Will be missed - Youngsters gathered around Sue Charles to wish her well in retirement following an assembly at Poplar Ridge School last Friday. She’s been providing Band-Aids, magic cream, phone calls home and best of all lots of hugs to students for the past 23 years. During the afternoon Rylee Richels read the poem Angel at the Door, Grade 1 students starred in a video, Grade 4 students recited the poem “Sick” and Grade 2 students participated in a sing song “Four hugs a day, that’s the minimum”. BJ Moore, on behalf of the parent council, thanked Charles for her continued support and efforts “working with the council to make sure we met all of our goals”. Moore called her “an amazing ambassador for our school” and noted she’s the first and last person you see when you enter or leave the school. Luke Marshall and Jared Arnold were MCs. Members of the community and past students were invited to a come and go tea in the library later in the day. Charles will finish her tenure at the school tomorrow (Friday). Asked about retirement plans, she said she’ll likely stay around home, work in the yard, enjoy nature and camping, and continue volunteering at the school. “I’m coming back for more hugs.”

Question: Should I paint the baseboards in our family room the wall colour or the trim colour? Answer: Our decorating advice is to only set off baseboards in a trim colour if there’s some compelling reason to do so. Unless your baseboards are particularly broad and handsome, paint them the wall colour so they blend into the background. Since baseboards tend to collect scuffs and scrapes, use a glossier finish than the one you use for the wall.

Eckville women delivered trailer full of donations to flood relief by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
When Tamara Lawrence and Tiphany Eliuk of Eckville learned of the devastation caused by flooding in Southern Alberta, they knew they had to do something to help. So, last Friday, they began gathering items to donate to relief efforts in Calgary, with the aim of delivering two truckloads of donations. Less than 48 hours later, they pulled into NeighbourLink in Calgary with a 25-foot trailer full of food, clothing and household items donated by people in Eckville, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House. “We were just going to go door-to-door and collect a few things, and then it ended up expanding,” said Lawrence. “I put it all over Facebook and all of a sudden I had people in Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer commenting that they wanted to donate.” With an overwhelming amount of people indicating their desire to help, Lawrence and Eliuk made the decision to set out Saturday morning to travel around the area and collect donations. Their trailer, donated by Rainy Creek Powersports in Eckville, sat outside grocery stores while they informed people of their cause. Some people donated after hearing through Facebook about the opportunity to help while others gave what they could as they left the stores.
Tiphany Eliuk and Tamara Lawrence collected donations for flood relief in Southern Alberta in front of No Frills in Sylvan Lake, Saturday. Lawrence said she was grateful to everyone who donated, and to No Frills management for allowing the pair to “bother” customers for donations. The majority of donations received came from No Frills customers, she said. SUBMITTED
“We went to No Frills (in Sylvan Lake) and I stood outside the door with a sign and quickly told everybody what we were doing,” said Lawrence. “There wasn’t one person that came out of No Frills without something. “It was phenomenal, I couldn’t believe it.”
Lawrence said the majority of people she encountered on Saturday were eager to help in some way. A young girl purchased a bottle of water and some baby food with the small amount of change she had on her, Lawrence explained. At No Frills, where the majority of donations were collected, every-
thing from toiletries to cat and dog food were received. Many blankets, towels and other personal items were also collected from donors at each of the stops made. Some people chose to give money to the cause, and by the end of Saturday, Lawrence and Eliuk had amassed over $600 in cash. They used that money to purchase more groceries and other needed items. Lawrence said that when the trailer arrived in Calgary, essential items such as water were in short supply at NeighbourLink. With the new donations, however, four pallets of water were left, and a separate room needed to be cleared for clothing. After a long day of collecting donations Saturday, delivering the trailer provided much satisfaction, said Lawrence, whose son Brady joined her for the occasion. “When we pulled up, it took about half an hour to unload,” she said. “We were only planning on taking maybe two truckloads, that was it, and it just flew off the roof. “We were very happy.” A friend of Lawrence and Eliuk’s from the Penhold area is continuing to collect donations, and has drop off areas set up around Central Alberta. For more information contact Lawrence at 403-373-1209.
Kids’ marathon concluded with a soggy walk from school to park by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Over 600 people walked the final kilometre in drizzling rain last Thursday, as École Steffie Woima School wrapped up its marathon.
About 527 people registered for the marathon and along with parents and grandparents, walked from the school to Centennial Park to conclude the program which started in early March. Students were encouraged to incorporate walking as part of
their daily physical activity. They had to complete 41 kilometres by the second week in June. Participating students, after paying a registration fee of $5 ($15 for anyone else), were given a pedometer and a log sheet. The marathon was initiated
last year by school council chair Jennifer Bahler, who heard about it while attending a school council conference. There she met people from Cardston, which has Canada’s largest kids’ marathon with about 2,000 participants. She organized sponsors to help lower the registration price for students and provide funds for t-shirts and medals. It was decided the marathon would not be a fundraiser. Organizers did not want to distract students from the goal of increasing daily activity with their families. “Lots of people said we could make lots of
money, but we didn’t want that to be our focus,” said Bahler last year. Those who participated in the marathon received t-shirts and were presented with medals by Mayor Susan Samson and other sponsors when they reached Centennial Park. Everyone else who completed the final kilometre received a participant ribbon. A bike donated by Sylvan Agencies and Cast Away Sports was won by Grade 1 student Lachlan Brown in a draw of participants. Others were drawn as winners of a variety of donated items.

It was a damp, wet morning as students from École Steffie Woima Elementary School received congratulations after they finished the final kilometre of their marathon last Thursday at Centennial Park. Over 500 people registered to take part in the marathon and with parents and grandparents, organizer Jennifer Bahler estimated over 600 people participated in the final walk.

Personal flood stories provide strong motive for preventive measures Reading stories about flood ravaged Southern Alberta we get just a glimpse of what hundreds of thousands of people are living through — the uncertainty, the pain and the grief. There have also been amazing stories of unselfish aid. We know, in the end people will persevere, pick up their lives and continue on their paths. It will take time, yet those memories will eventually dull. There’s been little loss of life — it’s just the ‘things’ that have been damaged and destroyed. We can consider ourselves blessed to live in a country where our neighbours are quick to come to our aid during emergencies. Communities rally around those who are displaced from their homes, those who have lost everything and those who have a long journey back to normalcy. Over the past five days we’ve watched massive amounts of support and aid pour into our part of the world. For those who have the ability to help, whether monetarily
or by volunteering, we applaud you for stepping up to lend assistance. As MLA Kerry Towle states, in her column below, “folks need our help”. We echo her comments about doing everything you can to support our neighbours. After people have had time to recover, there will be lots of talk about how to avoid similar disasters in our ultra-civilized country. The first shot over the bow came Tuesday when New Democrat Leader Brian Mason criticized the government’s handling of the 2006 Groeneveld report that was not released until 2012. “This week, former PC MLA George Groeneveld stressed that the strongest recommendation of his 2006 report was not to build houses or other buildings on flood plains,” said Mason’s news release. Groeneveld wrote the report after much of his riding flooded the previous year. We remember discussion of this topic — building on flood plains — in Ontario over 40
Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
years ago, yet it continues to happen. Watching television news, we’ve noted that Southern Alberta isn’t unique as far as flooding, but it is unique in protecting its residents. As neighbours rose to help, half a world away over 1,000 people have died in monsoon flooding and landslides in the northern India state of Uttarakhand. Thousands more are still stranded in high mountain passes in the temple town of Badrinath. A news report from that area stated, “hundreds of thousands of devout Hindus make a pilgrimage to Uttarakhand, visiting four of Hinduism’s holiest shrines in the state during the summer months. The tourists usually head down to the plains before the monsoon breaks in July. But this year, early rains
caught hundreds of thousands of tourists, pilgrims and local residents.” Rains washed away homes and roads, triggered landslides and cut off communications links. Sound familiar. Just weeks ago the story was Central Europe where the Elbe River had broken through several dikes in northern Germany, and the crest of the swollen Danube River had reached southern Hungary, and threatened Serbia. Only about 22 people have died in these floods, from reports we could find. A Financial Times report, commenting on the cost to insurance companies of Central Europe’s devastation, stated “the floods rank among the 10 most costliest on record worldwide”. These are just two examples of what’s taking place in the wider world. For those consummate watchers of television news they will remember other reminders of the force of Mother Nature and the devastation she wrecks. Think of
Manitoba or the Mississippi River which have been in the news in recent weeks. At Norglenwold’s annual information meeting Saturday, a representative from the Red Cross talked about emergency preparedness — a timely topic given events still unfolding at that time. He encouraged people to create their own plans and prepare for the potential of disaster. After all, as seen in Southern Alberta, many people only had seconds or, at most, a few minutes to grab what they could and evacuate. While we live in a community and in a country where people are quick to come to our aid, we must prepare ourselves as well. And following that theme, we believe there will be lots more ideas about how to mitigate future disasters. Are we prepared to consider and embrace the ideas that make sense? We certainly hope so.
Folks need our help; pitch in any way you can Everyone affected by this horrific disaster needs our help. We have no time to just sit in front of our televisions and exclaim how terrible it is — we must try to do something. So, I encourage you to think of how you can help your neighbour in need. Many people have lost their homes, their businesses and some have even lost family or friends. Anything you can do to help those in need at this time is most appreciated. Many folks got out with just the clothes on their backs and yet they have mortgages to pay, children to look after, car payments to make, businesses and equipment to recoup and on
and on. Maybe you can forgo some entertainment or treats for your own family this week and buy some water for your neighbour in need. Maybe you can make it a family effort to contribute in whatever way possible. Maybe your own business, service club or church can challenge other businesses, service clubs or churches across the province to a contest to raise the most dollars to help. Maybe you can adopt a family to take care of and help them get on their feet again. Whatever financial contribution you can make would be most appreciated. And if you are able to con-

tribute bottled water, bug repellent and/or non-perishable snacks or other food items that do not require cooking or refrigerating, feel free to drop them off at one of our constituency offices and we will be sure to get the items to the people who need them. Maybe some of you can physically help with cleanup efforts. It may take a long time for some of these areas to be restored so cleanup is immi-
nent. Whatever you can do PLEASE DO IT! Donations and volunteering Financial donations may be made to Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111 (www.redcross. ca) or Salvation Army at 1-800725-2769 (www.SalvationArmy. ca/floodrelief) or by cheque to #2 Overlea Blvd., Toronto, Ontario M4H 1P4 or donate to other existing aid organizations. Only financial donations are required at this time. Calgary drop in centres may need volunteers - mainly at meal times. To find the location of the volunteer centres, or look for other opportunities to help,
check volunteercalgary.wordpress.ca. Cleaning up To volunteer to assist with the clean-up efforts, call 1-866628-6565. This is a toll-free line hosted by Samaritan’s Purse. Whatever you do, THANK YOU! Every effort towards helping your neighbours is DEFINITELY APPRECIATED! Constituency offices will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays to July 11 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. to receive donations of bottled water, non-perishable food items and bug repellent at #18 4804 42 Avenue, Innisfail or 5006 50 Street, Sylvan Lake.

They then anonymously publish the traffic concern and the proposed traffic reaction plan in the local media. Step 3: After publishing the concern and the action plan, Municipal Enforcement then commits to enforcing the traffic plan - as announced and scheduled. In addition to issuing verbal warnings, written warnings, and violation tickets, Municipal Enforcement may distribute traffic safety pamphlets and children’s artwork. Step 4: Municipal Enforcement then concludes their CHECK-M.A.T.E. response by publishing results and statistics in the local media. Operation: CHECK-M.A.T.E. then starts over again at Step 1, with new traffic concerns. For further information about this program, please contact Sylvan Lake Municipal Enforcement, at (403) 858.7280.

Scaled back fireworks to go ahead by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
There’s good news and bad news on the Canada Day fireworks front. The pyrotechnics display in Sylvan Lake won’t be up to its usual calibre because some of the contractor’s main equipment “fell victim to flooding in a High River warehouse”, said the town’s communications officer, Joanne Gaudet, late Tuesday. “Not only was equipment affected, but so were their staff,” she said. And
Roof removed - Sylvan Lake firefighters worked to cut the roof off a Pontiac Sunfire after it rolled and landed on its side in the 3900 block on 50th Avenue about noon last Thursday. The vehicle hit a car parked beside the road before rolling. The lone female occupant suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital later in the day, said RCMP Cst. Michael Lee. No charges were laid as there were no witnesses to events leading up to the rollover. STEVE DILLS
Beautiful destination for all Albertans Dear Editor, warm weather and some beach we should become It took a long time, it cost a lot of money, it was a resort destination for all Albertans. We must be the envy of many other towns across Canada. Kudos to the mayor, council, consultants and contractors who made it happen. Thanks to young girl who helped pick up trash Dear Editor, I am writting to bring your attention to a citizen I encountered last Friday morning. I was doing my morning rounds and found a bunch of papers and garbage scattered on CP trail. I started picking it up and at that point, a young girl with a flower in a pot walked by. She looked at me and then started to help pick up the trash. I just wanted to thank her and tell her what a great start to a great citizen. Rick Bullock, Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake was not the only show affected. “Our compromise is that Big Bang Fireworks will send an experienced technician and some fireworks to Sylvan Lake as planned, however, without the original equipment, the show will be smaller in scope and technique. The company has agreed to do this for us free of charge.” Additionally the town is planning another evening “for the full-out, larger-than-life, fireworks show and we will announce a date as soon as possible”, Gaudet said by email.
Over $16,000 in drugs seized, charges laid by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Cocaine, marijuana and psilocybin were seized at a Sylvan Lake home after police executed a warrant, June 15. Red Deer’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) concluded the investigation by laying charges against Donald Lubianesky, 53, and Shawna Mucci, 43. Each are charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and one county of possession of property obtained by crime. With help from Sylvan Lake RCMP, the Red Deer unit searched the residence on 52nd Street. They seized 73 grams of cocaine, 800 grams of mari-
juana and 100 grams of psilocybin, along with drug trafficking paraphernalia and over $3,600 in cash, according to a news release from Sgt. Gerald Ouelett. The drugs have an estimated street value of over $16,000. “Our team is focused on disrupting this kind of criminal activity in Red Deer and the surrounding region,” said Ouellet. “This is another example of the results that can be achieved when police work together in communities both large and small.” Residents who have information related to organized and serious crime are encouraged to contact their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222-8477).

Grade 9 students at Mother Teresa marked milestone in education lives by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Memories of their journey so far and promises for the future were celebrated at École Mother Teresa Catholic School, last Wednesday, during the Grade 9 farewell and dance. Jeremiah Bojda,
Jason Wall and Kalan Weaver welcomed students, teachers, parents and friends. Memories of the past were presented by two students from each class - Kennedy Rolston and Sydney Scherger from 9B, Corry Grienke and Taylor Nixon from 9W, and Therese Hoven
and Hanna Wilkins from 9Z. Some remembered being together since Kindergarten, gaining a few new students and losing more than a few along the way. Others talked about the “crazy qualities” of their classmates. Mikayla Cumming
and Kyla Franco paid tribute to parents noting there’s no stronger bond between parents and their children. In her theme and farewell, Elora Rider talked about the feeling of awakening, not just academically. “Everyone seemed to blend into one large group, all had a balance that created fun, fun, fun.” Noting this accomplishment “is a small milestone in our lives,” said encouraged fellow students to “always know where you came from, you’re always welcomed back.” She concluded with the words of Mother Teresa. “We ourselves feel what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” A slide show followed. It was created by Matthew Ventura and Dakota Masson with Mme. Boyd. Each of the students was presented with a gift, a tradition which teachers put a lot of thought into each year. They were presented with a tile stamped with different virtues, a pen and pencil for survival in high school and a sucker or candy to signify always remember their childhood. Students who were given gifts included: 9B - Shaina Dockrill, Tyne-Marie Ganje,

More than 6,500 Canadian Scouting youth and volunteers will converge at Camp Woods, Sylvan Lake, for the ultimate Scouting experience — Scouts Canada 2013 Canadian Scout Jamboree (CJ’13). The largest gathering of Scouts in Canada, CJ’13 will provide youth aged 11 to 14, leaders and volunteers with a week of new experiences, friendships and adventures, July 6-13. “CJ’13 gives youth the opportunity to meet new friends, challenge themselves to try new things and explore the outdoors all while experiencing personal development and growth that only a jamboree experience can bring,” said Kaylee Galipeau, National Youth Commissioner and Chair of the National Youth Network, Scouts Canada. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that brings together thousands of Scouts from across Canada.” During the week, jamboree participants will be involved in a number of activities including: camping, whitewater rafting, canoeing, snorkeling, hiking, zip lining, rappelling, archery, orienteering, raft building and much more. Some participants will also explore
some of Alberta’s attractions such as Calgary Stampede and West Edmonton Mall. Scouts Canada is also working with local authorities to investigate potential ways for jamboree participants to give support to Albertans in the wake of vast flooding that is taking place across the province. “Scouts are known for helping others,” said Andrew Price, Chief Commissioner and Chair of the Board of Governors for Scouts Canada. “We will have thousands of youth and adults coming to Alberta in just under two weeks, and we want to lend a hand where we can during our visit to this great province.” The CJ’13 theme is based on Four Worlds - West World, Atlantis, The Bone Yard and Sylvan Crusades — where Scouts take part in prehistoric-themed adventures including mountain explorations, castle raids and dives for sunken treasure. The weeklong event will feature live performances by Canadian musical comedy trio The Arrogant Worms and young bluegrass band The Abrams Brothers.

Being mindful of looking after what nature has provided locally and on a global level and living her vision that women can be inspirational leaders has earned a Sylvan Lake environmentalist a Women of Excellence award. Beverly Anderson, deputy mayor of the Summer Village of Norglenwold, received the environment award at Red Deer & District Community Foundation’s sixth annual Women of Excellence awards gala. As well as being deputy mayor, Anderson is chairman of Sylvan Lake Art Society, Sylvan Lake Management Committee and Norglenwold Municipal Planning Commission. She is also executive director of the Association of Summer Villages of Alberta. Anderson’s impressive environmental track record began when she graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies. After working for environmental consulting firms and conservation authorities, she was employed with the provincial government as a planner for Kananaskis Country. She later moved to Rocky Mountain House where she worked as tourism director for the town and county. After teaching recreation planning at Red Deer College she went to work for Alberta Environment and completed her Masters in project management, later becoming executive director of Red Deer River Watershed Planning and Advisory Council. Anderson said she is thrilled to be recognized for the environmental work she has done for the last 37 years of her life. She added it may be difficult to make an environmental impact globally, but everyone can do something to improve the environment at a community level.

Beverly Anderson Leading initiatives like the removal of ice fishing huts off of Sylvan Lake, the cumulative effects management system for the lake and recycling for the summer village are some of the ways Anderson does her part to pay it forward on local issues.” In her acceptance speech, Anderson said road trips taken across Canada and the United States with her family when she was a child instilled in her a desire to travel. “Having now been to 39 countries, I have learned to appreciate what we have — our beautiful country of Canada and our province of Alberta and have passed on that desire to see the world as a whole ecosystem, to my two amazing daughters, Kelly and Julie, already women of excellence in their own right.” Anderson acknowledged Sylvan Lake Mayor Susan Samson and Deb Carlson for their continual support and encouragement. “Like everyone else, my life is a roller coaster of events; some highs, some lows. The lows are important as they make you appreciate the highs.” About 350 people attended the awards ceremony held June 12 at the Sheraton Centre in Red Deer.

A young entrepreneur whose potential to be a woman of excellence was nurtured and encouraged in her younger years by her mom and her grandma, was one of the top 10 ladies recognized at an awards gala in Red Deer, recently. Katherina Cummins from Sylvan Lake received the entrepreneurship award at Red Deer & District Community Foundation’s sixth annual Women of Excellence Awards Gala, attended by about 350 people June 12 at the Sheraton Centre. Cummins credits her mother, Wendy Sauvegeau and her late grandma Mavis Oswald with giving her motivation and encouragement to be the best she could be in life. She is also grateful to the love of her life, her husband Lane, and her grandpa, George Brown, for their ongoing love and support. Cummins said she was humbled and honoured to receive the award. “I really felt inspired to see how much the other ladies (who were recognized) contributed,” she said. “It inspired me to want to do more.” Cummins, a dark haired, friendly mother-of-three, already has an impressive track record of helping others; a trait which she believes is crucial to success. “If you are going to have great success, you have to share. It’s better for everyone. I was raised by a single mom and I know what it’s like to go without.” Cummins opened her first medi-spa in Red Deer in 2004. Within a year she had expanded the business. In 2009, she opened the first Aesthetics Laser School in Alberta in Red Deer, the Medi Aesthetics Institute of Canada. She has

since opened a second school in Sherwood Park. Cummins always strives for academic excellence, both for herself, her schools and her students. Throughout the tapestry of her successful career, Cummins continues to weave strong threads of compassion and caring. She donates supplies to outreach, youth and homeless shelters, offers a scholarship program for women getting into the workforce, is involved in the Red Deer community garden project and her spa donates coupons for free services to the women’s shelter. Cummins and her husband have three girls, Hope, eight, Chase, six and Carington, four. The family enjoy living in Sylvan Lake and the girls, no doubt, have the wonderful role models of their mom and their grandma to help prepare them for the challenges and rewards life will, no doubt, bring their way.
Remember students with contribution to time capsule by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
People in Sylvan Lake who know current Grade 9 students at École H. J. Cody High School are being asked to help them with an exciting time capsule project. Teacher Kelsey Wilson is organizing the project for the second year in a row. The idea is for students to write to each other and collect letters from friends and
family to put into the capsule that will be opened on their graduation day in June 2016. “This is a project that the staff hopes will become a tradition at H. J. Cody, and anyone in the community who knows a Grade 9 student is encouraged to drop off letters or notes at the school’s main office,” Wilson said. “Submission will be accepted until tomorrow (June 28). Those writing could be current employers, family friends, or others who know the young people.

Millions in redevelopment recognized by rededication of Centennial Park by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Calling improvements to Centennial Park and Lakeshore Drive “drop dead gorgeous”, Mayor Susan Samson said the $22 million redevelopment project was a joint initiative between federal, provincial and municipal governments. “We were able to finance it without property tax money,” she said, indicating the federal government supported the project with $1.9 million from the federal gas tax program and $1.8 million from Building Canada Fund. Other money came from provincial grants. Planning for redevelopment began in 2006 with plans drawn and
residents consulted. “A lot of local people and area contractors had the same vision as us and helped accomplish it,” she said in thanking those involved. “We have a place which encourages people to get out of their vehicles and walk, built a people-gathering area, a sense of place.” Plaques and signs featuring Sylvan Lake’s history will be placed on towers along Lakeshore Drive in the next few months. David Dorward, MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar, represented the Government of Alberta. “What a wonderful way to mark Sylvan Lake’s 100 year milestone, creating a destination you will share with visitors,” he said. “The Alberta government is so proud to support the transformation of this park. We congratulate the
Mayor Susan Samson, David Dorward, MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar (representing the provincial government) and Kerry Towle, MLA for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake, unveiled of a plaque marking rededication of Centennial Park during ceremonies June 12. STEVE DILLS
Town of Sylvan Lake for the commitment to creating this beautiful space.” Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Kerry Towle also spoke of the town’s vision
and hard work to accomplish a place which will enhance the beautiful community. Her remarks were interrupted by a train blowing its whistle
as it proceeded through town. Historian Michael Dawe, MC for the event, said “to have a first class summer resort you have to have public access”. He indicated the province recognized this when it bought the land for the provincial park in 1929 and extended it in 1936. Centennial Park, he said, is a “crowning glory — all this green space, moving traffic away from the lake shore”. A plaque marking the rededication was unveiled by Samson, Dorward and Towle, alongside the plaque marking improvements to Centennial Park in 1967.
Recognized
- Christian Leadership awards were presented to one student in each class at École Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School June 10 to recognize those students who “gave a little bit extra, really let Christ work in them to be leaders”, said presenter Judith McIntyre. The students received a certificate and book and will have their names engraved on a plaque that hangs in the school. In the back row are Wyatt Boutin, Regan Goacher and Annalisa Trieber, in the centre row are Madison Cunningham, Ashley Karcha, Isabella Pritchard and Mya Sealy and in the front row are Prestin Chu, Carleigh Hunt, Jayden McLean, Erin Prier and Mercedes Reinhart. Missing was Theodore Persson. STEVE DILLS
Residents asked to complete survey by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
With the goal of identifying the potential for new businesses in Sylvan Lake’s downtown, the town is conducting a survey titled “What’s Your Pleasure?” The online survey is targeted at residents of Sylvan Lake and the surrounding summer villages and rural area. Besides the online survey, a group of people will be conducting door-todoor promotions in some neighbourhoods. In May a survey in downtown business districts showed an overall vacancy rate of 10.6 per cent, however in the 50th/ Centennial Street District the vacancy rate was 41 per cent. “We need to understand the shopping habits of local residents includ-
ing goods and services they currently utilize in Red Deer,” said Kurz. “Our goal is to identify new businesses that locals would support and shop at in the down-
town districts of Sylvan Lake.” To take the five minute online survey visit www. sylvanlake.ca and click on the ‘What’s Happening’ category.

Historic - Projected to be a booming community 110 years ago, Stockholm declined after Alberta Central Railway bypassed it in 1910-11. Now there’s a plaque located beside Burnt Lake Community Centre, reminding people of the community. It was officially unveiled last Thursday. Participating were Joe-Anne Matejka, President of the Burnt Lake Community Centre, historian Michael Dawe, Red Deer County Councillor George Gehrke, Kay Johanson who spearheaded the sign project, and Kevin Ziola who built the frame for the sign and accompanying townsite lot plan. In 1903 Red Deer Land Company created the 300 lot townsite which eventually had a cheese factory, store, post office, telephone toll station, school, stopping house, blacksmith shop, three churches and a number of houses. About 40 people attended the celebration. STEVE DILLS

Father’s Day Run raised over $1,200 for Rotary by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
More than 80 people braved cold winds and overcast skies for the fourth annual Sylvan Lake Father’s Day
Walk/Run June 16, and raised over $1,200 for Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake in the process. Money raised from the event will go toward a number of Rotarysupported initiatives, including the lighthouse project. Sylvan Lake Rotarians also recently delivered wheel chairs to needy individuals in Mexico, and carry out work on water projects in Guatemala. Run director Scott McDermott said only five of the 79 people pre-registered for the Father’s Day event were absent. Twelve people showed up and registered on the day. “We had about 60 per cent of our registrations in the last three days before the event,” he said, adding that numbers in the past two years have grown significantly.
Participants walked, biked, ran and rollerbladed over distances of two, five or 10 kilometres along Lakeshore Drive. “It’s definitely a family event,” said McDermott. “There’s no timing chips, and most people were just out to have a nice walk for Father’s Day.” McDermott said the event will take place again next year. Until then, however, he is encouraging people to register for the Terry Fox Run in Sylvan Lake later this year. That run will take place Sept. 15, and follow a format similar to that of the Father’s Day Run. A variety of distances between one and 10 kilometres will be available. More information is available at www.terryfox.org.

Freeze or Fry a great meet for Nautical swimmers by Kim Matthews and Pam Moore Special to Sylvan Lake News
Coach Sharon and a few Sylvan Lake Nautical swimmers participated in Red Deer at the 61st Annual Freeze or Fry swim meet the weekend of June 7-9. This outdoor meet is always a weather challenge but usually lots of fun for the kids. This year was one of the warmest it’s been for a few years now, but we sure did get a mixed bag of weather. Friday started okay but turned to lightening and pouring rain in the evening, delaying some of the events until Saturday and Sunday. Saturday during the day was amazing weather that held fairly descent through to the finals on Sunday. For male swimmers we had Blake Carson (9) who swam well in his one event, the 50m freestyle. Michael Carson (12) also only swam in one race, the 800m swim which is 16 lengths of the 50m pool. He placed fourth overall in his age group. Isaac Bahler (9) was once again very keen on swimming everything he was entered in. He placed eighth
in 50m backstroke and ninth in 100m backstroke, which is a challenge. The clouds were moving sideways across the sky making you drift side-to-side in your lane. For a few of our female swimmers this was their first long course meet (50m pool). Molly Cocks (9) had an amazing meet making finals in 50m backstroke and an alternate for finals in 100m freestyle. She got one best time, placed fifth in 50m backstroke and ninth in 200m freestyle. Sarah DeGannes (10) swam Friday in 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, looking really strong and showing great confidence in both her swims. Justice Fancie (11) has been training really hard and got four personal best times for her efforts. Clair Weberg (9) had a great meet and how exciting to have placed in two events for finals. She swam the 50m breaststroke placing 11th and finished ninth in 50m freestyle. Kacey Joseph (13) was there as a great inspiration to younger swimmers and had a great weekend. She swam five personal best times and had a great meet in a really competitive age group. Jordan Smith (12) swam her way to four personal best times and got a tenth place
finish for 200m breaststroke. She really enjoyed the outdoor pool and how everyone is on deck including parents and grandparents.
Eden Price (9) had an incredible swim meet getting three personal best times but more exciting was making finals in six out of seven swims. Eden placed second in 50m backstroke and 200m freestyle, third in 100m freestyle and fourth in the remaining four races. What a good weekend for all the swimmers and a great way to end the season for some of them.

Last week’s article about Cody athletes was cut off mid-sentence due to a graphic design problem. With our apologies, here are the remaining paragraphs of the story. Chatwood also mentioned Cody athletes who had individual accomplishments outside the school. Tyler Steenbergen was selected in the first round of the WHL bantam draft by Swift Current Broncos. Chase Thudium and Jordan Steenbergen were key members of the Red Deer Optimist Midget AAA hockey team that won the Telus Cup National Championship. TJ Sloboda was selected to the U18 Team Alberta football team that will compete at nationals in New Brunswick and Alex Donaghy was selected to the U18 Alberta volleyball team that will compete at Nationals in Winnipeg.
