TODAY'S WEATHER

About 270 Creston Valley elementary school students were bused to Yaqan Nukiy on Friday to participate in Aboriginal Hertitage Day activities. Here, students joined the Lower Kootenay Band drummers to pound out a beat that filled the room.

With some residents measuring more than three inches of rain last week, damage was inevitable. But it seems like the Creston Valley got lucky, at least compared to areas to the north and east. Work continues on repairs to the Highway 3A washout (above) near Sirdar and in Wynndel, where a stretch of railway bed was eroded, leaving train tracks hanging without support (photo on Page 22). In the Crestglen Mobile Home Park, a portion of bank slid toward homes, but none were damaged.

Keep an eye out today (Thursday) for cyclists raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. They will be arriving from Rossland and then heading out Friday morning for Cranbrook. On Saturday, June 22nd, 2013, a group of 22 dedicated cyclists began a 9-day (1,200 km) bike ride from Vancouver to Banff in support of cystic fibrosis (CF) research. They

are cycling across Southern British Columbia, climbing nine mountain summits before arriving in Banff, to a final altitude of 8,100 metres. This year ’s GearUp4CF ride will be unlike the seven previous ones. Three riders participating this year have cystic fibrosis. Joining the 9-day Marathon Ride will be: Paul Underhill and George Keulen who will both be join-

ing for the first time, and Mike Hamilton, who is attempting his second GearUp4CF ride. Since its inception in 2006, GearUp4CF has raised over $1.1 million for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Although each rider has a unique story behind their motivation to ride, they all share one common goal: a cure for cystic fibrosis.

The Creston Museum might be all about local history, but you can learn an awful lot about Canadian history while you’re there. Don’t believe us? We’ll prove it to you – they’re putting together a special Canada Day Trivia Challenge! They have approximately fifteen questions about Canada’s history, all of which can be answered by looking for clues in the displays at the Creston Museum. Which Prime Minister holds the

record for the most consecutive election victories? (Hint: his face appears on a plate in one of our displays.) Before Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces in 1905, the land they encompass was divided into several districts of the North West Territories – can you name three of those districts? (There’s a map in the schoolhouse that might help.) And you might want to take a closer look at this flag, because it’s almost certainly going to provide a clue for one of the

questions. It’s a chance for you to show off how much you know about Canada! Take the Challenge on your phone (download the mobile app at www.ooklnet. com) or play on paper - your choice. Complete the Challenge and enter to win prizes. Admission for Trivia Challengers is just $2 per person ($5 for a family). The Challenge runs all day, from 10:00 to 5:00 on July 1, and the draw for prizes will be made at 5:00.

Farm fresh milk a hit with Kootenay consumers By LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The once familiar sound of clinking milk bottles in local dairy cases has returned to the Creston Valley. Kootenay Meadows, a family-owned organic farm in the Lister agricultural area, is now selling a full line of milk products, processed and bottled mostly with used and salvaged equipment. It’s another giant step for a family farm that has labored to create a value-added product line to sustain a future for owners Wayne and Denise Harris and their daughters, Erin and Nadine. The Harrises began making their alpine-style cheese (formerly under the label Kootenay Alpine Cheese) six years ago, and just began bottling their farm fresh milk this spring. Since the commencement of milk bottling, no longer does the farm produce organic milk only to see it hauled off in tanker trucks to distant processing plants, where it is untraceable and processed as non-organic milk. And no longer do Kootenay residents lose out on the opportunity to purchase milk and cream from local, grass-fed cows. Single source, locally bottled dairy products haven’t been available in Creston stores for more than 40 years and the community’s appetite has clearly been whetted. Not that starting a commercial bottling operation is easy. New equipment is either simply not available or cost prohibitive. “Our bottle washer and case washer are refurbished,” Nadine said. “No one is making new bottle washers any more, so we found two old ones of the same make— in terrible condition. Brad Issac, a talented local millwright, made one that works.” The pasteurizer came out of a government surplus auction. It once did service in a New Brunswick penitentiary. The Harrises hope that the small, two-bottle filler will soon be replaced by a more productive unit. To create the capacity to separate, pasteurize, bottle and store milk, an addition to the cheese-making facility doubled the interior space. A retail room will soon be ready to sell the farm’s expanded product line in a large, sun-filled area. Kootenay Meadows milk products are sold in 500ml, quart (946mL) and halfgallon (1.89L) glass bottles, sourced from Ontario, “the only supplier in North America.” “Dad and I worked for weeks to calculate how much glass we would need to start and within a month we were starting to run short,” Nadine said. Picture oldfashioned bottles with an elegant, simple clover and grass graphic, and it’s easy to imagine them sitting on kitchen windowsills, serving as retro-style flower vases. Despite the appeal of keeping a bottle or two at home, Kootenay Meadows

greatly appreciates when customers rinse and return the bottles to stores, so that they may be picked up when delivering fresh milk to be washed and re-filled again. Re-usable glass is used to be environmentally, and economically, responsible, “So please return your bottles for reuse,” is the plea from Nadine. The Harris family is hardly unfamiliar with re-tilling old ground. Six years ago a venture into cheese-making was seen as a huge risk. Now, Kootenay Meadows cheese is available in stores and markets from Vancouver Island to Ontario. The cheese-making venture provided a comfort level that allowed Erin to return to the family farm after earning a degree in organic agriculture in Ontario. Nadine, who has a degree in education, sold Kootenay Alpine (now Kootenay Meadows) cheese in Lower Mainland markets before she, too, returned home. Only their brother, Foster, has resisted the temptation to move back permanently, but even he has returned to help with construction, first of the fromagerie, and then of the bottling plant. A herd of 80 cows, a mix of Holstein, Swedish Red, Guernsey and Normande cows, is sustained with organically grown feed on a patchwork quilt of owned and leased parcels. The herd produces about 14,000L a week, 3,000-4,000L of which is used for cheese. Gravity fed milk from the nearby milking barn makes its way gently through stainless steel pipes to be processed into cheese or milk and cream. Two months into production, orders for milk and cream are up to about 5,000L a week. The remainder is shipped out in bulk trucks, an amount that, ideally, will dwindle to nothing as wholesale orders throughout the East and West Kootenays increase. Save-On-Foods and Kootenay Co-op in Nelson, and Overwaitea Foods and Famous Fritz Meats and Deli in Creston, are the biggest retailers, but equally important are the smaller outlets, many of which cater to customers demanding organic products produced as close to home as possible. Consumers in Fernie, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Salmo, Kaslo, Crawford Bay, New Denver, the Slocan Valley, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland and Nelson have been quick to make purchases. Retailers in Vancouver and Calgary are interested in Kootenay Meadows milk and cream, too, but transportation from a community tucked into the southeast corner of the province, just north of the Idaho Panhandle, is a complicating factor. “Our delivery truck (Foster at the wheel, for the time being) is on the road three days a week, 12 hours a day,” Denise said. The addition of a milk-bottling plant has stretched the family’s finances, time and energy resources, but five full-time and six part-time employees are all bene-

fitting from employment that comes through diversification. Nadine, who handles most of the marketing of the farm products, also keeps busy in the fromagerie and bottling plant. (Erin works primarily with the herd and crops.) “So much is about the cleaning,” she laughs. “It’s the less romantic part, but that’s really what takes up a great deal of time and effort.” For Denise, she gets the satisfaction

working side-by-side with her family and employees that she also calls friends. The reward of producing healthy, wholesome dairy products for an appreciative market is immeasurable. She looks out the east windows of the bottling plant and smiles, seeing the herd grazing contentedly just outside the building, with the Skimmerhorn mountain range looming in the background. “How beautiful is that view?” she asks. “What other milk bottling plant has that?”

Theft suspect nabbed

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A male suspect in many break and entries into mostly seasonal residences along Kootenay Lake is in custody, thanks to some quick-thinking victims. The man, described only as a Calgary resident, was recent-

ly released from jail and made a quick return to his old stomping grounds, where he had been responsible for a rash of property crimes three years ago, Cpl. Charlotte Joa said on Monday. Creston RCMP received four reports of break and entering on Fishhawk Bay Road near Gray Creek last Tuesday, before

getting another call from men whose Zodiac was stolen from a boat dock. They saw it out on the lake and gave chase in another boat. They brought the boat, and the suspect, back to shore and held him until police arrived to make an arrest. He was being held in custody until a hearing could be arranged.

As such, all eligible applications for development or redevelopment of a commercial hotel or motel must be made to the Town of Creston on or before July 31, 2013. For further information concerning this program, please call 250-428-2214, ext. 233.

With a little extra effort, recycling saves a lot! One ton of recycled paper saves up to 17 trees. Recycling paper, plastic and metal saves tons of garbage from being put into local landfills. These are just a few of the many reasons to recycle and use recycled products. By cutting down on waste and using more eco-friendly products, we can keep our area and our planet a healthy, beautiful place to live.

Bjorkman shares business experience BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Experience running her own businesses has helped Alison Bjorkman jump headlong into her new job as a business counsellor. “The ability to help people start businesses is exciting,” the local Community Futures representative said last week. “I get to talk to people and get paid to do what I would gladly do for free!” Bjorkman, who ran Black Bear Books for many years, has been “repurposing” old items into stylish furniture and home décor items most recently. Puffin Design (www.puffindesign.ca) is a partnership with another experienced entrepreneur, her husband Bart Bjorkman. They ship items all over the world. “I think people would be amazed at how much time Bart and I spend talking about business,” she laughed. For over 25 years, Community Futures has played a significant role in entrepreneurial and business development throughout the province. It was established by the federal government in response to the severe economic and labour challenges rural Canadian communities were experiencing in the late 1980s. “I have a lot of empathy with my clients,” said Bjorkman, who also makes and sells pottery. “I’ve been operating businesses for a long time — you have to walk the talk. This work inspires me to better use my skills in my own businesses, too.” Starting a business isn’t as simple as having an idea and carrying it out, she said. “People need to know how they want to feel in their lives, why they get up in the morning,” she said. “Running your own business is not easier than having a job, but it has a lot of rewards if it’s done with the right approach. Business people are emotionally connected to what they do.” The “right approach” includes acquiring some basic skills. And creating a business plan. “Before I bought the bookstore I spent months working on a business plan, and it had every component that we teach and cover through Community Futures,” she said. “I knew I had to do it, and I know I can run any business if I have a plan.” The preparation pays off, she said. Statistically, about four of five startup businesses fail. That ratio is reversed for entrepreneurs who take advantage of Community Futures’ services. Locally, Community Futures works closely with Kootenay Employment Services, which offers a wide range of courses and also has a strong history in the Creston Valley. Most of Bjorkman’s 60-hour-a-month position

is taken up with teaching business planning and business management workshops to local entrepreneurs. “The rest of my time is available to do business counselling,” she said. Business loans for new or existing businesses are also available through Community Futures, but they are administered through the organization’s Nelson office. Bjorkman points out that Community Futures has a variety of services for local entrepreneurs and we serve a broad range of clients from anyone interested in starting a business to existing entrepreneurs. To find out how Community Futures can help you, call Bjorkman at 250-4286356.

At a time when local rural residents are mired in a debate about whether the size of parcels of land in the Agricultural Land Reserve should be reduced it is worth noting that a new dairy farm on Wilson Road held an open house on Friday. Why did a family running a successful dairy operation near Chilliwack sell its farm and relocate to the Creston Valley? Here they were able to purchase more than 400 acres on which to establish a new dairy, in an area where there is no threat of residential encroachment that too often creates conflict. People like their meat and milk, but they don’t like the odours and activities associated with farms. Cost, of course, is a huge factor. After talking to Bryan Terpstra, who manages the new farm (the family purchased the property several years ago, but milk production started only last November), and agricultural real estate specialist Gord Houeweling (who handled the property sale), I learned that Creston Valley properties can be purchased for 10 per cent or less than Lower Mainland farm properties, where large parcels are increasingly rare. You don’t have to be a financial whiz to figure out that the Terpstras probably sold their Chilliwack farm, paid for land and construction on the Creston Flats and came out money ahead. The parcel they now live and work on is large enough to accommodate expansion of the milking operation to sustain the younger family members who want a rural way of life and a solid financial future. There are fewer dairies in the Creston Valley now than there were

Housing location poorly thought out To the Editor: A matter of some concern has come to my attention of late, and I would like to voice my concerns and also perhaps alert others to what could happen if it is allowed to continue. A group of well-intentioned individuals has proposed a low-income, subsidized housing complex to be established beside Millennium Park. This is wrong for so many reasons I hardly know where to begin. Has anyone from this group actually looked at the site? It is boundaried by a major arterial street, 16th Avenue; Cedar Street, which services most of South Creston; and the railway tracks, and, of course, would back right up to the fence of Millennium Park. Due to the size of the project, there is absolutely no provision for parking except for the north side of the park, which is already congested with logging trucks, semis, RV parking and a sani dump. This property is currently zoned light commercial and would have to be rezoned multiple family. It also belongs to the citizens of Creston, whom I believe would not want the mayor and

Thanks to all To the Editor: Far too often, I hear tales of woe from relatives, friends and even complete strangers about the shortcomings of B.C.’s health services. As my own recent experience was totally positive, I thought I would share it with readers of the Advance while passing on my thanks to those concerned. I received exemplary care from Drs. Oberleitner and Persad at Creston Valley Hospital’s emergency room, from Dr. Fluss at the Creston Optometric Eye Centre and from Dr. Ho Yuen in Cranbrook for a puzzling, potentially serious, but ultimately happily resolved eye problem. They were all quick, thorough, extremely skilled and, last but by no means least, patient and sympathetic. Warmest thanks to the doctors and their staff. With people of this quality providing care, our public health service is something to be proud of. Martha McLaren West Creston

council to just give it away. Another thing to deal with is the fact that underneath the parking lot is 75-plus years of sawmill waste. I remember it took 120 loads of sawdust, tree stumps and other garbage just to find anything to put the Elks Pavilion on. Presently, there is no infrastructure in place at all, with the exception of some very high voltage underground power lines. At the very least, a complete environmental assessment must be undertaken. One of the reasons Millennium Park is located there is because the area was deemed unsuitable for dwellings of any kind. And then, of course, when Millennium Park was first conceived, it was to be a place of peace and tranquility, a place one could go and celebrate weddings and family gatherings, to study and reflect, to hold concerts, to practice the gentle art of Tai Chi and certainly to showcase a special piece of Creston to the world. If this eight-unit development is allowed to happen where it is proposed, you can kiss all that goodbye. The open space to the south: gone forever. The

peace and quiet: gone forever. The security offered by its proximity to the RCMP station: gone forever. You will now be greeted by the sights and sounds of a social housing development backyard. I just happen to live across the street from a dwelling that seems to seek out the underprivileged as clientele. Have any of you talked to school counsellors about your proposal? The stigma attached to the children who are raised in a social development area usually stays with them for the sum of their schools life; they are often taunted and bullied just because of where they come to school from. This can lead to them becoming dropouts and right down the path from whence they came. I would also be concerned as to the proximity of two open and accessible ponds and the potential danger they impose. I urge all of the citizens of Creston to put the pressure on our mayor and council to perhaps guide these people to a more satisfactory location or solution. Walt Reider Creston

Creston Rotary Club president Don Tarrant presented a cheque for $1,000 to Tyson Steed representing the Grade 6/7 class at Canyon-Lister Elementary School. The class, along with teacher Judy Gadicke, recently travelled from Sandpoint to Seattle by train and then took a ferry from Seattle to Victoria. The students stayed at the University of Victoria and visited the Parliament buildings, the Royal BC Museum, the Shaw Ocean Centre and the Pacific Geoscience Centre. The students worked hard to raise funds with bake sales and pizza sales, and selling poinsettias and Easter flowers. They also had support from the Creston and District Credit Union and Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B to reach their $15,500 goal.

Know and Grow Farm appeals to all ages BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor For many seniors, there was nothing more satisfying than working in the garden, something circumstances may no longer permit. For many youth, gardening is a foreign concept. Without the right circumstances, neither group may have a chance to spend time doing what they love — or could grow to love — but all can receive hands-on gardening opportunities at Know and Grow Farm (formerly the Creston Valley Community Greenhouse) at Creston’s College of the Rockies (COTR) campus. Operation of the farm is currently in transition, with the Friends of the Creston Valley Community Greenhouse Society working toward renting space from COTR, but the farm is busier than ever, having recently wrapped up a series of spring programs catering to teens, children and families, which ran alongside school and seniors programs. The seniors program has been running the longest, dating back to 2006, giving the greenhouse a purpose after the college’s horticulture course was cancelled two years earlier. “The program has always been my favourite, so I just couldn’t let it go,” said Anita Sawyer, who was greenhouse manager from 2008-2012 and now volunteers a morning a week with seniors from the Swan

Valley Lodge day program. The seniors start coming in March each year, and often visit through early December. “In December, they do all the transplanting for the winter harvest,” said Sawyer. “Some of them are so excited to get their hands back in the soil.” They also spend time shelling dried beans or, on one recent day, plucking herbs — including lemon catnip and sage — from their stems, which will go to the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) or the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank. While not a difficult task, it was a new activity for some. “I’m used to harvesting with a chainsaw,” quipped Dan, who used to work on 100 acres of bush. The gardening aspect isn’t always the most important part — some just enjoy the social aspect. “It’s nice to be around good people,” said Harry. “It’s nice to have fun with them.” One senior, Sawyer recalled, refused to miss the program by visiting with out-of-town family — so she brought them with her. “It’s an incredibly meaningful program — they spent so much time feeding and caring for others, and they do less of that later,” said Laura Hannant, COTR facilitator of partnerships for community development, who is volunteering as co-ordinator of the greenhouse society during the transition period.

One program allows the seniors to pass on their knowledge, with TAPS members growing gardens with parents and kids from Family Place, which provides support and activities for families with young children. Kids get to try gardening on their own, too with schools bringing classes during the day, and an afterschool program for ages 10-16, in which participants start plants for their own gardens. Instructors always instruct the nutrition aspect of homegrown food, and Hannant said that the self-esteem that comes from direct connection to their food makes the kids happier to eat it — although some take a while to warm up to the idea. “One boy took till his third time to eat a snack with the others,” she recalled with a smile. The excitement is evident with the briefest look at classes on a scavenger hunt racing around the gardens looking for specific plants — even those washing pots had fun splashing around, with the boys in one group submerging their pots, leading to a discussion about the Titanic. For the farm grounds, plans extend well into the future, with a 1,000-square-metre section reserved for Forest Farm, an outdoor learning space that will be planted with fruit, nuts, berries, shrubs and hardy kiwis, allowing for education in pruning and harvesting. “This whole area, 10 to 15 years from now, will be a magical kingdom of food and berries and fruit,” said Nigel Francis, COTR facilitator of education for food

security. Programs at Know and Grow Farm have led to bigger things off of the COTR campus — students from the Yaqan Nukiy School started potatoes, carrots and corn for a Lower Kootenay Band community garden. “The whole community was invited to come and plant the things they started in the greenhouse,” said Hannant. The farm is now open to people who aren’t in a specific program, with drop-ins welcome each Thursday from 8:30-10 a.m. It’s an excellent opportunity to see the changes made to the greenhouse and gardens in recent months, with landscaping

by Prince Charles Secondary School students, and an arbour built by Kootenay Employment Services’ Experience Workers program. The involvement of other groups is fitting because Know and Grow Farm gives right back to the community. “By running the program, the program creates all this fresh food, and we have all this surplus,” said Francis. “We give it to TAPS and it lowers their costs. There’s a great multiplier there.” Volunteers are always welcome at Know and Grow Farm. For more information, contact Laura Hannant at 250-428-5332 ext. 4181 or lhannant@cotr.bc.ca.

Healthy soil builds up your garden Just as plants need good light, heat and water to grow healthy, they also need a good source of nutrients. While chemical fertilizer does the job of feeding nutrients to the plant, what it doesn’t do is enrich the soil. One doesn’t have to be too aware to have a general sense of the state of politics surrounding our food these days (genetically modified/natural/ organic/conventional) or that the conventional methods of farming are stripping the land of one our most precious resources, topsoil. While large scale monocrop farming may be depleting our soil, the good news is that you can build your own! Composting is a great and relatively easy way you can do this. Turn your organic

waste into healthy compost and add it into your garden, building humus (brokendown organic matter) and offering food to the local earthworms who will further

needed, keeping your soil and your plants healthy. Another great incentive to build healthy soil which produces healthier plants is that they will be more resistant to pests and disease. You can find lots of great soil additives such as blood meal, bone meal, kelp meal, fish fertilizers, compost, mycorrhiza (fungi) and other organic fertilizers at garden centres that will help you along in the process. It takes time but if you garden in the Creston Valley you will likely know how much time it takes to work up clay soil, and the more you build that humus layer up, the easier your soil will be to work with. benefit your soil with their ultra-nutritious castings. Mycorrhizal fungi is another super-beneficial component to add to your garden as it helps most plants (brassicas excluded) take up more nutrient. Mycorrhizal fungi has been described as both the immune system and the information highway of Earth — sending information and nutrient to where it is most

LocaL News & opiNioN Mindfulness can help change self-judgments

Creston Valley Advance Thursday, June 27, 2013

How many times have you seen what you don’t want to see, instead of what is, when you stand in front of a mirror? It’s not easy to drop critical judgments about our bodies. Successful marketing of everything from clothes to cleaning products depends on convincing us that there is something wrong with us. In an economy driven by consumerism it is not surprising that so many of us have integrated a deep-seated insecurity about our bodies. We live as if there were a perfect way for all bodies to be and lose mindfulness of how remarkable our bodies actually are. We forget that they can walk, talk, sit and reach up for things. They can calculate distance, digest food and recognize objects through touch. We are walking miracles of perfection just as we are. Mindfulness of thought processes can help us to drop selfjudgments about our bodies. If we notice ourselves commenting on how we are too fat, too thin, too tall, too short, or too ugly, we don’t buy into those thoughts — we just notice them and drop them, then come back to direct awareness of what our

Cook up some Canada Day fun As the second-largest country in the world, Canada has much to celebrate. Each and every year, Canadians gather to commemorate Canada Day on July 1. Frequently called Canada’s birthday, Canada Day, previously known as Dominion Day, marks the joining of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on July 1, 1867. It wasn’t until July 1, 1917 that the first official Canada Day celebration was held to mark this day of independence. Offices, banks, schools, and many businesses are closed on Canada Day. Some stores may remain open to cater to bargain-hunting Canada Day shoppers.

Should an American visit Canada on Canada Day, he or she might mistake it for America’s own Independence Day. Celebrations of both holidays are similar, with parades, fireworks, concerts, and special outdoor events. Friends and families gather for barbecues and pool parties while the red-andwhite flag of the country flies in the breeze. Though the celebrations are similar, Canadians can add their own measure of gusto to Canada Day parties and gatherings with foods that are inspired by Canada. Think about serving these culinary delights at the next Canada Day celebration.

We put that

* Classic Quebec Poutine: The traditional poutine is served with a pile of crispy french fries topped with a handful of cheddar curds and a chicken- or veal-based gravy. The french fries can be made from Prince Edward Island potatoes, while cheese curds traditionally are made from the Frommage Beaucronne brand. This comfort food can be enjoyed by children and adults alike and served as an appetizer before more substantial fare is served. * Maple candies: Maple syrup is exported from the country, and a maple leaf adorns the national flag. Celebrants can pay homage to the maple tree by serving foods that feature maple syrup in some way. Mix several cups of maple syrup with 1/3 cup butter and a teaspoon of lemon extract. Bring to a boil until a candy thermometer reads 233 F, roughly 111 C. Allow to cool a few minutes and pour into candy molds. Let cool and harden, then enjoy. * Moose burgers: Rather

than cooking beef or bison burgers, opt for moose meat. Moose are the largest members of the deer family, and this wild game can be an alternative to the standard meats. Moose meat is a lean source of protein and has less than one gram of total fat per serving. Ground moose meat can be used to form burgers cooked over the grill. * Salmon specialities: For a different take on barbecue, try grilled salmon harvested from waters in British

Columbia. Salmon is a hearthealthy food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which also promote brain health. Maplecrusted salmon may be a way to meld two Canadian flavors together in one meal. There are a number of different ways to incorporate new food traditions into Canada Day celebrations. Experiment with the flavors you love and pay tribute to the rich tradition of Canada. TF136249

Vancouver rockers return with fond memories SUBMITTED

In the final moments of a performance in Creston last August, No Island guitarist and vocalist Keith Sinclair remarked that he and his bandmates would never forget the place. So when it came time for the Vancouver indie fivesome to plan this summer’s tour, it’s no surprise that the Snoring Sasquatch was the first venue they called. The group will return there on Friday, July 5 to kick off a seven-week trek across Canada. “Coming back here was really high on our priority list,” said keyboardist and vocalist Andy Rice. “Everyone we met in Creston was so generous and welcoming to us. It was certainly my favourite show of the tour, and I think everyone else’s as well.” The concert also left a local crowd smitten, buzzing over the band’s unique songs, expert musicianship and engaging live show. It’s an act No Island has refined even further over the past year, adding new songs and new members as well. “We’re really excited to introduce Jay Esplana and Max Ley,

our new bass player and drummer,” said Rice. “Those guys bring a whole new energy and charisma to the music, and if we weren’t rocking hard enough before, we certainly are now.” Saxophonist James Wilfred Martin, who started the band with Sinclair back in 2009, remains a unique contributor to the group’s sound as both a soloist and harmonic texture. No Island’s musical style reflects a love for old and new, drawing inspiration from the classic rock era but also some more modern influences on the indie circuit. “I always have a tough time describing what it is we do,” said Rice, “but you can expect five frontmen, two lead singers, four-part harmonies, original songs and hopefully a couple that you’ll find stuck in your head the next day.” While the group typically plays with amplification, Rice said that they are also planning to unplug for some acoustic tunes and may even throw in a few covers. “It’ll be an interactive show with lots of variety,” he explained. “Playing at a musicfocused venue like the Snoring

READY TO ROCK: Vancouver band No Island has crafted a unique sound that blurs the lines between genres and generations. Members [from left] Max Ley, Keith Sinclair, James Wilfred Martin, Andy Rice, and Jay Esplana will perform on Friday, July 5 at the Snoring Sasquatch.

Sasquatch allows us to stretch out more and do some of the songs we rarely get to do in bars and clubs. With two sets, there will be plenty of time to show some different sides of the band, tip our hat to a few of our influences, and even give a little

glimpse into the songwriting process.” Tickets for An Evening with No Island are $10 in advance and $13 at the door. They are available at the Snoring Sasquatch, Kingfisher Quality Used books, and Black Bear

Books. Doors will open at 7 pm and the band will take to the stage at 8. For more information, readers may visit www.snoringsasquatch.com. Video and audio tracks featuring No Island can be found on their website, www. no-island.com.

Hunger is a problem for all of us – not just those who experience hunger first hand. Hunger and malnutrition undermine all other humanitarian and development goals. According to the World Food Program every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5% to 10% in lifetime earnings. The cost of under-nutrition to national economic development is estimated at $20 to $30 billion per year.

Students get support COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES

Thanks to reader Heather Galloway for this photo of the train track washout at Wynndel last week. Crews were on the scene within hours to begin repairs.

College of the Rockies health care assistant student Garth Penner recently received a bursary in honour of Garth and Carrie Oko. Presented by Kory Oko, this bursary is a celebration of his parents’ lives. Carrie was a nurse in the Creston Valley, moving here with Garth in 1973. She had a special gift of nursing, and her passion for compassionate care was a huge influence in the teaching and mentoring of the College HCA students. Garth was an orchardist extraordinaire, often donating a box of fruit to the students at the college. People loved to work for him, for not only was he fair and honest, but he was kind and had a great wry sense of humour. COTR extends its appreciation to Kory and Chad Oko for honouring their parents with a legacy like this, which helps a student achieve a goal of becoming a health care assistant, caring for people with kindness and compassion. The Creston Valley Gleaners Society once again presented two deserving students, Tammy Ahlefeld and Jordan Koop, with bursaries of $1,000 each. Gleaners is operated by approximately 100 volunteers, all with the goal of lending a hand where most needed. Anybody who has visited either Gleaners or Gleaners Too will be amazed at the quality and variety their stores have. Besides housing the food bank and a large array of good quality clothing and merchandise, Gleaners also supports the community with much more. Every year donations are allocated to help seniors, children, pets — anybody in need. COTR extends its appreciation to Gleaners for its generous support for the health care assistant students. Gleaners is always looking for more volunteers, and as Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

The 1746 44 Royal Canadian Engineers Cadet Corps celebrated their 57th anniversary with their annual ceremonial review at the Lower Kootenay Band (LKB) complex on June 1. The reviewing officer for this monument occasion was Chief Jason Louie, who was confined in a charity jail at the Relay For Life. In his place, LKB Coun. Robin Louie. Every Army cadet corps across Canada holds this event in May or June. It consists of a parade and inspection by a senior military officer or civilian dignitary and provides the cadets with a vehicle to display the talents that they have acquired throughout the year. It is also an opportunity for the parents and families of cadets to see exactly what it is their young adults have accomplished while in the cadet program. As well, it is an opportunity for us to thank the local community for their support and to recognize exceptional performance on the part of selected cadets. Royal Canadian Army Cadets are not members of the Canadian Forces, nor are they ever expected to be.

Students at the College of the Rockies’ main campus in Cranbrook celebrated their graduation from the University of Victoria’s East Kootenay teacher education program (bachelor of education degree) on April 13. Among the graduates was Creston’s Stephanie McDowell, who joined her classmates in sharing some inspirational thoughts on what being a teacher means to them.
