Imagine walking past a construction site in downtown Victoria, pulling out your smartphone or iPad and immediately seeing what that same space looked like last year, a decade or even 100 years ago. Now imagine panning your smartphone towards the sky and seeing exactly what that building will look like when it’s complete. Thanks to VicMap, that app and hundreds of others could soon be a reality. The City of Victoria’s new interactive, multi-layered online map takes massive caches of municipal data and puts them in one place, creating a one-stop shop for information that previously required a trip to City Hall. From sewage lines to rezoning development applications to parks that allow off-leash dogs, VicMap is intended to simplify data for residents and businesses alike. “There’s very basic targeted information like property tax (details) or garbage pick-up dates, but what this application does is it allows people to combine information to do some pretty neat things,” said Steve Myhill-Jones, CEO of Latitude Geographics, a Victoriabased IT company that built the program used by the city. Zoning data can be combined with census and demographic information, for example, to determine the best location for a new grocery store, or the city could easily add the locations of voting stations during the next municipal election, Myhill-Jones said. CEO Karl Swannie and his team at CloverPoint specialize in turning geospatial data into easy-to-use visualized applications (for an impressive example, see Islands Trust’s MapIT application).

Yogis welcomed in Willows Park Stymied in past by bureaucracy, summer yoga classes set to go Natalie North News staff
After the Oak Bay parks and recreation commission shut him down in 2012, the organizer of free summer yoga sessions in Willows Park is ready to take a deep breath in and try it again. “We have a permit and it’s all legit,” said Pete Rose, a yoga instructor for VI Fitness and Synergy Wellness Centre. Last year Rose organized and promoted a weekly free summer yoga series in the park, but without having applied for a permit to use the park, saw just one session come to fruition before the series halted.
Following the disappointment, Rose filed an application for use of the park in 2013. The commission okayed the event, Rose purchased insurance and yoga will now take place Tuesday nights from 6 to 7 p.m. in Willows Park. The permit was granted on a trial basis for one year. “Things do work if you go through the bureaucracy. It just takes a lot of planning and foresight.” The gentle Hatha class is open to all ages and abilities and will run no matter the weather. “Even if it’s raining, we can do fast yoga under the trees.” Last year about 30 peo-

A mother and daughter from Victoria have been charged in connection with a slew of credit card frauds across the Capital Region. Vancouver Island RCMP say the women, arrested June 12, are suspected of conducting hundreds of illegal transactions across Vancouver Island totalling over $90,000 between January 2011 and March 2012. Many of the frauds were never reported to police, but extensive followup and liaison was done with with banks, merchants and other agencies, said Insp. John Ibbotson with the RCMP’s serious and organized crime operations and financial integrity department. “Credit cards were altered and unauthorized credit card data was used to purchase high-end electronics, furniture, merchandise and gift cards,” he said. “These arrests and charges represent a significant success and disruption of ongoing financial crimes.” Christine Mauro, 46, and Karen Mauro, 63, face 27 combined charges of fraud under $5,000 and use of credit card data. They are part of a prolific crime group, police say. The women appeared in Victoria court June 13 and are under house arrest pending a trial date. Most of the transactions occurred within the City of Victoria and the South Island, Ibbotson said. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Esquimalt residents to have say on sewage plant land rezoning Don Descoteau
at Archie Browning Sports Centre. Providing input on a decision pivotal to the progress of the Capital Region’s largest-ever infrastructure project – one mandated by the province and reinforced by new federal sewage treatment legislation – is clearly the most far-reaching opportunity ever for Esquimalt residents. On Monday, Esquimalt council voted 4-2 to send to public hearing a package of three bylaws related to the CRD’s application to rezone
News staff
With the Capital Regional District hoping to break ground soon on a sewage treatment plant at McLoughlin Point, Esquimalt residents are preparing to give council their thoughts on the required rezoning of the land. Proposed bylaws relating to the treatment plant site will be discussed by residents at an 11thhour public hearing set for July 8

the McLoughlin Point land. “There was a lot of negative sentiment at the (council) table,” Mayor Barb Desjardins said, referring to arguments against advancing the application. “But people felt it was so important to hear from the public that they wanted to move it forward.” The proposed bylaws lay out specific ground rules for land use, including design guidelines similar to those one might expect for a large commercial development.
Desjardins likes the potential in one bylaw, which recommends mixed uses for the site. It would allow for such features as a historical interpretation centre, a public dock and public art, while suggesting the design and construction of the plant should mitigate environmental and human health impacts and not detract from the scenic entrance to Victoria harbour. “That’s what that bylaw talks about, is ‘can you do something better for the Victoria region as an
amenity?’” Desjardins said. While residents and business owners have been fired up over potential plans for the CRD to use its property on Viewfield Road for a biosolids plant, the mayor stressed the public hearing will not address that issue. The public hearing starts at 7 p.m. If more time is needed, it will continue Tuesday at 7 p.m. An extended version of this story can be found at vicnews.com. ddescoteau@vicnews.com

Swannie applauded the City of Victoria for getting much of its data online in one place – no small feat in a municipal environment. “Building the application is almost the easier part, because you’ve got to get years of data together,” said James Fernandes, CloverPoint’s chief technology officer. “Everything we do is all predicated on good data,” Swannie said. “If we get good data from our clients, then we can build amazing things.” He holds up his iPad and pans it left and right, displaying a navigable 3-D model of the Victoria International Airport’s newest wing, which hasn’t yet been built. The interface combines digital architectural drawings to create the feel of being in the space. “We did a project like Google Street View but on the coast of Alaska, just in case there’s an oil spill, they’re going to know where to land crews,” he said. Myhill-Jones praised the City of Victoria for developing a version of VicMap that works on smartphones and tablets, something many municipalities are slow to embrace. “You can actually bring up property and zoning information on the go. It’s the first step, but there’s tremendous potential and I think we’ll see the city develop it,” he said. To explore VicMap, visit victoria.ca/map. dpalmer@vicnews.com

IN BRIEF
Pedestrian struck by bus
A Victoria woman suffered minor scrapes to her elbow and was shaken up Tuesday morning after being knocked down in a crosswalk by a B.C. Transit bus at Blanshard and Humboldt streets. Kathryn Jessup and a friend were crossing Blanshard on a walk signal when they noticed a bus turning left off Humboldt to head north at about 8:30 a.m. “I put my hand out and touched the bike rack on the front,” she said. The contact put her off balance and sent her to the ground, Jessup said. The bus driver stopped immediately in the middle of the intersection once he realized what happened. The driver, who was taken off shift for the day, will be ticketed for failing to yield. B.C. Transit will investigate the incident, along with ICBC. ddescoteau@ vicnews.com
Van crashed, reported stolen
A North Saanich teen is facing impaired driving and public mischief charges after allegedly crashing his van then reporting it stolen. Around 2:30 a.m. June 19, VicPD responded to a 911 call from a 17-yearold man at Clover Point who said he had just been robbed of his wallet and van at knifepoint. The van was located near Hollywood Crescent and St. Charles Street with extensive damage. Police believe the teen wanted to avoid responsibility and an impaired driving charge.

New federal guidelines for medicinal users punish patients, says longtime advocate Daniel Palmer News staff
Victoria’s medicinal marijuana dispensary is pulling back the curtain on its operations to argue strict new federal rules won’t meet the needs of patients with cancer, AIDS and chronic pain problems. The Cannabis Buyers Club of Canada chose to publish its operations manual on the same day Health Canada released its revised medicinal marijuana regulations last week. The new regulations, which take effect April 1, 2014, will outlaw homegrown marijuana which will in turn drive up costs and restrict access to already-isolated patients, said Ted Smith, the buyers club founder. “We’ve been doing this for 17 years, and a lot of people have questions about how we do things. So we wanted to be as transparent and as helpful as possible,” Smith said. “We’re a non-profit society providing a service to sick people.” The manual includes a list of documents describing how the plant should be grown, inspected and made into a usable product, as well as policies on how to sign-up new members, conduct security and clean and handle marijuana. “Part of what we want to show is there are reasonable means of distributing this medicine that are more responsible than the one the federal government has outlined,” Smith said. Under the new rules, medicinal users will only be able to purchase dried marijuana from approved commercial producers. By out-

lawing homegrown sources, many patients will soon need to rely on mail-order delivery as well, Smith said. “Whether you’re smoking it or eating it or applying it topically, there are so many ways you can use cannabis,” he said. “It’s unfair to assume someone who has just been diagnosed with cancer can learn how to use this medicine from a piece of paper or website and deal with everything
else going on at the same time.” The Victoria-based club provides marijuana to medicinal users to alleviate pain and discomfort. Users can smoke, vapourize, consume baked goods or use topical oils and creams for limited medical conditions that must be approved by a doctor. Smith and his colleagues won a lengthy legal battle in 2012 that allows them to produce cookies and other alternative marijuana prod-
ucts in the dispensary. The B.C. court of appeal is set to review that case Oct. 17, and Smith hopes it eventually reaches the Supreme Court of Canada. “As long as the government doesn’t allow for extracts and people can’t buy cookies or massage oils off a commercial producer, there’s a role for dispensaries. Until that gaping hole is dealt with, we have a necessary role to play.” dpalmer@vicnews.com
Victoria cancels Saturday garbage drop-off Daniel Palmer News staff
The City of Victoria is putting an end to resident garbage disposal at its public works yard on Saturdays. Effective July 6, only yard and garden waste will be accepted to improve wait times for residents at 417 Garbally Rd. “Ninety per cent of the residents that come to the yard on Saturdays
are dropping off yard and garden waste, and only 10 per cent drop off garbage,” said Katie Josephson, City of Victoria communications director. Staff need to operate a separate garbage transfer station and accept payments at the yard, and that slows down operations, Josephson said. The City will continue to sell tickets for excess garbage at $4 each,

The Saanich resident, a personal trainer and occasional fitness model who not long ago finished off her bachelor of commerce degree at the University of Victoria, was upbeat and smiling for the cameras, having run in from Langford that morning. Asked what she wanted to do now that she had accomplished an objective set almost two years ago, her answer was surprising: “I’m going to drive out to Elk and Beaver Lake and go for a run.” Run for Their Lives is a fundraiser for three organizations – the B.C. SPCA, Recreation Integration Victoria and the Mustard Seed. Hempler still must crunch the numbers on how much money was brought in, but the campaign is open for donations at canadahelp.org until June 30. “This is a tremendous personal accomplishment,” said Doug Nutting, executive director
Don Denton/News staff
of Recreation Integration Victoria. “We’re an organization that facilitates an active lifestyle for people with disabilities and Yana is a great example of what you can do when you put your mind to it.” Hempler’s support team – kind of like Terry Fox’s brother – was Ian Simpson, who drove the motorhome and shouted encouragement at various points along the 495-kilometre route. Hempler’s landlord for the past five years, Simpson said he and his wife, Michelle, are kind of like “surrogate parents” to the Russian-born runner and proud she achieved her latest goal. “She never lost her motivation,” he said. “And she got stronger as the run went on. I
could see a different body posture from beginning to end.” Hempler was joined for the Malahat run in the early hours of Monday morning, and on the final leg of the journey Tuesday, by training partner Kara Delaney, 25, who competed in a Tough Mudder race last Saturday. The women pounded up the hill from Mill Bay together, with only one close call when a truck passed them close. “We had to hop into the ditch,” Delaney said. Reflecting on what Hempler tackled and achieved, Delaney said she was an inspiration. “She’s changed my mind about distance running. She’s made me want to get out there and run a marathon.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

OUR VIEW
Venting session comes too late Esquimalt council faces a tough decision in the next few weeks, that of rezoning lands targeted for a sewage treatment plant. Ahead of that decision, residents of the small municipality will gather in great numbers at a hockey arena more often used to host lacrosse games in early summer than citizen forums. A public hearing will give council members a chance to hear what their constituents really think, among other things, about a) putting the main treatment plant at McLoughlin Point, b) what kinds of uses are appropriate for the land and c) whether rejecting the Capital Regional District’s rezoning application will send the project back to the drawing board or simply force the hand of God (the province) to order rezoning. It’s not as if Esquimalt’s elected officials don’t already know how their residents feel. If they didn’t feel dumped on enough by the CRD’s choice of McLoughlin Point for the main plant, the prospect of a biosolids centre on Viewfield Road got their blood boiling – even if that issue is not up for discussion at the public hearing. Esquimalt Residents’ Association co-chair Nick Kovacs says the CRD has done a poor job convincing people they have any say in the matter. As such, he says, people look at sewage treatment like the way the HST was forced on the province by the B.C. Liberal government. The CRD has already spent in excess of $20 million in the planning stages for the provincially mandated project and appointed an independent sewage commission to oversee project design and construction, not to mention pencilled in early July for a start on building at McLoughlin Point. It has little appetite to look at other options if Esquimalt says no. By mistakenly assuming the township would fall in step with the project timeline, the CRD has painted itself into a corner and could be forced to ask the province to do the dirty work of forcing Esquimalt to rezone. Such a scenario would see the voices of Esquimalt people, the most affected by this project, effectively ignored, as many of them feel they largely have been all along. What do you think? “At a time when we need affordable housing,” he asks, “why are these buildings being allowed to rot and why do officials seem so reluctant to even talk about it?” Several municipalities in the Capital Region have created bylaws to address the problem of derelict buildings, but experience has shown these to be largely unenforceable. In Victoria, the Northern Junk and Janion buildings sat vacant for years before the city was able to force the owner to sell the downtown properties. The Residential Tenancy Act doesn’t provide much help either, and tenants’ advocates in government are few and far between, prompting Godfrey to wonder, “Where do residents turn when it comes to housing that is being allowed to rot down?” In recent weeks, most of the region has been consumed with deciding the fate of its dung and the rest seems content to view housing creation as a race to build the greatest number of luxury homes. While vacancy rates continue to plateau far below the Canadian average and more and more residents struggle to find a home, I’m left wondering how long it will take before we pull our heads out of our sewage and look up. Simon Natrass’s column can be found in Friday’s paper and online at vicnews.com.

LETTERS CRD biosolids survey misleading: resident After completing a survey for the Capital Regional District on the preferred location of the biosolids energy centre, I feel I am being played by the CRD and the public relations firm who developed the materials. The CRD misrepresents Viewfield Road as an industrial area with a ‘few’ residences nearby. The picture of Viewfield they show is a close-up, so most of what one sees is the proposed property and the sub-station behind it, not the surrounding residential neighbourhood. In reality, the property is very close to hundreds of homes, three large public schools, a church, nonindustrial businesses etc. Alternately, the CRD has a big graphic of a sewage plant in Kelowna surrounded by schools and homes – which were built later. What they fail to mention is that that plant sits on more than three times the land and services one third of the population. The CRD website doesn’t mention its own report, which estimates property values within 500 metres of the biosolids centre could decrease by up to 25 per cent. The CRD also has no comparative analysis of health impacts or a section to indicate health of nearby residents and students as a ranking criteria.
The CRD has no analysis or ranking criteria for impact to air quality, even though its own environmental assessment for a biosolids centre at Hartland landfill indicated air quality impact to be ‘significant.’ There is also no criteria for safety, even though biosolids centres can catch fire, leak and explode. Alberta has laws requiring residences to be no closer than 300m. At Viewfield, the closest residence is 25 m away; at Hartland it’s 1.2 km. The CRD misrepresented the Vic West/Esquimalt community surrounding this site and a lot of the criteria was based on the cons for Hartland – many negatives for Viewfield were not presented for consideration. The survey is structured in such a way that even if Hartland is your preferred choice for the biosolids centre, the ranking criteria for the actual selection will result in Viewfield being the optimal choice. HOT SALSA
ust six months after Logan Volkers made his first salsa dancing steps he is training to dance in the World Latin Cup. Volkers took up salsa dancing through Victoria’s Salsa Caliente in January and his dance partner, Olga Mosca, started in September. Last week Mosca and Volkers took first place in the Northwest Amateur Salsa Championship qualifier in Portland, and will now train for the Miami-hosted World Latin Cup semifinals, in December. “They’re doing ridiculously well, but we work them pretty hard, too,” said Christina Morrison, who’s instructed salsa dancers for 15 years, mostly in Victoria. Both attended classes taught by Morrison at Café Casablanca and showed promise. They were soon made partners and trained under Morrison. “They put in the time to dance with all kinds of people in lots of classes, four to five times a week, and that’s how you improve,” Morrison said. The results have been trophy yielding, winning the B.C. and Northwest competitions. Volkers is ready to admit it’s been a quick learning curve. There’s no way he imagined he’d have come this far in six months.
“Guess I’m a fast learner. I previously did a little dancing all over the place, but I think it’s just in my blood,” he joked. “My parents met on the dance floor, country dancing in Alberta.” In all seriousness, it took three years
for a friend to draw the reluctant Volkers to Café Casablanca. He moved to Victoria to do his undergrad and masters in engineering at UVic and now works in a startup software company. With his nights free, he finally obliged. “My first night I did horribly but better than I should have and (Morrison) decided to let me understudy for some of the touring teams. I worked my butt off and when the competition came up, I partnered with (Mosca) to put a routine together,” he said.
approved Mosca had a different path with some previous dance experience. Born in Singapore to Italian parents, Mosca was raised in Rome, Italy, where she figure skated until she moved to Oak Bay as a 14 year old. There, she continued to figure skate and also danced tap for a year. “It’s incredibly exciting to have started in September and already done this well. It’s great to have the people around me who support me so much.”

He’s a picker, he’s a grinner, he’s a lover and he’s a sinner – and yes, Steve Miller is coming to Victoria with his singular sound. Miller has come a long way from The Joker, his U.S. platinum selling album, in the last 40 years. The band formed in 1968, but didn’t find fame until the release of The Joker in late 1973, which was followed up by band’s two most successful studio albums, the 1976 release Fly Like an Eagle and 1977’s Book of Dreams. The announcement of the 2013 tour by the Steve Miller Band follows four of the most pro-

Local theatre stages a comeback Artistic directors offer a variety of productions to stay afloat by Kyle Wells kwells@goldstreamgazette.com
W
hen provincial gaming grants for cultural programs were slashed in the middle of an economic downturn, many local theatre groups realized how tenuous their financial
stability is. “That loss created a period of uncertainty and certainly created some deficit situations that some people had a hard time getting out of,” says Ivan Habel, general manager of the belfry Theatre. even though the belfry regained most of that funding, and is doing well, the episode left the company cautious. Habel says the company now thinks twice before developing new works, focusing primarily on staging plays with an assured audience. The scale of plays is also carefully scrutinized each season, with an eye to keeping costs down. Denise brown, theatre manager of langham Court Theatre, says the key to surviving, and thriving, has been finding new audiences while pleasing the regulars. To do this, her theatre stages both crowd-pleasing favourites and more edgy choices to appeal to different audiences. “I think it’s important to do both,” brown says. “In terms of marketing and seeing the sales patterns, I think langham has understood the balance of what their patrons want.” The first two shows of langham’s current season, 84 Charing Cross Road and lady Windermere’s Fan, did well. The established titles and crowd-pleasing comedies

were often sold out. Its third show, That Face, an edgier psychological drama from 2007, written by a 19-year-old playwright, did not sell as well, but brought in a different crowd. “If we don’t adapt, we don’t grow,” brown says. “That’s with any business.” Theatre Inconnu is another charitable, not-for-profit society that relies on funding and a core audience. Clayton Jevne, artistic director and manager, says things are going well for the company, which has a mandate to put on alternative productions. “We try to market ourselves as being a company that does shows that will challenge the audience and that reach out to a certain part of the population,” Jevne says. “I guess we’re targeting a specific kind of person.” Despite staying afloat, Jevne says it would be nice to see more people come out to shows. A 30-year industry vet, Jevne says Victoria’s theatre scene is consistent and that there is enough community interest to keep a wide variety of theatre alive and well. This variety is a sign of a strong industry, said Heather lindsay, general manager for Intrepid Theatre. It means there is still a wide audience for theatre in Victoria, despite a slow economy, and a strong community of artists and theatre companies there to meet the demand. “There just seems to be a lot of great project work happening,” lindsay says. “It’s just really wonderful when there always seems to be a theatre or dance or arts event that’s happening.”

Here he goes again. Ryder Hesjedal tops the list of Garmin-Sharp’s nine riders for the Tour de France, which were named Wednesday from the team’s hotel on the French island of Corsica. The Tour opens with three stages on Corsica, beginning Saturday (June 29) from the picturesque city of Porto Vecchio, before moving to the mainland, where it will wrap the 3,404-kilometres in Paris on July 21. Because it’s the 100th anniversary of the race, its route
will run completely in France, though it has a history of looping stages through surrounding countries. Hesjedal is once again the team’s go-to man and will be their ace to compete for the yellow jersey. The Belmont secondary grad and former mountain biking Olympian is riding the success of his win at the 2012 Giro d’Italia and sixth place finish at the 2010 Tour de France. At 32, there is still time left for Hesjedal to win another Grand Tour. Hesjedal is one of five Garmin-Sharp riders returning from Garmin-Cervelo’s Tour de France team title in 2011. Joining Hesjedal are American veterans Christian Vande Velde and Tom Danielson, up-and-coming Lithuanian Ramunas Navardaus-
kas and British time trial expert David Millar, who were all part of the 2011 team. “We will protect our best general classification options and see how the race shakes out,” said Jonathan Vaughters, Garmin-Sharp CEO. Questions do surround Hesjedal, as he’s withdrawn from three straight Grand Tours, having crashed out of the 2012 TdF and 2013 Tour de Suisse, and fallen ill during the 2013 Giro d’Italia. All indications are that he’s fully recovered from the heavy blow to the neck and head he suffered in Switzerland earlier this month. The Tour will be broadcast live each morning on Sportsnet and replayed later in the day. sports@vicnews.com

Nurse training gets a boost TD Bank donation supports training for health-care professionals at Royal Jubilee Hospital Don Descoteau News staff
A new $125,000 commitment by TD Bank Group will help train hospital nurses in the fast-moving field of patient care. The donation from the TD Grants in Medical Excellence program was pledged last week through the Victoria Hospitals Foundation’s Building Care Together campaign. It includes $25,000 per year for five years to support training that will touch roughly 1,200 nurses at the Royal Jubilee Hospital’s Patient Care Centre. On an ongoing basis, nurses are updated in such areas as criti-
cal care techniques and infection prevention and control. For example, the protocol for monitoring for potential infection spread changed when the Patient Care Centre opened with singlepatient rooms, a switch from having multiple patients in a room. Other necessary training involves learning new methods for keeping track of patient medications and becoming familiar with the culturally different care needs of First Nations patients. The donation will help pay for nurses to attend conferences and workshops, then do inservice training with hospital colleagues.
OPEN HOUSE
Sunday 2-4pm - 50 Howe Street
“The Patient Care Centre is a leading-edge hospital that attracts exceptional medical professionals,” Leslee Farrell, co-chair of the Building Care Together campaign, said in a release. “TD Grants in Medical Excellence will benefit many of these care providers and educators. Even more importantly, it will directly benefit patients in our hospitals through improved care.” The campaign has now received pledges totalling $12.94 mil-
lion, more than halfway toward its goal of raising $25 million for staff training and medical equipment for the state-of-the-art Patient Care Centre. ddescoteau@vicnews.com

A Mini race car built by Green’s Automotive.
His name was Everett Roland Green, but everyone called him Blackie – a nickname given at a young age for coming home grimy from welding and fabricating in a ALYN EDWARDS Vancouver shipyard. CLASSIC He loved cars RIDES modified for the street or the drag strip and began helping friends build hot rods out of a back alley garage in the early 1950s. He was soon building cars to race at local drag strips and race tracks. In 1953, he opened a shop called Master Welders. It was the place to go for increasing numbers of young men who wanted to make a statement with their customized cars. Blackie designed many components and applications that today’s hot rodders take for granted. He built dropped front axles and reversed spindles to lower cars. He fabricated custom dual exhaust systems, split exhaust manifolds and headers. He shortened and balanced drive shafts and a host of other work. He did V8 engine swaps for a $100 flat fee and custom body work. To exhibit his genius with a welding torch, he cut out a four -inch section right through his wife’s 1949 Meteor coupe to lower the entire body,
producing a radically customized car powered by a Cadillac engine. He also built a supermodified stock car that became a championship racer driven by top race car driver Mel Keen. When floor shifts became the rage, Blackie designed, built and sold 100 Tornado Speed Shifters. He designed a louver press and started stamping louvers in hot rod hoods and other body panels. In the late 1950s, Blackie renamed his company Green’s Automotive, moved through several locations in Vancouver and began specializing in widening wheel rims. Blackie would do anything automotive, from building custom roll cages for race cars to converting vehicles to right hand drive for export to Australia. He taught his young son Bob Bob and Elaine Green, who now run Green’s Wheel Repairs, display a tribute to pioneer hot how to weld and fabricate. Soon rodder Blackie Green. Bob was working in the shop after school and on the weekends. In the early 1960s, a Fuller Brush company system together complete with steam representative pitched Blackie on cleaning equipment to do whitewall installing Vancouver’s first automated tires and wheels. Ford has participated in a special test of a high-tech early warning “brake light” that can warn drivers following behind even if they are around a bend or behind other traffic. The technology is one of 20 potential future systems Ford tested as part of Safe Intelligent Mobility – Testfield Germany (sim), a four-year joint industry research project. Ford tests high-tech ‘brake light’ that communicates with car behind to illuminate a dashboard light in cars following behind. The study found the technology could enable drivers to brake earlier and potentially mitigate or avoid a collision. The sim field tests involved 500 test drivers in 120 vehicles – including 20 Ford S-MAX models. Testers logged more than 41,000 hours and almost a million miles on public roads and an enclosed test track in Germany. Ford used specially-equipped Ford S-MAX models to help test the potential of car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communication; also testing Obstacle Warning system, which alerts to the presence, position and type of potentially hazardous objects in the road, and Traffic Sign Assistant, that keeps in contact with traffic management centres for up-to-date information.

V12 Vantage S: Blast-off for fastest Vantage yet Metroland Media WheelsTalk.com
Aston Martin’s most extreme sports car, the new V12 Vantage S, is the brand’s fastest accelerating production car to date – with the exception of the limited-edition, and sold-out, One-77 hypercar. Taking just 3.7 seconds to sprint from 0-60 mph (3.9 seconds 0-100 km/h) the sports car underlines its position as not only the brand’s fastest accelerating production car, but also the most potent Vantage in Aston Martin’s glittering 100-year history. Equipped with the new 573 PS AM28 6.0-litre V12 engine, featuring latest generation engine management, the car is capable of reaching 205 mph making it, also, the fastest sports car to wear the iconic Aston Martin wings – One-77 excepted. Three-stage adaptive damping means the
driver can more precisely tailor the car’s dynamic character and exploit its clear performance potential. ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ modes provide a broad swathe of dynamic capability, while the system also governs the level of power steering assistance offered. Working alongside the extended adaptive damping system is a ‘Sport’ mode, controlled via a button on the centre console, which alters throttle response, gearshift speed and timing, and exhaust note to, once again, tune the character of the car to the driver’s requirements. The new ZF-Servotronic power assisted steering boasts a quicker 15:1 ratio, in line with the car’s sporting pedigree, linked to the adaptive damping button. It offers two-mode steering assistance designed to best match the ‘Sport’ or ‘Normal’ settings generated by the Adaptive Damping System.
With a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h 3.9 seconds), the new Aston Martin V12 vantage S has a starting price of US $184,995.
Porsche driving for the very young
Porsche Driver’s Selection Go-Kart is a pedal car for kids up to five feet tall.
Porsche Driver’s Selection - Go-Kart with Pedal Drive Metroland Media WheelsTalk.com
The newest item from the Porsche Driver’s Selection is a Go-Kart which puts children from the age of five behind the wheel of a sporty Porsche machine. The Go-Kart, which is about five feet long, is a new highlight in the children’s program of the Porsche Lifestyle Collection and impresses
because of its lightness: thanks to its unique construction, based on Porsche Intelligence Performance, the children’s pedal-powered vehicle weighs a mere 55 pounds. In addition to its exclusive design, another attractive feature of the Porsche Driver’s Selection Go-Kart is its use of high-quality drive components typically used for constructing bicycles. The composite wheel rims, with simulated centre locks, are fitted with
low-profile, inflatable tires with inner tubes. Other equipment includes a sport seat, plus both a back-pedal brake and a handbrake which ensure optimal deceleration. With its tubular steel frame, the Porsche Driver’s Selection Go-Kart is suitable for children weighing up to 110 pounds with a height of up to five feet. Priced at US $900, the Go-Kart and other products from the Porsche Driver’s Selection are available
exclusively from participating authorized Porsche dealers and on the internet at www.porsche.com/sp. Not all the products are available in every market.

West Shore honours Canada Day at Fort Rodd
Sidney Days Continued from B9 July 1 dawns bright with the Sidney Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at the Mary Winspear Centre beginning at 9 a.m. – allowing plenty of time to stake out your favourite spot to enjoy the Canada Day Parade.
Canada Day’s biggest birthday cake is always served at the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites, where the West Shore comes together to celebrate the country’s birthday every July 1. Live music is planned throughout the day, not to mention kid-friendly activities, entertainment, food and of course, cake! Even better, admission and cake are free in honour of Canada’s special day.
While at the national historic sites, don’t miss the chance to explore. Dating from 1890, Fort Rodd Hill is a coast artillery fort preserving coast artillery gun
The parade – the highlight of the weekend – begins at 11 a.m., starting at Beacon Avenue at Resthaven Drive. Find great viewing locations along Beacon with wheelchair viewing at Fifth Street.

Did you know? While July 1 has been a day to celebrate Canada as far back as 1868, when then Gov. Gen. Monck called for a celebration of the anniversary of the formation of Canada, it later became Dominion Day. “Canada Day” was first celebrated in 1982. Sidney’s Pet Centre & Aquatics, 9769 Fifth St., or online at www.sidneydays.ca The festivities come to a splashing conclusion with the Slegg Lumber Build a Quick Boat Contest, where teams build a sea-worthy boat with just $100 in building supplies and a time limit...no power tools allowed! Catch the fun at Beacon Park in front of the Pier Hotel with building from 12 to 4 p.m. and the race starting at 4:45 p.m. For more information about any of the Sidney Days events, visit www.sidneydays.ca

Honda expands Accord lineup with 2014 Hybrid Hybrid features class-leading fuel economy ratings and exclusive styling METROLAND MEDIA WHEELSTALK.COM
The first official photos of the Canadian version of the all-new 2014 Accord Hybrid set to hit dealerships nationwide this October are now available on Hondanews.ca The Accord Hybrid features the same sophisticated styling found on the Accord Sedan, plus upscale detailing with unique hybrid badging and blue-accented grille and light lenses, LED lighting, a unique wheel design and a decklid spoiler. The Accord Hybrid joins an award-winning family, including the Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe. The 2014 Accord Hybrid will use Honda’s new two-motor hybrid powertrain along with two-motor Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi
Mode Drive powertrain. This will enable the Accord Hybrid to move through three different driving modes, EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive to optimize efficiency and fuel economy. In ‘EV Drive’, the Accord Hybrid uses the lithium-ion battery to run in electric-only mode at lower speeds and in medium to high speed cruising, “Engine Drive” sends the engine power directly to the front wheels. In “Hybrid Drive’ the powerful 124-kilowatt (kW) electric motor and the all-new 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC Atkinson cycle fourcylinder engine blend together for powerful acceleration while allowing for efficient driving in stop and go traffic situations. The Accord Hybrid is anticipated to deliver fuel economy1 of 4.0/4.2/4.1 (City/Hwy/ Combined) L/100Km.
This is one of the first photos of the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid that goes on sale in Canada in the fall.
Gwyneth Paltrow attends launch of new Audi Super Avant METROLAND MEDIA WHEELSTALK.COM
Oscar-winning actor Gwyneth Paltrow came to Piccadilly in London recently to attend the launch of the latest Audi – the RS 6 Avant – a station wagon with supercar performance. Powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine, it is the most potent Audi currently made, with 550 hp, a sprint time to 100 km/h of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph, which can be raised to 189 mph upon request. Paltrow has many links with Audi through the
movies – as Pepper Potts she drove models from the prestige German brand in all three of the Iron Man action series – and America’s leading lady of the moment also drives an Audi both in London and in Los Angeles. At Audi City in London, Paltrow marked the car’s launch by signing its ‘Lunar Silver’ leather interior and immortalizing it as an unrepeatable one-off. It will be auctioned at the White Tie & Tiara Ball at Elton John and David Furnish’s Windsor home on June 27, with every penny from the sale of the car going to support the work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Safety is one of our core values, and it is something we design into every vehicle we create. In fact, if it’s not safe enough for us, we wouldn’t dream of selling it to you. That’s why we’re the only manufacturer to have received IIHS Top Safety Picks on all models for the past four years (2010–2013), and why the 2013 Legacy and Outback (on vehicles built after August 2012) and the 2014 Forester have also received 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ ratings.▲ So you can have confidence in your vehicle when you’re on the road, and when you’re off it.

Ferrari president opens the new Museo Ferrari
Ferrari president, Luca di Montezemolo, is shown during the officiall opening of the new Museo Ferrari in Maranello.
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo recently officially inaugurated the new Museo Ferrari in Maranello. The building, extended by more than a thousand square metres and completely renovated in terms of its fittings and layout, hosts the permanent exhibition of the most significant single-seaters in the Scuderia’s history, as well as temporary exhibitions of interest not only to fans but also to the wider public. The latest of these is called “From Cinecittà to Hollywood, all Ferraris in the cinema,” which apart from featuring clips of the most well known films that have featured Prancing Horse cars also boasts a display of some very significant cars. Included are the 275 GTB4 which was owned by Steve McQueen, the Mondial T Cabrio driven by
Al Pacino in The Scent of a Woman and the spectacular one-off from an American collector, inspired by the 330 LM and used by Federico Fellini in Spirits of the Dead. “The Museum represents a vital way of showing the general public the history and culture of a company that is strongly focused on the future,” Montezemolo said. “I am particularly pleased to see that so many visitors come from abroad. This year we will reach the figure of 300,000 visitors which, for a museum which is not located in a big city, is a great success. “I am very pleased with the renovation of this building and also how the new Maranello Ferrari Store is doing, which will serve to set the standard in terms of the quality of the experience and the products on sale, for all our shops around the world.”
