children for the KidSprint event as well as numerous volunteers and spectators and this year 156 meals were served. “We try and get numbers as best we can from the rec department,” Burch explains. “Everything we buy locally and we just have to be prepared to feed around 200 people, although this year it was a little less.” Lilly Bryant, program services co-ordinator for Grand
Forks Recreation, says the potatoes and chili are becoming a draw for athletes. “The athletes look forward to that post-triathlon meal with the Rotary and the club has been providing it probably for the last eight years,” Bryant said. Bryant explained that the recreation department pays a percentage per plate to the Grand Forks Rotary Club, who in turn uses proceeds for the community.

So when the recreation department started the triathlon, the Rotary club was no longer doing the Bikeathon and they asked us to do the potato/ chili feed,” Burch explained. “It’s very popular, so every year the (rec department) asks us to do it and we’re happy to do that.” A lot of organizing and cooking goes into providing the food – there were about 83 adult athletes, 38

Nelson deems food waste disposal wasteful, eco-inefficient Nelson Staff West Kootenay Advertiser
The City of Nelson wants to increase the number of homes composting their food waste, as a way to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with hauling household waste to the landfill. With the new transfer station near Pacific Insight slated to open next spring, the garbage collection crew will have to drive a few extra kilometres to drop off their loads. If there’s less garbage, the trucks could be emptied less frequently and therefore burn less fuel. And there’s other benefits, as Councillor Paula Kiss pointed out at last week’s city council meeting where she spoke in favour of a motion to form a new committee to oversee an assessment of composting options for the city. “Organics are a re-
source ... the byproduct is soil we can use in the city parks,” Kiss said. The motion was proposed by Councillor Donna Macdonald, who also recommended that a consultant be hired to complete the assessment and paid an amount not exceeding $15,000, using money from the Recycling Reserve Account. The majority of council supported the motion, though Mayor John Dooley tried to advice them against it. Dooley sits on the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s resource recovery plan advisory committee. He said the RDCK plans to start a feasibility study for a centralized composting facility in 2014. “Why would we pay for one [study for Nelson] when we’re already paying for one by the Regional District? “It’s paying for the
same thing twice,” Dooley said. Several councillors were concerned the RDCK wouldn’t stick to its timeline and, if the study was done, it would assume organics would be processed at the Ootischenia landfill near Castlegar. Kiss added that the city’s not paying twice if the respective studies look at different things. “If our preferred option is local processing, it will help us to have done our research on that, so we can give that information to the RDCK when they start their study,” Kiss said. Councillor Deb Kozak, the only one to oppose the motion when it came time to vote, suggested the decision be put off until the next budget cycle so that all options for how to fund it could be considered. Councillor Robin Cherbo said the local study might end up saving the city mon-
ey by reducing the amount of material in the waste stream. “There might be home-based composting solutions that don’t involve the city picking up [the organics] at all,” Cherbo said. In Macdonald’s proposal, she outlined that the composting assessment should include consideration of various scales of composting (home, neighbourhood, community-wide or a combination), technologies and methods available and a cost analysis for each, what type of organics should be accepted, and how Nelson’s plan would fit with existing waste and recycling collection. The committee to oversee the assessment will consist of three Nelson councillors, two members of the public, one representative from the RDCK, and one City of Nelson staff member.

The City of Trail has been saving for a rainy day, and this year it’s time to spend some of the nest egg. A memorandum of the city’s 2012 financial audit was reviewed at Monday night council, and the report revealed a surplus of cash and a hefty savings account. “We have been building up our capital over the years,” said Mayor Dieter Bogs. “Now we are in a good financial place to be able to start investing in some major improvements, especially in the downtown.” Most notable is the $1.2 million earmarked for the Victoria Street Corridor gateway project, set to begin this summer. “The city is in a healthy position,” said Craig Teindl, City of Trail auditor from L. Soligo & Associates Ltd. “This refers to the fact that as of Dec. 31, 2012, the city had enough cash and investments to pay off all the debt and still have some cash left over.” The annual audit gives an overall picture of how the city is running, looking at it’s consolidated revenue by taking into account its general
operations, such as water and sewer operations, and staff and capital funds. The financial report memorandum, which is available for public viewing at trail.ca, notes a 2012 surplus of almost $2 million. Another eye-catching figure noted in the report is the city’s $10 million in cash and short term investments. “Cash and shortterm investments are liquid assets of the city that may be used to fund operations or capital,” explained David Perehudoff, chief administrative officer. “Strong cash balances allow the city to operate without having to borrow short-term during certain times of the year when cash is not coming in.” More good news noted in the city’s financial statements is its growing accumulated surplus, now $85 milllion. “Accumulated surplus is basically the net value of the city that has been built up over time,” explained Perehudoff. He said it is not specific to one year, but accumulated since the city has been in operation, and in relation to the private sector, equivalent to retained earnings.
Thieves jeopardize Scouts trip The Beaver Valley Scouts have relied on bottle drives to help fund outings and projects over the years but a spate of recent thefts might leave them short of cash for an upcoming trip. In the most recent incident over the May long weekend an estimated $400 worth of recyclable materials was lost to bottle thieves. Area scouts have been raising money to help pay part of the $1,000 per person cost of attending the Canadian National Jamboree, which is being held in Sylvan Lake, Alta., the second week of July. Because these gatherings only happen every four years the anticipation for the local troops has been growing as the date grew nearer, now the kids will have to work a little harder to cover the cost. “The kids are understandably upset,” said local scout volunteer, Heather Hamer. “It’s just that much more money that they’re going to have to raise before they can go on their trip.” Hamer said that people have been dropping off bottles and cans at her property in Beaver Falls
for years to support the trip and Camp Tweedsmuir, the local the scout camp in Fruitvale. The materials are stored until they can be sorted and taken in for recycling. The first loss occurred only last year when a couple of bags were taken. This year the thieves have stepped up their activity. “We’ve been hit three times,” said Hamer. “Half of our latest bottle drive is gone.” The incidents have been reported to the RCMP and Hamer is waiting to hear if anyone has been questioned on the matter. “We have had two incidents reported from the same location, both occurring in early June,” said Sgt. Rob Hawton of the Trail and Greater District RCMP. Accident knocks out power to Grand Forks Grand Forks staff West Kootenay Advertiser
Parts of Grand Forks were without power after an accident at the local landfill on the morning of June 19. Areas of Riverside Drive were affected, as well as most of downtown, Valley Heights and the industrial area of Grand Forks. Hal Wright, City of Grand Forks manager of operations, estimated half the
city was affected. According to some merchants on downtown’s Market Avenue, power was restored to that area around 1 p.m. that afternoon. Wright said the accident involved an excavator clipping wires and pulling down a pole at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) garbage dump on Granby Road. Trail teen takes triathlon

Not only was Trail’s Jackson Konkin the first out of the water for the swimming portion of the race, he finished in a time of 1:19:26, first overall and tops in the male category and amongst his age group (13 to 18 years).

BC Transit customers will enjoy a free ride July 2 to coincide with the official launch of the West Kootenay Transit Committee’s new integrated regional system. The committee, which brought together three local governments and nine transit systems last year, await the unveiling of one single rider’s guide that covers transit from Nakusp to Rossland and from Kaslo to Fruitvale. “Public transit is quite expensive for a rural area when we’ve got such a wide geography we’re dealing with so it’s all about efficiencies and effectiveness and if we can pool our fleet and basically make a system that works for the whole area, it becomes much more efficient,” explained Rossland’s Kathy Wallace, committee vice chair. “The other big thing is creating a service that works from the rider’s perspective. That’s what the whole direction has been. It’s way easier to understand, there’s one rider’s guide for the whole region.” The committee has now created three

zones for the entire region, including the Columbia zone — which melds Castlegar, Trail, Fruitvale, Rossland and the former Kootenay Boundary service — meaning people can ride anywhere in the zone for one rate. The other two zones — Slocan zone (Playmor Junction up to Slocan City) and the Kootenay zone, which includes Nelson — can be accessed by the all-zone or regional pass. Prior to the change, people had to pay two top ups, paying as much as $5.50 to travel across the multiple service areas,
and consult several different ride guides to figure out how to get there. Now the local zone fare for Greater Trail stays at $2 but will include Castlegar, while the all-zone fare is $3.50, down from $4. “For our service in particular, we were already a regional service in that all of the communities were already participating and we were already doing what we could to expand the service to Castlegar,” explained John MacLean, chief administrative officer for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. “There
were challenges up in Central Kootenay in that they have five different services and trying to match the needs of each one of those services with a regional model was a bit of a challenge but the partners made it happen.” The goal of the committee was to develop a transit system for the area, where someone can get on a bus in Trail and travel straight through to Castlegar, the Slocan Valley, Nakusp, or Nelson and all points in between. The advantage of the regional system is that pooling the transit resources of many
smaller communities reduces the operational cost for all and provides greatly increased convenience for people. MacLean could not provide an estimate on how much money will be saved now that transit is taking an integrated approach but does foresee savings downstream. “I think what it does is it helps us control cost through the sharing of resources and spare busses and everything else,” he said. “That’s what the big benefit will be. That it will actually lower costs, that will be very difficult to say.”

Kerry Saari is about to take a nice stroll in beautiful surroundings… nothing unusual about that. Well, it does happen to be a hike of 88 kilometres including some extreme changes in altitude (climbing) and it needs to be done in 32 hours. That makes it kind of unusual. Plus, she’s starting out by contributing $5,000 for the privilege. Now that’s something you don’t see with a lot of fundraisers, but that’s how much Kerry believes in Canadian Tire’s ‘Jumpstart’ program.
Just a reminder that all funds raised remain within the community, used for children ages 3-18. Kerry has been on a training program since last December to make sure she’s prepared for the hike in the Rocky Mountains which is set for early September. Kerry’s goal (along with completing the hike injury-free, of course) is to round up pledges equal to or greater than her own five grand… with all of the money going to the program designed to give more kids (age 4-18) the benefit of access to organized sports and recreation. It’s no secret that there is much to be gained by kids from getting involved in activity including hockey, dance, soccer and swimming. These and other such pursuits are well known for helping youngsters develop important life skills,

Drive up to Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna and your first impression might be that you are entering a theme park, or perhaps an alternate universe. A gigantic bottle of bubbly seems to float in the air as its contents pour perpetually into a huge champagne flute. A huge pyramid sits front and centre. In the owner’s words, “The Summerhill Pyramid is second only to the Great Pyramid of Egypt for alignment and precision.” Welcome to the weird and very wonderful world of Stephen Cipes. In my experience, winery owners are mostly down-toearth farm folks, deadly serious about their business, one that depends entirely on the land. Stephen Cipes, by contrast, is part New York hippie, part New Age guru and part extremely canny businessman. In a business world
La Dolce Vita that encourages conformity, Cipes is an ethereal philosopher who sees the big picture, big in the way that astronaut Chris Hadfield saw it from his space station. Behind the scenes in what Cipes and his family have built into Canada’s most visited winery is a leader in environmental responsibility. Organic certification in the vineyards was followed in 2007 by certification, Canada’s first, in the winery. That’s no mean feat because the winemaking process typically relies on things like fish bladders, gelatin, egg whites, milk, and milk by-products, primarily to clarify wine. In 2012 it also received biodynamic certification in the vineyards, an approach to growing that I’ll leave curious readers to research themselves. It led to

Through the Walls of Time It’s no stretch of the imagination how Birchbank was named GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Seventeenth in a (primarily) alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Birchbank, north of Trail, was originally known as Sullivan or Sullivan Siding, after Sullivan Creek, which in turn was likely named after John Godfrey Sul-
livan (1863-1938), chief assistant engineer of the Columbia and Western railway, who went on to become the CPR’s chief engineer of western lines. He designed the Connaught Tunnel through the Rockies and was assistant engineer on construction of the Panama Canal. He later served on Winnipeg city council and re-
ceived an honourary doctorate from the University of Manitoba. Sullivan first appears as a Columbia and Western Railway stop on a schedule dated November 21, 1897 and printed in the Slocan Pioneer of December 11, 1897. In 1912 the name was changed to Birchbank, after the Anderson ranch on the bluff above the
railway line. According to a 1969 issue of Cominco Magazine, the name was chosen when residents failed to get post office approval for the name Sullivan — although why is hazy. Possibly an application had already been filed for Sullivan Station around New Westminster, but it didn’t open until 1913. The ranch and railway siding were also
variously known as Birchfield and Birchbrook. The earliest known mention of Birchbrook is in the Nelson Daily News of October 15, 1910, while an item in the Rossland Miner of January 8, 1913 said: “Harry Anderson, of Birchbrook Orchards, has left for Pullman …” Further confusing matters, a 1912 map showed Birchfield

and Sullivan Station as separate places, while a billhead in the Cominco papers at the BC Provincial Archives dated August 15, 1917 reads: “Birchbrook Orchards. Shipping point, Sullivan, BC. Birchbank post office. J.D. Anderson, owner; Harry Anderson, manager, Birchbank, BC.”
In 1912 the name was changed to Birchbank after the Anderson Ranch on the bluff above the railway line The Birchbank post office opened on May 1, 1912 and closed June 30, 1929. Today Birchbank is synonymous with the Rossland-Trail Country Club golf course and nearby picnic grounds. And yes, there are still many birch trees in the area. BIRCHDALE

Birchdale, a tiny spot south of Johnsons Landing on the east shore of Kootenay Lake’s north arm, was home to English
brothers Noel (18881960) and Eric (18991973) Bacchus. The community was formerly known as McIntyre’s Landing or McIntyres Landing after William Stuart McIntyre (1885-1979), an English farmer who came to Canada in 1909 and lived at his namesake landing as of 1911. An early mention is in The Kootenaian of January 8, 1914, concerning a resolution by the Kaslo Conservatives Association that “an additional light be placed on the headland immediately south of McIntyre’s Landing.” The earliest use of Birchdale is in The Kootenaian of June 17, 1926: “McIntyres Landing will in future be known as Birchdale. In order to avoid misunderstandings for the present I should be obliged if business houses would bill shipments Birchdale (late McIntyres) until August 1 after which date McIntyres Landing in brackets can be omitted. – Noel Bacchus” While the name hasn’t disappeared entirely, it’s not in widespread use.

For those looking to have a home energy assessment done, the City of Rossland will contribute $25 for the first 100 homeowners that sign up off of the cost of $60. All homes must do an initial audit to identify necessary work, and a postwork audit to certi-
fy that the work was done. During the initial assessment, a certified energy advisor (CEA) will install energy saving features, such as energy efficient lighting, low flow shower heads, and pipe insulation. Around $1.6 million was spent in the local economy the winter of phase one and it is estimated
that 340 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions were avoided in the city with a 20-50 per cent reduction on home energy bills. Rossland will receive almost $10,000 in Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) grants in 2013. Over two thirds of the funding has been allocated to do energy audits of the arena
and City Hall. The remaining funds (approximately $2,500) will be allocated to the initiative to lower the initial energy audit to 100 Rosslanders. Castlegar, Grand Forks and Trail have committed to pay $25 towards the first 100 participants to register as well. The City of Rossland will be credited
with having invested in the program, meaning the city could claim the credits generated. The city needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 400 tonnes to meet its requirement. Homeowners can complete an online application form and submit it within the next four weeks. Once people are registered, Fortis-
BC will help them through the next steps, conducting an initial home energy assessment with a certified energy advisor, make a commitment to complete at least one home energy efficiency upgrade before Dec. 31, complete a post-retrofit evaluation before March 31, 2014 and keep all retrofit receipts and submit at the post retrofit

Forestry harvest levels upped submitted
Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations NELSON - Five companies in an innovative forestry practices agreement have had their combined allowable annual cut raised by 22,000 cubic metres per year, a 6.3 per cent increase effective Jan. 1, 2012, until Dec. 31, 2015. The regional executive director awarded the increase after reviewing their application, forestry plan, timber supply analysis, and considering public and First Nations input. Updated inventory work was the primary forest practice that supported the in-
crease. This increase does not affect the allowable annual cut for the Arrow timber supply area, which remains unchanged at 550,000 cubic metres. The five affected licensees are ATCO Wood Products Ltd., Kalesnikoff Lumber Co. Ltd., International Forest Products Ltd., Stella-Jones Canada Inc. and Tolko Industries Ltd. The agreement area covers 605,600 hectares within the Arrow timber supply area. Under the agreement, licensees conduct activities above their basic forestry management obligations with a view to improve timber productivity. Under delegated authority of the Forest Act, the ministry’s

Licence holders must comply with conditions of the increase, the agreement, the Forest Act, the Forest and Range Practices Act and other relevant legislation. He was gracious, articulate and generous with his time. As the interview was about to end, his son Gabe entered the room. Stephen put his phone on speaker mode and had Gabe explain about how Summerhill was embarking on biodynamics. He was as bright and genuine as his dad. Over the years, Summerhill has built a great reputation with its sparkling wines—the reason Cipes got into the business in the first place—and has won head-to-head competitions against French Champagnes. But founding winemaker Eric von Krosigk, who recently returned to Summerhill, sets a high bar for all the wines produced. I recently sampled two wines that will be of interest to consumers who want organic products, as well as those who have adverse reactions (headaches, stuffed nasal passages) to most wine. Ezra Cipes, Gabe’s brother, is CEO at Summerhill now, says
that Alive, which is made in red and white versions, is a new line designed to fit in with a healthy lifestyle. “One of the things that our most loyal customers tell us is that they choose Summerhill because when they drink organic, they don’t suffer certain reactions that they associate with conventional wine. These are wines that will still love you in the morning (unless you abuse them, of course, but perhaps I’m taking the metaphor too far),” he says. 2012 Alive white is a very satisfying blend of 70 per cent Pinot Gris, 15 per cent Pinot Blanc, 5 per cent Gewurztraminer, five per cent Viognier, three per cent Chardonnay and two per cent Muscat. With only 10.4 per cent alcohol content, this is a great introductory wine for people who think they don’t like wine. We drank our first glass on the patio after work one evening, then finished it off with baked ribs and mashed potatoes with asparagus. It has bursting with floral aromas, and has a lovely, full mouth feel
with sufficient acidity to complement most any kind of food. 2012 Alive red is a blend I haven’t come across before, with 50 per cent Marechal Foch, 34 per cent Merlot and 15 per cent Syrah. With 24 months in French and American Oak barrels, this is a wine that will make a happy addition to grilled meats and vegetables, as well as anything with a tomato sauce. Expect notes of blackberry, black currant, leather and plum from this wine that clocks in with a 14.1 per cent alcohol content. Both Alive wines should be available at BC Liquor Stores. The Summerhill Pyramid Winery story is, deservedly, now part of our provincial lore. It’s been a remarkable success on many levels and has help draw countless tourists to the Okanagan. Each spring, animals are faced with an unnecessary danger: cosmetic pesticides. These chemicals are used to control unwanted weeds and make lawns and gardens more attractive, but it’s increasingly clear that these benefits come at the expense of human and animal health. The World Health Organization and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have published studies linking pesticide exposure to certain types of cancer. More than 39 B.C. municipalities -- including Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Maple Ridge, Whistler and Kelowna -- have adopted bylaws to ban cosmetic pesticide use due to the risks to humans, pets and wildlife. However, without province-wide legislation to prevent the sale of cosmetic pesticides it’s likely that consumers will continue to buy them. The BC SPCA has joined the Canadian Cancer Society in calling for a ban on the use and sale of cosmetic pesticides in B.C. The ban would encompass private lawns as well as sports fields, parks and playgrounds. “Seven other provinces have already banned the sale of cosmetic pesticides and we believe B.C. should follow suit,” says Geoff Urton, manager of stakeholder relations for the BC SPCA. “The chemicals used in these products are highly toxic and present real risks to the health and well-being of our pets and wildlife species.” Pets, like children, are at greater risk from pesticide exposure because they are closer to the ground. Worse, though, is the fact that animals can easily consume the chemicals used in products that kill weeds. “If your dog or cat steps on grass that’s been treated with pesticides, the next time he licks his paws he is ingesting poison,” says Geoff Urton. “Or imagine a mother robin pulling a pesticide-covered worm from your lawn and feeding it to her newly-hatched offspring.” It’s estimated that 25 per cent of B.C. households with a lawn or garden still use cosmetic pesticides. Until a pesticide ban is in place, take precautions to protect the animals in your care:

Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. the knees. The top half is solid, with a strong rounded, horizontal form at the top, countering the long vertical that makes up ‘Standing Figure’. Nominal feet protrude at the bottom of the piece. It is an abstract but beautifully worked sculpture that “represents the duality that makes up who we are, embracing the balance, morning and night,” as Petersen explains on the nameplate.

Christopher Petersen’s entry to Sculpturewalk this year is strong and simple. The Argenta-based sculptor (and colleague of repeat presenter Spring Shine) presents a ten foot high form made from concrete that provides distinct contrast between exposed aggregate and smooth concrete. Austere yet elegant, the figure is distinguished by a line that runs halfway up, creating the impression of two legs tightly together and slightly bent at
“I try to challenge the [viewers] imagination with simple forms and complex texture,” he says matter-of-factly. “ I became interested in sculpture while working on heavy timber house construction. There are obvious similarlities, though of course in the latter you are following blueprints, working in a set fashion. Sculpting frees me up from pre-determined lines and forms.” Petersen moved from Vancouver Island to the relative solitude of Argenta over twenty years ago and feels the tightknit community and surrounding nature suit him just fine.

This year, he exhibits something different, a wall mount he’s titled ‘Green Man’. It’s a pretty apt description – the patinas in the sculpture literally resonate. ‘Green Man’ reveals the advances in Kloc’s style and interpretation. It’s a work that is enigmatic, cryptic and brilliantly imaginative.
‘Standing Figure’ reflects the refinement Petersen has developed in his abstraction. He has created a work that exemplifies what he seeks to achieve, regardless of the medium he is working in: wood, concrete or stone.
Elaborate, and influenced by his Eastern European (re-acquainting with his roots) sojourn, the bust is transfixing. Nominally a leering, scowling face, the devil is in the details. Literally, it is a scary good sculpture. A grimacing face is distinguishable, featuring a hooked, prominent nose above an imagined moustache and spindly, pointed, satanic-like goatee. Wild, crazed hair envelops the face and hides images and discernments within it. Imagination and interpretation drives Kloc’s work. This is even more powerfully realized in ‘Green Man’. Illusory masks, faces, objects and items are potentially hidden within the tangled, enveloping demonic hair and face.
His sculpture is deceptively straightforward at first glance, but closer inspection reveals the textures and flow it exhibits. ‘Standing Figure’ is a fine example of the challenge Petersen offers the viewers, along with the appreciation gained from close study of his captivating, charismatic work displayed here. Daniel Kloc ‘Green Man’ (bronze) Daniel Kloc returns again with another finely detailed, beautiful bronze for us to enjoy. Think back two years ago: Kloc scooped top prize in the Artistic Merit category for his brooding, artful work Raven. Last year he presented Chieftain, a head and shoulders bronze that again displayed his elaborate, finely honed sculptural style. Refined through study, and a spell at an Okanagan metalwork’s foundry, he traveled overseas to learn and absorb. The end result is Kloc’s transformation into his own artistic persona, showing unique and distinctive style with every sculpture he produces.
The waves of cascading hair offer up hidden imagery, or do they? At the top of the mane, a split-faced, mask-like apparition seems visible. Who is to really say though? Is there something recognized there, or is it simply imagination? It is part of the brilliance and cleverness of the sculpture; continued viewing reveals all to some, little to others. It’s really all in what the mind/
viewer perceives, as Kloc is happy to have it. “I like to think this sculpture synthesises my main influences,” he says. “Obviously my background and time spent in Eastern Europe is an influence, particularly in the stylization. I’ve been swayed by works I’ve seen in my travels, especially old world European frescos. “At the same time, I’ve added other inspirations into the ‘Green Man’. You can see bits of nature here, and certainly some of the primitive art from other cultures – some ancient and others modern – that guide my vision. I’ve attempted to work a lot of my influences into a wall mount that is necessarily detailed and complex. We’ll see how it is received.” It’s safe to say that the complexity, detail and imagery Kloc incorporates into the phantasmagoric work he presents this year will be as enthusiastically received as his previous entries. He is a talented sculptor influenced by equal parts past and present. Always though, he is unique and inventive - his own artist. SPONSORED by

Tip of the Week: The Water Snake is living up to its name. Massive flooding all over the world, immense tornadoes, raging fires, in-land hurricanes and devastating anomalies occurring all over the world has our collective attention. The Snake is considered a karmic sign in Chinese Astrology. It refers to change, transformation, purification, death, rebirth and renewal. In Western Astrology all the signs are there as well in the planetary line-up. This phase of activity is unlikely to slow down soon, in fact, the momentum will likely increase. It is not that the planetary line-up or the Water Snake causes these events to occur. The keyword is synchronicity. This means that the signs revealed in these alignments and the overlapping cycles they refer to are signs more than they are causes. What ‘causes’ a thing to be or an event to happen is one of the most fundamental questions humanity has ever posed and not everyone is satisfied that we have found the answers yet. Religious authorities have forever simply said that it is the work of God. Even staunch scientists refer to the ravages of nature to be ‘acts of God’. What exactly is meant by the term God is also up for debate and has been a source of suffering, forever it seems. The clash of interpretations wrapped in emotionally charged belief has and continues to produce actual warfare between some of the many religions in the world. This is why some scientists have and continue to work so hard to wipe out the notion of a God. Yet, many assert that replacing the notion of God with a materialistic philosophy is not only limiting, it is even more dangerous. Astrology works by virtue of an intelligence woven into creation, an all pervasive consciousness. Call it what you will, there is certainly intelligent design in nature and therefore a designer. The current questions remain regarding what causes cataclysms. Saying that it is all a part of the grand design of nature and occurs according to cycles is something most people will agree upon. As it is, humanity is suffering and what the world needs now is love, love, love…. Some would say it is the best word to describe the primary cause and it is also a key feature of the cure.

Going away to camp can be the highlight of a child’s year: after all, a cabin full of friends and non-stop fun without parental rules seems like a great proposition. But the idea of being away from home can also be daunting to children-especially
for those who’ve never been before-and can stir up feelings of anxiety and a fear of the unknown. Emotionally preparing your kids for camp is just as important as packing that extra sweater and raincoat. Amidst the lastminute panic to get ready, it’s also a step that can easily be forgotten.
Help your child gear up for summer camp physically and emotionally with tried and true tactics to ensure summer fun. Get kids involved. Engaging kids in the decisions about their camp experience is a great way to prepare them emotionally. Help kids feel more confident and relaxed by allowing
them some say in the choosing of the camp, the amount of time away from home and the activities they can register for. Practice, practice, practice. Having short, overnight trips away from home can be a great way to prepare a child for a longer stay at camp. “Camping out” overnight at a friend’s or family member’s
house allows a child to test the waters of separation in a comfortable and familiar environment. Kids can also practice writing letters during this time. If email isn’t an option, you can provide prestamped, pre-addressed envelopes and paper before children leave home to make the task of writing a letter that
much easier. Leave on a good note. Stay positive when dropping a child off at camp. Avoid using phrases like, “I hope all goes well” or, “What will I do without you?” as they can leave a child worried that something bad might happen while away from home. Looking for support? You and your
