Stettler pitches in to assist flood victims RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter While local communities in Stettler, Castor and Bashaw have been unscathed by major flooding that has hit a widespread part of southern Alberta and Calgary, the Stettler hospital became home for many continuing-care patients from Drumheller this week. About 30 patients were relocated to Stettler last Saturday from Drumheller Health Centre as a precautionary measure, as the Red Deer River was threatening — though waters were receding early Monday morning. Stettler was one of many hospitals used as 19 acute-care patients and 86 continuingcare residents from Drumheller were relocated to other centres in central Alberta. Residents were expected to return to Drumheller by mid-week, as levels of rivers continue to recede and community residents were alllowed to re-enter their homes. “Our thoughts are with all of the
Albertans and emergency responders in these communities,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths, MLA for Battle Rive-Wainwright, in a news release. “We are doing everything we can to support local responses to the flooding and are prepared to assist wherever necessary,” said the former MLA for Castor and former teacher at Byemoor School, now representing a riding that includes Bashaw. Griffiths provided provincial leadership as the flood swept into Calgary and other areas that were evacuated. Many local businesses and organizations have initiated steps to support victims and communities. Heartland Youth Centre staged a bake sale Monday morning and raised $941 for the flood victims in High River, Calgary and elsewhere. Boston Pizza in Stettler has started to accept donations of blankets, clothing and non-perishable food items. Sobeys and Wal-Mart also welcome donations, along with ATB Financial and other local businesses.

Stettler Town and Country museum is ready to celebrate its 40th anniversary and Canada Day with many events planned for the July 1 celebration on Monday.

Donalda, Stettler, Big Valley and Delburne are among the central Alberta communities planning to celebrate Canada Day with festivities this Monday, July 1. Donalda After the community commemorates the Donalda School centennial from Friday through Sunday, Donalda’s focus shifts to Canada’s 146th birthday on July 1. “Most of the (Canada Day) activities will be held at Lamp Park,” said Darlene Tantrum of Donalda Community Promotions. Festivities begin with a pancake break-
fast at Sharon Lutheran Church from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Colourful floats and entries are expected to headline the parade downtown at 11 a.m. The Donalda Light Riders Drill Team will kick off entertainment that runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Entertainment includes Bashaw Sunshine Cloggers and a country market at the Donalda Community Hall. The lunch will be served by Donalda School parent council. Children’s fun will include bounce house, coin, pit and tattoos. Steak supper is on the menu at 6 p.m., with a live auction at 8 p.m., while the day ends with fireworks. Big Valley Fun for the entirefamily and student art are featured in the
Canada Day festivities in Big Valley. Art from grades 3 and 4 students will be on display at Big Valley train station after 1 p.m. “Each year, we try to use a theme or two that reflects something about Canada, and our accomplishments as a nation or our people,” said Linda Stillinger. “This year, we have two themes — one will be the community and the other will be music made in Canada.” Face-painting and a boxcar will also be open, with a display of historic photos. The steam train is set to arrive at 1 p.m., with ceremonies slated for 2:15 p.m. For the evening, a barbecue and children’s games are scheduled for the ball diamond from 5:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the popular evening fireworks.
Stettler Canada Day events at West Stettler Park feature music by local band Loose Change, beginning at 8 p.m. Birthday cake and fireworks are also set for the evening, which concludes with fireworks after 10 p.m. Delburne Delburne has at least 100 reasons to celebrate its centennial party, which runs from Saturday through Monday. Canada Day events include a breakfast, centennial parade, ball games, beer gardens, a tractor pull, children’s activities, gymkhana events and a vintage machinery display. It’s a jam-packed weekend in Delburne, with school tours, meals, markets, sports and dances on tap for a homecoming weekend in the community.
Canada Day LES STULBERG Independent reporter Stettler Town and Country Museum is in a celebratory mood. It will be hosting its annual Canada Day celebration, plus marking its 40th anniversary July 1, which is Monday. Chantel Heier, assistant curator and one of the three summer students at the museum, outlined the Canada Day program. “There may be a few surprises,” she said. “We are still working on a few things.” Heier said the museum is offering free admission throughout the day, during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. She said the event kicks off with a pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Free speeder rides go all day. The singing of O Canada and the serving of the
40th anniversary cake is scheduled for 2 p.m. The children’s games will begin immediately after. Heier said a concession booth will be open on the grounds after the breakfast is over. Curator Wilda Gibbons reflected on the museum’s 40-year history. She said the museum received its charter in 1973 and the founding president was Ken Simon. “There were lots of volunteers and they put a lot of work into establishing the museum,” Gibbons said. Those efforts laid the ground work for today’s museum, deemed to be the fifth largest in Alberta. The museum has 26 buildings including a CN train station, courthouse, school, church, post office and general store, harness shop and pioneer homes, each displaying thousands of period artifacts.

Independent reporter Clearview School Division honoured many deserving individuals at its annual Recognition Night on Wednesday evening at the Stettler Community Hall. Coronation School’s “3-Day Weekend,” along with music teacher Dan Kinakin, provided the lively after-dinner entertainment. The band got its start in a high school option class. Dual winners of the Clearview Award of Merit were recognized at the gala. The award recognizes national or international achievement. Recipient Charlene Anderson, a Halkirk native and graduate of Gus Wetter School, was appointed a federal judge in the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in February. Anderson said she was “very proud” of her rural roots and home-
town of Halkirk and linked her success to “small-town values.” She said her appointment came, “not in spite of my small-town background, but because of it.” The second recipient, Tricia Helfer, was not present. Her award was accepted by her parents Dennis and Elaine Helfer. Tricia gained international fame, both as a super-model and television and big-screen actress. She grew up on a farm at Donalda and received her education in Donalda and Stettler. Tricia responded by a letter emailed from Newfoundland, where she was currently visiting, and read by her mother. She said she “felt it fitting to actually be in Canada to accept her award.” Helfer credited her rural upbringing and schooling to her success and said she was “fortunate to grow-up in the community she did, with the
people she did.” She said her rural background “kept her grounded” and “gave her the strength to push forward and succeed.” A special tribute was given to Dr. Bill Baergen, former Clearview superintendent and trustee who died in April, by Clearview school board chairman Ken Checkel. Checkel said Baergen was “a smart man” who was “very inspiring.” “He discriminated against no one and strived to give everyone a good education.” Checkel presented Baergen’s wife Donna with a “small token of appreciation and esteem” on behalf of the Clearview School Division. Leslie Ortman was the only retiree in the list of honourees. She is retiring after a 33-year teaching career at Erskine School. Continued on Page A3

More than 50 men participated in “Walk a mile in her shoes” on Sunday at West Stettler Park, including these men strutting their stuff in four-inch high heels.
Stettler-area men step into worthy fundraiser LES STULBERG Independent reporter Stettler’s first “Walk a mile in her shoes” fundraising and awareness campaign raised a whopping $26,000 to far surpass organizers’ goals. The out-pouring of support from the community surprised and pleased event chair Lindsey Bromley. “There was phenomenal support from the community, it far exceeded our expectations,” Bromley said. “ We w e r e h o p i n g t o r a i s e $10,000 in our first year.” More than 50 area men slipped into four-inch red high heel shoes and walked, ran, strutted or limped their way around West Stettler Park
on Sunday afternoon. Some had more difficulty than others manoeuvring the course. A couple of innovative guys taped their shoes on. While some men complained of aching arches and calves, one said, “Everything hurts from the hips down.” The pledges they gathered are to support breaking the cycle of family violence. The event, blessed with good weather, was of a festive nature. Families gathered at the park to cheer on the men in heels, who seemed to be having fun with the event. A few, not only wore high heels, but also wore dresses. One of the women in the crowd commented, “Some of those guys
have better legs than I do.” The Domino band entertained the crowd with their country music tunes after the male members of the band made the walk in heels too. The Kinettes and Kinsmen, along with local sponsors, hosted a complementary barbecue to keep the event-goers well fed. Prizes were handed out to recognize some of the top walkers. Stettler teacher Brett Nixon received the award for most pledges. He gathered $2,000 in pledges. Justin Tanner was acclaimed to be the best dressed. A dress and wig completed his ensemble. Sixteen-year-old Steven Teasdale was the youngest walker registered carrying pledges and the oldest walker was Fraser Beebe.

Flood fiasco a failure to learn lesson

By MARY-ANN BARR Black Press columnist A flood mitigation report done for the Alberta government after severe flooding in 2005 states that it would cost $306 million in 54 municipalities to implement all the recommendations. That’s a lot of money. On Monday, Premier Alison Redford announced $1 billion in emergency funding to begin the long recovery process from last week’s unprecedented flooding. That’s a lot more money. We can be sure it won’t be enough. This will by no means be the final tally on the flood damages, which were suffered most dramatically in Calgary and High River. Albertans will rally, and all this tragedy and destruction will one day come to pass — until the next time. And that’s what the 2006 Provincial Flood Mitigation Report: Consultation and Recommendations was intended to help with — the next time. The flood mitigation report contains 18 recommendations. It was released just over a year ago, on a Friday before the August long weekend. That’s six years from the time it was completed to the time it was released. Anyone who has ever paid attention, or worked in media, knows of the offensive practice of governments often releasing controversial information late in the day, and often late in the week, and that often those who should speak to the matter are “gone for the day.” More offensive, though, is when government fails to act, for the most part or at all, on its own recommendations that are in the public interest. The recent huge rainfalls coming as they did, dumping so much rain into the mountains and foothills, it was evident we were in for some bad weather and high water. But no one foresaw how quickly that water would come down rivers, causing historical overland flooding. For the most part, Red Deer dodged that bullet, and we are fortunate now to be able to turn our attention to helping other Albertans south of us. We’ll never know how implementation of the recommendations from the flood mitigation report might have reduced damages from this flooding disaster of 2013, but surely they would had some positive impact. Here are some of the report’s commonsense recommendations: — A notification system be established that will inform any potential buyer that the property is located within a designated flood risk area. — Disaster Recovery Regulations be amended to prohibit disaster recovery payments for new inappropriate development in flood risk areas. — (Alberta Environment) make historic flood information available to the public on its website. Suitable information would include historic high-water elevations, flood risk reports, and flood photography. — The flood mitigation strategy include a cessation of the sale of Crown lands in known flood risk areas. — The 2005 overland flooding, which had a bigger impact of Red Deer than last week’s waters, was then the worst natural disaster in Alberta. The province paid out $165 million in disaster service payments. In total, about $400 million in damage occurred. Flooding tends to be the most costly and far-reaching natural disaster. Thus, it makes sense that flood mitigation should be a priority but the Alberta government’s response by way of implementation to its own flood mitigation report has been minimal. ‘There are no little things’ A pastor visiting in New Orleans was standing in line at a convenience store. He noticed that the family ahead of him couldn’t pay for the items they’d selected. The pastor touched the man’s shoulder and said, “Don’t turn around. Just take this money from my hand to buy your groceries.” The man complied, paid for the groceries and left without looking back. Nine years later, the same pastor was invited back to New Orleans as a guest speaker. Following his sermon he greeted people at the door. One man stayed behind and asked the pastor if he could share his testimony with him. The pastor replied, “I’d love to hear how you gave your life to Jesus.” The man explained that years earlier he, his wife and their child were destitute. They’d lost their jobs, their money was gone and they were living in their car. In despair, they’d determined to commit suicide by driving off a cliff. However, they felt they should feed their little boy before he died with them. They entered a convenience store, picked up a few simple snacks and got in the checkout line. When their turn came, they discovered they didn’t have enough money to pay. But at that moment a man behind them asked him not to look back, but to take some money from his hand. The man also told him and his family, “Jesus loves you.” They left the store, drove back to the cliff and wept for 4 hours. They couldn’t go through with their suicide plan. Driving away from the cliff, they saw a church sign that said, “Jesus loves you.” The following Sunday, they attended that church and both the man and

By this time, both men had tears in their eyes as the man told the pastor, “The moment you began speaking I recognized your voice! You are that kind man from the convenience store nine years ago.” We often feel that our efforts and contributions are miniscule…perhaps even meaningless. But this story underscores the fact that not only are small things meaningful, but they often have marvelous outcomes. Jesus said, “If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded” (Mark 9:41). In one of His parables He added, “’Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ (Matthew 25:23). “When I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things, I’m tempted to think there are no little things.” Bruce Barton

‘A place we’re proud to call home’ By Rick Strankman, MLA for DrumhellerStettler The catastrophic flooding that is unfolding in Alberta has been met with an overwhelming response from ordinary and extraordinary Albertans across the province. This is especially evident in the town of Drumheller where the flooding tragedy was unfolding Sunday. As Drumheller evacuated nearly 3,300 people, the amazing spirit of the people has risen above the flood waters. Volunt e e r s h ave b e e n wo r k ing around the clock in an attempt to stem the tide of the flood waters while others have taken in friends and strangers in their time of need. groups of people filling and delivering sand bags through the valley have become commonplace. T h e h e av y l i f t i n g h a s been done with a smile and a genuine want to help friends, neighbours and complete strangers, is what makes Alberta a place we all are proud to call home. F i r e fi g h t e r s , P o l i c e , EMS, and ordinary citizens have all pulled together in an attempt to mitigate the potential flood danger, damage and effect this will no doubt have in the Drumheller Valley. Each and every one of them is to be commended for their courage in the face of imminent danger and personal loss. The stories of volunteers working diligently to help is inspiring, in s p i t e o f b e i n g eva c u -
e e s t h e m s e l ve s . S o m e have worked around the clock doing backbreaking work for nothing but self-satisfaction. Simple words cannot describe the fortitude being shown by the people of Drumheller and area that have stepped up to the plate in its greatest time of need. M a y o r T e r r y Ye men and the Drumheller town council have been working tirelessly to coordinate resources and personnel to deal with the circumstances that t h r e a t e n t h e l ive s a n d property of the people of Drumheller. Their regular communications with local media and through social media has resulted in a public that is informed a n d i t ’s a n e ff o r t t h a t is an example of how it
should be done. In the following weeks across Alberta there is a lot of work to be done cleaning up and rebuilding for those that will be dealing with the devastation that follows this type of disaster. Please remember all of those affected by these tragedies unfolding throughout the province, in your thoughts and prayers. In the days to come, donations of money, c l o t h i n g a n d o t h e r essentials will undoubtedly be in great demand, and I encourage everyone to inquire with your local authorities to coordinate your donations with those most in need. Be proud Drumheller and all of Alberta, you have once again proven that this is the greatest place to live on earth.

Communities flooded with support By Richard Froese Independent columnist No doubt, our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to all the people displaced and lives disrupted by the major flood in Calgary and southern parts east to Medicine Hat and west to the Rocky Mountains. While new reports have showed that people are still in disbelief and often use the word “surreal”, it’s definitely real. But would each of us be ready if the call came to evacuate our homes on a moment’s notice or even an hour or two? Just looking around our communities, it seems these parts of the province are unscathed. But don’t think that your home town is not vulnerable to any disaster by an act of God. H ow wo u l d e a c h o f us cope with the emergency and results of a major flood, wildfire, or tornado or other weather disaster? The biggest grief would likely be to return to your home and everything or a major part of your belongings are damaged or destroyed. Although this has become the biggest and most far-reaching flood in Alberta history, these types of damaging and displacing weather with
only become more frequent in the future, according to weather experts. Wi t h t h e e x t e n s i v e damage and high value of property, land and belongings, insurance rates will be going up. Knowing this, it may be better to live just simple and with the basics. If you know that your home is susceptible to future disaster and you c o u l d fa c e t h e l o s s o f that home with all you beloved belongings, why not live without such as luxurious lifestyle. Life is more important
than stuff. Eventually all this stuff will end up in a garbage heap somewhere. Through all this turmoil of raging rivers and major clean-up, Albertans are certainly showing their neighbourly and community spirit. Residents are extending a helping hand to neighbours and other in their own towns and people in towns not affected are reaching out with support and fundraising. Many local businesses and organizations have already set up funds or accounts or launched
fundraising to support victims to recover and re-establish themselves. If and when local communities are faced with weather disasters where residents are located, neighbours all over the province will definitely aid us as much as local residents will continue to extend their generous hearts. R e m e m b e r, i n o u r c o m m u n i t i e s , r eg i o n s , provinces and country, we are all one family and support each other in all times of crisis. T h a t ’s t h e A l b e r t a spirit.

Pow Wow commemorates local native heritage RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter One day after National Aboriginal Day, a small group of local Natives gathered for the first annual Big Valley Pow Wow last Saturday. Planned as a major event to promote the culture in the area, severed flooding in parts of Calgary and southern areas of the province prevented many people, including dancers and drummers from travelling to the central community. “We hope to continue this as an annual event,” said Anthony Day Chief of the Big Valley Eagle Whistle Society, which organized the event. “We want to promote our Native culture and to help build bridges between different cultures and to build friendship and under-
standing.” Day Chief is one of five local families in the Kainai Nation, part of the Blackfoot Confederation, with others in the Peigan community in Rocket, Alberta, Siksika Nation in Gleichen and Sarcee First Nation in Calgary and Glenmore. “Western culture is a big part of the community in the Big Valley and Stettler area and we want to promote First Nations,” , said Dave Lilly of the Metis First Nation and community support worker in the region and volunteer pastor for the Metis. “Without Indians, there would be now cowboys,” Lilly said, noting the term Indians is commonly used among Aboriginal peoples. People immersed in the culture with authentic First Nations food such as bannock burgers, fried bread, Indian popcorn and Indian tacos.

Stettler teams net provincial berths Four teams from Stettler have qualified for the Alberta Tier 4 rural soccer championships, and two of them go in as gold-medallists in the Central Alberta provincial playdowns. The Stettler under-18 boys and under-12 boys each won the regional-champion ticket in their respective weekend tournaments at Stettler. The under-18 team rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Rimbey 5-2 in Sunday’s championship game at the Stettler Sports Park. Stettler is bound for the provincials July 5-7 in Lacombe. The top-seeded Stettler Snipers (Yellow) under-12 boys beat Camrose-P FC 3-1 in their final to earn a berth in the provincials July 5-7 at Three Hills. On the same weekend, two other Stettler clubs host provincial championship tournaments. They’re the under-18 girls, who lost 4-1 to Lacombe in the regional-qualifier final Sunday at Stettler, and the under-16 boys, who lost both of their weekend games in the regional playdowns. Before the under-18 girls host Lacombe and other provincial qualifiers, Stettler visits Lacombe tonight for their league championship game. In the provincial playdowns at Stettler fields: UNDER-18 BOYS — Before the comeback win over Rimbey in the final, Stettler posted two wins and a tie in preliminary play. Stettler edged Lacombe — the provincial host — and Sylvan Lake, both by 2-1 counts, and tied Rimbey 3-3. UNDER-18 GIRLS — Stettler reached the final after beating Rimbey 4-2 and tying Rocky Mountain House 3-3. UNDER-16 BOYS — Stettler lost 4-0 to Rocky Mountain House on Sunday after falling 7-1 to Lacombe, which returns to Stettler for the provincials later next week. In the regional final, Lacombe topped Ponoka 5-1. UNDER-16 GIRLS — Stettler lost three games — 2-1 to Ponoka and Lacombe and 3-1 to Rocky Mountain House. Ponoka blanked Lacombe 1-0 in the final. Both of those teams advance to the provincials July 5-7 at Ponoka. UNDER-14 BOYS — In the B Division, Stettler placed third after losing 5-2 to Ponoka, tying Rocky Mountain House 2-2 and blanking Rimbey 3-0. In the final, Ponoka edged Rocky 1-0 to earn a berth in the under-14 provincials, set for July 5-7 at Edson. UNDER-14 GIRLS — In B Division play, Stettler lost 9-1 Camrose, 5-1 to Rimbey and 4-2 to Lacombe. Rimbey took the B title with a 1-0 win over Camrose. On the A side, Sylvan Lake doubled the Camrose Predators 4-2 to qualify for the under-14 provincials at Edson. UNDER-12 BOYS — En route to their gold-medal finish, the Stettler Snipers defeated the Stettler Spartans 3-1 and Sylvan Lake 6-1. In their other game, the Spartans lost 3-2 to Camrose-P FC.

Vipers swing Round 2 The bantam AA competitive Stettler Vipers split a pair of weekend road games in Baseball Alberta second-round action. The Vipers doubled Okotoks Outlaws Orange 16-8 on Saturday in Strathmore, after dropping a 5-4 decision to the host Acme Red Sox earlier in the day. Last week, Stettler won and lost home games. The Vipers fell 10-8 against the league-leading and unbeaten Camrose Cougars Royal (7-0) on Wednesday, two nights after clubbing the Red Deer Braves 18-2.
The Vipers, a first-year team made up of players from Stettler, Big Valley, Castor and Coronation, posted a 3-4 record in the second round of provincial tiering play. Now slotted in Tier 2 for Round 3, Stettler is back on the road for the next two weekends. This Saturday, the Vipers face Leduc and Okotoks at Leduc at noon and 3 p.m., respectively. Next weekend, Stettler meets the Edmonton Angels on July 7 in 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. games at Edmonton (Millwoods).

Stettler Rotary Club hosts farmers’ appreciation night L ES S TULBERG Independent reporter The Stettler Rotary Club hosted its 57th annual farmers’ appreciation night at the Stettler Community Hall on Monday evening. Rotarian Peter Boys said the long-running event continues to honour the valuable contributions that farmers make to the
Stettler community. Members of the farming community were the guests of the Rotarians and farm-related business sponsors. The event is just one of many community-support projects Rotarians carry out each year. Stettler Coun. Steve Wildeboer and county reeve Wayne Nixon brought greetings from the town and county,
respectively. Wildeboer said farmers work hard and put in long hours. He urged the farm guests to “enjoy the meal of food that came from your hands.” “Rural people have an insurmountable spirit,” Nixon said. “For the past 100plus years farmers and ranchers have battled and worked with nature — through flood and
drought, through hail and grasshoppers, through wind and snow — and have emerged victorious.” Guest speaker for the evening was Simone Demers Collins, the market, development and promotion co-ordinator with the Alberta Canola Producers Commission. She delivered interesting facts on canola production in Alberta.
More than 15,000 Alberta farmers grow canola on 5.5 million acres. Alberta canola farmers produce the highest yield in Canada with an average of 36.3 bushels per acre. Canada produces 40 per cent of the world canola production, with Japan being the biggest customer. Demers Collins said canola ranks third in vegetable oil usage.
She said being low in saturated fats makes it the healthier choice. “The Calgary Stampede was the first major fair to go trans-fat free.” Since 2006, vendors cooking food on Stampede grounds must use canola oil, which has a variety of uses. Human food, livestock feed, biofuel, industrial, cosmetics and hand-cleaner products are among those.

Grub from Erskine Grill sizzles with style Erskine Grill is more than a restaurant with home-cooked meals. Located on Highway 835, just at the corner of Highway 12, the restaurant and store serves a variety of food to eat in or take out. “We serve breakfast all day, and have everything for breakfast,” said Zina Lomeland, who has owned the business for seven years with her husband Egil. He has extensive experience operating Subway restaurants in Stettler and elsewhere in Alberta. “We make our own bread and sub buns daily and people love our bread,” she said. French toast, omelettes, pancakes and eggs are all part of the breakfast menu served daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. “We are very flexible for what our customers want,” Zina said. Burgers, french fries, ribs, submarine sandwiches, chicken and fish are on the
rest of the menu, as is soup of the day. On the way to Buffalo Lake tourist areas to the north, the store is a good stop to pick up a variety of bread and baking, ice cream and cones, drinks and juice, milk products, chocolate bars, chips, firewood, lottery tickets and fireworks. “During the summer, we get lots of people on their way to the lake from Calgary,” Zina said. “We also get lots of local people who come to the restaurant and store.” Since they bought the business seven years ago, the couple has expanded the convenience store and removed the fuel pumps about five years ago. “About 90 per cent of our customers are from the oilfield, and they were asking for a restaurant,” Zina said. “They wanted more variety — and then we started to serve hot food such as breakfast.” — Richard Froese

RICHARDS March 30, 1999 - June 18, 2013 Jaden was born March 30, 1999 in Augusta, Georgia to a beautiful woman who blessed us all when she chose us to be his family. He really was the most wanted child ever. Home for Jaden was Stettler, Alberta and because of his quirky sense of humor and selfless nature he changed our corner of the world forever. With his first big catch fishing he found a way to get peace and time for himself, but his spotlight was on the ice. With pride he wore #8. Jaden’s passion for hockey could be seen in the way he played and the amount of time he spent in the penalty box. Both a growing boy and a young man, Jaden enjoyed playing games with other kids just as much as he enjoyed knowing he was accepted as an older kid. He touched the lives of so many people in so many ways. The time we had to spend with Jaden was shorter than we wanted, but we are forever thankful for every minute of our 14 years we had with him. Miss you buddy! Jaden is survived by his mother Dianna Richards, his father Dick Richards; brothers and sisters: Nova (Ryan), Devon (Zazie), Lyndon (Barrett), Luke, Tyson and Kenya; grandfather Ron Richards and grandmother Marilyn Fulton; numerous other relatives and many friends. Reunited with his grandmother Carol Richards and grandfather Ernie Fulton. Funeral service was held at Lake View Cemetery on June 25, 2013 with Rev. Karl Faltin officiating. A time of fellowship and a luncheon was held at the Multi Purpose Room at the Stettler Recreation Centre following the graveside service. Memorial donations may be made in Jayden’s name to STARS or to the Epilepsy Association of Alberta. Hopefully, the rain will stop soon and things will start getting back to normal quickly. Sun,Sun come out quickly and start drying things back to normal. It’s hard to believe this school year is finished again, for another school year, where did the time go? Today (June 26) is the last day of school, so here’s hoping everyone will have a fun and relaxing summer months. Also to the Grade 5 students, you are going to be missed and would like to wish you all the very best in your future education in Stettler School. On this coming Sunday, June 30, a special person in Botha area is celebrating one important event.
Cody Morris is celebrating his birthday, so hope you have a great day. Cody! Happy Birthday. Bingo evening happens again on Tuesday, July 9, starting at 7:15 p.m. So make sure you come on out to the Botha Seniors’ Centre, ... who knows, you could be the next big winner. After this Sunday, June 30, church services will not be held for the month of July as Reverend Susan Bowyer will be away. Church services will start up again on Thursday, Aug. 8, starting at 7 p.m.. So please make sure you mark this date on your calenders. Thursday evening church services will continue at 7 p.m. for the months of August and September. We had to reroute our road trip down to Southern Alberta and by Friday afternoon the only road open to get south was the 36. Driving back home Sunday night, Highway 24 crossing the
Bow River finally opened up. As we crossed the Bow River, the campground was still under water and picnic tables and debris were lodged in the tops of the bushes. The river was still quite high and crews were still monitoring it. It’s amazing how quick and devastating Mother Nature can be. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the devastation. Stettler residents Bob and Dorothy Diprose celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a gathering at the Botha Seniors’ Centre on Saturday. The couple were married in Drumheller on June 23, 1948 and farmed in the Verdant Valley and Botha communities before retiring to Stettler.

RUMSEY RECORD By Patty Steen Well, is everyone wet now? It has been a beautiful spring from the farmers’ point of view. I know that the bits of sunshine that we have received have been very welcome. I could actually watch my garden grow on Saturday and Sunday. Pat Holowath hosted June 17’s birthday club at St. Mary’s Lodge. There were seven members celebrating: Dave Wagstaff, Elma Tolman, Oscar Nelson, Isabell Tetz, Beryl
Gelinas, Everna Corry and Willy Tensen. Jill Brodie was over putting on a show with her dogs and ducks; very impressive, Jill. Also, for those who didn’t feel like going outside Ray was providing some foot tapping music inside. It was a very nice day for the residents. Kendra Kiemele will be hosting in the month of July. On June 13, the AHA (Alberta Horticultural Association) Conference was held at the Red Deer Legion. It was hosted by the Alberta Gladiolia and Dahlia
Societies. Humorous and informative speakers presented various ideas on growing glads and dahlias, also, the introduction of many new varieties. Lorne and Marilyn McArthur hosted the conference guests at their spacious landscaped gardens featuring trail Dahlias from all over the world growing under mesh protection. It was a wonderful tour and a delightful end to an enjoyable day. They served a delicious luncheon topped off by Marilyn’s out-of-this-world Saskatoon Pie.
Don’t forget about the Rumsey Sports days to be held on July 19, 20 and 21. Derek Krywcum and Doug Hodge will be taking entries for the tournament, so if you are interested in getting a team in, phone them early as it usually fills up quickly. There is lots to look forward to; the concession will be running as usual, with the proceeds going towards Morrin Grad Class of 2014; beer gardens down by the diamonds, free camping, supper on Saturday
night by Country Cookers with a dance to follow — team entries include admission to dance — everyone else is $5.00; pancake breakfasts both mornings to get you going.; and, of course, lots of ball games to watch. Hope to see you there. The children will be “released” from the confines of the classrooms by the end of this week and will be busy with summertime activities. I hope all of you have a wonderful summer in the sunshine — may it only rain at night!
GADSBY—WESTWOODS By Paulette Heer James Shepherd, working for the Ross Knight chuckwagon outfit, was among the crews that had to evacuate High River. They had 30 minutes to pack up and head out to higher ground. Velvet Nickerson heard from her parents, near Fairmont, that they were close to evacuation when their local bridge lifted and shifted. Pictures of their picnic table, (normally 20 feet above the river) was showing only the very top. Velvet’s brother Ben was one of three people left in a mine shaft near Sparwood. Velvet later got word that all were safe!
The late Peter Taggart’s step daughter Donna lives close to the downtown area of Calgary and came home to Stettler to stay with her mother, Florence, bringing a camera full of pictures of Calgary. Frank and Eleanor dahren are safe at home after travelling through the flood area, fighting detours and bridges out to get to grandson Tanner Walgenbach and bride elect Megan’s wedding near lambrick Alberta in “The Gap.” The wedding was moved to dry ground at their residence and it was a beautiful day on Saturday for them. The groom and groomsmen; then the bridemaids came in a horse and wagon, followed by the bride
and step father on horseback. Eleanor and Frank were among the guests that enjoyed their stay in one of the cabins on Tanner andMegan’s property that are used for hunters and trail riders. Of the 300 invited guests, including parents Cecil and Pat Walgenbach and many more relatives from the area, only two from Stettler were unable to make it on time. In other news, Westwoods Agriplex is starting to hum with activity, including family reunions and weddings. Diane Baird is back home from a wedding in Saskatoon this past weekend. The daughter of good friend and one of
Diane’s bridesmaid’s, Bonnie. The bingo Saturday night saw 20 people there. With another good crowd next month, the loonie pot will be close to one hundred dollars. Next bingo is July 20. Percy and Paulette Heer, along with several other couples, helped Barry Brown celebrate his 80-plus one birthday on Friday night. Cake, coffee and laughter were on the menu. Donna McKay were among the friends and family gathered at the Anglican Church last week to say goodbye to Steve Gordon. His wife Joyce is a good friend of Donna’s and part of our Gadsby District Hobby Club. Our deepest sympathies.
DONALDA DIARY By Darlene Tantrum The village of Donalda is bustling with last-minute plans for the July 1 weekend. As always, there is lots happening in Donalda for the holiday weekend. The second annual Show & Shine will be set up at the Lamp Park on Saturday starting at 8 am with a Pancake Breakfast, sponsored by the Donalda Coulee Friendship Club. In the afternoon, the Donalda Animal Rescue will have the grills going for
lunch or snacks. It runs till 5 p.m. At the school will be the kickoff to the Donalda School Reunion, celebrating 100 years. There are many activities planned at the school, with a roast beef dinner in the evening. The reunion will run for two days, with all events at the school. July 1 events will start at 8 a.m., with a Pancake Breakfast at the church, this is sponsored by the church, the parade starts at 11 a.m, assembling at the school grounds. There will be all kinds of activi-
ties for the kids and adults to enjoy. There will be lunch available sponsored by the Donalda Parent Group, and Steak Supper at 5:30 p.m. provided by Teresa’s Catering. Live Auction and live band, winding up with FIREWORKS at 11 p.m. The Drop In Centre will be open all weekend from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering homemade pie and ice cream and hot and cold beverages. The Donalda Art Gallery, which is exhibiting the Stettler Church Mice, will also be open all weekend,
along with the museum. Don’t forget to bring your walking shoes as you may want to hike the marked trail into the coulees. See you in Donalda for our fabulous weekend. ENDIANG ENTERPRISE By Les and Rosemary Stulberg Many women gathered at the Byemoor hall on Wednesday evening to honour Kristina Peters with a bridal shower. Kristina and Justin Jones will be married on July 5, in the farm yard of the groom’s parents, Miles and Lynne Jones. A good crowd braved the rainy weather on Friday for the Albert Baes farm sale. Albert was unable to be there as he is in the Hanna hospital. We wish Albert a quick return to good
health and all the best as he relocates to Hanna. The sale brings an end to an era, as the farm has been in the same family for 102 years — homesteaded by Albert’s grandfather Jacob Bossert in 1911. Harley Tateson of Scandia purchased the Baes farm and his son Kody Tateson purchased the nearby Naf farm, which some will remember as the Nill place. Twenty-year-old Kody will be living on the Naf farm and over-seeing the Endiang ranch. His brother Justin is lending a
hand this summer before going back to college. We welcome the Tatesons to the community. It is great to have more young people join the community. Mappin Simmentals — Albert and Jean Mappin and Eric and Maureen Smith — hosted the Alberta Simmental Association annual general meeting and field day at their Byemoor farm on Saturday. Congratulations to the local recipients of long-service awards at the Clearview Recog-
nition Night on Wednesday in Stettler. Linda Kobi was recognized for 20 years service and Sandra Keith for 10 years. Dale and Dwight Tucker, Chuck, Morris and Ryan Schilling, Lloyd Hausher and some other out-of-area friends flew to Trout Lake in northern Saskatchewan on a fishing excursion. The men reported a successful trip. Remember that the Wade Buchwitz Memorial Gymkhana is coming up July 1 in Endiang. It starts at 11 a.m. and ends
with fireworks. The Alberta flood situation had a local impact — due to the Drumheller flood evacuation Lorene Stulberg had three hours to get her dad Gary Cousins out of the Drumheller extended care home. Gary stayed with Larry and Lorene until officials knew where the river would crest, and it was safe to return. Congratulations to Gayle Sacuta on receiving her master’s degree in library and information studies at the spring convocation of the University of Alberta.

The Canada Day celebration schedule for Big Valley: 11 a.m. — The Rocky Mountain Rail Society speeder will be taking visitors for rides in the Big Valley railyard, while back in Stettler, the Steam Train will be leaving the Alberta Prairie Railway yard on its way out to Big Valley. 12:55 — The Big Valley Station opens for viewing. On display will be the artwork created by the elementary students of Big Valley School. There will also be face painting and a boxcar will be opened with a display and historic photos inside.
1 p.m. — The Steam Train will be met at the station by members of the Legion as it arrives. 2:15 p.m. — There will be a reaffirmation ceremony at the Big Valley Station and then dignitaries will have a photo opportunity and a chance to meet the crew. 2:45 p.m. — The train is scheduled to depart for Stettler. 5:30-7 p.m. — Barbecue and kids games down at the Big Valley ball diamonds. Lots of family fun and prizes! The day’s events will be followed by an evening fireworks display. If you are interested in railway heritage and this
area’s history, come on out to enjoy this little taste of the past as Big Valley celebrates July 1. The Big Valley United Church summer service schedule has been updated. Local chuckwagon driver, Layne MacGillivray has experienced a wet spring race season. Last weekend, the Guy Weadick days at High River were postponed due to the severe flooding in Southern Alberta. According to the WPCA standings, Layne is sitting a respectable 13th spot going into the Ponoka Stampede, which began Tuesday. Stan and Dorothy Anderson attended the Clearview public school recognition night and banquet at the Stettler Hall on June 19. Their daughter, Charlene, was one of the Award of Merit recipients. It was presented to her by Castor trustee Karen Holloway. She had been nominated by Wendy Coppock, viceprincipal of the Gus Wetter School. Lacrosse playoffs were held in Red Deer last weekend. Wyatt Kent, Simon Muncy and Paden Williams of Halkirk play on the Stettler midget team. Macquire Kent and Eric Williams play with a Stettler bantam team. The grades 1 to 3 students went to the Ukrainian Village in Vegreville for their year end field trip and the grades 4 to 6 went to Fort Normandeau near Red Deer. Earlier in June, Sandra and JD Johnson and Dale and Denise Marquet enjoyed a relaxing trip to San Antonio, Texas. They took a trip to the Alamo, which they found interesting.
