Due to an increase in wildfire activity, B.C. sent firefighting personnel to the Yukon announced Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson Wednesday. One agency representative, three initial attack crews from the Cariboo Fire Centre, four initial attack crews from the Prince George Fire Centre, one regional wildfire coordination officer from the Kamloops Fire Centre and one regional wildfire coordination officer from the Prince George Fire Centre were deployed. Initial attack crews travelled from Williams Lake to Prince George on Wednesday and then flew from Prince George to Whitehorse. This is the third out-of-province deployment this year. Current conditions in B.C. make it possible to share resources. The request for assistance was made through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre,. Deployment costs are covered by the receiving jurisdictions. There was one small wildfire of note caused by a lightning strike on Wednesday near Riske Creek. “An Initial Attack crew from Williams Lake attended to the fire and returned Thursday to execute mop-up on yet another ‘kick and spit.’ The tree that was hit burned itself out but crews actioned the site with water and hand tools, and will likely fall the dangerous broken-up tree today,” Cariboo Fire Information officer Greig Bethel said. “The Cariboo Fire Centre would like to alert the public to possible holdover wildfires from lightning strikes during the past few weeks. These holdovers, or sleepers, can sit within a tree or its roots system until drier, warmer weather and then reappear,” Bethel added.

Poplars may not be popular ... but they should be It would appear our drought of several years has finally come to an end. Awakening to the sound of rain gently falling on our metal roof for most of the month has been a treat. I love the sound of rain. I had almost forgotten how the world smells after it has fallen. You just don’t get the same effect from a watering can. And no matter how diligent you are about packing water, plants just don’t thrive from hand watering the way they will from a rainfall; a bit odd when you think about it, given that all of our water originates from rain. And it’s not just the chemicals they use to treat water to blame. Even water from a dugout or a rain barrel doesn’t make

plants jump to life like a good rain will. It has something to do with the humidity in the air or fresh nitrogen being released or some such thing. Whatever the science is behind it, I am just grateful it happens. Nature is pretty wonderful. Most of the time. My sister who lives in Prince George has been listening to the sound of rain in her garden as well; except she hears it even when it isn’t raining. A disconcerting situ-
ation to say the least! They are currently facing an infestation of tent caterpillars that have been defoliating their trees. It turned out the rain-like noise was actually the sound of thousands of caterpillars munching leaves. It’s like something out of a science fiction thriller movie. People are shoveling the caterpillars off doorsteps and walkways. In some areas there are so many worms on the highway vehicles are going into a skid as they lose traction over a foundation of slippery caterpillar carcasses. There are snow tires, summer tires and all season radials but to the best of my knowledge Bridgestone has yet to come up with a wheel for worm conditions.

We have had similar infestations up here in the past, but so far (knock wood) the sound of rain is just the sound of rain. However, there are places around us where the poplars are in trouble. Large stands of trees are either failing to leaf out at all or only unfurling a few insignificant clumps. It looks similar to what has been happening in the Rockies over the past ten years. Labelled SAD (Sudden Aspen Decline) the phenomenon has been decimating poplar groves in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and other areas of the Rockies. The causes are uncertain. The bronze poplar borer is often present in dying stands but unlike the pine beetle these insects usually don’t
kill the trees. They do weaken them however, as do a multitude of other factors, such as drought which has also been a problem in the areas affected. Aspens grow in colonies; each tree is a genetic clone of the one beside it. There is a stand in Utah that covers 108 acres and—depending on what paper you read—is said to be the world’s heaviest, largest or oldest organism. While individual aspens can live up to 150 years, the colonies themselves can be thousands of years old. Usually when aspens are attacked by insects or disease or wiped out by wildfire the colony responds by sending up a profusion of new shoots. Anyone who mows a lawn within throwing distance of an
aspen has witnessed their tenacity. Leave a lawn un-mowed for just a few days and tiny aspen shoots will soon be standing a foot high in an effort to reclaim their space. The disturbing thing is the stands in the Rockies don’t seem to be doing this. They are simply dying out. I’m not sure if that’s the case here. Hopefully the recent rains will turn things around. We are still reeling from the loss of our pines to the pine beetle. Losing our aspen as well would make for a desolate landscape to say the least. Given nature’s way, I suppose something would come along to replace them but as the song goes “we don’t know what we have ‘til it’s gone.” In the case of aspens— and other poplars—

Just a reminder that during the summer days and you’re spending the day outdoors, even when it’s cloudy, still apply sunscreen. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can’t be seen or felt and has nothing to do with temperature but still can burn even on cloudy days. Heart disease is 8 times more deadly than breast cancer and it kills more women each year than all cancers combined. Sometimes, the symptoms of a heart attack in women are different from men. There may be shortness of breath, sweating, unusual fatigue and may include chest pain. Waste no time calling 911 if these symptoms are happening to you. Brittle or cracking finger nails is often due to loss of moisture in the nails. A clear nail polish can help reduce moisture loss even for men. Historically, people used to take gelatin capsules for this problem but it doesn’t really work. Gelatin contains protein but it doesn’t contain the two amino acids, lysine and tryptophan, two important building blocks to making protein. Food protein sources are best. “Swimmer’s ear” is an inflammation of the outer ear canal caused by prolonged wetness of the area during swimming. Symptoms include pain, itching and a feeling of fullness. A home remedy you might keep on hand is a mixture of equal parts rubbing alcohol and vinegar. Instill a few drops into the ears after swimming and it helps to dry out the area.
gardeners curse them and landscapers shun them. Their ability to grow in harsh climates has given them a weedy reputation. Even so, few western Canadians would feel at home without aspen’s lemon foliage making a splash against the cobalt autumn sky. In the summer the soft sound of their quivering leaves foretelling a storm or simply moving in the breeze is as indigenous to our culture as the call of a goose. And is there a more uplifting sight than a hillside covered in their lime green leaves in the spring? So let it rain, I won’t complain. It could be worse. Premier cancels political staff raises Tom Fletcher Black Press Premier Christy Clark has rolled back salary increases for political staff, after getting an earful from voters. Clark told reporters Wednesday that salary increases for her chief of staff and new positions with the same title in ministers’ offices will not go ahead. “I have heard a lot from British Columbians in the last week about this issue of changing the pay scales and pay levels for political staff, so today I am rescinding those changes, because leadership means listening to people,” Clark said. “Although the original change would have meant we were
under spending the budget by $100,000, I’ve heard loud and clear that people didn’t like it.” The lone exception is Clark’s new deputy chief of staff, Michele Cadario, hired for the premier’s office after serving as deputy campaign manager for the B.C. Liberal election campaign. Cadario will receive a salary of $195,148 to do the operations and policy roles formerly done by two people. Dan Doyle, Clark’s chief of staff, remains at the same salary as Cadario. A government spokesman said Doyle never accepted any raise, but recommended the maximum for his position be increased to $230,000 to attract
the best candidate for his successor. The top rate for ministry chiefs of staff, formerly ministerial assistants, will remain at $94,500 a year. The top rate for them was first increased to $105,000, then rolled back to $102,000 before being cancelled. Five of the people appointed to those jobs have had raises cancelled. NDP leader Adrian Dix, contacted in Kelowna where he is campaigning in a byelection where Clark hopes to win a seat, said the raises show the government is “tone deaf ” to the concerns of ordinary people. Dix said the decision to scrap the raises is “the first victory for Carole Gordon,”
the NDP candidate in the WestsideKelowna byelection. Gordon is running in the byelection
called for July 10, after Clark was defeated by NDP candidate David Eby in a bid to retain her Vancou-
ver-Point Grey seat. In the May 14 general election, Gordon lost by nearly a two-to-one margin
to B.C. Liberal incumbent Ben Stewart, who resigned last week to allow Clark to run.

B.C. losing people to other provinces Tom Fletcher Black Press VICTORIA – More people continue to move from B.C. to other provinces than migrate west, according to the latest Statistics Canada estimates. Quarterly Statistics Canada figures show a net loss of 1,611 people from B.C. to other provinces from January to March this year. That is the seventh straight quarter of net outmigration from B.C., with the last net increase of 73 people
recorded in the AprilJune quarter of 2011. In 2012, while B.C. was a net loser of about 7,000 in interprovincial movements, Alberta gained about 43,000 and Saskatchewan gained about 2,500 people. NDP leader Adrian Dix said Wednesday the latest totals mean B.C. has lost a net 12,000 people to other provinces since Premier Christy Clark took over. What ails the NDP? Plenty
B.C. VIEWS TOM FLETCHER
After 34 NDP MLAs were sworn in to continue a stretch of opposition that will reach at least 16 years, leader Adrian Dix took a few questions about his future. The party’s provincial council will meet June 21 to set the terms of reference for a review of the party’s dismal election performance, Dix told reporters. He repeated that his performance won’t be spared, and ticked off some conventional wisdom about the NDP campaign. Dix mentioned the alleged lack of “negative” ads, the local campaigns (read candidates), the decreasing reliability of polls and, when pressed, his surprise decision to come out against the proposed twinning of the TransMountain oil pipeline. Like last week’s hysteria over a tiny leak in that pipeline, these are great sound bites for the short attention spans of the modern media. But they don’t explain much. This all-powerful NDP provincial council is a case in point. A glimpse into its inner workings was provided by a summary of an NDP policy development workshop called “Imagine Our Future” that was leaked by the B.C. Liberals in the final days of the campaign.
The workshop took place in November 2010, coincidentally at the same provincial council meeting where the revolt against former leader Carole James tumbled into the open. While 13 caucus members were knifing their leader for reasons they still can’t or won’t articulate in public – a glaring problem in itself – the backroom policy brainstorm revealed a deeper malaise. Among the “dream tree” notions put forward in the workshop was “free” post-secondary tuition and public transit, along with raising wages and lowering fees for daycare. This isn’t a dream tree, it’s a money
tree. Remember, this is the NDP’s ruling body, not a high school “social justice” class or an Occupy Vancouver squat. Showing a glimmer of adult supervision, the workshop table on “equitable tax policy” even identified the problem. Its first recommendation: “Increase our economic and financial literacy to gain credibility.” The “public ownership” table really got radical. Scrap public-private partnerships, the basis of most government construction today. “Nationalize” independent power projects, in the Venezuelan style of
state seizure of private assets. And perhaps most incredibly, tear up the trade agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. that harmonizes transport truck regulations and so forth. In the real world, the four western premiers met this week in Winnipeg. And the three-province project now called “New West Partnership” will continue to dismantle archaic inter-provincial barriers. Why would the NDP be secretly against that? Because it’s also a “labour mobility” agreement. This harkens back to a supposed golden age in
Canada, when two corporate titans shared the beer business, producing identical bland lager from identical factories in identical stubby bottles. Inter-provincial trade in these stubbies was strictly forbidden, requiring each province to have a big unionized brewery to make uniformly bad beer for the proletariat. This is the power of a monopoly union. And because of it, this was how governments tried to “create jobs.” It’s a bygone era to which many core NDP supporters stubbornly cling. This explains the party’s revival of a “job protection commissioner”
for forestry. Which brings us to the proverbial root cause of the B.C. NDP’s woes. Its largest financial donor is the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union, which donated $1.4 million to the party in the past eight years, nosing out the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Hospital Employees’ Union. Former HEU and BCGEU presidents now sit in the NDP caucus, critics for health and “green” jobs respectively. KidSport Classic runs Sunday in Boitanio Park Greg Sabatino Hundreds of participants will gather this Sunday, June 23 in Boitanio Park for this year’s KidSport Classic half marathon, relay and 10-kilometre walk and run. But, don’t let the name fool you, the event is not just for kids. Everyone is invited to take part to help raise money for the Williams Lake and District KidSport Chapter. KidSport chairperson Denise Skarra, secretary Deb Radolla, communications director Brian
Stefan and treasurer Mike Franklin spoke to reporters Tuesday morning about the importance KidSport plays in the community in helping cover the costs of sports registration for kids who might not otherwise get the chance to play sports. In 2012 110 kids were assisted in registering for a sporting activity in Williams Lake. Of those, 79 were boys and 31 were girls and kids were given the chance to register with 11 different sports organizations in nine different sports. In total, the Williams
Lake and District KidSport Chapter provided $14,310 in financial support to families in 2012. “Our primary goal is to enrol children in sport in Williams Lake,” Stefan said. “Our first position and our first answer to enrol children is always a yes and we always do our best to make their application fit our criteria.” Every cent of the money raised stays in the community, he added. “Our expenses equal zero,” he said, noting a few big events annually such as Canadian Tire’s
Jumpstart Day, Operation Red Nose, the Ryan Schonke Memorial Baseball Tournament and, of course, the KidSport Classic run help fund the organization. This year, Williams Lake McDonalds donated the proceeds from its McHappy Day and McHappy Fun Run to KidSport, resulting in a $4,000 boost. Ad-
ditionally Telus and Kiwanis help sponsor KidSport. Skarra noted KidSport can provide a maximum of $200 per child once a year to help them play the sport of their choosing. “We’re probably about 65 or 70 per cent new applications each year,” Franklin said. “That’s pretty consistent. There are
a few kids that repeat but there are some we only see once.” “People see it as an alternative,” Stefan added. “Rather than having to say no to their children they can say yes.” KidSport applications are available on the City of Williams Lake website, the provincial KidSport website, the Cariboo Memorial Recreation
Complex and at various schools throughout the district. The KidSport Classic begins Sunday at 8 a.m. in Boitanio Park and includes both individual, relay and team categories. For route maps, parent information and school team information visit www. activewilliamslake. com/activeindex. asp?p=834.

The Confession of a Catholic Priest If God is always merciful and always forgiving, how could He send anyone to hell? Maybe God does not send anyone to hell; rather, we send ourselves. Well, who in the world wants to go to hell? Allow me to use myself as example of how my choices in the past could have easily lead me to this eternal decision of separating myself from God of my own free choosing. When I was about 13 years old I had a paper route with the Vancouver Sun. One day as I was approaching the home of one of my customers to collect money, I went by their car in their parking lot and found $20 near the car door. I thought that someone must have dropped it while they got out of the car. My initial intention was to go to the house and ask if they had lost money. I knocked on the house door, and a little boy answered the door. I chose not to ask the little boy about the money, but asked if his Mom or Dad were home. The little boy went away and brought the money for my paper route bill. I did not want to ask the little boy again for his
house that the mother would come out and ask me, “Are you sure?” Then I would have to protect my lie again. Now, supposing that at the end of my life as I enter towards the gates of heaven, that house is sitting right before the gates. The only way I can get to heaven is to walk through this house and admit that I lied. Maybe I won’t have enough humility. I may choose to stay outside of heaven. Now, imagine at the end of my PARSONS PEN PARSONS PEN life as I enter towards the gates of BY JEREMY VOGT BY Father Derrick heaven and there is a long line of people that I have cheated, lied, parents, so I let this issue pass hurt, etc. I may think to myself, by. “I rather not go to heaven.” If I The next day I received a phone cannot make peace with people call from the boy’s mother. God wants us to get to heaven, She said, “Are you sure?” I but we have to humble ourselves replied, “Yup!” to enter. As one saint said, “The I had lied two times in less gates of heaven are low, only the than half a minute. humble may enter.” Sure enough I got away with Anyone who is curious or has the money, but failed to realize questions about the Catholic that I would have to deliver Faith, or would like to go for a papers to this house six days coffee, please contact Father a week. News Boom, thunder cracks and the lightning strikes! This mighty fir tree (left) at Alkali Lake was a recent victim of one of those seemingly random lightning strikes. Luckily there was no accompanying fire. But, what a mess! With a base in excess of two-feet in diameter, this denizen of the forest was in perfect health when last seen 10 or so days earlier.
The aftermath (wreckage) left by lightning striking the fir tree above is stunning in scope. The forest giant was literally blown to smithereens! The debris-field extends in at least a fifty-foot radius. Luckily no one was standing in close proximity when the strike happened. This week Alkali was also subjected to a torrential downpour that was preceded by minimarshmallow-sized hailstones (left). Liz Twan photos

LERAE HAYNES One of the youngest dancers at the Father’s Day Powwow grand entry at Sugar Cane last Saturday was two-and-a-halfyear-old Matoska Baker-Peters. He enjoyed the weekend festivities, along with mom Amanda Baker, who made his dance regalia, dad Vince McDonald and seven month old brother Nahpvyo. The young brothers’ names are significant, says Amanda. She explained that Matoska’s name is Cree for White Bear. Nahpvyo’s name, loosely translated from Cree, means Man Who Stands Tall on His Two Feet Who Comes From a Woman. “Matoska learned to dance from watching other people,” Amanda said. “He loves it, you can’t keep him off the dance floor.’

Morris Bates in concert June 29 to release new CD Morris Bates, the lakecity’s popular home-grown Elvis tribute artist has his voice back and will be giving a one night concert in Williams Lake on Saturday June 29 to celebrate
the launch of his new CD Our Land. Raised at Sugar Cane, Bates discovered early on in his youth that he looked and sounded just like Elvis and built his musical career as
an Elvis tribute artist. He travelled the world with his show and had the longest one-man show in Las Vegas, other than Wayne Newton before his voice
gave out due to overstrain. He went on to become a social worker in Vancouver, write his own story and work to inspire First Nations youth to be all they can be.
Bates will be in concert at the Gibraltar Room, Saturday, June 29 starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Margett’s Meats and Audio Video Unlimited.

RECREATION HOME FOR ALL SEASONS A recreation home for all seasons, this two-storey design with its deep veranda and dormer windows offers plenty of room for entertaining visitors. But because the master suite occupies the entire secondfloor, the owners’ comfort and privacy are assured. A covered entryway provides protection from rain and snow, as well as shade on summer days, and leads into a double-height foyer that contains a corner display shelf, as well as a convenient coat cupboard. Double-height ceilings add drama and flair to the great room and the dining room. The dining room’s French doors open onto stairs down to the back garden, and the great room’s fireplace will provide a focal point during the cooler months. Windows on all sides will allow plenty of natural light. A raised eating bar separates the kitchen from the dining room, allowing a busy cook to keep in touch with activities elsewhere. The kitchen’s U-shaped counter configuration promises efficiency, as does the generous pantry. Also on the main floor are a mud room with a handy bench and a covered entry, as well as closets for linen and cleaning tools. Close to the second bedroom, which could double as a den, is a three-piece bathroom. Upstairs, a sloping ceiling lends the master bedroom
a rustic charm. The spacious en suite features a soaker tub as well as a shower stall. Exterior finishes include horizontal wooden siding, stone accents and painted trim. A hipped brick chimney serves the great room fireplace. Totaling 1,753 square feet, this design measures 46 feet, six inches wide, and 37 feet deep. Plans for design 5-3-656 are available for $676 (set of 5), $766 (set of 8) and $819 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 7% P.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges. Our NEW 45TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Although it’s been fifteen years the memory of our father still lingers on in the... jokes and stories of his still shared, many cabinets and buildings he built, homes he created and renovated, gleam in his Grandson Jordan’s eyes, warmth in all of our hearts, and in all the other ways that he humbly touched so many lives, ...truly Unforgettable.

Denis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away suddenly at 66 years of age. All who knew and loved him remember him as a solid and deeply principled man who loved to be surrounded by his friends and family. He took great enjoyment in hunting, fishing and gardening and was a longtime member of the BC Wildlife Federation. Denis was born and raised on a farm in West Sannich where he developed a strong work ethic and love of animals and the outdoors. After high school he left Victoria and headed for the north, working for the BC Forest Service while living with his sister Ruby and family in the Bulkley area. He saved enough money to buy his dream car, a 1967 Chevelle, later to become the source of many a great story. In 1968 he met Georgina, his wife of forty-four years, at the White Spot Drive-In with 6 simple words, “What kind of car is that?” They started a life together first in Duncan and later settled in Big Lake, where they became part of the fabric of the community, always willing to lend a hand to his neighbours, friends and family. Retirement brought grandchildren and provided for more quality time with family over the holidays and camping, hunting and fishing. He took more enjoyment out of watching others catching fish than in catching one himself, often eager to hand his rod to someone else to reel in. He was a proud father and doted over his granddaughters. Lovingly remembered by his wife Georgina, son Jeffery (Anita), daughters Tracy and Jennifer (Branden Moskwa), and granddaughters Sage and Jamie and brother David (Georgina). He was predeceased by his father Walter, mother Edna, sister Ruby Swan, and granddaughter Amelia Moskwa. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in Denis’ name directly to Williams Lake Chapter of the Mental Health Association, or the BC Wildlife Federation.
