An A in art J.R. Rardon Black Press PORT HARDY— Teacher Gloria Cole caught the interest of her Grade 4 class at Eagle View Elementary when she offered both an overnight field trip and an art project to create threedimensional murals for the school’s walls. What she didn’t mention was that they would actually be learning something. The students created three of the murals, each depicting a pre-contact Native village in the Pacific Northwest. The murals, featuring totem poles, canoes, big houses and, in some cases, people, indicate both the similarities and differences in Haida, Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish cultures. “I had the class work in three groups, and they got to choose

a village of their own for drawing,” said Cole, a First Nation instructor and PhD candidate who will retire from School District 85 this summer to take a job at the University of British Columbia. “The project was integrated with social studies and language studies.” Two of the murals — the Kwakwaka’wakw village dominated by a big house of the type found at Tsakis, in the District of Port Hardy, and the Haida village, with a big house dominated by a towering totem pole — have been placed in the school’s library, high on the wall above the rear entrance. The third, a Coast Salish village with an unadorned long house and numerous smaller wooden houses, hangs on the wall in the main hallway.

Each is approximately four feet by six feet in size. “There has been a lot of pride in these murals,” said Frank MacLean, principal of Eagle View. The project included an overnight field trip to Alert Bay to visit the U’mista Cultural Centre, the museum and repository for masks, carvings and other Kwakwaka’wakw potlatch artifacts initially confiscated when Canada banned the potlatch early in the last century. “The people at U’mista were super impressed with the knowledge of that Grade 4 class,” said MacLean. The murals were completed in “three or four days” of intense activity, said student Sagel Wilson, but Cole said the entire project was spread over three months. “We had to do a

Rardon lot of research,” said Aaliyah Therrien, another of the students. Starting with their textbooks, which provided illustrations of traditional Haida, Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish big or long houses, the students went on to explore other differences in each of those peoples’ cultures. “We learned they have different types of canoes,” student

Angelica Stagg said. “And their language is way different.” The project also involved the students learning several Kwak’wala words, including the traditional greeting of Gila’kasla and words describing many colours. When students completed their lessons, Wilson said, they were allowed to join in mural creation.

dond@campbellrivermirror.com

The fishing guides who have been in Campbell River are saying that this year is the best for Coho in about 20 years. Salmon, Cod and Halibut has been very good and the action continues to pick up as we get closer to April Point Fishing July. The Army Truck and Locations Blue Meannie Hootchies are working. With the number of boats out at the Hump the fishing action is prime at the moment. The Upper Campbell is a great spot to go fishing and lots of smaller trout can be caught using spoons or flies. Close to Campbell River, Echo Lake sees a Alex McKay 3.6 oz Trout lot of action on the Buttle Lake weekend and the far west side is a great spot to wet a fly at evening hours. Beach fishing for Pinks will be picking up in a few weeks and the shoreline will be dotted with anglers starting in July right through October. On the cleaning table the Salmon and Halibut are full of herring and needlefish. At Discovery Pier in Campbell River the first salmon catch hasn’t happened and the bottom fish are fun to catch on any given day. On the Pier fishing rods can be rented by the hour and the locals are trying to catch the first salmon.

Protecting plant diversity Erin Haluschak Black Press COMOX VALLEY — Vivien Adams understands the urgency behind food security, as she has seen first-hand the decrease of commercial vegetable varieties of seeds. Adams is the coordinator behind the Comox Valley Seed Bank — a sub-group from the Comox Valley Growers and Seeds Savers which aims to preserve and maintain a collection of viable, openpollinated, non-GMO, organically grown food seeds that are welladapted to the growing conditions of the Comox Valley. “There is an enormous diversity of veggie varieties which produce so many different flavours,” Adams said. “Multi-national plant companies patent certain varieties and it’s gone forever. It’s a threat to the plant diversity.” Over the past 100 years, 96 per cent of commercial vegetable varieties have been lost, Adams noted. She explained hybrid seeds, those which are crossed, were created by companies for a variety of reasons, including commercial traits such as a longer shelf life, vegetables which travel well, and increasing sweetness. As a result, many small seed companies have been bought up by the larger corporations. Adams added hybrid seeds require the grower to purchase new seeds every year. Heritage, heirloom, open-pollinated or non-hybridized seeds are those that when planted, grow true, she said. Due to the significant decrease in open-pollinated seeds, she said the Seeds Savers “wanted to take it to another level. “We are growing (the seeds) out year after year for them to

The bank is a living seed bank, as the seeds which are stored have been tried out during seasons with a variety of conditions. In 2012, some of the seeds saved include 15 types of beans, beets, winter squash, tomatoes, buckwheat and Ethiopian wheat. For those unsure how to save seeds and

donate them to the bank, member and fellow gardener Ellen Rainwalker said two long-time members — Nick and Anna Guthrie — will visit homes and assist in the process of saving seeds. She noted the process with the bank begins with members taking 20 seeds and signing a contract which says they will monitor the performance of the seed throughout the year.
