say that the town’s new animal control bylaw does not give the town automatic authority to destroy a dog without going through a judge.

Rather the new classification of a dangerous dog can require a pet owner to either muzzle the dog or construct an enclosure to hold the animal.

BC ABORIGINAL MINE TRAINING ASSOCIATION / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Francine Gurney, Program Coach and Cindy Clayton, Program Coordinator in the BC AMTA New Aiyansh Office getting ready to equip their new computer lab to train local candidates.

Software helps mine trainees By Michelle Nahanee

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

VANCOUVER - Candidates of the British Columbia Aboriginal Mining Training Association (BC AMTA) will be able to master software literacy and put their best foot forward while job-hunting thanks to a recent software gift from TechSoup, a broker of technology donations for non-profits. The donation, which totals an estimated $15,000, will provide BC AMTA students from New Aiyansh and Williams Lake with 30 copies of Microsoft Office Professional, a world-class office management software program. “I think it’s pretty exciting, says Robert Mills, BC AMTA Regional Manager of Northwestern B.C, about the recent software donation from TechSoup. Mills oversees the area where the software will be utilized and says the donation will make a positive difference for local First Nations candidates training to enter the mining and exploration industry. “Most of our candidates in the North live in isolated communities and not everyone has access to a computer or laptop, so with the donation of Microsoft Office we have laptops setup specifically for our candidates to develop these skills. In New Aiyansh, a Nisga’a First Nations community in northwestern British Columbia, this donation comes as a pivotal time. The local BC AMTA office in New Aiyansh recently established a computer-training lab that will allow candidates to get familiar with Microsoft software and general technology skills.

First cruise visit of 2013 deemed a resounding success By Martina Perry

PORT EDWARD - The District of Port Edward was granted a one-year extension on its lease of the former school in the community, and chief administrative officer Ron Bedard said there are some big plans for the building. “We are in the process of working out a sublease with Pacific NorthWest LNG for the building, and will probably rent out a small portion of it to the PTI Group,” he said, adding the ultimate goal is to own the structure. “We have applied to purchase the school from crown land, and though the process would be done by now. It hasn’t progressed that far, which is why we needed the extension of the lease.”

Guests were greeted by Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem and RCMP members in red surge, with volunteer ambassadors providing information to tourists upon their arrival. Many cruise passengers took the opportunity to go on a number of tours and trips in the community. “The ambassadors had a lot of compliments. A look at Port Edward’s finance At the June 11, council received the Statement of Financial Information from staff showing the district is in good financial shape. As of Dec. 31, 2012, the total owed by Port Edward was $326,308 with $204,518 owed to the Municipal Finance Authority and $121,790 owed to the Northern Development Trust. In terms of payment there were only two employees making over $70,000. Bedard’s salary totalled $99,502 with $20,586 paid in expenses, while public works foreman Alistair Duffus was paid $82,124. Mayor Dave MacDonald received $9,820 in renumeration and councillors all received $5,720 in renumeration. Mayor MacDonald’s expenses totalled $14,583 while Councillor Knut Bjorndal had the highest expenses at $7,618 and Councillor Dan Franzen’s expenses were second highest at $4,581. New OCP in place During its June 11 meeting, the District of Port Edward officially adopted its new Official Community Plan and zoning bylaws. The new zoning creates additional industrial areas and a development permit area on the road connecting Port Edward to Hwy 16, creates plans for a bypass road tentatively named Wampler’s Way, creates new residential plans for the area behind the existing house and paves the way for future development. “What this allows us to do is to deal with the camp property, and there is another piece of property we are in the process of selling but were waiting for the zoning to be in place first,” said Bedard.

Emmi Lechner

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Emmi Lechner, known to many as “Oma. Emmi was born in Wernstein, Austria on February 28, 1929. On June 9, after fighting a short but courageous battle with cancer, Emmi passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home with family by her side. Emmi is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years Louis, sister Mitzi in Austria, children Emi (Bill), Ron (Jenny), Gord (Caroline), grandchildren Travis (Kaylee), Angela (Graham), Calvin (Chantelle), Darien, Morgan, Linden and great grandchild Addison. Emmi leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, especially for her children, grandchildren and great grandchild. Anyone that has ever crossed paths with her knows of her generosity, humour and good spirit. We would especially like to thank the Kitimat Health Support nurses Gloria, Elaine and Lennea and the ladies of the home support group, for their dedication in ensuring that Oma’s final days were spent in comfort and dignity. Anita Bereza

l

REVIEW!

March 29, 1917 to June 8, 2013

Anita peacefully slipped away in the wee hours of the morning. She left behind her loving husband of 63 years, Marshall, and two children, Danny (Gaynor) and Peggy (Roy). She was the second of seven children born to Bill and Margaret Murray and was the glue that held a large clan together, remembering birthdays and staying in touch with a multitude of nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her son Bill, Anita led a life of adventure, travelling throughout the world with Marshall, boating the waters of the Douglas Channel, teaching dancing and helping to manage the family jewellery store, Majestic Jewellers.

Mom will be sorely missed. She loved life and we loved her.

A celebration of life will be held at the home of her daughter, Peggy, at 1138 Oxford Street, Victoria, on June 30 from 2 through 5pm. Please join us.

Venman takes Men’s Jubilee Crown By Todd Hamilton

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Kitimat’s Dave Venman fought back from a threestroke deficit to capture the Prince Rupert Men’s Jubilee Golf Tournament on Sunday. Venman was three back of Ian Robinson heading into the final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament but Robinson’s quadruple bogey on the 346-yard Par 4 sixth immediately handed the lead to Venman. Staying patient and conservative in sweltering heat and drying course conditions was the key, Venman said. “The thing was to just stay down the middle, hit fairways and greens and par the course to death,” Venman said. “I love the heat ... I imagine [the heat] caught up to some of them. A three-day tournament like this can be tough ... it drains you mentally.” Robinson, who went on to win the Championship Flight, took an early lead with rounds of 70 and 73, but faltered on the final day ballooning to a 78 for a three-round total of 221. Venman started out rough but battled back on Saturday carding a two-under 68 before finishing it up on Sunday with a 71 for a tournament best 217. Sten Sundin, a four-handicap Prince Rupert groundskeeper, was a model of consistency as he made his way around the Centennial Course with rounds of 75, 74 and 73 to record the lowest overall net of 210. “I really just came out here to get some experience, competitive tournament experience,” Sundin said. “Winning [low net title] is really a shock to me ... I didn’t expect anything like this.” As temperatures rose over the course of the tournament, bumping 30C on Sunday, the normally wet, slow Rupert course dried out giving

players an extremely different challenge. “At the start of the tournament the greens were running about 8.5 on the stimpmeter ... by Sunday they were 10,” Sundin said. “Quick greens scare the hell out of me but I putted fairly well for how fast they were.” Venman also noted the improvement in the course. “The first day it had its areas, the greens were slow and had a few bumps ... but the superintendent did a hell of a job to cut and roll the greens like this.” Despite the heat, scoring conditions improved significantly in Round 3, something of which the eventual flight winners took advantage. In the Championship Flight, Round 2 leader Ian Robinson held off Scott Rigler by three strokes who carded rounds of 75, 76 and 73. Brian Holkestad finished in third with rounds of 80, 75 and 76 for an overall gross of 231. Trevor Deschamp destroyed the field in the First Flight signing off on rounds of 77, 79 and 77 for a 54hole total of 233 for the low gross title over Ravi Baldwan, who finished 13 strokes back at 246. Baldwan took second on a countback against Bobby Smith who also posted a 246. Sandy Anderson, an 11-handicap, posted a 207, seven better than second place Ross McNish at 214 and nine better than Rob Brown who finished third with a 216. In the Second Flight, Roy Cage carded rounds of 82, 85 and 91 for a three-round total of 258. Minhas Ranveer finished four-back with a 262, which was two better than third place finisher Colin Zenuk at 264. Nippy Sahdra, a 17-handicap, capture the Second Flight Low Net with a 215 with Richard Adams coming in two strokes back at 217.

Andrew Schaeffer finished up with a 220 total. George Kuntz rode two final rounds of 84 and 88 on his way to dominating the Third Flight. Kuntz registered a 54-hole score of 266 to post a 15-stroke victory over second place Paul Zenuk who finished with a 281. Mike Minhas posted the third lowest gross in the Third Flight with

a 284. Twenty-five handicapper Eric Hand was the class of the Third Flight low net field posting a 26-stroke victory over second place James Horne and third place Gillaume Coetzee. Hand finished the tournament with a net score of 199 with Horne at 225 and Coetzee at 227.

TERRACE - Fourteen riders turned out for the 7th annual Tour de Jackpine two weekends ago, with riders from Terrace to Telkwa climping the loop. The near 31 kilometre route, boasts two long climbs and a roller section near the Jackpine flats subdivision and consists of three loops, with rec categories for cyclists wanting to do the loop only once or twice. “Lots of volunteers helped make the race a successful and safe experience,” said organizer Michael Bruce, who noted a strong showing from Smithers this year. Indeed, Neil Hodgson of Smithers (2:45:20) took the top spot. James Woodworth (2:46:46) of Telkwa in second; third Bruno Hidber (2:46:50) of Terrace; fourth Dan Broad (2:48:33) of Terrace; fifth, Colin Parr (2:59:30) of Terrace; sixth Dan Fisher (3:19:29) of Terrace. In the rec two lap category, Ron Lowe (1:59:55) of Telkwa crossed the line first, with Tammy Wilson (2:06:43) of Terrace in second; Ryan Gordon (2:07:14) of Terrace in third; Phil Kubik (2:12:32) of Terrace in fifth and Maya Siri Wardana (2:28:33) of Kitimat in sixth. And for the one lap rec category, Ed Cooper (1:07:55) of Terrace was first; Ernest Hidber (1:07:56) of Terrace second, and Annie Marie DuFour (1:17:13) of Kitimat in third. The next cycling event, also put on by the Terrace Off Road Cycling Association (TORCA), is August’s Skeena River Challenge.

Winters haven’t been kind to the Calgary Flames in the last couple of years, but perhaps the summer of 2013 will mark the beginning of a return to becoming a National Hockey League powerhouse. When the NHL brass gathers in New Jersey next week for the amateur draft, the Flames will not have a crack at the consensus top two players, defenceman Seth Jones of Portland Winter Hawks and Nathan McKinnon of the Halifax Mooseheads, but they’ll nonetheless have a great draft haul. The Flames will have an unprecedented — for them — three picks in the first round, and if general manager Jay Feaster and his scouting staff are up to snuff, this could be the start of something good. Two of those first-round selections in what is generally regarded as a strong draft class came as a result of the Flames facing reality at the trade deadline in March — that it was time to throw in the towel and start rebuilding. See ya, Jarome, as Iginla was traded to Pittsburgh for, among other things, a first-round pick. Defenceman Jay Bouwmeester was then sent packing to St. Louis in exchange for a package of players including the Blues’ first-round selection in the draft. The Flames’ draft buffet in the first round shakes down like this: their own pick at No. 6, the Blues’ first-rounder at No. 22 and the Penguins’ first choice at No. 28. John Weisbrod, the Flames’ assistant general manager, said Feaster might be open to some wheeling and dealing on draft day, using that trio of first-rounders as currency to perhaps

trade for some additional assets. “But,” Weisbrod told NHL.com, “we like the way things sit right now. We like the idea of picking three times, but we’ve got a lot of things to address with our team.” After being on the playoff sidelines for four consecutive years, it’s about time for the Flames to get a new look. With three first-rounders and a fairly strong nucleus of youth — Mikael Backlund and Sven Baertschi among others — a team that will be much younger next year might struggle for one more season, guaranteeing it one more high draft choice, before the run to respectability begins for real in 2014-15. • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Golf is outlawing those long, anchored putters that many pros use. I wish golf would outlaw the putter I use that’s always three-putting greens.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “A Houston Astros vendor was fired for going into a toilet stall with a tray of snow cones. We’ll have more on this and other scoops.” • Cote again: “The Dolphins have been having practices called OTAs, or Organized Team Activity days. I love that phrase. Makes it sound like summer camp and today they’re all making log cabins out of popsicle sticks.” • Scott Mitchell of Sunmedia, on Twitter: “It’d be great if the (Ottawa) RedBlacks new unis were yellow and blue.” • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “Interesting opinion by noted basketball analyst Dennis Rodman: “If LeBron was playing in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, he would be just an average player.” Rodman is probably right. LeBron would be about 7 years old.”
