Snapshot of the RDEK flooding situation Submitted While the flooding situation around the region has lessened, there are still a number of areas of immediate concern. Below is a snapshot, provided by the Regional District of East Kootenay, of the situation as of June 26. • Wasa – A State of Local Emergency has been declared for Wasa. The Lake is expected to rise another 10”-12” over the next 24 hours (Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday). A Forestry Unit crew worked throughout the day today sandbagging. A total of 13,500 sandbags have been delivered to the community and 12 pumps are on site. Kootenay Pond (the slough) dropped 22cm in the past 24 hours and is draining into the Kootenay River. Cameron Pond flapgate is open and draining. • Hosmer – Clean up kits from the Red Cross have been picked up by many members of the community. The RDEK Board of Directors has waived tipping fees for all flood-related loads of garbage and bins were set up in Hosmer to help those affected by flooding in their homes have access for disposal during clean up. • Fernie – a State of Local Emergency remains in effect. All City parks remain closed as City staff continue assessments to determine the full extent of the damage. The parks are expected to remain closed for at least the balance of the week. • West Fernie – West Fernie Dike is holding stable and drainage has returned to normal. The RDEK Board of Directors has waived tipping fees for all flood-related loads of garbage and bins were set up in West Fernie to help those affected by flooding in their homes have access for disposal during clean up. • Cokato – Information has been delivered to the homes on Thompson Road regarding well testing / drinking water safety. • Elkford – The engineer is on site to complete the dike assessments and determine the funding required for top priority items that need to be repaired. The District of Elkford is providing residents affected by flooding with information on Disaster

Financial Assistance and the proper steps to take if your well/septic has been impacted. Damage assessments for flooded residences will be conducted Thursday. • Sparwood –City staff are assessing trails and parks for damage. Efforts are also underway to replace a water line that was damaged in the flooding. • Dutch Creek – The Declaration of a State of Local Emergency remains in place. An evacuation alert for the HooDoos Resort Campground and neighbouring residences is still in effect. Heavy equipment is nearing completion on the rip rap reinforcement along the banks of Dutch Creek. Water Stewardship BC was on site inspecting the Creek again today and levels on the creek remained unchanged from yesterday. • Fairmont Hot Springs – both Fairmont Creek and Cold Spring Creek remain within their channels. Work continues on culvert maintenance near the Riverside Golf maintenance shed due to ongoing sedimentation. Highways Update Highway 93/95 remains single lane alternating traffic at Wasa due to erosion on the shoulders following flooding over the weekend. Work continues at the bridge at Skookumchuck and its hoped that the Highway will be reopened to two-lane traffic as early as Thursday. Disaster Financial Assistance Approved by Province The RDEK made application to Emergency Management BC (EMBC) for Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) for “Overland Flooding”. The Province has approved the Regional District of East Kootenay for DFA for all rural areas and municipalities with the RDEK. This means full-time residents can fill out claim forms and submit them for a portion of the cleanup costs related to the flooding that are not covered by insurance. The DFA program is provincial (not RDEK) and is only available to full-time residents (not seasonal). Applications for Disaster Financial Assistance are on EMBC’s web site at http://embc.gov. bc.ca/em/dfa_claims/ dfa.html.

After verifying that all the different pieces are adjusted properly, the last phase involves the finishing steps, including sanding, varnishing, or waxing. Changes in the furnishing sector over the last few years have prompted cabinetmakers to specialize in producing furniture that can fit into existing décors. History of the day

PHOTO SUBMITTED

It doesn’t matter what country you may have come from, Canada Day is a celebration for everyone in the country. Every year, on the first day of July, Canada celebrates its birthday with many festivities across the country. This occasion was first commemorated in 1868, at which time Canadians were invited to mark the first anniversary of the Confederation. This event became an official holiday on July 1, 1879, when Dominion Day was officially proclaimed. This proclamation was initially received with little enthusiasm, as many Canadians were still very much

attached to the British Empire. However, by the fiftieth anniversary of Confederation, in 1917, Canadians had be co me rather more delighted with the occasion, and the first Dominion Day celebrations were held on Parliament Hill. Ten years later, the nation celebrated the diamond jubilee of the Confederation. In 1980, Canadian patriotism was proclaimed loud and clear as the song O Canada, written a century earlier, was adopted as the national anthem. Two years later, the Constitution Act was passed and Canada became a wholly independent nation. This was the ideal moment to rename the annual celebration of Confederation, which is now known as Canada Day. Since then the event has become a great Canadian tradition, and every year, in any kind of weather, hundreds of thousands of Canadians come together to celebrate their history and their rich cultural and natural heritage. Dressed in red and white, they congregate together at parks, homes, and city centres to observe the day with pride and joy.

3 Facts you need to Know About...

LNG Development in BC... 1. BC’s international advantages include: shorter shipping than US and southern BC ports; deep water ports in NW; abundant gas reserves in NE BC; BC gas is cooler coming out of the ground, a huge advantage in the liquefaction process; stable political jurisdiction. 2. Eight “super major” corporate consortiums are advancing or exploring LNG facilities in NW BC today; one gas pipeline is approved; two others are in application stage; each plant will cost $4-5 billion; each pipeline will cost $5 billion. 3. LNG carrier ships haul 162 cubic metres of natural gas, enough gas to light up 70,000 homes for a year. These ships do not use diesel fuel. They are powered by the clean natural gas they carry.

Gregarious Gardener

,

by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

What's in a Canadian Garden? All across our great nation, gardeners are transforming plots of land into lush and productive gardens. But what makes a Canadian garden? While requirements vary from region to region, there are some things all Canadian gardeners are looking for: our plants have to be hardy and critter-resistant and if they celebrate our Canadian spirit, the better. Many gardeners talk about their plants being “coldhardy” and mean that they can withstand our harsh frosts and long winters. Hardiness is a complex relationship of factors, but we can leave the details to plant researchers. To guide us in the selection of appropriate plants for our growing area, Canada is divided into nine hardiness zones. from 0 being the harshest to 8 being the mildest. While these are good guidelines, there can be microclimates in individual yards, depending on the layout of the land. In general, the East Kootenay region is considered to be anywhere between a Zone 3 and a Zone 4, but gardeners have successfully grown Zone 5 plants in more protected corners of their yards and gardens. Growing seasons can also be extended by starting seeds indoors first, protecting plants from early and late frosts or building cold frames. Most Canadian gardeners have to defend their creations against their four-legged neighbours. While many animals, from the smallest mouse to the largest bear, can be found feasting on our gardens, across the country deer are the most frequent visitors. There are plants that are more deer-resistant than others. The phrase ‘deer-resistant’ attached to garden plants means “the chances are reduced”. It does not guarantee that the hooved nibblers will leave your plants alone for good. A starving deer is going to eat whatever is available - whether it is labeled deer-resistant or not - and a curious deer cannot resist a bite here or there. There are, however, some plants that do not seem to suit the deer palate as much. They include Cranesbill Geraniums and Echinacea. Rudbeckia is another plant that will encourage the deer to keep walking. Roses can be on the top as well as close to the bottom of the list of deer favourites, but with a little protection, they can brighten up any yard - especially if they are singing Canada’s praise. The Canadian Explorer series of roses was born in the 1960s at the Central Experimental Farm at Ottawa. Dr. Felicitas Svejda initiated the breeding program for these hardy shrub roses and named them after important explorers of the Great White North, hoping they would prove as tough and versatile as their namesakes had been. The red-flowering Champlain Rose and the pink-flowering William Baffin Rose and John Davis Rose are just some examples. Another series of tough, but oh-so-beautiful roses are the Canadian Artist roses. They are developed to adapt to growing conditions in gardens from Victoria, British Columbia to St. John’s, Newfoundland and anywhere in between. In colours of red, pink, yellow and a blend of smouldering yellows and reds, these roses commemorate four great Canadian artists, Emily Carr, Felix LeClerc, Bill Reid and Thomas Thomson. A masterpiece for every garden! For years, gardeners in the rest of the country have been left to marvel in envy at the abundance of blackberries in gardens - and along roadsides - at the West Coast. Now there is a plant for other Northern gardeners that will quench the thirst for these blackpurple gems. The Navaho Blackberry is Zone 4 hardy, thorn-less and a very heavy producer. The icing on the cake: reports so far are good that the deer are staying away from this blackberry as well. A look at Canadian gardens has to include maple trees. The ultimate symbol for Canada, maples are always a favourite. They impress with their showiness in the fall, but also with their speed of growth. From the Autumn Blaze Maple to its columnar cousins, the Red Rocket Maple as well as Prairie Splendor Maple or Norway Maple, there is a little piece of Canadiana for every yard. Till next time... Happy Canada Day! Submitted by Kerstin

She also started a volunteer group to visit and work at the hospital with chemo patients. Irene was devoted to her volunteer work. Another passion of Irene’s was the love of her garden and flowers, giving her great pleasure. She loved the outdoors spending many years of camping, fishing, water skiing, golfing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and curling. Irene loved to travel and spent many winters in Arizona upon retirement. Irene was a devoted wife and mother. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Nancy (Wilf) Richter of Calgary, son Douglas (predeceased June 23, 2008), daughter-in-law Jane Dunwoody of Calgary, son John (Sue-Ann) Dunwoody of Melbourne, Australia, six grandchildren, Tanys (Luigi) Betuzzi of Calgary, Mark Richter of Calgary, Erica and Jennifer Dunwoody of Calgary, Taylor and Kiera Dunwoody of Melbourne, Australia, her sister Neata McAllister of Murrieta, California, as well as many nieces and nephews through out Canada. Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.
