Dawn Deydey, founder of Fernie’s innovative Community EcoGarden, has received national recognition for her incredible work engaging the community around food security and sustainability issues. Deydey is the recipient of the Earth Day Canada 2013 Individual Hometown Heroes Award, The Hometown Heroes Award Program, established in 2004, recognizes and celebrates environmental leaders who foster meaningful, long-term community awareness and action. As part of the prize Dawn also received a $10,000 award which she is donating to the Wildsight Elk Valley branch. “Dawn is extremely deserving of this award,” says Wildsight Executive Director John Bergenske. “She has worked tirelessly to make the Community EcoGarden the huge success that it is, and she is an inspiration to many.” As coordinator of the EcoGarden, Deydey designed, implemented and managed the garden initiative in its first four years. The garden is now coordinated by a volunteer advisory committee, in which Dawn continues to play an integral role, and consists of 24 garden plots, greenhouse and demonstration gardens that are used by community groups, schools and individuals. “I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had to work with impassioned committed volunteers to help sustainability sprout in

Dawn Deydey, founder of Fernie’s Community Eco-Garden, has won the Earth Day Canada 2013 Individual Hometown Heroes Award. Fernie,” says Deydey. “Growing the EcoGarden over the last 10 years has resulted in more than dirt under my fingernails – it constantly fills me with inspiration.” Deydey works with other volunteers to facilitate a wide range of events and activities at the EcoGarden, including educational programming for students, an Apple Share program to improve the utilization of locally grown apples, seed swaps, hands-on workshops about growing and preserving fresh foods, interactive gardening experiences for families and children, a school salad bar program that feeds hundreds of students daily and promotes the consumption of locally grown food, and composting and vermicomposting workshops. In addition to the EcoGarden, Deydey is involved with a variety of volunteer-based

environmental community projects. She is the Community Program Coordinator for Wildsight Elk Valley Branch, and the cofounder and coordinator of the popular Earth Day: Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show, an annual event that inspires the community to fuse trash and fashion by creating costumes from trash and recycled materials. Dawn is also the program coordinator for Beyond Recycling, a school-based environmental education program in schools throughout the East and West Kootenay. Deydey served on the Environment Sector Advisory Committee for the Columbia Basin Trust for seven years, and is a Director and a founding member of Advocates for Local Living, a group of volunteers that manages several action-oriented sustainability initiatives.

Severe rainstorm swells rivers and makes roads unpassable By Tom Fletcher

The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued a flood watch advisory Thursday after two days of heavy rain caused rivers in the West and East Kootenay region to

rise close to the tops of their banks. The Trans Canada Highway east of Golden was closed just after noon Thursday after multiple washouts and mudslides in Alberta. Parts of Calgary and

other southern Alberta communities were evacuated as a major low-pressure system dumped between 60 and 130 mm of rain through the Columbia and Kootenay regions. Highway 93 east of

Highway 3 near Sparwood on June 20. km north reduced the highway to single-lane traffic. Highway 31A was closed from New Denver to Kaslo due to a washout. Rain was not as heavy in the Thompson-Okanagan, with 20 to 70 cm recorded Wednesday and Thursday. The flood watch covers the West and East Kootenay Rivers and the smaller tributaries of the Upper and Lower

Columbia region. High streamflow warnings were maintained Thursday for the North Thompson, Salmon, Shuswap and Eagle Rivers, as well as Mission Creek in the Okanagan, the Kettle and Granby Rivers in the Boundary region and the Kicking Horse River in the Upper Columbia region.

Another Sam Steele Days has come and gone, with many in attendance feeling that this could be the best festivities in recent memory. From the parade and children’s activities to sports such as the annual baseball and soccer tournaments, logger sports, the strongman competition and bocce, there was something for everyone, including those who just liked to eat. The Kootenay Advertiser is proud to present these photo memories of Sam Steele Days 2013 as a snapshot of a place in time where the City of Cranbrook could gather together in common enjoyment and pride in where we live. Reduce your gas consumption by replacing your old energy offender with a new High Efficient Furnace! Rebates available for a limited time.

You’ve protected your investment by insuring your home and commercial buildings. Now you want to increase the square footage with an addition, which naturally increases your property value, which in turn affects your insurance coverage. Do you wait until the addition is done and then visit your insurance agent/ broker to review and adjust your coverage? Is your addition and

building covered while under construction? COC (Course of Construction insurance) is coverage put in place to increase insurance coverage to the value of the completed project. Before you begin your renovation, contact your insurance broker to find out what coverage is required, the cost and the time frame allowed. Some companies will give permission for renovations, some want to place a COC on the entire structure. So what can happen if you decide to “roll the dice” and not have your insurance coverage reviewed and revised if necessary? In this hypothetical situation, Tony and Eva Franks own a house (which is adequately insured) and decide to put on an addition for their personal yoga studio and don’t consider that this change to their home may affect their coverage. They hire Randy, a fellow that has done some home

At the end of the day, assuming no insurance coverage, here’s what is left: Tony and Eva have paid Randy $40,000 and have an outstanding invoice for $18,000; all for a yoga studio that doesn’t exist. Randy has not received any further payment from the Franks and hasn’t been able to pay his trades or suppliers. So, put your insurance in place before you start your project or roll the dice and hope you don’t get burnt…the choice is yours. And if the person or company working on your project can’t provide proof of CGL coverage, you can always choose to fire them. renovation projects for people they know; they don’t ask if he has a CGL (commercial general liability insurance) in place, nor does Randy ask the Franks about their coverage. The project progresses and is now to lock up (framed, roof on, windows and doors in, electrical and plumbing roughed in), insulation and drywall has been delivered and is waiting to be installed. Fire breaks out one night, completely destroying the addition. If the owners’ insurance company rules their home insurance is not adequate coverage with the new addition, or a COC should have been in place, there may not be any payout on the loss for the Franks. While Randy was not at fault for the fire, if he had been, there would be no insurance payout (not covered by a CGL) and Tony and Eva could possibly hold him personally liable and sue.

FORD (BC) LTD

Designed to be your truck Titan - one stylish workhorse

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Sharper exterior, brilliant interior and engine choice combinations that will thrill those who have specific needs for their new F-150. Overall: As near enough a full redesign gets in the full-size pickup market, the F-150 gets new styling, more technology and the return of the ultra-luxurious rangetopping Limited. Drivetrain: The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” V6 from the Flex; the 6.2-litre V8 from the off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models. Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 follows a simple pattern: update the features one year, revise the engines the next. Sprinkle in some new trims and technology occasionally. Rinse, repeat. For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharper-looking F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will bring even more customers through the

door. All models get new trim-specific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner. Available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by segmentfirst high-intensity-discharge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red and black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that’ll be more than enough since more than half of F-150’s sold come equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7-litre or the optional EcoBoost. Those wanting traditional V8 power are

spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. The sheer number of F-150 combinations is mind-boggling. Not including paint colors and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes (regular, extended SuperCab and four-door SuperCrew), not to mention both rear- and fourwheel-drive availability. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard on the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4, which is inspired by Ford’s participation in offroad desert racing. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. That’s a good idea, since there’s more nearly 30 centimetres of suspension travel in front and about 34 in back.

Nissan’s big, bold Titan has all the torque you need for the job or for fun. Overall: You’ll have to settle for a bit more content, revised packages and minor visual changes until a new Titan arrives. Drivetrain: There’s nothing quite like the exhaust rumble of the Titan’s 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8, but giving away 60 horsepower to the competition — and having a 16.1/10.9 (city/highway) l/100 km rating for 4x2 models? With nearly a decade virtually unchanged, the full-size Titan can be a hard sell, especially against the competition in the ultra-competitive pickup market. However, Titan makes an appeal to hard-working individuals with two frame lengths and two choices in bed length, ending at 8’2”. The bigger box is only offered on extended-cab models and not the four-door Titans. From

the outside, the Titan mimics the dimensions and attitude of its domestic rivals and attempts to match them under the hood with an allaluminum 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8. That might be well shy of what Dodge, GM and Toyota deliver, but perhaps more important than peak horsepower numbers is the torque, as in close to 400 pound-feet of it, most of which is available from just 2,500 rpm. That helps the Titan tow up to 4,320 kilograms. Two cab styles are offered: extended King Cab (with a pair of reverse opening rear access doors that swing 180 degrees); and a four-door Crew Cab. Both two- or four-wheeldrive versions are available. There’s enough interior room to hold five tall adults with front and rear legroom that’s practically identical. Interior amenities include a choice

of bench or bucket seats as well as adjustable foot pedals. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standard as well as side-impact and side-curtain airbags and rear-proximity sensors that alert you when your backup path is blocked. Back for more is the revised off-roadinspired PRO-4X model that comes with a lower final drive ratio, unique wheels wrapped in off-road rubber, additional skid plates to protect the Titan’s underbelly and electronic-locking rear differential, along with unique appearance upgrades inside and out. For 2013, a new audio system with a larger display and USB capability becomes standard on most models.

OBITUARY

Alaric: J. Lynn May 4, 1938June 15, 2013

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lynn Alaric on June 15, 2013 at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital. Lynn was surrounded by her loving family when she departed which is just how she lived her life. Born in Prince Rupert in 1938, Lynn spent her youth in Terrace BC and later lived throughout the province with her logger husband Howard Alaric whom she married in 1955. She raised six kids of her own and cared for many others in times of need. She had each of her children in a different town on life's way and finally settled down for good in the Kootenays in 1971. Lynn was a generous soul and with Howard they took in more than a few strays providing whatever they needed be it a ride, a bed, food or even gas for the drive. Theirs was a home that glowed with love and acceptance for all regardless of circumstance. She will be fondly remembered for her tough spirit and easy laughter having a sense of humor and fun that was infectious to all. From Sunday's touch football games, camping adventures, and casino stops, to traveling with family members. Lynn has left a lifetime of memories to all who were blessed enough to have spent time with her. In Lieu of a service Lynn would like all who knew her to raise a toast to life and family (preferably with a Guinness just like she fancied!)

Engineered to perform. Designed to ignite.

The 2013 Subaru BRZ reminds you of everything you love about driving: the engine pushing you into the back of the seat, the confident feeling of the brakes and the connection with the steering wheel as you guide the car through the turns. It all begins with the classic sports car configuration - front engine, rear-wheel drive - but this smoking hot 2+2 sports coupe carves its own path with an astonishingly low centre of gravity and a sport-tuned suspension system to produce razor-sharp handling. Add in the adrenaline-infused response of an all-new SUBARU BOXER engine and you’ve got all the elements needs for the truly fantastic driving experience. To top it all off, the Subaru BRZ is loaded with convenience and entertainment features - it’s value-packed and versatile enough for everyday driving.
