Draft recreation master plan good news for town By Treena Mielke The findings of a company hired to look at the overall recreation picture in Rimbey to create a future master plan are good news for the town. A report from RC Strategies, a consulting company based in Edmonton, states the majority of Rimbey’s recreational services are at a similar or better level than those of similar sized communities. The report states the town spends less per capita than comparable communities on parks, trails and recreation (Rimbey spends $202 per resident annually compared to similarly sized communities that average $343 per resident annually). Steven Slawuta from RC Strategies says the town is doing a great job. “There is a lot in Rimbey and the town spends a little less and provides more (for the residents).” On the flip side, even though Rimbey offers a strong complement of registered recreation and sport programming, there are minimal spontaneoususe opportunities. “There are always ways to improve,” said Slawuta. A household survey shows recreation and leisure are important to residents, with 59 per cent of the households surveyed satisfied with the current availability. RC Strategies said surveys show the enhancement of parks, trails and outdoor spaces are a priority. According to the survey, the indoor facility with the highest use is the auditorium at the community centre, followed by the hockey arena. Other suggestions the consulting group included in its report are an outdoor amphitheatre/band shelter, a dog off-leash area, indoor child playground, the rehabilitation of the outdoor tennis courts and the relocation of the skateboard park. Outdoor basketball courts, expansion of the fitness room, an indoor walking/running track, enhancement of the gymnasium, a baseball-specific diamond and an indoor fieldhouse would also improve the recreation scenario. Slawuta said the town needs to work with its volunteers to help enhance the delivery of recreation and leisure opportunities. He suggested the town work with agencies in Rimbey such as the FCSS Volunteer Centre to coordinate recruitment and placement activities by maintain a roster of residents seeking volunteer op-

The mirrors are to be replaced and security enhanced, and the centre may be expanded and a television installed, depending on funding. Treena Mielke Photo portunities. A conference or symposium would also provide an opportunity to connect volunteers to organizations. The town needs to focus on developing cost-effective programs, which can provide physical activity and social opportunities for seniors and other residents facing physical barriers to participation in

recreation and leisure, the report states. “It’s a common sense plan, (but) there are limited resources,” Slawuta said. During its research, RC Strategies received 185 households and 17 groups completed surveys and eight stakeholders were interviewed. A total of 151 student surveys were completed and four comparable communities analyzed. A general as-

sessment of parks, sports fields and trails was conducted and four preliminary indoor facility assessments completed. Other research included studying industry publications and town planning documentation. RC Stragies draft plan will be presented to council for approval and action.

Talented musicians team up to provide great entertainment ‘n’ roll, pop, Beatles, Elvis, Bryan Adams, Lonestar.” She is also looking forward to performing a classical concert with a pianist from Bulgaria in Red Deer in July. When Fuss-Dutz hooked up with Bergeron, her country music gene kicked in and her fingers danced across the keyboard in perfect rhythm with the country singer. It seems like it was truly meant to be. “I cut my teeth on country music,” she said. “And I believe if God opens a door, He wants me to go through it.” Bergeron, who moved to Rimbey last year, is a singer/songwriter/recording artist and producer. Her debut CD, Makin A Connection, was recorded in Nashville in 1998 at the Gatlin Brothers Studio. Her second CD, She Drives, produced by Mesh Studios in Burnaby, B.C. received rave reviews in Canada and European countries and was nominated for Album of the Year through the British Columbia Country Music association. Bergeron has twice been the Country Gospel Performer of the Year with the British Columbia Country Music Association. Her latest CD, which came out last Christmas, The Gift, featured 12 tracks, nine of which Bergeron wrote herself. Bergeron says her music is truly a gift from God, adding it gives her great pleasure to share her talent with others knowing she has touched someone’s life in a positive way. “It gives me joy,” she said. Working with Fuss-Dutz has been most rewarding, she said. “She is so much fun and a great asset to me as a singer. I am looking forward to lots of performances together.”

Debbie Bergeron was four years old and living in British Columbia when she belted out her first country song into a microphone set up in the family’s living room. Needless to say, her song was a hit. When Brenda Fuss-Dutz was about that age, she could listen to her dad whistle a tune and pick it up on the keyboard. By the time she was 12, Fuss-Dutz, who grew up on a farm near Wetaskiwin, was playing keyboard in a dance band called the Alley Cats. The odds that the paths of these two women, who would both become talented musicians in their own right, would ever cross paths seemed highly unlikely, but as luck would have it, fate intervened. Years later, Bergeron, now living in Rimbey, and Fuss-Dutz, who lives in Sylvan Lake, have become a duo. The results have been truly amazing. The pair has their first gig together at the Ponoka Stampede and will play there from noon to 1 p.m. June 28 to July 1 at the Ag rec complex. Bergeron will perform at the Calgary Stampede at Windows of the West July 14 at 1:30 p.m. On Aug. 9 the pair will perform at the Ivan Daines Country Picnic at Innisfail in the afternoon. “Working with Debbie is exciting and a challenge,” said Fuss-Dutz. “I listen to her CDs with full band and then try to adapt that to piano. She’s an amazing person and I love her style and her original music.” Fuss-Dutz, whose gift of music encompasses all genres, is an accomplished pianist with a Grade 10 in Royal Conservatory of Music. For her, it’s more than reading notes from a song sheet. “Music is in my DNA,” she said. “It’s who I am and what I’m meant to do …. perform, teach, accompany. I am currently SHELDON AND QUENTIN IBBOTSON teaching music for and Staff of Rimbey Foods young children, which I very much enjoy.” “the Biggest Little Grocery Store” As well as playing for your many years of friendly, excellent keyboard with a worservice; and for your support of our project. ship band from her church, she plays a Welcome to Rimbey duelling piano gig evnew owners ery third Friday at the Sheraton Hotel Lounge Steven Yoon and Junnie Chung in Red Deer. “We do a bit of evSincerely erything from ’50s, ’60s The Beatty Heritage House Society and ’70s. Dressing up for personal voyage There’s something to be said about time travel. It’s fun, actually, and not hard to do if you dress the part. The other night I slipped back to the Fifties as easily as if I were one of those long play shiny black records spinning round and round on the scratchy needle of an old Treena Mielke fashioned record player. On The Other Side I didn’t mean to time travel, but only to dress up, so I would fit in at the dance with all the other dressed up people. I came home from work all tired and old and definitely not feeling like a teenager. But my husband and I had tickets for this dance where you were supposed to dress up in the decade of your choice. My girlfriends, who are natural born planners, had already discussed the issue at length and decided to go to the dance as elegant and sophisticated flapper ladies, complete with feather boas that left little feathers all over the place kind of like misplaced angels or fallen angels, whatever the case may be. They were going to wear ridiculously high heels and fire engine red lipstick and look really smashing. And they did! I didn’t want to be a flapper girl. But I had to be something, so I dug into my closet, coming up with a skirt that twirled delightfully around my knees, bobby socks and running shoes with pink shoelaces. I put my hair up in a high ponytail, tied it with a white ribbon I ruthlessly pulled off my kitchen curtains and fastened a pair of pearls around my neck. I brazenly lined my eyes with coal black liquid eyeliner, brushed on too many coats of mascara and recklessly applied dated bright blue eyeshadow that had somehow escaped the trash. I surveyed the finished product in the mirror and, as I looked at the made up woman who bore only a slight resemblance to the girl who used to be me, something happened inside of me. I got younger. For one thing, I felt slimmer. I felt like I had a 20inch waist again. I tried to cinch the buckle of my wide belt in a little tighter on account of feeling that way but for some reason it didn’t happen. Oh, well, who needs reality anyway? I decided to focus on my hair and flip my ponytail like I used to do when I was in high school. I was far too shy to converse with the opposite sex, but could however, flip my ponytail with the best of them. I hoped this action would make me cool enough so I didn’t really have to talk, only flip and keep walking. It worked sometimes. Unfortunately, my ponytail, which I created out of this hairpiece I found stuck under my bathroom sink, was in danger of flipping right off my head if I tried to flip it too vigorously. I settled for a gentle flip and stuck a few more bobby pins in my head, hoping it would stay intact. We arrived at the dance, me with my make believe ponytail and my scratchy black crinoline showing only just slightly beneath my black poodle skirt and my husband dressed in a white T-shirt and blue jeans. We were ready to rock and roll the night away. The music filled the crowded arena with just the right amount of nostalgia and people could jive and bebop their way down memory lane to the Fifities or dance the Charleston way back to the flapper era. I loved the music and I loved the way my skirt swished when I walked and when I danced. And, I loved the delicious feeling, even though it was gone in less than a heartbeat, of being young again, too young to worry about very much at all. Sometimes I can’t believe I ever was that young and yet the feeling I caught that night seemed familiar somehow. So, it must be true. I was young, once! And my ponytail was real!

Iran: The new broom? You certainly can’t say that Iranian elections are boring. In 2005, Iranians surprised everybody by electing the darkest of dark horses, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to the presidency. They didn’t know much about him but at least he seemed different from all the establishment candidates. Well, he was different —not in a good way. By the 2009 election Ahmadinejad’s erratic and confrontational style had turned people off, and he should have lost — but he rigged the vote and triggered mass protests that badly frightened the regime before they were crushed. Term limits prevented Ahmadinejad from running again this year and the Iranians pulled off another surprise. They elected Hassan Rouhani, the only moderate candidate among the six contenders, to the presidency in the first round. Rouhani got 50 per cent of the votes; his closest rival got only 16 per cent. The foreign reaction to Rouhani’s victory was instantaneous. The United States offered to open direct talks with Tehran on Iran’s nuclear program as well as on bilateral relations. Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, by contrast, predictably warned that there should be no “wishful thinking” about Rouhani’s victory. So what is he: new broom, or another disappointment in the making? Rouhani has been saying some interesting things. “What I truly wish is for moderation to return to the country,” he told the reformist daily Sharq. And he has repeatedly promised that both the nuclear issue and the resulting economic sanctions against Iran would be solved if he became president. You might think that Rouhani’s highest priority, therefore, must be to end the sanctions that are crippling Iran’s economy and impoverishing ordinary voters. Not so: trust comes first. To retain credibility with the people who voted for him, he must first release Iran’s political prisoners. After that, of course, he must make a deal with the Western countries that have waged a long campaign on Israel’s behalf against Iran’s alleged intention to build nuclear weapons. That is not impossible, for Iran is certainly not working on nuclear weapons now: the US National Intelligence Estimates of 2007 and 2011 both say so, and even the Israeli intelligence chiefs agree. The whole campaign against Iran is based not on evidence but on mistrust: the conviction in some Western quarters (and most Israeli ones) is if Iran can enrich uranium, the “mad mullahs” are bound to build and use nuclear weapons in the end. But it is Iran’s right to build nuclear reactors and enrich

Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist

fuel for them under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which it has signed and still observes. So now that motormouth Ahmedinejad is gone and a saner leader is about to take the reins in Tehran, there could be a deal on the nuclear issue. It would be a deal that preserves the country’s right to enrich uranium, but strengthens the controls against enrichment to weapons grade (90 per cent). As with the question of releasing political prisoners, however, Rouhani must first get the assent of the Supreme Guide, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei, as the head of the theocratic side of the government, has the power to veto everything. However, he also wants to preserve this strange twoheaded beast called the Iranian revolution, and that means he must retain popular consent. Western sanctions are bringing the Iranian economy to its knees, and people are really hurting. So maybe Khamenei will let Rouhani and his backers save him. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Not all seniors oppose library Dear Editor: The comment that seniors are pleased with the result of our recent vote on library expansion does not sit well with me. This classes all seniors in the same light, which is not true. I am a senior and very unhappy with the result. I have lived in Rimbey for 44 years and have watched business and activities for our young people disappear. Our library needs to expand and now when it does it will cost much more to. Let’s hope the naysayers accept this. I am also very disappointed in the recent bullying in our town. I feel as adults we should be setting a good example for our young people. Sheila Forsen

Get ready for seven days of rodeo action in Ponoka By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Ponoka, with a population of 6,700, will swell to thousands more during Stampede Week, June 25 to July 1. The Stampede brings many different events over the week but the best part for Joe Dodds is the first day. As president of the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association, Dodds really enjoys the entire experience but all the planning and organizing culminates on that first day. “It’s better than Christmas, it lasts a whole week,” says Dodds. “You kind of forget about your life for seven days.” Community events that go along with the Stampede are fun for the entire family; from pancake breakfasts, to the Stampede Parade, from the midway to Canada Day festivities. June 25 at the Stampede will bring entertainment from the well-known Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Dodge Truck Giveaway winner will be announced. As if that wasn’t enough, country music legend Wynonna Judd will entertain music fans June 27, followed by fireworks. The timed events have two gorounds a day, once during the morning slack and again in the afternoon rodeo. Tuesday has an evening performance rather than in the afternoon and the last day, July 1, features the top 12 competitors; the top four then compete in the final rodeo showdown in the evening. People from all over North America come to the Ponoka Stampede

for their vacation and to camp, says Dodds. He has seen licence plates from Alaska, the Yukon and the United States. “We try to put on a first class organization and it works all the way down.” Fireworks entertainment A great way to close the evening’s entertainment is with a bang but it’s also something to give back to the town, says director Mike Stretch. “When the music is over…It helps get people’s focus on something else.” People have come expect the fireworks, especially after the talent show performance. Stretch remembers feedback one year when there were no fireworks after the talent show. “When you don’t have it, people miss it.” Mural honours strong western heritage After two years the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame (CPRHF) in Ponoka is ready to unveil its 120-foot long mural. The mural is a dedication to the first days of rodeo up to present day stampeders and will make its home at the CPRHF headquarters upstairs in the Calnash Ag Event Centre. Artist Inge Sybrandi was commissioned to paint the epic mural, and Judi Wilson, secretary-treasurer of the hall of fame is “over the top pleased with the quality of her work. It’s mind blowing let me tell ya.’” The mural starts out with black and white paintings to keep in line with the old photographs and then starts to slowly move into colour. She feels the unveiling on June 25 will be an even bigger day than their grand

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, the Calgary Stampede and Dodge Ram sponsored the mural and they received a sneak preview after Sybrandi revealed three 4 foot by 5 foot portions. Pictures of actual rodeo events were used in the mural as well. “You may just recognize the rider.” Sybrandi finds herself excited and nervous at the same time over the unveiling. Even though people may say they do not care what people think, the art-

ist still worries. “In reality, everybody cares about what people think.” “To have your own 120-foot work up there is intimidating to me,” she added. Each of the 25 pieces presented a different challenge and because of that have several layers of paint. Rather than fight with the panel, Sybrandi painted over it to meet her exacting standards and to give viewers something she can be proud of.

However, consequences such as suspensions aren’t being taken out of the division’s vocabulary. Instead, its suspension powers are growing. “We have the authority to suspend students for things they’ve done over the weekend if it’s going to affect school Monday morning,” said Jacobs. He feels students and parents alike believe if something transgresses off school grounds, outside of school hours it can’t be touched by the school, but Jacobs says if it’s going to affect the school’s environment and health the school can inject itself into the situation. “So many people believe once they’re at home they’re safe, they can say anything they want,” said Jacobs.

The Rimbey Review, June 25, 2013 7 Men at work: Don Robinson and Travis Goscafson from Hyrdro Dig from Bentley were busy in front of Rimbey Hotel last week. A bent and buried water shut off valve was repaired. Apparently, some discussion at the hotel revolved around a puddle of water in front of the hotel which never seems to disappear. However, Vern Browne from Rimbey Public Works Department, said he is not aware of any such puddle, and the only reason there could be such a pooling of water is because of a low spot in the sidewalk. The sidewalk in front of hotel will be replaced later this summer. APN Photo

Protect our environment. Albertans recycled over 1.8 billion beverage containers last year – more than ever before. Let’s continue to do something good for the environment, and make 2013 another record-breaking year. 13064DA0

Special van affords more freedom and togetherness By June Norvila

ed Sheila was advised by the Bentley Royal Purple Lodge they had secured $6,000 from their national charity, The Elks & Royal Purple Children’s Fund, and had added an additional $1,000 from their own funds to go toward the cost. Now that the funding was in place Kelba-Warawa could actually go ahead and order the dream vehicle. A van was ordered and purchased through the equipment side of Shoppers Home Health Care in Calgary. “The Calgary salesman was very helpful and didn’t try to sell us something that was not needed or more expensive,” Kelba-Warawa. “He advised us what we needed, without the bells and whistles, to help keep the cost down. By taking a last year’s model, and a color that was in stock, it was cheaper and quicker to get.” Shoppers Home Health Care normally tries to have some basic vans in stock that people can purchase but specific vans can sometimes be ordered through them. After the basic van purchase is confirmed, Shoppers Home Health Care equipment division sends it away to get retrofitted with a ramp and other specialized equipment that fills the customer’s unique needs. A blue 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan with ‘Braunability’ was delivered to Bentley in mid-March and already has changed the lives of the two. Their van includes a system to get a wheelchair into the van and be secured without brute muscle power. Now Guinevere can sit more comfortably in her customized wheelchair instead of having here legs dangling in a less-than-ideal car seat. “It didn’t take me long to learn how to use it (the loading system). They showed me how when they delivered it and made sure I knew how before they left. Now I am getting really good at it. It doesn’t take nearly as long. It is becoming more automatic and I don’t have to think about it (the steps to take) so much,” says an ecstatic Kelba-Warawa. It was getting harder and harder for mother and daughter to enjoy outings together but now, because of an especially equipped van, travel has become much easier. Bentley’s Sheila Kelba-Warawa had to face the fact not being able to easily transport her now nineyear-old daughter, Guinevere Warawa, was holding her back from taking her daughter places. When Guinevere was younger, lighter and smaller, Kelba-Warawa was able to lift her from her special customized wheelchair and into her car seat but now it was getting to be just too much of an ordeal. Following up on a suggestion about two years ago by an occupational therapist, Kelba-Warawa decided the time had come to seek specialized transportation. “It was finally getting too awkward to lift her (Guinevere) and was hurting my back. I knew that we had to have it for her safety too,” said Kelba-Warawa, so she went to work trying to find funding help. The kind of transportation needed would cost at least $40,000. How could the single mother afford that? It took about six months just to do the paperwork Sheila Kelba-Warawa and daughter Guinevere Warawa, 9, are now able and fill in numerous applications and provide picto enjoy many more outings together thanks to an especially equipped tures, but in the end, and after a lot of work, Kelbavan that makes transporting Guinevere much easier. Rimbey, a small community with a big heart, promises to be a hot spot of fun and activity on Canada Day. The reasons to celebrate Canada Day are as diverse as the people themselves and in Rimbey, as in other communities throughout the nation, the celebration carries with it, a common denominator. It’s fun. The day will start off with the usual delicious pancake breakfast to be held at Pas-Ka-Poo Park from 8 until 11 a.m. Canada Day fun activities will get underway around 9 a.m. and will include mini-golf, barrel train rides, horsedrawn wagon rides, donkey rides and inflatables, a tattoo artist and a souvenir booth. A children’s DJ will also be on hand.

At 1 p.m. the formal segment of the day will begin with speeches and the singing of O Canada. The Rimbey branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be included in the opening ceremonies. Cake and ice cream will be served later in the day. Everyone is invited to take part in the festivities, dress up in the familiar red and white, sport a Canada flag, chat with friends, and just relax and enjoy celebrating the great country in which we live.

Cuban couple make Rimbey their new home By Treena Mielke A cool spring day in Rimbey is like a winter day in Cuba, but even though the climate has required some adjustment, Alex Suarez and Madelin Sardina love it here. The couple moved to Rimbey recently with their 12-year-old daughter, Melissa, and they are glad they did. “We love Canada, and Rimbey is a nice little town. The people here are very beautiful, very friendly,” said Sardina.

She and her husband moved to Rimbey as Suarez began working as chef of Henry’s, the restaurant at Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel. Suarez has several years’ experience as a professional chef, working in large hotels and resorts in Cuba. Now, he is able to bring his expertise to Rimbey and although he is used to working in much larger establishments, he finds the kitchen at Henry’s to have the latest up-to-date equipment and a pleasure to work in.

“The conditions are wonderful here,” he said. Sardina, who worked in the tourist industry in Cuba, said she and her husband were in Canada visiting a couple of years ago and loved it. Through the help of Canadian friends they were able to secure employment. “We saw that there were many opportunities and we wanted to come here, but it took more than a year to make it all happen. It was worth it though. There is much more opportunity here and we have received such a warm welcome. Everyone is so friendly and nice.” Sardina and her husband have family in Cuba

and admits to missing them, and recalls, somewhat wistfully that Cuba is a beautiful island with incredible beaches. However, she wants her family to visit and already feels at home in Canada. Henry’s is open from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and hours will be extended when a second chef comes on board. The couple is looking forward to meeting new people in Rimbey and Suarez invites the public to try out his delicious cuisine. He said every Saturday will be a Cuban night with waiters dressed Cuban style, Cuban music playing and Cuban drinks served.

Spartans finish spring training on winning streak By Treena Mielke Rimbey Spartans high school football team has finished spring training and will enjoy the summer off before hitting the field in late August. The Spartans did well in spring training, said coach Bill Bramfield, noting they won three out of four mini games in a jamboree in Edmonton. “They did well, but more importantly, they gained valuable experience,” he said. The coach said some adjustments were made on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball following the jamboree. “These adjustments paid off as the team played an exhibition game against Breton with a favorable out-

come.” The Spartans won the game 9142 but Bramfield doesn’t feel his team owns bragging rights as things can change as the season progresses. “I think we are where we need to be, but it’s early. They placed well. They had tied Breton in the jamboree, so they had a little bit to prove. For sure, we have a lot of talented players.” Eight Spartans will graduate this year but 16 will return and four rookies will be on the roster. “We have lots of fresh blood coming in.” The Spartans defeated Drayton Valley last year to win the division finals but lost to Mill Woods in provincials, ending up with a silver medal in the Alberta Six Man Football League.

The Rimbey Spartans high powered offense will be an asset at they try to build on last year’s provincial silver medal. Photo submitted

For you were no aquarium, no lion fish fanned the glass and flared, no clown drolled its acrylic anemones for us to see. You were an elegant cabinet, the wood exquisite and rare for it was felled from a hearty tree. In your secret corners, tiny scrolls no bigger than the bones in our ears brooded in moods of black ink; an obsidian arrowhead, a smoky sea glass pulsed out of sight in their covert drawers. We wish that in a threatening crash you had tipped and spilled yourself open, that even one golden hinge had broken. We wish that even the subtlest of secrets had shaken your contents free. We wish you hadn’t swallowed the key.
