Hail storm wipes out orchard crop RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

Four years of intense labour was wiped out in a matter of minutes for Manjeet and Jaspal Sandher. A powerful hail storm descended on the couple’s orchard at the north end of Swan Lake Monday, wiping out the cherry and apple crop. “It’s very disappointing, very heartbreaking,” said Manjeet. Leaves on the four-year-old trees are shredded while the developing ambrosia and gala apples are covered in divots. The situation is just as bad among the sweetheart, centennial and staccato cherries. “It’s almost 100 per cent loss,” said Manjeet of the 60 acres along Highway 97. “There isn’t anything (salvageable). I tried to find one apple and there isn’t any.” The orchard was planted in 2009 and this was just the second year of production. “We were preparing to produce a nice crop,” said Jaspal, adding that all of the necessary steps to ensure growth, such as thinning and disease control, had occurred earlier in the season. They were just four weeks away from harvesting cherries. Now, they have no marketable crop — but the work must continue. “They need to keep the trees healthy for next year’s crop. You can’t let disease build up,” said Lynn Lashuk, an agrologist with Growers Supply. “It’s heartbreaking. With a young block (of trees) it’s so exciting when the fruit comes along.”

Fruit Growers Association president, has also visited the orchard.

“It’s the worst I have ever seen,” he said. On top of lost revenue, government assistance will be minimal as trees must be into the fourth year of production for full coverage. “We don’t have enough insurance,” said Manjeet, whose orchards in the BX also sustained some hail damage.

“The government should send a representative to see what we had and go by that (instead of how old the trees are).” But while challenges remain, the Sandhers remain dedicated to farming. “Even though we were hit hard, we will do what we have to so we have a good crop. We will never give up,” said Manjeet.

Torrential rain has soaked the record book. Environment Canada reports there was 73 millimetres of rain in Enderby and 36 millimetres at Coldstream Ranch during a 24-hour period ending at about 7 a.m. Thursday. Coldstream Ranch’s previous rainfall record for June 19 was 18.5 millimetres in 1913. “This is an incredible rainfall,” said Doug Lundquist, an Enironment Canada meteorologist. “From May 15 to July 15 is our monsoon season, but this is above the top.” There was 51 millimetres of rain recorded at the Mabel Lake forestry station. It’s anticipated that another record (13.6 millimetres on June 20, 2003) was shattered Thursday because 10 to 20

millimetres of rain was forecast depending on the location. The normal rainfall for the entire month of June is 54 millimetres. “Enderby got a month-and-a-half of rain in 24 hours,” said Lundquist, adding that the showers are a result of weather originating in the southern U.S. and moving into B.C. However, the North Okanagan should start drying out

over the next few days. “There will be some thunder showers for the weekend but we will be back to more normal conditions,” said Lundquist. Today, there is a 40 per cent chance of showers late in the afternoon and in the evening. For Saturday, there is a 60 per cent chance of showers and a high of 18, while it should be cloudy and a high of 24 Sunday. The rainfall warning Wednesday and Thursday led officials to warn that flooding could occur in low-lying areas. North Okanagan Emergency Management says residents living near creeks, streams and lakes are responsible for having a plan as well as the tools and equipment necessary to protect their properties from possible flood damage. Stockpiles of sandbags are available in communities throughout the region.

It’s easier to find a place to live in Vernon, but prices remain high. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reports Vernon’s apartment vacancy rate went from 6.3 to 7.7 per cent from April 2012 to April 2013. But the average monthly rent has gone from $709 to $714. “When the vacancy goes up, the rent should go down,” said Juliette Cunningham, a city councillor. “It’s still a challenge for people with limited resources to find suitable accommodations.” Cunningham isn’t sure why the vacancy rate has increased, although it’s possibly related to people leaving the region to find work. The CMHC report states there was a total of Sharkey 1,592 private apartment units in Vernon in April 2012 and 1,583 in April 2013. The rent for a bachelor suite has gone from $517 to $524 while a one-bedroom unit has gone from $635 to $636 and a two-bedroom apartment has climbed from $778 to $785. Rent for a three-bedroom unit has stayed flat at $851. “Normally a higher vacancy rate results in rents dropping in price. This is not the case,” said Annette Sharkey, with the Social Planning Council. “In particular, high rents impact quality of life for lone parent families, low income seniors and marginalized populations.” Beyond being just a social issue, Sharkey insists that a lack of affordable housing negatively impacts the economy. “Affordable rents are needed to attract and retain families to our community,” she said. “Vernon needs a strong base of working families for economic stability and growth. If our community can’t provide affordable housing, we lose out on economic growth.” Cunningham says the city is working with private companies to improve conditions and one option is insisting on below-market rental units when council gives approval to a development proceeding. “I hope that once they are built, that may help families to move into something more appropriate for families and to free up housing for singles,” she said.

Facility deal generates split

Politicians are divided over how long they may be together in a restructured recreation structure. There is the possibility of turning over ownership of all recreational facilities to Vernon, with Coldstream and the electoral areas providing an annual operating grant. But while Vernon has suggested a 15-year agreement term, the other participants have indicated an interest in only a fiveyear period. “It keeps our pencils sharp. We need to answer our residents all of the time on rates,” Jim Garlick said Jim Garlick, Coldstream mayor. “A five-year period allows us to look at the service and make sure we’re getting value for money for all sides involved.” The city has stated it wants a 15-year agreement to provide certainty, particularly with large financial matters. However, it has suggested renegotiation or withdrawal could occur every five years. “We’re taking over ownership over the longterm and not five years,” said Catherine Lord, a Vernon councillor. “I worry about new politicians (in the future) saying, ‘This has been done for five years and what other options do we have?’” Juliette Cunningham, Vernon councillor, doesn’t believe the other jurisdictions should be concerned. “Our motivation is like Coldstream and B and C’s and that’s to have the best value for our citizens,” she said. Mike Macnabb, BX-Silver Star director, doesn’t support the city’s position. “If you can have a term for 15 years but pull out after five years, it doesn’t make sense,” he said. “It muddies the water. it gives an impression that’s not true and not correct.” Under the proposed structure, Vernon could own the key recreation facilities, including possibly Kal Tire Place, and make all of the decisions. Coldstream and the electoral areas would not have a say in operations but they would provide an annual grant to ensure facility access for their residents. Presently, some of the facilities are owned by the Regional District of North Okanagan and the city, while operations are provided by the city under contract. If an agreement was not renewed by a jurisdiction, it is possible Vernon could charge those residents more to use facilities. But all officials believe that situation is unlikely. “There would be such push-back from residents and we will take every step to avoid that,” said Garlick.

Tolko takes break Morning Star Staff

A North Okanagan forestry company is curtailing operations. Tolko Industries is initiating market-related downtime during the week of July 1 at its Spallumcheen and Lumby plywood operations. “We notified employees Tuesday morning and thanked them for their patience during this time,” said Lou Bouwmeester, general manager. “Our goal now is to minimize the impact of this curtailment on employees and their families and to get production back online as soon as reasonably possible.” The plywood division at Heffley Creek, near Kamloops is also impacted. Production is scheduled to resume July 8. Vernon-based Tolko is a producer and marketer of lumber, veneer, plywood, oriented strand board, and kraft paper in Western Canada.

Considerable volunteer effort went into the Taylor Van Diest Memorial Trail, which opens Sunday at 11 a.m.

Taylor Van Diest would have liked the trail, not the attention. On Sunday, Van Diest’s family and the community of Armstrong will officially open a trail in the city built and named in honour of Van Diest, who was murdered while walking in an area beside where the trail was built on Halloween night 2011. The Taylor Jade Van Diest Memorial Trail will open Sunday at 11 a.m. at the north end of the trail, just off Pleasant Valley Road past Armstrong Elementary School. “She certainly would have used it as it would have made texting easier for her with the smooth surface to walk on,” chuckled Van Diest’s mom, Marie. “I don’t think she would have liked the attention it’s drawn to her.” The Van Diest family announced in August 2012, along with the City of Armstrong and the cooperation of Kelowna Pacific Railway, the creation of the trail. In less than a year, through volunteer work and generous community donations, the trail has been completed. Trees, bushes and hard, uneven gravel have been replaced by shrubs, plants, pavement and fencing. Signs, a bench and a memorial board are expected to be in place for Sunday’s opening and, in the near future, the Van Diest’s hope that lighting will be part of the trail. Taylor’s memorial trail is a 170-metre length of trail based on the existing conceptual Armstrong Spirit Trail Plan, a 1.3-kilometre trail through the city located within or adjacent to the railway rightof-way. The memorial trail is one of five sections identified in the plan, created by the Armstrong

Spallumcheen Active Communities committee in 2009. The Van Diest family has been responsible for the construction of the trail, including the management of donated goods and services. “We’re excited to open it,” said Marie. “Initially when the idea first went around through a petition, we knew then and there that the community was behind the idea of having a trail as a way of getting from point A to point B.” M&M Meat Shops will host a barbecue by donation at the trail opening.

t the age of five, my stage career began when I was cast as a Christmas tree in my kindergarten pageant. My mom made my costume from an old pillow case, painted to look like a tree. My debut was halted in its tracks, however, when I came down with chicken pox. I also missed going to see my first production of The Nutracker that year, thanks to the pesky pox. But cut to more years than I care to count, and there I was back on stage on Saturday night, sporting a yellow wig that would have inspired envy in Marge Simpson, false eyelashes and so much Katherine Mortimer dark foundation that I looked like I’d escaped from the spray tan booth in an episode of Toddlers &Tiaras. It was Accentz Dance Studio’s annual yearend show and as usual, studio director, dance teacher and creative genius Becky Martselos and her team of amazing teachers knocked it out of the park. How she outdoes herself every year, I have no idea. But she did it again. And somehow she roped me into going on stage as the stepmother in Cinderella. As a student in her adult ballet class, I had the choice of dancing on stage, which I have done in the past and which frankly terrifies me. Pirouettes and jetés are hard enough in the safety of the studio. But under bright lights in front of a packed house at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre? I would require an entire vat of wine to get out there. So when I told Becky I was happy to do something that involved more acting, less dancing, I figured I could just stand in the background and smile. Instead, as the oldest ballet student at the studio, I suppose it was a nobrainer to have me as the stepmother, or as the youngest ballet students referred to me, “the evil stepmother.” With fine direction from teacher Julie Ness and from Becky, I was all set. The wig and makeup

were complemented by a fabulous — and very hot and sweaty — costume borrowed from Powerhouse Theatre that required help to get in. I felt like I was on an episode of Downton Abbey, getting help from my lady’s maid just to get dressed, so thanks to my fellow adult ballet students for taking on the job of hooking and unhooking me for the many dress rehearsals and two shows. I was terrified of making an idiot of myself although I suppose that was a given, what with the bright yellow, three-foot high wig. Instead, I had the joy of making an idiot of myself while enjoying the magical camaraderie that comes with putting on a show. I have to give a special shout-out to my girls, my “stepdaughters,” Alyssa Imbeau and Mckinnley Massey, who are amazing dancers and terrific young women. They were so patient with this middle-aged broad, making sure I knew where I was supposed to be, gently nudging me onto the stage if I forgot my cue. I just want to say thank you and as you both head off to college and university next fall, I also want to say that if all Grade 12 students are as thoughtful, kind, and with great senses of humour as the two of you, then the future is safe. To see these kids — from toddlers to young adults — support each other, joke with each other and give it their all just warmed my heart. From the little ones who were so amused by my goofy costume, to the competitive students who make it look easy while executing not only difficult steps but also look like they’re having fun: thank you. You are a joy to watch and I wish I’d never given up those ballet classes when I was — let’s see, five, 11, and again at 18! I am in awe of your talent. That I got to be on stage with my daughter, who at eight played one of Cinderella’s bridesmaids, was simply the icing on a very sweet cake. The dance season is coming to an end, and I’m not sure if my feet can take another year of doing relevés and glissades. But I promise that when tickets go on sale for next year’s show, I will be first in line at the TicketSeller box office. And if Snow White is on the schedule for next year, I’m available to play the Evil Queen.

Quietly, over the past year, citizens of Armstrong have come together to beautify a particular area in town. Volunteers, friends, family and strangers have joined Armstrong’s Van Diest family in clearing an area between Pleasant Valley Road and Rosedale Avenue that was once full of brush, bramble, decaying trees and hard gravel on an uneven surface, and transforming it into a walking trail. It’s the area where, on Halloween night 2011, 18-yearold Taylor Van Diest was found severely injured after an attack by an assailant. Van Diest died early on Nov. 1, 2011 from her injuries. A man was arrested six months later and awaits trial for her murder. It was Taylor’s family who came up with the idea for the Taylor Jade Van Diest Memorial Trail, which officially opens at 11 a.m. Sunday. With help from the city, cooperation of Kelowna Pacific Railway which runs right beside the trail, and the generosity of businesses, community groups and volunteer labour, the trail is paved, has fencing, a memorial bench, memorial signs, plants, shrubs and, soon, lighting. The goal was to make the trail a safe place for everybody in the city to walk, and that has certainly been accomplished. It’s a wonderful addition to a city that puts a great emphasis on walking activities and green space. The public is welcome to attend the official opening. A barbecue by donation will be operated by M&M Meat Shops. Marie Van Diest, Taylor’s mom, believes her daughter would not have liked the attention drawn to her, but she would have liked the trail, she joked, as it would have made it easier for her to send text messages while walking. The trail is yet another example of how North Okanagan residents rally for one another.

Think of it as a polluter-pay fee

note that two letters recently looked at the proposed gas tax increase as stupid or caused by poor budget decisions. In reality, the extra cost (hopefully it will be adopted by the Union of B.C. Municipalities) should be classed as a polluter-pay fee. If you drive, you pollute, so pay up. And the funds realized go towards sidewalk and bike lanes infrastructure to encourage more of us towards healthier active transportation and less driving. Many of us drive just because we can. Portland, Ore. is a tourist and cyclist destination today because, many decades ago, their council implemented a similar fee. Vernon’s a super area for cycle and hike tourism. This extra money would push us faster towards attracting such tourists, and their money. Also, we need to look at the big picture. Oil prices can only go up because all of the cheap a response On June 7, The Morning Star's article, “Director insists no decisions made on genetic modification,” reports several mistakes and misleading statements used by Director Fairbairn to justify a lack of decision. The information below gives a factual history of how the resolution to become GMO-free was arrived at in Area D. Two years ago, Carla Vierke and Huguette Allen met with the directors of Area D and E to discuss the dangers of contamination by GMO crops in their communities. Both directors made it clear they could not take a stand unless it came from the community since their job was to represent the community. A request to the Regional District of North Okanagan to take a stand on GM crops that was supported by more than 100 letters sent to RDNO, some from large organizations such as Certified Organic Association of B.C., also resulted in no action being taken. Bee Safe volunteers then worked diligently at educating their communities about GMO. They showed films on the subject, opened an office in downtown Lumby that freely gave out information, held related events, gave food garden tours, printed infor-

mation in local media and sent out a free e-newsletter monthly. At the end of the two years, Bee Safe held a public meeting in Cherryville, Area E, followed by a vote that lasted one month. Then Bee Safe sent an invitation to every home in Area D inviting them to a similar meeting where a month-long vote was also launched. Weekly reminders were published in local papers letting people know ballot boxes were available in two local businesses as well as online. Director Foisy chose to stand by his word and support his community. He signed the resolution his community voted on before it got sent out to pertinent organizations throughout Canada. Director Fairbairn on the other hand is now choosing to not represent the will of his community by saying the vote was not representative, when in fact, voter turnout was the same as it is for most community issues. For example, voter turnout for Vernon's sports facilities was 18 per cent , yet was called “a healthy sample,” by chairperson Nicol. Therefore, we clarify that the vote was not held at a partisan meeting, but lasted one month. Ballot boxes were prominently placed at two local businesses and

and easy-to-extract oil is gone. We’ll have to pay more to travel and to buy food and goods that travelled to get here. There’ll be less money to go around and such decisions about where to spend will also affect local jobs. We don’t live in the 1980s so we can’t expect a large company to move in and provide high-paying jobs. We need to be resilient, create our own jobs, support local producers (low transport costs), and grow more stuff. We only have one planet, yet use up the resources of at least three planets. How long can this continue before there’s payback? How much of what we do is want versus need? Let’s have even more polluter-pay fees to encourage us to reduce our energy demands and live a simpler, healthier life. Julia Lissau voting online was also available. Bee Safe did not jump the gun. On the contrary, Bee Safe waited six weeks after closing of the vote before mailing out the resolution. The vote is representative and valid. Every ballot was double checked and although every member of families known to grow GM crops in the area voted against the resolution, 92.8 per cent voted for it. Never did Bee Safe represent the vote as coming from RDNO. On the contrary, Bee Safe made it very clear that it was doing all of this work because RDNO refused to take a stand. Director Macnabb's statement about not knowing where fact and opinion begin is surprising since he has been presented with countless scientifically supported references over the years that, as a director, he is expected to read and verify. To use personal choice as a reason to do nothing is illogical since the very reason to stop growing GM crops is precisely to stop the contamination that results from GM crops and that removes all personal choices. As the U.S. wheat exports are threatened by GM contamination, as Europe turns its back on GM corn, and as more and more GM

crops fail, it is disheartening to see that the two directors have not bothered understanding the facts about an issue that is so important and urgent. How many or what percentage are for private income. i.e. say a teacher, nurse, doctor or businesses that feel this is required versus those serving purely in a volunteer organization say coaching minor sports or volunteering at a care home? My point being there is a difference between needing a CRC to earn money for a living versus volunteering one's time for free. Is there not some way to differentiate between these? Of course there is. Should those who volunteer countless hours to assist others be saddled with a fee for donating their time? I think not. Surely the RCMP, along with our city reps, can find a way in differentiating between needed CRCs to earn money versus CRCs to volunteer their time and work

and ability to respond to what might be considered a minor drug possession.” Despite some concerns about implementation, Cyr, a former RCMP officer, supports drug-free zones. “It’s not a quick solution but we can alert people that drug dealing is going on and that we care about the situation. It’s better than doing nothing,” he said. Coun. Raquel Knust will work with other community partners about possibly establishing drug-free zones.

Municipalities conference,” said Dickie. “I also participated in some training exercises.” In terms of his wage, Dickie says considerable effort goes into representing residents and ensuring he understands key issues. “I’m working 20 to 30 hours a week,” he said. Details have also been released for employee remuneration. There were 14 staff who earned more than $75,000 in 2012. Leading the pack was Alberto De Feo, chief administrative officer, with $148,707 and expenses of $10,739. A total of $4.4 million was spent on all district employees while there was a total of $321,314 for expenses. Baker doesn’t believe taxpayers should be concerned about the level of staff salaries. “We do have a lean staff for the size of the municipality. in had a mental illness and was recovering in a Kamloops facility when he was hit by a car and died. “It’s kind of in memory of him.” Like Cole’s project explains, one of five Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime – that’s approximately 8,000 people in Vernon alone. Yet only one-third of the people who need mental health services in Canada get them. During Schratter’s battle with mental illness he had to battle something much more difficult – the stigma around mental illness. Again, like Cole’s project states, only 49 per cent of Canadians said they would socialize with someone who had a mental illness.

“It’s supporting a very good cause and it’s going to be a fun bike ride. Oh, and there’s food,” said Strilchuk. “I don’t really know a reason why not to go.” Along with getting all ages and abilities of riders out on their bikes, the funds raised will support the Vernon branch of Canadian Mental Health Association and carry Schratter’s message. “The more mental health is talked about the more the stigma likely will be removed,” said Cole’s dad Todd, a ride committee member. Former Vernon resident Michael Schratter was blown away when a boy from his hometown made Schratter the subject of his heritage fair project. Not only did the project help Schratter share his message about mental illness, it advanced to the regional and provincial levels, capturing several awards along the way and he was chosen to create a film about Schratter in a national competition. But for Cole Strilchuk, the Kidston student who featured Schratter in his project, what Schratter has accomplished is what is truly impressive. “Riding 40,000 kilometres around the world to raise awareness about the stigma of mental illness, that’s pretty amazing,” said 12-year-old Strilchuk. Schratter (who now lives in Vancouver) crossed 33 countries in 2010/11 on a mission to combat the stigma and raise funds for mental health. Now his journey, called Ride Don’t Hide, has morphed into a growing number of annual community rides. And Greater Vernon hosts its first Sunday at Coldstream Elementary, with the site opening at 8:30 a.m. The long route ride is at 9:30 a.m., with the easy route and mountain bike ride at 9:45 a.m.

Community support is vital to ensure nutritious meals are available for those in need. The Upper Room Mission is asking residents to donate hamburger, chicken or other forms of meat to keep up with the 250 meals served a day. “We have very little right now,” said Lisa Froom, general manager. “Our freezers are almost empty.” The alternative is for the mission to dip into limited financial resources and purchase meat but that would take away money needed for programs. “A huge part of our budget is reliant on donations,” said Froom, adding that she is confident residents will lend a hand. “A lot of people doing a little bit does a whole lot of good.” Donations of meat can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at 3403 27th Ave. For more information, call 250-549-1231.

Silver Star/BX fire safety urged Morning Star Staff

Wildfire season is here and the BX/Silver Star area is one of the more vulnerable in B.C. To help educate residents, there will be an open house at the Silver Star fire hall June 25 from 4 to 6 p.m.

“All agencies that would be involved with a fire incident in that area will be on hand with equipment and personnel to answer questions and give direction,” said Russ Mills, Silver Star fire chief.

Among the participants will be Silver Star Fire Rescue, Silver Star operations initial attack group, BX-Swan Lake Fire Rescue, Ministry of Forests, Vernon Search and Rescue, the RCMP, forestry fire interface consultants,

B.C. Hydro, Emergency Social Services and the Silver Star Fire Rescue Auxiliary. “It is very important for everyone living in the BX-Silver Star corridor to come to the information meeting,” said Bill Wacey, BX-Swan Lake fire chief “The recent fire that devastated the community of Slave Lake, Alta. and the fires in the past few years in Kelowna and Salmon Arm should act as a wake-up call to us all.” The BX-Swan Lake department has spent $70,000 on structure protection units, which can be deployed around rural homes. “One SPU that would cover two properties runs about $2,500. As well as the units we are building and buying, we have purchased a trailer to carry them all,” said Wacey. The Silver Star department is also purchasing SPU equipment. “Spending money on

protective equipment is all well and good, but we really need all of the people living in the BX-Silver Star corridor to play their part in fire proofing their properties and the area as a whole,” said Mills. “It is important that bans on open fires are respected and that people who smoke dispose of their cigarette butts indoors and inside their vehicles.” Silver Star Mountain Resort is due to open for summer business Saturday and then daily June 27, and the risk of wildfire is a priority. “We have mountain bikers, hikers and the elements to deal with,” said Brad Baker, with the resort. “Our operations staff are out on the mountain from almost sunup to sundown and are vigilant. We have some first response equipment consisting of a water tender and forestry pumps and hoses as well as bulldozers and excavators.”

A grand opening will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will include lessons with former PGA/LPGA tour pros Dick Zokol and AJ Eathorne and the launch of the Flightscope, 3D Doppler radar system There will also be a skills competition, a Taylormade equipment demo and a barbecue.

Summer is here and so are the mosquitoes. Some mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, a disease that is spread from infected birds to humans through mosquito bites. “We would like to remind residents to take steps both here at home and when travelling to avoid mosquito bites this summer,” said Jennifer Jeyes, communicable disease specialist with the Interior Health Authority. West Nile virus (WNv) was first detected in B.C., in the South Okanagan, during the summer of 2009. To date there have been three human cases of WNv acquired in B.C., all in the Okanagan. Last year, several parts of the Canada and the U.S. saw significant increases in virus activity. “While the risk of becoming seriously ill from WNv infection is low for many people, it is higher for some such as the elderly and those with compromised immune systems,” said Jeyes. “It is important to remember there are preventative steps that everyone can take in order to reduce the risk of infection.” Use mosquito repellent. Apply mosquito repellent to areas of exposed skin. Check the product label for instructions on proper use. Repellents containing DEET are safe for those over six months of age when used according to the directions on the label. DEET-free products are available, but may not provide long-lasting protection. Wear protective clothing. If you are in an area with lots of mosquitoes, wear loose fitting, light coloured, full-length pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Avoid perfumes, soaps, hair care products, and lotions with floral fragrances. Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn.

Tigers shade Raiders in showdown Morning Star Staff

It was a satisfying win, but it might not be enough to earn the Vernon Source For Sports Tigers top seed going into the Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League playoffs. The Tigers claimed a share of the league penthouse with the Kelowna Raiders after grounding them 12-11 in a Wednesday-night showdown at Kal Tire Place. The teams hold identical 11-3-1 records, but the Raiders hold a 22-point lead in goal differential (tiebreaker). Team Royal LePage Navy capped an undefeated season by winning all three U13 boys games in the North Okanagan Youth Soccer Association Vernon Cup. Navy, coached by Todd Wenger and Jeff Hoyland, brushed off the second-place Mangos 3-1 in the scorching sun Saturday afternoon at Marshall Field. Central fullback Jude Kronbauer, who was the McDonald’s Man of the Match, drilled a penalty shot top shelf to give the Mangos the halftime lead. Navy countered with the equalizer by Steven Benischek 10 minutes into the second half and then got the winner when Xander Sladen’s cross ricochetted off a defender past keeper Nick Mitchell. Sladen added insurance past relief keeper Garrett Birch with a few minutes remaining. Rylan Brown (2), Sladen (1+2), Sam Joly and Seb Wenger handled the offence in a 5-1 win over the shortstaffed White Pandas. The teams played five-on-five. The Red Menace gave Navy a scare Sunday afternoon before falling 6-2. Brandon Chai unleashed four snipes in a row, while Declan Stevenson and Wenger supplied singles. Cameron Bevan and Brett Hansen countered for the Reds, who struck the crossbar and just missed by inches on chances to tie it 2-2 in the first half. The Mangos, who struck the silver medal, blanked the Pandas 3-0 Sunday afternoon with Mitchell and Joe Bateman sharing the shutout. Mitchell netted the winner on a marvellous solo run early in the first half, while Cooper McGeough converted after a feed from Mitchell. Bateman fired the goal of the day on a late 50-yard run through a series of defenders. Bateman and Mitchell shared the Tim Hortons Man of the Match. Brendan Yakura was stellar in the Pandas’ net the first half. The Mangos got two gorgeous goals from Red Robin Man of the Match Birch and a single from McGeough in a 3-0 Sunday victory over the Red Menace. Birch’s sweetest snipe was a first-time volley off a McGeough corner. Birch and Mitchell split the clean sheet. The bronze-medalist Menace surprised the Pandas 3-1 Saturday for their first win of the season. Bevan (2) and Gavin Elliott handled the Menace scoring. Ty Cheyne and Blake Leupin shared the win. Baron Insurance, coached by Dawn Lemiski, went 2-1-1 to take silver behind Art Harrigan’s Instant Replay Sports in U18 boys. Mallette said it will be crucial to find the right mix of talent and character. “The whole culture in the room can sway a team either way,” he said. “Not necessarily are we going to take the best players because that doesn’t necessarily make the best team.” Along with Knights’ forward Matty Saharchuk, who signed with Vernon last week, Mallette has previously worked with returning forwards Logan Mick and TJ Dumonceaux. Determined to make up for a lacklustre performance last Friday in Kamloops, the Armstrong Shamrocks rebounded with a 12-6 win over the Kelowna Raiders Wednesday night. The Shamrocks did, however, give up the first goal of the Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League tilt to Pho Heng, who rung one in off the post for an early Kelowna lead. The Rocks replied with singles by Steve Clark, Jarrett Medhurst and Kriss Yargeau, who recently celebrated his 40th birthday. Camels reign in Stallions Morning Star Staff

The Hi-Pro Sportswear Camels rallied to tie the host Revelstoke Stallions 4-4 in rainy North Okanagan Soccer L eague action Wednesday night. The Camels grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a Bryan Schenker 25-yard, top-shelf volley, followed by a slick solo effort by Mwiza Singogo. Some poor clearances and sloppy play at the back by the Camels allowed Revelstoke to reel off four unanswered goals. Regrouping at half time, the Camels pinned Revelstoke and got a pair of closerange goals from Enzo Paal. Kids camp gearing up Morning Star Staff

An array of crafts, activities, games and trips lie ahead for Lumby, Cherryville and Lavington children. Lumby Summer Day Camp staff are geared up for the program, which is offered Monday to Friday at J.W. Inglis Elementary School. “It not only touches the lives of children and youth in the community but also supports parents who are working and grandparents who might have children visiting for the summer,” said Gay Jewitt, with the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre. “We look forward to filling this summer with events for kids and we are hoping to see a lot of new faces and welcome anyone in kindergarten up to Grade 6.” Whitevalley’s Summer Day Camp is yet another way the centre has impacted the community over the last

20 years. “Each day, a wide variety of people walk through the centre’s doors,” said Jewitt. “Sometimes it is someone looking for a resource or wondering where they might go if they needed a new birth certificate. Other times youth, seniors and families request counselling support.” The centre is in the midst of its Legacy Fund campaign, which is attempting to raise $800,000 for an endowment fund. lined why she is so concerned that there be proper spill response plans in place. That is one of the five conditions B.C. has put on garnering its support for the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. Gordon said other local issues Clark should be addressing include her government’s plan to allow health authorities to charge seniors for the use of wheelchairs in care facilities, skills training and the affordability and availability of quality daycare here. “These are can be seen as provincial issues but they are also issues here and need to be looked at in a local context,” said Gordon. During Clark’s news conference with Redford, she announced the creation of a ministerial working group to look t the issue of immigration, labour and skills training in both provinces. Gordon said the issue of open government is another she would like to hear Clark speak about, given that one of the first acts of Clark’s new Liberal government was to cut the open government committee in Victoria. “In this riding, (just under) 52 per cent of people didn’t vote (in the May 14 provincial election). It’s important to talk to the people who didn’t vote.” Meanwhile, Gordon reiterated her desire to debate Clark during this byelection campaign and noted while she has accepted an offer from the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce to attend a planned all-candidates debate here June 27, the premier has yet to commit. Clark has said she would like to participate in all-candidates debates here but does not know if she will have the time. She did not participate in any all-candidates debates in the Vancouver-Point Grey riding that she lost in the provincial election to the NDP’s David Eby.

Lake Country’s rich Japanese culture is being celebrated. Kakonosedai: A Century of Community marks the history of Japanese-Canadian pioneers at the Lake Country Heritage and Cultural Society. “The exhibition will open Aug. 10,” said Shannon Jorgenson, museum manager. “Coinciding with the exhibition opening is the museum’s book launch of Kakonosedai, with copies available at the museum after the opening.” The museum’s feature fundraiser, Centrepiece, will include Japanese performers, displays booths, and traditional food. And the museum will present a lecture at the Creekside Theatre in September. Kakonosedai tells the story of the first JapaneseCanadian pioneers and their experiences from 1899 to 1939. “This is a significant project for the museum and for the community as a whole,” said Duane Thomson, museum president. “The Japanese-Canadians were some of the earliest settlers of Lake Country and the opportunity to work with their children and grandchildren to present their history has been incredibly rewarding.” For more information, go to www.lakecountrymuseum.com.

Country artist tips his hat to the troops Julian Austin joins fellow rock-country boy Aaron Pritchett for a boot kicking night at Funtastic

Steeped in red and white, with tatted-up muscular arms and a Stetson placed firmly on his shaved head —in ode to the troops, perhaps— country artist Julian Austin is really a rocker at heart. The guy’s got a certain edge to him, especially heard in his music, but his heart is also as wide open as his home country is expansive. To call the New Brunswick native a proud Canadian is an understatement. His patriotism goes beyond these borders. For the past 20 years, he has performed to the troops overseas in war-torn countries and just about anywhere Canadian forces have military bases. Nicknamed GI Jules, Austin says his life’s path would have headed into serving this country as a soldier if not for his rebellious nature as a youth. “My dad was a vet and I wanted to become a soldier, but I got complacent. I was too busy being a punk and I went to jail a couple of times,” said the soon-to-turn 50 year old. Austin, who hits the Funtastic Music Festival stage next weekend, instead decided to pursue music. However, it wasn’t until the late-’80s/ early-’90s that he opened himself up to the country genre. “I hated country when I was younger. I was a rocker and into heavy metal,” he said. “It was guys like Tracy Lawrence, Alan Jackson and Dwight Yoakam that did it for

I grew to respect country. The fans are the best.” Now based just outside of Winnipeg, where his wife is originally from, Austin still peppers his sets with songs by Poison and White Snake, a way to re-live his glory days as a rocker. His latest album, One for One, even features a Queen cover of the 1978 tongue-in-cheek classic Fat Bottomed Girls. “Rock is still in my blood,” he said. “I am more alive, edgier, when I play the hard-edge stuff... There are not as many boundaries — you’re rock, you’re pop, you’re metal — I love

it all. I still write a lot of rock stuff in the studio. It take me back to my time in the ‘80s.” Austin says his music goes down especially well when he plays it to the troops. It was in 1994 when he was first asked to perform in a tour of then war-torn Bosnia. Since then he has been to Afghanistan three times as well as to South Asia. He has also played just about every military base in Canada, from CFS Alert in Nunavut to CFB Gagetown in his home province. “For an entertainer over there (in Afghanistan) it can get hairy. Things have

gotten a little close,” said Austin. “Putting on a show helps them get away from all the craziness.” With many of the soldiers in Afghanistan now returning home, Austin has curtailed his touring overseas, partly from government funding cuts to artists doing military tours, and has started working on helping those soldiers who have come back. Through his charity Canada Cares, which has received monetary support from Pennies for Patriotism, as well as support from other charities such as Riders and Cruisers of Alberta, Calgary’s Madison House and Leave The Streets Behind out of Sarnia Ont., Austin has brought attention to those soldiers with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and/or OSI (operational stress injury) who have lost their way and found themselves homeless. “I’ve lost a lot of my friends, where their reality is gone. Some are coming back and some haven’t,” he said. “We are working on locating homeless veterans across Canada and helping them get the help that they need and help them re-enter back into society so that they can live out healthy and productive lives.” Austin’s Funtastic performance, which aptly takes place at the Department of Defence Vernon army camp facility, will be a salute to the troops with a rockin’ night of country. “I am honoured to be a part of the show and festival,” said Austin, who performs just before fellow country rocker Aaron Pritchett on the Sunday night, June 30. “It’s going to a great night with Aaron... We both know how to give ‘er and connect with audiences.” The Funtastic Music Festival runs Friday, June 28 to Sunday, June 30, with a special separate Canada Day show July 1. (See story below.) Arts Major donation received by Caetani society Late artist Joan Heriot bequeaths $70,000 to the former home/property belonging to Sveva Caetani Morning Star Staff

The Caetani Cultural Centre Society has received a major donation of $70,000 in the form of a recent bequest from the late Vernon artist Joan Heriot. “We are very grateful for this impressive and much-needed bequest and also for the vote of confidence that we have received from such an outstanding, long-time member of the Greater Vernon cultural community,” said Patrick Allen, Caetani Cultural Centre Society president. The Caetani centre has also received several small works and prints from Heriot’s private collection. Heriot was a longtime friend and companion of the centre’s namesake, Sveva Caetani, sharing an interest in art and culture and a strong interest in community. She lived in the Caetani house for many

years in a suite on the second floor. Born in the Okanagan, and a zoologist by training, Heriot returned to Canada after many years in England, and turned her extensive talents towards capturing the vast Okanagan landscape through her pastel paintings. One of the studios located on the grounds of the Caetani property, above the courtyard, has been renovated and named after Heriot in her honour. “Joan was a strong supporter of Sveva’s vision of establishing the Caetani house and grounds as an artist-inresidence centre, where visiting and local artists could exchange ideas and skills and share this creativity with the local community,” said Allen. Heriot’s donation will be added to the original Caetani bequest, held by the Community Foundation of the

and very much ahead of their time,” said Allen, “As an artist, mentor and teacher, Sveva envisioned the use of the house and grounds as a place where artists and creative activities could thrive and flourish.” The board and staff of the Caetani centre have continued to adhere to Sveva’s vision by offering public programming and facilities. The past few years have seen increased activity at the centre, with expanded programming such as art trails, art markets, and a successful artist-inresidence program that in 2013 has gone international, said Allen. Several other projects have also been undertaken over the years to begin the upgrading and improvement of the house and grounds for

cultural and public use. However, more needs to be done. “Major upgrades still need to be completed within the house in order to begin to open it up for public use. These are often projects that are not visible to the naked eye, but yet so vitally important to achieving the goals of the society,” said Allen. The society has identified replacing and upgrading knob and tube wiring, the addition of a sprinkler system, window replacements, as well as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, insulation and plumbing upgrades as some the projects yet to be completed. There’s still life post-Oasis

Beady eye: Be

iam Gallagher’s voice is/was the face of modern British rock and Beady Eye supports this claim again. Gallagher and his guitar strumming Oasis alumni, Gem Archer and Andy Bell, have got their sonic identity intact. They’ve inherited some of that band’s image but they’ve psyched out some more with producer Dave Sitek’s expansive mood altering tweaking. Dean Gordon-Smith On their second album, BE, Beady Eye is Brit-rock all the way: strummy musings and dramatic chord-riff rockers share equal time. They’ve got that dark northern soul thing happening, and it isn’t a stretch to imagine gritty towns and solemn skies in the music, and crowded neon-lit clubs. BE indulges deeply in third-wave psychedelia: a Manchester sound frequented by The Stone Roses and the Verve. At times Beady Eye goes back to the source. Soon Comes Tomorrow evokes The Beatles and that band’s overcast tea-time tripping. The group has planted firm feet in the moody minor chord and atmospheric strings camp with confidence. Some doses of lad rock give the introspection some effective and well-placed context. Face the Crowd is a biting adrenalin burst of slashing guitars and a lordly Gallagher vocal proclaiming his

intent on the band’s sweaty concert stage. I’m Just Saying is another belter that’s sprinkled dramatically with 12-string guitar flourishes. The band indulges in atmospherics and the music is bathed in early classic rock experimentation and Fab Four pop arrangement. The moody layering of instruments (keys and effected guitars) that Sitek coaxes out of Beady Eye acts as a unifying bridge between the dynamics of slow strum songs and mid-tempo rockers. The lingering coda of Don’t Bother Me into the raga thrum of Shine a Light is hallucinogenic and progressively rocking in a startling fashion. Hopefully Beady Eye won’t let the weight of post-Oasis criticism and overly lofty expectations deter their path.
